I recently got a Dish Network VIP622 receiver with HD programming. I was initially using the receiver via its HDMI connection to my Panasonic XR-57, then to my 32" Sony LCD. I had heard how Dish offers Dolby Digital Encoding with this receiver but via my HDMI input I didn't receive a Dolby signal on my XR57. I then tried hooking the receiver through its component input with optical cable for audio, and then I did receive the Dolby signal on my Panasonic receiver. Several questions I had...

1. Is there any way to receive Dolby sound via HDMI?
2. Could I use HDMI for video and seperate optical cable for audio?
3. For those who have this receiver, how do you get better video quality... HDMI or Component?? (I have tried distinguising between two but it is hard when you can't view two TVs side by side)

I greatly appreciate any input any of you may have. Thank you!

Pretty sure HDMI only does 2 channel audio. I have HDMI hooked up to my samsung 42" DLP, and the optical out connected to my Onkyo reciever. The sat remote can run everything, the volume up/down adjusts my receiver volume, ect. Im not sure if there is much of a difference, but why not go with teh HDMI if you already have the cable and it works ok. I have a great picture, and dolby 5.1 in anything that broadcasts it :)

OK, I didn't recently specify this but the principal reason why I am asking these questions regarding HDMI and component, is because my Panasonic receiver and Sony LCD only have one HDMI input each, which I have two devices with HDMI outputs --> my VIP 622 DishNetwork receiver and my Philips UpConverting DVD Player. I have been going back and forth on which to use component and which to use with HDMI. What do you guys think my best bet is?

The HDMI version on that box only supports 2 channel audio. As for HDMI or component for video, if you can't see a difference then it doesn't matter. I think most use the HDMI when they can but a bunch of people have reported the HDMI stopped working after a few months due to bad solder connections inside the box.

I don't have Dish and I hope its OK to ask in this thread. But was thinking about subscribing to DISH and was wondering if OTA HD and DISH HD guide on VIP622 & VIP211. are intergraded on same guide. Thanks

Yes, but you HAVE to get the locals from dish to get the guide data. I sat here with the installer and the guide data never showed up, we called in, got the locals, reset the box, and boom there it was. You wont even get guide data for all you OTA channels, just the main ones(abc, cbs, nbc, fox, pbs(maybe),ect. Your OTA channels will show up as the color orange in the guide, so they are easy to spot.

Yes, this is how i have mine hooked up intill i get a receiver with hdmi switching.

For my setup(622 to ae-900u pj/sampo plasma) I get a noticable difference with the hdmi input. I am running a 50 ft blue jeans hdmi cable to the ae-900u and the picture is brighter/sharper than the component.

Gater- I'm using a Pioneer 84txsi, which has 4 hdmi inputs and 1 output. If I were to want to use hdmi for video and optical for audio, would I have to run hdmi directly to my plasma and the optical to the receiver? It doesn't seem like it would work if I ran both to the receiver.

Run hdmi from your 622 to your pioneer hdmi INPUT. Run optical from your 622 to your pioneer optical INPUT. Run hdmi from your pionner OUTPUT to your tv. This will work. Since my reciever has no HDMI, i just have the hdmi hooked directly to my TV, and optical to the reciever. Either way will work.

Thanks for the input cooldude. I haven't had a chance to try this yet but here is my question and concern. First, if I do run both my hdmi and optical cables from my 622 to my receiver, what to I set the input to on the receiver? I think you can only set it to one input (for example, dvd, cd, hdmi 2, cable/sat, etc). So if I set the receiver to hdmi, then I wouldn't get the sound from the optical cable. Second, I'm not sure I follow you regarding running an optical cable from the receiver output to the hdmi input.

HDMI has the bandwidth to do about anything you throw at it. The limitation isn't with HDMI.

sorry, ignore that last part(edited and took it out), i got a little carried away lol. I would think you can set it up to work that way with your receiver. Given mine is a little easier since i have no HDMI to mess with, but i can select optical or coax for any intput(v1,v2,svid,ect), so surely yours can do something along the same lines. Or if you dont want to mess with video switching(not sure how many other A/V devices you have) then just hook the 622 hdmi directly up to your tv, and the optical to your pionner, and disable tv speakers, and you should be set.

Got it. I'll try both. I just can't belive DishNetwork didn't implement 5.1 thru the hdmi. It defeats one of the purposes of this great technology. Hopefully this will change when their next box comes out.

Heys guys, I've been searching for some help. An this looks like the place to get it. I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR604 receiver (2 in HDMI in, 1 HDMI out). I also have a progressive scan Sony dvd with HDMI, and a Sony KV-27HS420 (2 HDMI inputs). I also have Dish Network with the VIP622.

I'm not sure how to set it all up. I figured it would be dvd HDMI and VIP622 HDMI to the receiver, the HDMI out of the receiver to the tv. But I'm not sure if this is the way to do it.

I have the dvd working, with sound and picture. No extra RCA cables attached. But for the VIP622, I'm not really sure it's working. Does HDMI take care of everything or do I still need YPPLR cables in there somewhere? I wonder because I had no video of the receiver menu when it was in this configuration and I was playing the dvd.

From reading the posts here, it almost sounds that people are taking the HDMI from the VIP622 to their tv and then taking the audio out to the receiver. IS this the best way?

All help is appreciated!

That is how i have mine hooked up. Hdmi from the 622 to the tv, then bitstream(toslink) from the 622 to the receiver. The 622 passes component and hdmi signals simultaneously, so you'll just have to set the tv to the hdmi input. There have been reports that the hdmi connection on the 622 can be buggy.

Is this receiver required to plug in telephone line? since my TV is about 40 feet from my telephone jack. Their rep told me that the DVR needs to plug in the telephone jack. I told him that I don't want to have telephone line running inside the house, then he said that I can get a wireless transmiter for another $40. So I don't know if this sounds right or not. I don't want to pay any more money if it's not really necessary.

But, to be honest, I've never seen them priced quite that low. They usually average about 60 or 70 bucks. Maybe there are places online that have them cheaper.

But I thought using telephone line only for ordering PPV stuffs.I've never ordered PPV and don't plan to.that's why I think it's ridiculous for me to pay more money on something that I'll never use. oh! and he said if I don't want to, then I have to pay $5.00 extra per month. that is something.

Well, I do know that my tuner is set to call out at 6:00 am every day, and my phone bill reflects this.

So it's for more than that. As I understand it, it's to keep track of what you've been watching for their marketing purposes. (Probably selling that info to the Federal Government too, as part of the "data mining" they shell out millions for, to the companies that specialize in gathering that kind of info.)

Has anyone figured out a way to default a DVR timer to "record once" instead of the default setting (record all episodes).

Its a pain in the can if you forget to adjust it with each recording. If you've found the trick please share.

I was told the same thing.. either pay the $5 a month or hook it to my phone line. Lucklily I had a phone line wired right in where the VIP622 sits. For $5 a month they are welcome to study my viewing habits! :D

Hey,

I'm new here and think the VIP622 is a great product. Great HDTV, great interface, massive hard drive, three tuners, good job with OTA integration, etc. I couldn't ask for a whole lot more. Seems like by and large this is a very overlooked product and its nice to see it has its own place on the AVS forums.

I'm getting my antenna moved from my attic to my roof on Friday to pull in even more HDTV locals. Anyone else using an antenna for locals?

Anyone else spring for a pocket dish yet? I got one for $80 after rebate on ebay. With the 622 and the included USB cable you can download 20 hours of SD programming to it in an hour. Great on a plane!

Ok, that's what I did but I'm having a mental block this manual sucks. Can you tell me exactly how you have it?

I have HDMI from 622 to my TV.
I have HDMI from my dvd to my Onkyo, then Onkyo up to the TV HDMI. (I have this working)
I then bought a toslink and put it from the 622 to the Onkyo.

Now here's where I need the clarification. The toslink is independent from the VIDEO1,2,&3,4, so how do I set up the receiver to here my Bose? Do I need to put a video cable from the Onkyo to my TV? A Video cable from the 622 to the Onkyo? Do I need to put a video cable from the receiver to the TV anyway to see the Onkyo menu on my TV?

For the TV to play through the receiver, it should be on what? V1,V2,V3,V4 or Tuner?

I figured out earlier how to turn off my tv speakers but in this configuration, if I do that, I get no sound because I don't have a about 2 steps right. Can you help Gater? Thanks!

Hey,

A lot of people using antenna for OTA HD locals. In my area (Portland) I receive the locals from Dish, but still keep my antenna to get some HD locals not available from the bird like PBS and CW and also, just because the PQ is better.

Ok, try this. The toslink that goes from the 622 will go to the back of the receiver into the "opt in1" located right below the orange coax inputs. Now i'm not to familiar with your receiver but like my H/K, you'll have to select for example; "video 1" and assign it "optical 1" as its input source. As far as assigning input sources you'll have to check the manual for that.

Do I need to put a video cable from the receiver to the TV anyway to see the Onkyo menu on my TV?

You can use the s-video or yellow video cable to see the receivers menu on your tv. Those inputs are located on the back of the receiver in the middle labled "monitor out".

For the TV to play through the receiver, it should be on what? V1,V2,V3,V4 or Tuner?

See the first question.:)

Let us know if you still need help, and i can look through your receivers manual for specifics.

