View Full Version : Which BluRay titles are region free?
valmont74 07-13-07, 05:46 PM I have reported these previously, but perhaps for an update on the http://bluray.lindsite.dk/ site I gather them on one post alone.
The following FOX titles (UK/Scandinavian releases) are playable on my Samsung region A player BD P1200 with the latest fw (1.0 issued 2007-05-19) even though the box of the titles state region B.
Alien vs. Predator
Kingdom of Heaven
Phone Booth
just f.y.i :)
I have tried them to on a samsung bdp1200 region A to and they work

I'm very curious. You have listed a number of titles (de javu, Kingdom of heaven) that others are reporting as locked on region a players. Yet your samsung plays them. What is going on here?

Yes, I thought it was odd too. One post previously said Kingdom of heaven was playable. Since it was Fox I had never even thought of trying, so I tried that title and it worked. I then tried my other region B Fox titles (Alien vs. Predator and Phone Booth) and the one that did not work was X-men 3. For a second I thought it was something "wrong" with my player, but X-men 3 proves the region lock is working as it's supposed to.
(Deja Vu was released some months after the US release so I thought Buena Vista did not have any need to region code it, their other back catalogue titles such as Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 2 were region free too on all releases)
I wonder, what players (and fw if Samsung BD P1200) did the others try on Kingdom of heaven and Deja Vu if they didn't get them to work?
mijacmad 07-14-07, 02:25 PM I Just recieved US copies of Waiting ... (Unrated & Raw) And The Fifth Element (Re-Mastered) here in the UK & they both playback fine on my region B PLaystation 3.

I can confirm that KINGDOM OF HEAVEN "A" is region coded, PS3 b region UK version can't play it, or samsung B region player also can't play it...

Hello all,
Some of you might have noticed missing updates to my list, but to be honest I cannot keep up with the information anymore - other things simply have higher priority.. I hope other will continue my list, which I will keep online for now.
Thanks to all who provided me with private messages and other useful information - It's been fun.
Good luck and happy BD hunting.

SolidSwede 08-05-07, 05:58 AM Heya Hli! I have followed yourBD site for some time and I would be able to host it on a big server and keep updating it if others would continue to help as well with titles! It's so much easier to find info this way than finding it here and there on forums... I'll PM you!
Haroon Malik 08-05-07, 06:07 AM The Samsung BD-P1000 has been region hacked now. It can play BR discs of all regions and DVDs of all regions. It comes complete with a Singapore warranty.
So much for Disney making a big fuss about how important region coding is. It's a matter of time before the Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony units join the list as they are being worked on.
Region coding never worked with DVD and it won't work with Blu-Ray.

Is it hacked in the hardware or software? If, Samsung issue a new fw, it may becomed "unhacked" (or unusable if they're really evil) if it's a softwarehack.
but I agree, region coding didn't work for DVD and won't work on BD even if it may take longer before all machines are region free.
Same thing about BD+, all copy protections will be hacked in a matter of days, hours, weeks. The studios simply have to accept that and release titles (yes, Fox I am talking to you!) anyway and trust that the consumers will buy them.
Seriously, I'd rather buy a BD than download about 50 gb (if I want it uncompressed with lossless sound, extras etc), to my harddrive "gee, look at my downloaded bd collection, I can have about 5 titles on my big disk" :)

I don't know which method has been used but this will most probably be a software hack as that has been the conventional method used in the past for making DVD players region free as well.
I don't think a new firmware will lock it again. This type of thing is tested and therefore a 1 year warranty is also given.

