View Full Version : 1080P problem/compatability thread!
That is what pisses me off the most, not knowing if they will fix the 1080p problem and when. Because if they will and can fix it, i love the entire system, i could play games in 1080p and watch content in 1080p when available.
But if it is not fixable, then why bother with this, might as well return it.

The HD-DVD player comes with an update CD but it won't fix the 1080p problem that most of us are having with VGA. The same update can be downloaded from a broadband internet connection as well.

Thanks. Does the update CD give 1080p capability patch for the 360 or is it only intended for the HD-DVD drive?
dildatonr 11-25-06, 04:35 PM of course it's 1080p from both sources.
games can now be up to 1080p over component and vga.
movies need vga for 1080p.
There's almost no discernible difference between 1080i and 1080p. Why are you guys getting worked up for nothing? It boggles the mind. I guess you're just trying to justify your purchase of an overpriced 1080p monitor? Anyways, have fun continually frustrating yourself and ruining any enjoyment in your life =)
trgraphics 11-25-06, 05:35 PM I know what they might be planning in terms of a hardware fix but was sort of hoping they could handle it with a firmware patch.
I have a XBR3 and am running the 360 with HD DVD add-on on component at 1080i.
I am is miffed about the XBR / 1080p thing as anyone but there is no big downside as long as they fix it soon.
So far, the HD DVDs are mastered at 1080i and your TV has to do the dirty work of 1080p conversion - likewise the 360 games I think. This may change in the future though, at least with HD DVD and that is when it will matter.
All HD Dvd's, save a few tv shows are mastered 1080P 24. The 1st gen players could not output 1080P. It was nothing to do with the movie itself.

I guess you could say the same thing about upconverted sd dvd. They are 1920 x1080 as well, Of course that would not be any more accurate than what you said.
There is a difference betwen 1080i and 1080p if you care enough to see it. To argue there is no difference is, well... not true.

I guess that is why there is no difference between 640X480 and 1024X768 video gaming?
Of course there is a difference between 1080i and 1080p, to me 1080i is just 720p stretched to fill my 1080p screen. While 1080p means the souce was made to fill my screen with actual content.
Blah.

Yikes, you are right!
I just looked on the back of two HD DVDs and they said 1080p.
Ignorance is bliss but ow, having this misconception corrected, I am as ticked off as everyone else :)
Microsoft, you really push my buttons!
720p over vga is screwed up on my projector (Infocus 7200)....it looks great except for being pushed over to the left. i have zero overscan on my setup so this is unrecoverable video info via tweaking......
things are proprtioned perfectly at 1360x768 and that looks great for HD-DVD but not as much for 720p games and the dashboard which look a little soft at that resolution because of the conversion.
any info appreciated

How does your TV deinterlace a VIDEO GAME from 1080i to 1080P
Not a movie, not a video. But a Game that is actually rendered.
Movies are film at 24 frames per second locked
Video is 15, 30 or 60 frames per second locked
Video Games are anything from 5 FPS to 300 FPS with no lock.
With lock, it wont help the 5 FPS - so developers can lock to 60 thats fine. But it is not always 60.
So thats why 1080P is important, you skip deinterlacing - With all games are rendered in P anyhow. You can't render a game in interlaced.
I wish all the members would get into PC gaming to understand all this. Everyone thinks you can just deinterlace 1080I output of a game to 1080P and get the same results. NO, you can't. The Flippin idiot that invented interlaced should be tared, feathered, and hung.
So anyone that thinks 1080p is a waste of money, nope sorry your 1080I tv was. **** even with 1080P TV's, finally they are "close" still not as good to a computer monitor that I had 8 years ago. Even computer monitors with windows 95 possibly had as much resolution as our HDTV's do now (if you had a Professional monitor). The TV industry needs to get there heads out of their butts, and push on further.

Well, I can tell from your picture that you are a serious dude in the know about stuff like this so maybe you can explain the exact reason why XBOX 360 will not work with Sony XBR TVs at 1080p.
Is it the sync on green thing or a Microsoft plot or what? I agree with everything you say about the primitive state of 1080p TV but do you think MS will come up with a fix for this or not? If yes, what is it likely to be?
If you really do not know don't lose face, just make something up. I will believe almost anything so long as it sounds promising :)

I am a bit confused by your statements. Based on what you said, the resolution is not the issue, it is the deinterlacing. So if a game is rendered at 720p, how is it being interlaced properly to output at 1080i? Also, if a game is rendered at 1080p, how is it being interlaced to 1080i for those without a 1080p tv? Based on what you are saying, nothing should be able to be output interlaced, only progressive? I understand that framerate on the games vary and this can present a challenge, but again, 1080i to 1080p is not an issue with a proper deinterlacer as long as it can lock the signal at that series of frames.

Ultimate Cap 11-26-06, 05:55 PM Just curious what info do you have that the Sony V2500's work through VGA. I have this tv and I have been waiting for an HDMI cable to come out because I have been afraid that the HD-DVD drive would'nt work...
Me too . .i just got a KDL-40v2500 . .don't know abouth the VGA either . . dammit had the cable at one time and gave it to a friend who got plasma before I got my LCd . . . anyone know the answer on VGA with this TV . . oh hell maybe I ll just read the manny! ;)
Ultimate Cap 11-26-06, 06:01 PM The Sony 1080p V2500's are reported to work with the Xbox 360's 1080p VGA. This is weird because the V2500's are not supposed to support 1080p over VGA, and it doesn't work with the XBR2/3's which do support 1080p.
So... has anyone figured out what it is about the Xbox 360's VGA that is causing the problem (and getting around restrictions for other sets)? I've read a lot of posts suggesting it's sending Sync on Green, but have never seen this confirmed.
There are adapters available for adding or removing Sync on Green, so there may be a relatively inexpensive hardware solution.
Since I have a V2500, I'm planning on getting a 360 (and if that works well with 1080p vga, also the HD-DVD add-on). But, if MS fixes the problem, it might break this unexpected 1080p vga bonus for us. Unless... we can figure out what's really going on. So... any EE's who can test the 360's signal and let us know what it's doing? Anyone come across anything?
You said reported . .any conformation on this before I spend 40$
I don't understand why micro$oft won't make any official announcement regarding 1080p and certain 1080p TV sets that are not compatible with their crap?

