View Full Version : Official Bind Buy HD DVD Purchases
Not sure if this Thread makes sense...I'll give it a shot! LOL We (at least I can't) rent HD DVD's up here in Canada.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
Blind Buy today, it's still Sealed...I heard of the title but never paid attention to it. I read the back of HD DVD and saw the Cast listings so I picked it up!
Is it worth opening? Reviews both the Movie and HD DVD it self?
boden11 10-02-06, 04:57 PM two words--
KICK ASS
Fear and lothing is a great flick.
My blind buy was kiss kiss bang bang... Im a big fan of Val Kilmer and this movie was fantastic. The art direction lends itself VERY well to HD with vivid colors that pop like crazy. I highly recommend (even though it's a combo)
Topweasel 10-02-06, 05:06 PM Fear and Loathing, great pickup you will love it.
I have made 2.
Enter the Dragon and Dukes of Hazzard, and will be making a third in Slither.

jorgerod 10-02-06, 07:47 PM For me Blind Buys are hard to come buy as I am as big a movie theater freak as a HT freak. I know most people with good HTs have stopped going to the movies because of the noise, lines, etc but I consider the Movie Theater experience to bring a different view of the same movie. I also like to see a 20 foot Yoda or a 30 foot Jessica Simpson every once in a while.

Gary Murrell 10-02-06, 07:50 PM this is easy, buy them all, every release
I haven't been to a theater in almost 4 years, I buy what I wanna watch and my release schedule is the video release schedule
just my 2 cents, who needs the overpriced, annoying, subpar quality movie theater ? not me ;)
-Gary
Deja Vu 10-02-06, 07:51 PM You can certainly rent HD-DVDs (on line) in Canada - I've been doing it for three months.
Cheers,
Grant
enchntr 10-02-06, 09:18 PM God, many of the purchases I have made are Blind Buys...
Polar Express
Seabiscuit
T3
Good Night and Good Luck
Ĉon Flux
Bone Collector
Ray
Manchurian Candidate
Pitch Black
Sky Captain
U571
Syriana
Phantom of the Opera
Last Samurai
Million Dollar Baby
Serenity
and there will probably be a lot more. I didn't really purchase a lot of DVDs for some odd reason. :)
SirDrexl 10-02-06, 11:40 PM I haven't made any blind buys yet, and I don't think I will, unless they get to under $10 (which won't happen for a while). I don't mind purchasing HD-DVD titles I have on DVD, but I have to know that I like them first.
ChrisW6ATV 10-03-06, 12:35 AM More than half of mine have been "blind buys" (defined, I assume, as a movie you have not seen before?). There have been more "that was really good" ones than "renting it would have been good enough" ones so far.
eapleitez 10-03-06, 12:53 AM I bought Land of the Dead on amazon, and it's actually my first HD-DVD. I don't have a player, but I will be scooping up these combo discs when I find them priced reasonably (most on amazon are fairly easy to be swallowed).
DVD: Only 3 over 9 years of purchases.
HD DVD: 5 and it's only been 6 moths...not good, financially! LOL
Tonight is Depp's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
KaliniuS 10-11-06, 09:32 PM DVD: Only 3 over 9 years of purchases.

Great movie. I loved it. I enojyed it even more than the original.
My blind buys were:
The Bourne Supremacy
Firewall
Syriana
Serenity
Seabiscuit
Red Dragon
Four Brothers
I buy what I wanna watch and my release schedule is the video release schedule
just my 2 cents, who needs the overpriced, annoying, subpar quality movie theater ? not me ;)

