View Full Version : 149" Gemmy inflatable outdoor movie screen
Clarence 09-18-06, 08:52 AM This screen has been mentioned a couple of times in previous threads, but I thought I'd start a dedicated thread in this new dedicated sub-forum.

I ordered one on e-bay last week for $159 and it actually suprised me as being better quality than I expected. Nice design, well-constructed, even well-boxed.
Easy setup and the fans inflated the screen quickly and held it up just fine... the 2 fans were about as loud as I expected. Louder than a computer fan, not as loud as a hairdryer... about as loud as a bathroom fan. Nothing you'd want in an indoor HT, but outside, from 10' away, the fan noise was lost in the ambience.
But overall, I don't think it's large enough. Our neighboorhood outdoor movies tend to have a large crowd. And the JVC D-ILA G15 that I'm using outdoors has plenty of lumens to throw a bright 16'-20' image. This screen is fine for 6-8 people, but it's really not much larger than my indoor screen.
I think I'm going to build something about 16'x9'. Maybe even 18' to 20'.
But if you've seen this and wondered if it was worth trying, I'd say yes... especially if you don't want a huge screen, or if your projector can't do much larger than a 10' screen anyways.
ricwhite 09-18-06, 07:14 PM VERY tempting at less than $200.
mheadroom 09-18-06, 11:05 PM Pull the trigger. As Clarence said the build quality is surprisingly good.
I bout one on ebay for $184 shipped and I couldn't be happier. It fits perfect in our back yard. I had a group of 20 or so and everyone loved it.
rboster 09-19-06, 03:01 PM Another high marks for the gemmy screen. It held it's own with gusts of up to 35 mph here in KC last Saturday night. This is one of the best investments for our HT....the WOW factor of the screen and just the outdoor setting is really such a great idea. We showed The Wild, which sucked...but ppl from 1 to 78 really loved the experience. The most common question was where we rented the screen.
This is my outdoor screen of choice! ;)
tiger bait 09-22-06, 09:52 AM I got one at a local Walmart for $199 and used just the screen material hung by hooks inside my theater until I got my permanent 165" installed. My installers came in when it was still hanging and commented positively on the quality of the screen material. When the mosquitos die down and it cools off some, I will inflate the support and try it outside. After hanging for weeks, mine still had fold lines in it. Did any of you do anything to smooth those out, or will the inflated support take care of that for me.
bryanmaple 10-07-06, 07:31 PM I've been looking through information available online about this screen, but I haven't found the answer to my primary question. Is this screen only for front projection, or can it be used for rear projection as well?? I am very interested in purchasing this type of screen, bt I would prefer to use it for rear projection rather than front projection. I'm not crazy about the idea of having my $1000.00 projector out where kids are running around. At least with the projector behind the screen, I can rope off the area for a little more protection.
Any advice is welcome.
Thanks,
mheadroom 10-07-06, 10:36 PM Yes it is only front projection. The screen amaterial is like a heavey blackout cloth.
I guess you could create a smaller screen using an PR surface and shoot though the center but the open area in the center is quite a bit smaller.
Hello. I'm new here. I just recently purchased a Gemmy, and tried it out yesterday. I was impressed with it, to say the least, especially with the quickness of setup.(It took me 15 minutes to setup by myself on a windy day. Not smart because my Gemmy went airborn before I could secure it. All worked out in the end.) I also have a Optoma DV 10 projector, which sets uo in about 30 seconds, a minute if I take my time. I like to set up quick and be ready to roll. I had a portable Dalite tripod screen which I used to show movies in the past to family and friends (70x70, about 15-25 people). With the Gemmy, I feel I could cover small audiences up to 50-60 comfortably. Great screen for the price. I love it.
incarceration 11-03-06, 07:33 PM i'd like to have that for CS:S outside lol
rboster 11-07-06, 08:14 PM We've had two get togethers with groups of 45 and over 60...the screen is plenty big for large groups to have a good slight line. My goal is to cook and entertain a group of 100. I used to grill burgers etc and for my office of 90 plus on my trusty grill...so I know I can feed a group that size...and the screen is big enough for that number too.