I agree with you. The Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony units are being worked on as well to set them free. It's just a matter of time.
Maxx2029 08-05-07, 03:15 PM For anyone interested, I've combined the hli's Region code list and avforums list (plus some other sources), to form my own cheat sheet for buying Blu-Rays. The list only contains US releases, and tells do they work on Region B machine.
http://bluray.liesinc.net is the link.
The working Yes / No texts work as a link to the source material (or source will appear as tooltip).
Mister Zob 08-05-07, 06:01 PM Nice work, Maxx2029.
This is actually no news since it's either from Warner or Paramount, but THE GETAWAY, PAYBACK (DC) and REDS work fine on european PS3.

crey014 08-13-07, 08:02 PM Apparently "The Lookout" is region coded. :(
Anyone know if Infernal Affairs is region free?
Great stuff. I have put a link to this page from my dormant page!.
hli- I want to thank you for the great site you have run which helped me a lot in my purchasing decisions from overseas.
Maxx2029- Looking forward to keeping the tabs on your site (and picking up the gauntet from hli :) ) and hope you encorporate Overseas releases that work on Region A players.
Maxx2029 08-14-07, 05:51 AM hope you encorporate Overseas releases that work on Region A players. That is something I would like to do, but I'm still little hesitant over. As there are going to be so many different Region B releases of the same movie.
I mean UK, France, Germany, Nordic countries and Australia might have their own "version" of the movie out, so it would be quite a difficult to keep up which version is declared region free and does that mean others would be too...
There is a chance I'll add UK, Australia and Japan as separate lists the same way US releases are now.
(I think you just convinced me somehow.. :D I was supposed to say that the list stays as US release only when I started the reply, but now all I can say is maybe I have something up by the weekend.)
Maxx2029 08-14-07, 03:45 PM Looking forward to keeping the tabs on your site (and picking up the gauntet from hli :) ) and hope you encorporate Overseas releases that work on Region A players.Just a quick note, that now I have added little over 80 UK titles to the list. On the top of the page there are links (US Releases and UK Releases) which lead to the list. UK List is at the bottom of the page.
As a Canadian, I would like to thank you for keeping the UK release list alive and I hope that you will consider other European country releases as they come available.
If it becomes unmanageable due to multiple releases, can I suggest that you at least try to maintain a list of European releases that have not been released in North America (i.e. the upcoming U-571 [EiV UK], Seventh Seal [Tartan UK], 12 Monkeys [Concorde Germany]). It is valuable for us NA folk to know if an import will play or not, so thanks to hli and Maxx2029 for maintaining this information.
OK, back to lurking. Cheers.
Chief Brody 08-21-07, 03:08 PM I can confirm that the U.K. release of Reign Over Me is NOT region-coded and plays fine in a Region A player. Given that this movie is not out Stateside until October, if you're a fan there's no reason not to import it.
RicsterG 08-24-07, 10:12 AM I can now confirm UK/Scandinavian region B version of Phone Booth (FOX!) plays on my Samsung BD P1200 (region A) :)
I have a Samsung BD P 1000 US Region A and it gives a region warning on mine.
FFObsessed 08-26-07, 04:35 PM Does anyone know if "Immortal Beloved" is region free and will play on UK PS3?
crey014 08-27-07, 04:37 AM I was at http://bluray.liesinc.net/ and it said that Black Book Sony release is Region Free. Can anyone confirm this?
I don't want to get too excited since I've been disappointed by Volver and The Lives of Others.
@Maxx2029
Your Region Code Info page keeps getting better and better. Thanks again for all the work.
valmont74 08-31-07, 01:06 PM Wild Things (scandinavia, EU - NOT UK - UK rights are EiV) is A, B, C.
This is the theatrical cut of the film, english PCM 5.1, DD 5.1, a lot of subtitles and includes the original commentary from the DVD release.
If you want the extended edition, I guess the US is the way to go.
dvdmike007 09-03-07, 06:28 PM Replacement killers listed ABC
12 Monkeys [Concorde Germany]
I can confirm that 3 of the 10 German Concorde releases of this week are region free and run on my US PS3 (Tomb Raider 1 + 2, Underworld), so the others should be region free too.
All 10:
12 Monkeys
Alone in the Dark
Brothers Grimm
Phantom of the Opera
The Jakal
Underworld (Extended)
Tomb Raider 1
Tomb Raider 2
We were soldiers
Silent Hill

I hesitate to mention it, but the "Becoming Jane" Blu-ray from Amazon in England, plays just fine on my U.S. Playstation3.
Since this chick flick is still in (a few) U.S. theaters, you may wish to score a few points with your significant other.

