Splotto 03-06-07, 03:33 PM this is the exact reason why I haven't bought the HD DVD drive for my 360. There's no way I could sit through an entire movie and listen to that fan the entire time...and it's 10ft from me...not as if it's sitting right next to me...
I thought the sound was coming from the XBOX itself, not the HD DVD drive. I will have to double check tonight when I get home.

it is...I was saying that because the console itself is so loud that I can't justify adding the HD drive

Looking forward to it.
Jamey F 03-06-07, 08:08 PM How would one control lighting, TV stretch modes, receiver surround/video blank modes, etc. while watching a movie in the "dvd soft button area"? Do you have to switch areas in the remote, or is it possible to have buttons placed in the DVD area to control functions from other components? Essentially this gets back to the customization of the page layouts I know. And, I know the customization of harmony isn't up to what other remotes can do, but how are people doing this?

You're going to have to switch areas for the most part. You can do some customization because you can add any device and button to an activity but you're not going to get all of the options in one nice neat place. The moral of the story is that with the H1000 you'll never need to pick up one of your original device remotes but you can't compare the customization to that of remotes that cost twice the price.

Too bad 90% of the Blue Ray movies look so poor in MPEG2. I have both systems and so far most Blue Ray editions of movies fail to look anywhere near as good as all of the HD DVD movies I have watched so far.

Lol, my vote for ignorant post of the year. Using MPEG2 over some of the newer stuff means only the file size changes (it increases), not the quality of the picture. This has been established here a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago.
If you see a difference in the visuals of the same quality source material on different formats using the same TV, the problem is your player or your eyes.

So, how do you switch areas without using an activity? Is there an easy way to jump from the DVD soft buttons to the Receiver or TV soft buttons? How fast is the remote at jumping from one device menu to another? I would hate to be watching a movie, then click "watch TV" just to change the aspect ratio, or to "listen to radio" just to change a surround mode.
Currently, in my "dvd area" on a Pronto Neo remote, I have a soft button for a macro that jumps to the first input mode then cycles to the second; a "full picture" setting; and a button that can change audio surround mode. So, assuming the 1000 can change aspect ratio like my macro, I only need three buttons. If it can't do the macro through some smart state work around (which probably wouldn't be best), I'll need four buttons. My lights I might try to control from the hard buttons on the 1000. But, I don't know if my lights are worth spending two of the hard buttons. So, back to my follow up...how hard is it to switch from one device to another and back again?

You don't need to switch devices. You can have multiple pages of buttons within the one activity, so all you would be doing is switching pages...never actually leaving the activity.

You get my vote for ingnorant poster of the year! I have both systems with a state of the art 1080p TV hooked up componenet and HDMI Do you, I seriously doubt it with a stupid post like this. MPEG 2 and AVC and other compressions schemes are different in more ways than just file size. There are pluses and minuses to each. There are also so many other factors that affect picture quality during transfer. Sony has done a very poor job controlling the quality of many of the Blue Ray transfers, which has also been "established here a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago". I should have expected such a fan boy reply from the tone of my original post.

as for the tangent on BluRay vs HDDVD... it's off topic but I will admit that I have both in my home pumping to a 1080i and I am a Blu-Ray fanboy. The problem right now is that there seems to better standards in the HDDVD camp that makes all their titles beautiful while BluRay is a bit mixed. Talladega Nights, Superman and Ice Age were amazing on BluRay but Crank wasn't much better (very washed out) than standard DVD.

Thanks Remote for your viewpoint. This is an aside, so I will try not to hijack the thread. I like the PS3 and think BD will eventually get their act together, but it sux right now where you have to go to a forum to see if the BD movie is even worth buying. The quality control right now on the transfers is very poor. I have not seen one bad HD DVD yet. The only thing I don't agree with on your post is that I was not impressed with Talledega Nights which seemed to have way too much noise in the picture for me. Almost every CG movie I have seen on BD is incredible with Ice Age being the best CG movie I have ever seen, almost pixel perfect. Now sound is another story as I have been very impressed with the lossless sound of BD. IMHO it has been more noticible an improvement over a DVD than the picture quality on many BD disks.
Back to the real thread --- Is there any hope of getting you to test out a Z-wave dimmer or two with the H1000?
well the distributor that all the stores I have spoken to in Ontario use has the remote locked to be only shipped to Future Shop and Best Buy (not sure how long). TigerDirect has it at an even larger markup then FS and BB. I'm still trying to get one for a reasonable markup.

well for what that's worth, Crank was an exceptional SD transfer. While the movie was mildly entertaining, the disc itself is of reference quality. If more SD discs looked like that, I wouldn't even think about HD or BR

Unfortunately not in the immediate future. I decided when I got the H1000 to pass on the wireless extender since I expected it to be the same as my recent experience with the monster AVL300. Sorry. Now I'm knee deep with the UEI NevoSL and the URC MX900 with MSC400 that I won't be circling back around to the Logitech for a while.

From what I've read, each device has it's own set of pages that are set. The button layout can't be changed, and the number of buttons or pages of buttons can't be changed. The only thing that can be changed is what each button does and what each button is labeled. Is this correct? If so, I'll have to sacrifice buttons in the Watch DVD area to change aspect ratio, surround modes, and lighting.
Timebeing 03-07-07, 06:26 PM Any one having issues with the Logitech RF extender and the 1000.
I want it to control my TV on off, (samsung 52in LCD) since the IF sensor for it is hidden, but the Blaster on it is not doing anything. (have not tried the individual transmitters)
Also do you always have to update the RF extender every time you make changes to the remote. its kind of a pain to have to un hook and unplug the RF extender take it to the computer and update it so i can make minor changes to my remote. Seems to be more of a pain then its worth.
Lastly anyone also having the disappearing button issue with a S3 HD-Tivo. I make changes to the activity and all kinds of buttons disappear.
TivoRules 03-07-07, 10:45 PM The RF Extender does work, but indeed you have to download the latest changes to both the 1000 and the RF extender every time you update your remote. To make things worse, at least once a week my 1000 RF indicator tower icon “freezes” on (as if it is transmitting the last key press endlessly). At that point the 1000 is as useless as holding a piece of burnt toast.
Taking the battery out to reset the 1000 doesn’t help. Only walking to the computer and updating both the remote and the RF extender solves the problem. I haven’t yet seen anyone else post the same issue. It happens when using the “hard” button cursor pads. Hopefully the next software revision will address the problem.

I have the same issue. The tower icon is yellow (the glow is shows generally when transmitting) and the device is locked up at that point (I have an RF extender).
However, taking the battery out resets it for me.

I think you need to use the individual transmitters. I did not know there was an overall blaster in the RF unit. Yes you have to update both, which is a bit rediculous. You think they would actually download the entire set of commands for each device to the RF unit and then simply require an update if you changed devices. Lastly the disappearing buttons on the play/pause screen is a known bug and has been reported to Harmony. The absolutely horrendous quality of the programming for this remote is really hurting Harmony's reputation in the industry. Especially where they are now trying to sell to the upper end consumer. It is almost like they don't even use their own equipment. They better fix these problems fast.

Hello:
I have not contacted them yet. It has happened 3 times so far and I am trying to isolate the user activities which might be causing the issue.
I do recall that it happened once after the unit began issuing double commands (page down on the PVR jumps down 2 pages).
Still gathering data.
I will say that I am not as happy now as I thought I would be with the 1000. I am beginning to miss the form factor of the 880/890. I think I like real buttons better then the touch screen. I also think the response time for the 880 was much faster then the 1000.
I ordered a 890 and I am going to play around with it and the RF extender. With the 890 I will get the 880's form/shape with the RF output of the 1000. That may be my sweet spot.
The 1000 may be relegated to either my office or the bedroom with the 880 (cracked screen) going back for a repair and use in another room.

Cherokee180c 03-08-07, 01:17 PM Is the RF extender slowing down your 1000? You may also want to check your inter key delays. I have a lot of issues with this remote, but they are all software related. My 1000 is faster than my 880 when using IR. I can barely get my fingers to the buttons faster than it sends the signal and is ready for a new signal. It is actually fast enough to have no issues with using the 3x or 4x fast forward commands on my HR20-700 DirecTV DVR. Now if they would only let us put skip forward and skip backward on the darn play pause screen.

did you try going to activity>troubleshoot? there is an option there that will search the harmony database to see if they have updated codes to your tv and there is also a troubleshooting wizard that will allow you to adjust the delays on the time in between commands.
doc63 - the HD-XA2 is in the database but there is no way to control the PS3 with the Harmony or anything else because it uses Bluetooth (not IR)
yatchaks 03-10-07, 01:33 PM I have the MX-850, and have been using their software for a few years.
I have been tossing aroung the idea of buying the 1000, simply for a new "toy".
I tend to fall asleep on the couch nightly. Both my TV and pre-amp have a sleep function. On the device remotes, the tv will sleep in 60 minutes with four presses of the sleep button, and the pre-amp requires pushing the sleep button twice.
I have programmed my MX-850 "sleep" button to do all the above actions with the push of one button which I placed on the Tivo side of the remote.
Can I do this with a Harmony?
Thanks,

Cassius 03-10-07, 02:00 PM Kid Red, I'm not sure exactly what kind of "features" you'd want to retain from the Harmony, but I've been using the HomeTheaterMaster series for years with much success. The MX650 is a fantastic option, and can be programmed to be activity based, just like the Harmony. Until Harmonys can be programmed off-line, I won't touch another one. that being said, this 1000 model is a nice piece of hardware.
Angel, I did a Nevo SL install a few months ago for a client, and I absolutely LOVED the remote at first. It wasn't until we lived with the thing for a while that I began to hate it. The WiFi is the biggest flaw - and without rock-solid WiFi, to me, it loses $500 worth of functionality. Definitely not worth the money; but it is an amazing remote, if it's properly programmed/maintained (including a DEDICATED 802.11b network).

hey mark, pretty sure the answer is no. the harmony remotes cannot allow a single button to do multiple functions like the universal complete control's or setup macros and such on buttons like the universal. I have a harmony 1000 and am returning it for this reason, it is extremely limited. their may be a tricky way to do this with the harmony software but i'm not aware of it and don't like having to do so much trouble for a simple macro. after using the harmony for a few weeks its just very obvious the touchscreen is not as functional as a hardbutton remote. this is not a big deal if you don't tivo or use your system a lot, but when paying this price range for a remote i'm guessing we all use our remotes quite often

Very true. When using a tivo or cable PVR the difference between the forms is most obvious.
This is not a knock against Harmony/Logitech. the 880, 890 and 1000 are all great remotes. It's simply a matter of personal preference.