I just realized you have hdmi switching capabilities.
I have HDMI from 622 to my TV.
I have HDMI from my dvd to my Onkyo, then Onkyo up to the TV HDMI. (I have this working)
I then bought a toslink and put it from the 622 to the Onkyo.

You could also connect the hdmi from the 622 to the Onkyos hdmi input. I assume you have the dvd players hdmi connected to one of the Onkyos hdmi inputs and the Onkyos hdmi output to the tv. The other hdmi input "in" from the receiver would go to the 622.
Are you confused yet?

Summerize:
1. 622 hdmi to Onkyo hdmi "in"
2. dvd player hdmi to Onkyo hdmi "in"
3. Onkyo hdmi "out" to tv hdmi "in"
Now you should get sound from your speakers by selecting one of the two inputs on the receivers hdmi; dvd or 622

First time poster...

I just had a Pioneer 84TXS and a Bell ExpressVu 9200 (same as Dish 921?) installed last week. The dish came with a HDMI - DVI connector that the installer swapped for a HDMI - HDMI. I haven't been able to receive digital sound from the satellite even after I installed an optical cable between the 84 receiver and satellite box. THe inputs are properly set on the 84.

I am wondering if the 84 is being "tricked" into believing the audio comes from the HDMI because the cable is HDMI - HDMI instead of HDMI - DVI. Make sense? I want to swap the cables back to test my theory, but the cabinet is a pain to get into and I am wanting to be sure.

Thoughts?

You know what, I got it! I had called up Onkyo and was waiting for a Tech guy and I figured it out from your posts. I'm keeping it the way it is, with the optical. I've read that the HDMI direct from TV to 622 is better than going through a receiver. And I like the fact that in this config my speakers on the TV still work, instead of switching them off and using variable when I plug into the Onkyo. I also can keep it down when the wife is sleeping. Thanks for the help. I got it because of you and those cool forum!

I also had the antenna installed on my roof when I had the Dish installed. But there is limits with this system that I don't like concerning the DVR. I want to see if eveyone else has the same problems....

1. When I DVR my local channels in HD through my antenna, I can't switch the channel to another local HD channel without it asking me cancel the recording because I'm changing the channnel. Now I can go to a Dish channel and watch it, but not another local. Why?

2. That brings up my second point. If I want watch NCIS and House at the same time, of course I have to DVR one. But since I can't dvr one in HD and watch the other in HD, I'm stuck DVRing one off the Dish local channels not in HD while I watch the other off my antenna in HD. It really sucks and ticks me off. Anyone figure a way around this?

3. While DVRing on a dish channel, or an antenna channel, the recall button never works properly. Say I'm DVRing CSI and I want to catch the game score on ESPN, when I try to recall back t CSI it instead throws me to PIP channel associated with the ESPN channel. If I want to got back to CSI, I need to scan through the guide and reselect it.

Anyone have similiar problems and or figure out a fix? I'd love to be able to DVR a local HD channel and watch a local HD channel at the same time.

Simple test: unplug the HDMI from the "84" and connect the optical cable to a port that you have previously tested with another device (say a DVD player).

When recording an HD channel through your antenna(OTA), you can switch to another dish channel like you said or switch to a Dish HD local channel if you have them in your area, which you should.

Like question #1, you should be able to record one off the HD OTA antenna, and watch the other in HD off the Dish HD locals. I have all the Dish locals in HD except for fox.

Say I'm DVRing CSI and I want to catch the game score on ESPN, when I try to recall back t CSI it instead throws me to PIP channel associated with the ESPN channel. Make sure your 622 is in "dual mode". I'm assuming you have another tv hooked up to the 622?

Anyone have similiar problems and or figure out a fix? I'd love to be able to DVR a local HD channel and watch a local HD channel at the same time.

The "Why" behind it is simple -- your vip622 only comes with ONE dedicated antenna (OTA) tuner. This OTA tuner is dedicated to your antenna feed, and can not be used outside of that antenna feed. Therefore, one tuner can only be tuned to one thing from your antenna at a time.

Mind you, your 622 has THREE, count them THREE tuners. Two are dedicated to the DISH and one to OTA. You can watch one HDTV show via DISH, record another from the DISH, and record yet a third from your OTA antenna. There is no other product on the market that I am aware of that has more than 3 HDTV tuners. But even with three tuners you still only can do one thing at a time with your antenna feed.

Solutions? Get HDTV locals via DISH or settle for a recording/watching a SD feed via DISH for your 2nd choice in a given time slot.

I have not experienced the other issues you mentioned.

Hello all! Nice to meet everyone.

After 7 years of being tossed around by DirecTV and their lack of HDTV I’m thinking it’s time to go DISH.

This HD DVR they offer would be one of 3 HD receivers I would get and I have 2 questions.

1. the Format button… all the user guides says it “press to toggle formats”… what are the formats supported? Ill assume pillar box and streach are supported… but I hate thouse setting when watching 4:3 programming. Does it offer Zoom 1, 2, or crop settings?
2. I know it was already asked, but not clearly answered. Will the HDMI carry the digital audio out to the TV? I’m in a battle with another vendor right now who’s HDMI product do not carry digital audio out via HDMI, so that device is NOT HDMI, it doesn’t meet the criteria specified in the HDMI standard. I really hope that’s not the case with this receiver…

Thanks so much for you help

1. Yes, it supports zoom, partial zoom and crop.

2. I haven't try it myself, but I heard that it does.

The full Zoom mode is especially useful. When you are watching a SD show that is letterboxed widscreen, the full zoom makes it fill the screen with no stretch distortion. I use this for Stargate SG-1 on SciFi channel which is SD but letterboxed widescreen.

Last night I changed my HDMI cable to the HDMI/DVI cable that came with the receiver and added a digital optical cable and I started receiving digital audio right away.

The Bell CSR previously told me that this receiver only transmits 2-ch audio through the HDMI and my setup seemed to confirm that.

Sorry, I should have been more clear in my post. The audio from the Dish receiver through the HDMI port is 2-ch Analog, not digital. In order to get digital sound, you need to utilize the optical connection. (or so I was told by Bell)

hmmm, intresting....

sounds like the other issues im fighting now...

can you get a "any" digital audio from the HDMI at all?

if not, well, then its not a "HDMI out" as it does not meet the standards of HDMI (transfer digital video and audio from a single source)... same issue im having with another vendor :(

No, my A/V receiver auto detects the source signal and all I could get (before swapping cables) was a PCM stereo signal, which I presume is analog?? If I switched to my DVD player, the A/V receiver automatically switched to 5.1 digital so I would say that the HDMI signal is only analog.

The manual for the satellite receiver even states that for 5.1 digital, you need to hook up an optical cable...

thanks again, for the record, i called dish tech support and it's a known issue... oh well, i can give the dish an optical in on the A/V.

Last question, i swear, how good is the partial zoom settings when viewing 4:3. full zoom is ok, but it cuts too much of their heads off...

PS: ordered dish today, installed tomorow, thanks everyone for you help.

GATER and Weasals,

I live outside Ann Arbor, MI. I do have local channels through the Dish, but they are not in HD. They are digital only. The locals channels I get in HD are off my antenna. So why do you guys get your locals channels in HD through Dish? If that was the case for me, I proably wouldn't have gotten the antenna...

I'm a little bit confused about the output resolutions on the unit. Specifically, I'm not sure whether to set the unit to 720p or 1080i. I have my 622 connected to a Samsung HLS4266W, which has a native resolution of 720p as I understand it. It is also my understanding that most of the HD channels broadcast at 1080i, the exceptions being the ESPNs.

So, with that in mind, I set the output resolution of the box to 1080i, figuring that that will basically let the box pass through most HD channels without scaling and let the TV scale back down to 720p. From what I hear, TV scalers are typically better than STB scalers, so that was my motivation.

Now that I think about it, though, I think I may want to change that up. First of all, I think this means that my ESPN broadcasts are getting scaled twice - once up to 1080i by the unit and then again back down to 720p by the tv. If the unit were set to 720p, I wouldn't have any scaling on those. Also, are the SD channels scaled by the unit? They seem to be, so if I'm scaling them to 1080i, the tv is again scaling them back down. I could at least eliminate the second rescaling if this is the case by switching the output to 720p.

The only channels that might be affected negatively by this would be the 1080i HD broadcasts, because they would be scaled down to 720p by the 622 and not the tv. That is the majority of the HD channels, which is why I set it to 1080i in the first place, but now I'm not sure that I'd notice the difference.

Anyhow, I'll be playing around with this over the weekend. I suppose my eyes are really the best test of all this. I just want to be sure that I correctly understand how everything is being scaled. Can anybody help me out with that?

As you can see below, Detroit is the closest city that has locals in HD through Dish Network. I don't know if you are on detroits grid but try one of the hd locals in the 6000 range like 6459, which is the ABC HD affiliate. The reason I have locals HD is so I can watch/record a HD local channel off the OTA antenna, and watch/record another HD local channel off the dish local.

I made a phone call to them right after I posted and solved the problem. I got dish in March. The new Dish 1000+ came a couple months after that and that's what I need to get local HD channels through Dish. I'm going to get the upgrade hopefully next week.

But that in turn speaks volumes on Dish customer satisfaction. I should have been informed about the upgrade and gotten it done back then, not now!

