Anybody else think that the black guy is the little boys father? !!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!
The mysterious man is probably not DL. According to IMDB, those are two different characters and actors, although they are both bald black men. I was hoping that would mean that we would see DL still alive, but based on my previous post it may just be in flashbacks.
!!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!
Revolver 10-17-06, 02:15 PM BTW, does anybody know whether the actor who plays Hiro is a "native" American or not? If not, I guess they could have dubbed him.
Oka was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Los Angeles at age six, where he currently resides. He is fluent in Japanese and proficient in Spanish. His hobbies include Kendo (Japanese sword fighting), playing video games, watching and writing romantic comedies, playing the piano, and singing. His birthday is December 27.
ckenisell 10-17-06, 02:18 PM Anybody curious about everybody's white eyes?
tokerblue 10-17-06, 02:19 PM Hiro spoke like a native english speaker with not a trace of an accent. No way.
- Maybe Hiro can manipulate time, space... and sound! ;)
I have a couple of Japanese friends who have been in this country speaking english for, literally, 20 years and they still speak with a heavy accent.
BTW, does anybody know whether the actor who plays Hiro is a "native" American or not? If not, I guess they could have dubbed him.
You should look up his resume in IMDB - he's done a lot of CG work. According to Wikipedia, he's an American actor. What do your friends think of Hiro's Japanese?

John Mason 10-17-06, 02:30 PM Just watched and enjoyed a DVR of this week's episode. Seems like a surprisingly well-crafted series--if you can suspend reason for most of the comic book stuff. But the cinematography, directing, editing, acting, etc. seem outstanding (for 24p film via 1080/60i these days). Getting WNBC-DT, AFAIK, via a fiber feed to my cable system head end, so fortunately haven't noticed any breakups, etc. that seems to be plaguing NBC national distribution, coupled with too much local multicasting. -- John

They actually moved a year or so ago, but we still stay in touch with the occasional card, call, etc. I will ask them next opportunity - but first I better ask them if they watch the show! :)
Since he's American, I would suspect that it's similar to Daniel Dae Kim (Jin on LOST) speaking Korean - passible (with plenty of coaching) but lacking in the fine inflection and natural cadence that all languages possess.

Considering he moved to the US at the age of six, he would have had plenty of time two learn two languages. I'm sure growing up with his parents here he would still speak Japanese at home and english at school. Three in his case as he apparently also speaks Spanish. I know plenty of people that grow up in dual language households that speak both fluently considering their parents were the natives of whatever coutry that ended up moving here.

So do I. But speaking fluently is one thing. Speaking so perfectly that you get all the inflections and cadences right without a trace of accent, now that's a far more difficult task. Especially with english, which has sometimes been called the most difficult language on earth for non-natives to learn.

I wonder if there is some significance to the two missing horizontal lines on the symbol, if you zoom way way in and play with the contrast and brightness, it looks like the two lines that we normally see are actually there, but kind of stubbed off on the sword.
Yeah, I know Dan, I know. The funny thing to me was that after the episode, that's the thing that struck me as "no way". :p I have a couple of Japanese friends who have been in this country speaking english for, literally, 20 years and they still speak with a heavy accent. Always will, according to them. Hiro spoke like a native english speaker with not a trace of an accent. No way. ;)

I'm not sure it's unprecedented, though it is certainly difficult and rare. I've heard of young Indians who learn to speak English with an American accent from American television. I haven't seen it myself though. Also, I've seen Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard and German actress Franka Potente play Americans and speak with perfect American accents.

Revolver 10-17-06, 03:00 PM That sounds like a description of a "Dating Game" contestant. :p
:D I know. It came from the NBC.com bios of the actors.
What would be brilliant (OK, maybe not brilliant but at least cool) would be to have an episode of Las vegas, in a scene that's treated as an afterthought, where they see Hiro and Ando cleaning house and send their goons to toss them out.
And have Claire be a cheerleader from the Dillon Panthers of "Friday Night Liights". Odessa TX, the town she's in is the home of the Permian Panthers who are the basis for the film and the TV show.
Speaking of Odessa TX, as far as I know, Odessa is hardly large enough to have an airport to allow the "Father" to be jetting around like he does(mother mentions he'll be late for his plane). Not a big deal, but I get the sense that "dad" is getting around by other means than airplanes.
IndigoBlu 10-17-06, 03:02 PM If you watch the behind the scenes video at nbc.com you can hear the actor who plays Hiro speak perfect English with an American accent.