I'm experiencing the same, every now and then I can do an activity without problems, but more often than not it will freeze at the screen that says it's running an activity.
I can use the remote no problems when just controlling individual devices.
Jamey F 03-11-07, 09:25 PM Ok, I'll bite. I found one on fleabay for $299 + shipping that I couldn't turn down. I figure if I don't like it I can resell it and only loose $50 bucks or so in fees and shipping. I'll be trying it out hopefully next weekend, and I'll be sure to bring a view point back to here that isn't from a perspective of previous software.
Just so I can get it right in my head as to how I'll be programming it to do what I want it to do I have a couple questions that haven't been answered to my understanding yet.
1) The biggest concern...It's been mentioned that commands from other devices (TV aspect changes, lighting, etc) can be added to an activity area like the watch DVD area. Can these commands be put on any "page" of soft buttons or do they have to have their own page inside of an activity? Please anyone, chime in on how soft buttons are added, deleted, moved, etc. ESPECIALLY when it comes to adding a soft button from lighting or TV functions inside the soft button area for watching a DVD. On virtually ANY touchscreen remote, you can add any button anywhere with any command. How will the Harmony 1000 differ if any?
2) For changing inputs on TVs that do NOT have discrete input commands, will the Harmony 1000 remember what input the TV is on even when the system it turned off, or will the Harmony try to cycle through the inputs each time the system is turned back on? I have a Toshiba 56x81 TV that when channel+ is pressed input is changed to tuner, then video 1, 2, 3, component 1, component 2. Currently I'm using only component 1 and switching through my receiver. I may add an Xbox to component 2 since my receiver is out of inputs. I'm hoping the Hamony will remember that it is on component 1 each time I turn everything on and off, and ONLY try to change inputs when I occasionally play xbox 360. I would hate for the remote to change inputs every time I cut on my system. Anyone have a similar situation that wants to comment on how their harmony is treating this?
How are you getting the xbox 360 to turn on with the 1000? I am having a bit of an issue with my 360 going on.

howardbuck 03-11-07, 11:13 PM Logitech released firmware version 4.5 last Thursday (no notification) which has a bad bug in it. Certain activities will completely freeze the 1000 when selected. I spent two days on the phone with technical support to troubleshoot the problem. A new firmware version is supposed to be released on Tuesday.
Also the 1000 now uses the delays that are programmed in. This may cause long startup times when selecting activities. Some TVs will now delay up to 15 seconds on startup. You may want to lower this value.
On the good side, some of the "grayed out" buttons have been fixed. In particular, my TIVO button now works.

technically you can control Zwave with the 1000 as is, however there is a update coming "in march" which should make it much more user friendly.
Anyone talk to Logitech today and see if the update for the freezig issue was released?
Any one using the 1000 with a Lexicon MC-12 surround sound processor?
I'm thinking about getting either this remote or the Philips Pronto TSU7500 and I am curious as to how well the 1000 controls the MC-12 especially in regards to the mapping of the 12 inputs and 6 surround modes which all have their own dedicated buttuns on the Lexicon remote. I would not want to lose this direct access.
Also I have the Lexicon triggering 3 Bryston amps and 2 of those triggers are manually controlled via the remote at my discretion but in order to activate the triggers I first have to put the remote into a seconday mode via the 'Zone2' and 'Rec' buttons before the triggers can be controlled via the 'Mode +/-' buttons. For example, the 'Zone2'+'Mode +' button combination turns the first trigger on while the 'Rec'+'Mode +' button combination turns the second trigger on. Hitting 'Zone2'+'Mode -' turns the first triger off and 'Rec'+'Mode -' turns the second trigger off. I was wondering if the 1000 is flexible enough that if I create an activity (say Watch DVD) which I always have all of my channels in use when playing a DVD the 1000 would be able to send the appropriate commands and then in sequence activate both triggers?

alindley 03-14-07, 01:18 AM I recently purchased the 1000 and have been spending some time getting it tweaked for my environment. I got into the Favorite Channels option tonight and set up Favorites for my Watch HDTV activity and my Watch ReplayTV Activity. On the Watch HDTV activity I use my HP LCD TV as the tuner and it is set up using the Watch TV template. The Favorite Channels show as a Heart in the upper right corner of the main screen and it works as expected. On the Watch ReplayTV activity which was set up as a Watch PVR I do not get the Heart but do get a Button named Favorite Channels which takes me to the Favorites page. However, once I get to that page I can not get back. The back arrow in the upper left is always highlighted and not active. I have to hit the Activities button and then go back into the Watch ReplayTV activity. Anyone else experiencing this with other PVRs out there?
vancouver 03-14-07, 03:36 PM Logitech released firmware version 4.5 last Thursday (no notification) which has a bad bug in it.

Just got off the phone with "level 2". They expect a fix in a couple of weeks!!! thats right..WEEKS! They have send me an old firmware version to use in the mean time. Version 4.5. Before I install it and find a whole bunch of old problems can someone confirm if this version is ok?

There are other problems with the PVR activities on the 1000. For instance you can not add custom buttons from other devices to the soft screens or the play/pause screen loses all the buttons. It does not surprise me if the back button does not work on it. It is almost as if they just threw this thing out there for all the users to do their beta testing for them ala Microsoft. It would not surprise me if the programming group did not even get the hardware until a few weeks before release at best. Funny thing is this is becomming the norm now with electronic goods instead of the exception. The hardware technology is changing so fast that the software programmers do not have enough time to get it right before release. My HR20-700 DirecTV HD box was almost unusable upon release and has been updated at least 12 times in a few months.
I would definitely recommend calling Harmony and make sure that the exact bug is documented properly so that it gets on their bug fix list. It would really help if somebody from Harmony would be on this forum to let people know what is going on. I was on a HR20-700 forum where one person was interfacing directly with the DirecTV and almost every item was taken care of and prioritized. It really helped to have them feedback what you could expect and when to expect it.
Steves55 03-14-07, 06:28 PM Just picked up the Harmony 1000 at BB & attempted set-up last night.
Set up for my CD player, VCR, TV & Dish network HD-DVR went off w/o a glitch. I haven't even got to my Sony BD player yet.
Then we get to my receiver- a Denon AVR 2807.
Software regonized the model, ran through the set-up but when you press watch PVR- box comes on, TV on & Denon AVR sits there dead in the water. I get the screen that says "is it on now?" over & over & over pressing the button. So I go to the troubleshoot menu & asks if denon uses 2 buttons to control on & off on original remote- which it does. So- I go through the whole process of learning the 1000 w/ my Denon remote. At 1st click- it reconizes the on button & on 1st click, reconizes the off. I finish the session, unplug remote from laptop & try again. Same thing- won't turn on the Denon AVR. I've downloaded the latest update from their website & tried again. Same thing.
Thoughts?
Leef DaLucky 03-14-07, 10:06 PM Does anyone know what the native rez of the Screen is?
Is there a max size for backgrounds etc?
I've got mine and currently it's charging..of course, i'm downloading all the icons and stuff while i wait patiently. Looks pretty nice though. Hope this software works with Vista (7.1/xp at this time of this writing). I see others have had success though, already, so i'll keep my fingers crossed.
darn sexy.
It's smaller than I thought it would be.
And slimmer as well.
One-handed surfing shouldn't be as hard as I was led to believe.
did i mention how sexy this is?

I read on another forum there is sometimes an issue w/ the Harmony 1000 & AVR 2807. They suggested I enter the AVR 3806 instead of the 2807 & the remote will reconize it.
Guess what? Worked like a charm on 1st try!!!
mikethewxguy 03-14-07, 10:51 PM It's sexy...but I'm about to throw her up against the wall and then return it (if there are any pieces left to salvage!).
I cannot for the life of me get both the 1000 and the wireless RF extender to update completely. I can get one, but then the other won't update...
I've been working on it for nearly a week now...
I'm a long time 880 user (and before that a longtime Pronto user) - and I just puller her out of the desk drawer a few minutes ago and remembered that I really never had any problems with her and I actually felt kinda foolish for going after the sexier 1000.
I guess I'm having a mid-life "remote" crisis...
I don't even know if the 880 will take me back now :(

try doing a manual update. You can do it here logging in with your user name and password.

How do you like the 2807? Are you feeding it any 1080p signals over HDMI? I have a Yamaha 2600 upstairs and am now doing a theater room. I was going to buy the Yamaha 2700, but they reported some HDMI issues and the Denon 2807 is so much cheaper. Glad to hear it works great on the 3806 setting. Are there any commands missing?

I love the 2807 so far. I hate the remote that it came with but the 1000 will take care of that. I was worried to death that the AVR wouldn't pass 1080P & audio but it works on mine perfectly!!
I have the AVR 2807
Dish Network HD DVR
Sony Blue Ray BD-S1
JVC 1080P 56" HD-ILA
I'm using HDMI cables.
I've heard others say they have re-loaded the 2807 on the 1000 & it works the 2nd time. I'm only setting up basic stuff- not every single button so I'm not sure if I
've lost any function yet. I haven't loaded my CD player yet & I think I'll set up the 2807 for that & see what happens. I'm going for 1 button function w/ a few options. If I want to get crazy- I'll use the remote that came with it.
It must remain wife proof.

Thanks, I have a similar setup with the DirecTV HR20 HD DVR and the PS3 for the BD player. I also have an X360 with HD DVD drive. I plan to drive both the Mitsubishi HC5000 1080p projector and a soon to be purchased 42" 1080p LCD flat panel in an adjascent room with the same HDMI signal simultaneously. I would really like to find an affordable unit with 2 HDMI's out, but I guess I will have to buy a powered HDMI splitter instead.
Jamey F 03-16-07, 11:14 PM Ok...so I just received my 1000 today.
The way the remote defaulted to handle my input switching was AWEFUL. The remote changed the input for every device REGARDLESS of what it's input status was. My toshiba doesn't have descrete inputs, so...that meant a flawed input change on startup without a 10 second activity, and a 5 second activity once everything was turned on. I called Tech support and about 20 mins of on hold it works as needed. Now, it doesn't change unless the TV is on the wrong input, which will be a rarity because I use my receiver for 95% of switching. Chalk one up to tech support.
Once that was out of the way, I was able to worry about the ergonomics and remote abilities to control my devices. I've spent a few hours tweaking it to working how I would like it to work. The biggest problem is that the remote I'm leaving (Pronto Neo) was neither very well designed or well functioned IMO. It's kinda like I'm starting just past square one. The remote is decently thought out, but the software needs LOTS of work to allow for more customization. It was WAY TOO EASY for the tech support to change the way my input selection works. He told me I couldn't do what he did on my own. That is just wrong IMO.
DarkKnight2k4 03-17-07, 01:47 AM Does the 1000 control subwoofers with a remote like my Velodyne ?
Cyber Chulo 03-17-07, 06:55 AM For the people that have this remote, how long does the battery last? I've traded up from the Sony RM AV3000 to the Harmony 1000. So far, the battery only lasts about a day and a half before I have to recharge it. And this is with the backlight and duration set to the minimum. Is this normal or do I have a faulty battery?
Wow! I left the unit in the charger for 2 days and now it's been lasting for more than a week through every day use. This unit is AWESOME!
P.S. It still has a full battery charge!
Jamey F 03-17-07, 03:21 PM Does the 1000 control subwoofers with a remote like my Velodyne ?
If it has a IR remote, it should. Also, a question I could never understand for sure is that ANY IR command from ANY device can be added to ANY activity so long as you have that device included under the acivities used devices (easy to do).
The only catch I'm running into is that certain pages don't allow for adding buttons. So, you have to add the command to either a hard button (not desirable) or add it to the additional buttons page (still not perfect).
So, I ask...is it possible to add buttons to the default page of an activity, or at least rename and replace the buttons that are there? It seems I can change what the buttons do, but not rename them.
vancouver 03-17-07, 03:51 PM anyone been able to disable the tilt sensor? I have it dissable in the Remote settings but the screen still pops on every time a I move it?
Number 543 on the glitch list?
DarkKnight2k4 03-18-07, 03:23 PM [QUOTE=Jamey F]If it has a IR remote, it should. QUOTE]
Ok, but how ?
What category ?
Jamey F 03-18-07, 03:31 PM Velodyne HGS-15 and HGS-15BGII are listed with a brief search I did. So, yes it does control subwoofers like Velodyne and I searched by looking in home appliances, but I'm assuming you could find them in any category.
vancouver 03-18-07, 04:06 PM Can I ask that the next time someone braves the Level 2 wait on hold to please ask the tech support to answer these two questions.