Good question. This thread is supposed to help clarify the issue but the more I read it, the more confused I get. ... reports of this, reports of that... How about some solid info on what the real problem is in the first place?
So far, many posts I have made on the subject have only served to add to the confusion :)
esoxlee 11-26-06, 06:39 PM I don't understand why Microsoft wouldn't come out and say what they have planed to do, if they don't fix this issue i want to return the xbox and hd-dvd drive, i'd rather just get the Toshiba for double the money.
MS knows the longer delay and the lack of information will ensure that people will no longer have the option of getting a refund for the player once the return policy expires. So you'll be stuck with keeping it. I called XBOX support 5 days ago and said they won't start working on a fix until the end of the month when they have gathered enough customer info for the problem.
Ultimate Cap 11-26-06, 08:44 PM I went to BB again looking for a VGA for my new tv ad he said as long as I don't have the HD DVD player for the 360 . .I shouldn't worry about it since the games are only in 1080i and I wouldn't see the diff anyways . . .he also recomended switching to the 720p standard to see if I thought it looked better . .on his 1080i CRT apparently the 720p looks better.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
that is my problem too, i have until the 16th of December to return this xbox 360, and i want to know what they are doing to fix the problem, the only way to do anything is to call 2-3 times a day to nag the hell out of tech support and you might as well call Microsofts main tel number, and complain to their cusotmer care dept.
Just curious what info do you have that the Sony V2500's work through VGA. I have this tv and I have been waiting for an HDMI cable to come out because I have been afraid that the HD-DVD drive would'nt work...It works. I can confirm it. See my post #34: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=8978705#post8978705
On the V2500, 1080p vga calibrates to grayscale similar to component at 1080i. Color saturation, however, seems a bit less (but not washed-out, that's too strong a description) than component with Color at 50. I'm guessing, for now, that it'd be comparable to component Color in the low 40's.
If you have an xbox 360 and a V2500, you should _definitely_ get the hd-dvd add on and not wait for an hdmi. Component at 1080i looks great. With film source, 1080i or 1080p may be irrelevant. And for the cost of a MS VGA cable, you'll have 1080p vga which also looks excellent (the colors w/ games seems vibrant, and I'm still not sure if the color saturation is off for hd-dvd's... but if off, it's not far off). The HD-A2 player doesn't support 1080p, and the X2 is way expensive. So why wait.
You said reported . .any conformation on this before I spend 40$ :confused:A whole $40 ;) Yes, I stand by it -- it works. I've been here for some time, so you can complain bitterly to me if it doesn't. ;)
And if you, or other v2500 owners get, please stop by one of the v2500 threads and let us know what you think.
Do the new 360's ship with the 1080p patch included on CD...or is it only available as a download? I don't have a DSL connection at home (use one cell phone for everything). You don't need broadband. I updated through my laptop's dial-up. You enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and can then connect to Xbox Live for the update. It takes about 20 or 30 minutes. The update for 1080p VGA doesn't come with the update for the HD-DVD drive itself. The HD-DVD drives comes w/ a CD/DVD; the 1080p VGA update will be downloaded when you connecto to Xbox Live.
I don't know why MS doesn't allow a download for updates that can be burned to CD/DVD. If they do, I couldn't find a download link. Forcing everyone to use Xbox Live, I guess, is one of those strategy things. But not to worry... dial-up works. I just wouldn't try downloading any 1080p content. ;)
Only if that's actually the problem. I don't think it is. I have a green-sync capable monitor with BNC connections that gets no sync if I disconnect H and V when hooked up to the 360's VGA output. However, it doesn't do 1920x1080, so maybe they used it for just that resolution. But I think that would be an almost inexplicably weird decision on their part.1. The manuals for the Sony XBR2/3's and V2500's explicitly state they do not support Sync on Green or Composite Sync.
2. The XBR2/3's _do_ support 1080p VGA, yet don't work at this resolution with the Xbox 360. Question: does VGA work with the XBR's at lesser resolutions?
3. The V2500's do _not_ support 1080p VGA, yet it works. Very weird. The screen initially says Not supported, but that goes away when any button is pushed on the remote. The PC menu reports the resolution as 1920 x 1080 @ 60 hz. And, I can confirm it's definitely sharp and a high resolution matching 1080i over component.
4. If XBR2/3 (and other's) get their fix; it may very well break it for V2500 owners.
So, those of us for whom it works, and those wanting it to work, have a common interest in figuring out what's going on. If it's just Sync on Green, then there are inexpensive dongle hardware solutions. And, if Sync on Green bypasses Sony's hobbling of 1080p vga input for the V2500's, then there's a similar solution for these sets to get 1080p vga for other sources besides the xbox 360 (and to keep the xbox working if a fix changes that).
I'll be happy to experiment w/ my v2500 and the xbox 1080p vga. But I don't want to buy stuff (change to sync on green, and see if a pc's 1080p vga then works) w/out some expectation that it's likely to work.
Re: Sync on Green maybe just being used for the 1080p... that's possible. See #2 -- does the vga work at other resolutions for the XBR's? It does at other resolutions also for the V2500's (and there's no "Unsupported" shown at these resolutions).
For those who may understand this stuff, here's a clue. When I choose Auto Adjust for the 1080p VGA on the V2500, the Pitch is set to wildy different settings. I'll choose Auto Adjust and get Pitch at Min, or -24 or whatever... it varies each time. I just set it manually to 0. I'm totally guessing... but doesn't that come across as a Sync issue?
"There are adapters available for adding or removing Sync on Green, so there may be a relatively inexpensive hardware solution."If you can recommend an inexpensive adapter for ADDING Sync on Green, I'll give it a try w/ my V2500. Maybe some XBR2/3 owners might want to try an adapter that removes it? Then we'll have this nailed (or not:;). Edit: I don't think the Xbox is using Sync on Green, but instead, Reduced Blanking timings.

I realize that. That doesn't mean sync-on-green is the reason Xbox 360 1920x1080 VGA output won't display on an XBR2/3. People just saw the 360's 1080p not work on the Sony, saw that statement in the manual, and jumped to a conclusion. It's possible (very probable, I'd say) that these two things are an unrelated coincidence.
phantomhitman 11-27-06, 12:12 PM I think petimic needs to step in and post his info again to clear this up.
TV Casualty 11-27-06, 02:04 PM We're not going to get anything out of Microsoft anytime soon. This is typical "evil empire" (meaning not just Microsoft) behavior - say they're working on it and hope the anger fades away over time.
Earliest I'd expect a fix is the Spring update unless they come out with an HDMI adapter/dongle.
It's pathetic, but there's nothing anyone can do. In this case, we are Microsoft's bitch.
i don't think you can get true digital out with even a dongle and HDMI, since the output is analog i think. I called and asked and they said the only way to get HDMI is with new hardware revision, so anyone with an xbox 360 is not going to get one , unless they buy a new one.

Just wondering if you have to set your set everytime you turn on the 360... or is it saved for 360 and HD-DVD then returns for normal viewing, when you switch between XBOX and TV, or DVD or VCR. Please help. Thanks for all the info. You are truly changing my mind on waiting for the HDMI cable.

Please help. Thanks for all the info. You are truly changing my mind on waiting for the HDMI cable.I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I have my Xbox connected to Input 8, VGA. When I turn on the Xbox and the v2500 and choose Input 8, then the settings stay the way I have them set. It works the same as the other inputs -- the settings stick for each input. There's no Custom mode for VGA, but the settings stick. The only trivial issue is the tv says "Input Unsupported" or something initially. But all you have to do is hit any button on the remote and it goes away and stays away.
If you have an xbox 360, I can't imagine why you'd wait. I bought the whole thing -- xbox premium, vga cable and hd-dvd add on... without _any_ savings or discount. Now that's debateable whether it'd be better to just get the HD-A2. But, I wanted to get 1080p VGA (and experiment with it). Plus, I get the other features of Xbox besides just games. But... to get HD-DVD for just the cost of the add-on... definitely... it works great. I brought it up to my brother-in-laws house over the weekend and hooked it up to his hd projection tv using component, and KK looked excellent.
For V2500 owners, I definitely recommend the hd-dvd add-on, and also the vga cable. The console and game demos on the xbox through vga have rich colors -- no washout. I'm still not sure if hd-dvd over vga is under-saturated. But component at 1080i looks great and color saturation can be set for it, so that's just another good choice.

As for the VGA... is 1080p better than 720p or 1080i from the xb360? Dunno... if games are rendered in progressive, I'd think 720p and 1080p are better than interlaced. If they're scaled from 720p to 1080p, then the tv could do the scaling instead. I'm an xbox noob, so other's could give better answers.

No that makes sense to me... I understand now that it doesn't affect the other inputs, wasn't to sure about that before. I haven't changed my settings to far from the standard on any of the external inputs, but you have been extremely helpful. Thanks! I'm not waiting anymore. Going this week...
Dan Lau 11-28-06, 07:06 AM well the HD-DVD drive is useless for me, i tested on the following with vga cable:
SONY XBR2 46" LCD TV, half the screen is hidden.
Dell 2407 24" LCD Monitor (lower left of monitor has weird horizontal stripes
i called XBOX support once again today, i got another woman she said they know about the problem and will relase some sort of "Adapter" to take care of the 1080p issue. lol
Anyone know anything about such a weird thing?
This Nov 8 Joystiq post quotes Major Nelson's blog that says they're working on a fix:

I seriously doubt it will be an "adapter", rather, another system update. So be patient and in the meantime Major Nelson recomends dropping to 768p over VGA.
esoxlee 11-28-06, 10:48 AM This Nov 8 Joystiq post quotes Major Nelson's blog that says they're working on a fix:

Yes, be patient, wait for the return policy on the drive to expire. The marketing people at MS are geniuses. Make customers spend another 50 bucks on a cable to find out that the player is useless for 1080p.
I "believe" microsoft currently only supports component and VGA and will eventually support HDMI, because of some agreement with the "GAME MODE" on samsung HDTV's. As you can see most new Samsung HDTV's can support 1080p through component or VGA - this gave me a good reason to buy the Samsung 6187W, great TV by the way for Gaming and HD DVD viewing. This could have helped Sammy sales. Don't worry people they will eventually release the HDMI cable, it's just a matter of time. Not too sure about Sony and other brands but I don't think the majority of those brands will support 1080p over component or VGA, assuming the TV is 1080p capable.
hooked up to my jvc g11 projector and some discs play fine in 1080p (home made recordings off of hd dvr) but for store bought discs i get ---macrovision.
dang it. is it the xbox360???
tanukibear 11-30-06, 07:02 AM There's a new update released today to fix the old update (I put up a URL to Major Nelson's blog, but I am not allowed to post URL's until after 5 posts on this forum). Anyone still having issues with 1080p? I still am, with my BenQ FP241W. My PC (also through VGA), my Mac, and my PS3 all do a 1080 signal just fine, leaving my 360 sitting all alone, by itself, not allowed to play on the sooooper-high-def playground.
FrancescoP 11-30-06, 07:07 AM Dashboard Update (aka the 1080p fix)
The next time you sign into Xbox Live, you’ll be prompted for a dashboard update.
The update contains:
-Improved support for HD video output over VGA, including 1080p resolution
-Improved plug and play performance for wired headsets when being used with wireless controllers
-Changes made to recently played games list to improve accuracy
This update is being rolled out across the world, so you may not get it exactly at this moment, so be patient.
Some user on neoGAF confirmed 1080p is now working on Sony XBR3 sets:

Wow, I posted having problems with the very same monitor in this very thread just minutes ago, and nobody noticed.
I assume this means no updates for us 1080p component hopefuls? I have an HP 1080p set and was hoping this update would help me out.

