View Full Version : NIN coming to HD-DVD Droid6 09-26-06, 09:26 AM Nine Inch Nails are coming to both HD Formats and DVD live in early 2007. Trailer (http://www.nin.com/components/mm/byit_teaser_225.mov) Sofdec7 09-26-06, 09:42 AM Looks great! I loved their last DVD and can't wait to pick this up. I'm still waiting on them to release their video collection on any current format. Odys 09-26-06, 10:52 AM Great news! Those first few music releases didn't do anything for me. This will be amazing in HD. nyg 09-26-06, 11:02 AM I love NIN and will definitely be picking up the HD DVD version of this release. Saw them twice on The Downward Spiral tour. Trent still is making great music! barry v s 09-26-06, 05:58 PM Their "And all that there could have been" live DVD in DTS is still a reference for sound IMHO. On a 100" screen it really puts you there. I can't wait to see it in HD-DVD. RabidRob 09-26-06, 07:11 PM i am SO looking foward to this!!!! zmeister 09-26-06, 08:17 PM Their "And all that there could have been" live DVD in DTS is still a reference for sound IMHO. On a 100" screen it really puts you there. I can't wait to see it in HD-DVD. Exactly!! My favorite concert DVD! Saw them in Charlotte this year. They had to suspend the show for about 30 min due to thunderstorms, allowed everybody to get under the shed at Verizon, restarted the show, then a big storm hit, windblown rain, lightning, during "Head Like a Hole" made for a great scene hope it makes the disc. :D puzzle 09-26-06, 08:52 PM Wow, I'm not the NIN fan that I was in my younger days, but this should be awesome. I'll buy it. But here's what I REALLY want to see on HD DVD! OKONOKOS (http://media.bmgonline.com/rcarecords.com/my_morning_jacket/video/okonokos_1min_300_mp4.qtl) Kris Deering 09-26-06, 09:23 PM Wow, never even heard of Okonokos, but the little trailer looked good. Didn't get a gauge on the sound with no lyrics though. Can't wait for NIN, saw them early in the With Teeth tour and loved it. AATCHB is still my favorite live concert DVD. puzzle 09-26-06, 10:38 PM Wow, never even heard of Okonokos, but the little trailer looked good. Didn't get a gauge on the sound with no lyrics though. Can't wait for NIN, saw them early in the With Teeth tour and loved it. AATCHB is still my favorite live concert DVD. Actually, the band is called My Morning Jacket. Okonokos is the name of their upcoming concert film. Anyway, their live shows are incredible and this film is sure to be as well. Sorry to slightly hijack the thread. Michael Osadciw 09-27-06, 11:18 AM I can't wait. I'm a huge NIN fan, saw the last tour twice (one with a soundcheck and a meeting with Trent...I'm a Spiral Member ). Glad to see the "Beside You In Time" HD release...I can't wait. I'd upgrade to 1080p right now just to watch this disc. I agree in expecting no less than top quality in A/V...Trent seems very particular with this...The last DVD has an amazing and powerful sound mix...and awesome video from only SD-cams...it looks far better than most other concerts brought to DVD that claim better cameras... The release better have lossless audio...I imagine it would. Also, I really hope "...and all that Could Have Been" concert will get a new BD/HD-DVD release with lossless audio, even though the video will never be better than 480. How about adding in "Closure" too...ummm...when oh when will that release ever be untangled from legal limbo?? Might as well as the whole NIN Woodstock '94 concert to the wishlist too, since it was shot in 1080i HD. ...but I have a feeling that'll be something I can never have... ;) jm9843 09-27-06, 01:47 PM I echo everyone else's comments here; so glad to see this one coming. I have to hand it to Trent; he always seems aware of new trends in technology. And considering how great the 5.1 dts mix was on the last one, I'd be shocked to not see a TrueHD track included. BOSS10L 09-27-06, 01:53 PM This is so going to rock... Kris Deering 09-28-06, 09:12 PM Just a heads up, Rob Sheridan posted this on the NIN Spriral forum for Spiral members: This could still change, but as of right now the audio specs are: Blu-Ray and HD-DVD: Dolby TrueHD (lossless compression 48/24) Dolby Digital 5.1 Dolby Stereo Standard DVD: Dolby Digital 5.1 DTS Surround 5.1 Dolby Stereo Guess that means that unless you have a PS3 for BD, no lossless audio. Granted this could change, but that is what we have right now. Also, they are using VC1 for the video codec and they're already saying that they may do a BD50 because they are having issues (I've heard that VC1 has trouble with native 1080i content so this may be the issue) and they think doubling the average bitrate for