So, I ask...is it possible to add buttons to the default page of an activity, or at least rename and replace the buttons that are there? It seems I can change what the buttons do, but not rename them.
You can only change the functionality, I believe. It seems Logitech is not in a hurry to expose the potentional of this device. For example, I'm using a JP1 remote to create my macros (involving multiple devices) so can learn and attach them to a single button on the 1000. That's just a shame. It'd be nice to be able to completely change the layout, make the buttons bigger (they must have done user studies only with small-handed people), and what not. Still, it's a pretty darn nice remote, albeit expensive.
Jamey F 03-19-07, 08:53 PM Yea..I was thinking they couldn't be changed. I, also, find the buttons too small. The remote can become cumbersome to switch pages so that you can get to the command you want. It is a bit rediculous to not allow us to at least pick templates for button layout for each activity and to rename each button. It's obvious the remote is using a template for each "page" (play/pause screen, number screen, favorites, etc.).
This remote totally rocks for it's current ability and future possiblities. But, as the current software allows, it's much less than it SHOULD be. I'd love Logitech to open the configuration a little bit.
I called tech support yesterday about an issue with my DVD player not turning on and off like it should. For some reason, the button for leave on all the time was pressed. I had gone through the troubleshooting 4-5 times and answerred the questions it asked correctly each time. I only got the fix when the tech told me to answer a question wrong. I explained to the tier 1 tech I spoke with yesterday, it would be much better to allow users to access more features in one spot. Having to go through trouble shooting menus or dig past 4-5 pages of settings makes it harder to fix problems.

This is the approach I take with my 880... Unless they add a feature I "need" (doubtful), I wouldn't mess with what is working.

that's my general line of thought as well, but rumor has it they fixed the greyed out buttons on the 'play' screen...sure would be nice to have that resolved. I'll have to weigh the pros and cons I suppose. The last few updates have been flawless for me....but I tend to get nervous once I have a lot of customization...would take forever to redo it all....
Gino AUS 03-21-07, 07:38 AM why would you need to redo it all? does a firmware update lose your previous settings?

remoteshoppe 03-21-07, 09:43 AM Will this control advanced features on my comcast DVR box? Like On Demand or setting up recordings?
Yes. The easy answer is if you could do something with your original remote than you can do it with the 1000 or, for that matter, any remote at this level.
PLincoln 03-21-07, 10:46 AM why would you need to redo it all? does a firmware update lose your previous settings?
only if something goes wrong and you have to delete an activity or something in order to get it to work again....

bobby james 03-21-07, 05:24 PM Just a couple more questions.
1. I use my Xbox 360 to watch DVD's, will I be able to control all the DVD functions?
2. Is there a way to find out if my components are compatible with the remote?
Jamey F 03-21-07, 07:49 PM 1) I'm not sure, but I would assume so. Harmony makes an IR remote especially for the xbox 360. I have a 360 and I can test it out for you.
2) Harmony used to have a trial software to do a mock setup. I can't find it on their site now. I haven't seen a single post in any harmony thread that I can remember that said they couldn't find their device or couldn't learn from the original remote. The database they have is huge.
The biggest question you need to ask yourself is if you will like the remote when someone else has setup the pages as they see fit...not you. There isn't much customization of graphics available YET. I and many hope they will change that.

2. Is there a way to find out if my components are compatible with the remote?
1) works on my 360
2) it's a learning remote, so I see no problems with any component you have. if the source your using isn't in the logitech database, you could always use the learn function.
What you can do is goto BB, pick one up and play with it for a while. BB has a 30 day return with no restocking fee on remotes.
bobby james 03-22-07, 02:33 PM I think I'm gonna get this from amazon saturday. I already downloaded the channel logos. Can anyone with the 1000 post some pics of something other than the home screen? I would really appreciate it.
Jamey F 03-22-07, 06:12 PM I keep ready on Harmony literature that I can arrange mybutton placement on my "custom" pages by leaving fields blank, but no matter how I try it, I can't seem to get the buttons to stay in the correct spot. For instance, if I want just three buttons down the right column, I should be able to put in button commands for spots 3, 6, and 9. But when it shows up on my remote the buttons are still in spots 1,2 and 3.
Anyone know how to place buttons where you want them while leaving other spots blank?
Steves55 03-22-07, 07:04 PM Well-
I've had my Harmony 1000 for less than 2 weeks & I'm less than happy!!!!
Yesterday- I go to use the remote & none of the touch screen buttons on right half of screen work. I fiddle w/ it for a couple hours- even reloading the software & same exact thing. Seems to work for awhile & then it doesn't.
I lay it on the coffee table & I see a diagonal line across the screen I couldn't see when looking straight on at it. Upon further inspection-
THE FRIGGIN' SCREEN IS CRACKED!!!!
How the heck are they gonna warranty a cracked screen?
Better yet- how did the screen crack? Kids haven't been over yet so it's the wife & I only (in our late 50's) & we are gentle as can be- or she's not fessin' up (yet).
I bet I'm out a $500.00 remote.
If I replace w/ the 880- can same settings from the 1000 I have saved on my computer work? This thing is waaay to fragile.
My stomach hurts.
Jamey F 03-22-07, 07:15 PM Call Logitech support and ask them to warranty it. I don't know they will warranty it, but wouldn't assume they won't until you've heard it from them SEVERAL times. No way I would accept a 2 week old remote with a cracked screen unless I dropped it off my roof or beat it with a hammer. Normal use shouldn't crack the screen, and should be covered.
Steves55 03-22-07, 07:44 PM I'm too mad to call them now. I'll do it when I cool off tomorrow.
I have 5 grandkids & they haven't even been here yet!
I seem to remember a post in here somewhere about a cracked screen.
I'll look for it later tonight- over a double single malt on the rocks!
I still can't imagine how it cracked- unless the wifey leaned on it w/ her elbow, fell asleep on couch & it wound up under her- or something.
For $500- it should be more rugged than that!!!
I've been handling it like a raw egg & the wife is scared to death of it.
wcaughey 03-23-07, 02:36 AM Zwave implemented yet?

My stomach hurts. :eek:I'd ask Logitech to swap your 1000 for an 880 under warranty. You're only going to be paranoid about breaking the 1000 again, even if they fix it for free.
And if you do get a new, different model Harmony, it's pretty easy to transfer your 1000 settings.
From the support FAQ:
The remote software will automatically convert your existing configuration to the correct format for your new remote. To ensure that the conversion is complete, please follow these instructions:
Install the latest software onto your computer.
Login to your account.
Click My Remote and follow the instructions to download and run a connectivity check.
Update the remote.
StevenZ 03-23-07, 08:09 AM Zwave implemented yet?Last month, they told me April for z-wave. I posted the full list of promises here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9686618&&#post9686618).
vancouver 03-24-07, 10:36 PM I am new to Harmony controls for forgive me for asking. I now have the 1000 and am really looking forward to ording in a bunch of Z wave products. Can some please let me know what the functionality will look like when it does come? Will it be an activity, or a device or what? Whats its like on oher Harmony remotes that work.
StevenZ 03-25-07, 09:05 AM First, you link the remote to the various z-wave modules, so that it knows they're there.
Next, online, you establish "scenes". One might define, say, track lights at 50%, desk lamp at 25%, and so on.
Finally, you map scenes to activities, like Watch TV and General Dim.
You can map any scene (combination of any modules at any settings) to any activity.
One of the biggest oversights is that Harmony has no concept of an "Off" activity. So once you've turned on a bunch of lights by selecting one or more activities, pressing "Off" doesn't turn them off. You have to invent a new benign activity and map an All Off scene to it. With my 890, I end the evening with "Lights Off", then "Off". Annoying, but workable.