ftboomer 10-17-06, 03:05 PM This week was my first time seeing the show. Is that symbol on the sword the same as the one on Niki's back during the politician seduction scene?
Yes, sort of. The symbol, or some veriation of it, appears with all those who have "powers". Although we may not have seen all of them yet.
- Maybe Hiro can manipulate time, space... and sound! ;)
Perfectly reasonable assumption as sound requires time and space to even be sound.
If you watch the behind the scenes video at nbc.com you can hear the actor who plays Hiro speak perfect English with an American accent.
As previously noted, he came here at age 6, so he speaks English with native fluency. His parents required him to go to Saturday school, which was a supplemental education in Japanese language and culture. Bummer for him as a kid, but great as he's stayed in touch with his culture of origin. Not to mention it helped him nab a primo role on a hit TV show. :-)

Yes, it can be done; my point was it's really difficult, as you also suggest. However, it appears to be pretty darn easy for Brits & Aussie actors to adopt a "neutral" American accent judging by how many of them appear in our Hollywood productions on the large screen and small. Jamie Bamber (BSG), Hugh Laurie (House) and Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck) come immediately to mind. If you didn't know, you'd never know.

drsimnal 10-17-06, 05:47 PM They would still perform the Autopsy to see if there was something else wrong that caused the death. Like a heart attack led her to fall in the water and the current of the river was able to move her so fast that she was impaled but a branch of a fallen tree or any other reason. Things like that warrant a complete autopsy. The thing that they did wrong was cut her open first. Normally they would have removed the object first. But NBC wanted a sensational moment.
Ever if they knew who she was I don't "think" the father could stop the autopsy because they needed to determine if was murder or an accident. Any police out there or Coroners can give us feed back on this?
I'm not a cop or coroner, but I am a physician in a specialty with a high pediatric death rate. The family may request that a coroner not perform an autopsy, but it lies with the discretion of the coroner to decide yes/no. For children, it is often the familial wishes that carry the day, in my experience. If there is high suspicion of foul play surrounding the death by others (ie police, physicians), then you can often talk them into doing a post-mortem. In this case, I think it would be unlikely that the father could block it, given the circumstances.

Yeah, it's easy enough for people from native English speaking countries to switch accents . I'm not sure how much easier it would be for a Swedish or German native speaker to do it than a Japanese one. I'd venture to guess that Skarsgard and Potente learned English at a young age, as do many people in India. I'd also guess that it would be much, much more difficult, if not impossible, for someone to start learning English as an adult then adopt a native English speaking accent. But I'm no dialect expert.
I remember having this discussion regarding the first season of '24' when a character spoke with an American accent, but when his identity was discovered, he switched to a thick eastern European accent. I thought that was pretty unrealistic because if a person could adopt a native English speaking accent, their natural accent would not be so thick.
But hey, it's TV...

Have you ever heard Hugh Laurie from House speak in his native language?
He sounds very "American" in that show, and if the story is true, even fooled the casting director.
With proper voice training, you'd be amazed what can be done (I spent 8 months in broadcasting school where a part of the time was spent on practicing regional dialects).
martin3 10-17-06, 06:40 PM The most unbelievable bit (and that's saying a lot for this show) had to be Hiro appearing at the end in the subway car speaking perfect, non-accented english. No way could he learn it that fast, that well, not in a year, not in 10, and for most people, not in a lifetime. Unless he has another super-power: super language skills!
Kind of reminded me of that scene in LOST where Jin is speaking perfect english to Hurley in a dream. I suspect this will end up being something similar.
The dude can control time. He could go back/forward and spend as long as he wants learning something then travel back to the exact moment he left while retaining everything he learned.

Well a good punch to the nose seems to do the trick pretty good.
Right now, hiro needs about 3-4 seconds of scrunching up his face really hard to make time stop, so he's pretty vulnerable during that time period.
I imagine he'll get better at it as time goes by.

Hugh Laurie is British... his native language is English. It is considerably easier for people from English speaking countries to mimic accents of people from other English speaking countries, so often Americans/Canadian/British/Australian actors will have little problem playing a character from any of these nations.
It does seem to be considerably more difficult for people who grew up speaking a language other than English however. I agree it's not impossible, just more diffiult.