I'm not even sure I know that many people, well, not well enough to invite over anyway.
rboster 11-10-06, 10:35 AM I'm not even sure I know that many people, well, not well enough to invite over anyway.
The first group consisted of neighbors, friends and family....many have school age kids...so it adds up. We had as young as one and as old at 79. I held this event to work through the kinks before having a party for my son's class.
The second group was my son's 2nd grade class and their families (parents and sibs), plus some from his grade's football team and their families. We held that party because we are fairly new to that school. My son's Birthday is near Christmas, so he get cheated out of B-day parties. We figured this was a way for him to have a get together and for us to meet the parents and get to know more of the families from his school. The great thing about an outdoor event is you have a ton of ppl, you don't have to worry about accomodating a wrangling a large group in a house. We have an screened porch that runs along side the drive way..so we have the buffet line in there. We have a rear access to our back hall way, which is 6 ft from a bathroom...so it's a great set up.
Since then we have agreed to host a youth church event and a second class party in the spring. It is one of the best social/family investments we have made...besides our home theater room.
Ron
WhAtIsMoUsE 11-24-06, 12:30 AM sorry to rob your thread, but how does rear projection work? your talking about using a projector behind the screen somehow?
BuffaloJim 11-25-06, 05:51 PM Regarding rear projection...
Yes, the projector projects the picture onto the back of a screen which allows the picture to come through. The only thing I've used for rear projection is a bed sheet. It works, but it's far less than ideal.
Jim
WhAtIsMoUsE 11-25-06, 07:21 PM is the picture reverse? what are the advantages anyways?
mheadroom 11-25-06, 07:46 PM Generally RP allows for a brighter picture because you're are looking at transmitted lighted vs reflected light.
But the major advantage for an outdoor theater would be that the projector can be placed behind the screen and away from people. This helps protect the projector and don't worry about people walking between the beam and screen.
gadgetguru1 11-27-06, 04:17 PM Is this the one that has a blower going all the time to keep it inflated? If so, the one I saw was so noisy I couldn't even hear the movie....My neighbor has one that you just inflate and it stands up with no blower...He got it at Best Buy or Costco...or one of those big chains - it cost more than $200, but it's great and QUIET.
mheadroom 12-02-06, 09:28 PM yes this has the blower but I think the sound isn't that bad. I forgot all about it once the movie starts and our attendees said they didn't even notice.
Thegemmy does make some noise, but it blends into the background doing movietime.
I still love my gemmy. I try to use it mainly outside. I have used it inside once in a gym. It was a little loud, but the audience didn't seem to mind. They were too busy saying "Wow!" about the screen.
Yeah I think as long as you have something interesting on for them they won't hardly notice the fans...
Big E 46 01-24-07, 09:10 AM I just got my screen last night ($200 from Wal-Mart online) couldn’t wait to get it set up so I set it up in the living room (it barley fit) has anyone figured out how to get the wrinkles out of the screen? I left it set up for a few hours but they never got any better. I was thinking of using an iron or something. Any Ideas?
I was going to try to iron my Gemmy screen also. I might put a towel over it before I iron it, just to make sure I don't burn it. Then again, I may use my steamer on it , and see how that works.
Big E 46 01-24-07, 08:53 PM please let me know if the steamer works. I am sure that i could just set it up during a Texas summer day and it would be wrinkle free but I cant wait until then.
kendallizm 02-23-07, 04:46 AM I love this thing it's great, my kids think it's the coolest thing in the world! easy set up and break down too.
I know there is another thread on this screen namely: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=728473
This one has more posters so here it goes .......
Has anyone in Canada been able to get this screen? Here is what I tried today:
Called Gemmy up - right now they only distribute to WalMart (USA) even though if you google: **************.com show that they carry this but it is out of stock
Called up **************.com - website says they only ship in the USA. The person on the phone says they expect shipment of these screens in June / July and they may ship to Canada. Asked me to check back every few weeks.
Called up Walmart Canada and stated that this item is available on Walmart.com and in their stores but not available at Walmart.ca or in Canadian stores. She advised me that Walmart uses different distributors for Canada and the US and the only way I could get this was to go on Walmart.com, use a US address and a US based credit card (both of which I don't have). I maybe heading down to Orlando in late April for a conference so if the timing is right I may have to check out some Walmarts in the area. I would have the screen delivered to the hotel but I don't have a US Credit Card to order it.
