I thought it is about to start an official bf 2142 thread. The game should be playable in a few hours now. Gamespot has their review already. They say 8.1
One thing of note is that it appears that future still has advertising from the early 21st century. From gamespot:
"On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." "
I remember while playing the demo I was watching walkers being hit by a barrage of "future arty" with advanced hover choppers flying overhead as I stormed up from the beach to a control point. I remember thinking "Hey this game does do a good job of making you think that you are in some future war." I think that that feeling would have quickly dissipated had I come up from the beach only to find a billboard for "My Name is Earl" on NBC Thursday.

I also can't wait to play the full version. I think that there is a lot of fun to had, despite the adware crap.
I estimate that I have played around 150 hours of BF2 and that game is starting to get old. If I can play a game for 20 hours without getting tired of it I regard it is pretty well made. BF2 is in a league of it's own as far as I am concerned and 2142 ups the ante and adds in some nice new features. Naturally I plan on enjoying it (in 18 hours according to the downloader countdown).

Ya, the in game adds don't bother me 1 bit, I just want to play.

I love BF2 - what's not to love, get on a good server with VOIP and solid squad play - some of the best gaming ever. From the demo I dig 2142 also, but I can't help thinking they are charging $50 for a mod. Then again, on a per hour of enjoyment basis it probably still comes out cheap so easier to rationalize.

The part I was reading the past two days was over the in-game add's and spyware used with those add's...

yep... when i got the game , it came with a disclaimer.... but then again, there are other games that have the same issue

Here are some details:
And here's the other problem, which appears to be much bigger. DQ reader Noah sent me this:
-------------
EA released a patch for Battlefield 2142 today, and I noticed this while looking through its ReadMe: "Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update."
And what does the Windows security update KB917422 do?
From Microsoft: "A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it.
------
And the disclaimer:
When I opened the box today, there was an inlay inside it with a desription of how the ad stuff would work. It ends with:
"If you do not want EA to collect, use, archieve or give this data to others or do not want to see the ingame ads then do not install this game on a computer with access to the internet."

I'm hoping to pick this game up soon. Anyone know if it is more demanding on the PC then BF2 because I'm about pushing it with my 9600. I tried the demo and get the DX problem, I updated and still get the problem. I wonder if the retail version will have everything I need to get it running correctly.
BTW, played about 3 hours of BF2 last night on Walking Dead Army server, (no vehicles) and it was some awesome firefights going on. BF2 will never get old to me, but I may uninstall Special Forces since I played about 3 hours total.
Another question...does it have the co-op mode that was included in the one of the later BF2 patches?
Man, I just can't believe that some of you accept the idea of a game collecting, archiving, sharing, or selling your personal habits. And pitching you Pepsi in a setting that takes place over a century from now, to boot.
I'd understand an ad-rich game if you got, say, fifteen bucks off the purchase price...

Yep.
The downloader finally let me install it after retail versions were availible for a day
Anyway... There are a lot of good unlocks. I really think that the new Titan mode has a ton of potential. I can't wait to play this in an orginized clan style match.
Edit: As far as system requirements go, it doesn't seem to be any more taxing. I am running a 7800gt and it runs fine on high settings.

I've only run the demo but it doesn't seem to be any more demanding. Same engine and everything.
Same old DICE/EA beta software again and we keep buying it. Getting lost server conections from EA over and over again. Also had probms installing patch. Screwed up the shortcut and tried to launch ANYDVD...LOL. Had to edit shortcut to run after patch. Well I heard there is another patch coming very soon. So far on Cainslair srvr (usally very good server hosts)...BF2142 lags like crazy...and its not my system or connection. Hey its only day one more or less....for Canadain buyers, FUTURESHOP has a very good price for the next 3 days or so. I got my a today, ahead of the Oct 19th start date of sale.

Good deal, I'll probably pick it up this weekend. I'd just hate to get a new graphics card with all the new PC and 360 games coming out. I'm going broke.
Well getting disconnects from EA server is a pain...was just playing Verdun on Cain's and was doing well. Got 7 sniper kills and no deaths and got awards then disconnected again...

I still haven't run into advertising in game. Now I am getting kicked by punkbuster after about 2 minutes everytime I join. :(
I do wonder how all of this stupid tracking of "in game impression time" affects bandwidth issues.
There has been a few with this problem including myself, what I did to fix it along with 4 others in my clan was, uninstall run a search for punkbuster and battlefield 2142 demo, erase everything it had, reinstall upgrade punkbuster and bingo it worked for everybody who had the problem so far, son it seems to be a soliton that works.