FrancescoP 11-30-06, 11:11 AM Any Samsung user here?
On the Nelson blog they are complaining that the patch doesn't work:
MAJOR PLEASE HELP!! SAMSUNG 244T 24" LCD - Native Resolution 1920 x 1200 - I Select 1080p with the new "update" and IT STILL DISPLAYS A resolution of 1440 x 1050!!! WTF?! This monitor MOST DEFINITELY SUPPORTS 1920 x 1080, I've set that resolution in Windows XP MYSELF!!! I am so disappointed!!!! What's the deal?
I contacted Samsung and they told me this monitor supports 1920 x 1080 over VGA! :( :( :(
And another one:
Major,
The 1080p update still doesn't work on my Samsung 480p/720p/1080p TV.
Your friends at MS did not fix it.
Try again.
phantomhitman 11-30-06, 11:18 AM seems like the sony xbr2 users cried more/better than anyone else ;) It really sucks that soem tvs work, others dont, and apparently some worked before the update but now do not work.
I guess the emails / phone calls, and bad press in online tech news sites paid off, too bad i took my Xbox 360 back for a refund yesterday, oh well....
Too bad, i liked the idea of the xbox 360 , too bad microsoft had to skip on some features that would have made this the best console so far, and that is some reliable internal parts,
The worst part is the DVD player in the xbox 360, scratching disks if you even sneeze, and don't even touch the damn thing, nobody thought about adding 20 cent foam to protect the disk from tilting inside i guess.
I dont know, then again, there are lots of people saying this thing breaks for no reason, so forget it. Wait until the 5th or 6th generation xBox, microsoft usually gets it right after having the consumer test and debug their software, this is just another case of microsoft letting the consumer do the dirty work for them.

AH, no. Have you followed this thread?
My Sony V2500 works with the Fall VGA 1080p update. Now seems there's a new update... if it fixes the problem with the XBR2's, then it might break the VGA for the V2500's. So what to do? Is there a way to roll back an update?
Has MS explained what the VGA is doing -- RGBHV, RGsB (Sync on Green, RGBS (Composite Sync) after the 1080p update and what's changed with the new update? Or is this some secret that would cause civilization to collapse (we wouldn't want that of course)?

Janvitos 11-30-06, 03:48 PM Well this is great.
The new update released today fixed my issue with 1080p which was giving me "Invalid signal" on the TV.
Now everything works well through VGA.
Btw, my tv is a Digimate DGL37.
Thanks MS!
I am now heading out to buy the sweet sweet HD-DVD player.
I am running an Xbox into a Sony 1292 CRT via VGA. I ran the first update and it didn't seem to change anything. I had only screen resolution choices with the highest being 1920x1280. This was the same before and after the first console update. Either case I had no choices of HDTV rez 720p or 1080p.
Now for the fun part, It was working until I ran the last update, looks like they messed with the hoz sync at 1920x1280. It was switched it from pos to neg and now 1920 x 1080 isn't locking up any more.
This seems to be a work in progress and I'm not sure they are getting good info.
Anyone else having this much fun?

BrianKR 11-30-06, 08:50 PM Is the washed out color issue fixed with the new update?
I took back my VGA cable because it completely washed out the colors in 1920x1080/60hz mode.
rconn2 have you tried the update yet?
Are your colors improved / do you have more video options now than you did before the update?
BTW
I hope this isn't a totally stupid question but is 1920x1080/60hz mode the same as 1080p?

It is about as close as you are gonna get via VGA timings. It is roughly equivilent to 1080p/60, and it is progressive.

Did you load the update?? Was very curious to know if your V2500 still is working and if it is are you noticing anything different?Uhhh no. How about yourself? ;) Seriously, I don't want to lose 1080p vga so want a confirmation. A couple of owners of the Euro W series (their V2500) have reported it still works, so it probably does.
I'm also curious what MS changed. So far I still haven't found anything solid about what the 360's vga is doing at 1080p. I've been searching for an inexpensive way to test the signal, but haven't found anything (if anyone know, please let me know). So, it's important to keep that back-door to getting 1080p vga working on the v2500 until it's figured out.
BrianKR: I'm not sure the colors are washed out on 1080p vga. I did set the Brightness on the V2500 down to 28 to 32 (based on Avia) and Picture up to 98 and pq improved significantly. With KK, colors did seem just a little faded; with a regular DVD, I couldn't tell the difference between 1080i component. I played the HD-DVD Mutiny on the Bounty last night and it was so saturated on Component I switched to VGA -- it was still saturated but much better. When I did some comparisons w/ some color bars between Component and VGA it seemed the VGA was very roughly at around the mid to upper 40's Color saturation.
MarkMan23 12-01-06, 07:53 AM Hi all!
I just got a Sony KDL46XBR2 LCD TV. I currently have my PLAYSTATION 3 hooked up via HDMI/1080P settings. I was wondering if anyone knew if my XBOX 360 would display 1080P correctly via VGA? I heard it was fixed, but if anyone has tried it on this set or know of any successes, please give me the info/findings.
Also aside from that, regarding the 360 HD-DVD player, I am aware that it has the ability to upscale DVDs to higher resolutions... is the difference worth it? I'm thinking of getting one and making it my primary DVD player while the PS3 handles the Blu-Ray. Will the HD-DVD player upscale to 1080P via VGA as well(for regular DVDs)?
Many thanks in advance.
Sorry, n00b here. :)

vga does not have 480p, 720p, or 1080p because it is mainly a pc monitor format. You get pc screen resolutions instead of the p terms you are used to. 1920x1080 is 1080p.
I am having trouble telling if the new patch fixed the washed out colors. I want to say it helped at least a little. I do know that when running 1080p for 360 games they are looking a lot better. I have no idea what type of hd magical fairy dust the 1080p setting does but it cleared out some "rough anti aliasing" edges for me that some games display. I did not want to go through the hastle of switching between vga and component connections over and over last night just to see if the colors are more vibrant.

I have the same TV and, yes, the latest update does fix the compatibility problem between our TVs and the 360 connected via VGA.

I have Sony XBR2. I did the patch download, VGA 1920x1080 select and compared with componet using Batman Begins. VGA does fill the entire screen but the colors are washed out (reminds me of low data rate sourced DVD, you know, the DVD that have all the director comments and other data grabbing sources that diminish picture and audio quality on DVDs) and resolution is poor when compared componet with proper settings and cable. If this is a data source problem, then there is no solution. I can't image that being the issue due to the large data capacity of HD-DVD. Arrrrhhh!

Techically true, but you'll still likely get a garbage quality picture if the DVD you playing has a lot of feature content that steals data capacity away from video and audio. Feature content includes director comments, photos of cast and crew, ect.... Sony created Superbit DVDs to max out the quality (data capacity assigned) of/to the video and audio. Best Buy initially sold them for $50.00/ea. Today you can get them for $10.00/ea. They are getting rid of them and excessively pricing Blu Ray and HD-DVDs, like they did with Sony's Super Bit DVDs.
DacHawk,
I was not inferring that DVD is the same quality as HD-DVD. I was simply pointing out to MarkMan23 that you can up-convert DVDs to 1080p without the add-on. I have the HD-DVD add-on. I think it was a very wise purchase but its not required to up-convert DVDs to 1080p over VGA.

