Anyone know if this is planned for release anytime early next year?

Yes. It is in the plan. There is a thread on it around here somewhere with this on the list.

I'm guessing January. 40 Year Old Virgin along with American Pie, Conan the Barbarian, Dante's Peak and The Blues Brothers are still M.I.A. from Universal's promised titles. I would think these all will be the next couple waves from them.

One of the few comedies I will rebuy in HD (along with American Pie). The DVD transfers on both are pretty meh, so I hope that they really make this one look good.

Oh wow, I am so excited. Blu-Ray is getting Casino Royale, The Prestige, PotC, and PotC2 over the next 4 months, and what does HD-DVD have to show for it... 40 Year Old Virgin... Wow, that is such great competition. Blu-Ray is doomed now.

"&*(^% her, and then she'll send you a check for $12 dollars on your birthday" :p

"You know how I know you're gay"

Such a classic, if you cant enjoy 40y.o. Virgin, you don't have a sense of humor.

Or you don't like pointless comedies. Sorry, I like intelligent comdies that aren't dry. Still, nothing can be as bad as Napoleon Dynamite and Scary Movie 2.

and this is why I am not worried I am sure they will start to "ramp up" production of titles and people need to remember just because they haven't announced EVERY one of those titles doesn't mean they are not coming to us. Les all be patient I am sure there are still MANY surprises that ahve yet to be announced.

Hey now, don't taunt the Blu-Ray fanboy. It's not his fault his format of choice has region restrictions.

Pretty funny movie. Not something i'd like to own in HD right now though. Maybe when they end up in those sale bins for like 9.99. :)

Also, why is it that people complain about the price of blu-rays (even though in most cases they're cheaper than HD DVD's) but have no problems importing HD DVD's at a premium price?

Depends on the volume of importing. If it's a couple here and there, you're still saving a ton of money versus going BR. I did the math on the HD DVDs that I bought versus comparable BR and the difference in price of a player and I'd have to buy something like 30 imports to even up the score as it is.

I'm sorry, you must be new here, but I'm allowed to speak **** **** about either format as I own BOTH. ;)

Ph8te, that is a nice list, but the only movies in there I care about are The Game and Eternal Sunshine. I'm getting The Departed for BR since it is a combo. As for importing, I am not doing that anymore, as it is too much of a hassle, and the cases are not the same cases we get here.

I just ordered several HD DVDs from Amazon.fr for $31.75/disc (average INCLUDES 1-5 day shipping!). Yeah, that's a tough choice!...a few bucks more here and there or an immediate outlay of $700+?

What I find more confusing is people who would rather buy a second player and a second format when the same variety of content is available on one format if you just look a little harder... ;)

Yeah, owning both formats doesn't give you carte blanche to incite riots. A troll is someone who intentionally raises tempers on a message board not someone who owns only the "other" format...

Is this true for ALL imports I think it is only true for releases in Japan....I recently saw a HD-DVD case from the UK and it matched the US release case perfectly BUT it could just be my eyes......

As for the release list it is ALWAYS person choice, but saying we have nothing to look forward to is a blanket statement and for many people its not true. I jsut wanted to show that there is more then 2 releases in the coming months that people WANT to get.... No harm meant and to each his own of course :)

Japanese HD DVDs come in standard DVD keep cases. European (U.K. and France) use standard HD DVD cases (same as U.S. cases). I would imagine Germany also uses HD DVD cases but the only German disc I have is Running Scared and it's in a digipack.

As for nothing to look forward I guess it does depend on the person. If you ask me there's plenty avaialble. The following are available from www.amazon.fr on 3/5 for ~$32 each:

Serpico
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Mulholland Drive
Terminator 2
Arizona Dream
3 Days of the Condor
The Graduate
Leaving Las Vegas

To say there are no movies for HD DVD is definitely stretching it. Import movies at ~$32 (includes 1-5 day shipping) are really a pretty good deal. It certainly provides for a wider range of titles... :D

Ah, that is nice to know about the cases. How does the PAL conversion on HD-DVD work though? The reason I ask is because my DVD player is region free, but for some reason, it won't play a PAL disc.

David Susilo

region (1/2/3/4/5/6) free does not equal multi-system (PAL/SECAM/NTSC).

If I inclined to, I can author my personal disc to be Region 1 PAL (or any combination of region and system)

With HD, there is only one system for the entire world, the only restriction is the region scheme in BD.

Will definitely be picking this up.
It's so good on so many levels.
Personally, I think every movie deserves to be seen in Hi-Def.
Why shouldn't they be?

For HD-DVD thre is no need for PAL conversion :) it is NOT the same as DVD...All HD-DVD discs are the "same" from region to reigon