thanks for that. Lets say you prefer to have the lights set differently then your "scene", what is the manual light adijustment like. Is it just like going to the device page?
vipercompany 03-25-07, 12:54 PM I have the harmony 1000, does this control Insteon lights? If not then I will use Z-wave when it comes out. But will I be able to do the following?
Currently when I click Watch DVD this is what happens:
Projector On
Reciever On set to Intro DVD input
HDMI Switch set to Input 1 (Intro DVD)
Intro DVD on
HD DVD on
Intro DVD Play
Then after 2 minutes (the length of the Intro DVD) the following happens:
Reciever switches to Input 2 (HD DVD)
HDMI Switch set to Input 2 (HD DVD)
Intro DVD Off
HD DVD Play
Now, Is there anyway I can make it do this:
Projector On
Reciever On set to Intro DVD input
HDMI Switch set to Input 1 (Intro DVD)
Intro DVD on
HD DVD on
Intro DVD Play
Ceiling Lights dim to off
Sconce Lights Dim to Scene 1
Then after 2 minutes (the length of the Intro DVD) the following happens:
Reciever switches to Input 2 (HD DVD)
HDMI Switch set to Input 2 (HD DVD)
Intro DVD Off
HD DVD Play
Sconce lights Dim to Scene 2 (a little lower than scene 1)
Then when I click pause I want the ceiling lights to go to scene 3 and the sconce's to go to scene 3 (scene three will be a little brighter than scene 1).
When I click play to resume I want everything to go back. Ceiling lights to off and sconce's to scene 2. Is this possible?
Jamey F 03-25-07, 01:02 PM I think the max length of time is like 20000ms or 20 secs for the maximum amount of delay except for power on delays which is 60000ms or 60 secs. So, NO...you can't with a 2 min delay between commands. Other than that, I think you could probably work it, if everything is IR.
Also, currently there is no way to have "macros" inside activities. When you click pause, you're going to pause...that's all...UNLESS you learn the chain of commands with the learning ability, which may not be easy, but it should be doable.
IMO, look elsewhere until Logitech desides to allow for more customization. Perhaps a MX-3000 would be perfect in your situation, but I've never used one.
vipercompany 03-25-07, 03:50 PM I currently have it do the 2 min delay by using the 10 second delay 12 times in the advanced set up of "watch DVD". But do you guys think its worth it returning the 1000 for the mx-3000? the mx 3000 would be about 150 more.
Jamey F 03-25-07, 09:11 PM I have the 1000, and I think it's a great remote for most people (including myself), but in your situation, you may be happier knowing you can program just about anything you want into your remote. I'm considering selling my 1000 and trying the MX-3000, but the list of things I can't do with the 1000 is small compared to the amount of effort that would take. If I would have it to do over again, I would look harder at the MX-3000.
IF logitech would get it's act together and provide a more stable and customizable software for the 1000, I wouldn't consider the mx-3000. It's frustrating having/using a remote that I know could be 10x better if Harmony would just open it up a bit.
drew138 03-25-07, 10:05 PM Well-
I've had my Harmony 1000 for less than 2 weeks & I'm less than happy!!!!
/conscience
Sounds to me like the LCD started flickering intermittently and the screen got cracked during shipping to Logitech for warranty support
bobby james 03-26-07, 12:28 PM Ok, it just arrived in the mail today and it looks nice! 2 quick questions though:
1. Is the demo supposed to be running while it's charging?
2. I have a Motorola 3416, should I set it up as a PVR or a set top box?
Yes, demo runs during charging. I had better luck using my Motorola set-top-box as a PVR.
remoteshoppe 03-26-07, 02:54 PM I've set the SA8300 up both ways (pvr and set-top box) and found the same code sets and functions in each. They set up the same way
Jamey F 03-26-07, 05:39 PM I've set the SA8300 up both ways (pvr and set-top box) and found the same code sets and functions in each. They set up the same way
I set up my 8300HD box the same way. Both activities looked identical. When I looked in the sofware, there were VERY different. On the next update, the remote showed the differences and the "TV setting" was much less featured. I now just have a watch PVR activity.
I would suggest setting it up both ways and seeing for yourself. It's not that hard to add and remove activities.
Steves55 03-26-07, 08:27 PM I called them on my cracked screen. No dice. No warranty for "ABUSE"!
I'd like to abuse one of them.
Called the store where I bought it. Told me to bring it in. Gave me a choice of another 1000 for free, upgrade to a MX 3000 (+$300) or get the 880 & store credit.
I got the 880 & $250 store credit. I'm happy. :D
Cherokee180c 03-26-07, 11:00 PM Ok, I finally got my Vizia Z-wave dimmers in, hooked up one and found out the following:
1. Extremely easy to pair although thank God I saw some posts on this first. You do not use the software at all and simply go RF devices on the "wrench" menu than add a new RF device.
2. The 1000 turns on and off the lights fine, but the brighter and darker commands do not work that well. It seems once you hit the brighter it goes all the way up to full bright and the same then for darker. You have to hit the other command to stop it where you want.
3. I can find no way to name the RF devices yet. I believe they just stay Device 1, Device 2, etc.
4. They don't show up at all on the normal device screen.
5. I don't think you can use in any activities yet as they are not a normal device.
Is this everyone else's experience with Zwave devices or have I missed some things?
All in all I am happy for the time being, but Hamony has to get out the new software that lets us configure Zwave devices as normal devices with full activity features. Let me also say that the new version of the software is much, much better than the previous versions!!!! I can now add skip forward and skip backward to my play screen without crashing the whole system. I can also add soft buttons from the TV onto the PVR activity as well, so great job Harmony. Please keep improving this sofware, as the 1000 has a ton of potential if you will just release it!

they way you describe it is exactly they way Logitech said it works at the moment. As I undrstand it there is an upgrade coming to make it better, but by better I have no idea to what level.

They really need to make them regular devices and all will be good! For instance, I am sure the brighter and darker commands do not work properly because of some timing or hold button issue, however, I can not adjust any of the settings to get it working properly. I have rudimentary control, but that is it.
bobby james 03-28-07, 11:39 AM How do you turn the remote assistant off?
anam8tr 03-28-07, 04:50 PM How do you turn the remote assistant off?
settings, remote assistance off. (hit the wrench on the top right of the remote screen)
Gino AUS 03-28-07, 08:28 PM I've tried turning off that remote assistance a number of times, but it keeps coming back.... anyone else experience this?
Also, tried updating to latest firmware, I'm able to run 1 or 2 activities without a hitch, until I try doing a third it freezes. Really becoming a PITA
Shizelbs 03-29-07, 08:19 PM I placed my order for a Harmony 1000. Should arrive early next week. I'll likely write a mini-review and photo document the whole process.
vipercompany 03-29-07, 09:24 PM hideflifestyle.com has a really good deal on the harmony 1000, $349 for the remote and $94 for the IR blaster. Here's my post from the great found deals forum:
Harmony 1000 remote control at HiDefLifestyle.com (http://www.hideflifestyle.com/harmony-1000-p-674.html?zenid=8982bd8aeeb3575e67ddfa958dee8b46) for 349.99. You must enter coupon code H1000C to receive $150.00 off of the original 499.99 price. Also the RF wireless extender is only 94.99. The shipping was $10.00 for everything. Also they shipped out the order the same day and I received it two days later. Extremely Fast!!
Order 3/14, Received 3/16

It comes back on every time you download to the remote again. It is the first thing I turn off after the download is complete. Seems to me we should just be able to set the software to remember to keep it off. It is these type of annoying things where Harmony programmers think they know better than the customer that truly keeps Harmony from living up to its potential.
OnlyOne 03-29-07, 10:48 PM Can anyone tell me how to reset this thing? Taking the battery out doesn't do it.
I had a level 2 tech about to walk me through it when my phone died.
Gino AUS 03-30-07, 12:41 AM Next time it freezes, hold down the off button, then remove the battery. Wait 10 seconds, while still holding the off button, put the battery back in, it should boot to safe mode. Connect it to your PC, load the harmony software and login. Go to downloads and firmware, and update the firmware.
Smarthomeusa 03-30-07, 09:50 AM I see you guys are looking for a good price on the Harmony 1000

you can also buy the remote from us on amazon for the same price, you just have to dig a little to find our price (as we just started selling there)
I suspect we are all about to become moderated :P
Smarthomeusa 03-30-07, 10:49 AM Oops.. apologies to the admin if I shouldn't be advertising price on here. I just wanted to extend our special pricing to everyone here .. I advocate saving of all pennies .. and we wanted ot beat every online price we could find for this remote. it surely is a gem!
scottwin 03-31-07, 01:29 PM At this point I would say avoid buying this remote until Logitech can work out the bugs and upgrade it via a firmware upgrade. The firmware I downloaded 2 days ago still didn't correct my issues.
I purchased it at Future shop for $599 around Mar 10th (before it could even go on display). My main complaint with is it has a very slow touch screen response. I'm surprised more people haven't noticed this. If you hit the Activities button, it takes sometimes 1 sec to bring up the list. Same thing for device screen, paging screens both devices & activities. Basically it seems that the wonderful colour screen is great but it doesn't have the juice to power the refreshes quickly enough. This delay was really frustrating and I could not live with it.
I uploaded a picture from my PC, and the detail is quite amazing. However the slide show that is available on other Harmony's isn't functioning on the 1000 yet. This is disappointing since the slide show would be a great conversation piece sitting on the cocktail table and displaying pics much larger than whats available on the 880.
I'm moving from the large Sony remotes with touch screen so I was looking for something easier to work with. My main problem with the Sony was the lack of hard buttons and the difficulty for other users understanding how I had it programmed. The lack of hard buttons on the 1000 is also a problem, however this could have been overcome with a quicker touchscreen response. The other thing I didn't like about the 1000 (vs. the Sony) was the inability to program macros, however this is common to all Harmonies I found out.
The ergonomicas isn't that fantastic either. I like the feel of the 880 much better, the 1000 requires 2 hands to operate really. The design of the 1000 is quite nice but not worth the extra $350 over the 880, IMHO.
So, I'll be returning my 1000 and have already picked up the 880 in its place. However, this reminds me of another problem I didn't like for upgraders. The Logitech site doesn't allow you to upgrade your 1000 remote and keep all of your components set up. You'll have to re-enter everything and reprogram all of your activities. It would be nice it you could copy all of your devices & activities over to the new software.
Also, I picked up an 880 for evaluation and I noticed that the programming software for the 880 does allow you to upgrade to a new remote. This isn't possible with 1000, I had to go back into my other login for the 1000 just to be sure. I guess they think if you buy the 1000 at this point, there will be no point in upgrading anytime soon. Boy are they wrong, now I'll have to re-program everything again, if I decide to keep the 880. My first impression of the 880 is night and day better than the 1000, if you don't consider appearances. I'm sort of a tweaker, so I need to jump around quite a bit and I think I'll be just fine using the activity screens' additional commands. This led me to another observation/flaw with the 1000. When you're in an activity and you want to go to the next screen, you can only go down (say from screen 1of3 to screen 2of3), you can't go directly to screen 3of3. With the 880, I noticed you can go both ways. So what I've set up so far with the 880 is the main activty screen has the common commands I need for that activity, then I set up screen 2of3 for common "audio" related tweaks I'll perform, followed by screen 3of3 for common "video" related tweaks. This way there's much less scrolling for the command I want. I just hit the right button if I want to tweak audio, or hit the left button if I want to tweak the video.
These are the little things you'll never discover until you have the actual remote in your hands, but everyone's tastes are different so what I don't like, others may be able to live with. Just don't believe all of the hype from a company's web page, and be sure you can return it if you're not satisfied by it.
Sorry, I don't need any RF capabilities so cannot comment on that part of this remote. Any other questions let me know.

lots I agree with. The lag between puching a button on the remote and getting to a new screen is very anoying, and you would assume it would be an easy fix. I still cant reduce the lag bewteen pressing a button i.e. and the volume acutally changing on my processer. Even after going through all inter key setting etc, and talking to level 2 tech support the final anwer was "its a problem engineering is aware of.
No Z Wave (or at least very poor at this point), poor botton response, poor inter key response, long wait times for customer service (shouldnt 1000 owners have a direct number to level 2?), Cant change the tilt sensor to go off, screen turns on even when just touching volume, freezing issues, programed buttons and commands dissapearing, screen light not turning off if you adjust via it on the remote itself, Metal texture on the hard buttons impossible to clean.
Save yourself the time and hastle. Dont buy this remote until/if a firmware comes out which fixes even the most basic of issues.
Yours truelly

vancouver 03-31-07, 03:48 PM well rather then just complain I thought I would call Logitech about all my issues. Here is the response
1.) Z Wave - An updated is due at the beggining of april, but no confirmation if it will add Z Wave functionality. Strange?! you would assume the people releasing the firmware update would be aware of what it does. no?
2.) Inter Key Delay - Aware of the issue, but no word on the fix, "maybe next firmware"
3.) Tilt Senosr Shut Off - While the option is available in the software "it does not work in the hardware, and no word of a fix, if any". Great add a feature or setting which does nothing. Smart.
4.) Sluggish delay bewteeen softbutton screens - The tech guys said " I agree, its slow, but no word on a fix or upgrade
There you have it. Logitech admits to a crappy product, and promises nothing with respect to fixing it. I am getting a survey emailed to me and I will post it if possible.