my sony xbr2 lcd is happy with the 1080p update and so am i.
for the record on sony sets, you can set it to "video" which will bring in a much more saturated color shceme. you can choose between many color setttings (warm1,2, neutral, cool etc.) and the ability to set brightness, contrast, backlight, etc.
imo, vga equals or is better than component because now vga has saturation, blacks, and better sharpness.
I have Sony XBR2. I did the patch download, VGA 1920x1080 select and compared with componet using Batman Begins. On your VGA input, set it to Video then adjust the Brightness down to 35-38 and you'll see a big difference. The default Brightness level of 50 is way too high. Give it a shot, works for me.
slapshot1848 12-01-06, 01:12 PM I agree with the above poster...when using the video setting, VGA has a fantastic picture and IMO is sharper and more detailed than component.... So to anyone not happy with VGA colors make sure you set it to VIDEO not TEXT!
quick question to those that know, what is the auto adjust feature on the VGA setting and what does it do?
quick question to those that know, what is the auto adjust feature on the VGA setting and what does it do?
I believe (don't quote me on it) that attempts to auto adjust the pitch, screen position, etc. just like a normal LCD/CRT for the computer.
To preface I am using a vga cable to achieve 1080p on my Samsung LN-S4695. 1080p seems to be working great for games and all the content on my 360's hard drive, unlike the gentleman above. The upscaled 720p trailers look great. Unfortunately, when I try to stream 1080p WMV's from my PC, the xbox automatically pillarboxes the feed and I get horizontal compression. It is definitely not the files, as they are 16:9 1080p and display properly on my computer monitor. For reference, I am using HD WMV found on Microsoft's website. Any ideas or fixes for this problem?
I have the same LCD screen, and I have been wondering if the vga/rgb input is indeed a 1080p signal.
I also own a PS3 (yes I said the "P-Word") and it is definately 1080p over HDMI

Give it a shot, works for me.I have a v2500 and adjusted Brightness down to around 28 - 32 and Picture up to 96 - 98. Edit: Mode should be set to TEXT after the 11/30 update. These settings should work for the xbr2's also. Your Brightness is close to mine, so it definitely needs to be lowered into at least the 30's.

Gad Zookz 12-01-06, 08:06 PM I did the update yesterday and switched from 1080i on Component to 1080p on VGA for my XBR3.
Trying a HD DVD movie, I thought the PQ looked a bit crisper and more vivid at 1080i on Component than 1080p on VGA. Since the XBR2/3 does not do 1080p on Component I cannot test that.
Has anyone else noted this. If so, did you find a solution with VGA settings as others above?
MarkMan23 12-02-06, 04:39 AM You don't need the HD-DVD add on to get 1080P via VGA. If you have the 1080P update on your 360 you can display DVDs in 1080P over VGA without the HD-DVD drive.
Many thanks for the information! I almost shelled out $200 for the HD-DVD drive yesterday.
It took me awhile to realize while looking for the display settings that the 1080P was no longer listed and I had to choose the x1080 resolution. LOL, silly me.
Ultimate Cap 12-02-06, 09:50 AM All should test the update . .I was told you could always clear your cache in the Xboxs dash board to "reset" . . then again who knows the trouble you'll be causing yourself then?
Oh well I have a v2500 and will go out and get the VGA and test it on ine since I updated tit anyways . . I have no HD drive so it will just be on the games and current gen DVDs.
Ultimate: the last update works well w/ the V2500. Get your VGA cable...
Lupismaximus 12-02-06, 01:16 PM Congrats on the update working for all Sony LCD XBR2 and XBR3 Owners. This is a step in the right direction.
It seems no one has confirmed, on a first hand experience, that the update doesn't or does work for the SXRD RP televisions. To answer a question that has been asked, YES, the VGA input accepts 1080P signal. The reason that the last update didn't work was because the horizontal signaling was off.
I know there are a lot of speculations regarding it doesn't work on any SXRD TV (A2000 or XBR2), but I would like to hear from someone who actually owns this TV and has tried it! If it does, is the picture shrunken down, or does it fill the screen. The last time I tried it on my TV, the picture was smaller, no matter how much you stretched the screen. I know it doesn't work on the component on an SXRD 60" XBR2 RP, since I tried it yesterday!
Thank you!!!
ransworld 12-02-06, 06:36 PM When I set my Hyundai CRT to 1080p through VGA, it will only display an image when the Xbox 360 screen saver activates! As soon as I press a button, the screen turns black again. The screen saver image appears distorted, and every odd scan line jumps from left to right.
Is it possible that my Xbox 360 is sending an interlaced signal through VGA at 1920x1080 when the screen saver activates?
I own a Samsung HL-6168W. 1080p, 720p work fine over VGA for games and DVD's.
What video card are you using on your PC? Thanks.
Jim
I can vouch for 1080p over VGA on the Samsung hl-s6187w. I think the vga looks a lot better and like the upscaling of DVD's. I also found Transcoded divx unwatchable on the components, on vga it looks ok. I am happy.
Hi,
What video card are you using on your PC? Thanks.

crf1000 12-02-06, 10:03 PM Hey rconn2,
Quick question again... I was already set after talking with you to just going out and buying the HD-DVD player but was advised by my wife that I probably wanted to wait to purchase it till after Christmas, hint, hint she stated. So, after spending about a couple hours trying to convince her to let me have an early X-mas present I gave up. My question is do you find you get a better picture after you adjusted the settings and after the latest update with VGA for not only movies but games compared to component. Which due you personally prefer now? And for games are they also upconverting to 1080p through VGA? I mean I know they don't make games in 1080p but are you seeing a big difference in the games as well?
XavierYZ 12-02-06, 10:25 PM now if only microsoft will address the issues with 1080p over component
Hey guys did everyone lose 1080P over component for HD DVD 's with the last update ?

HD-DVD King Kong finally had that wow that was missing before. It's as contrasty as component and the vga is now staying plugged-in. The console looked good before the 11-30 update fix... plenty of color... but has a bit more saturation now. And yes, everything... console, games, hd-dvd, dvd gets converted to 1080p over vga. As for seeing a big difference... component at 1080i also looks very good so it'd only look different if the set was having trouble de-interlacing or w/ 2:3 pulldown (which I think the v2500's and xbr2/3's have failed... though I haven't noticed). But, for games you want "p" and for video you want 1080... 1080p.

I have the 60" SXRD and the VGA cable. I've tried everything with this setup and still cannot get it to work. An error appears on screen saying "not supported" or something to that effect. I'm really bummed since I thought for sure I'd be all set after the update. Don't get me wrong though. I'm extremely satisfied running at 1080i on this set. The picture is just amazing. My two top priorities for Microsoft would be the following:
#1: FIX 1080P FOR THE SONY SXRD!
#2: Support 1080P over component
#3: Offer an HDMI output/cable
Needless to say, this is still the best television I've ever owned...period!
Redoryx 12-03-06, 01:19 PM From what i have read regarding the $ony SXRD's. These TV's do not suport 1080P over component or VGA. Only the HDMI input is capable of the 1080P. Not sure if this was a deliberate ploy from $ONY to steer people to buy the PS3 over the 360 or not......hmmmmmm.

TV Casualty 12-03-06, 04:47 PM Get a PS3. It can do 1080p just fine. :D
Yes. Too bad it has problems with LOWER resolutions.
That's been the PS3 in a nutshell so far - make everything look awesome on paper, then rush a half-finished product out the door.

I am just guessing here but Sony seems to be focused on getting a BD player into as many homes as possible to get an upper hand in the format war.
MS on the other hand has little to gain or lose no matter which format, HD-DVD or BD, comes out on top. It seems the focus on 360 is to provide the best possible gaming and online experience to everyone. In that regard their choice of HD over VGA is the right choice, technical issues aside, consider there are many people who do not own a HDTV but have a computer monitor which can handle HD VGA input. The decision to withheld a HMDI ouput may also have to do with the the uncertainty of HDMI 1.3 (I believe the spec for 1.3 was not finalized until earlier this year, 6 months after 360 hit the market). Given possible supply, hand shake and other technical issues. MS may choose to wait a little while longer before they release HDMI (if it is even technical possible). I'd rather MS comes out with an external Video Processor optimized for enhancing visual in games, of course this is just my fantasy in reality MS will never do that.