Finally played the demo, it's pretty cool...feels very different from BF2. But the lag was horrid even on 5-10 player servers. My ping is always in the low 20's, so to me this feels like when I first played Special Forces. BF2 is always smooth as butter. hmmm?

I came an inch from buying the download version yesterday. Then I read how you HAVE to use their download tool...AND it HAS to stay installed to play the game....Uhh Add that to the craptastic beta software we put up with with BF2 and the whole 'spyware' thing and I was totally turned off. Enough is enough! Officially skipping this thing.

i've spent as much time trouble shooting, tweaking and generally getting bf2 to work. after paying for bf2, armored fury and special forces i'm not going near another steamy pos product from this company.
i've been playing red orchestra now and have been loving it. only cost 16 bucks at wal mart and i have the graphics maxed out with nary a hiccup.
LAAAAAAAAG......LAAAAAAAAG......LAAAAAAAAAG.... did I mention LAG...   Hope they fix it soon. Seems it was the same when BF2 and SF 1st came out  . Dont see why they are having this probm since this is not new tech....just a super BF2 mod...IMO

I went into Best Buy today and was surprised to see this sitting on the shelf, boxes everywhere.......I picked it up...looked at it.
Remembered paying $50 bucks for BF2
Remembered how the game is only good if I devote my life to constantly playing it just to unlock a new gun once per month....
Put the box down...I've had enough of that kind of investment, thanks. :)

Well I unistalled, reinstalled and now I have the same problem. The first time I run the game it is fine, no punkbuster kicks. But everytime that I start it after that, I get kicked byb punkbuster after about two minutes. Hey maybe I should just reinstall the game everytime I want to play it.

Ok, well I played a bit last night and tonight, and my opinion of this game has changed for the better. I do like the new rank up/unlock system, and the variety of unlocks, although I can see how some of them could be useless. Also, I forgot how long it takes to really get used to a new map - can be very frustrating!
As far as the system requirements, the only time I notice slight stutter in gameplay is when i was in the Titan..maybe it was lag, but it seemes like graphical slowdown. Everything else (as well as BF2) run perfectly fine.
I'm still getting used to Titan mode. I usually play good ol' Conquest maps, but I'll do Titan now and again to get the hang of it. BTW, I am using my unlocks on the Support class. Pretty fun, just have to remember to crouch/lay down before I fire, otherwise I'm all over the place.
I have had some typical BF/EA connection problems now and again, but they seem few and far between.

This is the first BF full game I purchased and had a question about the accumulation of points to get unlocks. I played 2.5 games last night and had built up around 60 points total for that round and a Titan defense ribbon and medal. I exited the round by hitting escape and looked at my stats in BFHQ, my kills and awards were there but in my points screen it said 0/40. Anyone have an explanation for this, Did I exit the game incorrectly, any help would be appreciated.

Did you try re-booting the game and checking your stats? Hopefully that fixes it, but there have been many other users complaining about rank-ups and unlocks not going through..

My experience has been pretty good so far, but I have had a few problems.
Install and gameplay are excellent. I have only been dropped once by a server for a punkbuster violation, but after that, no problems.
While playing, I got 3 ribbons and an unlock, but when I went to check my stats, no ribbons :(
Hopefullywhen I log on today, it will be worked out.
Did anyone pre-order from bestbuy figure out how to cash in the unlock code for the special gun?

After about 10 minutes running around decided I like BF2 a lot more than this game....and I dont play BF2 anymore. Just couldn't get into it.

There is a wierd issue with the unlocks. I had to update punkbuster to get my unlocks. Odd. It did keep all of my points though.

Im having the same problem. Just got the game on Sat and it runs fine. No problems really other than that I can't unlock anything or level up, ever! My buddy and I played for hours and the rank never goes up. It just goes to infinity/40 or whatever. I never get any upgrades, I can't throw grenades. Wtf?! How DO you even get grenades?
Wtf? There are only five levels? If I play single player only how do I get anything?
After playing it, does anyone else feel that BF2142 is more like a mod of BF2 than a significantly different game? Conquest gameplay is basically identical to BF2, the weapons/units/vehicles are essentially the same (in terms of the function they perform and not their visuals) and even the maps wouldn't be out of place in the BF2 universe.
Think back to how differently warfare was conducted 150 years ago compared to today, if anything this rate of change will likely accelerate in the future. Is it too much to ask for a bit of imagination on the part of the developer, especially for the price they're charging for this "new" game?

