View Full Version : Games people are playing right now!
UT2k4 - Even after 3 years it's still the best multiplayer FPS out there for my money, Onslaught is WAY more fun than any Battlefield franchise game.
Oblivion - Archmage, head of the Fighter's Guild and Thieves' Guild, still working my way through the Dark Brotherhood and main quest lines and starting to play around with mods. I still catch my breath occasionally, at 1080p with full details the game is simply *stunning*.
Galactic Civilizations 2 - Fantastic space strategy, a deep DEEP game with huge replay value and very easy on the hardware.
DEFCON - Global Thermonuclear War from Wargames, on the big screen with high def sound it's COMPLETELY absorbing! A great, "simple" RTS that anyone can appreciate.
Darwinia - A completely different cyberspace RTS that I'm still working through, very very cool!
Uplink - Can you tell I like Introvision? Great hacker-type simulation/RTS game, although it's not really well suited to the big screen.
MAME - 'nuff said!
CCS64 - Playing Commodore 64 games on the big screen against friends connected over the internet is a vision I dared not dream as a kid in 1983!
Games I played through and uninstalled:
Prince of Persia 2/3 - #2 sucked (terrible camera, "aggro" Prince with tats and bad language, stupid soundtracl) but 3 was fun, and it's amazing the sheer number of ways the Prince can move once you learn how!
F.E.A.R. - Overhyped, and I hate those artifically dark graphics engines. If you've played Doom 3 and seen The Grudge, then you know exactly how F.E.A.R. will play.
Half-Life 2 - The first 30 minutes are the best single player FPS I've ever played, but some stretches in the middle with the boat and car are distracting.
HL2 Episode One - Huge graphics improvement, very nice environments but finished a bit too quickly.
World of Warcraft - Gets boring at 60 unless you feel like spending 20 hours a week raiding. I have a job already, thanks!
Of all these I would say DEFCON is the best game on the list for playing on an HTPC, as I can control everything with my Gyration mouse, and it's meant to look like the Big Board from Wargames or Dr. Strangelove so it works well on the big screen. Let's hear it from you guys, what's out there that's worth playing, and what works especially well on the big screen?

Not true.
Good thread but I just had to disagree with you on this.
FEAR owns Doom 3 without any effort. Turn the brightness up. ;)
The gameplay, AI, variety, you name it: This isn't even close IMO.
The gameplay feels better and responds way better and simply IS better in FEAR than Doom 3 by miles.
FEAR is one of the best FPS's I've ever played, period.

Yes Q is correct, FEAR is simply one of the best FPS to come along in years. My only complaints are that it's too short, and too easy even on the hardest setting. Gameplay was beyond excellent as well as graphics. FEAR to me was what Max Payne 2 could have been.
The game I play the most is Halo multiplayer. It's 3 years old now, but still has the most awesome multiplayer experience going. The game's aiming system takes a lifetime to master. That is why I love it.

Wow, you're a stud or something.
That AI is an exquisite, truly next gen work of art.
I sure as heck didn't think it was too easy anywhere near that difficulty level.
Whew!
The folks that aren't into PC gaming that are going to get a crack at this thing on the Xbox360 and/or PS3 are truly in for something they've never seen before.

I'm glad you can make FSX work because I couldn't, what's your secret?
Here's a post I made on the FSX forum after I bought retail:
" My machine is reasonably powerful (FX55, 7800 GTX OC, 2GB PC4200 OCZ RAM, dual 74GB WD Raptors in RAID 0) and I can't believe how bad the frame rates in FSX are, even after applying the known tweaks and adjusting just about all the sliders in the game to improve the situation. As a comparison, I play Oblivion with full details at about 50fps, and that's a game which is stunningly gorgeous in virtually every scene, whereas with full details in FSX I can barely get 10fps, and that's sitting at Pearson International and looking out the window at a scene with maybe 5% of the graphic complexity of the typical Oblivion environment!
While I think you can make a case for realism, I think you can also design a game cleverly so that it will perform well on your average user's machine! For example when I fire up full details in FSX, I see single-pixel dots on the horizon which gradually resolve themselves into fully polygonal trees, along with fully rendered shadows. Compare that with Oblivion's use of SpeedTree technology (see http://www.speedtree.com/gallery/screenshot.php?Game=42&Pic=7 for an example of SpeedTree in action in Oblivion), which uses clever optimizations to render individual leaves and blades of grass which all sway independently in the breeze and so forth, but without using 90% of your CPU to do so (and I think you'll agree the end results with SpeedTree results are MUCH prettier than the trees in FSX).
If only the FSX designers had put the same sort of effort into their rendering optimizations as their flight models, instead of taking the easy way out and just cranking up the polygons and expecting user's machines to cope. While I'm sure upcoming patches will introduce performance enhancements, I strongly doubt they'll be able to correct what appear to be fundamental design choices on the part of the dev team, so I wouldn't expect dramatic speed increases in upcoming patches.
What a shame!"
I was REALLY looking forward to buying some flight controls and all the rest for FSX too, guess I'll have to wait for a sim from Ubisoft or another developer that knows how to make games look great AND run smoothly.