Tried ebay as well. They have one seller that has it for $250 USD through a buy now. Might get desperate and try this route. BTW - do a search on "inflatable screens" on ebay - some really crazy and expensive stuff.
Do you folks have any suggestions?
Just got mine today from Walmart. Gonna be in the 80's during the day and mid 60's at night this weekend. Might be time to test it out !!!!!!

Suzook,
I'll be in Orlando in late April so I sent you a PM <hint hint> ;)
Tony Williams 03-29-07, 02:17 PM Who said portable TV's had to be <14"? :D
I can't seem to find these Gemmy screens in stock anywhere. Not even listed on the Walmart website anymore. Anyone seen it anywhere?
mheadroom 04-05-07, 04:51 PM may be a seasonal item.
victor-eyd 04-05-07, 08:42 PM gemmy's product partner website says late June.
Victor
dcshobby 04-07-07, 09:47 PM I ordered mine 3 months ago on HSN for $185 minus a $15 coupon that can be found on google.
I just checked and it is still in stock. Just search inflatable screen and it will show up.
Here is the latest on my scenario trying to get this screen into Canada. I tried HSN's website - nothing for Canada. I googled to see if there was HSN site for Canada > nada. Called the 1-800 # and it is not available in Canada. Went back to Gemmy's site and they have three "retailers" listed: Walmart, SkyMall and some "Improvements Place" (couldn't read it as the graphics were so small). Went to SkyMall.com and they had the screen for $254 but they have a price match guarantee. I called them up and in the VRU phone tree there was an option for non- USA delivery locations (getting warmer) when I talked to the rep she was putting the order in and then found out that this item does not ship to Canada <DOH>. I called back today and am having the screen shipped to the hotel in Orlando that I will be staying at the end of April. The screen is in stock according to skymall and will take 14 days to arrive. The way the price match works is that I need to buy it a full pop and then I have to email / fax them the proof of the lower costs. We'll see.
taz291819 04-12-07, 04:58 PM We're building a pool in a few months, and this is just what the doctor ordered. Now I need to get a projector....
Clarence,
My gemmy should be waiting for me at my hotel in Orlando. I'll call to verify when I get back to the office. I paid a little bit more than the walmart price but I got desperate. If all goes well, I will use SkyMall's price protection so I will ultimately pay the same price.
I got my gemmy screen at the end of March and finally had a warm day to try it out. We watched "Finding Nemo", just the two of us, (no time to really post invites and really wanted a dry run anyway...)
I was hoping someone had posted in here how the "ironing" went with this screen. I had the screen up for 6 hours or so before we started the movie and the fold marks were still annoying to me, (and me alone). Can this thing be ironed? After doing that, I would look at rolling it up instead of folding it. It will take up more room but I know the picture will be fantastic!
Got my gemmy last week, but I haven't even opened the box yet.
I am still trying to figure out what projector to get that will have enough lumens/brightness for outdoor viewing.
what is everyone using?
I'm going to be using mine with an HD70. I hope it's bright enough.
I too am having a heck of a time finding one of these things. I want one for the NHL games this weekend.
I finally was able to get mine through HSN.com and they had the best price, they have them in stock. I just set it up and it looks great and was so simple to setup.
Anyone have any luck with the folds in the screen yet?
Considering one of these down the road, but those folds and wrinkles in the screen would
be a deal breaker.

I just got my projector the other day so I still havent used my screen. But I would say leaving it out in the sun on to warm up while laying flat would help. I would be afraid to iron them out, but I bet you could do that too with some kind of cloth as a buffer, but be careful.
I plan on the first option on the next sunny warm day. Then once the wrinkles are gone, I will roll up the screen and store it seperataly to there are not wrinkles to worry about.
I thought initially that should be all that was needed, but like Judy said... 6 hours in the
Texas sun and they were still there.