video may solve it which would require more space. darinp2 09-29-06, 01:34 AM This could still change, but as of right now the audio specs are: Blu-Ray and HD-DVD: Dolby TrueHD (lossless compression 48/24) ... Using 48/24 instead of 96/24 even though it is a music disc helps from a room-left-for-video standpoint. It won't surprise me if some concerts get 96/24 treatment in the future (maybe just for marketing reasons), but I believe that is another 6Mbps right off the peak bandwidth allocation (with 48/24 taking about 6Mbps peak). Back when we were discussing bandwidth and I brought up concerts as one issue, this is the kind of thing that I was thinking about. Looks like somebody there agrees with me that concerts are something that we should want to look very good and not just compromise the video. I'll probably buy this disc after hearing how much they care about getting the video right. For concert stuff, people can see what Amir's take on it was in the past when we were discussing bandwidth limitations here (bolding is mine): http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8038735&&#post8038735 On sampling rate, the application really is not film but music concerts. I actually have two HD DVDs from Japan that have 24-bit, 5.1 tracks on them at 96Khz. But in this scenario, the video is less important (just the piano man on a dark stage). Needless to say, when the sound is more important, we can always allocate the right bits to it. VC-1 will peform well even at low data rates. I have been reminding folks that T2 WMV-HD was encodeded in constant bit rate at ~6 mbit/sec with old tools. There is so much we can do for concerts with video rates of say, 10 Mbit/sec and peaks into high teens and let the rest go to music. Now we can see that the reality is that Trent wants the video to be right for this NIN video, they should have a whole lot more than 10Mbps allocated for the video given the other things listed as going on the disc (unless the video is very long) and they've reportedly put something like 200 person-hours into it, still aren't happy, and are considering going to dual layer on Blu-ray (if they can get them) to get higher bitrates and hopefully make the video look better. I'm glad there are people like that who don't want to compromise the video just because it is concert footage. --Darin Kris Deering 09-29-06, 02:31 AM While I agree for the most part a NIN concert isn't a typical concert scenario. NIN is known for their outstanding visuals during their concerts (literally project onto a screen in front of them and cue to the music) and their lighting is almost without equal. So this isn't Elton John sitting at a piano or a couple of rockers playing guitars in from of some Peavey amps. This is a full on in your face visual treat. I can only imagine how hard it would be with just the lighting they use. I think it is safe to say that this could very well represent worst case scenario for a concert DVD, except for maybe the lack of 96/24 (which it may not have been captured in anyways). turansformer 09-30-06, 08:44 PM Exactly!! They had to suspend the show for about 30 min due to thunderstorms, allowed everybody to get under the shed at Verizon, restarted the show, then a big storm hit, windblown rain, lightning, during "Head Like a Hole" made for a great scene hope it makes the disc. :D Oh man.... I was at that show. That concert was in full swing right before one of the concert coordinators announced the show was going to be suspended until the rain went away. Trent comes out to the audience after the 30 minutes and says, "This concert was like we were having sex... I was leading you up to the orgasm, and right as it was about to happen.... they stopped the show!" He was pissed. Everyone was pissed. Hell, some guy got arrested during the break for getting too rowdy, and he got a standing applause. Then Trent started playing The Frail right as it started to rain. It was poetic. Unfortunately, neither of the two shows used for the new disc coming out were shot in Charlotte. That's ok, thought, because I'm still going to pre-order the disc when its available. kami 10-01-06, 01:51 AM My new most anticipated HD title. Wow, just wow. bring it on!! AnthonyB 10-13-06, 04:04 PM Any idea when this is scheduled for release? ColinZeal 10-13-06, 06:59 PM Oh my.. That track in the teaser.. What is that? nyg 10-13-06, 08:46 PM Oh my.. That track in the teaser.. What is that? Beside You In Time from their With Teeth CD. They used the same song as a teaser to that CD before it came out. Terrific disc, I suggest you buy it! :D Milt99 10-13-06, 09:34 PM I'm hoping this is just the start. High