OMG with the accents already everyone ... The show is great, I think a few other things happened ;)
Savageone79 10-17-06, 08:32 PM Ok so 2 things!
1st does anyone think that the lead blonde acress looks exactly like Diana Krall the Jazz musician which by some weird coincidence (or on purpose) they played a Diana Krall Song during her sex scene at the end
2nd I don't think that the flying boy was copying Hiro's powers. My assumption is that his future self has much more power over his gift and can specifically freeze or unfreeze people in time. ALso Hiro does seem pretty powerful but I wonder if they will limit his ability in some way. We know that time and space could be related like matter and energy and maybe he can't displace one without the other like when he transported to New York and ended up 5 weeks in the future. Maybe he can't move space without time or vice versa so far all his attempts (other than transporting to new york) have been small and the after effects not very noticable.
HDTVFanAtic 10-17-06, 08:51 PM If you think Ali Larder looks like Diana Krall, you'll be watching too much TNT Stretch-o-vision.
Savageone79 10-17-06, 08:54 PM Diana Krall & Ali Larter

The best American accent I've ever heard by an Englishman has to be by Mark Addy, who plays Bill Miller on CBS' "Still Standing". I didn't even know he was British until I saw him in "The Time Machine" when it was on cable.

Roger Lococco 10-18-06, 10:52 AM the actor that plays Hiro's friend, James Kyson Lee,is a Korean American,so he should probably be congratulated for being able to speak Japanese in a semi convincing way, lol.
Have to disagree with Mark Addy having a great American accent, most Brit actors have a pretty poor ear for American accents, good cases in point are Patrick Stewart and Jane Seymour,it always comes out as very superficial and non regional, and just "flat".Christian Bale's American accent is pretty poor as well.
CPanther95 10-18-06, 10:56 AM Considering you're from Queens, I'd wager that you'd find most Americans have poor American accents. ;)
Roger Lococco 10-18-06, 11:16 AM most Americans have a "regionality" to their accents,no matter how slight, but when Brits attempt it,they sound like they're from nowhere in particular.

dmbatch 10-18-06, 11:24 AM I just looked up Masi Oka (Hiro) on IMDB. He was a digital artist for ILM and worked on most of their major productions from 1998 to 2006. He has also written a movie called Chester's Big Night.
petergaryr 10-18-06, 11:35 AM most Americans have a "regionality" to their accents,no matter how slight, but when Brits attempt it,they sound like they're from nowhere in particular.
When I mentioned a few posts back about broadcasting school, we were taught to go for a "mid-western" dialect.
Anyway, back to the show....we don't know how far into the future Hiro went, or how long he stayed. He could have had plenty of time to perfect his English.
We are talking about a show that would have us believe people can be endowed with extraordinary powers, virtually overnight. For Hiro, "speaking in tongues" could very well be idiomatic American.
I think it is hilarious that we can accept people flying, regenerating after an autopsy has started, stopping time and the like but speaking American without an accent is difficult to accept. This is why I love these forums! :D
Considering you're from Queens, I'd wager that you'd find most Americans have poor American accents. ;)Yo! Panther! I'm from Hollis, Queens myself!!! I resent that!!!!:p
It's funny how regional American accents can be, for example; After living in the Boston area for the past 16yrs or so, in NYC they're not quite sure of my regional accent (really, very few have the Back Bay/Cheers accent you hear on TV), but around here they can identify me as a native New Yorker because I annunciate my "R"s. I also pronnounce words with "off" as "awf", as in "cawffie", and "LawngIsland"(one word). Yes, just like TV. Hehehe.:D
I suppose certain global accents are similar are the same no matter where you go.
CPanther95 10-18-06, 11:50 AM Moving to Boston, I'd be more focused on preserving your Queens accent than losing it. :D

What? He stops time so he can speak perfect english instead of visiting women's locker rooms? I don't think so.
Anyway, sounds like Masi speaks great Japanese & English. If the actor can do it, then so can the character.
nuttyinnyc 10-18-06, 12:47 PM Really? That's one of the things I DON'T like about this forum. To much off topic stuff. Can't we just stick to the show? Who cares if the dude has an accent or not?
Well, that is the problem all this accent talk isn't totally off topic. It is a little off topic when we are comparing other people not even on the show. If he knows english that well, then something changed between episode 1 and 3. So we need to know when he learned and how? If he knew english, Why was he calling the artist and only speaking japanese? He made it seem like he was constantly calling him.
barth2k 10-18-06, 12:48 PM The best American accent I've ever heard by an Englishman has to be by Mark Addy, who plays Bill Miller on CBS' "Still Standing". I didn't even know he was British until I saw him in "The Time Machine" when it was on cable.
but once you know he's british and listen carefully, you can hear he's a little off. meaning his accent is unlike any known american accent.
i think the same goes for hugh laurie (house)
CPanther95 10-18-06, 12:49 PM He was definitely from more than 5 weeks in the future, so they either successfully stopped the bomb, or he made sure he wasn't in NYC this time around.
Did anyone else notice the incredibly bad makeup job on the politician brother when he was in the hotel room with Nikki? Oh my gosh! That is why HD is so tough on actors and their makeup artists. He looked like he was in drag. Sure I wouldn't have noticed it in SD
barth2k 10-18-06, 12:54 PM Is regeneration by itself really a superpower? It's definitely "super", but what value is there to being able to die repeatedly or not having to buy Band-Aids?
they can throw her at Scary Black Guy to slow him down.