Amen Gary! Same here.
TimothyB 10-11-06, 09:46 PM With a bunch of hassle at Best Buy and no new discs out yet, and the guy with the box just happens to come out while two employees are trying to figure things out with the odd street date, I felt on the spot since all these employees were around me. I wanted to look at the new releases, like both Wonka movies and Corpse Bride. But being in the situation I just said what the hell, give me both Willy Wonka movies and Corpse Bride from that box (in his arm) and I was out of there.
Then I have problem of not getting to watch all the movies I buy before I get another movie. I need to get a chalk board and put it up with movie viewing times like a theater to commit myself to watch them, like, "this Saturday, 6pm, Batman Begins HD and Willy Wonka HD, free popcorn :) "
SomethingMore 10-11-06, 11:02 PM Phantom of the Opera
Training Day
Sleepy Hollow
That's 3 of the 12 HD DVDs I have (including 4 on order).
I'm expecting Doom to be next...
Another one...
I've been trying to use my Future Shop GC for sometime now and got tired of waiting...I'm made another Blind Buy..."The Rundown." Great first Rock movie...worth the purchase!

Yeah I go to the theater just about every weekend, sometimes twice in one weekend. This last one I saw The Departed and The Grudge 2.
I know what you're thinking, "Why the hell would you waste money on The Grudge 2!?"
First of all, one of my local theaters has a 70' wide screen, the largest in the midwest. If you go before 1 p.m., admission is only $4.00. Secondly, although I didn't like The Grudge in theaters, the director's cut was much better. I began to appreciate the Japanese aesthetic. The scary stuff has it's own wicked beauty. While watching G2, I was constantly amazed how the entire film is essentially the same trick over and over again...and it kept working! The ending is crap which is too bad because I was enjoying The Grudge 2 up until then. It's not particularly scary, the plot is all over the place, it is supposed to take place the day after the first film yet Buffy's hair has changed from blonde to brunette, but visually I thought it had a lot of good ideas.
brywalker 10-17-06, 04:21 PM My only blind buy was Serenity. What a mistake.
I never saw Firefly, but now I know what the hub-bub was about. I want it to come back. :(
slider33 10-17-06, 04:28 PM I have blind bought Goodfellas, Polar Express, Pitch Black, Riddick, Unforgiven, We Were Soldiers and Lethal Weapon. Quite a few I guess seeing as how I have 13 total. I pre-ordered V for Vendetta today which will be another.
I forgot to add to The Rundown...I didn't Columbia Pictures Produced it! LOL It's weird seeing it on HD DVD! This is the closest we'll ever get.
bboisvert 10-17-06, 05:09 PM My very first HD DVD blind buy is coming up: Slither.
Broccoli 10-17-06, 05:35 PM out of 16 2 blind buys so far: Tokyo Drift and Grand Prix.
my next one will be V for Vendetta
Forceflow 10-17-06, 05:45 PM Blind buys with HD DVD tend to work out just fine. Fear and Loathing is a great, great movie with TrueHD. If you like drugs and have abused them regularly, the movie enters a whole new level. Some memorable quotes (may not be exact as my memory is always impaired during movie).
"The bats!"
"Holy crap, someone is giving booze to these lizards!"
DrCrawn 10-17-06, 05:47 PM I've made a lot of hd dvd blind buys, but I also ask myself a simple question after I view a disc: would I watch this movie again?
After doing this with each hd dvd, I've kept most and sold four immediately: Sahara, U571, Four Brothers, and Spy Game. If I get 10-15 buck back for each, I consider it a night at the movies and forget about it. I can't stand looking at expensive discs on my shelf that I know I didn't enjoy and don't want to watch ever again.
Another Blind Buy purchase today. "V for Vendetta," I got it for $8.99 CAN because the CSR at Best Buy today did 2x $10 returns...instead of $69.99 he gave me back $79.79? LOL
The bad news is I lost my second set iPod Earphones! I guess it's an excuse to upgrade. LOL
I don't do any blind buys. That's what Netflix is for. It's not that I don't want to spend the money, I just hate accumulating stuff I don't use.
Oh, and by the way, I thought "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was a pretty stupid movie. It just didn't do it for me. :)
tormond 11-04-06, 02:26 PM Hmm Blind Buys
The Break Up
The Searchers
Grand Prix
Slither
MI3
Four Brothers
KKBB
Lake House
Out of Sight
Like Gary I havent been in a theatre since the first Lord of the Rings came out. Too expensive to go and I can enjoy the film more in 2 months when it comes out on disc. Now it is even better with HDDVD.
this is easy, buy them all, every release
I haven't been to a theater in almost 4 years, I buy what I wanna watch and my release schedule is the video release schedule

