View Full Version : Stevodude's Theatre retreat
stevodude 09-21-06, 01:50 AM Hi Guys/Galls This is just a placeholder for my theatre/media room I'm currently building.
I have done the basics ( lifted house, walls, doors, projector, speakers, screen etc), just need to make the front stage & speaker stands and justa bout there. pictures are in the Photo Gallery, should be able to link them to this thread one day... but I can't be bothered entering another 4 posts...
anyway, what tremendous ideas there are here, can't beleive the diversity of all these theatre rooms. I got my house lifted , so I can build a HT room in underneath :-) , I always had plans for a HT/Media/Games/Meeting room.
Currently I have projector/speakers/amp/dvd/pc/dvb cards, sw/scheduling setup for a while now I thought I'd get to the finishing off stages.
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/thumbs/mount.JPG (http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/mount.JPG)
See my screw holes where I mounted it too close, so projected image would not fill the screen :-/... before mounting the screen I had it at the back of the room projecting onto the whole wall, but decided to wak up the drop screen and move projector to it's proper place where I wired the cabling in.
as you can see I'm running my home made VGA over Cat5 :-)

I just hosted that part for my reference, but original site for vga-cat5 here: dougburbidge/vgaovercat5.html (http://www.geocities.com/dougburbidge/vgaovercat5.html)
It's hard to take photo's of a running projector :-/ With flash
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/thumbs/screen9.JPG (http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/screen9.JPG)
Without Flash
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/thumbs/lightsoff.JPG (http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/lightsoff.JPG)
anyway, I want to get the dark surround completed, so I am looking at something reasonably simple, did a quick sketchup of what eventually will happen, but haven't included: 7.1 setup, or 2 teer seating/

I mainly did this to get an idea of the front stage, not for the rest, which I will be changing/adding to drawings...
mainly the box's/stage will be a medium/dark grey, and there will be a secondary black area around the screen, then top & botton on the inside of those is adjustable screen mask (for 2.35 format), but mostly will be left out of the way in 16x9 format.
projector is panasonic ae700. 100" image/longhorn screen - yea cheap, cause it came with the projector.
I wanted to make them box sections, so I can take them apart down the track and either put in a bigger screen or wider to allow a full room width 2.34x1 format.
Looking forward to seeing some of the images.
What are your final dimensions and plans for the room, are you going to do a dedicated HT room or are you putting in a bar, poker table, pool table etc..?
Good luck with the project.
Cheers
stevodude 09-24-06, 11:50 PM OK, posted a couple of photo's, and also below what I want it to look like.
Behind the curtain will be a space-invader cafe style, upright 2 player mame cabinet & a pinball machine (yet to get pinball machine).
Also want the riser to be movable - ie on wheels that I lock down for movie viewing, and also can roll to back of room out of the way for meetings...
Only other option is Higher stool type chairs, but I'm sure me mates won't like sitting on those...