I have a new plasma and try my best to avoid the 4:3 screens. I typically use my TV aspect ratio. However, I have found that the DISH setting for "stretch" works quite well ... I like it better than their zooms.

I also don't have a grey side bar option on my TV, but the VIP622 offers it as one of the fomat (aspect ratio) settings.

I live closer to Grand Rapids and do not have HD Locals available from Dish, the rumors I hear are not til 2008. Anyways, I am in the same boat as you. I have an OTA for HDTV locals, and DISH supplies the Standard Definition locals and the guide. I've certainly been able to work with the pair to watch more TV than I need too ! :)

I use this as well for 4:3 material. I think it works well also. The 622 also recalls my settings for 4:3 or 16:9 channels. For example, if i'm watching Discovery HD, the receiver "remembers" to set the aspect as 16:9, or "normal"; then if i were to switch to USA network the receiver "remembers" to set the aspect as "stretched".

Hi all,

Had my antenna taken from my garage attic to my roof today. I had not been pulling in anything from 3 or 41 and at times others were spotty. Figured since the Superbowl is on CBS I'd be doing it in the future anyways...

I live in Grandville and pulled in 19 digital feeds/channels after having it moved to my roof. My vip622 shows digital feeds for:

8 and 17 at 100%,
3 at 95%,
41 at 85%
35,43,52 at 75-85% (but I don't really care)

I still don't get channel 13's digital feeds.

The antenna is a "Royal 17". I was very happy with the service from Carl at Kent-Ottawa antenna. I have probably 100' - 125' of rg-6 cable with no booster or amp. Very happy with the signal its pulling in.

The Dish Network VIP622 gives you 30 dedicated HDTV channels, and add to that the local stuff -- hardly have to watch SD stuff anymore!

If your Plasma is calibrated you don't need need to worry about burn-in whan watching non-streched 4:3. But in any case the gray-bars mode is safer.

In another thread, it has been suggested that the VIP622 and some TV's = image retention.

Does anyone have IR issues with the VIP622?

I haven't had any problems, but I always turn my tv off when I'm done using it.

When you turn the 622 off, it doesn't really shut off. This isn't so bad (except the hard drive doesn't spin down, but that's another story), but it also doesn't shut off the display. Instead, it puts out a screen saver with the dish logo and a message saying "Press SELECT to continue" or something like that. This logo moves pretty slowly, so if you let it sit there I could see where you could possibly have image retention issues. I think that's what people are talking about with this.

Walter,

I know that in some other threads folks are FANATICAL about image retention on plasmas. I've been careful to adjust my contrast/brightness down and have a few hundred hours of careful use on my tv. You thinking that "reasonable" use (like 25% 4:3 viewing) would be no problem?

Recently switched from directv ( after 11 years ) to Dish. Still had older crt tv. Installer ? setup where we had to leave a/v on aux & push tv button on remote to play dvd/vcr.
We have just bought a new hdtv ( kds-r60xbr2 ) Sony. Have been moving cables for days and I am as lost as before. Dvd gets sound but no video. I tried all inputs but none would get video. We would appreciate any help. This is my hookup now.
vip 622 dish - hdmi to tv hdmi
vip 622 dish - optical audio to a/v ( rca stav-4090 ) digital in ( tv/sat ) assignable
a/v monitor out - component to tv ( hd/dvd in )
sonic blue - go video ( dvr 4300 ) dvd out w/component to a/v dvd/ld in
sonic blue - go video digital audio out to a/v dvd/ld digital in

Called Ram electronics trying to find way to go from pc ( dvi ) to tv ( rgb ). Tech gave this forum as best to learn something about hdtv & hookup.

Thank you

I have 2 antenna so that I can wacth local HD with the built in HD TV tuner and record HD local with the 622. Would be nice if dish would provide the locals in HD like they told me would happen very soon but for sure before the end of the year back in May.

Hello,

I was at Costco tonight and I came across the VIP622. It was for sale for $450 or something, and had a $200 "rebate" if you were willing to change it to a lease agreement. It did not appear from looking at the packaging that if I were to purchase one of the units and not accept the rebate that I would be required to subscribe to Dish network.

My current setup consists of an older HDTV (component input only) a Samsung SIR 151 set top box for OTA HDTV reception and an Onkyo tuner for dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. I am quite happy with my setup as it give me great picture, great sound and no monthly fees. I would, however, like to be able to record in HDTV. I also have analog Comcast cable and a VCR so when I do want to record something, that's the way I go. Let me tell you that the difference in quality from an ATSC broadcast of Lost and a VHS replay of Lost is truely amazing.

I have been keeping my eyes out for a good OTA HDTV DVR for quite some time now and the VIP622 seems like a great unit for this purpose if it will work without a Dish network subscription.

How does the OTA HDTV recording feature work? Does it require a Dish network subscription?

Hello,

How does the OTA HDTV recording feature work? Does it require a Dish network subscription?

I'm not sure if the box will work at all without a dish subscription. The OTA feed integrates with the screen guide IF you purchase the DISH locals. You then just select anything on the guide (OTA or DISH FEED) and indicate you want to record it.

I'd think that without the DISH service the VIP622 probably isn't for you -- but I'm not sure if there are mods or ways to simply use it as a 200GB video recorder.

If it matters DISH's HDTV lineup (30 channels of dedicated HD) combined with an OTA HD antennea will provide the most HDTV programming anywhere...

I have the VIP622.
In Set up I was setting the HD output to 1080i but when I received my new SONY KDS-R60XBR2 on Tuesday I did not like the picture quality so I changed the output to 720p.

The picture looked better.

Is it better to leave it at 720p and allow the SONY to upscale the picture to 1080p via the HDMI connect??

I would appreciate some input from knowledgeable forum members.

Thanks

I would suspect whether sending a 720p or 1080i signal to the HDTV is best depends on the source of the signal and the native display of the HDTV. ABC, FOX, and ESPN transmit in 720p all other channels transmit in 1080i.

If your TV is 1080i native and the show is 1080i then sending the 720p to the TV requires a 1080i->720p->1080i conversion. If on the other hand the TV is 720p native and the show is 720p then sending the TV a 1080i requires a 720p->1080i->720p conversion.

If your TV is 1080i native then a show that is 1080i is best sending a 1080i to the TV. If the show is 720p then sending a 1080i to the TV requires the STB to do the conversion. Sending the 720p to the TV requires the TV to do the conversion. Usually the TVs are better at doing the conversion than STB.

Thanks Rick!

My TV is native 1080p
Would 720p be best?
It would seem the upconversion would occur with VIP622 @ 720p--upscale to 1080i channels (when receiving 1080i) and then to 1080p (upconverted by the SONY XBR2 via HDMI.
Is this correct?

Dish says that they are working on a pass through mode for the 622. In this mode the 622 will send to the TV whatever format the 622 is recieving. This probably would be best for you. Don't know the time frame for this mode for the 622 however.

Well based on some of the posts here and in other threads decided to do the jump to dish from Comcast. Now just a cpl questions

1) This is what Im supposed to get:
the 622 box, supposedly their newest Dish (something 1000) Plat HD pkg +HD locals Montly cost for 10 months of $84, then after 10 months bill willl go up to $104. Since I pay Comcast $90 a month after they do a $25 credit & only HBO and Sho movie channels it seems like Dish is a good deal, am I correct?

2) Several posts talk about being able to actually record 3 HD channels at one time. 2 via the Dish and 1 via OTA hjow should the box be set. Since its mainly for my WS TV do I want it in Single or duel mode. For example say on one night there are 3 local channels all with hd goodness shows I want to be able to set say 9HD on one tuner to record, Fox HD on the 2nd tuner and say 2 in HD via OTA.

3) also wondering if anyone has heard if Dish is going to pick up CW(2) in HD sometime in the near future. Not really sure why they dont have it already. Seems here in Denver they get HD locals for CBS NBC ABC Fox but no CW right now. They do carry 2 in SD tho so am hoping there are plans to add its HD version.

Sorry if these seem like dumb questions or that have been answered before but better to ask here than the CS's at Dish to get informed answers, hehe

Sincere Thanks for info/advice :D

1. Dish does seem cheaper than cable when I compared them. I think the platnium is ALL the channels that DISH carries, including all movie channels, right? If you wanted you could get HD-Silver plus six channels of HBO for something like $74 a month ($54 during the rebate period). You'd be missing the National Geographic HD channel and the other movie channels. Anyways, no matter how you look at it its a better deal than cable.

2. If you are just using it on one TV you can use the single mode -- it allows a really nice P&P feature using the DISH's tuners. If you want to watch DIFFERENT things on DIFFERENT TV's you need to switch to DUAL mode. You can switch between the modes with one button press on the 622's front panel. I generally leave ours on dual mode (the second feed runs to a distribution center and four other TV's in the home). I switch to single mode when watching live sports for the P&P feature.

It does have three tuners. You can do exactly what you describe above. Obviously you need an antenna to pull this off. The only other limiting factor is that it will only hold 25-30 hours of HD material that you record -- so if you are recording 3 HDTV shows a night its gonna fill up quick!

Now here's another tidbit to fry your brain. You could record the three at once while watching TWO more previously recorded HDTV shows on different TV's in your home -- therefore shuffling a grand total of 5 HDTV shows at once!!

3. I live in the Grand Rapids market -- all our HDTV locals have to come via OTA.

Yeah, those CSR's are a real crapshoot!