Good point there ;) What subtitles and audiospecs are there?
I lent my Playstation to my son, so I can't check now.
The box says:
Main Soundtrack: English DTS HD
Subtitles: English for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired ( and possibly for Americans that can't penetrate those English accents).
Doesn't seem like much. I'll repost if the actual disc has more than this.
kiskiboy97 09-26-07, 03:12 AM Awesome news on Becoming Jane. My wife wanted to see this very badly and we ended up missing it. I just ordered her the UK Blu-Ray and picked up "The Rock" for myself. Here's hoping it works! (This is my first time importing movies). FWIW I found a picture of the back of "Jane" if anyone wants to see it.

Just a quick note, that now I have added little over 80 UK titles to the list. On the top of the page there are links (US Releases and UK Releases) which lead to the list. UK List is at the bottom of the page.

AaronSCH 09-29-07, 05:52 PM I have seen that the U.K. U-571 BD is region free but its not listed on your list?
Can anyone confrm this information? Please email me so that I can add it to the import list in the Sneak Peek Blu-ray cover thread. Thanks!
Also Cinderella Man U.K. BD doesn't seem to be on the list.
Chief Brody 10-11-07, 03:43 PM Can anyone confirm if the UK release of Fantastic Four : Silver Surfer is region coded or not? It says Region B on the case but Fox's previous day-and-date releases in the UK (Eragon and Night at the Museum) spun just fine in a Region A player so i'm curious about Fox's first international release after the hiatus. I've little interest in Silver Surfer per se but i AM interested in the Die Hard movies which are out from Fox in the UK this month before the US gets them. So i'm curious about whether it's safe to order them or not. Anyone tried Region B Silver surfer on a Region A player?
Jason Yeo 10-26-07, 12:46 PM I notice resident evil blu ray(germany ver) is out . Anyone knows if it is region free?
I have ordered HD version of the resident evil from amazon.de . However , they sent me the BD ver. Having a good look on the cover art and back, there is no indication on whether it is region free . Just wonder who can confirm if it is region free . I am going to send it back to exchange . Feel like opening it to try on my PS3 but afraid once opened , amazon.de will not accept the exchange.
Tested the resident evil germany version. Confirm it is region free .

Brett C 11-17-07, 07:05 PM Anyone know if the Australian releases of The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and Gothika are region free? Emily Rose features the B symbol on the back cover but I'm curious since the UK one is confirmed as being ABC.
wings of honneamise blu ray is this region free or region A only
I can confirm that the Tideland BD (distributed by Concorde) that I imported from Germany plays on my Region A Samsung BDP1000.
dlormans 01-15-08, 03:00 AM Hi I just finished watching my Christmas Blu-rays. All are US imports (region A) and played without issue in my Region B Sony BDP-S1E.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
20 Million Miles to Earth
Blade Runner (5 disc standard version)
The Omega Man
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Cheers
Lasersnuser 01-16-08, 10:24 AM In the post concerning the UK release of The Fountain one poster claims the following:
"BDA requires that any title with a specific region code be stripped off that code 12 months after it is released. The old copies will still be on sale but the new region-free discs will have to be indicated as such. Basically watch the Region A, B or C logo at the back of the cover."
It would be very interesting to get confirmation of this. The next question would be, how the heck does one find out if an online retailer such as, say, Amazon, carries the "new", region free version?
Mitch
Neo_Reloaded 01-16-08, 10:52 AM I'm hoping the UK release of Death Sentence on Blu-ray is region free, but I doubt it. The publisher is EiV, and I think most of their titles are region locked. There is a German release of Death Sentence coming out a month after the UK one, and that one will probably be region free at least.
dlormans 02-10-08, 03:58 PM Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd mention that the New Zealand (region B) release of "Hairspray" is region B only - won't play in my US PS3.

matrix089 03-13-08, 04:49 PM Hi everybody,
could someone tell me why at amazon.com "I am legand" from Warner is marked as region 1?
I thought all Warner BD's are rc - free?!
Thanks :)
murmur001 04-29-08, 12:00 PM I have EU PS3, region B, and ordered one copy of I am Legend from Amazon.com. It works fine. I always verify regions using http://bluray.liesinc.net site before ordering discs.
Amazon.com descriptions don't say anything about regions, its some automatic print out to say Region A. I did notice today, that No Country For Old Men movie had A region in a disc face and cover prints. Movie still play fine in EU playstation3 player, as indicated by mentioned website. So we cannot trust Amazon or disc printouts.