My SXRD projector (vpl-vw100) doesn't work with the vga cable and a 1920x1080 signal. 1080i over component is fine (1080p over component gives a frequency out of range error), but when the vga cable is used and 1920x1080 is selected, only part of the screen shows up and the projector says the res is 1024x748.

swanlee 12-04-06, 11:12 AM "now if only microsoft will address the issues with 1080p over component"
It will never happen for upscaled DVD or HD-DVD's. It is a legal issue, AACS regulations will not allow a device to upscale SD-DVD's over component due to piracy concerns. CCS regulation prohibits 1080P over component for HD-DVD for similar reasons.
VGA is a computer interface and is exempt from both of these regulations. MS was smart to find and enable this loophole for VGA.
buylongterm 12-04-06, 03:29 PM So I'm safe to assume that I should NOT run out and get the VA cables for XBOX 360 (I have the KDS-R60XBR2)

If MS didn't have a stake in the format war, they would not have pushed to build an HD-DVD player themselves. MS stands to gain royalty payments for HD-DVD from their interactivity layer standard that was accepted. On the flip side, Blu-Ray, by using Java, stands as a direct competitor to MS' interests and revenue in their multimedia division.
As for the HDMI... I have no idea.
Krausker 12-04-06, 04:59 PM #2: Support 1080P over component
Sony doesn't support 1080p over component.
By this do you mean only the tv's they make now, or do you mean they have also said that they won't support it in future tv's as well? (due to all those 1080p movie rules I guess?)
wxkid23 12-04-06, 09:29 PM I have an XBR2 RP and the 1080p does not work via VGA. 720p via component looks great though and unless they start magically making several 1080p games it's not a big deal.
1080p works nicely on VGA with the v2500. So far not a single issue.

stellium 12-06-06, 04:11 PM Hello! If I am posting in the wrong section, please let me know and I'll move my post.
We have a 67" Samsung DLP hooked up with Xbox 360. The tv has progressively taken longer and longer to turn on and when it does the picture is "frozen". This can sometimes take up to 20 mins to correct itself. It is under warranty, we call. They come out & look at it, declare it is the lamp. He installs the lamp today, but also tells me that Samsungs are horrible TVs and that the Xbox is causing our problem. I just spoke with him and he says he suspects that it may be a LVDS cable or board, but Samsung has relayed to us to use the TV for a week and see if it is corrected, if not, call them back. Okay. So. Is this true about the Xbox? Should we not have it hooked up to the Samsung and is it the cause of our tv freezing up. Thanks in advance and I apologize if I posted in the wrong forum!
HappyFunBoater 12-06-06, 04:22 PM The tech says Samsung sucks, the Xbox is the problem, and your Low Voltage Differential Signalling cable is bad?! Funny stuff. Personally, I think it's the differential girdle spring.

EricM407 12-06-06, 05:40 PM DGS? Bad lamp usually means a cooling problem. I'd check the spurving bearings on the panametric fan.

So that doesn't sound right to you? I don't think they KNOW what's wrong with it, personally...but I can't imagine that the Xbox is the culprit, you know? And sorry, but I'm a very electronically challenged chick, most of that stuff is gibberish to me :D
I'm having the problem with washed out color on my WD-62927 and the vga connection. It blows. I tried adjusting the contrast and brightness to no avail.Do you have the latest 11/30 update? There was a dramatic difference in color saturation seen on a Sony V2500 after that update. Before, colors were a bit drab; after they pop (and may even be a slight bit oversaturated... but better to be just a little than less).
I watched HD DVD Aeon Flux last night through 1080p VGA to a V2500 and it was a non-stop WOW!. It may be the best pq I've ever seen anywhere from any source for any set. [ironically, 1080p vga isn't even supposed to work with the V2500!].
It seems to be hit or miss w/ this xbox 360 1080p vga. Most sets don't have a Color Saturation setting. One possibility is to get a device like an Extron 202xi or 203xi. They sell them used very cheaply. I have one coming in tomorrow so I haven't tried it yet. But it's supposed to have controls to make adjustments in the vga signal. I'm also hoping to figure out what's going on w/ the xbox 360's vga... what's unique about it that gets it to work w/ the V2500's when vga from a PC doesn't work.
EricM407 12-07-06, 07:12 AM what's unique about it that gets it to work w/ the V2500's when vga from a PC doesn't work.
Have you verified that and/or tried any custom timings with a PC utility? Maybe it's just an undocumented feature.
wyldbill 12-07-06, 03:33 PM Because someone asked.
I have a Sony KDS-R70XBR2 (new 70" LCOS XBR2). Even with the new update, I can't get 1920x1080 over VGA. I can get the 1280x768 (?) res, but when trying 1920x1080, it gets "pillar boxed" but the image is chopped off. I'm assuming that this is due to the horizontal scan mismatch explained earlier.
FWIW,

after this past update, i can no longer get ANY picture to display from my 360 while using my vga cable. component works fine, but vga is dead....
I get 1080p via vga just fine (haven't tried component).. I'm using a 37" westinghouse FP-LCD. This TV allows you to send 1080p via any input (except s-video and composite, of course).... so I have my computer hooked up via 1080p DVI, my digital cable box hooked up via 1080i DVI, and my xbox 360 hooked up via 1080p VGA. Braveheart looks great, the games look great, etc. My guess is that some "1080p" TVs don't support 1080p via VGA, and will only display it via HDMI. This is not microsofts fault, methinks, but the TV manufacturers fault for making a display that only accepts 1080p via a certain input type.
wthephasdin 12-08-06, 03:58 PM I had the 1080p for games and dashboard but 1080i for HD DVD problem with my component cables. And before the update I did try the MS VGA cable with the VGA-->DVI conversion cable and the highest resolution I could get to work was the 1320 X 768. So I returned both of the cables the next day and went back to component.
Can anyone tell me if the update fixed this and I could be getting 1080p for games, dashboard, HD-DVD's, and upscaled SD DVD's?
Should I go buy the cables again?
AirPlus 12-08-06, 06:37 PM Hello Forum,
I have a problem too getting the xbox to display 1080i on my screen. I have a Sharp 15,4" display connected through a winmate controller unit.
The native resolution of the screen is 1920x1200. I am able to force the 1080 resolution through the graphics adapter in my PC, but that is not what I want. I would rather be able to connect the xbox. All smaller resolutions are possible, but once switching to 1080 the xbox jumpes back to 600x400 or something. All the other resolutions work fine.
Does anyone knows if MS will support the 1200 resolution in the future? Otherwise I will bring the box back.
I also tried to use the holo3dII in the HTPC inputting a component signal with a ridiculous result. The picture was horrible. I reckon the holocard is not capable of high res inputs over yuv.
Thanks in advace.
AirPlus 12-08-06, 07:22 PM I just gave it al last shot before I was going to sleep.
Dont ask me how this miracle happend, but after switching the xbox to 1080 the displays OSD shows 1920x1080@59Hz. After runnig the displays auto setup the screen is right how it should be. HD trailers look awesome!
I am happy and will keep the box if this will work for a while.
It would have been a shame to return this piece of equipment after having played Gears Of War till the controllers were smoking. :)
I can´t wait till the HD-DVD reader hits the "old-europe" in decent numbers. At the moment they are sold out everywhere.
So long
ZippZopp 12-09-06, 04:37 AM I just picked up the Xbox360 with HD DVD addon. I'm using a Samsung 4695 LCD. I've got the xbox connected with the supplied component cables. In the setup options I set the xbox to 1080p and my TV informs me that it is in 1080p which is great. The HD DVD though, runs at 1080i. Shouldn't that be in 1080p as well? I had read some people saying that to get 1080p you need the VGA hook up, but others were saying that 1080p works over the component cables for the HD DVD. did i do something wrong? is there another setting or something?
cheers
AirPlus 12-09-06, 08:39 AM Hmm
I tried it again today and get the same error. I am starting to realize that I have an MS product standing in front of me.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Hodnick 12-09-06, 03:18 PM Well I bought the VGA cable hoping to get 1080p on my 60" XBR2... needless to say I also get the side bars and a message that says it doesn't support this signal? WTF MS get a fix out for this ready...
ZippZopp 12-09-06, 05:01 PM does the 360 upconvert standard DVDs by itself or with the HD DVD addon?
i popped a DVD into both drives and my TV tells me it is coming in at 480p.
does the 360 upconvert standard DVDs by itself or with the HD DVD addon?

I have the exact same question. Specifically I have an XBR2. Do I need a VGA cable to have DVDs upconverted? or will i have the same problem where the vga image doesn't fill the whole screen?
ZippZopp 12-10-06, 04:45 AM i haven't tested the upconvert via VGA cable. I just picked the cable up tonight and tried it out. It seems that the colors aren't as vibrant. I have the Samsung 4695 LCD and I turned on game mode and that helps the color a bit, but I still don't think its as sharp or vibrant as the component cables. honestly, to my eye, I can't really tell the difference in the Kong HD DVD playing in 1080i over component and 1080p over VGA.
AirPlus 12-10-06, 06:24 AM I am thinking of buying this:
Has anyone experience with that cable so far?
That is the first xbox to DIV cable I found, obviously still analog, but might solve my problem. If anyone knows another european supplier, please respond. I do not want to buy in the US - customs -

DVI-I accepts both analog and digital signal. It seems the cable is basically a 360 VGA cable with a DVI-I rather than a VGA connector. That means the signal is still analog. If your display has a DVI-I connector you could use the standard VGA cable plus a VGA to DVI-I connector to achieve the same result.
Most displays have DVI-D and HDMI. If you want to pass a digital signal to the display you need to have a proper analog/digital converter or a high end AV receiver. Transcoding anolog to digital may result in a loss of picture quality.
Even if you can get the cable to work. I think the best you can get out of the cable is 1080p for games and 480p for DVD. Since digital connection like DVI-D and HDMI uses HDCP scheme which is not present in the VGA signal. With the latest xbox live update the 360 can now output 1080p for games and 480p for regular DVD using component. With VGA you can ouput 1080 for both games and DVD.
AirPlus 12-10-06, 03:01 PM Ok. Thank you frist. One Question: Do you think there will be a loss in PQ when using a VGA cable with a VGA to DVI connector. I remember that you lose some PQ over every connector or adapter etc.
I think I read something like that.