That's funny! I felt the same way.
Seriously though, thanks for the confirmation Vancouver. I was beginning to wonder if it was just me (or just my remote) with the horrible lag. When I spoke to cust service (1st level only) he indicated no one had complained about the lag issue before, at least your guy agreed there is an issue.
I'm really surprised by the poor quality Logitech put out with this thing, they missed such a wonderful opportunity to hit a homerun with this thing. It's got the looks but not the brains. I guess they aren't ready to compete with the >$500 crowd just yet. After using the 880 I don't even know if I'll try the 1000 again, even if they work out the bugs and bring the price down. I really enjoy having buttons you can feel, and I like the layout and the different shapes they put on the buttons so you can get a good idea where you are. And if you get lost the backlight is almost always on, but not too bright that its a distraction. I also found the 1000 too bright even at its lowest level (and the 720 for that matter).
PS Hey how did you feel about them dishing your boy Markus Naslund on HNIC last night? Or perhaps I shouldn't assume your a hockey fan. If you are, at least your team has a playoff spot locked up, unlike my Leafs who have to grind it out to the bitter end, as usual.

Theoretically this can be done by just changing the activity. I say theoretically because in order to make sure this works seamlessly you need to make sure that the H1000 has the discrete codes for all your components or you are at the mercy of the SmartState Technology. If your devices aren't all using discrete codes you can increase the activity of the SST by unchecking the option that turns off all other devices when not in use.

You can use two activities, or you can add in enough delays to do it all in one activity. I recommend the first. Either way, you don't want to jump from one device to another. That's why activities are there. If you need commands from another device, you can add them to the additional buttons page under an activity. In rare instances, you may substitute them for buttons elsewhere inside the default page your activity displays or to a hard button.

Yep, beats me... it has been perfect for the last few days now. I've tried running it through its paces too, switching between different activities within 30 seconds of each other, running different commands in each activity, all perfect.
I'm planning on refining things further, but am very paranoid it will start freezing again, oh well, gotta bite the bullet.

You can have it power up or power down anything you want, pretty much any way you want. The only thing you can't do yourself, is set the order in which devices are turned on and off. For instance, you can have your remote turn everything on and leave everything on no matter what activity you choose. You can have it turn on only those devices that are in use and cut everything not in use off. Or, you can leave some devices off until you use them and then leave them on until you cut everything off. Heck, you can set up your remote to never cut anything on or off.

Cherokee180c 04-04-07, 07:13 AM See my dedicated post, but has anybody gotten the H1000 to work with a Vizia 4 scene Zwave controller yet?
DarkKnight2k4 04-05-07, 09:45 AM You can have it power up or power down anything you want, pretty much any way you want. The only thing you can't do yourself, is set the order in which devices are turned on and off. For instance, you can have your remote turn everything on and leave everything on no matter what activity you choose. You can have it turn on only those devices that are in use and cut everything not in use off. So... I guess I should do the programing differently if I plan to start with the Oppo Intro every time...
Change the activity to powere down the oppo, change my switch and receiver, not turn it on, and let the HD-DVD go as normal. . ...
what do you think ?

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to do, but if I'm understanding you correctly you would need to set up 2 activities.
First you would select "Play Intro" which would turn the Oppo, receiver and display on(or whatever devices are required), and set the correct inputs. It would then start playing the intro DVD on the Oppo.
When the intro finishes you would then select "Watch HD-DVD". This would power off the Oppo(or you could set it to leave it on...your choice), turn on the HD-DVD player and change inputs to the HD-DVD inputs, and then start playing the HD-DVD.
You can't get one activity to automatically call up a second activity, so you would have to select the second activity(Watch HD-DVD) manually.

Actually you can add any commands you want to one activity...thus allowing you to do it with one activity. You'd just have to add an exact amount of delays. There isn't any way for the remote to know when the first activity is over. It would be up to you to know how long the delays need to be.
But, of course, the first way I would suggest is to do it like czzr said. Set it up in two activities. How you cut things on and off aren't really that important. You can choose to turn everything on and start the Oppo, then a second activity would switch inputs and play the HD-DVD, or wait until you need the HD-DVD until you turn that on. I would prefer the second method since a lot of players automatically play movies when turned on. I choose to leave eveything on when I switch activities. Once I'm done, all Harmonies know what has been turned on, so they send a command to turn all of those, and only those devices, off.
DarkKnight2k4 04-06-07, 10:37 AM Ok guys, I will give it a try tonight. Wish me luck.
Shizelbs 04-06-07, 12:58 PM Just got it last night and its already up and running. Its soooo easy to program. I am VERY impressed. Whatever buyer's remorse I might have had is long gone and never to return.
I will be posting pictures and a full review later, but this thing is incredible so far.
It even had the codes for my Chinese CD player.
Shizelbs 04-06-07, 12:59 PM Ok, it just arrived in the mail today and it looks nice! 2 quick questions though:
1. Is the demo supposed to be running while it's charging?
2. I have a Motorola 3416, should I set it up as a PVR or a set top box?
1. Yes
2. I have the same box, and I set it up for both devices, and everything works just fine.
dtsfanoh 04-06-07, 07:03 PM When was the last firmware upgrade on the 1000? Did it fix the issues mentioned earlier in the thread?
Whats the best price out there now? I have the 890 now (owned the 880, etc.) so dont need the RF extender since I have it already...
I am waiting for the 1000 to be $299... or so?
FYI setup on dial up sucks big time! I'm going to just wait and bring it to work to set it up...
shiffrin 04-07-07, 07:43 PM I'm considering purchasing the Harmony 1000, so I downloaded the software to make sure my devices were included.
I did a test run to see how the customization goes and it all worked fine. Now, I'd like to erase everything and start fresh if I purchase the remote. I don't see any way to do that. There is no option to start over. I also tried through the web page and it is the same.
Any ideas? Do I just delete each device? Do I have to sign up for another logon ID?
airman210 04-08-07, 10:18 AM I was all ready to buy the Harmony 1000 until I read a review by J. Ramsey on amazon.com. In part, it stated:
"...the colored default touch screen buttons that are professionally laid out by Logitech are in fact permanently labeled. So if you choose to change the function of any colored button, the old default name must remain painted on top of your "custom" button ... However, you can customize additional pages of ugly buttons to your liking, but [B]they will be black and white buttons laid out in static tic-tac-toe fashion."
Does anyone know if this true? If so, I don't see where this remote is worth $350.
Also, can the 1000 handle the following?
Two sequential OFF commands required to power down the Optoma HD72 projector.
Multiple specialized commands for HTPCs such as DVD Menu and Recorded TV on the VAIO VGX-XL2.
X-10 protocol and/or Insteon dimmers. And will the RF output of the 1000 communicate with an X-10 transciever module such as the TM-751?

That is correct. At this time, you can NOT change the text for most buttons, and you can NOT place them in any other location than default. You can NOT change their color or size. There are "customized bottons" in the setup that allows for the creation of extra pages of buttons, but their the only extra customization is the fact you can lable the buttons what you want.
You have to determine if it's worth it to you. I paid $299 + shipping for mine. It was worth that price to me. I've had very little issues with mine so far. I can control anything I have in my system that I can do with the remotes provided by the manufacturers and then some. The only thing I can't do that I know of is a double "Play" function that is needed to play my DVR in slow-mo. I've tried learning in Raw, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It is possible, but I just can't get the timing down right.

vancouver 04-09-07, 10:57 PM Anyone hear any news about the update to improve Z-wave control? When is it due?
According to level 2 tech support it was due the first week of this month. That, like every other promise with this remote, did not happen. I wouldnt expect it anytime soon.
shiffrin 04-10-07, 10:20 AM Either.
The problem is that when you run the test drive, you can't get to the screens to delete devices until after you connect the remote control. Since I don't have the remote, I can't connect it.
I guess it doesn't matter since I decided to go ahead and order it anyway. However, it is still a pretty stupid design to have a test drive but not be able to reset it and start again.

Harmony is becoming a smoke and mirrors company. The Z-wave implementation is pathetic so far on this remote. The remote can not even properly raise or lower the brightness on my Vizia dimmers even though on/off works fine. I bought the dimmers from smarthomeusa and they have been trying for over a week to get a simple answer from the engineers at Harmony as to whether the 1000 can interface with the 4 scene Vizia controller. Come on idiots, this is a simple yes or no answer!!! I personally doubt it can do it as you need to not only add the scene controller to the network, but then copy the device configuration back into the scene controller for to include only the devices you want to control with the scene controller. The worst part of this entire mess is that all they had to do was enable one single z-wave feature as a stop gap measure until there programming was done. This is to simply allow the H1000 to be set up as a secondary controller on a z-wave network. Then I could program the entire network properly and get it all working with the leviton remote and simply execute the commands via the H1000. At this point I am so frustrated I am going to ditch the idea of using the H1000 at all for lighting control and move onto a dedicated Z-wave lighting controller.
Warning to anybody looking to use this remote for Z-wave lighting control. Avoid any Harmony RF unit like the plauge until they get their crap together, which I bet is another 60-90 days away at best. They won't even answer simple questions honestly either because they simply do not know what they are doing, or worst yet, because they know that the functionality is not there and are simply lying about when it will be there!!!
Will the 1000, or any other harmony remote for that matter, work w/any other lighting control devices? Or is it only z-wave that is a problem?
Jayson
remoteshoppe 04-11-07, 11:49 AM There are several IR converters that allow you to use any IR remote to control other lighting protocols:
IR543 mini controller controls X10 & Insteon via IR
The Monterey Instruments IRUPB Module allows you to learn up to 48 IR codes to control UPB modules

