Hey, any fellow Winnipegers find Charlie or Polar Express yet? I've checked St.Vital Walmart/London Drugs and Pembina Future Shop.

Hi fellow-Winnipeger. Went to the exact places you went to but nothing of course. Next will be Best Buy and Future Shop (Regent). If you check them out before me post back here. I'll do the same. Last time, Future Shop on Regent had the releases but 2 days after the release date (may have had them sooner but I only went there two days after release).

Sounds good! I will be checking WalMart on Kenaston later tonight. They had Troy a couple of days before it was even out.

Just got back from Kenaston, no luck there either, although they did still have copies of Batman Begins. Hope you have better luck on Regent.

Those two titles are nowhere to be found in Winnipeg as of Oct 11. The latest titles I've seen are Batman Begins, Dirty Dozen, Troy, T3, Dazed and Confused.

I read that Polar Express while looking great... doesn't look significantly better than the already good SD release.

Still no sign of The Lake House, either.

There will probably be ONE copy of Polar Express available in WPG... and the three of us will be fighting over it !! :p

Guys I won't be heading to Regent until at least Friday.

There will probably be ONE copy of Polar Express available in WPG... and the three of us will be fighting over it !!

The releases have been coming fairly quickly in some locations in terms of the release dates. I'm sure the market is getting tight enough that at some point the number of titles ordered will have to increase so guys ;ike us won't have to race around like chickens with their heads cut off just to get some of these releases.

Can you edit the title of this thread to something like "WINNIPEG HD-DVD SCENE" or similar?

We can use the thread to track releases and news for us Winnipeggers.

AMAZON: Do you get dinged for Duties/Taxes etc?? I think I should order the MI set ... Guessing it won't be available here in October. What does the cost end up for a disc like Charlie ($23.83 locally) ?

the47ronin

I just received my HDs today from Amazon: Charlie CF, Corpse Bride; Grand Prix..yess.

Ordered from Amazon.com last Friday. On Tuesday (Oct. 17) I was notified they had shipped. I received them today (Oct. 20). VERY happy. Paid $19.95 each. No tax and duty. Now I used the 2nd fastest way to ship , Expedited International Shipping and handling at $14.46 for a total of $74.31 (what can I say I'm very impatient about these things). Any Winnipegers want to compare prices here from purchases in Winnipeg with 13% tax? I've never found Grand Prix in any store here by the way.

THE LAKE HOUSE ... StJames BestBuy $34.99 ... only one left.

They keep their HD-DVDs in three separate locations. With the new releases, at the Toshiba endcap display, and mixed in with their alphabetically sorted DVDs.

THE POLAR EXPRESS ... StVital Wallyworld $24.83 ... two left.

Hey Peggers!
Just came home with 6 new flics last night that I bought from BB in St. James. ie: Grand Prix, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Lethal Weapon 2, Batman Begins, Caddyshck and The Lake House. The clerk at BB was most helpful as he had to go hunt them down in the stock room in the back. This happened to me a couple weeks back at FS too when the items weren't out on the store racks. All and all I would say these two stores have been pretty good at getting stock. I've noticed there might be a one or two week lag from the time the flick is realeased in the US and the time we get them here in Winnipeg. Of all the films released so far I've only been unable to obtain but a few: Assault on Precinct 13, ATL, Good Night &GL, House of Wax, Traffic and Unleashed. Haven't checked for Army of Darkness, Corpse Bride, Fast Times, Polar Express, Waist Deep or Willy Wonka yet as I've gotten in the habit of waiting the two weeks. On a humorous note: I've gone up twice to the till at BB with a movie only to be told they can't sell it to me because they can't release it just yet. (I pick up Charlie and Choc. Factory after Tuesday.. maybe there are other copies, sorry I forgot to ask). Lastly, I don't know how all of you feel about pricing but I feel the price of these disks have been quite fair..23.99 for catalog movies.. a little more for newer ones..only the combo disks I find expensive and frankly unnecessary.. :>

Mission Impossible Collection $69.99 at both FS and BB. Both had Oct28 Release Date in their computer, but only FS would sell. M:I III is two discs!!