stevodude 09-25-06, 09:09 PM I'm not sure about boxing in all the speakers, so this is another form I might try.
This would be simpler to make/build, front stage/shelving made out of pine, or mdf, top coated in same stuff as rear wall masking panels ( a dark dull grey fleese), behind that black felt masking panels.
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/theatre_front_basic.JPG
stevodude 09-27-06, 11:31 PM Made a few changes to my design of what I want.
lowered tower speakers to 'ear hight, increased rear seat position ( to see full projection), base on 5'8" man, the riser is 2xsteps of 6" ea... does that sound about right?
Need to add a soffit( is that what is called? - the built out section above head height around the room for sound deadening & lighting?
Only problem is ( not shown) is the Airconditioner on the back wall will be cut in half with soffit.
Unless I put in in from the LHback corner around front and LHS until the curtains, or lower the curtain rail to fit soffit all way to back wall ( avoiding aircon).
I might do a modified diagram of that, with Back wall in floor-ceiling book case.
Overall view of room area & doors.
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/theatre_top_distance.JPG
View from just behind the back wall, sound traps on back wall on, and near the front, Circular Bass traps under surrounds. Reason I have the surrounds at there current hight, is most speaker placement people seem to say the surrounds should be either placed in the 20% range of height, either 20% down from top or 20% up from bottom... dunno.
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/theatre_back.JPG
Left Hand corner view
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/theatre_back_lhs.JPG
Sort of above foward view.
http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/501/theatre_back_topdown.JPG
As for your riser height there is a calculator for that based on seating position and size and height of screen from floor etc. Also it seems that beam down the center will cause problems with a riser won't it?
Are your fabrics that cover things acoustic materials? I ask because you mention dark grey fleece.
where is the access to the room? is it back near the rear couch where the wavy white curtain is?
stevodude 09-28-06, 06:50 PM AH good idea, I did the drawing on the assumption of viewing angles and an average person of 5'8", so second row gets 100% vew of screen.
I just measured the height from top of riser to beam and gives me 6'3"... will be OK for the average person, but my brother inlaw who comes around farly often is 6'3" so he is a good measure of a fairly tall person :-)
I am 5'7" and my wife is 5'7" so hopefully should be OK for most people, might have to put some padding around the beam for those tall people who might bump their noggin... :-)
riser height is 11" split evenly, so should be OK.
only other issue I have is the speakers look funny at that height, but is the recommended 20% down from ceiling...
entry way is looking foward from the back of the room you can see LHS has a single french door which is entry from inside the house, and double french doors on the right for entry from the outside patio/barbeque area, the long curtain is my games area, spaceinvaders/mame cabinet etc...
I might have to move the chairs a bit closer as I measured 2x the screen width from the front of the chairs, not from viewing distance...
stevodude 10-01-06, 07:25 PM I might lift the hight of the projection screen, this will give more room for the rear viewer.
In the mean time I wipped up a pair of bass traps over the weekend.
breakdown in cost was:
Wadding: $30
Wire fencing 50mmx50mmx1.8mm x 9 meters: $28
Fibreglass bats: $49 per bag ( just over 1 bag of 16 peices.
wood - had lying around, but probably about $20 worth
Glue sticks: $10
Staples: $5
string:$1
Time: Free
Material: I have some quite expensive material whcih I won't list as it will vary for others from $2 to $20 a meter. ( Needed about 4 sq meters )
Total: about $170 aud for 2 bass traps.
let me know what you think.
Placed in room, but I have not put covering matterial over them yet...
16" wide 5' tall in your measurements.
The Naked innards or internal walls...

to see the complete build process go here http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/BassTraps (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude)
Next will be making some wall panels some time over the next couple of months.
stevodude 01-29-07, 10:04 PM done some updates, built a 2.35:1 curve screen & added an anamorphic lense setup.
Go here to see the screen design http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=789663
of course go here for the build pictures http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/curvescreen
Next up is masking, which I have ordered some 3 meters of black felt, and will make a masking frame out of something... not sure yet... has to be reasonably light, and bendy, but rigid.
Probably 12mm mdf that I will to a half join at the corners and cover with felt, then this will be (with flat plate) screwed to wood around the back of the curved screen, with hidden hinges on the wings ( 1200x330mm ) covered in felt for the 16:9 masking.

Steve Scherrer 01-30-07, 11:20 AM Stevo--good to see you over here from the DIYAudio site--your anamorphic lens looks great! ;)
What program are you using for your computer-based images? I am using a basic shareware version of Room Arranger, which does well, but your's is nicer.
stevodude 01-30-07, 08:31 PM It's fantastic freeware application from my mates at Google inc. called google sketchup
google it, download it, install it, use it :-) they also have a 3d search function to find models in google search to download and use.
I used a few, but am now pretty efficeint at building anything I need from a flat 2d shape and extruding it to 3d :-)
that curve screen design took me about 1 hour to whip up, but any changes now only takes a couple of minutes.
note: you can also print the 2d plan and elevation with dimensions if you build it to the correct scale :-)
stevodude 01-31-07, 12:26 AM I've also completed some surround speaker stands using the 2 bits of wood & storm drain pipe with steal rod bolting wood ends together method.
Will post pics of these, but very simple and idea/method was posted in the speaker section of avs forums somewhere.
basically each stand (2 surrounds & center) is made up of 2 pieces of wood big enough to sit a surround on it, and drill a hole through the center of each wood, and recess a larger hole for the nut to sit in & a piece of threaded rod through the center. and a piece of pvc pipe ( I used a 90mm diameter, 1200mm long for surrounds & around 400mm for center).
This can then be filled with anything you like for heavy & strength, some used sand, rocks, or socks filled with sand and placed in the pvc pipe and ends bolted together.
I haven't put anything inside the pvc as the wood I used was VERY hard and heavy hard wood & was heavy enough without filling the pvc, but might down the track put a few kilo's of sand bags in the bottom.
pics of stands will be posted tonight - just put this in while I remembered.
I have next week off, so should have the masking completed by next weekend hopefully...
one day I might actually get to sit down and watch a whole movie from start to finish without interuption... maybe I'll be finished the theatre by the time my kids are old enough to understand violent adult movies and can watch with me, but with them being .08 and 3.5 years old, I don't think they'd like LOTR,Matrix,Th fastest indian, 12 monkeys, Starwars etc... :-)
stevodude 02-01-07, 07:06 AM Speaker stands, They still need some finishing off, like a coat of paint over the plastic, or laminate, or cover in material... not sure yet... I'll probably end up leaving them as is. I'm more of a functional user, than a finiky finisher :-)