My warning was for Z-wave only. Implementation currently does not allow for proper use at all, at least with the new leviton Vizia Z-wave dimmers. They register fine and turn on and off fine, but do not brighten or dim reliably. The scene controller does not work as well, as far as I can tell and Harmony has had no response to our questions. Not to mention that Harmony has not adopted the proper Z-wave protocols and IMHO should not be Z-wave certified currently, as you are really stretching it to say it works. I imagine the issue is more of a political issue for Zensys to be able to claim that Harmony is a certified partner. Harmony for their part appear to be simply clueless at the present moment! Again, I hope all this changes in the next few months as I have bought this system on faith and faith alone on Harmony's ability to fix the software. The hardware is fully capable of delivering a good Z-wave interface, but Harmony's record on quickly fixing programming issues is questionable at best.
As for any other IR based dimmers (Lutron Maestro, etc) you should have absolutely no problem programming the remote directly from the database for that device or worst case learning it into the system.
Jamey F 04-11-07, 05:36 PM However, it is still a pretty stupid design to have a test drive but not be able to reset it and start again.
You wanted a test drive. I find it very "par for the course" for the test drive to be stupid with all the stupid things the normal update software does.
Just finished reading the posts to date. Thanks to all who took their time, particularly those
that reported the facts they found without the bellyaching. I'm a software developer and
sympathize with the rigors involved in perfecting such a product. Some posts here say
"I'm glad they're delaying the release" and other posts say "we're unofficial beta testers."
Some posts say the tech support guys spend hours on the phone, and others call them brainless.
As always the truth is somewhere in between. Supporting this many devices has got to
be non-trivial . . . which is likely the reason the competition costs much more.
Anyway, my 2 cents, and if you're a Logitech developer reading this, go ask your manager
for permission to post, and if he/she says no, send them to cluetrain-dot-com.
Come on in, the water's warm. We'd like your perspective.
Now for a question... I have nifty XM icons ready to upload, by my "Listen to XM" activity
doesn't have a "Change Favorite Channels" entry. Am I missing something?
Has anyone else set up their receiver to use XM channel favorites?
Do I have to fake the thing out and call it a TV or something?
shiffrin 04-15-07, 11:19 AM I've had my remote for a few days and have some comments and questions.
1. I can't do an update from the logitech web software. It runs to about 9% on the progress bar and then gives an error that the firmware is returning an invalid RegionIDs. I've sent them an email about this error.
2. I've noticed that the web software is different from the PC software - it has features for turning off the remote assistant and slide show capability that the PC software doesn't have. Someone earlier in this thread said that the slideshow hasn't been enabled yet in the firmware. If this is true, why does the web software have the option?
3. When running the PC software and I click on help, I get a network timeout every time - the additional info says that it is trying to communicate with 172.17.192,21. When I ping that address or try a TRACERT it can't be found. I've also sent an email about this error.
4. I keep getting a battery low warning even when it has been in the cradle overnight. I keep it in the cradle all the time when not in use. Some here have mentioned a battery charge indicator. Nothing in the book mentions this. I guess it must be that bar that is obscured by the Help button at the top of the activities screen. When it is in the cradle, there is a little sine wave symbol at the left of the bar. The right side of the bar (after the help button) is empty indicating that it doesn't have a full charge.
5. The web software indicates that I should see a clock on the display. I don't see one - is this another of the things that hasn't been enabled by the firmware? The PC software has an option for clock display (12 or 24 hour) but I don't see a clock on my screen.
My PC software is version 7.1.4 and the firmware is 4.6.1 I believe these are both the latest levels.
shiffrin 04-15-07, 05:14 PM I've been doing a lot of testing this afternoon and have answered some of my own questions.
1. Updating from Logitech web software:
This was due to the Windows XP firewall. When I disabled it, the update worked. Normally the firewall asks when a new program tries to access your computer, but it never prompted for this. Does anyone know what I should put in the Firewall settings so that I can leave it on?
2. Slideshow not enabled:
This was confirmed by an email from Logitech - should be in the next software update.
3. network timeout:
Still can't solve this one. I contacted Comcast (My ISP) and they say they do not use any proxies, so I can't update the logitech software for that. Has anyone else solved this problem?
4. Battery warning
Apparently the battery must be firmly pressed down into the 3 contacts in the compartment. Even though it appeared to be making good contact, it must have been slightly loose. When I pushed it against the contacts, it seemed to make a tiny click sound and the problem has gone away.
5. clock on display:
Should I be seeing this clock?
Cherokee180c 04-16-07, 07:15 AM Has anybody heard an update from Harmony on when they will have real Zwave support in their software? First it was the end of March, then it was the beginning of April, now we are past mid April and still nothing.
I have the 1000 had it for about a week now (still fiddling with it ) seems to work fine with all the 360 functions.Overall i'm finding it an excellent remote.
What am I doing wrong? I even hard programmed the power button but this remote will not turn my 360 on/off
From what Im reading in the 880/890 forums is that Logitech has removed the ability to run other commands within an activity from ALL remotes? For example having the lights come up when you hit pause or lights dim when you hit play. I saw it was noted that was missing in the 1000 but it looks like it is now missing in the 880/890? Is this correct? Thanks
I read in the logitech forums, in a logitech post, that they intend to put that
functionality back in an upcoming release ... not sure when.
shiffrin 04-17-07, 10:34 AM Reference my previous posts on my questions about my 1000.
3. Network timeout on PC software when trying to get to Help screens. Am I the only one having this problem? Can others see the help screens without getting the timeouts?
5. Clock on display. Does anyone have a clock displayed on their 1000? If so, how did you get it to work?
Jamey F 04-17-07, 04:18 PM 3) Help screens really aren't that helpful. In fact, the only time I used it to try to solve a problem, answering questions accurately would NEVER fix my remote. Only answering INCORRECTLY would give me the option to correct my remote's problem. You are better off getting in touch with Tech support or posting a problem here.
5) No clock is on the 1000 at this time as far as I know. Many have posted abotu this in this thread.
Shizelbs 04-17-07, 06:36 PM Would it be stupid to suggest that we get an official/stickied list of RF devices that have been confirmed to work with the Harmony 1000 remote?
shiffrin 04-18-07, 03:23 PM I have a programming question on the H1000.
I have an A/V receiver that has multi-zone capability. I followed the Logitech suggestion and created 2 devices - one for the received and the second for the same receiver with (Zone 2) in the model number. This seems to work.
However, I want to create an activity to turn on music in Zone 2, but it insists on turning on the Zone 2 receiver and turning off all other devices. This means that if I am watching TV in Zone 1 and run the Zone 2 activity, the remote turns off my TV and HDMI input. I can't find any way to get it to turn on the ZOne 2 capability and leave all other devices alone.
I tried adding the regular receiver as a device but in this case it insists on turning on both even if I just want music in Zone 2 and nothing else.
Any suggestions?

There is a choice somewhere in the remote software to disable the turn all other devices off when you switch activities. I am on travel right now and do not have access to the program. I normally have this off as a default as it can cause many out of sync problems if anything ever blocks the signal when switching activities. I leave any equipment turned on during activating an activity on the entire time until I send the all off command at the end of using my equipment.

I'd sure like to know where that option is. I checked both the PC and the web software and didn't find it. I did a search in their knowledge base and the FAQ and didn't see it.
I'd appreciate it if when you get home and have some time, please take a look and see if you can find it.

Jamey F 04-18-07, 08:54 PM You have to select that option within each activity under advanced setup options. For instance, if you want to leave on your CD player while watching DVD's, you would select leave unused devices on inside the DVD activity's advanced setup options.

Let us know if you find it, but I will look sometime over the weekend when I get home. I think you will like the system better with this option turned off, as I sure do. I find I do not switch between activities that often, but when I do, I might be switching back and forth a lot. I also have a Yamaha RX-V2600 2 zone receiver and switch back and forth a lot in the summer because my zone 2 is the speakers on our deck. This lets us listen to music out on the deck while my son is playing the X360 or watching a movie in 5.1 DD inside. I have no issues switching back and forth between each zone receiver with the shut off all other devices option turned off.

Just log into your account. Choose an activity like "Watch DVD" > Settings > Select "Change Options" > It will be the second option on the page. You'll need to do this for each activity one at a time

That is interesting. Mine is doing the same thing, but I was pretty sure it was because I had to wipe out the RF network settings to get the Zwave dimmers to work, so I figured it wiped out the RF extender, which is also Zwave. I am waiting for the update before I add the RF extender again and try to use for the 9 zwave dimmers I have on my network.

How many devices do you have on a single RF extender? I've got 11 devices in our media room and was told by Tech Support that the RF Extender is unreliable beyond 8 devices - I would also have to reconnect the RF Extender every couple of days, until I added another RF extender and now everything seems to work fine.

i have 6 devices on my rf extender. There should be no reason it doesnt work 100%. I should never have to reset/reconnect my RF extender.
p.s. not sure if you are aware, but there color of your text is almost unreadable
O.k. it's official, I'm not having fun!@$%
Is anyone using this with a Mitsubishi hd1000u? The software has me learning remote commands and other fun stuff and it still won't turn off or on my projector right, never mind switch to the correct inputs. Same think with my exvu 9200. I couldn't even find the select button on the harmony to get it out of sleep mode!
I can't believe the amount of time I have spent messing with this thing trying to get it set up and work properly. I figured all the equipment I have is mainstream and all the remotes would be in the database. I didn't think I would have to sit down and play the stupid learning my remote game.
And this software is such a joy to use over dialup. I have had to drag the hardware into work for a highspeed connect just to get it through the initial stages of the setup.
Even the wireless extender is a pain. The sticky ends don't remain "stuck" so I have lovely pieces of tape sticking them onto my equipment. Looks really snazzy.
vinny2cubes 04-22-07, 12:55 PM I wanted to relate my experience with the Harmony software and a MacBookPro (Intel Core Duo).
Last week I Bit the bullet and bought a Harmony 1000 after many years using a 659. Thought I'd download the latest software. BIG MISTAKE !!! Don't use the the latest software!! Use the disk that came with the 1000. Or download the version on the website specifically for Intel Macs (7.1 I think).
I found out the hard way that you can't just Uninstall previous software by dragging the Harmony software in your application folder to the trash (as per Logitech's instructions). There are numerous files scattered around your system folder that will prevent you from re-installing the right software. The best way to remove it is to do repeated Spotlight searches for "Logitech" and "Harmony" and also "logitech.pkg" files. There may be a "Remotecore" file also. They are in the System->Library->extensions folder and User->Library->preferences folders, as well as other locations. There is also a Logitech folder and Browser folder. Find all of these files and trash them. Empty trash and restart your computer BEFORE trying to re-install. You must find all of them!!!
If you launch the new installer and find that it tells you there is nothing to install, you need to go back and search again for these files. If you choose "Custom Install" you will get a list of the files it wants to install. If they are greyed or dimmed out and say "skip 0 Kbytes" that means the installer is still seeing the Harmony files somewhere in your system. Search again and RESTART.
Needless to say, the process did not go smoothly. After nearly 2 hours on the phone to a nice guy in level 2 Tech support I managed to get the right software installed. But, when it launched and started checking the internet for updates I ran into another roadblock. The Harmony software appears to be downloading updates, but when it finishes and tries to relaunch itself you will get a strangely worded warning that you "Don't have permissions to alter the application, or you have a Firewall blocking the download." First, click once on the Harmony application to highlight it and hit Command- I or control click and select "Get Info" which brings up the Info window. At the bottom check the privileges and make sure you (as the administrator) have "read-write" permissions. Also, go to your router and check that your firewalls are turned off. I didn't have either of these set wrong and Tech support was stumped as to why this message was appearing. I even went to a Starbucks Tmobile site, as well as a friends house and used their wireless without luck. No firewall. Same error messages.
Bottom line: It doesn't work on my Intel Mac. Tech support sent me a message this morning that saying that they are reviewing the problem and that there is a software update (7.3 I think) that will be out shortly to fix this.
Gave up on the Intel Mac and decided to see if it worked on another Mac. I have an older Mac Mini (non Intel) and went through the same process trying to get it to work (same wireless network). I finally had sucess, but with several other problems. The software will install a Ethernet Adapter EN2 into your networking preference panel. You must pay careful attention to the dialog boxes that pop up at the end of the installation. You must go to the Networking Pane and Choose "Network Port Configuration" and then check the en2 ethernet adapter. MAKE SURE you hit the "Apply" button after you do this!!!! Why Logitech has to use a Ethernet adapter to communicate with a USB device confuses me.
Restart your computer.
I don't know if the following is a bug or not: Always start the Harmony software BEFORE you plug in the USB attached to the remote. ALWAYS unplug the USB cable BEFORE you quit the Harmony software. If you leave it plugged in you will get a message saying the USB device is drawing too much current and the port was disabled. I screwed this up and it took several restarts before I got it to talk to the remote again. I've also decided that on some Mac's it's better to plug it directly into the computer and not into a hub or the keyboard. This seems to avoid the USB power messages.
Overall, I do like this remote. It's very sleek and easy to use once you set it up right. There are numerous tweeks you need to make with the timing of commands but those are fairly easy to change. Their Tech Support guys are very helpful and patient but getting ahold of them is sometimes a long wait.
vancouver 04-22-07, 01:01 PM Just when I thought Logitech hit rock bottom with this remote and they couldnt make things worse...they no longer offer Tech Support on Sunday.
Mind I guess they probably said "we cant fix the problems, or know when we can so lets just go home".
Anyone have problems updating the extender?
Right now my keeps freezing at 25% and says it is updating region.....

