View Full Version : If you want Hard Boiled in HD-DVD Come Here...
Chris Rein 10-19-06, 01:16 AM If you like John Woo and want Hard Boiled in HD, preferably in HD-DVD!, take a vote here. It might not matter right off the bat since this is for the upcoming game called Stanglehold, but they are considering throwing in extra content, aka the movie in Hi-Def, for $10 more than the game. I'm already sold on the game, and love the movie! So if you want it, go vote for it!
Just don't click on intent to purchase a PS3. Say Xbox 360 and the rest is up to you. ;)
Hard Boiled in HD Survey (http://hormel.midway.com/subscribe/survey?f=12)
suprmallet 10-19-06, 02:08 AM Interesting. I detest special editions of video games with only lame physical extras and/or a making of. But if they put a feature film on HD DVD, then it would definitely be worth an extra $10. It would depend on the transfer, of course.
I did the survey xbox 360 and yes to the movie.
Looked like the question for the movie is only refering to BR...
Amiable-Akuma 10-19-06, 10:35 AM Looked like the question for the movie is only refering to BR... exactly, that's what I thought. Makes me wonder if I should vote since I hate BD so much and love HD DVD...
Maxflier 10-19-06, 11:31 AM Well maybe if they see enough people vote 'yes' to buying it bundled with a hi-def version of the movie, but 'no' to buying a PS3 they will do it for both.
Although i didn't read the question on the survey as being BR-only in the first place.
Ktulu_1 10-19-06, 11:37 AM Although I'd like to see Hard Boiled on HD-DVD, I voted honestly. I have an Xbox 360, intend to buy a PS3, and will not be using PS3 for watching movies.
Seems like the video game guys are looking to see how much of these game systems will be used to watch movies and if there is value in including a movie with a game. Personally I don't think there is any. Good games can stand on their own just like good movies. I don't watch movies on my game machines so mixing the two does nothing for me.
Maxflier 10-19-06, 11:43 AM You see no value in getting a hi-def movie for $10?
Ktulu_1 10-19-06, 01:25 PM That would be great if I could get a movie that I wanted with a game I wanted. It remains to be seen whether the movie or the game warrants the extra expense.
In this case I like the movie but I know very little about the game. If the game studios are having problems selling games, I suggest they make better games. I just don't see a great game selling with a great movie at a reduced cost. Marketing ploys hold little value for me.
I would love Hard Boiled, as it's one of my favorite movies, but I don't know if it'd do HD DVD or BR justice. Even the Criterion Collection DVD doesn't look all that great. But I'd buy it regardless. :)
Looks like the survey is closed now. I would like to have Hard Boiled in HD but I'd love to have The Killer in HD more!

Yes! The Killer would be very nice indeed, IMO that is Woo's masterpiece.

Indeed. The Killer is my favorite action flick by a mile!
Matt_Stevens 10-19-06, 08:06 PM I'd love to have Hard Boiled in HD, but will the soundtrack be the abomination that is the remix available on non-US dvd's? God I hope not. Give me the original mono, which sounds vastly superior. I still have my Criterion CAV laserdisc set.
The Killer is a masterpiece without a proper release in any format.
Ja Phule 10-20-06, 01:12 AM In case you guys are wondering who has the rights to Hard Boiled.... Weinsteins... and we know who they're in bed with.... :)
Hopefully, it'll come to HD DVD sooner rather than later.
Other movies part of the Weinstein's Dragon Dynasty... The Killer, Bullet In the Head, A Better Tomorrow 1 + 2, Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master, Police Story...

Sweet! Good to hear they own some of the great HK flicks and Buena Vista won't be able to get their dirty hands on them in HD.
Matt_Stevens 10-20-06, 09:59 AM Sorry to burst your bubble but the Weinsteins are enemies to all HK film fans in the world. They cut HK films to pieces day in and day out.

Things seem to be changing a little with the new Dragon Dynasty brand. The Weinsteins have hired Bey Logan and Brian White who worked heavily on the UK Hong Kong Legends DVD brand to start the company. Their first release, Kill Zone (aka Sha Pao Lang), seems to have a very nice release (other than the name lame change).

Well, it's been announced for the PS3 with a date of 8/31.. Sony store has a trailer which incidently thanks the Weinstein Brothers for allowing the inclusion of the movie (probably with some compensation besides the thank you).

Now, since it's a Weinstein film and we know that it's been mastered and released on a BD game, when do you think we may see it come out on HD-DVD?
mrwilson 06-12-07, 10:36 PM I wonder if this will be a six month exclusive and then be released on HD-DVD seperately.
jason10mm 06-13-07, 08:19 AM Does anyone know how this film is going to work? I'm assuming it will be on the same disc as the game, correct? Will it work in any BR player, or just the PS3?
This is really a genius move on the game developers part. By slaving the game to a movie, they will drastically reduce the number of trade-ins, as folks will keep the game disc around just for the movie. It also gives Sony a PR piece to spin, even though it is a pretty trivial thing. I can see this becoming commonplace for any possible game/movie tie-in the PS3 can muster. If it keeps the trade-in rate low, why not?
I'd love Hard Boiled as long as I don't have to hard boil the disc to get it to play. ;)
i kid i kid.
SpartanJohnson 06-13-07, 09:08 AM Good news for Blu-ray haters. I just recieved official word from Genius and Weinstein that this movie is standard definition on the Blu-ray game, and not in high definition."

Ktulu_1 06-13-07, 09:30 AM stevenjw, thanks for resurrecting this thread. I went back and read my posts and had a good chuckle.
I have an Xbox 360, intend to buy a PS3, and will not be using PS3 for watching movies.
I now have a PS3 with 21 movies and one game.

SpartanJohnson,
I saw your post over in the BD software section (since I own both formats I check them out and post occasionally.)
All I can say is you must have a thick skin! You gave some of the posters over there news they didn't want to hear. Instead of thanking you for the information they attacked.
Matt_Stevens 06-13-07, 11:11 AM Standard def on BD?!?! OPh my God, I cannot believe this. They went balsy advertising it as being in HD!
Weinstien strikes again. I hate that ******.

Why would anyone thank an unsubstantiated source with no backup, or proof, when documented evidence to the contrary is available and linkable?
The big news out of the event is that due to the extra space that Blu-ray affords, the Collector's Edition of Stranglehold on the PS3 will include Hard Boiled on the disc in full HD. Yes, you read that correctly - John Woo's classic action film starring the one and only Chow Yun Fat will be right there on the disc. We asked a Midway rep about sampling specifics, and while final compression and bit rate stats aren't available on the movie, we do know that it is being re-mastered in high-definition for the transfer. Additionally, it will contain both the original Cantonese language track as well as the English overdubs. If you've seen the movie both ways you know that it's a very different movie when viewed in English, so we're very happy to see both included.

Topweasel 06-13-07, 06:16 PM My question is why can't the Xbox version be a HD DVD/DVD combo it seems to be exactly what it was made for Game on one side HD movie on the other. I would say this is exactly the thing I would hate to see for BD fan. A movie released in HD on a BD but not be compatible with a standalone player because its a tie in with the PS3 just because Sony was able to use it as a trojan horse.
