Triton,
The fact that you did not get an A1 remote is not a big loss, in fact you may have been saved much frustration. The previous owner probably threw it out the window like I wanted to so many times before getting a universal remote.
I don't know if the RS remote will work with the A1. You could use some of the Toshiba DVD player codes and see if they work.
I know the Logitech Harmony remotes work great with the A1.

The only issue that I see is that you need the setup button on the A1 remote.
I use the Harmony 880 and it works wonders - although I doubt you want to spend the money for an 880. But it really is a great remote.
I know you can buy an ACTUAL replacement through toshiba though - but as stated - the Toshiba remote is pretty bad.

Triton,
Some Harmony remotes get programmed via the web. Any of the ones that do should be able to drive the HD-A1 just fine. You should go to Logitech's site to be sure. Like JWLou, I have the 880.
Lou, you are being too kind. If you threw the HD-A1 remote out the window, you would hear a loud sucking sound for a week. ;-)

I have bought several remotes and none work. RCA says that their remote will work, but none do. I have bought every cheat universal remote I could find. Im starting to think I will also have to buy a smart remote and pray that it works. Can anyone PLEASE tell me if you have a lowend smart remote that works for the HD-A1? I also bought my unit at a discount because it was open box. (150 bucks, not bad eh?)
I heard a rumor that Sony makes a smart remote that is around 30 dollars. That is in my price range, but I dont want to waste anymore time and money on what up the this point has been a complete waste of time. BTW a replacement remote from Toshiba is $70.00. Also the remote codes for the HD-A1, is still unknown. Ive went to RCA, and radio shack. Neither have a working remote.

If you want the original, I think you can get it from Toshiba for about $60. But you will probably be happier going with the least expensive Logitech that has the HD-A1 codes online. I would have been in the same boat (for my second unit), but the "very astute" salesperson at an electronics store whose name I will not mention went ahead and gave me the remote for the demo A2 (he didn't know what it was for).
The A2 remote works perfectly with the A1. I think they all share the same codes. So you might want to order a replacement for the RCA gen 1 (I think it is the same as remote for the A2) or see if you can purchase an A2 remote (better than the A1). Or get a backlit one from the X series.

Had exactly the same problem with the same cause (cheap HD-A1 that came with no remote).
I bought a Logitech Harmony 525 and it works extremely well.
You will also be able to access the setup with it.
I bought a One-for-all universal remote along with the HD-A1 but none of the codes did work (same goes for a Philips universal remote).
I then sent an email to OFA and asked them for the code.
They responded several days later when I already had the Harmony.
According to OFA the code to use with the HD-A1 is 1769 and it has to be a new model. The one I had was apparently too old a model.
So if you can get the harmony cheap I would go for it, because you will also be able to operate other devices with it.

I hear allot of great things about the Harmony. I hear you can find some that are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, "reasonably" is relative to the persons budget. I dont have allot of money right now to spend on toys. I did however spend 12,000 brownie buttons with my wife, when I bought a HD DVD player that at this time, does not work.
What is the cheapest confirmed remote that will work for this thing? Besides Harmony. I dont have +80 dollars to spend right now. I know you have to pay to play, but if there is an alternative, Im willing to go that route. Right now I just cant afford a Harmony.