If you are using VGA to DVI-I there should be no PQ degradation. Because DVI-I accepts analog signal, the 360 is still sending analog signal to a port which accepts both analog and digital signal.
If you are talking about VGA to DVI-D, the there is probably going to be some loss of signal. The question is whether you will be able to notice the loss. Some VGA to DVI converter only accepts upto 1280x1024 vga resolution, Startech is reported to accept upto 1600x1200; Gefen (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1209) supposedly accept upto 1920x1200.
You may want to verify which DVI input you have on your display. (http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html)
When running my XBox 360 at 1080p over component to my 42" Aquos, the image is a little smaller than the full screen width, and not quite centered. However, 1080i is perfect. I wonder if it's the XBox or the Aquos that has the issue.

Thank you great input much appreciated. I wrote to the manufacturer of the controller now to find out what the DVI-IN is able to handle.
For the conversion I thought of something like this:

Were you trying to do component-in component-out on the 4306 ? Or component-in HDMI out ? You may have to disable the conversion feature on the receiver and just use it to pass the signal to the display. Have you tried directly connecting your 360 to the displays?
AirPlus 12-13-06, 08:46 PM Yes I did. It is not, that the xbox won´t work, its just that I can use the max. resolution of 1280X1024 on displays that can handle 1920X1200 form PCs. (connected xbox via VGA cable)
On the receiver I went Component in and HDMI out. But I used a HDMI to DVI conversion cable. Maybe that is the problem.
By the way my next choice would have been PS3 to play HD Videos, but there a rumors now that Sony will delay their console till September in Europe. They are really sc***ing it up big time for their new format over here.

1920x1200. It must be a 24" LCD panel. What brand is it ?
Correct me if I am wrong but I do not believe the Denon 4306 upscales the resolution to anything higher than 480p. It may only upconvert 480p component signal to 480p HDMI signal. And the 360 will not output anything higher than 480p for SD DVD if output is component.

Thanks for your reply. The tft is a Sharp 15,4". Panel number LQ154M1LW12. I want to use it in a DIY Projector.
I will look in manual of the receiver tomorrow. I tried every option by the way.

How are you connecting the PC to the DIY panel ? VGA or DVI ? It may also be the Winmate controller unit which limits the resolution to 1280x1024 since 360 is not ouput a standard VGA signal. You can try updatign the firmware on the winmate controller and see if that help. I assume your 360 has the latest update from XBL.
wirebook 12-15-06, 09:45 AM I'm confused.
I have the XBR3, but when I select 1920x1080 via VGA, the TV says it's an invalid signal and the picture looks like it's squished to about the middle third of the TV.
Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just misunderstanding what the update patch should have fixed?

get the latest system update for the xbox 360 and then it should be ok. at least that is what some say, that it fixed the XBR problem.... i had the same crap you have, until i returned my crapBox 360
slapshot1848 12-16-06, 12:22 PM has anyones 360's crapped out on them after they did the 1080p update. Mine was fine until I updated it. I do not have a modded xbox, it was made this past january and worked fine for about a week after I updated it. Then all of a sudden it started freezing. I took the hard drive off, and it still froze. 1080p was nice, but not if it makes the 360 brick out.
1080p works nicely on VGA with the v2500. So far not a single issue.Hey yuzna.... come around and visit the v2500 thread. I agree. The 360's 1080p VGA works incredibly well with the sony v2500. Before the latest 11/30 update, the colors were a little bland, but that's been fixed. I just calibrated using Avia, and came up with: Mode = Text, Brightness = 28 to 32, Picture = 98, Temp = Warm2. This almost exactly calibrates even for color saturation using blue filter lenses. Mode = Video will oversaturate, but it's an option for when a vivid setting is desired. I watched the hd-dvd Aeon Flux from the 360 over 1080p VGA, and it was about the best pq I've ever seen. Amazing.

The only way to connect your xbox at that resolution to XBR3 or XBR2 is through the VGA cable to input 9 (labeled PC on your TV). After you do this go to display setting on your xbox dashboard and switch the resolution to 1080. I did this last night and was horrified how bad it looked on my XBR2. Component worked a lot better at 1080i and if I am playing a fast pace game like Gears of War I switch the xbox manually to 720p. I am going to be returning the VGA cable today with dissapointment.
1080p VGA looks amazing on the sony v2500. I know xbr2/3's had a problem with the 1080p fall update, but I thought that was fixed with the latest 11/30 update. Have you tried that?

You were horrified with the VGA image (just like I was at first) because you have to adjust the picture settings.
Try this out while in VGA mode w/ 1920x1080 enabled on your XBOX360:
Display Mode: Video
Backlight: 3
Picture: 95
Brightness: 38 (this is the key setting so the image doesn't look washed out)
Color Temp.: Warm 1
Hodnick 12-17-06, 03:18 AM has anyone gotten this to work with the SXRD XBR2 60 or 70 inch? It seems the "XBR" fix is mostly for the LCD crowd of sony =(

I'll try it again, but I did mess with the settings and still everything (especially the dashboard) looked very blurry and washed out. I even tried the text mode. I'll give it another shot and give you an update.
DanMacMan 12-17-06, 09:50 PM I just stumbled upon this thread...
My 4095 accepts and displays 1080p over Component and VGA. *However* the VGA signal is incompatible with my tv. The picture is completely washed out and looks terrible. I have gone back to component because of it. I have not installed the latest 1080p dashboard update yet because I dont have a broadband connection and I havent had a chance to go to my brother's place to install it. But I havent read anywhere that this update would fix it anyway...
WilliamG 12-19-06, 10:15 AM I have the Samsung LN-S4695 and indeed, the VGA 1080p on the 360 is very washed out. I went back to component.
hdmonger 12-20-06, 12:03 AM Pioneer 4340hd plasma tried with vga. Set at the tv's native resolution of 1024x768. I'm sure I can calibrate the colors to minimize the washed out feel, but what's up with all the screen tearing?? I've never seen screen tearing during an hd-dvd movie via component, but it's quite noticeable thru vga. Tv says it's running at 720p & 60hz. I'll probably return the cables tomorrow.
I've got a Sony KDS-50A2000 and the manual says it only accepts 1080p over HDMI. Since the 360 has no HDMI out am I just gonna have to settle for 1080i? Also, would 1080p make a noticeable difference or does my TV deinterlace the 1080i signal well enough?
HappyFunBoater 12-20-06, 06:38 PM A basic question about 1080i scaling to 1080p (if that's the right term), and yeah, there are more appropriate forums for this question, but DMB14's post made me realize I don't know how this works:
Does the TV take the two 1080i fields and combine them to make one 1080p frame and then display the result? I assume so.
But once it does that, does it update the previous 1080p frame with one 1080i field, display the result, update with the next 1080i field, display, etc.? Or does it only update in field pairs?
Know what I mean?
DanMacMan 12-21-06, 11:56 AM So I emailed Samsung about the 360 VGA issue and this is what I got in response... its pretty sad when the consumer knows more about stuff than the manufacturers, but I am finding this more and more the case.
Thank You for contacting us.
I'm not sure why you are using the VGA input for XBOX360, the best quality for this system is going to be with component cables. There are no updates available for this television at this time.
If there is anything else you would like assistance with, please feel free to write us any time. Additionally, if you would like live technical support, you can also contact us at 1-800-SAMSUNG (1-800-726-7864).
Yeah, here is something additional - get a competent staff and release a firmware update!
adolchristin 12-21-06, 02:27 PM has anyone gotten this to work with the SXRD XBR2 60 or 70 inch? It seems the "XBR" fix is mostly for the LCD crowd of sony =(
If you bother to read the manual for this and the A2000 models (which are scaled down versions of these sets) you'll see that 1080P is ONLY supported over HDMI for these models.
But why worry? The scaler in your XBR2 is _awesome_ and will do a great job of turning 1080i from your Xbox360 to 1080P.