Sorry, what I meant was that F.E.A.R. featured the visual style of Doom 3 with the horror element of The Grudge. I personally hate those artificially dark engines where a flashlight only works to 10 feet and shadows are pitch-blac; they're not realistic and turning up the gamma just makes the darkness a lighter shade, it doesn't let you see anything more.
I agree the AI was excellent, but personally I don't really care, it just means I might die a bit more than in a game with a simpler AI. If I want a challenge I'll take it online against some human opponents. :)
What I really bought F.E.A.R. for was the horror angle, I like Silent Hill et al but those games don't have enough action for me. And while the concept was great and the early execution was promising, it quickly became nothing more than "turn the corner, see the ghost" all the way up until the vault levels (which were very cool).
Of course maybe it just means the game wasn't exactly right for *me*, but mine is the only opinion I've got to give! :D

I never got into UT much, so I can't compare really.
It's hard to explain, but you must lead your shots quite a bit in Halo, plus deal with varying degrees of lead time based upon people's connection speeds. The game does support dialup, which can really throw things into crazy mode. The game is dominated by the pistol, which has a steep steep learning curve. You don't shoot unless you know it will be a hit. The pistol is only accurate when shot slowly, but you still have to get hits before you get killed. It takes a lot of practice to get good, and takes tremendous practice to become excellent. The game is amazing simply because of the difficulty level. It's easy to pick up, but almost impossible to truly master. Since Halo is dominated by the pistol, and everyone begins with one, it's the great equalizer. There are more powerful close range weapons, like rocket launchers and grenades, but as long as you have a pistol, you can dominate everyone. Headshots are so important, but not easy to get.
With other games, it's often about dominating areas of maps, or collecting the proper weapons or vehicles. While this is somewhat true in Halo, since everyone begins with a pistol, and it's the best weapon of the game, it's a very equal playing field and you win or lose based upon skill, not items. The game is freakin sick.

Cool, UT features "lag lead" like any other online FPS, but the default weapon is pretty pathetic and can't be used to dominate, even if you're botting to get 100% accuracy. I'll have to give it a try on the PC sometime!

I'm playing the FEAR expansion pack while I wait for the patch to make Dark Messiah actually playable.
The FEAR expansion pack is basically the rest of the original game, which is a good thing. Excellent expansion pack that gives you basically more of the same with a few new weapons and some more multiplayer wrinkles. If you're a big fan of it, like I am, you're thrilled.

My wife's away on training for her new job, so based on some of the recommendations in this thread I just picked up R-Factor, GTR2, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Serious Sam 2 and Virtual Skipper 4 (ok, I came up with that one on my own). My Sondigo Inferno (http://www.sondigo.com/inferno) just came in too, so it should be a great week of high-def surround sound gaming! :D

Thanks, I definitely try to keep the selection broad as there are so many great games out there in different genres, I could play FPS games 24/7 but then I'd miss out on something beautiful like Planescape or Dreamfall!
I'm going to try my hand at some sims next, first driving (R-Factor and GTR2) and sailing (Virtual Skipper 4), then some combat strategy sims like Harpoon ANW, Dangerous Waters and TacOps 4. I'll let you guys know which ones stick!