Chow,
Mark

You can view the HD channels fine but of course they will not be in HD. The 622 outputs composite and S-video so using a SDTV is ok.

The 622 has 2 satellite tuners so it can be set up to handle two TVs. Each of these 2 TVs can be watching a separate prerecorded show while the 622 is recording 3 shows using the 2 satellite and one OTA tuners.

Yes you will need a HDMI/HDMI cable. Buy one on ebay and save yourself a LOAD of money compared to electronic stores.

The 1000 dish is capable of pulling in 3 satellites, its only slightly larger than the 500 dish. It has 3 LNB's. Hopefully your installer will handle it for you.. its not a huge deal.

Well so far so good, hehe. Installer showed up on time, was quick and professional. Had me up and running in less than 2 hrs and seems he was able to use the mounting deal from my old DTV somehow so no new holes in roof or wall. So far everything works great and the one HD local they don't offer, CW2, comes in great via the OTA.

Hey All, I'm a noob also. Expecting my new plasma tmw. Will get the 622 within a few weeks (probably not soon enough!!) and had a question I hadnt noticed before.. I currently have the 508/510 (not sure which) dish PVR (not leased). My question is - can I still use that receiver on a third tv and use that PVR function or will the subscription only support one active PVR unit? Would they charge for the 2nd PVR or can that be used "under the table" just as a recorder? In the back of my mind I'm afraid the card would deactivate the PVR function if I'm not paying for it but thought I'd ask. It's not a huge deal yet b/c I dont have a third TV, but just thinking of the future..
Anyone tried something like this?
Thanks,
Tim

ps. been trolling the forums for a while while researching and I really appreciate all the great info here!!!

The 501 and I think 508 NEVER will have any charges for the PVR feature, unlike all the new boxes. However, they will still charge you the $5 or so for a second TV feed.

I ended up selling my 501 on ebay for about $150. I take the second feed on the 622 and run it to a video distributer. It shows up on 4 TV;s in the home. I bought a couple extra UHF+ remotes and I can operate that second tuner from anywhere in the house. Dish does not charge a second box/tv charge for the dual tuner 622.

Thanks for the info Weasels. Thats not a bad idea. I also realized that I get pretty good reception for local channels (more than are broadcast through the satelite) so I will probably save $5 on the subscription for that. I had a decent antenna in the attic from before and it seems to pull things in well. Once I get the 622, I can record the OTA stuff too, if I read the previous posts correctly.. Now to find a good wall mount at a good price. I've seen some links around here, just gotta find them again..
Thanks again!

to integrate the OTA locals with the dish guide, and the one-touch recording you need to pay for your DISH locals.

I'm not sure what shows up if you dont pay for the DISH locals. Perhaps you can set it to record based upon timeframes or something like that. Anyone out there have just OTA locals and no DISH locals? How easy is it to record?

The 622 OTA tuner is a HDTV tuner. (It takes in any digital signal, SD or HD).

I am considering whether to dump cable and then get a 622 in the great room, from which I would feed the 2nd TV output to the guest room. If someone is in the guest room channel surfing, what tuners are left for the great room and how can they be used? Could I still record one show off the dish while watching another if someone is watching live TV upstairs?

There are two satellite tuners and one OTA tuner in the 622. If upstairs is using satellite tuner 2 to channel surf and you are using satellite tuner 1 to record a program, that only leaves the OTA tuner to watch live TV downstairs.

If you attempt to change the channel downstairs to a satellite channel you will get a banner page saying that to continue will stop the recording in process and ask you whether you want to continue or cancel.

There are only 2 satellite tuners on the 622. If someone is surfing (watching) on the "Guest Room" (TV2), then you can only watch live or record on the great room (TV1).
However, an interesting extreme scenario is that you could be recording 3 shows (2 from satellite and 1 OTA) while at the same time watching 2 different previously recorded shows on the Great Room and Guest Room (I've done that).

I just had my 622 installed yesterday, it looks like OTA output is not pass through, I don’t get OTA signals on the TV1&TV2 directly from the OTA it comes from 622. I thought that 622 would modulate Sat signal and transmit so TV2 would tune to assigned channel (21-69) without affecting the rest of OTA channels. Am I missing something or that is intended operation.

Intended operation is for a second TV hookup is for it operate like a stand alone receiver. It has a second tuner and a UHF remote that works through the walls. Select channel 140, 9420, or 8 on this second tuner and that's the DISH feed you get on the TV.

The OTA tuner integrates with the channel guide on TV #1. You can watch a recorded OTA show on either TV 1 or 2. However, the OTA signal does not pass through to TV2.

If you want to watch something live off of your antenna it has to be on TV1 (at least that's how my system is set up). My TV antennea integrates with TV1 perfectly. You need to go to the DISH menu and set it up to find the OTA channels first, however.

If it is showing that it means the 622 TUNER you want (Either TV1 or TV2) is shut off. You could leave it on all the time I guess, but that isn't recommended. The select button simply turns on the respective tuner you want to use.

Thats a little different than my needs, so its out of my knowledge base. Does the owners manual say anything about it?

Could you get a hook-up for the back of your TV to run both feeds into? They used to have them for all kinds of things like video games in the old days -- and you'd flip a switch on the hookup box to select between the signals. There should be something like that to run two coax feeds into...

I subscribe to locals. This allows the second TV to get all the SD locals from satellite. As a result there is no need to have my second TV tune OTA.

I pay Dish Home Protection on the one receiver I own, the 811. It has come in handy because E* has replaced this receiver once after the one I bought died. I do not pay this on the other receivers because I lease them. I do not believe E* should be charging you for this on leased receivers. It is optional coverage even on receivers you own as I elected it a few months after I bought my 811 which, in my case, turned out for the better.

We just sign up for DISH HD Silver and have a few q's
1.We'll have the 622 for the den and a separate hd box for the bedroom, how do get access to the dvr recordings on the bedroom tv?
2.Will the recordings be in true high def over coax or composite on the bedroom tv? 3.Do they charge extra for the ota antenna if I get locals through the dish?
4.How do we ensure the install goes well, the best dish 1000? and proper signal level?
5.Are there questions I should ask the tech?

I have had Crapcast for years and am looking forward to a clear picture.

1) You'll need a coax (or composite/s-video, I'm using coax) run from the 622 to your TV in the bedroom. You tune the bedroom TV to channel 60 (or the channel that is set on the 622), and use your RF remote to control the DVR in the den. You will need to put the 622 in dual-mode for individual watching. If you will only access recordings in the bedroom when the TV in the den is not in use, you can enable shared view on the 622 in single-mode.

2) HD recordings will be downconverted to SD (and should stay 16x9 if desired) for the bedroom TV.

3) You'll need your own antenna, or opt to pay extra for Dish to install an outdoor antenna for you. If you subscribe to locals, I would still use an OTA antenna for the best quality, and this allows you to record up to 3 things at once (2 sat tuners, 1 OTA tuner). Also, having the locals from Dish will allow you to record up to 3 network shows at the same time.

4) Depends on your site. Dish 1000 may be fine, otherwise they may need to run 2 dishes. They should determine this as they do a site survey before getting their equipment out of the truck.

5) Unfortunately, don't expect correct answers from the tech. The installer I had tried to tell me that the guide order cannot be changed from ascending to descending (and vice versa), that the 622 can only record 1 HD and 1 SD and that the 622 cannot record 3 things at once. All of those things can actually be done. :)

You will enjoy your 622 and 211. :)

Yep, 99% of the time I leave my 622 in single mode (with shared view enabled) and at night when the wife and I are in the bedroom, if we want to access a recording I just tune the TV to the appropriate channel and use the 2nd remote. Only time I switch it to dual mode is if we actually want to watch 2 different recordings at the same time, which really doesn't happen all that often. When we're done I switch it back to single mode.

It's also fun to mess with her, in the bedroom while she's watching something and randomly pausing the show or changing the channel. :)

Yes the 622 is a MPEG4 unit. Yes you can record one show in HD while watching another. Actually there are 2 satellite tuners and one OTA tuner so you can record two shows while watching a third if one is OTA. Also there are two outputs for two TVs so you can hook up a second TV to the 622 but the second output is not HD but is for a non-HD set. However as a result you can record 3 shows with the three tuners whild watching two previously recorded shows on the two TVs. I love my 622 by the way. With the 622 Dish Network has a package of 25 national channels; many, but not all, are in full 1080x1920 resolution.

Everything I read here says I should be able to do three things at once. What I tried to do last night is record something on my OTA, something on my Dish locals, and watch TNTHD. It wouldn't let me switch to TNT without cancelling a recording. Just got the DVR on Monday so maybe I'm doing something wrong. It is set to dual mode but no one was using the other television.
One other question is does everyone have cables running to their second tv? My installer cut to the cable line that was running to the tv already and said he was backfeeding that tv before the dvr? Could that be causing my problem?

Assuming that you're trying to watch TNT on TV1 (otherwise switch TV1 and TV2 on what I'm saying next), it must have been that your recording was active on TV1 instead of TV2.
The behavior of the 622 is as follows: when you press the record button to record a program that already started, it should ask you if you want to record it to TV1 or TV2. If you plan to change channel later, you should select TV2 so that TV1 is free to change channels.
Now, if you're trying to schedule a recording of a program that hasn't started, it will be scheduled on the "preferred" tuner as specified under the "User Preferences" menu (TV1 or TV2). Based on what you're saying, perhaps yours is set to TV1. I recommend you to change it to TV2. In that way, TV1 will stay free to watch live (change channels) or record a 2nd show.

