I'd assume many are in the same boat as myself:

Tickled 4805 owner with a desire for a true HD PJ that has all the good qualities of the 4805 but with a better resolution...

The HD70 appears to be the logical follow-on. Would be nice to have a thread devoted to this topic...

About the only thing the HD70 does "worse" at than the 4805 is the color bits (8 instead of 10). But, according to some posts I've read, a 10 to 8 bit pic IQ degredation is more along the lines of something "imagined" than real/quantifiable.

I'd like to read specific comments about the 4805 vs the HD70 in the context of upgrading to the HD70...

I've got a HD70 and have not noticed any colour issues associated with the 8bit/10bit problem.

I'm interested in the HD70's longevity. You'd figure there must have been SOME corners cut somewhere in order to pump it out at its very affordable price.

Its a very tempting upgrade even though there is nothing wrong with my 4805 and still is able to surprise me when watching HTPC driven DVDs or HD. The 8bit thing is the only thing that will make me demo it first before buying or perhaps skip it and get the IN76...maybe just wait for an entry level 1080p...who knows.

Can't be any worse than infocus, my X1 suffered from color wheel noise, sent it in and got the upgrade to the 4805 only to have color wheel noise on that in less than 30 days. Sent it back for repair and it's been going good for 150 hours or so.

I look forward to reading the experiences of others who have upgraded to the HD70.

I'm hoping to hear things like "it was worth it" or... "You'll notice a nice change", etc...

The 4805 has been such a good PJ but I may unload it as part of the sale of my house and get the HD70 for a (net) price of $500 bucks. In this context, I'd guess anyone that's experienced the 4805 vs the HD70 would say it's an easy choice... Get the HD70.

Hmm...

That's what I'm waiting (wanting? ;)) to see more of in this thread. I hope past owners of the 4805 (a machine with a great PQ reputation) will post their observations of their new HD70s.

Here's my biggest question:

Is the HD70 noticably quieter than the turbine that is the 4805? I know it sounds bad (no pun intended) but absolute top priority for my next projector is low noise.

the wifey has already OK'd a new projector, as soon as the bulb on my 4805 blows....i'm almost ready to start powercycling the projector repeatedly on purpose...

I just took my 4805 back to Costco yesterday (bad color wheel and dust blobs...was not going to ship to Infocus if I did not have to), I will probably order the HD70 this week, unless Costco makes an announcement about carrying it sometime in the near future. I was happy with the PQ of the 4805, but I think that turbine is the most accurate description of the projectors noise level I have heard yet (although my Xbox 360 drowns it out nicely :) ). I will post a VS review later this week if I order it tomorrow.

That's my situation as well. I love the look of DVD via HTPC using 1:1 pixel mapping in conjunction with FFDSHOW and TT. I'm very interested to know how other 4805 owners doing the same feel about feeding the HD70 via same HTPC.

I know more pixels will make the image smoother. However, DVD has no more [real] pixels to offer and I sit nearly 2x screen width away and will not be moving forward. From this distance, I'm already viewing a very smooth image.

Aside from 8/10 bit color issue, I'll have to move the HD70 closer to the screen (according the Optoma calculator). Since I'm table mounting, that starts to get my table too far ahead of my seats. It would be tight but I could make it work. Before making such changes, I'm really waiting for some more positive feedback from former 4805 owners. I'll want to be blown away before I give up the 4805 and rearrange my room.

Sitting at 2x IMHO will be kind of a waste...if I get a 720P or 1080 I want to sit really close...heck I am almost at 1.7 - 1.5 x with mine depending on the source (dvd or HD).
About the "kids" calling the 4805 a turbine....try getting a Sony W400Q ...that was real turbine! LOL Of course, my PC with the huge Delta 120mm fan (at 152cfm) plus 6 other fans kind of make the 4805 a non issue :-)

Has anyone gone from a 4805 to an HD70... If so, what can be expected?