Me too. T3, Aeon Flux, Constantine and Serenity are the only movies I'd seen of my ~30 HD-DVDs.
Omegasaber 11-04-06, 03:45 PM My blind buys so far have been:\
Serenity
Pitch Black
Riddick
Aeon Flux
Land of the Dead
MI:2
MI:3
Equilibrium
And I have to say the only one I was slightly disappointed with was Pitch Black. Just story-wise it seemed very slow. But the colors and feel of it were there.
On the other hand I absolutely LOVED Equilibrium. It was one of those that my friends told me about for years but for some reason I never watched it. It's one of my favorites now.
overcast 11-04-06, 06:04 PM Out of that lot, the only one you were disappointed with was Pitch Black? Did you even watch Aeon Flux and Land of the Dead? :D
I Superman I 11-04-06, 07:46 PM Blind Buys for me...
Serenity
Four Brothers
MI:3
The Corpse Bride
The Thing
Army of Darkness
The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift
Seabiscuit
Aeon Flux
Sky Captain and the World of Tomarrow
We Were Soldiers
Sleepy Hollow
U-571
Backdraft
Swordfish
lol, I have no idea how I didn't end up seeing these prior to their release on HD-DVD, but I'm 19 and some of the movies were before my time or before I was really into Home Theater and the purchase of movies as a hobby.
But the blind buys are great for me, they are usually based off posotive feedback and I love seeing a movie for the first time in the absolute best presentation possible.
boden11 11-04-06, 08:18 PM My BBs:
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
Apollo 13
The Thing
Out of Sight
Under Siege
Adventures of Robin Hood
Spartacus
The Searchers
Unforgiven
Have been happy with all the ones I've seen so far -- only ones left to watch are Out of Sight, Under Siege, The Searchers, Robin Hood and Spartacus.
Omegasaber 11-04-06, 08:42 PM Out of that lot, the only one you were disappointed with was Pitch Black? Did you even watch Aeon Flux and Land of the Dead? :D
I thought Aeon Flux did a decent job of bringing a lot of the good points of the animated series to the screen. Plus it had good action sequences. Land of the Dead was a decent popcorn flick, an ok zombie movie. Pitch Black is just plain boring at parts (most of it really) with the only redeeming factor being the way it was shot most of the time. Just my opinion though, to each their own.
So far my blind purchases are:
MI3 - really liked it.
Tokyo Drift - was ok.
The Thing - I should be getting it in the mail this week.
eapleitez 11-05-06, 12:40 AM So far I have blind bought Land of the Dead, Good Night and Good Luck, Corpse Bride, and Bourne Supremacy
invadergir 11-05-06, 12:43 AM So far for me i bought 4 blindly and have only seen 1 of them since i purchased them (more to come for sure)
Four Brothers - really like this movie
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Out of Sight
Syriana
HD-DVDwonder 11-05-06, 01:24 AM blind buys:
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: fantastic
Robin Hood: fantastic
Unforgiven: fantastic
Constantine: boring
Phantome of the Opera: boring
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: decent, but reference PQ
Mi:3: very good
It's been awhile...
Poseidon (not being a Combo and Jacinda & Emmy of course! LOL) and Black Rain.
Poseidon HD DVD is great, as for the Movie...it was entertaining.
maverick0716 02-06-07, 02:33 AM I'll be buying Babel on blind buy. I really liked 21 Grams and I hear this movie is similarly shot.......that and it's nominated for best picture.
I Superman I 02-06-07, 05:56 AM It seems to me the actual majority of my titles are blind buys. I've added a recent set of blind buys, Accepted, Miami Vice, The Sting, Posiedon, and it looks like it will continue on with Hollywoodland and Babel, all good decisions so far.
pedra12 02-06-07, 07:41 AM Polar Express, Unleashed, and Serenity were my first blind buys. I've enjoyed all three. :D
Batman Begins - Outstanding
Fearless - Oops, didn't care for it, bit too cheesy, but the source is stunning
Last Samurai - Pretty cool
ShishidoJo 02-06-07, 08:31 AM Most of mine have been blind buys so far - Training Day, Out of Sight, Full Metal Jacket, and the most recent, Running Scared. I enjoyed the first three, and I'll probably watch the fourth the night I get it in the mail.
Not sure if this Thread makes sense...I'll give it a shot! LOL We (at least I can't) rent HD DVD's up here in Canada.

