View Full Version : Help! RCA HD DVD player stuck on "Welcome" screen, beeps...
at the touch of any button on the front panel or remote, but no button has any effect. It had locked up at some point after my wife put a dirty CD in it. She says it was playing the CD last she knew, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I finally got the CD to eject by using a paper clip. At that point, no button pressed still had any effect. The only way to get the drawer to go back in is to push it. I did put a DVD in it and closed the drawer, but it did nothing.
There is nothing on the TV screen either. No HDDVD logo, nothing.
I have unplugged it and let it sit several times, hoping that would reset it, to no avail.
Anything else I can try? There has to be some way to reset it, right?
Robert D 10-06-06, 10:23 PM Try pressing the power on button on player and holding in in for over ten seconds. This will force the player to boot.
Hey thanks for the quick reply. I tried that, but when I press and hold the button for ten seconds, it just turns back off.
Robert D 10-06-06, 10:37 PM Some here have had the same problem (stuck on welcome screen) and up-plugging the player for a long time (like over night) fixed it. Others gave up and had the player either repaired or exchanged it for another. I recall a long time ago one guy (brave one) took the cover off the player and found a loose cable.
Thanks again. I guess I will leave it unplugged tonight and try it again tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll see if Wal-Mart will exchange it(I'm not sure they even have any more of them at that particular store) or, failing that, will have to call RCA and see what they will do.
Well, I left it unplugged for over 24 hrs. But when I plugged it in and turned it on, it still is stuck on the "Welcome" message.
Unplug player 1 more time from wall, about 10seconds plug player back in.
Next, press the 'open/close' button not the main power button. Press only once (1 beep), and wait...
After abit the drawer should open, insert movie and use remote or same 'open/close' button on player, and see if she starts .
Oh yeah, I also once thought my player was tango uniform, but I had pushed the V.Output button on the remote, fixed by pressing the button 1 more time( to turn the machine back to where it was before accidental button push) :o

OK, the problem is not that the player won't turn on. The light around the power switch will turn from red to green when you push either the open/close button or the power button. But after that, nothing else will happen.
I tried your suggestion; it has now been over 5 minutes and the drawer has not opened. Every button pushed on either the front panel or the remote produces a beep, but nothing else.
acksnay 10-14-06, 10:32 AM Same problem here. It happened with the shipped firmware (1.x), but at least it occasionally worked. Then it happened after I upgraded to 2.0. Within 24 hours it was completely useless.
Maybe we've got the WELCOME VIRUS. lol. No joke but it sure looks that way to me.
acksnay 10-14-06, 11:10 AM One man's resolution.

Yes, I wish I had seen that other post an hour earlier.
But, what I did do was, just to say I tried, I boxed it up and took it back to the WM where I purchased it. A quick tour of the electronics area revealed that the RCA HDDVD players were no longer on display. So, I asked the sales associate, Clifford, if they had any more of the RCA HD players, and he said yes, they had them in the back for $350.
I then told him I had bought mine from them, but it was no longer working. He looked at my receipt and said they couldn't exchange it because it was more than 90 days since purchase. He said I would have to send it back to RCA. I kind of talked to him a little more and he said he just couldn't do it unless a manager approved it. Then I asked Clifford if there was a manager there today. Then he called on the phone and left a message for someone, then shortly thereafter he got a call back from Dora. Next, he was reading a bunch of numbers off the receipt to her.
When he hung up, he said just make sure next time that I return anything within the 90 days, but they would exchange the player. Actually, if I had returned it within the 90 days, I would have gotten $100 back on it, but I was happy just to be able to exchange it, rather than having to deal with RCA.
Now, to try it out and make sure it works right.

It seems to work great, so this actually worked out very nicely, for a change.
Well, my A1 is now STUCK at the Welcome screen!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhh!!!!!
It stopped Reading HD DVDS, saying "No Disc", now it won't even get past the Welcome screen.
I've tried unplugging it ( even overnight), unplugging all cords, hitting Eject to startup etc....
No Go no matter what!!
I even had to manually open the drawer with a paperclip to get my 2F2F disc out....
Man, this thing was already repaired once!!!