BTW, the above only applies if you stay on Dual mode all the time (like me).

Well, i currently have DirecTV, but am thinking of switching to DISH, since they have more

1. Does DirecTV require you to in effect PAY for their HD DVR, like DISH?
2. I have 2 HDTV's, 1 for bedroom, 1 for living room. Can i just get 2 HD tuners from DISH,

3. My older tv is an RCA 38inch HD tube with DirecTV tuner input, and what they call 1 set SYNCROSCAN™ HD component video inputs (Y-Pr-Pb) allows for connection of regular-or progressive-scan DVD players or component-output cable boxes. Does this mean, i can get

The part I can answer is the 622 has will output HDTV to TV1 and SD to TV2. If you want to hook up 2 HDTV's you'll have to buy a second HDTV tuner. If you have HDTV the HD DVR is a MUST. Who wants to watch all your recorded stuff in SD?? Get the 622 or the DirectTV equivalent (I think HR20). I think Direct TV is gonna charge you about the same.

Do you guys know any easy tips on how to boost your Dish signal? I am running around 85 or 86% most of the time. I thought of getting a inline amp but wasn't sure how or if it would help. I have about 50FT of cable to the house and then the coax through the house to the 622.

Buy one on ebay before your 622 comes. They run about $10 shipped, about 4-5 times less than a big box store will fleece you for...

HDMI should work fine, but after reading many of these problems, and laziness on my part because I didn't have an HDMI cable when I upgraded to the 622, I decided to go with component for video, and optical for audio. I have a friend who uses HDMI (but it's only been about two weeks).....

Well, i just ordered a cheap HDMI cable from www.newegg.com, didnt cost much at all.
thanks for the tips. Not sure i'll even go for the HDDVR unit right away, as i dont wanna
pay $200.00 for something i dont own. Might just get 1 HD receiver, and a normal DVR
for the bedroom. Upgrade to the 622 when i can justify the $200.00 cost. Spending a
lot of money on moving at the moment, and just purchased a new tv.

1. Does DirecTV require you to in effect PAY for their HD DVR, like DISH?

There is a way around this with Dish. There is currently a special running for new customers where you get $20 off your bill for 10 months, in effect cancelling out the $200 for the 622. More info HERE (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/programming/dishhd/offer/index.shtml).

Actually, it's also possible for existing customers wishing to upgrade to HD to get a similar deal. It's a bit of work though. Just call and ask for the cancellation department. When you get there they'll ask you why you want to cancel and just tell them (politely!) that you want HD but you don't want to pay $200 and D* ( or Cox, TW, etc.) has a good deal for new customers. They'll probably offer to knock off $50-100 via rebates or lowered bills, but if you are persistent they should give you the $200 in some form of discount. What I got after about 45 minutes on the phone is $100 rebate form and $10 off for 10 months. A couple times I got a little nervous that they were going to call my bluff and just cancel me, but in the end I think they would rather keep your business.

Well, i just got my DISH installed yesterday, and got the DVR unit, and 2 VIP211 units.
I had a question, if anyone can help. This morning while setting up some recordings on
the DVR unit, i noticed that in addition to my normal Las Vegas locals, there were also
channel numbers listed that seemed to be HD feeds of the locals. For instance the CBS
shows came up twice, with the second listing for channel 9031, which i assume is in the
HDTV range. Obviously this channel doesnt show up on the VIP211. Can anyone shed some
live on this?

thanks,

I've had DISH for a long time, with HD and I have two 622's....and I still have not figured out all the channels and mapping. I gave up the OTA channels with my 622's but they should show up as low numbers with a dash and number. Like 004-1 would usually be NBC. My Sat ABC/NBC etc. show up on (about) 6306. I also get SD feeds I think in the 260's range (but could be wrong, I don't ever use them). AND I think there is a set of East coast major network feeds (I'm west coast). So, bottom line, either call DISH - Yuck - or walk the channels and map them on a sheet of paper - watch for time shifts in the shows. You'll probably get it down about the time they come out with a new box. And yes, they do seem to change the mapping depending on the Satellite and various boxes.

Dish transmits their HD locals up in the 600X range here in Los Angeles. However the 622 will also map these channels to their analog OTA assignment as subchannel zero. For example ABC 7 is channel 6000 but also 7.0. OTA ABC channels are 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3.

There is a menu selection where you specify that the channels are to be mapped to subchannel zero and whether to map the HD version or the SD version.

This is my first post on the forum so first, hello and thanks to all of you for the great information that you supply here.

I bought my 60" Sony SXRD last weekend. I already had Dish Network but not HD. Last night they came out and upgraded my service to HDTV. I also got the 622 receiver. So far, so good. They did do the install using the RCA out cables so I'll probably pick up a HDMI cable soon just to experiment. I'm happy with the picture though.

A couple of questions.

When I go to any channel, even one of the HD channels, just after the channel comes in, I have a box that pops up just under the channel number that says "Normal" and then goes away. What does that mean?

The other thing is...and this is not a problem but just mentioning it. My old dish worked fine for SD but it turns out that I have trees in the way for the 129 satellite. He ended up putting up an additional dish and connecting it to my existing one. He changed out the LNB on the old one to update it and then aimed the new one to a 69.5 satellite because of the trees. It seems to work great. Was just wondering if any of you ended up with two dishes?

Again, thanks for all the education that so many of you provide here.

My Penny shows Normal massage whenever I turn the Dish on and change the input on the monitor (to HDMI card) - it indicates screen aspect. I cannot change screen aspect with HDMI on my monitor, I can do it only with Format option on 622 - so you may have something similar.
As far as two dishes that is common if one cannot get good signal at 129 do to location or obstruction.

Have scoured the forums but cant find answer.

I have older Pioneer 503 plasma (inc PDA5002 card) with non HDCP capable DVI input.
If I switch to Dish using VIP622 - can I use its HDMI output (with simple HDMI/DVI connector ) and connect to plasma DVI (non HDCP) input?
Or will my plasma lack of HDCP support render the 622 HDMI output unusable?

Are there any limitations I will face?

Alternately I can use plasma component input - but will I experience any reduction in capabilities? (aside from the debate of HDMI digital vs component video quality :)

My TV does have the HDMI input and I also have the 622 from Dish Network. Before finally picking up a HDMI cable, I did use the component connections. Maybe a very discriminating viewer can see an improvement but I notice no improvement with the HDMI cable. I can't answer your question about the HDMI/DVI connector but I can say that you will probably be very happy with the picture quality with the component connections and I know of no functionality that you would lose.

Am trying to figure out if this is a bug in my box or a known issue. Whats happened about 3 times so far is while 2 things are recording I try to switch tuners and viola I get a blank screen no matter which tuner channel I try to watch and even DVR'd items do Black screen as well sometimes if I can get a dvr item to play and exit to live TV it fixes things. When this happens the recording light stays on and seems to get the entire show even tho I cant view. Powering off/on again has fixed things in the past. Anyway last night had the prob occured so since was recording something I just turned off the TV & went to bed with my fingers crossed. Got up this morning, had the usual Press select screensaver hit select and everything is fine again.

What Im wondering if my box is bad or is this the sort of thing I've heard some ppl have with HDMI or just a known problem. I also haqve had some issues of the "Run Check switch test" poping up. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to call Dish about a replacement if it won't change or fix a prob.

Thx in advance

Hey guys,

The dish tech just came to my house and installed the ViP622 on my Sony KDF50E2000 TV (I just bought the TV as well). The PQ of HD is simply amazing and the SD channels aren't bad either. And I love how I could be simultaneously recording HD Programming while watching HD programming.

But here's one question I have (and I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I can't seem to figure it out). When I hit the Guide button, the TV guide is left aligned. It's flush on the left but there's blank space on the right and bottom. Now, is this normal? I'm thinking it may be because everything else like programming info is dead center, but I want to make sure. I guess I don't like how the Guide is not centered. Let me know if you guys experience this as well. Thanks!

In addition to my question above...the Dish Network Tech told me not to bother with HDMI cables when I asked him about it. He said that component will look just as good and it'll have less problems. He said that the HDMI cables doesn't snap directly into the receiver so it gets loose in a few months. He also mentioned that it can fry the circuit in the receiver and he's been having some trouble calls regarding this issue.

To me, it sounds like BS. But I want to see if there is any validity to this statement.

Thank you!

1. Yes, HDMI 1.3 will, previous versions don't.

2. Yes you can use HDMI for video and Optical for audio, that is how I have my TIVO S3 and Playstation 3 connected to my Sony TV.

3. When playiing Blu-Ray DVDs on my Playstation 3, I can see a very small improvement on video using the HDMI output instead of component. I use an HDMI to DVI cable, because my TV is 3 yrs old and does not have HDMI.

My TV cannot decode 1080p. Its native mode is 720p, so I have the TIVO HD output set to 720p, and the Playstation 3 set to 1080i (playstation will not upconvert 480p nor 720p).

Hope this helps... Macanudo

1. Yes, HDMI 1.3 will, previous versions don't.

Not really true. HDMI 1.3 adds support for TrueHD and DTS-HD, but all the other Dolby formats are supported in all of the HDMI versions. Since there aren't many sources for True HD and DTS-HD yet, HDMI 1.3 really doesn't provide any advantage in the audio realm today (this will change eventually).

