View Full Version : Wireless Room Extension for HDTV

I suspect this has been addressed in other threads, but my search couldn't find the one for me. I have a house that has most of the AV in one corner of the first floor, and my bedroom is in the opposite corner of the second floor. It isn't an extensive distance, maybe 80-100 feet, but the cabling isn't there to run a good AV signal and the walls don't lend themselves to running new cable easily.

I am only running the normal DirectTV signals into my DVR on the first floor, and using the cable that is there to send the RF signal to the second floor. This has sufficed until I just bough a HDTV for my bedroom, and found out how bad the picture being sent really is. The cable that's in the wall has at least 3 splitters in the 2nd floor joists which adds to the quality deterioration.

So, my question is how do I get a better picture to the second floor without a bunch of wire fishing through two floors of walls? I looked around for a wireless transmitter, hoping things would be easy, and found a 5.8ghz transmitter/reciever by RF Link AVS-5811 that will send the composite video and stereo audio from room to room, but I'm not sure that would be better.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated here.

I've no experience with it, but it has been posted before -- Belkin PureAV RemoteTV

http://www.pureav.com/remotetv/

a quick google suggests that it may not be in production anymore??? It's still on Belkin's website but listed as "Sold Out".

(I see a couple on ebay for what it's worth)

Hmmm... That sounds pretty close, but zowie! The cheapest I could find on a search was $448. Maybe my picture isn't so bad! I might try a good over the air HD anteanea to get my locals in HD for a while. :o

I don't really want the DVR in the bedroom due to the disk drive noise. So if anyone has other suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for the input.

The Pure AV solution (which I own) doesn't send HD even though it has component inputs and outputs. It only supports standard NTSC resolution.

I love this system. However, its now near impossible to find (I was lucky to get a really good deal on it through eCost some months ago).

Here's my assessment of the system: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=728489&highlight=RemoteTV

If Belkin came out w/ a successor to the RemoteTV that was HD-capable and delivered the same quality and ease-of-use, I'd say it'd be a top-notch choice.

There was one of these on Gizmodo just the other day, but it's $2k ($1k for the tx, $1k for the rx!) It streamed HD over wireless or cables, and didn't require a computer.

There are also a number of remote media extender kind of things, if you can get your video onto a PC. Here's a recent one (link). Others would include the new apple iTV and a plain old Xbox with a wireless access point.

Note that you can (soon) create a pretty nice HD-capable tivo out of an HDPC. ATI is just coming out with a uni-directional HD-CableCARD TV tuner PCI card. It should work in Vista's version of Media Center, which will allow you to record 2 shows and play back shows on any number of wireless "media extenders" along with output to a local tv. As far as I know the only vista-capable media extender right now is the xbox (and maybe that netgear box), but there should be more soon.
