I love the networking capability of the 5504 that I have.

I relocated to Vegas and have DirecTV with a denon a/v receiver. Can anyone recommend a setup so that I can have my replaytv networked and record from DirecTV shows.

Any advise would be most welcome.

Lot's of people are controlling/recording DirecTV with their ReplayTVs. What model DirecTV receiver(s) do you have?

Thank you for your reply.

I have one 5040 and the other is the 5504

If you have some links or docs on the step by step, then I would appreciate it.

Slow down, and carefully READ my first question.

What model DirecTV receiver(s) do you have?

BTW, what have you tried so far?

Get rid of that directv receiver and get a D10-100 or better yet one of the RCA models. Go to ebay if you have to.

Connect the serial out on the replay to the low speed data port. this will control your channel changes. Setup your replay with serial control. AGP if you are using a newer receiver.

Call directv and tell them you are changing your receiver. they may tell you that you need a new card. See if they will let you use your old card. If they tell you you need a new card then have them ship one to you free of charge. They will try to charge you $20 but if you ask they will usually give it to you for free.

If you dont wanna go through all of that hassle then you can use your IR blaster. I think you may have to upload some new IR codes, but I'm not sure.

I highly recommend using serial control. I have been using it for about 6 years and it has NEVER failed.

Hi Mikek,

ok, I buy a serial (9 or 15 pin for a 5504 or 5040) to RJ-11 and connect it to the slow data port on the Replay TV. The serial is only for channel changes. What about the programs that I schedule, the OUT to TV from the D10-100 should go into the in from ant/catv, out to tv of replay goes to TV in cable.

Thanks for the advise and suggestions.

When you go shopping for your replacement DirecTV receiver, the listing at http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-71042583/cmd/kbresource/kb-2702475081243803275/view_question!PAGETYPE?documentid=42385&action=view may be helpful.

Might as well paste it here in case the link isn't kept up.

paste:
Q: Which satellite receivers support serial control?

A: Most DirecTV satellite receivers use either the standard serial command set or the newer APG serial command set. The list below only includes some of the boxes using the standard serial command set. ReplayTV 5000s or 5500s that have updated to 5.1, build 144 can use the Serial APG option in setup (IR, Serial, Serial APG) to control the newer DirecTV receivers.

Here is a list of standard serial boxes customers have reported having success with. Again, this list is not complete. Please remember that some DirecTV receivers have a "low speed" port that looks like a phone jack. This a serial port as well.

Most RCA boxes not ending in the letters RG support serial control with ReplayTV. The RCA boxes ending in RG (along with some other DirecTV receivers) use the newer APG serial command. You'll need a 5000 or 5500 unit with software version 5.1, build 144 to control the APG boxes.

If your DirecTV satellite receiver isn't supported serially or you have an older ReplayTV that doesn't support the APG serial command set, you can normally use the IR blaster provided with your ReplayTV to change its channels. The IR code is normally listed by manufacturer. If you are unable to find a working IR code, you may need to get a different receiver.

NOTE: Serial control is not currently supported on any DISH Networks satellite receivers.

Icecow: Could you update that list. The RCA DRD435RH is probably the best directv receiver to use. It was the last model before directv took over.

gee: Get the RCA DRD435RH. Connect the serial out on the replay to the low speed data port on the directv receiver.

On the replaytv setup use serial control APG.

Video out from the directv receiver to video in on replay.

replaytv video out to video in on your Denon.

Denon out to TV in.

mikek, got my receiver hooked it up and the low speed dataport doesn't change the channels. Yes, I set to serial control AGP. Don't see any way on the receiver menu to "enable" the port so assuming it is already enabled.

Additionally, now that I'm having problem with the receiver I've found these posts:
joelbenson added on 02/05/2004:
RCA DRD435RH does NOT work with serial. I didn't bother testing the IR.

DaMic added on 02/29/2004:
RCA DRD435RH Does indeed NOT work with the serial connection "Low Speed Data" link. In fact it will reset the reciever everytime you change channel to searching for single then have to re-download the guide. The IR blaster works with the system, takes about 6sec to change a channel. You need to do fine tuning for the IR blaster to send 3 channels to the unit.

I have 2 in my house that are working fine.

The symtoms you found that were posted earlier are when you use the old serial controller (not APG) to control the receiver.

I don't know why yours isn't working. Sounds like a serial problem with either the receiver or replaytv.

please explain APG vs Serial control....

my 45xx replay used serial to control my sony sat-b2 directv receiver.

what is APG?

it's the same thing as serial control. It's just a newer option on replays to control newer receivers. I think it stands for advanced programming guide, but that is just a guess. I really have no idea what it stands for.

MikeK,

Thank you for posting about the RCA DRD435RH... I got mine in today and am up and running with RTV again after giving up on it with the new DTV receivers. Serial control works flawlessly, and I'm using a Harmony remote to manage all my equipment. Can't tell you how happy I am to have this capability back!

You can add the Sony SAT-HD300 to that list of serial support (APG), as that's what I was using before I "upgraded" to the D* H20 and HR20.

Also, if you're inclined, you can download FlipFlop's Linux boot CD and update the 5K series Replay to the D10 IR codes. I've used it successfully to update my two 5040s and a 5080 to control the D* H20 and HR20 via the IR blaster.

Hmmmm, is there some setting on the RCA DRD435RH receiver to enable the low speed port?

I have a 5040 and recieved the DirecTV D20-100 about a week ago. Went to replaytvupgrade site and click on adding ir codes, download the boot image and followed the directions. Have recorded at least 25 shows and the IR Blaster hasn't failed once.

Nope. Should work right out of the box.

Speaking of the IR blaster method. Periodically, I use one of my directivos as the receiver for one of my replays. As long as you can find an IR code for it, you should be able to use any receiver that can output a signal the replay can see.

You must not to do anything on the directivo when recording with the replay. However, you can be recording on the other Dtivo tuner at the same time. As long as the channel being output to the replay isn't changed. I usually do it during off times. I haven't had a missed channel change with the IR blaster so far.