That was bad - IIRC he had some dark orange areas on his face.
spike jones 10-18-06, 01:02 PM Anyone have shots of Nikki so we can check her makeup..
cheneyp 10-18-06, 01:34 PM So, what's up with Nathan's wife? He mentions her at his "gala" and the fact that she'd be there if she could (right before he "outs" his brother for the "suicide" attempt). He also talks about being married when he's with Niki. Has there been any backstory on her (or did I miss something in the first 4 eps)?

Ummmm? You can rescue people from burning train wrecks.
Or maybe, just maybe. You could defuse a nuclear bomb without having to worry about radiation poisoning.
He was definitely from more than 5 weeks in the future, so they either successfully stopped the bomb, or he made sure he wasn't in NYC this time around.
I wonder if in his timeframe she died but they stopped the bomb anyway. But now it turns out they need her for an entirely different crisis.
Ummmm? You can rescue people from burning train wrecks.

I can see both sides here. As it stands right now, she definitely has her uses. But she wasn't even strong enough to stop that QB moron from having his way with her. So you can't just toss her into the fray at this point. Over time with the right personal combat training she could be a force to be reckoned with.

According to Titan tv they are in HD,
the episodes are
8pm Don't look back
9pm One giant leap
10pm Collision
Chevron07 10-18-06, 03:30 PM "Go deep, and clean him out" is what was said.
So this is most likely interpreted as, get all of the information out of him and then wipe out his memory? That's how I took it at least.
BTW...Ninja-Hiro at the end sealed this show as a must watch for me. I kept thinking that the show may just be filler until judgement day. Now it looks like they have bigger plans that go much further out than New York getting nuked. It also doesn't hurt that it appears my favorite quirky character becomes a bad ass.

I read somewhere (maybe here?) that this marathon was going to be for a different new show, but since Heroes is doing so well, they decided to do the additional promotion for it.
talbain 10-18-06, 03:33 PM OMG with the accents already everyone ... The show is great, I think a few other things happened ;)

yeah man i don't think they look alike at all. not even a little bit...
Is regeneration by itself really a superpower? It's definitely "super", but what value is there to being able to die repeatedly or not having to buy Band-Aids?See, that's the thing. We don't know if any given power alone has any value, but combined certain powers might have alot of value.
Take negative man. He can apparently turn people's powers off or create "feedback" of some sort. Now the congressman's bro alone against him probably wouldn't do much (or nothing at all), but combine him with other heroes he could probably create a "feedback loop" of some sort, and allow the others' powers to still work.
archiguy 10-18-06, 03:50 PM Is regeneration by itself really a superpower? It's definitely "super", but what value is there to being able to die repeatedly or not having to buy Band-Aids?

(inside joke for Carolina Panther fans.... ;) )
Garrett Adams 10-18-06, 04:10 PM Speaking of a masked English accent, I recall a few years back Dave Letterman was really surprised when his guest Gary Oldham revealed that he was English. Surprised me also.

It was suppose to be a "Kidnapped" Marathon but that show was already banished to Saturday night. So NBC is trying to expose more viewers to this show, Sunday is a good night also since that is usually a football night so anyone who forgot that there is no game might stay and watch the 3 hrs then watch on mon.
flint350 10-18-06, 06:20 PM Lordy, this thread grows faster than toe-nail fungus! I like this show and was trying to keep up, but this is taking all day to read anymore. :D  I need speed reading superpowers. (now that's a lame superpower)

If they really wanted to do it right, they should show eps 1-3 on Sunday, and episode 4 at 8:00 on Monday, and follow that up with the new episode(5) at 9:00, if you got them hooked on Sunday, you would have them completely up to speed on Monday. Mini-Series style.