I think FS StJames will have two left on Monday. BB StJames should have 10.

Thanks SV for the the above tip. Frankly I was unaware until now that the Winnipeg Wal-marts even carried HD disks. I took a drive out to St.V to check out their selections and decided to pop into London Drugs as well. I really liked the way LD displayed their selection and liked the fact they have a demo going too. It was the only place that had a copy of Interpreter which I immediately snatched up. I think I'm going to make it a point of buying my disks here from now on (or as many as I possibly can) as I like the fact it is a Canadian company. I also find the staff there super friendly and helpful.

St. Vital Walmart had those same titles, plus they also had the best price for V for Vendetta: $23.95! BB and FS still want $29.95 or higher for that one.

Still no sign of Casablanca, Forbidden Planet and Mutiny on the Bounty.

Pretty sure Superman Returns and Ant Bully will be relatively easy to find, but I am having doubts about Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Dune, and American Werewolf in London.

Just an update today if anyone is brave enough or stupid enough (like me) to venture out in this weather:

I was in the Polo Park area, so I stopped into Future Shop on St. James, and found out they had NOTHING! Not one new release, which kinda cements my opinion that they've just given up. Period. It's like their HD DVD section is stuck in a time warp since early October.

Best Buy next door had Superman Returns for $34.95, and Superman: The Movie for $23.95. No Superman II: DC, Ant Bully, Dune or American Werewolf in London.

Walmart had only Superman Returns. The sticker on the package said $34.85, but when the clerk scanned it, it was actually $28.83! This is by far the best price I've seen this at, even online.

Thanks for the tip, Darcy. I picked up SR from Wally Kenaston, but had to have customer service call Wally Polo to match the price. SR scanned as $34.83 at Kenaston.

Four SR remain at Kenaston, but none left at Ellice.

Hello there fellow Winnipegers! I currently live in Vancouver, but I am in Winnipeg about 2-4 times a year for family, etc.

I currently write for www.dvdreview.com and have written over 120 reviews. My main focus is on HD DVD right now, but I have reviewed SD DVD, UMD and even wrote a column on the future audio formats. Check it out.

It's nice to hear a bit about home here on AVS, let's keep it up! :)

I guess the crappy weather you guys have been getting out there is enough to feel like "home". :) It's nice to have fellow (ex)Winnipegers on this forum.

I work downtown, so today on my lunch break I dropped into HMV, and low and behold they now have a (small) HD DVD, BD section. They did have a few titles I haven't seen anywhere else, but of course the catch is their prices are the highest in the city.

Here are some of what I found:

Casablanca: $29.99
Forbidden Planet: $29.99
Mutiny on the Bounty: $29.99
The Mummy: $32.99

Some of their crazy prices:
Superman Returns: $39.99
Ant Bully $39.99

They had Superman: The Movie for $29.99, but I have yet to find Superman 2: DC locally, so if anyone finds it, please post the location here.

Tried to get Miami Vice today, no luck. When I was At FS, there was a women from their distribution company, and she said that they haven't received any copies at all.

HMV Polo Park had one copy of Christmas Vacation, but it was a steep $34.99.

Best Buy St. James had An American Werewolf in London, but it was $39.99.

HMV Polo (or Portage Place can't remember) had Smallville S5 for $64.99.

HMV Portage had Superman 2: DC, but only in Blueray for $29.99.

It seems You Me and Dupree has shown up at most places, but at a steep $39.99.

That's all I've found so far.

