View Full Version : Has anyone else lost connectivity on your "Made for iPod" car stereo?
roland6465 09-27-06, 07:04 PM I updated both my iTunes and iPod firmware two weeks ago. Two days later I added an Alpine CDA-9857 with iPod docking cable run into my armrest. My iPod doesn't recognize that it's connected and vice versa. Battery doesn't charge, stereo doesn't recognize an iPod is connected, etc. Three other iPods have cued up no problem, and the only thing I can figure out different is that I have a 5th generation video iPod that's been updated to firmware 1.2.
I have seen on Apple's discussion boards that some folks with Mopar, VW, and Honda have also had problems. I have talked to "lead techs" at Alpine and Apple, but they only want to blame each other. Meanwhile, I've got a 600 mile road trip this weekend and I'm stuck burning a bunch of CDs.
Anyone else having problems since updating your iPod? Anyone have a good # for Alpine? Anyone? Anything?
I have a 9857 and an iPod 60GB video, I've kept iTunes up to date, but haven't done anything on the firmware side for about 2 months... Guess I won't be upgrading my firmware (;
I'll double check what my current firmware rev is at though, since it's basically identical to your setup.
I have the same Alpine HU and a 60 GB 5G Ipod connected. I don't remember when I last updated the firmware.
I've had this excellent combination for 4 months and no problems so far.
Yeah, I'm running 1.1, and just got the download 1.2 message, so I guess I'll pass for now...
Have you tried rolling back to the 1.1 firmware version?
roland6465 10-04-06, 03:16 PM Whoa...what a coincidence there's replies today.....After uninstalling, reinstalling, wiping the iPod clean, restoring, reimporting, losing hair, and almost punching my laptop, my wife is now the happy owner of a slightly used black 60GM 5G iPod that may or may not be compatible with her Mustang's Shaker 500 system, I haven't ordered the adapter yet..
I've got a new 5.5G 80GB now that after 4 hours of sweating through the first sync, works like a freakin' charm on my new 9857. Gonna be great for the drive & tailgating at the NC State/FSU game tomorrow night to have 400+ albums and shows right there on a solid connection!
What's your firmware version on your 5.5?
alicia4065 10-05-06, 04:59 PM I have the 60gb video ipod and Alpine 9856 with the latest firmware on ipod and have no problems at all and sometimes I use my Nano with no problems either.
dylster 11-27-06, 08:06 AM Just hooked up an Alpine 9857. Using my 5G 60GB video iPod (with latest update) with it. Everything's flawless, BUT...I can't navigate back to the main iPod menu ("Playlist/Artist/Song, etc."). I can quick search if I hold that button down, but just pushing it (as the manual instructs) does nothing. I've reset the 9857, altered some Shuffle settings on the actual iPod, re-synced the iPod...with no luck.
Anyone have a clue how to get this button to work? Or should I just take the head unit back? I'm clueless...
dylster 11-27-06, 02:12 PM Just solved my own problem:
Problem (recap): Just installed an Alpine 9857 ('06 dble cab) and connected it to a 5G 60GB iPod (video). Everything worked great, but I couldn't tap the "double folder" button (Alpine's term) and see the main iPod navigation: "Playlist/Artist/Song..".
Troubleshooting: reset the 9857 (twice). Ensured that the iPod was not set to Shuffle or Repeat. Reset the iPod (twice). Still couldn't get the iPod nav' to show up on the 9857 screen.
Solution: Figured out (finally) that Alpine's "M.I.X." feature was turned on, and preventing the iPod nav' from showing up. To turn M.I.X. off, tap your radio station preset buttons...should be #'s 5 and 6. The 9857 screen will read, "M.I.X. OFF". Now tap your "double folder" button again. The iPod main nav' should now appear.
roland6465 11-28-06, 05:57 PM Good job! Does your 9857 leave your iPod in Repeat All mode every time you disconnect it? I can't figure that one out, but it sure is annoying as hell whenever I get to work and only have a couple of songs left on a playlist or album and all of a sudden it starts over.

Hmm. I'm only a few days into this, and haven't found that to be an issue...or I just haven't noticed. Thanks for the warning. If I find that's happening, we'll troubleshoot it.
Commander iPod 04-27-07, 07:19 PM Today I picked up my new (06) Commander Limited after having the iPod Mopar installed at the Jeep dealership. It would stay connected for a minute or so, get fuzzy and then blast me with heavy static. Always. I live in Idaho in a mountain resort, so maybe that has something to do with the satellite connection, but whatever it is, it sucks. I'm taking it back if they can't figure out the problem. Anyone else with this problem? Other iPod solutions, like Kensington? I'd love to hear about it. This cost $240 with installation. I'd rather have something internal to the car itself and not dependent on the atmosphere, etc. like the CD player.