The front one looks a bit dodgy as it needs sanding and a coat of furniture polish like the others, probably will do that next week...

stevodude 02-07-07, 10:43 PM OK done masking, and I must say this makes a Massive difference to the image contrast and brightness, I had to reduce the brightness levels by about %20 to get the image the way I liked it...
Material used for masking:
2 x 2400x900 9mm mdf $40
3.6 meters of black felt $40
6mm staples $4.99
staple gun - already had
velcro (industrial strength - not the cheapest) @ $14 for 2 meters
I ended up making 2 lengths for the horizontal, because I couldn't find any thin/cheap wood 200mmx3150mm, so used in 2 sections, and 1 section for each vertical.
cut to size ( I ended up making the wood 250mm width because the width of the felt was 900mm and means I used all width of the felt.
placed on felt and cut 25mm around the edges
http://lh6.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm4j2LFccI/AAAAAAAAAR4/kSD7dhsDe7s/s288/IMG_5927.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028753384912810434)
The staples I didn't use as they were 1mm too wide for my staple gun, back to the shop for the right size
http://lh4.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm4vWLFcdI/AAAAAAAAASA/JjGuG-DP9ak/s288/IMG_5930.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028753582481306066)
The Velcro I used to hold the masking on the screen:
http://lh3.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5TGLFceI/AAAAAAAAASI/sCbMIWT1QTU/s288/IMG_5931.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754196661629410)
Example of how much velcro I needed for each section (not much)
http://lh3.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5YGLFcfI/AAAAAAAAASQ/n3Iz32CGhm8/s288/IMG_5932.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754282560975346)
Almost there, ran out of velcro so had to get some more (only bought 1meter, and amazing how fast you use it up even with little bits...) :
http://lh6.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5c2LFcgI/AAAAAAAAASY/jPq1EW_dPWs/s288/IMG_5933.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754364165353986)
The Staple gun I used:
http://lh4.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5hWLFchI/AAAAAAAAASg/l0irfqFWil4/s288/IMG_5934.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754441474765330)
once the wood is cut & the felt is cut ready to go, make sure you have the NON fluffy side up, and stretch it out flat by smoothing your hand over the felt till it looks flat, then plonk your wood in the center and start with stapling each short end first (from centre to close to the edges):
http://lh5.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5rmLFciI/AAAAAAAAASo/aow8cHJFySc/s288/IMG_5935.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754617568424482)
part 2 to follow
stevodude 02-07-07, 10:47 PM Part 2 masking:
Next start on the long sides ( do both sides at the same time) start with the center and staple both sides (L & R), then half the distance from center to ends and staple both sides, and repeat until you think you have the edge done enough for a straight edge. ( I probably over did this, but hey, they are straight ) :-)
like so, but I did another 2 staples between each of those ones, so probably 20 odd staples per 1.5 meter length:
http://lh4.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5vWLFcjI/AAAAAAAAASw/8AUDVsm93xo/s288/IMG_5936.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754681992933938)
Next up was the corners, should look like this:
http://lh6.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5y2LFckI/AAAAAAAAAS4/O-3TqNqaMP0/s288/IMG_5942.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754742122476098)
Upolsterer's probably know the right way to do corners, but this is how I did them & seemed to work OK.
Fold one side of quite firm and staple close to the edge, and then a couple more staples round the area to old that side tight:
http://lh4.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm51WLFclI/AAAAAAAAATA/h0CtbWWhzjg/s288/IMG_5943.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754785072149074)
Then fold the other side over quite tight and repeat:
http://lh4.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm54WLFcmI/AAAAAAAAATI/R2KWlB0ySwM/s288/IMG_5944.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754836611756642)2.35:1
Then pull the left over bit apart and spread and pull firmly and hold down and should look like this:
http://lh5.google.com/image/stevodude/Rcm5_mLFcnI/AAAAAAAAATQ/sXIR62HpkZI/s288/IMG_5945.JPG (http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/2351CurveScreenMasking/photo#5028754961165808242)
Then Staple it as close to the corner as you can, and then staple the ends down.
With the velcro, I put the pieces on the screen where I wanted them, and then put the top piece of velcro (after taking off the backing and as it would normally be places it over the velcro on the screen so the sticky side is pointing out, then I just basically held the masking sheet up onto the screen where I wanted it and pushed firmly at roughly where the velcro points were... worked for me.
I had a bit of a gap between the left horizontal and the left vertical piece, which I rectified with a piece of veclro (loops or fluffy section) on each section of masking on the back, and then put a long strip of (hooks or pointy velcro), between them tightly, which pulled them together perfectly.
anyway finall result below:

