View Full Version : Most Viewed (also is it because it's) HD DVD, Favorite Chapter for Demo?
Batman Begins is now officially my new Reference/DEMO HD DVD (Training Day & Ray come very close)...even though I liked it after seeing it in the Theaters, I have to admit I rarely watched it on DVD, that I sold it after two weeks! :(
Things change with HD DVD, I find it more interesting/into it...it's now my Most Viewed from my (31) Collection, I've lost count how many time I watched it since it came out! As for my Favorite Chapter, used as a Demo...it's Chapter Five!
Stunning clarity, sharpness & very crisp...the Score in Dolby TrueHD is just outstanding!!! I'm watching it as we speak.
*I'm also expecting cops to show up for Noise (HomeTheater) Disturbance. ;) LOL
Damnationdoormat 10-20-06, 10:37 PM Batman Begins: "I'll get my car" "I've got mine."
'Nuff said. :D
tormond 10-20-06, 10:45 PM Corpse Bride - Scene where he is playing the piano and meats Victoria for the first time. The sound is amazing and pretty much any image from the film is just purely stunning
That Other Guy 10-20-06, 11:00 PM Grand Prix, the first race with all the split screens and the helicopter shots of the cars racing the streets of Monaco.
jefe noche 10-20-06, 11:01 PM It is still the first thing I ever saw on HD-DVD: The opening of Serenity.
candyrocket786 10-21-06, 12:25 AM It is still the first thing I ever saw on HD-DVD: The opening of Serenity.
Damn right! :D
I still can't get over that intro.
serenity: the first shot of the ship... gives me chills every time.
Tim Glover 10-21-06, 02:40 AM serenity: the first shot of the ship... gives me chills every time.
Yes...me too. INCREDIBLE.
gsearles 10-21-06, 07:33 AM I still mostly demo for people using chapters from Van Helsing (Welcome to Transylvania) and Serenity (Caught in the middle). Great stuff, but yes Batman Begins from start to finish is amazing.
Greg
LpChaos 10-21-06, 08:38 AM Batman Begins...Chapter 28...
atagert 10-21-06, 09:58 AM Aeon flux, when aeon and that girl with 4 hands go into the government zone.
adam
HPforMe 10-21-06, 10:26 AM Serenity - at the begnning when the music comes on and the ship turns toward the planet - classic.
Serenity, Caught in the middle chapter for me, although I have not watched a lot of HD-DVD's. This demo not only looks great, but the sound and bass  I feel like the house is going to come down on top of me watching this chapter.
the crane 10-21-06, 11:50 AM Batman Begins, the tumbler chase. nothing I have seen comes close sound and pq wise.
maingon 10-21-06, 03:47 PM the corpse bride is the most amazing thing I have seen yet on my Pansonic AX100U projector on a 92' screen, this is the demo for HD-DVD i will be using for a while, I was blown away at the detail.
ThePrisoner 10-21-06, 03:51 PM Batman Begins: "I'll get my car" "I've got mine."

Took the words right out of my mouth!
boden11 10-21-06, 03:53 PM Aeon Flux -- when Aeon and the Zsathandra cross into the city
Training Day -- when Denzel and Ethan Hawke first get into Denzel's car (and the minutes after that)
Blazing Saddles -- just about any scene !
Swordfish -- when Travolta takes the helicopter down to visit the flyfishin' Senator
F&TF -- any race scene :)
Art Sonneborn 04-01-07, 09:21 AM serenity: the first shot of the ship... gives me chills every time.
The most incredible 45 seconds I have ever seen and heard on a screen !!
Art
cnickersonjr 04-01-07, 10:07 AM Training Day -- when Denzel and Ethan Hawke first get into Denzel's car (and the minutes after that)
Yes, this black car looks so good in HD. You can count the rain drops!

primetimeguy 04-01-07, 10:17 AM Don't have the movie above but is it just me or does the aspect ratio look off in the pic. Everything looks stretched vertically.
alpha21 04-01-07, 10:20 AM ^ That was the first film I watch on my XA1
I specifically remember that exact shot, how the car came towards the camera, with such clarity, that it looked like it was coming out of the screen! My jaw dropped!! Instantly made buyer's remorse a non issue
Shadowknight 04-01-07, 10:43 AM I found BB to be too well lit for my tastes. As to my "reference" stuff, I'd say the opening view of The Thing, when the helicoptor is chasing the dog. The ice fields are breathtaking. From BB, any night shots of the city from overhead. Just beautiful.
cnickersonjr 04-01-07, 10:45 AM Don't have the movie above but is it just me or does the aspect ratio look off in the pic. Everything looks stretched vertically.