quality music, in Hi-Def with a Hi-Res surround soundtrack. Nirvana. AnthonyB 10-13-06, 10:42 PM I'd trade a wetdream/sex with Lucy Liu for this DVD RIGHT NOW. ColinZeal 10-14-06, 06:31 AM Beside You In Time from their With Teeth CD. They used the same song as a teaser to that CD before it came out. Terrific disc, I suggest you buy it! :D Thanks! Great song. Can´t wait for this disc to come out. superklye 01-04-07, 10:48 AM Any idea when this is scheduled for release? It’s coming out 2/27/07 and the full tracklist can be found here: http://nin.com/halo/22/index.html It’s looking to be like an absolutely awesome release, my only complaints being: No Mr. Self Destruct, Please, Deep or Star****ers on the main feature and no La Mer/Into the Void, Down In It or Final Solution (w/Peter Murphy of Bauhaus) from the summer tour. All of those songs were amazing with the 2005-2006 lineup (the best incarnation of NIN ever, IMO)…however, I’m really glad that Closer is on there twice because the Closer (to the Only Time) version played on this tour pwnz all. But, knowing Trent, there will be a ton of easter eggs, so I can only hope some of those songs are hidden on the discs somewhere... I’m a huge NIN fan…saw ‘em 10 times last year and likely 10 more times this year as they go out on tour again starting in February in Europe with that ending right around the time the new album comes out in April. :) It’s going to be a great year for NIN and I can’t wait to kick it off with what may be the best HD release to date. :D kami 01-04-07, 12:05 PM Great to finally see a release date. Should be up for pre-order soon. NamesJay 01-04-07, 12:21 PM Dang, they never include "Heresy" in their playlists. superklye 01-04-07, 12:37 PM Dang, they never include "Heresy" in their playlists. They played it once in 1994 (or 1995...it was the same tour, I just don't remember the exact year) and it was awful live. I have a poor-quality bootleg of it and even through the static and far-away sounding quality of the boot, it STILL sounds terrible. It's just one of those songs, like so many other NIN songs, that just doesn't translate to a live setting well. :( Odys 01-04-07, 01:04 PM Any word on whether it will have TrueHD? No mention of any audio on the NIN website. superklye 01-04-07, 02:10 PM Any word on whether it will have TrueHD? No mention of any audio on the NIN website. Yes, it will have TrueHD and I want to say DTS-EX as well. There was a post by Rob Sheridan, the manager of the band as well as the man in charge of a lot of the art direction as well as video direction and creation of all of the Halos. He's basically Trent's right-hand man. Anyway...Rob said over on the fan club message board that TrueHD WOULD be included. I'll see if I can dig it up. superklye 01-04-07, 02:25 PM Just found this about the content: Full technical specs for all three formats will be detailed soon. The summer stuff was shot sporadically with home video cameras (consumer HD cameras) from Hartford to Mountain View, and is cut together AATCHB-style with shots from many different shows. It is far more raw than the slick, high-def production of the Winter tour feature, partially because the consumer HD cameras didn't take very well to the NIN lighting assault, and created a great deal of compression artifacts in the footage. This is not something you will really notice if you're watching the standard DVD on a standard TV. On the HD formats though, you'll see a considerable quality difference between the Winter and Summer footage. Still, we felt it was worth including, and it has an interestingly different feel to it than the main feature. Also: The two music videos and the live stuff from rehearsals are in standard definition with 4x3 aspect ratio, even on the high-def discs. This is because that material only ever existed in standard definition. It all still manages to look pretty good on an HDTV though. And I can't find Rob's post for the life of me, but someone asked the audio formats and someone else replied with this: He already said it would be Dolby TrueHD 5.1 @ 48 kHz / 24 bit sampling rate (for both the Blu-Ray and the HD DVD), which I assume hasn't changed. There will also be Dolby Digital stereo and standard 5.1 tracks on all three formats (plus a DTS track on the DVD). I assume the bonus content won't be HD audio, though...? thewretched22 01-04-07, 04:43 PM Thanks for posting the audio formats. I'm definitely going with the HD DVD now as i can get TrueHD sound. superklye 01-04-07, 04:59 PM Thanks for posting the audio formats. I'm definitely going with the HD DVD now as i can get TrueHD sound. No problem. Nice screen name. ;) |