From a guy who collects Johnny Depp movies (24 and counting :) )... it is not my favorite... I think he is great in it, but like another poster said, if you aren't a past/present drug user the movie doesn't enter that other level for me. Where as another drug related movie Depp did, Blow, I enjoyed because it was less about the taking of drugs and what they do to you.
I think the acting is great, I have the criterion version of it so I won't be picking up the HD version, but I think there are better Johnny Depp movies out there on HD.
Here are some of my blind buys:
Pitch Black-decent picture, fair movie
Riddick-Great picture, bad movie
Swordfish-Good picture, ok movie
16 Blocks-fair picture, mediocre movie
Firewall-bad picture, bad movie
Bone collector-Fair picture, fair movie
End of days-fair picture, bad movie
Matador-Good picture, good movie
Rundown-OK picutre, horrid movie
Chronos-fair picture, good movie
Most of these were done fairly early, and done mostly to support the format.
At this point, I don't plan on doing many, if any blind buys anymore.
J
Picked-up PULSE. Watched it over the weekend. The movie looks & sounds gr-8. The movie itself. mEh.... :(
TV Casualty 02-06-07, 09:45 AM I'll probably blind buy Hollywoodland.
Was blind on Unforgiven but obviously knew the reputation. Thought it was great.
My Blind buys have been:
12 Monkeys
Batman Begins
Bourne Supremacy
Casino
Goodfellas
Halfbaked
Harry Potter GOF
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang <-- Easily one of my favorite movies now
Last Samurai
Serenity <--- Also one of my new favorite films
The thing
Total Recall
Reign of Fire<-- Christian Bale justified the import price
I have 33 HD-DVD's now so I've made a fairly large percentage of blind buys.
The only one I didn't like was 12 Monkeys, I bought it for Bruce Willis, but Brad Pitt definitely had the best performance. Quite possibly the least satisfying ending I have ever seen in a film. I also question if I will watch the Thing again, though I liked it well enough.
Thats a pretty good success rate!
revspeed 02-06-07, 02:54 PM Same here, just went out and picked up 6 movies out of the blue and only had time to only watch one. Great stuff!
Mummy Returned
Hulk
Fast and The Furious
We were Soldier
Enter the Dragon
Sleepy Hollow
thalazy 02-06-07, 03:30 PM I bought Clerks 2 because it was $17.99 at Fry's. Didn't see it in the theater's. Love the extras movie's pretty good, could do without the donkey show.
baboyizm 02-06-07, 05:24 PM If only the big retail stores had amazon prices, I would blind buy alot more.
Cast & Academy Awards...okay, I was bored. LOL
The Sting and The Deer Hunter
BigJeff 02-06-07, 10:20 PM From a guy who collects Johnny Depp movies (24 and counting :) )... it is not my favorite... I think he is great in it, but like another poster said, if you aren't a past/present drug user the movie doesn't enter that other level for me. Where as another drug related movie Depp did, Blow, I enjoyed because it was less about the taking of drugs and what they do to you.
I completely agree. I hope New Line gets off the sidelines and releases Blow on hd dvd asap. I just preordered The Departed as a blind buy.
GeorgeLV 02-06-07, 10:33 PM If only the big retail stores had amazon prices, I would blind buy alot more.
The prices at Fry's and Wal-mart are pretty much in line with Amazon. It's really only Best Buy (and presumably Circuit City, I don't shop there) that's overcharging.
st_nick 02-06-07, 10:34 PM Have only bought movies I've seen before. Have used Netflix for "blind buys" so far. None that I'm dying to own so far, but glad I saw all of them.
All the movies I buy are "blind buys" so to speak since I ahvent seen them in HD yet and I dont rent them.......so far so good :)
FreeBaGeL 02-07-07, 08:32 AM The Departed will be my first blind buy. I've been waiting for this one to come out in HD since it hit theatres.
studiotan 02-07-07, 12:19 PM The majority of the 80+ movies I have have been blind buys if it's referring to not having seen the movie before. It's still cheaper than a night out at the movies for me and my girlfriend and I really like extras on discs.
I will usually check reviews on PQ quality though before purchase, especially for catalog titles.
The only movie I've regretted buying so far has been House Of Wax. Horrible movie and I was at least hoping for some eye candy but the picture was pretty flat.

