View Full Version : ISF tune up
anyone ever have their CRT tuned up by an authorized ISF tech?
what was the outcome?
what did you pay and do you think it was worth it?
i never hear much about color temp and CRT sets

I never heard anybody complain about a bad ISF calibration after doing some research and finding the right guy. Everybody who has had their set calibrated say it's definetely worth it, and i can't recall reading anything on here about them going back to default settings afterwards.

FWIW i think Uwisconsin has a calibration coming up any day now for his XBR970. I'm interested to hear how everything goes.

I have Sony 960 and had it calibrated by ISF guy. It was $275 and he set the Pro setting by hooking up a computer and setting gray and black levels.
I love the way my set looked afterwards. You can tell a Mexican from an East Indian. Also white people have different, more lifelike tones. Everyone is not orange. Is it worth it? Only your wallet and viewing requirements can say. I was very satisfied.

I'm paying $200.. for one input.. I got to know my calibrator, and he offered a discount.. it's usually $225, the standard for CRT calibration.

All i really need is a greyscale tune-up but that's about it.
I may call one as well.

Had both of my sets calibrated by Chad last week. Nice guy and worked really hard. Colors are more realistic. He tried to correct my Panasonic sets geometry issues but to be honest it created other ones. Overall I am pleased. I did take my Sony out of the Pro mode on all inputs except the dvd and hd dvd input. It was a impovement but not a WOW if that is what you are expecting. He basically squeezed the most of my sets. I had already done alot of tweaking myself. I think it is worth the money but if you are expecting miracles then you will be dissapionted.
this might be a dumb question but does it matter if the ISF tune-up is done at night in the dark or with lots of sun light coming into the room?
i do most of my watching at night with all the lights out

Chad told me that 90 percent of the calibration is display based and not affected by the time of day. The other 10 percent can be tweaked by the owner after calibration.

Well, I have 2 XBR970 (960 got replaced). One is ISF calibrated and one is not.
The calibrated one is perfect geometry, no overscan, right grayscale, color balance,
purity, etc. It looks like a 1080p TV but with juddering on still images. The picture
is wonderful, lifelike, and clearer than my window. Watching talk show host like
Leno or Letterman makes them so real that you can touch them. There is no artificial
looking material on them unless the program has some filters in them. It's like having
all the pros with CRT but eliminated the cons (picture wise). Compare to the non-ISF,
it's no match. It's not a Kia to a Rolls Royce conversion but more like a Honda to a
Mercedes Benz. It also cost me $532 and some cents (Illinois tax included). Is it
worth it? Not unless you really are a visual purist but when your a casual viewer,
then no.

$532? was that for one input?
how long did it take him?

I sure hope not. The standard price on ISF is $225, plus $75 for each additional input. The guy who is going to be doing mine, said about 4 hours, give or take another hour.

It's not the whole input. I have him calibrated SD and HD on every single inputs
except the one without HD plus the additional work for the geometry and other
imperfections. It took him 5 hours to do this mostly during perfecting the geometry.
I didn't find him stalling at all. I see he's having trouble making it so.

I would get ISF calibration just for the geometry if I could afford it.