There are some documented problems with the HDMI connection not being soldered well enough internally. Cord movement can cause problems. Of course DISH will replace it for free -- but there is the inconvience.

Mine has been hooked up via HDMI for six months without any problem. From what I hear PQ is about the same with either option.

The safe route is the advice your tech gave you. The other route is to try both ways and if HDMI is noticably better to go with HDMI -- just make sure that the cord is not pulled taught or puts stress on the input jack at the back of the 622.

I'm getting the VIP 622 installed this weekend but I'm still a little hazy on how the scenario with the second tv installation will work. Right now I have a leased 811 wired in the basement with one coax from the dish to my HD 811 receiver and I have a very old SD receiver (4900 maybe?) that I own wired by coax from the dish to the family room upstairs. I have three other rooms in the house wired with a coax feed outside to where the dish is but these are currently not connected. My plan is to get a VIP 622 to replace both of the current receivers where I can use two tuners (one Dish, one OTA) for my basement and the other tuner shared throughout the other tvs in the house. Since I currently have a 500 system the CSR said that my dish will need to be replaced as well.

It seems as if they can install the 622 with a seperator in the basement so I can receive both tuners through the one coax. Am I understanding this correctly? But how will I be able to use the "TV2 OUT" on the 622 receiver to see programming off of the second tuner on the other tvs?

Here is where I get more confused:

Will I have to run another coax from the dish to the basement to connect to the "Home Distribution" output on the 622 to obtain connections for the other tvs (which would require a splitter) from the second tuner? On a side note, I'm guessing the "Home Distribution" output is the same as the composite outputs for TV2 but how practical is it to run another composite cable from the 622 to another tv in the house, in another room, possible on another floor? Maybe I'm not understanding it correctly.

I'm hoping I don't have to run another coax from the dish to the basement because I'm afraid the installer wouldn't want to run it through the wall like the current one is and would try to go around the house on the outside and drill another hole in the house, which I REALLY want to avoid.

From my existing setup (5 rooms all homerun with coax to the existing dish location outside), does what I want to do seem logical without having to run additional cables?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I just want to make sure to know what to look for and expect when the installer is here this weekend. I tried to find a setup from Dish Network's site but I couldn't find anything applicable to my situation.

Just an update I watched the DISH Tech Chat this week, and they are rolling out a firmware upgrade 4.01 to all subscribers who have the VIP622 by March 1st and they said that Dolby Digital 5.1 will be enabled through HDMI with that release.

They also mentioned that the HDMI connector inside the box is built to the HDMI spec however many of the connectors insdie the box are breaking, so DISH has redesigned it connector to their specs and said the new design will not break, no word on when they would start manufacturing VIP622 with the new connector, they might be already but they didn't say when. on the Chat.

recess,

While I don't have the 622, I do have the 222, which is an HD and SD dual tuner receiver. The only difference between the 622 and the 222, I believe, is the DVR in the 622.

The coax from the dish comes into the receiver from the dish via a switch that combines the feeds of the various satellites, in my case, the 110, 119, and 129 satellites. The receiver's HD out will go to the TV that is currently connected to your 811 receiver. The second feed, which is SD, needs to have a cable run from the 622 receiver to the second TV. In your case, you could run this cable back to the switch, install a 4 way splitter, and connect the cables to the existing TV upstairs and the cables that go to the other 3 TV's since they all are apparently located at the switch.

I've never heard of anyone splitting this SD feed 4 ways. You may have a signal strength issue because of the signal loss caused by the splitter. I'd also be surprised if your installer is willing to do this. I'm sure E* would rather have you connect additional receivers than have 4 TV's run off of one feed ($$$$$).

Good luck.

I have my second DISH feed going to my media closet (where everything is homerun like yours). My feed goes into a video distribution/splitter hub. I then run 4-5 additional TV's off of this video distribution splitter. ON mine I have it set so that it broadcasts the DISH signal on channel 55 of all the tv's hooked to this dsitribution splitter.

I have no problems with signal loss, although the distribution splitter has built in amplification for a couple of the longer runs.

Since the 622 works on UHF remotes I bought extra UHF 622 remotes on ebay
for $12-$15 each. The remotes work from any room in the home to change channels, use the PVR etc.

The only downside is that ALL of these secondary TV's that are hooked to the splitter must share the one signal that is sent to the splitter. Obviously, the main TV can still work independently.

Works great for us, and DISH does not even charge a second TV fee with the 66's second tuner. So I am running 5-6 TV's with no upcharge at all.

I'm looking to have a similar setup but would have the TV2 coax feed to the splitter outside by the dish (where the homerun is) and then off to two different tvs in the house (main and bedroom). I'm hoping there isn't any signal loss since this will be just a normal splitter but I think I will be ok, if not I will just get one like yours. We only use the bedroom tv right before bed so I think it will work out with just the one Dual Tuner Receiver pretty well.

I'm pretty stoked. Before I had the 811 and an older model SD receiver and was paying for AT200 with $10 HD and locals (OTA HD locals) for about $63. Now I get the Dual Tuner VIP622 w/ HDDVR and AT200 with the extra HD channels and HD locals included for around $70.

I might an extra remote for the bedroom tv, though this tv is two floors up from the basement where the tuner is so I hope I don't have any problems with the remote's signal.

There shouldn't be any need to run an additional wire back to where you have the home runs. What you can use is a pair of diplexers. What they do is allow you to use the one existing coax to carry both the signal from the Dish and the tuner 2 output to your other tvs.

As for multiple tvs on a splitter being forced to all share tuner 2, the 622 has an option to send the output of both tuner 2 and tuner 1 out on the home distribution/tuner 2 output. This is handy if no one is watching tuner 1 in the main location, but 2 different people would like to watch different programs in a couple of bedrooms. The 622 comes with this option in the "off" mode. To turn it "on", press menu, 6,1,5, then scroll left and select either cable or air under the Tv 1 output. Click on "done" and now you'll have the option of both tuners on all tvs.

"I've never heard of anyone splitting this SD feed 4 ways. "

Now that's funny. :D

I might an extra remote for the bedroom tv, though this tv is two floors up from the basement where the tuner is so I hope I don't have any problems with the remote's signal.

My old UHF remotes from dish (for the PVR 501/508) had some range issues. The UHF "pro" remotes that work with the 622 have much better range. My bedroom is one floor up and 50 feet away from where the 622 sits in a well ventilated cabniet, and the UHF remote response has been 100% and immediate.

The thing with the remote range is to change batteries frequently, don't wait until the "battery low" warning

Thanks for all the help, guys. I'm pretty much set up. I had some reception issues on the second tv (grainy picture) but after remodulating with different channels a few times, it looks much better. I might try a little bit more to get a better picture but I'm finally happy with what I have for now.

I was having trouble with the range of the remote on the second tv(uhf), but was able to do the 'splitter trick' and have a set of rabbit ears on the other end of the splitter going into the tv and it now works better.

I'm now looking at getting another remote for the third tv (I have my uhf tuner split across two tvs) off of ebay but wanted to make sure I am getting the correct one. The second remote that I have currently for the tuner is a 6.0 IR/UHF Pro but I would only need a UHF Pro, right? All of the remotes with both IR & UHF cost more so I wanted to go the cheapie route? Are there any models that I need to look for (stay away from)?

Couple more questions, too. Is there an easy way to select which tuner will record on the DVR without having to go to the setup menu and switching the preferred recording tuner everytime you need to switch?

And if I am in dual mode and lets say a program is recording on tuner 1 (which I have set to TV1), is there a way I can easily switch to view the second tuner on TV1 without disturbing the recording? Thanks again for the help.

thanks, that is good news! hey walter, your private box is full! here is my message to you:
Walter, they are coming to install tomorrow in the afternoon, can i just give them this number or must you email me an image of the card or must you mail me an actual card or something? also i am not taking the 18 month commitment, so that's why i have to pay the $49 activation fee... Will the card number suffice?

They are saying i need to present the card at installation. Should I reschedule? Can you mail me a card?

Hello all,
I waited to get my 622 until Feb 1 to get the new free HDDVR promo I had to call them to get this option it was unavailable on the web site ordering page. With the free HDDVR upgrade, $200.00 credit and more HD channels it was a great time to switch from DTV to feed my new JVC HD-P61R1U I bought for my Housewarming/Christmas present for myself. System was installed Feb 10th Installer set everything up and activated system with what seemed to be no problems. We had a major snow storm 4 days later so I was a bit busy to figure the whole set out but when I started flipping through channels it turns out that over 40 of my subscribed channels were not working, they were telling me I had to call D and subscribe. I called D and verified the correct package was set up which it was and then was transferred to tech support. After two different calls and a walk through both times it appears my 622 will not update from the Sat feed. All switches and Sat feeds are good but it appears after their initial software update on install day the system has never again successfully been able to update itself. I have a new box in hand from their advance replacement program to install today. Has anyone else heard of this problem? Also other than having a pocket dish is there any way to download the programs I have recorded to the receiver before I ship it back?
I hope they do not try to say this was my fault in any way, I am a bit leery of the statement on the exchange unit that if they determine the problem is in any way my fault they will charge me but with no reference to how much or how they determine if it was my fault or the installers fault or just a bad unit.