Marvel Ultimate Alliance, GTR2 and rFactor all showed up yesterday (well, rFactor was downloaded from their site) but no Serious Sam 2 for some reason. I'll keep you posted!
The only one I really got to play was MUA, and it's ok so far - I know more of the characters than your average Joe (i.e. I know stuff like the backstories of Galactus and the Silver Surfer) but I'm not a huge comics fan so being able to play these characters isn't the thrill of a lifetime like it it for some. The gameplay seems pretty straightforward (think Diablo with superheroes), and the "RPG" elements seem limited to buying upgrades for your characters using cash and experience, in other words straight-forward unlocks (unlike an RPG with nonlinear gameplay and lots of options on how to make money or gain powers). The graphics are nice but I think they gimped the PC version, I saw it playing on an XBox 360 version and it looked much nicer (and I'm playing on full details at 1080p).
I hear there are cooler bosses and environments later on in the game so I'll keep at it, but I'll likely play through it once and EBay it. Any takers? ;)

I must be a loser.. I'm still playing Quake1 :) I have played it since 1996, and never really stopped. Still the best FPS ever made.
Other than that, I was really getting into CoD2 multi player when I decided to install the newest patch, realized no servers were running it, uninstalled the game, reinstalled, and found I had no idea where the CD key was!!
So then a friend of mine made me buy Day of Defeat Source to play with him, but I found that I liked CS:S better since the guns actually fire where I'm aiming, so I've been playing that :) Gun Game anyone?
Dark Messiah, picked it up post patch. I've been really happy with it so far.

For any Battlefield 2 guys out there I've been playing Point of Existence 2 which is a great mod (and totally free).
Tactical Gamer has a server up all the time that gets some good games. Obviously it's very squad based on their server but this game offers some great and very different gameplay versus the stock vanilla game. A number of maps don't have vehicles or very limited vehicles. There are plenty with lots of vehicles and airpower but it's a nice mix of play. Great maps, tweaked kits, lots of different terrain (like snow and forrest squad based combat).
Highly recommended and free for anyone who has BF2. It's a really well done mod and frankly I'm amazed there aren't a ton more servers going that way. IMO it's a better game, at least for how I like to play.

Right Now -
Nothing on the PC
Last game I played on it was LFS demo
Since then I have changed things around in here and have yet to set the wheel back up.
On PS2 -
GTA3: 35% (50% special missons done)
GT4: See Driving Misson 34 thread on GT Planet, that's all that needs to be said about it...
TOCA 3: Only Online driving game I have, horribly tricky car control system doesn't have me picking it up very much.
My PC game collection is relatively small,
but these are the games i play in the order
I play the most:
1. City of Heroes
2. City of Villains
3. Star Wars: Empire at War
4. D&D Dragonshard
5. Star Trek Armada I & II
6. Lineage II
7. Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
8. Sword of the Stars
9. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident

RTCW and LFS are nice!
All this "waiting for Crysis" stuff is retarded. We are too obsessed with graphics quality!
There are so many great PC games. Honestly a great PC game that came out 3 years ago that you never checked out will still be a great game today!
I'm gonna try to get back into RTCW. To me it was the ultimate multi player shooter. The amount of violence you see go down in that game is insance. Like for example the docs room on the beach map. Holy ****.
And then I might try to fire up Battlefield Vietnam. The best of the BF series in my opinion by far. The maps on 1942 and BF2 don't have the dense jungle environments of Vietnam which made it great. More hand to hand combat. Not this running from walkers BS in BF2.

UT2k4 - Even after 3 years it's still the best multiplayer FPS out there for my money, Onslaught is WAY more fun than any Battlefield franchise game.
Except that the bots are too stupid to help you progress in the single player game....
Prince of Persia 2/3 - #2 sucked (terrible camera, "aggro" Prince with tats and bad language, stupid soundtracl) but 3 was fun, and it's amazing the sheer number of ways the Prince can move once you learn how!
I loved part two, it was dark and menacing and the emphasis on combat as well as acrobatics was fantastic. One is a boring, boring game by comparioson...killing the same enemy 25 times before they finally "Disappear", enemies that respawn right around you endlessly....at least in Part 2 the enemies stayed dead once you killed them. I swear I've fought the same creature for 20 minutes in PoP:SoT as he dies, I "absorb his sand", and then poof..same creature re-appears...again...and again...and again...and again..a.nd again...and...
F.E.A.R. - Overhyped, and I hate those artifically dark graphics engines. If you've played Doom 3 and seen The Grudge, then you know exactly how F.E.A.R. will play.
Brightness control, use it. Fear should never be too dark to see, it should only have some dark shadowy areas. FEAR was the most innovative FPS since Half Life 2, and I haven't had this much fun dispatching enemies in years. Doom III/ Quake 4, etc...all pale by comparison.
Half-Life 2 - The first 30 minutes are the best single player FPS I've ever played, but some stretches in the middle with the boat and car are distracting.
The first 30 minutes you do nothing but walk around with a crowbar and escape the city, you're telling me this is the best FPS you've ever played? Try when you break back INTO the city, fully loaded with implements o' destruction....now thats fun.