Just curious if anyone took an iron to theirs yet... :D
richdvn 05-09-07, 11:53 PM Early impression: I like it. Got mine a few days ago from HSN, no problems. Can't beat ease of use, with the following notes:
- there's 16 screw-type metal pegs used to secure the support leads and the "feet". They work, but they're a pain (we have mostly red clay earth here.) Skinny metal tent pegs will be fine for me here.
- the support leads aren't adjustable. Visit your hardware store, drop $20 for some adjustable tethers and you're there. Or tie adjustable knots.
I thought the fan noise was pretty noticeable. I wouldn't call it a deal breaker, but it was worse than I hoped. To be fair, I was a professional musician for a long time and I am extremely picky about audio. And I, too, left the screen out in the sun for two straight sunny days with nothing doing about the screen wrinkles. I am considering ironing (very low, with a bunch of towels) or using a hair dryer as a low power heat gun.
I also noticed that the low edge of the screen is only two feet or so off the ground. I'm going to try and rig some way to hang my projector (as opposed to table-top use) so that people can sit in front of the screen.
I can't post an URL in this message, so imagine Borat speaking: please to finding review of screen at website call projectorreviews of dot the com slash Manufacturers and slash Gemmy with slash index dot with a-s-p. Bouncy bouncy.
My (low budget) setup:
InFocus SP4805
LiteON LVW5005 DVD player
Mackie 808M amp
Community CSX-35 speakers
Ultimate speaker stands
bunch of cables
(I know I said "budget" setup, but the audio was left over from the band days ... so it didn't cost ME nuttin'.)
The block party is Memorial Day weekend, so I figure I'll test it again before then. Maybe I'll manage some pictures.

Lisa2sal 07-15-07, 11:34 AM I am researching purchasing an outdoor theater. I have been looking a the one offered on Frontgate for 1999.

victor-eyd 07-15-07, 12:25 PM No, its is not a good value at all. The frontgate $1999 model uses a 96" 16:9 screen (probably by Sima) and your sound source is from the DV11 itself, ie no other audio components. Now compare this to the gemmy solution: 149" screen for $200 or so. The DV11 now costs about $900 (less if look around, almost half this price if you get a refurb or its predecessor, the DV10-which btw is no different). You can buy a tripod for about $50.00 and so for under $1200 you have a screen that is 50% bigger but way way less than the frontgate model.

Lisa2sal 07-15-07, 02:29 PM Thanks for the reply. So I would also need to get some speakers as well? Are they relatively easy to hook up to that system? I have also heard that the Epson Moviemate 25 is a good option. What is the best choice for quality pciture and sound?
kpkube@prodigy.n 07-16-07, 01:26 PM Hello everyone,
Just to let everyone know that walmart com has the Gemmy screen in stock for 179.97 a $20 drop in price. I ordered one last week at 199.97
checked the web site saw the price difference. Called walmart online and got the refund for the difference. Can't wait till it arrives.
BuffaloJim 07-17-07, 10:24 AM Lisa,
I own the Optoma DV10 and the Gemmy screen. It makes a decent combination, although the sound could be louder in an outdoor setting. For ease of use, it can't be beaten. We normally use the DV10 indoors, but we've taken it to friends' homes and on vacation. It never fails to amaze people.
In order to play on the Gemmy, the DV10 needs to sit on the ground, (or a piece of plywood) because it directs the picture upwards at a fairly steep angle. You won't need a tripod.
Overall, these two items make a great combo. I think you'll use the DV10 (or DV11) a lot. We usually just project to a wall which almost always works well. But like I said, it never fails to impress.
Jim
Lisa2sal 07-17-07, 01:00 PM Jim,
Thanks for the advice (from a former Buffalonian:)
I ordered the Gemmy screen it should be here by Friday.
I am going to shop around for the DV10, is it possible to hook
additional speakers to the DV10?
I'll let you know how it works out,
Thanks again,
Lisa
BuffaloJim 07-17-07, 01:57 PM Lisa,
The DV10 does have an audio out port, but you would need to hook up self-powered speakers or a receiver with speakers to it. I've used a self-powered speaker and it works quite well. In outdoor settings, it definitely makes a difference.
