Much better than WMP10. chap 10-31-06, 06:01 AM I actually think wmp11 is a step backwards. ITs a bit to resource hungry, and on one of my older P4 2ghz machines it takes a while to start up. Its a good player, but its a bit too bloated and tries to do too much. Then again I guess it depends on what your using it for. For me it really just doesn't cut it, but for 360 streaming I'm all in. KLUNKDM 10-31-06, 07:18 AM I love 11. Been using it for awhile.......I think they have improved it very much......My one biggest complaint would be that it is a resource hog (But that is a way to sell new hardware). There are services that lets it connect to network devices, but if you don't have anything, then you can turn some of them off. I really like the interface......... reaper 10-31-06, 07:38 AM Question for you guys. If I have WMP 11, do I still need media center connect to stream audio to the 360 for in game custom soundtracks? This might be a solution to my current problem. For some reason, windows media connect won't work anymore on my home PC. So, I haven't been able to stream anything in quite some time. Pissing me off and I never have time to call MS to get some support. chap 10-31-06, 07:39 AM Slight warning before you update to wm11. Fairuse4wm doesn't work on windows media 11 yet. So if you planned on playing videos that are drm on your 360 you are kind of screwed if you install this. chap 10-31-06, 07:41 AM It has an updated windows media connect built in. So it will automatically share music and videos and probably pictures in your my videos my music and my pictures folder and let your 360 connect to it. It works really well so far. reaper 10-31-06, 08:01 AM Freaking awesome. Must try. Wish I was home. aaronwt 10-31-06, 08:38 AM I actually think wmp11 is a step backwards. Then again I guess it depends on what your using it for. For me it really just doesn't cut it, but for 360 streaming I'm all in. It works fine on my 1.5Ghz Celeron laptop. chap 10-31-06, 08:42 AM Not saying it doesn't work. I'm saying its a lot slower on my older system then wmp10 was. kevin g. 10-31-06, 01:07 PM Just to reinforce what I'm hearing...Do I still need MCE to utilize? Or will I just need MP11 and MC? I stream audio over Media Player 10 and would love to tap into a specific Sunday morning radio show through my 360 and into my stereo via Optical.... Thanks chap 10-31-06, 01:34 PM You don't neede MCE or MC. You just need MP11. jagouar 10-31-06, 02:34 PM actually on a fast computer wmp11 is far faster than anything else i have ever used (you really notice it when browsing a large music collection). Itunes6/7 and earlier version of wmp are just plain slow compared to wmp11. I REALLY like the new wmp. And the way it uses coverart for every view is very nice as well.... really makes even itunes7 look antiquated in comparison. SonnyC79 10-31-06, 02:45 PM So am I to understand it that you no longer need a “Windows Media Center PC” to stream videos to your Xbox 360 (via the Media Player 11 or this “Windows Media Connect”)? If that is the case, if I am running Xbox live via an Ethernet cable, is that all that I need to connect my PC to the 360? Forgive me, but I am totally new to networking… gamelover360 10-31-06, 02:54 PM I captured my video in widescreen, then I converted them from Mpeg to WMV files. Now when I stream them to the 360 they are not widescreen. Please help. Thanks. chap 10-31-06, 03:15 PM If you have a windows xp pc running wp 11, and a 360 and they are both on the network, yes thats all you need. As far as the widescreen thing goes, how did you convert it? Windows Movie Maker will screw things up and make it 4x3. Some programs do it automatically and you have to change settings to make sure it doesn't. kevin g. 10-31-06, 09:01 PM update: I went to download MP11 and MS site says it's still beta 2...Can anyone confirm? Is it the full version? Ok to download? SonnyC79 10-31-06, 09:56 PM I'm lost...I'm trying to get the Windows Media Player 11 to share with my 360, but I can't seem to figure out what I need to get/update. I do *not* have a Windows Media Center PC, but I am rather just running Windows XP...the computer is a few years old, but some people are saying that all I need is XP and the WMP 11. I cant figure out what is going on then... I installed WMP11, and I have the newest service pack, which according to www.xbox.com/pcsetup, SHOULD be able to work. After installing WMP 11, I was able to go into Media Sharing and select my Xbox 360 as a device to be connected. Then, I went to the 360 Media Center menu, went through a couple of steps, and now I am stuck at a screen that says the next step is to install the software (by going to www.xbox.com/pcsetup). It will ask me to put in a setup key that i got on the previous page, but I have NO CLUE where to put this into the Media Player settings, or wherever. If anyone else can help, I would appreciate it...thanks! Hope that helps some. If anyone else can help, I would appreciate it...thanks! well that's your problem right there. you shouldn't be in the 360 media center menu. if i'm reading you correctly, you're in the section