Click the image and you can look at the back cover for region logo's for some of the releases.
Can anyone confirm the ECHO BRIDGE budget titles being region free?
Also for those importing from Australia or with Region A players - are the UK listed region free titles assumed to be the supply for Oz as well - playable on Region A players?
Thanks
visualmagic 06-07-08, 06:59 AM Hi there,
My name is Alex and I thought I would make life easier for everyone with a region free site that sends out an update every week on whats new etc.
This looks like an awesome forum by the way, and I hope this information is a worthwhile contribution.
The Aussie and NZ page is at:-
blu-raymoviescheap dot com
and the Euro relevant page with info on things like VAT etc. is at:-
blu-raymoviescheap dot co.uk
Once registered you get access to the full listing and weekly mailouts of new developments.
Cheers
Alex

Interesting. Warner never enforced Region Coding on Hollywood titles except Rambo in Germany. Is Blood Diamond released by Warner in your country ?
micnic77 08-27-08, 02:23 AM Warner never enforced Region Coding on Hollywood titles except Rambo in Germany?
All "pure" Warner titles are region free. Rambo is only distibuted by Warner in Germany just like the New Line titles which are also region coded (AFAIK) even though the Warner logos are all over them.

Those lists aren't very complete. They don't list Oldboy or Welcome to Dongmakgol. It shows some that are not region free, but not all that are region locked. It looks like those are only lists of US discs, but not discs from other countries. A complete list would be more helpful. As it is, its somewhat useless to those of us who wish to import INTO the US *sigh*. More mail for my SPAM folder.

Just grabbed the cover and it looks like Warner Bros. are the distributor here in New Zealand/Australia.
However, I have to admit, I'm now a bit confused. I'm sure I saw some kind of logo that indicated Region A, B & C supported, however now I can't see it at all!?
syncguy 08-31-08, 12:00 AM According to the Australian DTV forum, Reg B Blood Diamond is region free and Rambo is locked.
BuGsArEtAsTy 10-06-08, 09:26 PM Is anyone still maintaining a global list of region free Blu-ray titles? The links at the beginning are dead.

Hello all,
Search give me this very old threat, and maybe this is not the best one, but here is goes ...
I'm a newbie for watching Blu-ray's in PC, I'm using Windows 7 64bit.
I want to check and confirm region coding on my discs.
I picked one from here which is also in my collection:
http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b
Day The Earth Stood Still (2008) it's confirmed to be B/C
Well, PowerDVD9 info shows only region B which is the one I selected.
A friend told that AnyDVD will show this info.
AnyDVD's info shows: Can't determine region code!
So, finally the actual question.
In what program I can verify region coding on BD's?
Looking for info on a Crossing Over Blu-Ray release. Expecting nothing in the US, and the British release appears region locked. Any info on the German release from December?

Somebody, please!
Or is it really that difficult to verify regions in Blu-ray.
Cinema Squid 02-08-10, 11:16 AM Somebody, please!

You can try this technique with AnyDVD HD which takes advantage of its region code removal routines:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=17539879&postcount=750
I use this method to check region codes using PowerDVD 8 on Vista x64 which involves creating region A/B/C presets and then switching between them:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=16737016&postcount=51
Forum member msgohan has written a utility to automate the swapping of the PowerDVD region presets that you can also try:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1027837
You can try ...
Thanks for these.
I'll check them out.
I assumed that region check is much easier in Blu-ray, but how wrong I was.
ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theatre 3 seems to work quite well to me.
TMT3 along with Blu-ray Region Tray Tool (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17014419) is quite fast and easy way to verify discs regions.
Cinema Squid, thanks for leading my way to correct direction.