New (re manufactured) 622 installed and activated with no problems. Looks like all channels are showing ok. I think the original one was ok after all, it seems the 2 Techs I spoke to originally never asked the right questions when I was having the problems. It seems the stations I was trying to tune in to were the backup locations for the satellite feeds not the primary feed so they would not show up. Now I can either keep the replacement receiver or send it back and reactivate my original set they said they don't care as long as they get one back. Any disadvantage keeping the reman unit 05/06j build vs 06/06k build of my original unit?

I've got a couple of newbie 622 questions. I read earlier that new firmware will allow Dolby Digital to be passed over HDMI. If it currently can't be passed, what does setting the external decoder to Dolby Digital only or Dolby Digital/PCM or PCM do? The same for Line vs. RF? I get audio with any combination that I try. RF plays louder than line mode, but other than that, I can't tell any difference. I assume that once DD is enabled, the source is DD, and I have the external decoder set to DD, that my receiver will detect a DD signal. All I ever see now is PCM.

How can you tell if you have the new firmware to pass DD? I think the other poster mentioned version 4.01 after 3/1. I would guess that everyone should have this downloaded by now. My software version is L366. What does that translate to?

Thanks,
Kevin

New software version will show up as L401, as of a couple days ago I still had the old software also.

Not sure about your audio questions. I use the optical out to my receiver and while it sounds great I'm not sure about the particulars between DD/5.1/PCM, perhaps someone else can jump in here!

I know very recently they began to shore up the way the HDMI is attached to the internal board, it was pretty shoddy before. I dont think either the 05/06 or 06/06 ones had this upgrade. I would think that they are very similar builds.

I have an 811 right now and I am considering upgrading. I had a couple of questions.

1. Do you get charged for two receivers instead of one since this has two tuners in it?
2. Do you have to still pay a stupid fee to use the DVR?
3. If I don't subscribe to the locals and I get them on an OTA antenna can I still record them with the DVR?

Thanks!

Calvinlc,

1. If connected to a phone line, only one $6 per month receiver fee.
2. Yes, $5.98 per month.
3. Yes, but without the guide data, you must manually program the OTA recording, just like the old days of a VCR.

The 622 is 100 times better than the 811. I liked the 811 and was fairly satisfied with its quirks, but the 622 is awesome. No reboots when tuning to a local channel, better local channel reception, better guide and better interface.

My thoughts, for what they are worth.

So if the 622 is my only receiver, do I need to pay a fee at all? If I only have one receiver I know that used to be free...at least that's the way it is with my present contract, and it is only 5.00 per month on my bill. Thanks!

Calvinlc,

I believe that as your only receiver the fee is included in your subscription. You may want to confirm that with Dish, though.

I own a 942, lease a 622 and an 811, so I pay 2 additional receiver fees (622, 811) and 2 DVR fees (622 and 942), plus the $20 HD fee. I kept my leased 811 when I upgraded because I can now watch the extra (HD) channels on the SD TV in the guest bedroom. Neither the 942 or 811 receive the MPEG4 channels, but neither would a 625 or 301 (311), and since I already pay the $20 HD fee, might as well watch as much of it as I can.

Thanks Miner. So what is the difference between buying and "leasing" the 622? The darn dish people's billing practices are getting as complicated as the IRS :) I looked at there comparison chart with DirectTV and Cable and they have all these green "Free" items on there, like a DVR for instance, which I know darn good and well they aren't.

Calvin,

I've been with Dish forever and the only reason I own my 942 is I got it cheap. For the 622, buying it outright costs around $450, vice $150 to lease. You pay an extra receiver fee if you own it, a lease fee if you lease. The amount is the same, either way. If you decide to leave Dish, you give back the equip if it is leased; or you sell it to someone if you bought it. I believe that from an accounting perspective Dish has more "assets" by leasing the equipment than by selling it. Nothing is free as you point out. It may be included in the monthly cost, but it isn't free.

Hi guys, still haven't quite figured this out. In single mode is there an easy way to select which tuner will record on the DVR without having to go to the setup menu and switching the 'preferred recording tuner' every time you need to switch to the second tuner to record? (since Tuner 1 is my preferred tuner)

Also, I have set up Dish Pass to record new episodes of Las Vegas, but right now it is recording the SD ones on TNT. Can I set it up to record in HD when available without having to manually change it everytime in the DVR schedule menu. Right now it is automatically skipping the HD one on TNTHD and recording the SD one on TNT. Thanks again.

Don't use Dish Pass. Instead, simply set-up a recurrent recording event on TNT_HD.

I know that the new software upgrade (L401 or something like that) was supposed to give the option of only recording events in HD or SD. If that isnt an option yet when you set your dish pass recordings it should soon be. They mentioned the upgrade on the Tech Chat about a month ago.

Here is my only complaint that I have not figured out a way around yet...

When you select an event to record the default option is "all episodes" of the event. Since I really don't want to record every single Seinfeld, Friends, and Dora the explorer I NEVER pick that option. I cant imagine many folks ever select that option either -- since you'd only have to do it once.

The maddening thing is if you accidently click "select" when it is on this option it may set you up to record 57 episodes of Friends in the next 10 days. Better catch that mistake or prepare for a lot of Rachael and Monica (which ain't all bad)....

Instead I almost always pick "Once", which is a four button clicks away.

Logic would say that those that select "All Episodes" or "New Episodes" would select that option MUCH LESS frequently than those picking "Once."

Is there any way to make the "Record Single Episode" the default option -- since it is what I pick 90% of the time? I can't believe that DISH didn't figure out in user tests that this option is the most logical default position.

Has anyone figured out a work around to this dilema? Is this hot air and do you like it the way it is, or have you thought the same thing?

Hello all.

I am new to this satellite thing so bear with me please.

My analog(channels 2-71) cable bill, via the lovely TWC, has just shot past $53/month. I think it has gotten out of control.

Anyway, this brings me to DISH and the DVR advantage they are now offering.

I know they are currently offering a $10/month off for 10 months(I am assumming this requires either a 18 month or 2 year commitment to them), and this ViP622 has me interested, but I am a little lost as too some details.

It seems that the ViP622 can be connected to two different tv's(it would be this way for me. 1 HDTV, and the 2nd TV will be a regular TV), but I am wondering:

1. You can watch 2 separate things on either TV? Also, this would include recorded material? Say one person is watching something they recorded, and the other is watching something else. How is this done without another Box on the other tv?

2. If another box is not needed, how STRONG is that UHF remote? The two tv's in question are on the same floor, separated by walls, and about(overestimating here by the way) 50-60ft apart. Will there be a mjor problem with changing channels on the4 UHF remote? Do I have to "point" towards where the room is to change channels?

3. No HD(only over OTA through the ATSC) through DISH. I will only be subbing to either their Top 100, Top100 PLUS, or their Top 200 only. Again no locals. Their is no RESTRICTION to where I HAVE TOO subscribe to the HD channels to get the DVR is there?

4. This is where I am really lost. Since the ViP622 will be connected to the same LANDLINE phone as the second TV(if that is even connected), I thought I read that they WAIVE the $5.00/month fee on the second TV. Is this true or not? I know that you are charged $6.00/month for the DVR use, but do they charge you the 2nd TV? Also do they charge you a $5.00/month charge for the lease of the ViP622(unless you BUY it)?

I am trying to REALLY reduce costs here(I know, I can just go OTA, which is free, and that will REALLY cut costs).

I am NOT all that interested in their HD offerings right now, but maybe in the future. I want the ViP622 for the DVR/OTA ATSC capability/2 room viewing.

I won't subscribe to the locals(just use the antenna). And how is the ViP622 "strength" in receiving and holding channels via an antenna? I have an LG LST-4200A which has been GREAT at receiving channels at close to 50 miles away with an indoor(amped) RCA antenna. That little unit has been wonderful. Can I expect the same type of results with the ViP622?

I know that will be tought to gauge unless you have both to compare. But just some insight would be nice.

Like I said I am trying CUT DOWN on a $53/month cable bill. I know that does not sound like much, but it seems DISH may be the answer.

Thanx in advance

P.S. I have a 3rd TV that is a regular TV. Is DISH good about waiving that $5.00/month mirroring fee if I bitch enough(and is connected to the same landline based phone)? I really do hate paying for that stupid fee on a 3rd TV. Always hated that you paid a fee beyond the first.

How many people have 1 TV anymore? Not many, I can assure you. At least make it 2 TV's DISH. Most people probably have 3 or more. Oh well

Rick_R

1. The 622 can record 3 programs (2 satellite and one OTA) plus both TVs can watch 2 separate previously recorded programs all simultaneously. Or each TV can watch a live program instead of using that tuner for recording.

2. The UHF remote is strong enough to be used anywhere in the house. Mine in on the same floor 3 rooms away.

3. I believe their deal on the 622 requires subscribing th the $20 HD package for 18 months.

4. The phone line is connected to the 622. There is no phone connection to the 2nd TV. There is no $5 charge for the 2nd TV. Only the $6 DVR charge. The way I look at it since I am saving $5 for the second TV the DVR is only costing you $1. If you have a 3rd TV the extra STB charge is $6 if one is a 622 so actually there is an extra $1 charge there.

PS answer. No the will not waive it. It actually goes to $6 as I stated above.