for media center equipped pcs. once you have wmp11 up and running on the pc and media sharing is enabled, then go to the 360 and go to the media tab. on that tab go to videos. there should be two options, console and computer (i think, it's not in front of me at the moment). select computer and the 360 will try to find your pc on your network. if/when it does, you should be all set. if it doesn't find your pc then there's something either wrong with your network settings or your media sharing settings talbain 10-31-06, 10:56 PM I downloaded some HD 1080p clips but am also not able to get them to play full 16x9, they are playing in 4x3, anyone have any guesses how to fix this? i think everyone is having the same problem. don't think there's a fix yet. what i want to know is if there's any way to play this damned terminator 2 wmv hd disc on/through the 360. it's annoying as hell kevin g. 10-31-06, 11:35 PM Well I downloaded MP 11 and updated my 360 tonite...I have now lost connection with my PC. I go to all the locations that I had pictures and music, but it will not connect. I test the connections and it sees the computer... but fails the PC connection. Never had this with MC...Any and all help is appreciated. (MC is now gone with MP 11) I did allow it to share with the 360 on initial setup... And I can go in and see it is configureed to share... (I have restarted both the computer and 360 multiple times.) SonnyC79 10-31-06, 11:49 PM Okay thanks, guys...I think you were right. I was in the media center area when I shouldnt have been. Havent done any sharing yet, but i will post m progress soon enough. Thanks! RobertR1 11-01-06, 04:30 AM WMP11 + 360 update = winning combo. I'd never done any of this HTPC style streaming stuff before but wow, this rocks! I like that I can play my music out of my surround system while playing a game. The video playback and pic slide show is nice also. Can't wait to get rid of my ipod for a Zune (hopefully it's nice) and get it all sync'd up. (I have restarted both the computer and 360 multiple times.) I ran into the same problem. What you need to do is remove the computer listed in the 360. Then setup a new computer connection via the 360. In a sense you are refreshing the 360. Restarting the 360 won’t work, it is still trying to connect to your computer via the old MC settings that were established for the original PC connection. Once this is done you are ready to go :) Stangs55 11-01-06, 12:29 PM The new media connect options are worth the price of the 360 alone...even if you never game. Way to go MS :) talbain 11-01-06, 12:51 PM so, has anyone actually been able to find and play 1080p clips on the 360 via wmp11 in the correct aspect ratio? kevin g. 11-01-06, 01:29 PM I ran into the same problem. They are saved and I can play them on the computer. But 360 says no videos found on this computer. How about internet radio? Or a home movie cd playing through MP 11? Will I have access to these? On media player, goto "file, add to library" and add the folder where your media is located. Then it'll take a few mins for WMP to index all your new found media. Then go back into the 360 and you'll see it all. I had the same exact issue last night. Brainodo 11-01-06, 02:20 PM The videos also need to be in WMV format for the 360 to 'see' them. kevin g. 11-01-06, 02:50 PM On media player, goto "file, add to library" and add the folder where your media is located. I was kinda looking for something like that because they were in a Nero file. Just one thing I noticed with the new format...you don't have your standard "File Edit View Tools...etc menu. RobertR1 11-01-06, 02:55 PM You do. Goto View, Classic Menus and keep it checked. efjay 11-01-06, 02:59 PM On media player, goto "file, add to library" and add the folder where your media is located. Quick question, do you have more than 100 files and do you see them all? Read somewhere that people seem to be unable to see more than 100 files. RobertR1 11-01-06, 05:00 PM Yep, I saw my entire collection of videos (400+), music (200+) and pics(200+). WMP11 can take a while to catalog all your selection once you've added it to the library. Try reconnecting via the 360 then. boogieman 11-01-06, 06:17 PM I ran into the same problem. What you need to do is remove the computer listed in the 360. XBOX360 can't find any computers running the media share software. I don't have a firewall installed and it worked just fine until I installed WM 11 an hour an ago. Any other thoughts on how to fix this? kevin g. 11-01-06, 07:51 PM Well I see the computer and not the video. I have imported all video on my computer to MP 11, (including some I just downloaded tonight.) and no video shows up in my 360 menu. Most of my home movies were automattically added to the library when I set up MP...But something is getting lost in translation to the 360. edit: Also, with Media Connect...I could specify what files I wanted to share with the 360....I have now lost that ability. My photos are in the program for my camera. I realize I could import all of them to the file for the MP library...But that just seems to be tedious compared to what