...with the same type of disk? DVD-R's copy in about 10-12 minutes on my Pioneer 633 and 640, while DVD-RW's take closer to 30 minutes. But it's always been very consistent for the same type of disk.

And of course 4X vs. 8X vs 16X media will make a difference, too.

Ahh, that's what it is... you nailed it. Sometimes I use -RW, sometimes -R.

I'll have to pay more attention!

Thanks :)

One thing I've been wondering about... sometimes it takes 20 minutes to copy a full disk, sometimes only 10 minutes.... always using high speed copy.

That seems very strange. Mine has been consistent over 100+ discs, with a greatest time of 10 minutes(*) and sometimes 8 or 9 if the DVD won't be quite full. Are you using the same media type evey time? I'm using Taiyo Yuden 8x, and before that Sony 8x when they were still made in Japan.

(*) I don't know if the "time remaining" shown on screen includes the finalize time or not. Usually I start the disc copy and then go off and do something else, So maybe my times are al 1-2 minutes longer than I think, because that's how long it takes to finalize. But I'm sure it's nowhere near 20 minutes.

Hi Stan,

I do think it's the difference between the -RW and -R. I even had it go over 20 minutes.

I'm going to pay attention the next few times, and make a note of the differences more exactly.

That would make sense. I've neve recorded a full -RW myself, but Sean reports that they're slower.

That would make sense. I've neve recorded a full -RW myself, but Sean reports that they're slower....which of course is fully to be expected, since your DVD-Rs will probably have a "8X" or "16X" printed on them, while the DVD-RW's will only have "2X" or "4X"... ;)

A question for those who have had the firmware fix -- do any of you make discs with photo j-pegs?

I have encountered a problem that might be related to the title transfer problem, and I wonder if the new firmware fixed it. I recently (see hints and tips for Pio 640 users thread) transfered j-pegs from photo CDs to the HDD, and then to DVD. You can add titles for folders, and even files (individual j-pegs.) They are accessible in the HDD, but I haven't been successful in transfering them to the DVDs, even when finalized. Has anyone with the firmware fix tried this? Done it successfully? Or, any one without the fix, for that matter?

Help, please? I finally got around to to trying to use the firmware fix - I downloaded the proper zip file, unzipped it and wrote the file to a brand new CD. The instructions say "press and hold stop rec (#14) and while holding press play (#10). The tray will close." When I do that, nothing happens, the tray doesn't close. I tried pushing stop rec first then play, I tried pushing them together, neither seems to work.

Would anyone have any idea what might be wrong? Thanks

Are you using the buttons on the front panel of the recorder (behind the door) rather than on the remote?

Are you holding both buttons down for several seconds?

If you answer yes to both questions, then I would next test to make sure the both buttons work under normal operation. Can you stop recording and play a recording using the front panel buttons? If not, then the problem is a faulty button on the front panel.

Wendy, I have successfully updated 3 machines with this process, but experienced the same sort of problem you describe on my first try on my first machine.

Try powering down the dvdr first without any dvd in the tray, and then powering it back up and starting the procedure again. It should work this time(as long as you are using the buttons on the machine and not the remote).

Hi, Wendy!

In addition to the other responses, did you remember to finalize the CD when you recorded it? Many CD-burning prograns have finalizing the *session* as default, but you need to finalize the *disc*.

Please let us know which suggestion worked for you! Many of us have done this firmware upgrade successfully, so we want to help you figure out what's wrong.

Well, do I feel silly - I didn't even realize there was a door on the front panel!

When I used those buttons, it worked flawlessly. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I just tried the patch too. No problem! I had more trouble registering on this forum than I did installing the patch.

I'm in Canada and went from v 6.15 to 6.20 on my 640H-S.

Thanks to all you nutbars who get WAY too involved with their electronic toys. The geeks shall inherit the earth.

Finally got around to updating my 640H-S firmware (6.15 to 6.20). Did it myself in a few minutes.