WoW. That's all my little laptop can handle. Hopefully within a year or so I will build my own desktop and then I'll actually be able to finish Half-Life 2 without having the game screw up due to my hardware not being able to keep up.

Just finished "Company of Heroes" single player missions and damn it is an exciting game. Awesome graphics and a decent AI coupled with the World War II theme which just makes it impossible to stop midway.
Do check this game out.

I want to play Stalker, but I can't get it to run in vista. Hard locks my machine everytime.
Just bought the first three Splinter Cells for 12 bucks total and have been playing a lot of Mount & Blade.

+1 for Company of Heroes, I love the sound of this game. Especially the sherman tank when zoomed in. It rumbles the hell out of my room and the freakin arty strike is awesome. I'm stuck at Hill 317 atm. This level is frustrating.

Old thread, but still applicable, LOL! :)
Just playing BF2142 these days. Was playing Oblivion, but as soon as I saw those paper-cut-out rats moving around, I uninstalled it and never played it again. That was 6 months ago.

I can't get EOD 2 to work on my box..I can launch it, but the minute i click on multiplayer..CTD. I can't believe they released a mod with such a crappy installer and that I can't get it to run...grr!!
still playing BF2/2142. Been playing Supreme Commander (playing thru all the diff faction's campaigns) and Stalker (2nd time around but at Master and getting wacked at the highest diff level). Also tried the demo of ArmA (it sux's).
just got TDU a few weeks ago. Pretty fun. I'm LimeyWnkr in 2142, TDU, and i think in GTR2.
So I've got BioShock going on the 360 and just received Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii from GameFly. Both are great games, but for some reason I downloaded Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (http://dawnofwargame.com/homepage.php) from Steam....
And now I'm hooked playing the poor-man's Warcraft! :o Just when I thought I was over PC games in favor of consoles, I've got two games-of-the-year sitting downstairs in the HT and I'm at the computer desk playing a PC game I ignored last year.
...and I don't even care for RTS games either! I don't know what the deal is, but I'm hooked. Why does this happen???
BioShock baby!!! Scares the crap out of me!!! Play with the lights off.

Bioshock,Flatout 2,CNC3 and since I built the new system and got a new 24" monitor I've decided to try and start Doom 3 over and finish it this time :D
Of course I went to Fry's this morning and got Moto GP 07 for the 360 and since they were cheap I got these for the PC. Prey and Star Wars Battlefront II.
Not enough hours in the day ;)

Just finished HL2 episode 1 and now having tons of fun with Dirt and very soon Bioshock. I was going to buy dirt for the 360 as well as Bioshock(video card not top notch-ATI x1950xt 256MB) but I just find the correct settings to make them look really amaizing on 1080p and a friend of mine gave them to me for free after finishing both so no question there:D.
I've been hammering away at dirt on the 360 and now bioshock on the pc. Today I will get Airbourne and hopefully it will not suck LOL

PGR3, with the wheel, learning how to play this game in a completely different way, and its great fun. More fun, IMHO, than Forza...which is more accurate, but also more worky-boring.....you have to be into the mood for serious racing for Forza, but PGR3 is great in-cockpit with the wheel for breakneck racing.
In preparation for PGR4

+3 on Company of Heroes being the greatest RTS ever.......watching veterans die because you make a stupid tactical error is enough to send one into depression.
THANKFULLY WE CAN RELOAD :)

Bought the import version of MotoGP 07 for the PC from Gogamer. A little trickey setting up the X-Box 360 controller in the game but it works fine now. Game has widescreen support so 1920x1200 on the 24" Dell wasn't a problem. Graphics look great and I'm really having a good time playing this on the PC. :D
Take a look at it if you want a motorcycle racing game on your PC.