I used to be able to do. boogieman 11-02-06, 09:12 AM Didn't work for me. I've been using MC and it works just fine...I love being able to stream home movies and the WMV-HD clips. the advantage is that wmp11 has media connect built in, so you don't need to run a separate program taking up resources in the background. Toth 11-02-06, 01:20 PM Hi, I have installed and reinstalled wmp11 like 6 times now trying to get sharing to work. When I go to the sharing menu and click "share my media", and then click ok, nothing at all happens. It just freezes for 15-20 seconds(says not responding in task manager), and then unfreezes with nothing changed. Still shows the checkbox checked, and lets me re-click ok, or cancel to quit. I can't even rollback now, because somehow during one of the uninstalls(I think I turned off my pc while it was logging me out of windows for one of the restarts) it deleted that $UINSTALwmp11 or whatever directory that MS mentions in their release notes. So I don't even know how to get this thing permanently off my windows and go back to wmp10. This is extremely frustrating.... any ideas? Everything else about it seems to work fine! RobertR1 11-02-06, 03:28 PM Toth, Time to use system restore. If not, rebuild. I was streaming a movie lastnight without running WMP11 no problem... Before I installed WMP11, I had WMC and it started up everytime I turned on my computer and 'ran in the background'. Now with WMP11 I have file sharing set up and it is seeing my 360 from WMP11. Is file sharing automatically enabled without starting up WMP11? ie upon system start up? Looks like you guys are saying yes, so I guess I need to reconnect my PC from my 360? or? mmafightetnow 11-03-06, 08:20 PM Can you stream it wirelessly? Thx, B aaronwt 11-03-06, 10:37 PM No problem streaming 1080P WMV files from my laptop with a wireless connection. The laptop is wireless and the 360 is wired. But the transfer rate doesn't seem to go above 22mbs while streaming the 1080P clips. The 720P clips are under 10mbs. So either way my 54mbs 802.11g connection is more than fast enough. jocktheglide 11-03-06, 11:18 PM is there a video converter to convert my divx files to wmp files or something like that to view my videos from my computer to 360 on my tv? mmafightetnow 11-04-06, 04:02 PM TWO QUESTIONS: (1) Can you watch a movie and not just clips? I know how to watch video clips but how do you watch a dvd movie from pc stream to 360, assuming I don't want to use xbox 360 disc player save it for games:)? (2) It seems like everything had to be in "my videos"."my pictures" etc folders in order to work. If I have an external harddrive connect to pc, is there a way of pulling the data from ext hd directly to 360 without copying files to my pc "my video" folder first. thx Ph0n33z 11-04-06, 07:55 PM I installed WMP 11 on both my laptop and my pc. Things went perfectly with my laptop. It saw the xbox, xbox saw it. Could stream music, videos, etc. The problem is that my laptop is wireless, and when I was streaming video, it looked horrific. (The xbox is wired) So I decided to install it on my pc. Well, after 4 or 5 reinstalls etc. it will not share. I can click "share media" and it sees the xbox. However, the xbox does not see the pc. Then, when I try to go to check the "share media" settings, it tells me something about media sharing can not work because there are missing windows components. This happens every single time. Other than completely reinstalling windows (since I do not have a cd for that pc), do you guys have any suggestions? kneedragger 11-05-06, 10:02 AM is there a video converter to convert my divx files to wmp files or something like that to view my videos from my computer to 360 on my tv? The only program that I have found that works ok is Windows media encoder and its free. I have encoded two DVD's and streamed them wirelessly to the 360 no problem. I use media connect 2.0 because I haven't spent too much time with the version of the medai player. One movie that I encoded in the highest quality the encoder would let me took 13 hours  . Have fun. I'm waiting for the DivX/Xvid support people are saying is coming in the new update. I won't hold my breath though. klipsch 11-05-06, 05:29 PM I am unable to share with WMP 11. Everything worked great with WMC. Since I've upgraded to WMP 11 my 360 says "Can't find any computers running media sharing software. Try testing your connection." I have the 360 as "allow" under the "media sharing". Music files are enabled. I still have no luck. Anyone have any ideas? DCDeac 11-20-06, 10:49 AM I have a media server running Solaris. That's where all my mp3's are. They're shared via Samba to my XP box, and that in turn is shared to my xbox 360. I can't get any mp3's to play at all, even though they get indexed and I can see them all on the 360. Should this work or are media servers not supported? Another annoying thing - I have my entire collection of cd's in a folder layout, Media/Music/Artist/CD/track##. Some of them are well encoded, some are older, some have album art, some have no tags. Some older stuff ripped prior to the cd database intergration are just track1, track2, track3, etc. under the cd folder. Any way just to browse the stupid thing as a folder tree instead of by artist, song title, etc? It's totally screwed up. XBMC handled this just fine(sigh). Guess maybe I'm in for some clean-up... DCDeac 11-20-06, 10:54 AM Oh, and why does it now tell you to download Zune? I installed it and it is a monster. Even after you shut it down, it runs as a background process and pretty much killed my machine. Kill the Zune process? Nope, it respawns. Had to uninstall it to finally get it to stop. I guess you can just use wmp11? So after some searching, I found this post (http://www.rokulabs.