Yeah that's the common idea. It's funny though how FPS gamers expect so much more from a new game than Madden players who shell out $50 year after year for one new feature and a roster update.
I think that there is a lot of new content in 2142. It plays a lot like BF2, but that is a good thing! The unlocks and new squad points are enough of an addition to keep me playing.
Demo definitely seemed like a mod, but will wait to see until i play the full version a bit. can't wait to do some battlin'. :D
Ya it might be a mod , but its one hell of a fun mod! the unlock system was weird at first but after using it for a while, It's actually a pretty good idea, it keeps you playing for longer cause you want to unlock something cool.
Also the demo sucks compared to the real game, a HUGE difference in gamepley especially titan mode ,woo baby thats fun!

Game seems awesome....just upgraded to a new pc....my last pc would barely play 1942....so this was a must have.
Unfortunatly after 5 minutes or so of online play, I lose the connection to the EA master server. Dunno why. I've even tried it with my Norton turned off. I haven't seen any ads, so I wonder if it goes looking for the adaware data, and my network is blocking it somehow.
Any suggestions? I'm getting tired of playing single player. And this game looks awesome on my 55" HDTV!!!!!!
doc, if you have a router that is most likely your problem(ports not properly opened), or possibly a firewall. From me it was my router, so I took it out ans smashed it and now 2142 works great!.
It seem like those are the 2 biggest issues for losing connection to the master server.

Yeah, I do have a wireless router hooked up. I have the DSL modem hooked to the router and the router hardwired to the pc....have the router for wireless laptop access in the house. Its a netgear, b series, older.
I saw a webpage on EA that showed which ports to make sure were open. I'll fool with that. If that don't work, I'll just unhook the router for awhile since we don't use the laptop as much anymore anyways since we have the HTPC hooked up in the living room now.
Thanks! I wanna play BF!! :D

I wonder if its the router's attempt to block the spyware in the game. Dunno.
Now I just realized that without my router hooked up, my Wii won't be connected to the net. No more Wii Parades! But then again.....Wii parades vs. BF2142 :D
im having a hard time getting a proper res to run this game in on my 50a2000 tv
Is there a way of starting this game in offline mode without disconnecting your internet connection? That allows you to use a single disc for LAN games but it would be nice if it were just a command line in the shortcut.
give this a look threw might have what u are looking for im not sure though.

I basically upgraded to a Core 2 Duo / 8800 GTX system just for 2142. I played the BF series since 1942. My favorite thus far is Vietnam. I never loved the maps in BF2 and I felt the armor, choppers and planes were too strong.
The BF series was always very unstable on my old machine (P4 3Ghz and a few ATI cards). I still have my old machine and bought the 1950 pro for it. A friend of mine both play now in same room. 2142 seems to run much more stable than previous versions, although it is a diff vid card in the old machine now.
If your complaining that this game is just a "mod". Well I can't argue with that... but what exactly do you want them to change. New maps, weapons, weapon balance, etc is fine by me because I like the original formula.
2142 is a nice game. I really like the small and mid size conquest maps. I dislike Titan and don't really play it. Cerbere Landing is probably my favorite map.
I really don't have any gripes with 2142. I think they've pretty much perfected it. I do wish they'd make some maps with more foliage like Vietnam. And I do wish artillery strikes were not so common. Other than that solid game.
If your bored of BF2 or special forces, I think your crazy to still bang on old maps when 2142 is just $50 for a lot of hours of entertainment. But then again I despise EA and was close to abandoning the BF franchise. But my friends bought and loved and 2142 so I had to jump back in.
I'm ""this close to getting it working on the Sharp 46 from Costco...just some last minute "won't do 1080p" on the 8800...gah, I want to play w/ 20 inch mechs!!

I think I might pick up a copy based on this, especially since I hated the Titan mode in the demo also.
Just reading over what you've written you might really enjoy the Point of Existence 2 mod for Battlefield 2. It's free and is just dramatically different, much better balance especially when it comes to armor and air. Some maps are even exclusively infantry. You'd hardly recognize the game, I'd say it offers more differentiation even than 2142 so it's a major mod (as evidenced by the large download too). Tactical Gamer has a server that gets a fair amount of traffic, you might give it a try especially if you enjoy online squad play. They have servers for 2142 also and plenty of other games.