No it's a combo of the movie's camera angle, and the angle of my camera!
My choice may change but, right now, it's the opening of The Searchers, just after the credits.
gmoney80 04-01-07, 12:21 PM I Totally Agree With Serenity, But Also The Beginning Of Superman Returns The Soundtrack Is Amazing.
CalgaryCowboy 04-01-07, 12:28 PM A couple different ones. King King T-rex Kong fight. It tells a complete story and has the adreline rush and audio to match. Troy- The first battle scene the audio on the spear through makes me look to see where I lands in my room.
larryep 04-01-07, 03:13 PM king kong falling off the empire state building.
Shadowknight 04-01-07, 03:14 PM Troy- The first battle scene the audio on the spear through makes me look to see where I lands in my room.
I'm hoping the Toothbrush scene (http://break.com/index/300_the_pg_remix.html?playall=1) in 300 has a similar effect, except I feel like he's leaping at me and about to forcibly clean my teeth.
king kong falling off the empire state building.
Spoiler!! :p
RabidRob 04-01-07, 07:08 PM T3 the 1st chapter where he has a vision of the future and you see the army of T-800's advancing. one of them turns to face you and fills the screen. it looks like its going to step out of the screen into the room, Always gets a great reaction from people
hconwell 04-01-07, 07:14 PM The launch scene in "Apollo 13". Always a crowd pleaser.
vanilla rice 04-01-07, 07:34 PM Corpse Bride, the HT Grail. it starts off with really sharp credits as a teaser, then you get the texture of the pages as a tease, then the hand with the pen gives you a glimpse... HOO wah!!! :) the butterfly coming from under the glass is amazing.
Superman Returns - The Plane Crash scene. The PQ is pretty damn good but the AQ is completely and utterly out of this world. Every time I demo that scene to someone they are literally sitting on the edge of their seat. It's why I fell in love with TruHD.
rover2002 04-01-07, 09:03 PM Pirates - lesbian scene
King Kong - T-rex scene
The Last Samurai - Fight in the forrest before T.Crusie is taken
Serenity - Space battle at the end
Grand Prix - Beginig race scene
Hulk - After escaping from desert complex
Constantine - Scene where we see him go into hell
There are many many more great demo scenes in nearly all the HD-DVD titles :)
Most of the island parts of Kong get "ohh's and ahh's"
Damn near all of Happy Feet should impress even the toughest critic
The gatling gun battle scene in Samurai for sound is amazing IMO.
The scenic shots in Unforgiven
A bunch of Batman Begins
Many others...even the opening railroad workers scene in Blazing Saddles is sweet. :)
FatiusJeebs 04-01-07, 10:14 PM Of the movies i own.....its either Happy Feet.....or Sky Captain. Both of those movies look astonishing on my big screen. Exactly what chapter??? I'll get ack to you on that one.
lgans316 04-01-07, 10:24 PM King Kong - It's show-off time after 64 minutes !!!
What a PQ...Just amazing...Kudos to Universal.
Bull1962 05-05-07, 08:31 AM Well I know this is not mainstream but T2 Extreme DVD upconverted on my Toshiba is my 5 minute and under demo disc...the sound is simply suberb and PQ is pretty good with the upconvert.
My HD DVD DEMO disc from Toshiba still holds up as the best reference material for my theater...
mikethewxguy 05-05-07, 10:46 AM I'm sure it's been said before...
KING KONG - The Empire State Building scene at the end (w/the airplanes)
nickelplayer6 05-05-07, 11:08 AM batman begins for audio, and king kong(either the sacrifice to kong or the trex battle) for video
MauneyM 05-05-07, 01:46 PM Grand Prix - Race sequences from Monaco and Spa. This is just incredible footage to begin with, and it needs HD to get the point across.
Corpse Bride. Any part of it, except for the cheesy jazz tune......
stuart81 05-05-07, 03:32 PM Aeon flux, when aeon and that girl with 4 hands go into the government zone.
adam
Yeah that is pretty nice. I also like the opening scene from Corpse Bride.
blackssr 05-05-07, 07:02 PM I bet the Matrix "Lobby Scene" will be everyones new favorite when it hits the streets in a couple of weeks.
I also bet if Saving Private Ryan (the first 20 minutes) ever hits that will out do even the Matrix for demo material.

I dont' really know what all the fuzz is about Batman. IMO the transfer is waaaaay overrated. Titles like Chronicles of Riddick, King Kong and Happy Feet are much much better.