Hello once again! I will be in Winnipeg for Christmas (staying in the Garden City area). Is the Wal Mart on McPhillips the best place to pick up a few HD DVDs while in Winnipeg? Close to where I am staying that is. My other option is the Polo Park area too! :D

Hey Darcy, that snow we had was not enough! We love seeing Vancouverites all stressed out over blowing snow and a cooler temperature, makes for some fun! Especially since I can walk to work (I live downtown and work at our new Costco location downtown). :)

Hello fellow Winnipegers! I just returned from my trip to the 'Peg and I have to say, the weather was superb! -2 to -6 for daytime highs was most welcomed. Then again, I was born and raised in Winnipeg, so -30 with wicked windchills does not scare me one bit! :) I laugh at all of the pussies here on the west coast that whine and complain when the temperature dips below +5!

Had a great time seeing my family and bought a few HD DVDs too! Best deal had to be at the Best Buy across from Polo Park, they had a copy of "V for Vendetta" priced at $8.99! (obviously their thermal price tag printer was out-to-lunch). When the disc rang up at the actual price of $28.99, I was given the cheaper price, thanks to a little "friendly persuasion" :D .

My impressions of Wal Mart in Winnipeg was pretty good. I visited the locations in Garden City, Regent and Polo Park. Hands down Garden City had the best selection, except for the poor display! They were the only location that had their HD DVDs locked up behind plexi-glass. Add to that, it looked as if someone had dumped a pallet of HD DVDs inside and shut the door. HD DVDs were backwards, upside down, etc. making it hard to see what they had. After getting a sales associate to open the case up, I managed to organize the mess a bit to make it easier to see. The Wal Mart employee apologised for the mess stating the lack of shelf space and the Christmas rush as reasons for the disarray. Other than that, this location easily had the largest amount of titles and quantities of HD DVD.

I had a great time in Winnipeg, as I always do, except that my Mom's health was not up to par, given her battle with cancer. This holiday season was bitter sweet overall. It was great to see my Mom, I only wished that she had a bit more strength to enjoy the holiday's more. Sometimes life truly does suck. It is sure hard to see the one's you love have to deal with such brutal issues.

Sorry to sound like a downer, I just feel a slight connection to you guys from my home town.

Just curious. Are you guys here in Winnipeg buying combo disks? Whereas other people in other places seem to be paying a 2 to 5 dollar premium on these disks, we here in Winnipeg pay a lot more. Has anyone spotted BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, DERAILED, HOLLYWOODLAND, or THE DEPARTED ?

The Departed should be released on Tuesday the 13th, since Warner is pretty good about day and date, especially on big new releases.

Derailed is a Weinstein release, and I have yet to see a solid Canadian date for any of them.

I have yet to see Hollywoodland, but I bet it will be delayed 1 to 2 weeks in Canada like all of Universal's new releases (such as Miami Vice).

Brokeback Mountain is distributed in Canada under a different company (like Jet LI'S Fearless ) so your best bet would be to order from Amazon.com.

I just wish someone would start some major petition to stop these darn things. If a want a SD-DVD version of a movie I'll buy it already.

I agree. I see people posting on these forums that a $3 to $5 premium is not a bad deal for a combo, but here in Canada, it's much more (sometimes as much as $10 - $15). Most non-combos are $23 - $27, so combos should be about $28 - $32. Sometimes they are $40 - $50, which is why I order from Amazon.com, and screw BB and FS.

mdc3000
02-10-07, 05:05 PM
Hollywoodland is similar to fearless and brokeback, released by Alliance in Canada, so the hd dvd should be MIA for a while until someone imports it, so if you want it bad, head to amazon. Looks like the Weinstein stuff should be out late february in Canada.

Bought Happy Feet last week. I'm one of the "one in five"(according to an informal poll on this site) that seem to be having trouble with the movie at the 28 min mark. Froze up completely. Had to unplug and restart my HD-A1 (2.0) to open up the disk tray again. Several attempts ..same thing. Switched to DD+ from TrueHD and this time got the loudest pop I have ever heard!.. stuttered but movie continued on its way. Returned the movie back to B.B St. James but again the same thing is happening. I think we got a bad batch... Think I'll trade it on for another movie instead and wait until this problem is resolved. Anyone else have the same trouble here in Winnipeg?