I'm all for kickass home theaters and enjoying it in the quiet your own home but going to the theater is still great fun! I mean laughing your ass off with 200 strangers is great and going with a group of friends and then talking about it for the next hour. You can't beat it.

Too much laughter in a theatre is why I will never go to another comedy in a theatre again. Half the time you don't hear the next line.
Back on topic, my blind buys were:
Casablanca
The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Departed
Should hopefully get these today from Amazon (and departed next week).
Topweasel 02-07-07, 02:11 PM So far few blind buys. Pulse, Slither, Serenity was pretty much a blind buy because I bought the SD 3 weeks before making the HD-DVD plunge. Dukes of hazzard and Enter the Dragon as well. Babel is on pre-order and will be another blind buy.
LAGOSIAN 02-07-07, 02:23 PM two words--

capstone 02-07-07, 02:35 PM You can certainly rent HD-DVDs (on line) in Canada - I've been doing it for three months.

NetFlix currently rent HD-DVD's for sure... I just had to adjust my account settings to confirm I had a HD-DVD player and voila!
No Blind Buys anytime soon for me either... Departed is in my Queue though...
Cappy
studiotan 02-07-07, 02:38 PM It wasn't your picture... Paris is flat :)
:p
House of Wax wasn't all bad. I mean you get to see
Paris get a pole shoved through her head.
Plus Elisha Cuthbert is always nice to look at.
lazerfan 02-07-07, 10:33 PM I have 46 HD DVD's now and 24 of them were blind buys. A recent blind buy was Swordfish, which was very entertaining. I've only ditched one blind buy so far- Jarhead. Well made movie, but I knew I wouldn't watch it again.
Kevin
So far for me it has been Lucky # Sleven , Feerless & The Departed.
Lucky , was SO great! I love it when I buy a blind buy and it turns out to be outstanding.
ShishidoJo 02-08-07, 08:24 AM Yeah but how is the PQ of "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas'??
It's nothing extraordinary, but it is noticeably sharper (and probably cleaner; I haven't done a comparison of this yet) than the Criterion DVD. Worth an upgrade if you like the film.

But does it come in a nice case with a sleeve with bats on it? :) Don't make me go upgrading, Criteron's aren't cheap to replace!
Ktulu_1 02-08-07, 09:08 AM I've had more than a few blind buy HD DVDs, but the one I have on order now and I'm eagerly awaiting is The Departed. I assume I will not be disappointed.

That it doesn't, but as a big fan of Criterion, I have to say that their release of "Fear and Loathing" is pretty lousy, especially compared to the HD-DVD. The Criterion has a lot more extras, though.