This is a big time superpower (and a curse in some ways).
Look at the curse first. Claire can be brutally raped, but NEVER have physical evidence like bruises, vaginal tearing, etc.
The power is crazy. Instead of a rape victim, you could be a rapist. When the victim claims you must have a certain bruise on you, you don't.
You can kill people the way Claire appears to at the end of the last episode, or at least hurt big time, and claim you weren't there (because you don't have a scratch).
I hate to say this, but you could repeatedly pull off effective suicide bombings (and always live, without a scratch).
there's got to be some limit to hiro's powers. otherwise, he'd just be too powerful and make all the other heroes pointless.I predict an antithesis will show up; quite possibly himself from a parallel timeline or something. Stay tuned.

NBC has to edit (or blur) the Insinkerator brand name. Was that episode one? If so, that may explain the network not starting where they should. It's pretty lame to start with Episode 2.

Savageone79 10-18-06, 09:31 PM Hey after doing a search online I feel validated. There are many other people who think Ali Larter Looks just like Diana Krall do a search for both of their names and there are many times they are refernced together! Also I am sure it wasn't an accident that they played a Diana Krall song during her sex scene.

As to the first, I wonder about next week. The previews show Claire talking with her father - once with a large scrape on her cheek, the other without. She may have some 'splaining to do.
To the latter, Claire was, if not dead, in pretty bad shape until they removed the branch from her head. Suicide bombings do a lot more damage to the explosives carrier than that. Unless she's like the T1000 (or whatever the metal man was in T2) that melts together when you put the pieces close (and I doubt it), a bombing would probably take care of her. Plus, you'd be unlikely to find all of the pieces.
Roger Lococco 10-18-06, 10:05 PM I would say Ali's looks somewhat remind me of Diana Krall in a very general way,but there is not actually much of a resemblance. Also people say Mohinder's girlfriend reminds them of Audrey Tatou.

I said the exact same thing while they played the Diana Krall song to my family. They could easily be sisters...

Indeed, and Audrey Tatou smokes the GF.
I'm getting tired of Claire's dad asking her if there is something she wants to tell him. He's had his suspision for some reason and has seen the tape so why is he still asking? Be a dad & a man for once & tell her you know. He bugs me because he's such a tool.

Except for all the DNA your leaving behind. Regeneration alone is really not that powerful a power. It may mean you live forever, but you could spend enternity in a cage and never have the strength to get out.

I'm having a Rimbaldi flashback to the series finale of Alias.
But, back to Heroes...she obviously isn't someone you want to cross. She can run a car into something at high speed and be OK, but hope you aren't a passenger.
It will be interesting to see how the writers develop her....any consequences for being a vigiliante?

That's a big power to have against muggles. against the super types, not so much.
I don't know if they really thought through this or they were just brainstorming what powers the super friends will have and this got thrown out there. anyway, I'm sure they'll think of something to do with her. heck, if you can use aqua man...
I hate to say this, but you could repeatedly pull off effective suicide bombings (and always live, without a scratch).
she's not indestructible. If you chop her head off and throw it in the woodchipper, the head isn't going to crawl back to her body and reassemble.

CPanther95 10-19-06, 11:04 AM So, you can kill people by convincing them to get in the passenger seat of a vehicle you're driving? Doesn't that sound a little silly to anybody? I mean, I can think of hundreds of ways a non-superhero can kill someone with far less stringent circumstances.
Marcus Carr 10-19-06, 11:07 AM If she learns how to fight, like Hiro probably has, being indestructible will come in very handy. (Ever hear of Wolverine?) Maybe Hiro will take them all to the future to get combat training.

abricko 10-19-06, 11:45 AM It's been 4 episodes... I'm still watching but I find that I am not interested in most of the characters/side stories. I think the show has potential but it's dragging and most of the characters are not very interesting. I'm hoping it gets better now that they have a full season order... things need to happen to keep interest.
I had thought/complained about Lost moving slow but after re-watching all the episodes again, I find the old episodes to be both interesting and mysterious (even though you know most of the secrets from the episodes). I can't say the same for Heroes, I've re-watched the first 4 episodes and I find I'm less interested the second time around. The whole show seems like a watered down X-Men with small elements of a Lost unknown/mystery element.
Though, I am looking forward for Hiro to have a normal voice (not that high pitched school girl whine).
I'll keep watching and hope for it to improve.

remember she is a cheerleader so she should have strong legs and arms already. Not superhero strength but some muscles. Even though her being overpowered by her lover kind of kills this but she was taken by surprise. Even then she was crawling away and not fighting. She did kick him away.
CPanther95 10-19-06, 12:15 PM So the whole underworld should start quaking in their boots because an 18 year old cheerleader is going to learn how to fight? Were there any high school cheeleaders that could kick your butt in school?

