View Full Version : Which BluRay titles are region free?
Hallo,
I am from Germany and just bought the european version of the Samsung BD-P1000 player. Now I heard there are some US BD titles that are region free. Can someone list these titles, e.g. are the Lionsgate titles (Stargate, T2) region free?
THANKS!
Fr123
@Fr123
Hallo!
Fr, AFAIK no one has found a title that hasn't worked on an EU player so they're all region free it seems. There may be some titles that aren't, it's just no one has found it
@ALMA
Ja, ich hab den Player bei einem deutschen Versandhändler gekauft (EP Netshop). Im Lieferumfang sind SWAT und eine Jazz Sampler BD :-)
Ein Review gibts, sobald ich den Player ausgiebig getestet habe.
For all english readers: I got a Samsung BD player from a german webshop. As soon as I can test the unit I will write a short review here.

Some region-coded titles have already been released
"Click" and "The Great Raid" Region "A" Blu-Ray discs will still not play in my Region "B" player. Warners "Corpse Bride" will play (it does not have any region code).

Agree, here is my input so far:
Region Free:

Warner: "Corpse Bride"
NOT Region Free:
*************
Sony: "Click"
Disney: "Great Raid"
kat3975 11-05-06, 12:17 AM Well I've been ordering from Amazon for a little while trying to get up some titles before the players are released here in Aus. I got my new Samsung DS-P1000 yesterday and tested all my titles....all good.
this is what i've got to work on my B region player....
The Fifth Element
House of Flying Daggers
Lethal Weapon
SWAT
Terminator
Terminator 2
Ultraviolet
If anyone else finds more, please let us know, because titles via Amazon are almost half the prince that they are from local stores!!!!
The folowing USA discs played fine on my UK Samsung player
Blazing Saddles
Corpse Bride
House of Wax
But these would not
Eight Below
Brothers Grimm
Paul.
Since we non-us High Def freaks are having a hard time getting software that will work in our player I will try to maintain this page from input from you guys.

Thanks. My german is a little rusty, but I'm sure the poster is referring to the UK version of Underworld. Lets hope our german friends can get back here and give us an update.
I hope some of those readers will come back :) to give as a little translation.

Yes, the UK Underworld BluRay is region free, but I am sure that most of the Sony US cataloge titles are without region coding.

thanx Fr123, so we have to find out which are those titles.

Hi all,
Just added Warners "Unforgiven". This only confirms that so far all Warner titles (catalog titles) are without region.
PLEASE US readers with blu-ray titles - help us here and list titles with no region code on the back of the disc box - PLEASE !!! ;)
See http://bluray.lindsite.dk
All! Warner BD´s are regionfree!

Dave Mack 11-06-06, 07:00 AM Anyone owning a US Sammy player that has NOT been upgraded to the new firmware basically has a region free BD player. If you do the firmware upgrade, it changes the player to no longer being Region-free. Sneaky of Sammy to slip it in that way...

Has this been confirmed through Sammy or member testing? I've seen your comments before on this topic, but wondering if it's been tested by anyone first hand? Please don't think I am challenging you..just wanting a information confirmation.
Please, this is an English forum. Posting in a foreign language is just going to get them deleted.
anybody tested
BLACK HAWK DOWN and XMEN3 if they are region free ?
BHD is probably free as catalogoue title, xmen3 hmm

rboster 11-09-06, 02:25 PM I purchased a copy of Emily Rose from UK. I have updated my samsung with the latest firmware...so I'll report back if the title is region free on the new firmware. I have not seen a confirmation about the new firmware taking away the region free status. I've heard people mention they thought that was the case...but no one confirming first person, nor showing an industry link stating so.
Ron
Hi all, just updated my list.
Still no news about paramount titles e.g.: MI3 which does not have region mark on the back of the cover. Any volenteers in region B ;)

Thanks Ron. Sadly it is also not clear if any of the current UK titles are region coded. It seems that many are labelled as A but in fact are not - the same seems to be true for Region B.