Yeah there's a bunch of us who are in the same boat (I've got the same set as you) until Microsoft decides to authorize an HDMI cable. I'm curious if it was a strategic move by Sony to not support 1080p over component since the PS3 supports HDMI out of the box.
I've been running at 1080i over component and I think it looks great. Others have tried 720p and say it looks better. Theoretically 720p has greater resolution than 1080i per frame. I think either way you would be hard pressed to find much of a difference. I may switch to 720p over the next week to see if I have any preferences.

If you really bother to read the manuals you'll see that the PC Input Signal Reference Charts are different between the two models. The A2000 maxes out at 1360x768; the XBR2 goes up to 1920x1080.
TV Casualty 12-22-06, 01:49 PM I'm hoping the quickly upcoming Sharp D92 series will answer my prayers (affordable, quality set that accepts VGA and has 1:1 pixel mapping). It has a DVI-I port that can do 1080p, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Color Temp.: Warm 1After the 11/30 Xbox Live update, colors are much more saturated. With the V2500, the Avia DVD (on either the DVD or HD-DVD drive) shows an almost exact calibration for Color and Hue with PC Mode = Text. And with Brightness = 28 to 32 and Picture = 96 to 98. Setting Modde = Video oversaturates, but that's an individual choice if preferred. Anyway there's no wash out at all, at least on the V2500's (and I suspect the XBR2/3's) with either Text or Video mode with the latest update. PQ is gorgeous.
I'm fairly new to the website and to hometheatre units in general. Just thought I'd post this as its a bit confusing to me. Using the component cables that came with the 360 and setting the console to 1080p, the set seems to accept the HD signal. Pressing info on the remote control that came with the tv, confirms it is running at 1080p 60 refresh rate with game mode on. Is the TV giving a false reading or is it actually running at 1080p? In terms of PQ, i could not tell any difference whatsoever between 1080p and 1080i. Anyways, while i dont have very much experience, anyone considering the sammy 96d should be very happy with the set.
I just wanted to ask if anyone with a Sony XBR3 (not XBR2) has verified 1080p compatibility over VGA.
THANKS!!!
:D
is anyone from MS monitoring this thread?
if so the Gateway FPD2485W 24" fails to display 1920x1080p over component (it shows a 4x3 blurry display and often won't sync) but does display 1080p over VGA (according to other sites).
the montor supports 1080p over component.

Whenever you sign in online to xbox live it should automatically start downloading the updates once you click ok. If you want to check just go to the system tabs, then the option for display should say 1080p.
I hope MS new's years resolution is to release a HDMI cable...

(I have ordered a KDL-46XBR2 and should arrive in a few dayz)
1. With new 11/30 update from MS, Xbox 360 -> VGA -> XBR2 => 1080p works?
2. With new 11/30 update from MS, Xbox 360 -> Component -> XBR2 => 1080p works?
(I'm pretty all noob to this... component means the default cables I got in the box with my 360 which has the SD<->HD switch in the middle, right?)
If not supported, would the below method work?
3. Xbox360 -> Component -> Receiver with HDMI Video Upconversion -> connect to XBR2 through HDMI => 1080p works?
Thanks.

No, you cannot get 1080p movies with component that is why they are using hdmi.
Everyone else:
1-xbr2 and xbr3 LCD models work in 1080p with the vga cable
2-xbr2 and xbr3 LCD DOES NOT support 1080p over component and never will
3-Your 360 will automatically update when it detects an internet connection (you do not get free games, you get free updates to play older games).
4-rear projection xbr2 owners are still screwed as of now since the vga cable does not work on them.
5-the vga signal is washed out and will have to be tweaked to look decent. component colors are more saturated but you can get a decent picture out of vga connection as well.

257Tony 12-30-06, 10:32 PM Hey guys just joined today. I searched and read on here a ton before buying my TV and you guys helped me pick the right one even though I never asked (I know how to read) I got the Samsung 6187w and hooked it up to the 360 with the VGA adn ran the audio through my Onkyo HT-S790 and it is AMAZING! I thought it looked good on my 55" Mits through component, but this is just something else. It only needed minor tweaking and some screen size adjustment to get it just right. It is simply amazing, so anybody looking for a good DLP for gaming/movies, look no further than the Samsung. Thanks.....

The XBR2/3 does not support 1080p over component. They state that in the manual... but they have 1920x1080 as a supported resolution for VGA. 1920x1080 has been done via PC using the VGA port, so to me it looks like something slightly out of range with the 360... it does /display/ something, but it isn't the whole screen.
The Sony 52xbr3 manual on their website says the component inputs support 1080p. My set is being delivered the 6th, so I will know for sure then.

PRETTY E 01-03-07, 01:39 AM I just hooked up my Sony 46" XBR to my 360 via the VGA cables. When I select 1920x1080 for my screen resolution, the sides of the screen become black and cut off part of the image, and my tv says "Unsupported signal. Adjust your PC output"
My 360 has the latest dashboard update, so I don't understand why I'm having this problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
phantomhitman 01-03-07, 02:57 PM i know you from somewhere ;)
You should not be having these problems at all. Many xbr3 owners are using 1080p via vga fine and you are the first one I have heard of having this issue. It seems you are missing an update. I wonder if there is a way to delete the updates and redownload them...

No, that won't work at any resolution. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. DVI can be either, but you'll need a piece of hardware that converts from analog to digital.

washed out colors is fixed with dashboard updated and would be either user error (setup) or a deficiency of your samsung. 1080p looks fantastic here.

That's not technically a question, but yes, some TVs expect PC levels (0-255) in their VGA input, and the 360 sends video levels (16-235). The result is that a video black (RGB 16,16,16) looks gray, and white (235,235,235) looks grayer too. Try to see if your TV has an option to accept video levels on the VGA input, if not, then calibration can lessen this effect, however, your best bet is to use Component input. It is not known whether MS will try compensate for this problem, or if they do, when that will happen.
phantomhitman 01-09-07, 08:19 AM Can someone with a xbox 360, sony xbr2, and a vga cable please download the new dashboard update to make sure 1080p still works after they install it? I am afraid to update my console now that everything works fine.
What resolution is the best to select in the xbox 360 dashboard if my DLP supports 1080P? Since the games are rendered at 720p, I'm unsure if it's better to select 720p or 1080i/p.
Thanks.

it's usually best to output the 360 to the native resolution of your display. if your DLP is 720p then output 360 720p.
I just hooked up my Sony 46" XBR to my 360 via the VGA cables.
Pretty E,
I'm running that setting here with no issues. Is it an MS Cable or other brand? Perhaps just a bad cable connection?

Phantomhitman,
I saw an update come down when I fired up the XBOX 360 (VGA on XBR2) and all still is working fine).

phantomhitman 01-10-07, 12:21 PM thanks for the info
uzombie 01-10-07, 04:48 PM i know you from somewhere ;)
You should not be having these problems at all. Many xbr3 owners are using 1080p via vga fine and you are the first one I have heard of having this issue. It seems you are missing an update. I wonder if there is a way to delete the updates and redownload them...
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/09/xbox-360-hdd-cache-clear-code-discovered/
Y on the Hard Drive, then x x LB(left bumper) RB(right bumper) x x
It removes all the updates (for games...).
uzombie 01-10-07, 04:50 PM Oh, after I did the update...about an hour or more playing...I paused the game (GoW). Returned 90 minutes later (set still on) and played some more (ARRGH, I have 28 of 30 tags..where did I miss them???) and I notice the red has shifted on my new sammy dlp!!!
I have to try another source but I hope it's not the tv...
hipcheck41 01-10-07, 09:23 PM I have a 40XBR3
I want to have my 360 hooked up the best way for playing games.
I had the the component cables hooked to the tv and the audio cables hooked to my Denon 2307 for sound.
From what I gather I should not be hooking up the component cables but the VGA cables for 1080P
How should I connect the 360, do I have connect it directly to the TV or can I hook it up through the Denon so I can have surround sound. If you can be specific as I am very new to this.
Thank you very much

