View Full Version : What was your first movie owned ONLY on HD-DVD?

For me, I wanted it to be V for Vendetta, but I was unable to wait. At the time it was released on DVD, there wasn't a confirmed release date for HD-DVD.

Well, now comes MI-3 which was released HD-DVD at the same time as DVD, so this is the first movie for me where the first time I am seeing it (and owning it) is on HD-DVD.

Just wanted to know if others have been able to show better self-control. :D

Chris.

The first movie I got on HD DVD that I never owned on any previous format was The Last Samurai. I imagine this is the same for many of the early adopters. ;)

I bought a few HD-DVD that I haven't owned on SD.
The last samurai, Perfect Strom, Serenity, apollo 13 were all movies I have in HD that I never picked up in SD.
Toyko Drift F&F 3, and MI 3 will be the 1st movies I will be buying for HD-DVD that I haven't seen in the theater or on SD-DVD.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is the only one so far. If freaking BestPrices ever gets around to shipping the pre-ordered box set, my second HD-DVD-only title will be Mission: Impossible III.

Word!! Though to be honest I actually purchased BOTH Swordfish and Blazing Saddles as my first 2 HD DVDs. However, most HD DVDs I've been purchasing I don't own on DVD. So far, the only HD DVDs I purchased that I did own on DVD were: Willy Wonka and Sleepy Hollow.

1st HD dvd I bought was Swordfish!

The first three HD DVDs I bought are the also first three I don't have on DVD:

Corpse Bride <--- It was very hard to hold off buying the DVD.
Unforgiven
Pitch Black

#4 will be King Kong (with the HD DVD drive), and #5 will be The Thing.

I'm not keen on purchasing most of my DVDs on HD DVD again. OTOH, I wish combo discs were cheaper, because I'd preferentially buy those (if all the usual extras were still there). I like the fact I can rip DVDs to my iPod. So far we can't do this with HD DVD.

I did not get my A-1 until August, 2006. My first 2 titles that I purchased were:

Believe it or not . . . I have just celebrated my 60th HD-DVD this week.

I own four movies on HD DVD.

Two of them I own on DVD ("Batman Begins" and "Serenity"). Two of them I own solely on HD DVD Combos ("The Break-Up" and "Slither").

I also have "V For Vendetta" and the Mission Impossible set on pre-order (that should hopefully ship this week). "V For Vendetta" is a title I held off on purchasing due to wanting to wait until I could get it in Hi-Def (at the time, I was expecting Blu-Ray.... my how things change).

I own MI:2 on DVD (saw it in the theater as well), but the first and third movies are new purchases.

Value Electronics is shipping "Sahara" and "Aeon Flux" with my HD-A2, both of which I do not own on DVD.

I also intend to order "Forbidden Planet", "You, Me, And Dupree", "Superman II: The Donner Cut", "Superman Returns", and "Smallville: Season Five" at the end of the month... all of which I do not own on DVD (though I own the theatrical version of Superman II).

"Poseidon" will also be a purchase in December, and "The Pulse" in January. If I can find "Pitch Black" at my local Target, I'll probably pick it up...

This was true for me as well, at least with the DVD version. I've been watching the TV series on UHD for the first time too, man it is one great TV show. It's ashame that it didn't last that long. Did I miss it or, did UHD not air a episode this week?

The first movie purchased on HD-DVD that I didn't already own (or saw before either) was Slither. Before buying Slither, I watched KKBB for the first time on HD-DVD via Netflix, but didn't order it.

Since buying Slither, I've added/ordered V4V and MI:3 boxset. I'm looking forward to growing this list (Waterworld, Superman Returns, Superman II, Clerks II, etc.). New titles are where I really want to spend my money. Of course, the Matrix and LOTR sets would be real nice too. ;)

For me, the first HD-DVD I bought, that I did not own previously on SD-DVD, was Superman Returns... although you could say I bought the SD-DVD at the same time, since it is a combo disc. Not to mention I bought the Superman Ultimate Collection on SD-DVD that same day, which means I bought Superman Returns three times in a single purchase.... Wow, that kinda sucks now that I think about it.

The runner up is Unforgiven, which had a HUGE discount, since Tower Records was a week from closing for good, and I got the last copy!

Technically it should be a tie between Superman II Donner Cut and SUperman Returns, but since I had the SD DVD box set and sold it the next week to finance the HD versions, the first true movie I've never owned at all until HD-DVD was Miami Vice. All the others I have except for day and date stuff I've replaced the SD.

First HD-DVD owned by was Training Day. I started buying movies like 4 months defore the 360 Addon came to market. I was planning on buying a standalone player, well I did. I got the RCA @ Walmart on clearance. Sold it, because of the slow startup and bugs with VanHelsing. Glad I did. The 360 is becoming a Entertainment maddog. I haven't played a game in forever. Straight HD-DVD use. I'm sure this will change when HALO 3 is released.

Slither, because I wanted to see the movie but didn't want to blow $20 on the regular DVD knowing that my mind was already made to go HD-DVD.

Bought seven more HD-DVD's (Batman Begins, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lady in the Water, Fearless, Good Night, and Good Luck and Superman Returns) and an HD-DVD add-on for my XBox 360 (w/ King Kong packed-in) but haven't hooked them up because I haven't bought an HDTV yet. Ironically, despite my antipathy toward them because of cost, the HD-DVD combos have allowed me to enjoy my purchases by letting me watch the SD version of these movies while I get closer to pulling the trigger on what will be my first ever HDTV. :D

The exception is Grand Prix which I only have for HD DVD that I didn't have for DVD. But its not 1st time seen for me since I am old enuf to have seen it at the Theater when it was originally release and have seen it a few time on late TV (real bad pan and scan) thru the years.

Ditto on Serenity. It was one of the two titles I chose when I ordered my HD-A2 from VE. The other one was Batman Begins, but I already had it on DVD.

BTW, my first Blu-Ray was Black Hawk Down.

The Adventures of Robin Hood. I love how new movies look on HD, but the classics are great as well! We need more! Captain Blood, anyone?

My first unique forays were Blazing Saddles and Corpse Bride when I got my 360 add-on. Subsequently added Happy Gilmore, Apollo 13, Lethal Weapon, Superman Returns, and Heavenly Music From Space as my "originals". I'm almost embarrassed to say how many double-dips I've done... but there was no way that I was going to miss Batman Begins or Serenity in HD.

Everything was at least a 'double dip' from launch until a few weeks ago :o, then I "discovered" the '$20 off $50' deal via Google checkout :D. My 'first wave' of only on HD DVD purchases:

-Dirty Dozen
-U571
-Chicago and EWF Live
-Out of Sight
-Fearless
-The Thing
-MI-3
-Pitch Black

Riddick was the 1st HD-DVD I watched, and it still has the most impressive picture I have seen on HD-DVD.

King Kong - as it came with the add-on.

But I bought Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, Sahara, Apollo 13 and U571 at the same time as well.

Cheers!

King Kong (add-on), then Fearless.

KK is still my show-off disc, although I'd rather pop in Goodfellas, Casino, or Casablanca when I'm not trying to enlighten J6P.

Serenity was my first HD DVD only purchase (Apollo 13 the first).

Most of my purchases I already have on DVD. It's hard for this not to be the case since I own about 1,000 of them.

In fact 85% of my HD DVDs purchases were already owned on DVD.