Phloyd, correct - it's a real mess, the only way we can find out is to find an entusiast who owns both a region A and B player, buys all BD titles and read/post in this forum all together.
rboster 11-09-06, 06:11 PM It states on Amazon UK's website in the specs: All Region So, one can feel like there is a decent chance it will playback in both the US and state side players. There was a AVS member that bought Hostel and it played in his US player....can't say, which player it was or if it had the latest firmware. I'm a little put off when members repost heresay statements like the samsung firmware changes without regard to providing links to company spokespeople or firsthand accounts. My copy should arrive next week sometime
UK version of The Exorcism of Emily Rose is region free. The Blu-ray case is marked region B but it plays fine in my USA region A Samsung.
rboster 11-09-06, 08:58 PM PDB-have you updated your samsung with the latest firmware? I assume since it's region free, even if Samsung did change to encoded region..it wouldn't matter in the case of this title.
Thanks for your post....looking forward to this title. How is the PQ?
Yep, I have the most current firmware. I just got the disc in the mail but the first few minutes looked pretty good.
anybody tried some new releases on european BD players ?
like
Kingdom of Heaven
Black Hawk Down
X-MEN 3
thanx in advance,

OK, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the UK Emily Rose to play on my US Sammy. How does the PAL video play on an NTSC TV. I know for my region-free DVD's I needed a special player, but how does this work with BD and the Sammy. Is the pitch difference still there as well?
dvdcinehome 11-12-06, 12:33 PM Guys, did you try " Gone in 60 seconds " , is this title without region?
Everybody .. great I'll update the list as soon as I get the time..

I was hoping that at least SONY Black Hawk Down will be free hmm........... :( :(

Cine4Home 12-03-06, 09:16 AM Hi there,
Looking at this list, it is kinda obvious:
- All Fox titles are region coded
- All Disney titles are region coded
- Warner titles do not have region codes
- With Sony titles it depends on the actuality
Somebody statetd already that european FOX titles are region coded too and do not work on US - Code A players.

No, in some other thread somebody tried European Fox titles on his US-Samsung and after the firmware update, these titles did not work anymore. Before the update, they worked. This kinda makes sense since obviously Fox titles are the only ones with real region coding together with Disney titles.

Hi, (Great list BTW, pity it's down ATM),
I have some paramount disks I bought whilst in the US last week, they have no region that I can see on the back, but as I haven't bought a player yet don't know if they work in Region B (Australia).

Hello all,
Sorry about the downtime, but a major virus attack ruined all my servers and PCs (really !). most exe files were infected and since I was in the middle of closing an important deal - let me put it this way - I'm now 10 years older
I'll try to keep up with the postings asap..
Site should be up now.

alfbinet 12-13-06, 02:36 AM BD is restricted by region? When did that happen?
Anyone knows if World Trade Center has Region marking on the cover ?
BD is restricted by region? When did that happen?
It started from the beginning, but only used so far by Sony, FOX and Disney
I see that Fox has released titles in the UK now.
If any title is likely to be truly region locked it will be a Fox title ;)
If anyone gets a chance to check a Region B title on a US player (especially a Panasonic ;) ) it would be great to hear the results (and post to http://bluray.lindsite.dk/ tracker of course).
I see that there is some talk of them not workijg, please post references here if that is the case.
Cheers!
BenjaminG 12-20-06, 05:55 AM I got 3 region B titles from Fox - Kiss of the Dragon, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Transporter and none of them worked on our region A Sony BDPS1. So looks like all Fox titles will be region coded :-(
Thanks for this list. :)
I will definitely be ordering Underworld extended edition on BD from the U.K. in February if its not announced here yet.
I will probably also order The Crow and Donnie Brasco in February.
Now all we need is a P/Q rating ;)
Hello,
List updated (Region B).
Merry Christmas to all.
sneals2000 12-21-06, 07:50 AM For those in the US interested in European BD releases it seems that movie releases in Europe are being encoded 1080/24p - using an identical format to US 1080/24p releases - so there aren't 50Hz / 60Hz issues to worry about (as was the situation with DVD and other SD formats)
This is because all European displays with "HD Ready" certification can cope with both 50Hz and 60Hz 720p and 1080i inputs as a minimum - so 24p with 3:2 field or frame pull-down is supported in Europe. This does, of course, mean that we don't get the 4% speed-up we used to have with 24p treated as 25p - but it also means we lose our smoother 2:2 pulldown and are having to get used to 3:2 cadence judder.
Where care may need to be taken is when European TV series start appearing on HD optical formats (I'd expect series like the BBC's Planet Earth, Torchwood etc. to be candidates for UK HD releases) - as these are likely to be released in 1080/50i in Europe - which would require 50Hz compatibility on displays (and players).
Hello,
List updated (Region B).
Merry Christmas to all.
thanx ! :)