Make sure all firewalls are off. The program is incompatible with even zone alarm. It also will not work sometimes due to the server being too slow.
Cherokee180c 04-23-07, 01:01 PM Come on Logitech where are you? The H1000 update to address Z-wave issues is over 1 month late now and the controller can not even raise or lower the brightness on my (5) Vizia Z-wave dimmers not to mention the fact that you can not even set up the scene controller. I basically have a $500 paper weight. Avoid this remote if you want Z-wave control!!!!
Thanks for the suggestion. No firewall even installed. No mater what I use for updates, it freezes at the region update portion. I can't even get the extender to enter into Safe Mode that they suggest to use to reflash corrupt firmware.
O.k. I figured out how to get it into safe mode, but still freezes part way through at the region update...
Cherokee180c 04-23-07, 07:57 PM Man guys, I am sorry to keep harping on this, but I wish Harmony would simply put out an emergency fix for the Leviton Vizia Zwave issues. Do you think any Harmony representitives or dealers actually read this forum? I have (6) Zwave dimmers all registered and functioning fine on the remote, except for the brighter and dimmer commands, which basically do not work. Not much good to have dimmers you can not dim! At least I can turn everything on and off currently. Come on Harmony fix your flagship remote already!!!
I just received the remote in the mail today to replace my 676. I loved the feature on the 676 that allows for storing dvd and cd titles in the remote (for megachangers). It doesn't appear that this feature is included in the 1000. Does anyone know for sure? Does the 890 include it? Thanks everyone.
Wiluven 04-24-07, 12:19 PM Does anyone have any specific information on the warranty of the 1000? I can pickup a Logitech 1000 for $280 bucks but it's not from a store. I know it's in 100% working condition but you know how things go...
Does Logitech provide warranty work on everything or is it like Yamaha where you have to buy from a certified store?
Just got off the phone with Harmony support (after about a 20 minute hold). He stated that the media function will be available thru a firmware upgrade, but he had no idea when. Apparantly, this is considered a "luxury" function and is low priority, so it sounds like it could be a while. The Media function is available on all other Harmony Remotes. Looks like I may return this and go with the 890, since I have a Sony 400 disc DVD changer, for which the built in interface to access dvd's is cumbersome at best. I love the media feature on the 676.

Ug, that's bad. Fortunatly, I can still return my 890 because I have not opened it yet. I hope. Are there any Z-Wave capable remotes that do work with Leviton Vizia dimmers and scene controllers?
In the Monster VAL300 a branded 890?
jarcher 04-26-07, 02:11 AM I just had an idea... The Vizia 4 button zone and scene controllers have an IR port and there is an optional IR remote to control them. I would think most people using an RF remote probably have a RF to IR converter of some type.
Is it possible to program the remote such that RF commands can be sent through the RF/IR bridge to a scene controller? I know this is a nasty hack, but maybe it could be an acceptable workaround until Harmony gets their act together?

My understanding of the problem is that the scene controller needs to be first registered on the network, which is not really a problem, but then needs to have the entire network segment that it is controlling downloaded into the controller itself. That is why you can have a very large number of devices controlled with the scene controller, but you only have a total of 4 different scenes for those devices. The problem is that Harmony made no provisions in the current software to follow the Z-wave protocols for reading and writing to other devices. That is why the remote can not function as a secondary Z-wave remote right now as well. If Harmony had simply enabled that function, I would at least be able to buy the Vizia RF controller and set up the entire network and then just use the Harmony to trigger the setpoints. The only way I think your hack would work is to buy the Vizia or other compliant remote to set up the entire network including the scene controller, and then just learn the IR commands for the scene controller into the Harmony remote. The problem with that solution is that you only have control of enabling (4) scenes with no individual light control. I am pretty sure that the 4 scene controller already comes with the IR port that you have to remove something to expose, but I would check with Leviton to confirm.
At least now I have full control over every individual light, with the exception of the dimming comands. I found two crude work arounds for the dimming problem. First is simply set the dimming level to where you want manually and then just turn on and off the lights from the Harmony, which is not the best solution. Second is a better solution, but is just a pain. You give the light the off or on command and then send a brighter or darker command while the light is ramping up or down to stop the light at the level you want. This is not as hard as it sounds and works fine until they actually fix the timing of the brighter / darker commands. I know it is just a timing issue, as they work partially. I am still sticking with the Harmony solution for the time being until they update the programming to make Z-wave work. It is nothing but BS right now to claim these are Z-wave compliant remotes as the programming does not work for Z-wave properly at all!!!

My understanding is that the Monster AVL-300 is a different remote all together, but it shares the Harmony database through a partnership with Harmony. The layout of the remote is very close to the 890 and it may share some of the parts (screen?). Monster, though, definitely took some base software and made their own software that they program. My understanding is that their OEM branded dimmers are actuallly made by Leviton and so they are 100% compliant with the cheaper Vizia dimmers and scene controllers. Supossedly the Z-wave programming is top notch and it works well, although I have never seen it. My only concern with the Monster remote is that if it does not sell well, will Monster really stay in this market segment in the long term. I am still hoping that Harmony gets it crap together, or I am bailing on them big time. I already own and 880 and 1000 and was going to replace the 880 with an 890. If they continue to put out crap software, I am gone.

Simply slide it to the side. It takes a bit of strength and is actually a reall nice design since it never opens when you don't want it to.

The AVL300 and Harmony 890 were developed together through a coop relationship but you are correct in that they were also further developed independently. Harmony had the database, Monster had the Z-Wave relationship and then the engineers went wild. The Monster switches are Leviton and are excellent quaility. The Z-Wave control is good to very good and Monster is still working on updates to improve it even more - including full scene control. I have seen hints at Monster's road map and would not be concerned about their commitment to this space. The remotes are a small part of Monster overall Control Central plan and since they are as big as they are they can afford to fight retail pressure.

Does this mean tha the AVL300 actually works properly with the Leviton devices, or that it works better than the Harmony remote? My 890 is still unopened and I can probably return it in favor of an AVL300.

How the remote handles the z-wave lighting control. Right now supossedly the monster remote is way ahead of the Harmony's for lighting control. I talked to smarthomeusa again today about what they are hearing from Harmony, and they claim to have a fully compliant update for the 1000 by mid may, which should fix the dimming control and also let me use the scene controller. I will believe it when I see it.

Thanks very much for the clarification and update. I'm not holding my breath. Maybe I'll price out the ALV300. The guy who sold me the 890 (along with the rest of my system) is not talking like he will take it back, but I wanted a second remote for upstairs anyhow.
Hello,
Does the 7.3 release (posted on 4/25) really supports windows vista?

Where is this 7.3? I don't get an automatic update, and when I asked to download the current version, I have 7.1.4 and it asks if I want to get 7.1
wow does harmony support suck!
I received a message yesterday to call back a person to discuss my issue. I call back and they refuse to transfer me to the person that called me. Wasted 1/2 an hour of my day. They said I couldn't have received the message and to call back today.
This all because my extender won't update. A simply RMA is all that needs to be done. They even made me send a screenshot of the error.
creaturex 04-30-07, 07:20 AM Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share our experience with the Logitech Harmony 1000 remote. The review was posted on our website a few days ago, but I can't post a link directly to it because I haven't posted enough messages on AVS yet.
You can find a link to the review on the homepage of the CANADA HiFi website (a few blog entires from the top). Would someone be kind enough to reply to my message and post a link directly to the review? Thank you! The website address is in my signature below.
I currently use the remote in my personal home theatre and I'm very happy with it, although it does have some bugs... but Logitech has said that firmware updates will continue to be released...

m1fuller68 04-30-07, 01:00 PM Anyone using the Harmony 1000 with a Pioneer Elite 84tix? The Pioneer Elite receiver has 4 HDMI inputs and one output. I have my Sat, HD DVD and Blu-ray player connected to the HDMI ports 1 -3. The Harmony sees these ports without a problem. The issue is I have the Xbox Elite with HDMI. I cannot for the life of me remember how to add an input on the Harmony so when I hit the "play Xbox" button it will go to the HDMI 4 input. Can anyone help?

i thnk you are confusing firmware with software. The 7.3 software update did nothing in reagrds to functionality on the remote.
We are all still waiting for Logitech to release a firmware update which will include what you are seeking....and really just make this remote better then a high scholl science project.
Last time I spoke to level 2 tech support they admitted that the support team tested the 1000 before launch and made all the issues we complain about known to logitech. Logitech chose to release anyway.
Shame on you Logitech. Poor ethics.
Jamey F 04-30-07, 11:30 PM Hello,
Does the 7.3 release (posted on 4/25) really supports windows vista?

