UnnDunn 04-28-08, 10:14 AM Can you use the remote that comes with the 360 instead of the HD-DVD remote with this? There is one for sale for $30 without the remote. I'm considering.
Yes, the small remote works just fine.

The controller also can be used as the remote.
I'm not sure if $30 is a great deal, unless you're getting it new. Best Buy has the HD DVD drive for $50 new, with the remote and King Kong.

high_lander 08-23-08, 09:53 AM So I picked one of these from Fry's for $40 with remote. Not a bad deal considering their HD DVDs are 10 bucks. So far I am digging it. My first foray into HD content on disc.
I also picked up a Sony BDX10S for my PC. I can't tell the diff on these. They both look so good. Seems to me HD DVD is the better deal right now with cheaper movies and players (though dead tech).
The manufacturers need to bring down the price on the BD players and quit with the $30 movies.
high_lander 08-23-08, 09:55 AM BTW, my TV is a 60" Sammy HL-T6187 and my PC monitor is a Gateway FPD2485W. My Vista HTPC picks up the HD player just fine, so I can watch both formats on my PC.
Congrats on getting into HD content high_lander!
As you mentioned, no more new releases on HD DVD, but the pricing is very good now.
Now just get yourself a PJ, and really see how HD can look.;)
high_lander 08-24-08, 11:27 AM Pj?
Pj?
Projector??
Digital Man5 04-07-09, 05:52 PM Hey guys, I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I searched the forum(and Google) and can't seem to find anything on it.
I've got the 360 add on hooked up to my Windows XP HTPC and, for some reason, I can't get it to connect to the net. It always tells me there's a "network error". I've tried this on two different PCs in the house, one with a straight ethernet port and one with a wireless USB adapter, same result. Has anyone been able to get their HD DVD add on online with Power DVD 7.3 in Windows XP?
Any help would be much appreciated. :)
Davinleeds 04-07-09, 06:03 PM Can't get your pc to connect since you added the Xbox drive to your pc? Is that what you mean?
Digital Man5 04-07-09, 06:11 PM No, when I open Power DVD 7.3 and play a "online enabled" HD DVD disc, I try to go online for the "web features"(again, in the HD DVD's menu). It's at that point that I get the "network error" message from the disc, saying that I need to have my player(the HD DVD add on) connected to the internet.
Davinleeds 04-07-09, 06:17 PM Not sure, but HDDVD online content may be outdated and not available. The HDDVD standard has been abandoned and that feature may be also. Or it may be PDVD, if it's not using the latest update. Your "player" is PDVD.
PS, look in PDVD control panel and may be just a setting needs to be enabled.
Digital Man5 04-07-09, 07:16 PM Well, on my LG BH200, I can still get online and download content with discs(just downloaded the Transformers stuff the other night), and back when I had an HD DVD rom in my PC, I could download stuff there as well, it's just this 360 add on that's killing me.
My main reason for wanting to do this is that PDVD 7.3 allows you to use *unlimited* storage for downloaded content, unlike any of the given HD DVD stand alone players(128 to 192 megs). I've got quite a bit of it on my HDD already, I was just looking to get some more from some new discs I had just bought, but I've only got the 360 add on now(sold the HD DVD rom, thinking this would work).
It's pretty wild, you can just watch the files after you've downloaded them, outside of PDVD 7.3(they're just .evo files).
As for the settings, about the only thing you can mess with is the download speed and enabling cookies, both of which are configured correctly(as far as I can tell).
Davinleeds 04-07-09, 08:07 PM That's cool that it's still available for download. Was the previous rom external? I don't know if it should make a difference. I've got the Xbox and a HP100 external and the LG internal BD/HD but never bothered with the content. I'll check it out with next playback.
Digital Man5 04-08-09, 10:53 AM The previous rom was internal, the only reason I ditched it was because it's read-rate on other media(DVD/CD) was incredibly slow. I saw that they had the 360 add on for $30 at Fry's, I needed the remote for the 360 anyway so I just went ahead and grabbed it, then sold the internal HD DVD rom.
jasonstiller 04-08-09, 08:57 PM Anyone know where I can nab a cheap add-on? Mine bought the farm and Ive still got 5 discs I havent watched yet, not counting the planet earth set >:(

Fry's generally has the best deals on them, either online or in the store. They are usually $39.99 and some still come with King Kong. If you watch their flyer, or hit their store regularly you'll see various deals that include the add on as well as some discs. The Harry Potter deal was the best, but they don't seem to offer that one anymore...
premiertrussman 05-03-09, 12:50 PM Hey all,
Just picked up the 360's HDDVD player on ebay and 6 movies for 70 bucks...haha not bad. They are all movies i would have bought on blu ray anyway....So i figure i basically have already paid for the player with savings on movies. Any movies i buy for 1/2 to 1/4 the cost of blu ray now ill be money ahead. Not bad. I figured ill buy HD DVD's until the friggin blu ray prices go down...or until ive gotten all the good movies that are out in HD DVD ;).
Are there any major issues with the HDDVD player one should know about? Ill be hooking it up the an Xbox elite and outputting video via HDMI and audio to my reciever via optical out.
Are there any major issues with the HDDVD player one should know about? Ill be hooking it up the an Xbox elite and outputting video via HDMI and audio to my reciever via optical out.The only issue I've encountered is that some movies have HDMI droupout problems. Some examples are Next, Top Gun, and Transformers. Most don't do it but it's really annoying when it happens.
I ended up switching back to component at 1080i to solve the problem.

