Buy any of the following Toshiba HD-DVD players : HD-A1, HD-XA1, HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-XA2, HD-D2.

The only ones that we havent heard of are the HD-D2 which is obviously the Wal-Mart RCA second gen and the HD-A2W.

This has been the best guess I have seen so far. Mabey it is a version of the A-2 with the 5.1 outs. ......

I can hope right ?

Serisouly, I agree that it may be their 360 add-on, or perhaps a designation for their laptop drive...

We still havent found out what this drive is. It is NOT the Wal Mart drive and almost certainly NOT the 360 drive.

It's the Blu-ray model. Didn't you get the memo?

My best guess:
A2 with 5.1 or A2 with 1080P (no 5.1), or an A2 without Component, Svideo, or Composite Connections for a $299-$349.

This offer does not apply to the Toshiba-built RCA HDV5000, but it does include the HD-A2W we haven't seen before; Toshiba tells us its not an entirely new model but a limited club edition like the HD-D1. ---->ENGADGET

I believe you are the winner!

I just picked up the HD-A2W from walmart yesterday so I guess the W stands for walmart. From the pictures of the standard version I have seen it looks to be the exact same color "not white". Just a heads up for someone wanting to pick up one of these with the next best return policy around (90 days no questions asked). I picked up the D1 last time around and I am glad I did because mine skipped, lost sync and was just "buggy". Also I couldn't live with the HDMI handshake problem of not being able to switch to another source without restarting the player. This second gen model is much better so far (after 1 day). I plan on keeping it or maybe upgrading to the XA2 with the 5.1 outs.Eric

Does the HD-A2W have an HDMI output? Does it "upconvert" to 1080i? I plan on bidding on an HD-A2W on Ebay, but haven't been able to find any information on this particular model. How much are they going for at Walmart?

Why would they make a walmart version seems odd. Why not just sell the regular model. Being its the same price.

Prehapps it has to do with their price matching. In which said price match or deal must be the same. So if BB,CC runs a deal walmart won't have to match.

I just hope none of the parts are cheeper. A lot like some of their other stuff. Like ILO and such

I think you hit the nail on the head. Same reason Pioneer plasma tv model numbers at BB end in a "1" versus the everywhere else model that ends in a "0."

It has to do with the volume buying that Wal-Mart does. Several manufacturers make models for Walmart and Costco. A lot of the time, the Costco or Walmart version is stripped down or last years model.

I don't believe it has anything to do with using it as a loophole to price matching. It has more to do with electronics manufacturers providing deals to their big box retailers that benefits the retailer with increased margin, the consumer with a decreased price, and the manufacturer with being able to liquidate year old technology.

Something else to think about is that when a firmware is available it may not be available for these quasi models for months later if at all. Just ask the RCA owners from first gen.

True in the case of the RCA but not with this model. This model is the same as the A2 including the Toshiba name. I Doubt Toshiba would treat this model any different including upgrades.

Cool Wal-mart version.

Guess they will be sold at the largest mass merchant in the country.

BTW, didn't the Toshiba firmware work just fine in the rebadged RCA's?

Maxx_75

Yes I think that it did work on the RCA's. It did change a few thinks like the display when it boots ect. But I doubt that bothers many.

However I think that you had to get the disk. It wouldnt download from the ethernet port. So that takes alot of J6P out as far as getting it.

Actually, it is more about the pricing than what is in them. It protects the other retailerss from Wal-mart's buying power. You can't go to a local dealer and ask them to price match since it is a different model

I actually saw one of these(hd-a2w) at walmart a few days ago. I assumed it was just a hd-a2 and thought when they rang it up, it would come up with a $98 price or cheaper, but it wasn't I think it rang up at $149.99(the price as the a3 they had there). Does anybody have any idea what this is? Is it exactly the same as the a2 and if not, what's different?

This is the A2 I got when they had the $98 sale back in November. Aside from my original A2 being from Japan and this one being from China, this looks like an exact clone in every respect. Firmware discs that I get for my original A2 work for this one. No difference. Probably at most the model differentiations are simply to tell where the player was purchased when you submit warranty/offers for Toshiba's internal records.

As far as the RCA being mentioned in this thread, nothing wrong with them at all. I picked up 2 last year for $71 and $150 new in boxes. Knowing to look for that model saved quite a bit of cash. Loaded up Toshiba firmware and they work great.

It is exactly the same as the A2. I would probably get it over the A3, even though it doesn't come with the 2 movies in the box.

That's what I figured, but what's the the 'W' then....also...I wonder why its more than the ones that they released before xmas...

It could indicate that the unit was sold through Wal-Mart. Many Wal-Mart electronics items have the "W" following the usual model number.