Take a look at ebay for the DV10. There's usually a few of them on there, both new and refurbished. Normally I have no problem purchasing refurbished electronics, but I worry about the lamp in a used projector. I'd probably buy new.
There's a lot of Buffalonians scattered throughout the country, there's just not many of them still here.
Jim
drunkonjack 07-17-07, 11:39 PM Placed my order today . I hope to have it by next week .
Lisa2sal 07-22-07, 09:59 AM Got the Gemmy screen and a DV11, tried it last night with couple of issues. Ok I admit I am not the most knowledgable when it comes to projectors as this is my first one. The picture even with adjusting the zoom and moving it around was bigger than the screen. Also the sound from the projector was not really loud enough with all the crickets and tree frogs we have around so we attempted to hook up some speakers and never could get them to work. So my question is how do I adjust the picture to better fit the screen and is there some sort of setting or something I need to make the speakers work. (Good thing we kept the group small and fed them well :) I am hoping to try movie night again this week.
Thanks so much,
Lisa
4Dthinker 07-22-07, 11:16 AM If your projected image is larger than the screen, then you need to ether zoom out, or move the projector farther from the screen.
The RCA red/white line out, or headphone 1/8" jacks on a projector, will not alone power speakers at a useful volume level for outdoors. You need an amplifier or A/V receiver (also an amplifier) to take that audio output from the projector and amplify it for speakers.
A better strategy, though, is to takes the audio output from your DVD player and run it directly to the amplifier.
You "might" find some computer type self amplified speakers you can use from the 1/8" headphone output of either the DVD player or the projector.
Lisa2sal 07-22-07, 11:37 AM Ok. The DV11 has a built in DVD player so I am using that and the Audio out on the back of the DV11 has two outputs stereo and digital. My thought was that I could get a set of JBL 4" 2-way bookshelf speakers (bestbuy) or the Polk Atrium Indoor/Outdoor 41/2" speakers, will they hook into the digital output (1 connection) or do i need to somehow hook up a receiver to the dv11 if so what output do I plug the receiver into the audio in (red and white). I am just a little confused as if you can't tell :)
If your projected image is larger than the screen, then you need to ether zoom out, or move the projector farther from the screen.
Maybe in bizzarro world. ;)
In my world we zoom in or move the pj closer.
4Dthinker 07-22-07, 04:56 PM OK, RDZeke, you're right. Yes I live in a bizzaro world. I had my thinking cap on inside-out. ;-)
At least I was only half wrong though. Zoom in-ing makes the image larger You zoom out to return to normal size..
BuffaloJim 07-22-07, 07:45 PM Lisa,
You have to use powered speakers. You'll know they're powered speakers because you'll have to plug them in to an outlet. You'll almost certainly use the stereo output on the DV11. As far as the size of the picture goes, just bring the DV11 as close to the screen as you have to in order to fill the screen correctly.
Jim
Lisa2sal 07-23-07, 04:44 PM Jim
Thanks for the info. I ended up using my Bose wave radio (had to go to radio shack to get a connection) from the speaker (non-digital) output on the DV-11 to the audio in the Bose. Since we will be sitting in the Garage and the screen is in the driveway this should be enough sound as it has the Garage walls to bounce off of. I may have another 2 bose speakers (used to be hooked to a PC) to hook into as well got to check.
Thanks again for all the advice. I still need to play with the size of the screen but hey at least everyone will be able to here over the crickets and frogs.
Lisa
Since it has been a while since discussed, has anyone figured out a good solution to the wrinkle problem?
Thanks
Mike
BuffaloJim 08-22-07, 05:49 PM Although the wrinkles are always somewhat visible, they're generally not a problem. I usually set the Gemmy up early in the day. By movie time, the wrinkles have all but disappeared. The sun and heat of the day go a long way to get rid of them.
Jim
auscarmom 09-13-07, 12:43 AM Does anyone use "surround sound" speakers with their outdoor movies? As others have mentioned, I was wondering what's the easiest way for the sound. I have the projector which is easy to remove from our ceiling mount, a drop down screen, but what about the sound? Do I have to hook up all of the speakers, amp, etc.? I was hoping there was just a big outdoor speaker that could be used for this purpose. I'm thinking that, outside, you don't really need sound from all around. At least for us I think just one speaker or two would be fine. Do you agree and is that possible?
rgroves 09-13-07, 08:01 AM I don't have an outdoor theater, but I want one.....But from my reading on this forum...