but thanks to some enterprising fans, now there's a web resource that helps make sense of this increasingly tangled web. First pointed out to us by High-Def Digest Forums member zombieflanders, the site (accessible directly at http://bluray.lindsite.dk) tracks which US and European Blu-ray titles are region-coded, which are region-blocked, and which are region-free.

jackson0815 12-31-06, 08:17 AM I bought it from amazon because a swiss DVD-Shop had listed it as "codefree". That was before I knew that every other european Fox-release was not codefree. I would like to test it for myself on my US-PS3, but I can`t open it unless I wanna send it back. So I know the chances are less than zero, but I would like to have that confirmed before I return it to amazon.
Happy new year everyone.

you are right, but I want to see it myself :)

I orderer few reiong A movies to play them on SONY region A player in one sony shop here,.... funny story, they received that player for viewing and showing blu-ray movies on new sony bravia LCDs :) but hey, no movies, not even region1 dvds ;) so they could not play any movie (somehow they found about me :))
so first I took few R1 dvds, and later few movies I had from amazon, yup region A because I will probably own regionA player...
that's why I ended up with some regionA movies and some region free movies..., if I will have reionB player, they will gladly buy my regionA movies :)

Mothergoose 01-16-07, 03:26 PM Hi I am new here, and because I am/was following this forum/topic everyday.
I thought let's register................ mainly to ask the following question.
I know it's a Fox title, so the answer is probably disapointing but:
Can anyone tell if "The devil wears prada" is region locked?
Here in europe this title is not even announced on Blu-ray and is expected on DVD end of March. But off course I would prefer the BR :D
samjohnson 01-18-07, 03:24 PM Any word on if Crank, Employee of the Month and The Covenant are region free?
I can confirm that INTO THE BLUE, uk version region B is playing on Sony us version region A player....

it's still quite cheaper to shop on amazon.com so far, cheaper prices + 10% discount... so please let it LIVE a little bit longer :)
thanx

Guys,
This list is very important to me. There are many Region B titles coming out which are exclusive HD DVD titles in the US. I really appreciate the work you have done, and will need it greatly as these titles are released. I am maintaining an Import Guide (see sig) and will need the data you provide so that when these titles come to Blu-ray in Europe (like Brokeback Mountain, Spy Game, and U-571) I can list these titles are either playable or not in Region A players.
If, however, you feel you are spending too much time updating your site, I will gladly maintain the list, with input from yourselves, of course.

Wow! Great site! I can't stand region encoding and have a few Region 2 DVDs in my collection that I play with an HTPC. The PS3 (USA) won't play PAL discs for some reason (it obviously has the horsepower to). I'm looking forward to when Blu-ray releases really start coming out and we start to see some more "older" films being released! Thanks for your work!
joshd2012 01-31-07, 12:17 PM Wow! Great site!
Thanks. I was inspired when I heard about how The Exorcism of Emily Rose would work in Region A players (on this forum), and then realized how much other exclusive Region B stuff was coming soon. I then dug into the Japanese releases, to find even more gems. I just figured, if I hadn't heard about all this stuff, then others are probably in the same boat, and I should put a resource together for people to find the info easily (instead of having to surf Japanese sites and translate them via Google and figure out what everything says - like I did). I hope you find it useful and thanks for the compliments. I also hope that hli realizes his work is not in vain, and that it is being put to good use.