But I am assuming this is refering to software, not firmware. I do agree, the Z-Wave support is probably gonna require a firmware update.
Cherokee180c 04-30-07, 11:50 PM I am looking for both. The software side should take care of the poor update performance. For instance everytime I need to upgrade both the RF extender and the 1000 the update fails at least one time and I need to do it again. It is normally a 30 minute process right now. I agree that the programming on the firmware side is a joke. I updated my remote tonight just to delete and re-add my projector. It somehow decided my first Z-wave device no longer needed to work after the update. Worst part is that the remove RF device command never resets the device in the remote so you can re-add it again. I needed to delete the entire RF network and add everything again.
wcaughey 05-01-07, 06:48 PM *crosses fingers*.....z-wave yet?
Cherokee180c 05-02-07, 12:47 PM Boy has this thread almost stopped as far as posts go. I keep checking back for updates, but there is not much being posted. These programming issues must really be affecting the sale of this remote, at least with the AVS crowd.
I'm still waiting for tech support to get back to me over my issue with the extender. Until then the whole system is useless for me as my equipment is out of sight.
They were supposed to call me Monday and didn't. At this point I would also probably recommend people hold out for another couple of firmware updates to get things sorted out. I'm quickly becoming tired of the run around.....

From what I hear the remote is still selling quite well. Maybe the 25 pages of posts covers everything. (although I doubt it)

I don't even own one and I'm hoping for an update on the Z-Wave situation. My 890 is still sealed in it's box waiting for me to decide if I am returning it. Construction on the living room has begun and in a few weeks I'll be needing a Z-Wave remote, since the Z-Wave switches will be mounted out of the room.
Life on the bleeding edge.

I think that just goes to show that the average consumer is not up on these issues and does not frequent this forum. As far as I can tell there are way more outstanding problems / issues with this remote in the 25 pages of posts vs. anything that is actually resolved. I probably have a bug list of at least 10 items long by myself.
Don't get me wrong I am still hopeful that the fixes will be forthcoming or I would have already bailed on the unit. It has become painfully obvious that Harmony marches to it's own beat and they can not be counted on when they tell you anything with regard to timing of any fixes.
Bit the bullet and called yesterday. Got tired of waiting. Dealing with tier 2 support now. They seem nicer to deal with and more willing to help out. Will see how long it takes them to get back to me (if they get back to me..).
Cherokee180c 05-04-07, 12:26 PM I wouldn't hold your breath. The level two techs I worked with were good with the current software, but didn't know anything more than posted on this forum about what upgrades were coming and when.
vancouver 05-04-07, 09:02 PM I will be destroying my 1000. Stay tuned for pictures and or video. May do "blender vs 1000" if it fits.
waldo009 05-05-07, 08:09 AM I have finally given up and my 1000 and RF extender will be returned. Everyone in the family has refused to put up with its issues and will no longer use it. It has been the only sour note on my whole brand new system. Was hoping it could have served as a good middle ground to hold off on the expense of crestron but I am tired of it freezing and random control problems.

There are quite a few options between the Harmony 1000 and Crestron so you may want to give URC, RTI or the new Philips Pronto a try.

Jim, what are the options for a Z-Wave compatible remote?
I had the 1000 for about a day. That was enough for me. I am sending it back. My main reason is like a few others posted I just think it is waaaaaay to slow. You hit a device button and a second o so later it responds. That is crazy! I have a MX3000 and Sony Navitus so I am good. I just wanted to audition a 1000 to make sure I am not missing anything. And I guess I wasn't...
Cherokee180c 05-06-07, 09:10 AM Sorry remoteshoppe, but I kind of called this. People are now turning on this remote and bailing big time. I am still hoping that Harmony actually cares about being in business, but my hope is fading. If this is the best they can do on their flagship remote, then they are going to be a low end solution for ever. We are now talking about months waiting for basic software fixes on this remote. Pathetic at best.
I certainly caution anyone looking to buy this remote right now to move on and pass it up. It will not control your system as you would like at the present time. For over $500 with the RF remote, you can buy a system that works well.
Another thing I diod not like was the fact that there was not a hard MENU button. I am used to that with other higher end remotes. I hate having to go into pages looking for a MENU button... But that's just me...

That's a bit extreme IMO, but I would agree that the remote falls far short of what it should be. And, while Tech support usually solves problems, they are slow to get to, AND they can NOT change the short comings of the software. For the life of me, I can't understand why Logitech doesn't crack some skulls and get this thing working as intended.

I don't think I am being too extreme at all. I finished my HT project over a month ago and after spending over $500 on the combination of the remote and RF extender, my system locks up every other day and requires me to pull the battery on the 1000 to reset. After doing that, at least one of my (8) Z-wave dimmers drops off the network and needs to be re-synched to the remote. Some of the time, I can resynch it, but a lot of times I need to delete the entire RF network and start all over again. That is just the beginning of the fun with this piece of crap! Want me to go on, ok I will. At times the response time goes out to 5 or 6 seconds. Just when you think it is locked up, the commands will actually execute many seconds after you pushed the buttons. And by the way, you can not actually brighten or dim any of the z-wave dimmers as of yet. I would say that for the functions intended the remote does not even get a 60 out of a scale of 100 right now for functionality. It is a $500 paperweight right now. So sorry, I am not being extreme, I am just finally getting to the pissed off stage after being very patient for promised software fixes!
Interesting to hear some common issues. I bought two 1000 units w/ RF extenders. I have not had alot of experience with universal remotes and was not sure if my issues were just me or widespread. I think the biggest annoyance is the "freezing up" issue... this happens several times per week. The fix, as others have also reported, is to remove the battery for a few seconds. Other issues that I also notice are random (or not so random) delays in response as well as "additive late responses" such as when one presses volume up without a response then keeps pressing it to get a response... then 3 seconds later it goes to 120 db and wakes the neighborhood. However, despite these issues, I generally like the units. It is a shame the updates are so rare/nonexistant and also I really am so nervous about the tenuous nature of it's functionality, that I don't bother to really try to reprogram it or optimize it. It takes forever to unplug/replug all the equipment, much of it in a hidden AV closet. In short, I'm not returning them (too late anyways) but am so limited in my expectations now that I am not bothering to take full advantage of the units. I suspect my story is not unique.

Glad you could vent. I'm not running into issues that massive, but I'm not using zwave. That was my reason for saying your comments were a bit extreme (at least for me). If I were in your shoes...First, I'd be sending the unit back to Logitech so that you can get a remote that doesn't lock up (hopefully). Next, when they send you another unit (that probably won't be much better for functionality), ask for another replacement or a refund of your purchase price.
Logitech is going to have to get hit with several people demanding functionality as promised or paying out lots of refunds. I think Logitech will be hit with a class action suit if they don't get to work quickly!
Tom Koegel 05-08-07, 12:25 AM I have the latest firmware (I think?--4.6.1) and just did a couple of updates to tweak favorite channel buttons. I notice there is new software (7.3.0 vs. my current 7.1.4). I know that the 7.3.0 software supports Vista (not an issue for me). Are there other improvements or should I stick with the 7.1.4 devil that I know?
FWIW, I had some problems re the bad firmware release awhile back, but really haven't run into too many problems. I have had the occasional lockup that requires battery removal, but the remote is pretty reliable for me. It does seem quite slow to input channels into my Motorola DVR, but the convenience of having a remote that my family can use outweighs the sluggishness. (And I presume if I got energetic I could make it process the commands faster by tweaking the settings.) I am not, of course, attempting to use Zwave or I might be crankiier.
wcaughey 05-08-07, 12:35 AM NYCAVS, did the sticky at the top of the remote control area about playing with some of the settings help you at all with the secondary issue you address?
I really wish a logitech developer (if there in fact any, and if not that would explain quite a bit :-)) would voice something solid on when in fact zwave will actually be implemented, acknowledgement of issues with software, and the reasons why zwave has taken so ungodly long to work out for the harmony 1000.

You are actually quite correct and I was venting! The frustration level is building. There is nothing wrong with the hardware as far as I can tell. Only a pathetic programming department that either a) has too many projects on it's plate, or b) is totally incompetent and is in desperate need of hiring some real talent. Harmony's lack of action on this remote is making DirecTV look like a bunch of programming geniuses with the way they handled the HR20-700 disaster.
porkchop1 05-08-07, 03:01 PM It's taken me some time, but I finally read all 25 pages of this thread. I just got my H1000 (for a customer install) and it sounds like I'm in for a wild ride on the "Logitech Customer Service Express". I made my first call last night, and immediately requested level 2 support (BTW, I reccomend asking for Level 2 right away - unless you're asking how to remove it from the box). I have the same ?'s the rest of you do - mainly z-wave. They told me yesterday not to expect a fix for Z-wave until mid July???
Furthermore, he told me he had a meeting this week with Logitech management and would share my/our comments. I asked him if he could call me back with an answer and he said that Logitech does not make a policy of returning phone calls to users?? Seriously.
I asked him why and he said that there are 210,000 H1000 users worldwide at present and they can't begin to call every user when a fix is going to come out. I explained to him that if they don't start returning phone calls with answers to questions, they'll likely; have a much smaller user base to worry about soon enough.
Anyway, my main question is: Will the H1000 work with a Z-Wave capable thermostat? He said it hasn't been tested but it should. Has anyone tried this?
I'm afraid I know the answer already.
Don't worry, even when they tell you they will call back they never do. I've been told twice they will call be back and I wait and week and then call them back. A third time they called me on a Sunday afternoon and left a message but didn't leave any way for me to call them back. When I tried the level 1 wouldn't transfer.
I guess tomorrow I will make my weekly call.
tomanystraydogs 05-08-07, 03:34 PM I will be destroying my 1000. Stay tuned for pictures and or video. May do "blender vs 1000" if it fits.
Damn You! Just spit RedBull on my keyboard.
porkchop1 05-08-07, 10:04 PM Already an issue - Activities work one time and then devices do not respond at all. Tried resetting/resynching everything only to get the same problem. Anyone seen this issue.
I give this thing a week and then I'm switching up. I played this game already with an 890.

What a joke, now it is mid July. Last week it was May 15th, the week before that the end of April. A month ago mid April. Maybe Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny will get Z-wave working for them as God knows they can't. What an incompetent bunch of idiots! Do yourself a favor and DON'T BUY THIS REMOTE!!!!
Now to answer your Z-wave question. I highly doubt it will work. The standard dimmer interface does not even work right. I can not dim or brighten any of the 8 dimmers on my network currently. They also can not interface to the scene controller that I own as that requires the H1000 to send the network setup back into the scene controller. All this would not be that bad if the remote itself simply worked for A/V equipment without locking up every other day. It is time to ditch this piece of crap on Ebay and buy a real remote.