You should at least go with 2 speakers. so you can get the stereo separation and you can hear the left/right audio like it should be.
If you want a bigger "WOW", add a sub. While it won't shake people off their feet or rattle their butts, it's the added touch that helps.
If you want the "THAT WAS AWESOME" factor, go for 5.1 surround.
It's all in what you want to do. If it's the first one, go with 2 speaker stereo and see how it works for you. Even test it out to before hand to see if that's really the way you want it before everyone shows up. If it looks/sound good to you, then your guests will LOVE IT. You are the biggest critic of yourself, so if you can make yourself happy with the setup, then it's going to WOW everyone else.
For me, I'm waiting for our Sunroom to be built onto the house and I plan on hooking up a proj to the underside of the overhang and have the rear speakers on the corners of the roof. Then run the fronts and sub out in the yard to where my screen would eventually go.... BTW, I've not bought any of the equipment yet, nor have I told the wife...so, don't let her know or she'll kill me....LOL
jpturner 10-05-07, 05:19 PM I use a 3.1 setup for surround sound (3 fronts and a subwoofer). No rear speakers, makes for a pretty easy setup and breakdown. For me, a subwoofer makes all the difference outdoors. Good luck!
My Gremmy had its maiden voyage tonight. Results were spectacular! In all we had about 15 people or so stop by throughout the night; we demoed tons of clips (a lot of CG stuff like Cars and Finding Nemo and some action stuff) and watched National Treasure (Nick Cage). Everybody loved it! I'm using mine with a 720p Mitsubishi HD1000u projector and a modded Xbox over Component cables. The projector was plenty bright and had more than enough throw to cover the screen fully. Colorful movies like Finding Nemo looked absolutely amazing. It was a bit cold (35 degrees!) but everyone had fun. I'm really looking forward to using it more in the summer months!
The wrinkles were a bit of a nuisance but only noticeable during light-colored bright scenes in the movie; if anyone has a good way to get rid of them please share. I'm not sure if there is a good way to remove them or not due to the design of the material. The fan noise is much louder than I thought it would be, but the speakers were up loud enough that it was more or less unnoticable and it kind of blended into the background noise. I think that there is definitely a difference between a home theater setup in your house and a go-anywhere outdoor setup like this in terms of what you come to expect...inside your home you want absolute perfection, but outside with this screen I didn't really care about the wrinkles or fan noise. Everyone just had a good time watching the huge picture while relaxing and eating outside. For the price, I think it can't be beat. I would definitely recommend this screen to anyone looking for a good deal on a very portable outdoor screen.
Chris Dugger 12-20-07, 12:39 PM My new Gemmy made it's first appearance last night....
It replaced the old style Gemmy....
The new screen height is much better as the bottom of the screen now sits around 4 feet to 4 1/2 feet off the ground.... site lines are much better...
Last night we watched SHREK THE HALLS (upconverted on a blu ray player), Spiderman 2 (blu), Ghost Rider (HD-DVD), Star Trek Episode (HD-DVD), and Meet The Robinsons (Blu)...
Spectacular!

tc004056 04-20-09, 02:15 PM Hello Clarence. I'm very new to this forum. I'm from Canada, and would like to get into the outdoors'movie watching trend this summer. I am looking at a couple of treads and came upon yours. Like I said I am just starting, and up here in Canada there are no inflatable movie screen suppliers. I was curious about this one (Gemmy Industries). When you say 18' to 20', is this diagonal measurement. Also, you seem to be very satisfied with this screen, do you know if it is available thru mail order.
Best regards,
Christian

kiss_alive 04-22-09, 01:24 AM your right no one in canada sells outdoor screens. i tried amazon.ca and nothing comes up. you might have to make your own. its very easy. i used 1 1/2 PVC and made it 12x7 (12 feet by 7 feet) or 3.6576 meters by 2.1336 meters. and used a painters canvas drop cloth which you can toss on the washer if needed.