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=60481&sid=3dbadfe9c6a2b37b279539c5a67a6762) : 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 2. In the registry tree (on the left), expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Microsoft, MediaPlayer, and then Preferences. 3. Right-click HME, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4. Type EnableRemoteContentSharing, and then press ENTER. 5. Right-click EnableRemoteContentSharing, and then click Modify. 6. In the Value data text box, type 1, and then click OK. If you later decide to disable remote content sharing, you can repeat this procedure and change the value to 0 I did this and everything showed up perfectly. I was REALLLLLLY reluctant to use WMP11...I've hated previous versions of this software. But the way it interfaces with the Xbox 360 is pretty slick. I like how the movies you share show up on the Xbox blade with a thumbnail image of the video. I also dig being able to make a playlist on my office pc, and playback the playlist on the xbox...navigating my 20,000+ songs and making playlists in the Xbox environment was arduous! I made a Gears of War playlist that has (almost) every Metallica song every made. If I could have one feature though, I would want video and picture slideshow playback on the Xbox as well as musical playlists. I was thinking it would be cool to add several of those wmv-hd clips to a playlist as a hd demo of sorts. klipsch 11-20-06, 02:30 PM Thanks for the post Mach ... I'll definitely try this when I get home ... I hope this works zmanzman 11-20-06, 03:53 PM yes mach thanks i will try when i get home also klipsch 11-20-06, 07:00 PM Well, thanks Mach, but that still didn't work ... this is quite frustrating ... If I right click the xbox360 in the Media Sharing window I am able to get the MAC address, serial number, etc ... so I'm assuming the PC is seeing the 360, but the 360 refuses to see the PC. I might just uninstall wmp11 and go back to WMC since that worked great, but I really wanted to be able to stream videos Mach1_8 11-20-06, 08:27 PM Well, thanks Mach, but that still didn't work ... this is quite frustrating ... On the bright side, you can still stream videos using WMC if that's what you end up having to do... hancox 11-21-06, 08:45 AM I also have this problem - worked fine on same PC with same Xbox prior to a rebuild. Only difference is that the old build had the natural progression of WM10 --> WMC --> WM11. I even tried the new instructions and installed the Zune player. The Zune sharing picks up my 360, but it still doesn't show in the WM11 applet. I'm thinking an install of WMC is in order. aaronwt 11-21-06, 08:54 AM Oh, and why does it now tell you to download Zune? I installed it and it is a monster. Even after you shut it down, it runs as a background process and pretty much killed my machine. Kill the Zune process? Nope, it respawns. Had to uninstall it to finally get it to stop. I guess you can just use wmp11? Or has that just been re-branded as Zune? I have the Zune software and WMP11 installed in 3 PCs. I have no problems on any of them. They don't affect the PC operations at all. ~Ohdee~ 11-21-06, 10:00 AM Ok now I’m confused??? I (like many) had a hell of a time getting WMP 11 to stream to my 360. I followed the instructions from Xbox’s site telling me to download Zune. I downloaded Zune and it’s worked perfectly. I’m now running both Zune (I assumed I needed to in order to connect with my 360) and WMP 11. I’m using WMP 11 when I’m using the computer and Zune when I’m using my 360. I have a good computer so I’m not at all worried about Zune using resources but it seems silly using two separate media players if only WMP 11 is needed. Do you guys suggest I uninstall Zune and keep just keep playing with WMP 11 until I get it going or would you say it’s the same thing and just leave it as it is seeing as Zune isn’t affecting my computers performance? DCDeac 11-21-06, 10:45 AM "I have the Zune software and WMP11 installed in 3 PCs. I have no problems on any of them." But do you have 40,000 songs shared via samba on a unix server? I'm sure Zune is fine if you attach storage directly to a Windows box. Still not getting any of my music to show up on the 360 unless it's on storage that's owned by the Windows server. PC sees everything, 360 only sees music on the local pc hard drive. Registry setting made no difference. Why can't they get something this simple right? Xbmc is 100 times easier than