If you decide on the 622 you will enjoy it. I do.

I love my 622. The remote works upstairs in my bedroom flawlessly. I have heard stories of neighbors accidentally changing your channel because they are on the same frequency (don't worry these can be changed to correct that if it happens).

I have 2 receivers in my house, 1 VIP622, and another standard def. I have 4 tv's in 4 separate rooms on 4 different remotes. Works great, still trips me out.

Good luck.

I mean it was a smaller box within my 57" screen. Weird. How can get all of my HD channels to show in 16:9 or is that possible? I have tried switching my 622 HDTV output mode to 16:9, 4:3 #1 and 4:3 #2 all without my desired result.

Remember that just because your watching an HD channel doesn't mean your getting HD programming. Your locals are a prime example. Locals only deliver HD content during its "primetime" schedule. From morning to late afternoon its mostly SD content. Make sure your HD channels aspect ratio is set to "normal" using the 622's remote star button on the bottom left. If you see black bars on the sides while watching HD channels, then most likely the program is SD.

Well, when I was doing my research, I came across this article on Crutchfield.com:

Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-HouSQaJcYpt/learningcenter/home/aspect_ratio.html)

which states that:

"16:9 program sources:The official aspect ratio for all HDTV programming is 16:9. That's the case whether you receive your HDTV signals via local over-the-air broadcasts, digital cable service, or satellite TV. "

So I just assumed that all HD programming was sent in 16:9. However, I am no expert, just wondering.

holl_ands
04-07-07, 06:15 PM
The aspect ratio for low rez (480p) DVD's is also 16:9.

So when an HD channel is simply playing back a DVD, 480p is upconverted to 720p or 1080i.

Also, many older cameras recorded in less than 720p.....
So while technically it might not always be "HDTV", it is "DTV".

And of course, a HD station can also upconvert a 4:3 low-rez program (aka "SD") and tack on some "pillar bars" along the sides----

They might even put big "HD" logos in the pillar boxes, which means that this is an HD channel, but they were too cheap
to actually use HD cameras and associated production equipment....hence LOGO should read "NOT HD".

Theoretically, they could broadcast a hi-rez 4:3 program within the pillar boxes, but I've never seen it
happen in over 3 years of watching....yes, I can usually tell the difference between 720p and good 1080i.

Nope, DVD is 4:3 and 480i. Now anamorphic DVDs can fill a 16:9 TV using full mode or stretch mode to stretch the image without distortion. But that depends on the aspect ratio of the original movie as well.

There a re a few movies that were filmed in 4x3 and when these are transferred to HD it results in 4x3 HD. I believe Disney's Lady and the Tramp is one of those. I have seen a few B&W 4x3 movies on the Voom FILM channel also which I assumed was also HD filmed in 4x3.

However aside from these few clasic movie situations I do not believe there is anything being made in 4x3 HD.

I am considering the Dish given that it seems to have the most HD content available anywhere.

I just have 2 questions prior to signing up for service that maybe someone here can help me answer.

First, I dont have a land line phone, only a cell phone. Do I need to have a land line for the service to work? And if not do I get charged extra? I really dont want to get a land if I dont have to.

Second, is there any way to pass the HD signal in its native format directly to the TV via HDMI? I currenly have an Olevia 747i that has its own internal scaler/upconverter that is far superior to anything the set top box has to offer. I'd like to have the TV convert all content to the TV's native 1080p resolution.

thanks.

They charge $5 a month per receiver if no land line. Don't get one it isn't worth it if you have to pay a technician to come out then consider the monthly bill to maintain the phone service (30+ a month). Would not make sense to pay 30 + a month to save 5 dollars a month you know?

Previous post is correct, $5 if no land line.

As far as output resolution, there is no native passthrough so you'll have to set it to 720p or 1080i.

I read earlier in the post that there was some talk of native passthrough. any idea of when this might become available. And if so would it be a firmware update or would it require a new STB?

No idea when it will be available, but it should be able to be added via the normal firmware updates.

Read and searched and did not notice the answer to this on the thread. Does the VIP622 support and External SATA Drive? I currently have TWC and with the switch to Comcast, things are looking bad. but I love having extra HD recordable space. If not, what are my options?

Any comments?

Thanks

Nope, not at this time. But it is said to be coming, but has been coming for about a year now.

Thanks :( Just like buying a TV, you have to find the things that you are willing to give up for something better, and vice versa.

Any other external strorage options or ways to parallel or upgrade the unit?

None that I am aware of. About the only option to get content off the box is use the s-video and feed a DVD recorder. Fine for SD but doesn't do anything for HD.

Yea, such a deal breaker when i keep 5 episodes of kids shows for the daughter and a few movies, along with shows that I may not be able to watch in a week. What a shame....I have heard that Dish is HD lite from some. What is your personal experience?

Yes, technically Dish is HD-Lite but I switched to Dish about 6 months ago because I felt there was no way it could be as bad as the bit-starved garbage I was getting from Charter. And I was right. So for me Dish is better than my local cable provider currently. But I did have Charter when they first started with HD and had only a few channels and they were fantastic. So I do know what I'm missing but for now all I can do is choose the lesser of two evils. And I prefer the 622 over the Moxi from Charter.

What exactly is HD Lite, what a picture from an upconverting DVD player shows, not as crisp?

One last question. I noticed the VIP622 has an input for an external HD antenna. Can it record this input?

primetimeguy
04-11-07, 11:03 AM
Yes, it has one over-the-air tuner so if you connect the antenna you will pick up your local channels and would then be able to record 3 programs at once (1 OTA and 2 sat).

How is the OTA picture quality? Is it much better than the HD from the Satellite?

I am thinking of switching from comcast to Dish. Worried about HD-lite.

I do see a slight improvement using OTA locals as compared to Dish locals (MPEG4). But for the most part this is only noticed on sporting events. For typical TV programs it is pretty tough to see any diference. This is on a 57" screen at 10ft away.

Also, does dish install the OTA antenna free upon request, or one has to pay for it? In my area they don't carry the PBS in HD locals. I would like to get that channel in HD if possible.

100% in agreement. Been there, done that, and moved back to cable (Fios), and IMO, the picture quality between Fios and HD Lite is like night and day.

Problems we are running into is this.

Comcast downgrading their HD lineup in Houston area without mention of new programing.

Uverse can only do one HD feed at a time.

FIOS not available.

What's a boy to do? :(

The reasons for switch are:
Comcast prices are crazy. I pay almost $100
DVR is unusable
FIOS not available in my area.

Call me stupid... but can someone give me a quick explaination of what FIOS is?

We have been very happy with the DISH HDTV feed (combined with our OTA feed) and love the 622 interface and ease of use.

Dish 622 Question:

I am thinking of switching to Dish, and getting thier Dish 622 HD DVR. I have 3 televisions. One in the basement (HDTV), one in the bedroom (Analog), and one in the living room (HDTV). I want to use that one box for all the televisions.

I plan on connecting the living room tv with component cables for video and stereo analog cables for sound. I plan on connecting the basement tv with HDMI for video and audio. And I plan on using the RF capabilities for the bedroom television.

Is this feasible? I know all the outputs are active on the 622, but could it work? How does it make the connection w/the bedroom tv?

The 622 can output one HDTV feed and one analog feed. I send my analog feed to a video distribution splitter and run it to 5 TV's, all sharing that second feed. I dont think you can hook all three up directly out of the 622. I'm not up on HDTV splitters, and not sure if is possible to split the HDTV feed without losing quality.

Sounds like in your set up you'd need a second HDTV box from DISH.

#1, you can not yet hook up an external drive via USB. I know they have been talking about the capability on DISH's tech chat -- but there is no promised launch date.

#2 I like my "HD Light" just fine, no issues here. Granted my only comparison is what I pull in via my OTA direct from the networks. I've never had cable or Direct TV to compare this to. I watch this on a 55" 1080i/720p plasma from about 14'. If you get real close you can see artifacts on either feed.
It seems that from reading different forums that Direct has the most HD light type complaints and cable certainly has its share of detractors too.
I dont really notice any difference between my OTA HD feed and the DISH HDTV networks. I know things like the RAVE channel, HDTV PPV movies, etc from the DISH feed look downright stunning.
The only time that the HDTV feed looks a bit cheapened is on the old movies that they've upconverted to show on HDTV -- on the many movie channels (Horror, Kung Fu, HDNet, HDMovies, etc.)

Yes, all video/audio outputs are live at the same time so this can be done.

I just had Dish with ViP622 installed. Very solid box, great picture with my Vizio 42" plasma.

I have a question regrading scheduling recordings. I have set my box as Dual Mode. The other TV is a old CRT SDTV. When I schedule a recording from TV1 does it always use tuner1 for recording? I saw some posts mentioning that there is some user setting to select "prefered tuner". Is this preferred tuner for viewing or recording? Is there any way to set TV2 dvr recordings on TV1.

Finally, selecting does selecting single mode solve all these issues? I rarely use the other TV.

primetimeguy
04-30-07, 08:02 PM
For yoiur default recordings you are looking for the Record Plus option which can be found under preferences. Enable it and set it to TV2. This when you have something scheduled to record it will default to TV2 and still allow you to view another program on TV1.

In Single mode Record Plus is disabled since both tuners are being used for TV1. You can still turn on shared view which will show the same program on TV1 and TV2.