I'd like to say that this show has driven me to buy a MDP-130(Hd tuner, capture card). Probably too late to record the Sunday night marathon. Are ya'll sure that wasn't a chicken foot in her head at the autopsy? I'll be able to tell about these things better when I can record in HD.

Don't know. I didn't fight all of them.;)
But is her power any less useful than being able to fly? We need to see how their powers will be used before we declare them to be useless.
Besides, what is she going to be doing while the others are saving the world, nothing?
Come on now.
CPanther95 10-19-06, 01:14 PM Don't know. I didn't fight all of them.;)
As Bradshaw would say: Now THAT'S funny! :D
Focus, people, focus!! She's destined to be a HERO. There is more than one way to be a hero. She has already rescued people from situations that should likely have killed her, that others couldn't do. (well, Hiro could) Fighting isn't necessarily a prerequisite, esp not with a whole troop of heroes working together.
Or, she could always get a gun, easy to win a firefight when the opposing bullets just go through you without long term effect.
About the missing first ep in the marathon on Sunday.....Is that Emerson issue really why it isn't there? I missed that one, and number 3. So I'm glad I get to catch up on #3. (finally have my Tivo set properly, won't miss more)

LOL
She can be thrust into situations that would kill others but not her. Fires, floods, radiation (probably), gunfire, etc. But yeah, I'm not quaking in my booties in a fight with her. Tie her up and walk away.

Hmm...radiation...
If our Heroes have come about their powers through some form of genetic mutation, she may not be safe from radiation. Radiation kills cells by breaking DNA chains in the nucleus. To many RADs and she may lose her regenerative power.

Well then the writers have done their job. That's how your supposed to feel about him. He one of the antagonists of the show.
He's a villian because he keeps asking his daughter the same question over & over when he has the answer? That doesn't make sense. Read what I wrote.
He's like the scratch on the top of your mouth that would only stop itching if you could stop tonguing it.
I'm curious to see what *power* he has over the black guy with all of the super abilities. Does he have power control over him, or just leadership control like over a governmental group?
mchias1 10-19-06, 01:30 PM what if the younger brother is able to use everyone's powers when they are in a group. he does mention he thinks he can use others powers when they are around. that's why he drags the Indian guy to the heroine dude.

Indesctructability plus flying I think would be the better combo. So if someone shot me out of the sky at altitude, I would live. Or if I accidentally flew into a billboard too fast, etc :-)

Big bro can probably fly on his own anytime he wants. Little bro is the power borrower. So big bro with regeneration would be the closest thing to Superman these guys would have.
Except I believe Sylar has all these powers already. He's gonna be a b*tch to take down.

but obviously when something is blocking her brain (i.e.: the stick/chicken foot from the previous two episodes) she can't fix herself...so there are downsides
I wonder what happens if she explodes what happens?

nashvillecat 10-19-06, 02:23 PM I guess she has a way to clot her blood also? She was all cut up and managed to, er, sew herself up. But the loss of blood would have made her look pasty white as a ghost! She can regenerate blood ceels too. COOL!
Evidently, she has more powers than I first imagined.
nuttyinnyc 10-19-06, 02:23 PM but obviously when something is blocking her brain (i.e.: the stick/chicken foot from the previous two episodes) she can't fix herself...so there are downsides
I wonder what happens if she explodes what happens?
I don't think it had anything to do with blocking her brain. It is just something foreign in or on her body. Remember she didn't heal completely from try 6 until she pulled it out a pice of medal from her side, then she healed instantly.
I don't think she can live being blown up. Like someone said earlier she probably won't have body parts find each part like the Terminator did.
lrowland 10-19-06, 04:02 PM Also keep in mind their powers are all growing a little with each episode. Claire's healing ability is stronger now than it was - look at how fast she healed after the autopsy versus her earlier experiments. Hiro's powers are certainly evolving.
I'm hoping that the writers make it so the artist doesn't have to shoot up to draw - this seems really wrong to me.
It looks like the next episode will finally see some real flying scenes - finally!
I think it would be cool to find out they are all adopted.