BandofBrothers 05-06-07, 12:05 PM is it possible to get a toshiba hd-dvd sample\showcase disc in the UK?
if so, I need details :D :D
Rob Tomlin 05-06-07, 12:15 PM I'm sure it's been said before...
KING KONG - The Empire State Building scene at the end (w/the airplanes)
I agree.
What's also cool about this is the fact that you can queue up the movie at the part when Kong breaks free from the theater, and just play the rest of the movie from there. This lets your guests get a good feel for the movie, as well as enjoy superb demo material!
Rob Tomlin 05-06-07, 12:18 PM Grand Prix - Race sequences from Monaco and Spa. This is just incredible footage to begin with, and it needs HD to get the point across.
Very cool! Glad to see someone else uses this as demo material. I use this disc for demo a lot too. One thing that makes it great demo material is it gives you the chance to show people how good older classic titles can look in HD!
sean111 05-07-07, 10:15 AM opening scene of superman returns. also the scene where the jet liner is crashing. several scenes from aeon flux or sahara. the launch in apollo 13. when i think about great demo material, i look for something that sucks the viewer in. i.e. the whole package. sound, clarity of picture, emotion. the whole experience.
edcokpareke 05-07-07, 12:09 PM I have too many picks, but I'd recommend this cuz I just saw it yesterday, and its still fresh in my mind.
Smokin' Aces:
Georgia Sykes (Alicia Keyes) is trapped in an elevator with 2 dead dudes, and several cops waiting outside with guns drawn.
"Bring it!!" she says to Sharice (Taraji Henson). At that point, Sharice lets the .50 cal sniper rifle fly. For the next minute, the audio & video sensations explode...literally.
Until the disc comes to halt and my player freezes.... the silence is deafening...
cyberbri 05-07-07, 04:28 PM Some of the King Kong scenes.
But I'm young (relatively speaking), so I also use the first parking garage scene from Tokyo Drift (colors, detail, lots o bass and lots o lovely ladies).
Lonely Surfer 05-07-07, 04:34 PM Monument Valley scenes in The Searchers.
Jack Gilvey 05-07-07, 04:39 PM I'm sure it's been said before...
KING KONG - The Empire State Building scene at the end (w/the airplanes)
Yeah, that and the T-Rex battle are mine. The NYC vistas blown up on my 2.35 screen are absolutely stunning.
luigionlsd 05-07-07, 04:48 PM I'll third the opening credit sequence to Superman Returns. I've never actually heard it in surround sound (never saw it at the theater), but I have a strong feeling it will be the first experience once I get my own 5.1 setup. Also, the entire movie of Serenity just makes me happy. Quite possibly my hands down, favorite HD DVD I own.
cyberbri 05-07-07, 04:58 PM I might have to check out Serenity again sometime. I didn't care much for the movie on DVD, even though I normally like sci-fi, but the PQ looks to be amazing in HD.
Quintz71 12-08-07, 11:18 PM almost what ever movie is in the player at the time.... LOL
From the fire in Backdraft... the ice scene in Batman Begins... to all of the in flight footage on Top Gun...
lgans316 12-08-07, 11:24 PM 1) King Kong - After the 65 mins mark
2) Hot Fuzz
3) Matrix
4) Tokyo Drift
5) Face/Off - Audio
6) Transformers
Guilty pleasures
1) Starship Troopers
2) Air Force One
shadowrage 12-09-07, 02:01 AM Children of Men.
The whole damn thing for film making. Story telling. Sharpness, detail, 3D pop. Sound clarity and sound design.
That whole last urban warfare thing is just as thrilling as SPR beach sequence. Not to mention the openening sequence and the hillside attack(It's all one take).
Wouldn't it be nice if you can group all your favorite demo scenes onto one disc, preserving the PQ and AQ. As it stands now, it takes almost 3 minutes to switch to another scene on another disc, so for all pracitcal purposes you can only demo one scene before the guests become restless.
BTW this is something I have wanted to do for my favorite songs from the various HDM concert discs.
solfan68 02-29-08, 03:51 PM Great thread. As a recent convertee, I'm now scrambling to decide what I need to own before stock dries up.
natecorn 03-01-08, 11:15 AM For me, there's a very specific shot in Chronicles of Riddick that is unbelievable. When they are running across the prison planet, and the sun is beginning to rise, someone turns around and you see the reflection of the sun in their eyes...get the chills every time i see it. Not to mention the sweat going down the guys cheek at the same time. Just awesome.
I turned on the Matrix Reloaded this morning and the first 5 minutes were breathtaking. For a movie with a lot of CGI and special effects I was blown away at how clear and real it looked.
I own some other movies listed in this thread but haven't checked those out.