Did switching back to 1080i work? I was watching Transformers for the first time and had it drop out every 10 mins or so. Is that inherit in the disc or the player?

I've got the same issue and I use the 360 add-on on my PC using PowerDVD. I never resolved this and just gave up! Also have the same issue for blurays with BD Live
lost0822 05-16-09, 04:48 PM ok i went to use my HD-DVD player for the first time in a long time today so my son could watch Shrek. Well it started up fine but it had a web update to do for the movie....well i did not feel like waiting for that...i canceled it. Well now all of my HD-DVD discs will not play. I thought i remembered from a while back that if you cancel something like that, that you need to delete all the Unknown files under the HD-DVD section on the 360......well i did that and still none of the discs will work.
any suggestions? is there like an update i need to apply since i erased everything under the HD-DVD memory section??? if so....where do i go on the 360 to download it? i could not find somewhere to do that.
thanks.

yes I do actually! The problem there is that as I connect via VGA if I disable it then I get the HDCP error from PDVD  Looks like I can't win, but would rather watch the film than have web-enable content I suppose!! Unless I went digital! Thanks for the info
UPDATE - disabled ANYDVD HD and it played ok, i.e. no HDCP issues! BUT...still no web enabled features!!
auburnfan23 05-22-09, 12:49 AM HD DVD for Xbox sounds good but then I start reading about all the problems with it on here and I do not think I am going to get it now..

If you're using it with your Xbox, there are no issues;it becomes more complicated when using it connected to a PC.

Forgot that PDVD won't work with web enabled features in my PC too but Windvd 9 and TMT did. Some function just stuck with TMT but works fine with Windvd. Still Windvd seems to crash more on me.
champer 06-06-09, 12:48 AM i just bought an HD DVD drive from frys for only 35 bucks and works great. i noticed it has 2 different outputs one mini usb and 2 regular usb. the cable that came with it is USB to mini USB. if i hook it up USB to USB will it be more MBs per sec or will it be the same as the cable it came with ?
Those USB ports are actually a mini hub for connecting other USB items like the camera, wifi adapter etc. The 360 only has 1 USB port so they had to put them in.
onlysublime 06-06-09, 04:59 PM So I'm at Fry's just casually browsing and I see that all the 360 HD-DVD drives are new at $35. Now I wasn't planning on buying it because it's a dead format. But for $35 with a Media Center remote and with so many cheap HD-DVD movies out there, I thought what's $35? Great movies for cheap! Transformers new was $1.99! A ton of movies for less than $10.
I plug it into my Windows 7 64-bit RC1 and it works perfectly out of the box. Of course, I had to find PowerDVD 7.3 because I heard that's the last version to support HD-DVD.
Now, I'm ripping them to the PC and encoding them to MKV so that I don't have to worry about the HD-DVD drive dying or the discs not working.
My question is, how do I know what resolution the movie is playing at? I set my monitor to 1920x1440. But I thought for HD-DVD and BluRay to work on a PC, you needed to be HDCP all the way, but I have VGA monitors, so I was crossing my fingers that it would work. I have an ATI 4670 card.
Why is it working with VGA and is it downconverting the resolution? It looks so sharp so I'm pretty sure it can't be 480P.
It's so sad the format had to die because the movies are truly beautiful.
baconius 08-12-09, 06:09 PM I recently purchased the 360 HD-DVD add on drive for ~$40 as well. When I hook it up to my 360 pro it outputs 720p through component just fine (wish I'd waited for a 360 elite with hdmi).
Now the problem comes when I try to use it with my HTPC. Currently I'm using a radeon 4850 HDCP enabled video card, 4 gigs of ram, Phenom II cpu, connected to my TV via HDMI. The TV is an LG CRT (can dig up the model if anyone needs it). For Software I have powerdvd 7.3.
All of my HD-DVD movies play video back without a hitch, but after a few minutes of watching the audio syncing becomes unbearable. Lip syncing is notably off and it makes movies unwatchable.
I have read that other users have had similar problems when using this hardware/software combination. I was wondering if there is a solution to the lip syncing issue or if other software exists that might be a better option. Windvd 9 plus blu-ray is marketed as HD-DVD compatible but some users who have tried it reported that it didn't work for them.
Any suggestions?