IrmoGamecoq 10-19-06, 04:27 PM Just as the AliLarter/DianaKrall talk died down, I'll dig it back up again.
(Hey, I just now managed to wade through this thread...memories of the Lost thread indeed)
Anyway, I've always seem the resemblance between the two as well, mostly because of the CD covers shown below:

Looking at them at CD-size, and not blown up as above, the resemblance is even closer.

Marc Alexander 10-20-06, 02:34 AM NBC’s “Heroes” (Monday, Sept. 25, 9 p.m.) is also set to get a gay character. On this show where normal people develop superpowers, high schooler Claire (Hayden Panettiere) has to deal with her newfound indestructibility and her best friend coming out. Look for the latter development midway through the season.

As far as the great Larter/Krall debate, I think you have to find a pretty bad photo (like above) of Ali to show some resemblance. If you want a look-alike for Krall, I'd say that a closer match would be the girl that played Driscoll's daughter on 24 - Day 4 that killed herself in the CTU-LA Medical facility (that should be renamed the CTU-Morgue ;) )

lemonsieur 10-20-06, 04:40 PM I don't think the silent black man has an anti-power power. I think he is an active telepath/psionic of some sort. As opposed to the cops apparently passive telepathy. He knocked the cop out by overloading his receptive/open channel telepathy. He can suppress peoples power if he can get in their mind and block it of/shut it down. When the creepy dad said go deep, and clear him out, i thought meant to probe deep to see what he knows, then blank his mind afterward so he wouldn't remember them. Maybe even block off the memory/pathways to his power as well.
lemonsieur 10-20-06, 04:46 PM As for Mimic and Hiro on the train...
I don't think of Hiro actually stopping time. I see it more of him stepping out of time or stopping its affect on him, hence everthing stands still to him when he does it. While Hiro was 'out of time' he got on the roof of the train, and the Mimic replicated his power and stepped 'out of time' as well, albeit in advertantly. Hence they both could talk to each other.
IrmoGamecoq 10-20-06, 04:48 PM I agree with Lemon on the silent black man. I'm thinking Psionic too. A similar, but more aggressive power, to what the cop has.

Wasn't it the "silent black man" who was trying to get the little girl in the basement of the FBI office?

I dont think it was inadvertant. Hiro came to give him the message. He either knew that Peter could mimic his power and thus stand outside of time's normal flow along with him, or Hiro will eventually have the ability to bring others along with him.
But there was no accident about it, he meant to communicate with Peter.

Yes this is the context that I meant. I agree Hiro meant to talk to Peter, and may even have knew Peter could mimic his power as well. But Peter did not actively try to use the power. It just sorta manifested. Haven't all his power manifestations been inadvertent?

Stinky-Dinkins 10-21-06, 01:36 AM Just got the chance to watch the last episode on my DVR.... very well done, this series to be getting better and better with each episode. Looks like the audio fidelity problems for the HD broadcasts have cleared up.
The homeless guy that brushed by Suresh seemed very oddly placed to me, very Rorschach... it's just silly guessing and speculation though. Suresh's lady friend also seems to be very suspicious, like a plant or something. Who knows though, it's all silly speculation.

Stinky-Dinkins 10-21-06, 02:08 AM The most unbelievable bit (and that's saying a lot for this show) had to be Hiro appearing at the end in the subway car speaking perfect, non-accented english. too many introductions in the pilot. not enough story you really didn't miss much. The fact that NBC has this really nice studio, they want to make sure they use it weekly and there was still Football being played so they only had 3 hrs to play with.
By showing the last three leading up to tonights new episode eveyone is caught up.
Plus, they may not have edited the In-Sink-Erator scene yet. :)
nuttyinnyc 10-23-06, 07:55 AM I don't think that had anything to do with it because they had it edited out of the replays on Sci fi and USA. I don't know what they did but I know a few people that saw it and didn't see that scene

