Are PC games High Def?

Is a computer 19" LCD monitor HD? I have a Sony LCD monitor is it considered HD?
it is not a LCD TV.

I was allways confused if games running at high rez like 1280*1024 are HD?


Is this considred to be as high quailty as 720p?

Computer monitors are in a different class. They can be HD-capable or even display HD natively, but I wouldn't consider them HDTVs.

Most consumers just get a buzz out of the term "HD" since it's slapped on most everything nowadays. Fact of the matter is, PC monitors have been spitting out high resolutions for the longest time.

You shouldn't worry about a computer monitor being "HD." They are always gonna display a high resolution.

720p= 1280 x 720 So 1280 x 1024 is pushing more pixels than 720p.
Like Scotty says, "HD" is a great buzz word.

The question of wether or not pc games can do "HD" comes up a lot on this forum. The fact is computer games have done "HD" resolutions for more than a decade. The higher the resolution, the more taxing on the system, but it can do it.

The real question is does it support widescreen? 16:9 aspect ratio is part of the HD spec and is usually what people mean when they ask this question. Does a game natively support high resolution and widescreen, or, HD for short.

Not to be rude, but HD may imply widescreen, but it is certainly not part of the HD spec., something which doesn't exist anyway.
But to answer the fundamental question, 1280x1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio and is most certainly high definition. It's already been pointed out that 12x10 contains a lot more pixels than 12x7 (720P), which is considered the low end of HD.

I think a good way to sum it up is, yes, PC games are HD and most games these days support a wide screen resolution like 1280 x 800, and even 1920 x 1200. You just need a system capable of pushing out high enough framerates at that resolution.

PCs have done high res for YEARS. TVs haven't . Now TV technology advanced so much, and TV are capable to display 1920x1080p, 720p, companies had to distinguish them from regular low res TVs. They came up with High Definition.

16:9 and DD 5.1 are part of the HD spec, as well as the resolutions of 1080i and 720p. Yes, you are playing at high resolutions, but not HD. High Definition is not a qualifier as in it is higher res than other things. "High Definition" is rather the specific spec that has been mentioned. Many call 1080p High Definition, but it is something different and a higher resolution. There is no HDTV broadcast(true HDTV is broadcast) in 1080p

in summary
1280x1080 is a high resolution, but not HD. That doesn't make it bad or lower than HD. to play at a High Definition(again, not a measure of greatness, but something specific) set your resolutions to 1080i or 720p in the game and you will experience HD in the game.

Keep in mind, we've all been using 480i televisions if you're in the US. Actual broadacasts in 1080i or 720p are incredible in comparison. I know the numbers themselves aren't impressive in computer terms, but as far as a broadcast goes, they are absolutely incredible and are close to the limit of what the human eye can distinguish. Sports are night and day, and action dramas take on new dimension in 5.1 surround. Again, not impressive in computer terms, but keep in mind that progressive scan DVD is only 480p.

Some games will run widescreen with tweaking, others run widescreen as a built-in option.

New computer: 2560x1600 Dell 30 inch LCD monitor (HDCP compliant).

Driven by: Dual 8800GTX SLI mode, 2GB Dominator memory, Intel QUAD CORE, 750 GB Seagate drive, dual Plextor SATA optical drives, etc....

SCREW THE PS3!!!!! What a overhyped WEAK AZZ product, struggling with 1080p... The Cell is so overhyped. PS3 would have been a good deal if you could get at least 60FPS at 1080p consistently... Stupid Sony... $600 is a good deal, but it doesn;t live up to the hype at all.

I like to think of my PC monitor as fullscreen HD. :D I've been running my 19" CRT since 1998 at 1280x1024 resolution, which is pretty much the same as 720p HD, only more resolution vertically. It can do 1:1 pixel mapping of standard 720p programming in this respect.

I just just bought a PS3 last week. Haven't turned it on yet cause having fun with new computer, however, I'm sure it will perform well at 1080p... Seems like everybody who owns one is very happy with it. Stacey Spears gave it a great technical review and it must be the best bang for the buck. For $500-600 and the latest reviews, including software upgradeability make the PS3 a no brainer. In fact, I'm headed to San Fran in a few days and I don't have a laptop, so I'm going to take the PS3 and load Windows XP on it and buy a 45 inch Sony 1080p LCD to use for the two months I'm out there.

You can load another operating system on the PS3. It really is a great deal. It is a good computer in addition to a 'PS3'.

PS3s are ppc, not x86

You would have to load XP in wine or something, and it wouldn't work as well as you might think.

YDL would work pretty well for email and internet, but any win-centric apps would be problematic.

Yea sorry to rain or your parade but you're not going to slap a windows XP disc in there and install it. Like other mentioned you can run a Windows emulator inside Linux but unless you're a Linux user the PS3 is a poor replacement for a PC.

And yes PC has been capable of 1280x720, 1920x1080 and beyond for years and years. Now your limiting factor is probably your monitor as most people, myself included, have dumped their CRT's in the garbage and are now gaming on fixed pixel LCD monitors. (1680x1050 on my 22" widescreen, and 1920x1200 on my 24" widescreen)