It's a great asset, and I personally don't feel it's obsolete until players can be made region free.
So, keep up the good work!
:)
supermackem 01-31-07, 01:50 PM Can confirm region b black hawk down is multi region. Plays fine on my region a ps3.
Stephan 01-31-07, 02:09 PM Fox and Disney titles are region coded. Warner and Paramount titles are not, they don't like region coding.
Liongate titles will probably be locked once they figure out what this region coding thing is about. :p
Sony catalogue titles are usually region free, even though they print a region code on the case. New releases that are day and date with DVD are region coded.
so now we have two GREAT sites :)
Blu-ray region free GUIDE :)

Disney's back catalogue titles are now region free. Pearl Harbor, Chicago and Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy all have the A, B and C region code symbols on the back cover. So it looks like only their brand new films will be region coded and older films will be region free. :)
Columbia are doing the same as well, but Fox are region coding everything both in the USA and UK.

samjohnson 02-02-07, 04:40 PM I noticed that Crank is released in the UK by Universal Pictures (as opposed to Lionsgate like The Descent). Perhaps that is why the US Lionsgate BD is region coded?

Could very well be. Or Lionsgate has decided to take the route some other studios follow, i.e. region code new movies, and leave catalog titles regionless.

Definitely a problem with Samsung, as Region B Panny BD10 plays The Descent fine.
dvdmike007 02-05-07, 06:43 AM Its a shame about Crank as we will not get that at all in HD in the UK
Potetgullmannen 02-05-07, 02:16 PM Anyone tried The Covenant?
I will have Covenant, region A, in a few days (ordered it 2 days ago) and hopefully it'll work on my Panny Region B player. I'll post the result here.

It's pretty expensive importing titles from Europe with our exchange rate. One BD disk costs about the same as two DVDs purchased locally.
What is the difference between the Japanese PS3 and American one in terms of region coding? Games and BD from US both play?
What is the difference between the Japanese PS3 and American one in terms of region coding? Games and BD from US both play?
For Blu-ray playback, none whatsoever, as both Japan and the US are region A countries. Native PS3 games do not have region coding.
The difference lies in DVD and PS1/PS2 playback, where the PS3 will pick the existing rules of these formats. For instance, a Japanese PS3 will only play R2 NTSC DVDs and Japanese videogames.

This Region A title is fully playable on my Panasonic DMP BD 10 Blu-ray region B player/European model. So add it to the list! :)
My firmware on this Panasonic is the latest one (v.1.4).
The picture quality seems very good- but I just flipped through a few scenes to check if it was working. Will see the whole movie tonight.
The following region "A" titles.
Kung Fu Hustle, Beefest, Memento and The Wicker Man (2006), I can confirm are all region free and will play on any player.
samjohnson 02-10-07, 06:02 PM Thanks! I put the Convenant on order :)
Potetgullmannen 02-10-07, 07:27 PM I just watched Covenant from start to finnish tonight. Nice quality, both sound and picture.
But now I'm a bit confused. Isn't this a rather new movie? I think I read somewhere that it was so that Sony's old catalog titles though marked as region A worked on all players. But new movies did not? They were actually locked to Region A. Or isn't Covenant new? region A Monster House for example does not work on other regions according to the unofficial list. I thought both Covenant and MOnster House were out in the cinemas in the USA last autumn? If that is correct, then why the difference?
The Sony policy is really strange - stating region code A, but not actually using it - Sony and Lionsgate are the drivers of my list - anyways list updated...

Mothergoose 02-13-07, 09:36 AM Can anyone confirm that "The Departed" is region free.
I think it is, because it's warner and they quoted somewhere that because HD-DVD is region free they will not use the region lock on Blu-ray. :)
But before I order I want to know for sure. :D

Hello all,
This weekend I went into one of the first danish local stores which has started to carry Blu-ray and HD DVD. If this initial pricing (approx. 50% higher than DVD) is not going down fast, I see great trouble ahead for these two formats. This also makes it clear that we must continue the list - List updated !

NINE INCH NAILS LIVE: BESIDE YOU IN TIME
http://halo22.nin.com/hdfaq.html#q17
I'm purchasing Beside You In Time in Europe or another region of the world. What is available and what do I need to know?
The international release date for Beside You In Time is 26 February. Only the standard DVD is being released outside of the US. If you want the HD DVD or Blu-ray versions, you will need to import them. The standard DVD is being released in NTSC video format only - if you live in Europe or another region which uses the PAL video standard, please check your hardware to ensure NTSC playback compatibility. Most DVD players released in the last few years support both PAL and NTSC playback.
There is no region encoding on any version of Beside You In Time, so importing will not be a problem.