UGH! I think I got screwed again on Episode 2. I failed to get it in HD the first time so I tried catching it this second round. I was in a hurry and I think I recorded the 2nd show assuming it would be the second episode. Titan still had FNL listed so I didn't know they were skipping the pilot  I need to check tonight and see what I recorded.
IrmoGamecoq 10-23-06, 09:23 AM They had already shown the pilot twice, so I guess they were thinking it was better to show the other episodes which had only aired once.
CPanther95 10-23-06, 10:14 AM Caught about a half-hour of one episode last night and it happened to be right at a spot that bugged me before but forgot to mention. What about the "frozen" martini looked poor to you?
Looked fine to me. It wasn't meant to be "Frozen" as in frozen cold, time had stopped so the molecules in the liquid weren't moving (that's what makes liquids liquids, you know - the molecules move around a lot, slide all around and over eachother. Without the molecules moving like this liquids would no different than the hardest solids.)
Did anyone else notice the symbol tattooed on Niki's back during the last episode? It was the same symbol seen scrolling in Mohinder's father's computer program after Mohinder first found (the removable HD in the lizard cage) it and put it into his computer.
CPanther95 10-23-06, 10:47 AM Hmmm, you may be right - I'm far removed from my last science courses. I was assuming the liquid would need to be "scooped" back into the glass.
So he should be able to cross a river on foot during frozen time.
Stinky-Dinkins 10-23-06, 10:56 AM So he should be able to cross a river on foot during frozen time.
Yep, should be able to. It wouldn't make sense to "stop" time and have rivers still flow, rain still drop, and water still move. If you notice when Hiro stood up to move the martini there was a man with a beard sitting at the table smoking a cigar and blowing rings of smoke. The smoke was frozen in time as well. It's impossible to go into what will happen down to every last detail scientifically speaking when "Time is frozen" because such a thing is impossible to begin with, stuff like the frozen martini is just interesting eye candy.
CPanther95 10-23-06, 11:03 AM Of course, why would someone that can teleport halfway around the world bother walking across a river. Hiro doesn't exactly look like he's into exercise. :)

On the SFX topic, did anyone else think the scene when Mimic was floating in the air in front of his brother, and did the whole Wile E. Coyote thing, was poorly done? For some reason that just screamed bad SFX.

Remember it is still a network TV show and Cost Conscious NBC. I rather a full season of episodes and good writing then spend a fortune on SFX. Then the show could last.
I am with stinky, I don't see that big a problem about the SFX so far.

CPanther95 10-23-06, 12:47 PM :D
Although I think the point of that was for it to be witnessed and to test someone's faith. Hiro would have no witnesses, except possibly for Mimic, and there's no reason to test his faith because he seems willing to believe just about anything. :)

Seen the commercials for awhile now but finally began to watch last night. I think I'm hooked.
Speaking of the symbol, yes, I noticed it early on and quite a few times over the course of the last three episodes. In artwork, jewlery, and elsewhere. Most notably and perhaps most relevantly, in the genetic sequence that Mohinder was viewing on the laptop.
Others have pointed out the many "symbol" spottings and the conclusion I came to was similar to what's already been suggested by some here: the symbol represents "the gene" that they likely all share.
What about the "frozen" martini looked poor to you?

You reminded me of some of my engineering classes: Heat refers only to energy in transit between systems, so if the molecules are *locked* in motion, they are at 0 degrees Kelvin where nothing could be colder and no heat energy remains in a substance, so wouldn't Hiro freeze to death?
We're talking about time travel here. It's all relative :D
Stinky-Dinkins 10-23-06, 03:17 PM You reminded me of some of my engineering classes: Heat refers only to energy in transit between systems, so if the molecules are *locked* in motion, they are at 0 degrees Kelvin where nothing could be colder and no heat energy remains in a substance, so wouldn't Hiro freeze to death?
It's really impossible to speculate what would happen scientifically in a scientifically-impossible scenario, even basic things like how he is able to easily move around in and displace gas (like the various gasses that surround everything - Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, nitrogen etc.) if their molecules are locked in non-motion, or why gravity continues to affect him when time and gravity are stopped. We are talking about a Japanese kid who can travel and stop time though... and a guy who can fly... and a drug addict who can paint the future. Maybe he leaves our dimension and ports himself into a different reality (where concepts like time, energy, heat, matter, etc. may not even be relevant let alone exist) when he uses his powers, and is no longer bound by the rules that govern how everything has to work within this one (but can still somehow interfere with this dimension.) Suspension of disbelief, fantasy is the only real explanation.

So then, wouldn't this be a good arguement for who has the greatest power?
CPanther95 10-23-06, 05:03 PM Assuming he masters the activation of his power and doesn't need 5 seconds of looking like he's trying to pass a bowling ball - Hiro would definitely have to be considered the most "super".
Cheerleader and junkie psychic would be at the other end of the spectrum (unless the junkie can direct his visions to a particular topic at will).