this. GWBadger 11-21-06, 08:10 PM Can't get it to work with Zune. They don't see each other at all. Not sure if it's because both my PC and 360 are wireless or what. Anyone have any ideas? DCDeac 11-22-06, 11:24 AM Well, I ditched the whole zune/wmp11 nonsense and just got Media Center. Much better solution. Only way to go really at this point... GWBadger 11-22-06, 11:57 AM I think I found the problem. I need to uninstall the McAfee Privacy Service I have running. Media Center won't work with that so I assume it's the same issue with Zune. I'll try it tonight. GWBadger 11-24-06, 01:44 PM Uninstalling McAfee Privacy worked like a charm just in case anyone else runs into this. gamelover360 12-07-06, 09:16 AM I don't know if this will help, but here was my fix: I have my music on a server and I use a network drive to share my music with my office PC. I am getting Vista when it comes out, so hopefully the fact that WMP 11 is not streaming to my 360 will not matter. But still, it is annoying me that I can't get it to work. I was using Media connect, and everything worked fine. Then I install WMP 11 to stream videos, and the 360 cannot find the computer! Wait a minute, everything is fine with Media connect, then it isn't with WMP 11? Why in the heckk can't MS make things easy. I even went back to media connect and sure enough IT WORKS. Redownloaded WMP 11 and no work. MS, wake up. They should be ashamed of themselves. DCDeac 12-07-06, 10:24 AM "Ashamed of themselves" might be a little strong. What are the other streaming media solutions for next gen consoles available right now? Wii? Ps3? (crickets chirping...) Media Center is how it should be done. WMP 11 and connect are all beta-like at this point... Mach1_8 12-07-06, 01:54 PM I was using Media connect, and everything worked fine. Then I install WMP 11 to stream videos, and the 360 cannot find the computer! This problem was mentioned earlier in this thread. I saw the same thing when I first installed WMP11. If you haven't already, you need to go to setup and uninstall your computer. Once you've completed this, make sure WMP11 is setup properly and re-add your computer on the Xbox. It's a bit of a pain, but after about 20 minutes of troubleshooting, I was able to get this working and I must say it's really nice. I can't say enough good things about how the playlists interface between my office computer and my Xbox. Monstermile 12-07-06, 02:14 PM Anyone encounter crashes after installing WMP 11?? I had to install and uninstall it three seperate times. Every time I open it my pc shuts down. Finally rolled back to 10. Also tried Zune two different times and it does the same thing. Any suggestions outside of doing a reinstall of XP??? klipsch 12-08-06, 11:22 AM Anyone encounter crashes after installing WMP 11?? I had to install and uninstall it three seperate times. I would say, the only suggestion is to wait. I've called Microsoft in efforts to fix my problems (different that yours and noted in this thread). Basically they are in the process of finding a solution. I would give support a call. I'm figuring Vista will be the solution. scubadvr 12-13-06, 12:59 PM My whole home network is wireless (g). Is it possible to download high definition quality divx or xvid files (that are saved as avi's or mpg's) and stream them through Zune (software) or WMP11 to the XBox 360 (and therefore my home theater)? Second question: what about multi-channel audio? Is 5.1 surround an option when streaming from Zune to the Xbox? ebrigham 02-19-07, 01:48 PM Resurrecting this tread a bit to find out how see my album art on the 360. Current set up is WMP 11 on a Windows XP PC networked with my 360 upstairs. I don't have any problem finding/listening to the music - but cannot seem to get the album art. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance... Doctor Krypton 02-19-07, 03:06 PM Question for you guys. There was an update at one point, did you ever install that on your PC? ebrigham 02-19-07, 03:17 PM There was an update at one point, did you ever install that on your PC? I update religously/automatically, and just checked again - nothing left to update according to MS Update. My 360 should be updated too - so I am at a bit of a loss. Is there something I need to do with the file names or am I just dense... speco2003 02-19-07, 05:59 PM And is there yet a way to stream DVD content from the host PC? I know I can do it with various encoding programs but I am looking at playing just a disc back. styxx_78 09-09-07, 10:59 PM I am having similar problems as describe by others here. I spent about 3 hours today troubleshooting and on the phone with MS. What a waste of time that was sitting there while the guy on the other end read to me the steps on the xbox.com/pcsetup website. When it didn;t work (again) he told me to call back during the week. schticker 09-09-07, 11:43 PM I am having similar problems as describe by others here. I ended up fixing my problem by completly uninstalling WMP 11, and downloading and installing Windows Media Connect 2.0. Media sharing is kinda cool, although it sucks that everything needs to be in windows media format. |
