HD DVD Playrs at Base Exchange

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For people authorized to shop at Base Exchanges:

I went to the former Carswell AFB BX in Fort Worth yesterday and was surprised to find both Samsung Blue-Ray and Toshiba HD DVD players. The Samsung was hooked to a plasma tv but no one was paying much attention to it. There was no place to sit in front and hardly anything to call attention to it. I didn't bother to notice what was playing. I did not see the Toshiba being demoe'd.

The Samsung is priced at $849 and I saw around a dozen units there.

The Toshiba is priced at $449 and I saw about half a dozen units in the shelves.

An additional 10% discount is available to those that qualify for a AAFES charge card (first purchase only).

I did not see any HD movies for sale.

Hey, if you don't like it, don't patronize the BX...simple!

We were stationed in Ankara Turkey for two years, back in the 70's. The Turkish Government made the BX go away. Never thought my family and I would miss it that much!

hughh,

Thank you for informing us of this wonderful deal. I never said I shopped the BX/PX/NEX/AAFES and will never patronize them! Thank you!

You said back in the 70's.... back then they probably weren't as crooked as now! Back when my father was in the Navy in the 60', there were good deals to be had. Now, not so much... have you been to the exchange lately and compared the prices?

I'm entitled to my opinion on here as you are posting ugly exchange prices! Have a good day MSgt!

I'd imagine civilian options in Ramadi are somewhat limited. ;)

Cpanther95-

Yep, the options sure are limited! The mail system works quit great, thank goodness for that!

You would also get a kick out of what they stock here at the "MCX" here in Ramadi in their little 10 X 30 wooden shack. For example... Xbox 360's, Playstations, Games to go along with them, a very few regualar DVD's, and off course the most important things you need like toiletry items... CAN NOT BE HAD!!! LOL!!

I'll let you guys answer the question as to why they keep those things in stock, it's not that hard to figure out. ; )

Mike,
I NEVER said the price on the DVD players was a GOOD deal! I just posted the information mainly to make AVS members aware that both BR and DVD HD market
is starting to broaden. As you probably know, AAFES has never catered to early adopters.

have you been to the exchange lately and compared the prices?>>> Have I been to the BX lately? I just posted I went to the BX YESTERDAY!!! I have to return today. My wife purchased several clothes items on sale (2/3 off) for our grandchildren and some don't fit anymore . They seem to be growing to darn fast!

Have a good day MSgt!>>>

Thank you Mike, you too! Keep safe!

Funny, the Turkish Government never closed our Class VI. But at least they (The Government) owned two breweries and two wineries. So, that would not have hurt as much as the closure of the BX AND the APO. Through the APO we were able to receive 1CL mail, but no parcel mail, it was an embargo enfoced country-wide.

For toiletries, children clothes, our civ. clothes, etc., we had to fly to Athens (Hereklion AB) once in a while and load up at the BX.

The whole thing was their government's reaction to our Congress halting the
military sale of arms/supplies.

I was in the Azores in '96 & '97. Just for grins I counted the number of CD players and cassette players they were stocking. Five CD players versus fourteen cassette decks. This was in '97! Every TV they carried was multi-system even though AFRTS was broadcasting in NTSC. They still had a copies of TurboTax or TaxCut on the shelves for the '95 tax year (in '97.)

It sure wasn't good, but it was the ONLY game in town.

But boy was beer cheap at the shoppette. Case of bud was $8.40. I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday but I sure can remember those prices!

What I meant was have you compared prices? Yes, I realize that you've been to the BX. I see that you are an avid shopper there.

I do agree that you can find some items, I repeat SOME items at a good deal at the exchange.

For me, I find it easier to shop at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, and on top of it I don't have to deal with military people or the civilain snobs that work there! : )

I agree, especially about COSTCO and Sam's Club. We live at the edge of Ft Worth and we are members of Sam's there. Also, on the other side of town we have a COSTCO and we are also members. Between those two places I usually find my best buy on wines and beer. I can't remember when was last time I purchased any electronic geer at the BX.

They were having a 25% Columbus Day special on some HD tv's. I'm not in the market, so I didn't really look into it. Other than toiletries and clothing on sale, we seldom purchase anything there. About Walmart, I'd rather pay more at some other place! There are two of them nearby and I feel luky every time I come out and see my car still in one piece!

I'd rather deal with military/ex-military than what I see coming in and out of those two Walmarts. Thanks to TX law, you can carry a gun as long as you have a permit. Always pack mine whenever my wife needs to go to Walmart for some yarn.

Hugh,

That's a shame you live in a neighborhood like that! I do love TX laws, but that state stinks! ; )

I know, I know I'm from IL.... Well, to tell you the truth I don't have to worry about any of those problems. And, being in a college town of top of it is a real plus! : ) : )

Would be nice to carry an M4 auto loaded with ACOG, PAC 4, SureFire, and a broomstick. That would take of your problems, as it does mine over here! : )

Take care Hugh, I'll be out of the military in late January! WOOHOO!!!

Actually Mike, we live in a pretty nice neighborhood. The stores are not located in bad neighborhoods either. It' just that for some reason, they seem to attract that type of clientel. BTW, Arlington is also a college town and we don't seem to have the problems some college towns have with some students.

I am not a native Texan, but after wandering around this country and the world for 23 years, we decided North TX was the place for us to settle in.

Just curious, what do you do with the broomstick?

Hang in there Mike, January will be here before you know it and everything will be over!!!

Cvetan1

LOL!!

You don't know what a broomstick is Hugh!??!?! I forgot you were in the "Chair Force"!! ; )

That's what we use to smack Iraqi's around with over here, duh!!!

No, really it's a handle that you mount under the front rail system on the M4. It's basically just something to hold on to while you fire your weapon. It's also where you can mount your switch for your SureFire(rail mount flashlight), for ease of use.

Mostly because it marked the first turnaround in how BD mastering was supposed to have been done. The Picture Quality can hold its own.

And then... there is this line :

AAFES Europe doesn't seem to carry either format yet.

I only checked Heidelberg, Mannheim, Ramstein and K-Town though.

I wonder about availability at AAFES Pacific. During 'Nam they always had the latest cameras, receivers, etc., way ahead of AAFES US and at some unbelievable prices.

When I left in the middle of September they were not selling any HD-DVD players or BD players. They didn't even know what they were.
The AAFES on Okinawa blows and they sell almost everything at MSRP, DVD's forget about it, they are at least $19.95 with no mark downs on older movies. Most of us view them as the MAFIA and they know that we have nowhere else to shop so why cut prices? Those of us that want a decent deal go mail-order and still get a better price even with very high USPS shipping rates.
I am trying to get most of my high dollar shopping done before I go back to Oki, that way I can just put it on my plane. (KC-130)

What about on the economy? We were able to find great bargains in Hong Kong way back when. Seems to me Okinawa, being so close to Japan would have the latest gear and even 'tho it wouldn't be compatible with US specs, at least you could get a gleam of what's in store for us.

Sorry to hear AAFES has gone down hill in PACAF.

Haven't really compared prices at the mall part of the exchange, but THANK GOD for the commissary! Living in Hawaii I would be dead broke if I couldn't buy groceries at the NEX. We're talking prices 50% less than local grocery stores.

Yeah, I know, Hawaii is "paradise" but everything is so damn expensive!

DECA company runs the commisary, not the NEX.

Yes, you will find really good prices there. Two totally seperate entities.

I can...it was about three months ago when they matched the price for JVC HD set (56FN97) on sale at Best Buy. It was as good a price as available online plus I paid no sales tax and got a three-year extended warranty for $69.