watched some Hi def content, and so far I'm loving it.
Even my wife has been saying 'what the heck are you doing'... 'do you need to do this?...', but when I finished I showed the wife the final result, and she said 'yes that does look excedingly better, I like it!..' hehehe thank goodness for that :-)
stevodude 02-13-07, 06:13 PM well dvi over cat didn't work, so i'm going to re-work my vga, as I have a spare 3 x highQ coax cables going to projector, so i will do the the VGA's RGB over the 3 coax's & the rest over the cat5 to see if I can remove ghosting completely.
Nice job on the screen. Do you have any screen shots (with out flash) ?
Cheers
stevodude 02-14-07, 06:19 PM not as yet.
have some shots with curve screen, pre-masking.
will post some when I actually get time to watch a movie :-/ pretty hard atm, with the new born...
http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/CurveScreen
UncleScurvy 03-30-07, 08:36 PM Hiya Stevo-- I'm REALLY interested in building something similar to your curved screen, but the files on the picasweb site, like
picasaweb-dot-google-dot-com-slash-stevodude-slash-CurveScreen
seem to be unavailable :( . I'm especially interested in how you determined what curvature to use, and how you did the layout math on the curve.
Thank you SO MUCH!
-bob
stevodude 03-31-07, 05:37 PM yea I've moved my pictures around, but if you go to http://picasaweb.google.com/stevodude/HomeTheatre I have all my theatre photo's in the one spot now.
my curve was done using the 'stick' method, which can be found on these forums.
basically, get a stick the height of your projection from the ground to the top of your image (or slightly longer), and once you have the lense in place.
1.put the stick against the wall at the image's skiniest vertical point (usually the center), and mark top and bottom of image.
2. move stick to outside edge (L or R first) and bring the stick foward (towards projector) until the image has filled the gap between the two points you marked.
3. make sure it's level and measure the distance from the back of the stick to the wall.
This is your 'rise' and from that you can calculate the curvature using normal trigonometry.
There is more info here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=586590
couple of posts down there is a link to download an xls file http://www.talix.com/ISCO/Screen%20Curvature.xls
which you plug in your measurements, and get the points you need. I used about 10 points horizontally to get the curve on a sheet of 3000x300 mdf and used a circular power saw to cut the curve (3 pieces clamped together to do all top/middle/bottom at the same time).

stevodude 09-25-07, 06:10 AM Woooah... 18months since last update hahahaha, been busy busy busy :-)
Anyway, not much has changed, I've bought 2 sets of 3 Home theatre chairs. changed HTPC graphics card from a radeon 9700pro to an ATI x1600 with component out.
So now component to projector (actually it is clearer than my vga that was using 3xav coaxial cables and cat5 for signal).
Photo's... everyone likes photo's :-) taken with my older camera powershot a70, so it's a bit grainier than my ixus400, but will do.
Next step is paint the projector box, and line the prism box with black felt and paint. Then make a plinth for the second row to lift it a bit higher.
Then some remote control masking wings for 16x9 format, then 2 sonotube subs, then some blockout curtains over the glass doors and finish of the skirting around the back.

stevodude 09-25-07, 08:09 AM Tried a couple more screen shots, this time it's madmax I :-) hehehe
Images are slightly out of square due to me placing the camera on the theatre chair arm rest, ie not eye level.
the black border around the images IS the black felt masking.
You can see in the centre bottom I haven't lined up the 2 maskboards quite right yet.

What brand/model seats did you get?
stevodude 09-25-07, 06:05 PM not sure, they where on special from a mega store called super a-mart for $999 for the 3 seater. All seats have recliners, drink holder & arm rest storage.