To my regret, "The Descent" doesn't work on my Panasonic Player. The menu starts with audio but without video. I couldn't start the movie. After stopping the disc the player doesn't respond to any activity. Have to turn of the power. :(
private Angus 03-02-07, 04:49 PM ...what's weird is that saw 3 is marked region one, with a button combination you can set your european samsung to region one, but it still doesn'T work....
Potetgullmannen 03-03-07, 06:34 PM THANX for info !! I was considering this one :)
from review on http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/verticallimit.html, there is a mention of problem with consistency, but overall the image is very good, I can't wait to test it myself :)
let us know what do you think after you will check whole movie...
Marek
hmmm, Marek, I really don't know... I kinda liked the movie - I haven't seen it before. But this BD version.... Not very impressing. I saw the whole movie this saturday evening, and while I liked the movie and the plot, the picture quality were all over the place.
It's a tier 2 movie, according the list on this forum. But really, I think it's a tier 3 and dropping down to tier 4 sometimes. I could be the master for all I know. And frankly, I really don't care. I liked it as a movie overall. Though - It's soft, some grain sometimes - though the overall soft look is more disturbing than the grain. The close ups are sharp - but ordinary dvd's do that as well.
In the beginning the camera is panning over this desert, mountain kinda landscape - and it seems so out of focus that I had to check my projector and my panny BD player that they were set up correctly. Lack of details in the mountains and the backgrounds. My Lord Of The Rings sd dvd's look better than this when panning over the mountains..
Still - for those who haven't seen it before, I think it's a keeper. :)
Thanx for info Potetgullmannen :)
maybe I will reconsider if I need it badly :)
thanx again,
Marek

Does anybody know if the magnolia titles(war within, district B13, worlds fastest indian) are region free?
JBlacklow 03-06-07, 10:12 AM March 26th might see the first Entertainment in Video releases, so it will be interesting to see if they have regional coding as well.Anyone got contact info for EIV? They've got a couple Uni titles that I'd love to import, as long as they'll play in Region A.

Hi Hli,
Is your site down at the moment? I haven't been able to connect for the last 2 days and I wanted to check some disks before I ordered from Amazon.
Thanks,
M.

Nope. You might be stuck behind a firewall (I am at work). You need to use a proxy like: http://www.hidemyass.com in order to get through it.

Thanks Mate!,
You were right, the port 81 used on lindsite was messing me about; it is all working for me now.

joshd2012 03-07-07, 07:51 PM Is the UK release of Kung Fu Hustle out? Sony's website says 11/13/06 but Amazon UK says 03/13/07. If so, is it unedited and region free (I assume it will be since everyone else has it so). Any UKers know?
animezine 03-07-07, 08:30 PM I just received the Korean Blu-ray version of Kung Fu Hustle. The specs match the Japanese version, but the coverart is the same as the US. All the extras (including the commentary) have English subs. It's definitely the uncut version. I got it from Yesasia with a $5 coupon; total was $23 shipped.

I know the Asian versions of the BD are all uncut, but I would like to have English menus if at all possible.
animezine 03-07-07, 10:02 PM Yep, everything is in English (menus, options, cover, etc.). In fact, aside from the extra Japanese 5.1 dub on it, I'm not sure why Sony didn't just use this version for the US as well. It's uncut and the A/V quality is excellent.

Awesome! Does it have the Chinese PCM track as well? I'll definitely purchase this if it does.
animezine 03-08-07, 08:52 AM Yep, it's got the Cantonese Chinese 5.1 PCM track, the 5.1 English dub, & the 5.1 Japanese dub. The extras match what is on the US version (the Chinese commentary track does have English subtitles). It wouldn't suprise me if the menu is also the same as the US version. Definitely recommended if you want a cheaper version of the uncut movie on Blu-ray (versus getting the UK version).