OK you should be fine as the 360 outputs 1080p over component for games only. If you wanted the HD-DVD add on or to upscale your DVDs you would need the VGA Cable. The cable has an optical output connection which you can hook up a optical cable from the cable to your reciever and you will get your surround sound.
Redoryx 01-11-07, 01:34 PM I was just infosnacking for some inf on the HDMI input on the 360 and found this. I might be worth it to sign up
http://www.**************.com/360hdmi/
What I did find is that the timings the 360 is using over VGA don't actually conform to any known standard. Not VESA, and not any others that I can dig up. So while there is still investigation to do, the problem does appear to be out-of-spec timings (other than resolution and vertical frequency) that panels are not liking, and either not being able to support DDC, or choosing to not implement the software end of it.
Edit: As an aside, it could also be a bug somewhere, even if it supports DDC, which creates incorrect timings. These timings, which don't conform to a standard, will not work on panels that are more strict regarding the standards than others.I doubt the xbox supports DDC, at least for 1080p, but rather just sends a fixed signal (one size fits all). I believe it's sending a VESA (or close to the VESA recommended) Reduced Blanking timing. So, that would make it a standard signal.
Evidence: The Sony V2500's _don't support_ 1080p VGA, yet they work very well with the Xbox 360's 1080p VGA. And, it's been discovered that they'll support 1080p VGA from a PC _only_ with Reduced Blanking timing set either through PowerStrip or by choosing CVT-Reduced Blanking from a graphics card that allows such a choice.
Reduced Blanking allows a slower clock rate by not wasting bandwidth with delays for a CRT's electron gun to do a horizontal and vertical retrace -- which lcd's and plasma's don't need. There may be a reason MS needs to use a slower clock rate (maybe they're pushing the envelope getting 1080p VGA at all).
Anyway, the Evidence I posted is accurate; the inference is my educated guess. I'm not a VGA timings expert, so guru's please correct or add to this. But I'm fairly certain the Xbox is at least using Reduced Blanking. It'd be very interesting if anyone knows the exact timings.
I just reciently bought this set and I can't keep my eyes off of it...
and 1080p via VGA does infact work on the V2500 but it will say that the signal is not suported... Enjoy the set...1080p VGA also calibrates, as is, with the V2500 when tested with calibration dvd's for Color and Hue when Mode is set to TEXT. Gray scale calibrates with Brightness at 28 to 32, and Picture at 96 - 98, Temp to Warm2. Backlighting can be set as desired. Also, set Phase, Pitch and the Centering's to 0 (auto adjust may not work properly w/ the 360's vga timings). With the above settings, 1080p VGA not only looks gorgeous w/ the V2500, but it's properly calibrated. Color and Hue can't be adjusted, but there's no need. Remember: set Mode to Text (not Video).
I'm about to purchase the Sony KDL-40V2500 TV. I plan on using it with my Xbox 360 (VGA connection 1080p), a Directv HR 20 (HDMI) and a PC with Nvidia Geforce 7900 GT/GTO Video card (HDMI with a DVI to HDMI cable). I will also buy the HD DVD Player for the 360. From what I've read I can get 1080p from all these connections with the Sony V2500.
I want to be happy with my expensive TV purchase. So...Is Everyone who owns this TV happy with it? LOL
HairyNo. That's _never_ the case. On any owners thread, there are those who'll make you want to scream. ;) There'll be people who have their sets in torch mode or play crappy dvd source and blame the set for having motion blur and so on. My favorite, for the V2500, was someone who insisted their set had "weird colors" and then left in a huff to buy another model since no one answered them. ;)
But, yes, I'm delighted w/ the V2500... it's one of the best products I've ever purchased... pq is gorgeous, 1080p hdmi is pixel perfect, and 1080p vga a nice bonus. It's one of those rare occassions where my appreciation for a product has grown. The v2500 thread is of course the place for this... sorry for the off topic.
5-the vga signal is washed out and will have to be tweaked to look decent. component colors are more saturated but you can get a decent picture out of vga connection as well.VGA colors _are not_ washed out with the 11/30 update, not for the V2500, and I suspect, not for the XBR2/3's either. That is, unless calibrated Color and Hue are being defined as washed-out with torched oversaturation as desirable.
Just to confirm that the 52xbr3 allows 1080p via the component inputs here are some pics:
(You'll have to check Sony's site to verify that video 6 is a component input if you don't trust me)

OgOgilby 01-14-07, 12:30 PM So I take it that there is still no way to get 1080p on the 60-70" Sony XBR2's. Any rumors about an XBOX 360 HDMI cable?
maximuslcd 01-15-07, 02:03 PM Just FYI I have the sharp aquos 1080p LCD and have had no problems connecting 1080p via componant cables, it works great and looks even better.
OnlookerDelay 01-19-07, 03:11 PM Any rumors about an XBOX 360 HDMI cable?
This is probably the strongest suggestion I've seen that an HDMI cable may be on the way for the XBox 360:
Microsoft HDMI A/V cable at Dimension Plus (http://www.dimensionplus.nl/link.asp?pid=780112)
This is a Dutch webmerchant, btw. The cable is advertised for availability on February 23rd. I tried to place an international order for it, but they only ship to 5 European nations. I questioned them about the legitimacy of this product and they insist that it's for real (they've been advertising it for almost 2 months now).
The price is 49.99 euros, which equates to roughtly $66. I don't think they could do a transcoder for that price. I'm not sure what this will wind up being... I hope it's not another Pelican Products, HDMI cable fiaso... where they call a component cable an HDMI cable (Pelican has since changed the name on the product after much criticism).
How does a Dutch merchant get the scoop on something like this so far in advance of everyone else? Maybe they aren't bound by the same non-disclosure terms as others, or maybe they've simply got some bad information. All I know is they have steadfastly stood by this listing since it first hit their page in November... I've been staying on them about it, and they've done a reasonably good job of communicating with me in English, after my feeble "Freetranslationsonline.com" efforts left much to be desired.
zero_zep 01-21-07, 02:18 AM Is there any real offical way to know on what TV's the vga does or does not look washed out on? I have a dvi but I have an adapter that the vga can plug into. I bought the vga for 1080p a while back but took it back because I thought it did look pretty bad. But now I bout a new 57 1080p mit. And I would love to get 1080p from my hd-dvd movies. I guess the best way would be to buy the cable and take it back if it doesnt work but before I do that I like to know if there is anyway to know ahead of time.
thanks
titus pullo 01-21-07, 08:14 PM i have a 65732 mits, you can do 1080p with the dvi adapter but it's looks washed out pretty bad picture . the 360 sends a video signal the mits wants a pc signal from the dvi. an update from ms would fix this but nothing has come yet. stick with the component! stay away from the vga until there's some sort of fix or wait for a hdmi cable or new 360. not what you want to hear i know but i've been going around and around with this for a few months now..
edit: i'm asking around the 732 boards to make sure too

Hey Nickff & anyone else that knows please help before I go crazy here...
Just a few questions about 1080p on the Sony LCD's - KDL46XBR3 or KDL46XBR2. I assume or hope the 46" Sony sets would react the same as the - KDL-52XBR3.
I have an Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD add on and also a PS3 as well.
With the X360 I would like to be able to watch HD-DVD movies in 1080p and up-convert my old DVD's as well using the X360 HD-DVD add-on. Is this possible with component video on the above Sony LCD's or only with VGA? If I understand correct and you can only up-convert old DVD with VGA how is the picture on these sets with VGA compared to Component HD video? What will the X360 games run at since they are for the most part 720p at this time?
A Sony Rep told me to get a HDTV Rear Projection screen from them due to the 8ms response and 7000:1 contrast of the KDL46XBR2 & XBR3 series. The only Sony set that compares to me in person is KDS-R60XBR2 60" which might be a bit big for my room. This set has 2.5ms and 10000:1 contrast which Sony said is so much better for gaming.
Right now I have a Sony 34" FD Trinitron WEGA XBR the set looks and work great with the X360 however I can't up-convert DVD's and I am having some other issues with my PS3. At the same time I am looking to get a bigger set that is a bit smaller in bulk than the CRT at 39 1/8" x 25 3/4" x 23 3/4" and around 200lbs.
My PS3 is hooked up HDMI on my TV & will Play games great 720p but if I want to watch a Blue-ray movie I have to turn on the 1080i output because the Blue-ray Movie will down convert to 480p and not run 720p. If I leave the 1080i output on then the games will up to 1080i and not run as smooth.
Can anyone suggest another TV that is 46"-50" that will work for me with the X360 and PS3. Sorry for the lengthy post everyone...
leftkidney 01-28-07, 08:42 AM so is there a list somewhere with all the current TV and HD Monitors out there which support 1080p over VGA and/or Component?
like a list all in one place I here all different problems with different people with the same TV so it would be great if someone with some time could go through all this stuff and make a list
or is there one?
scherer326 01-31-07, 07:43 AM sony xbr2/3 supports 1080p via VGA
for copyright issues you can only get 1080p for movies via VGA or HDMI. The best for component with movies is 1080i.
But on some tvs component does output 1080p for games.

The LCOS (rear projection) version of the XBR2 technically supports 1080p via VGA, but it's far from acceptable. It only fills up ~80% of the screen. YMMV with the LCD version of the XBR2.
i have a sammy lns4695D and I can get 1080p signal on both VGA and component. I prefer using the component over vga at this time cuz VGA is a bit washed out....the only disadvantage is i cannot upconvert my sd-dvds thru component.
I bought the kdl52xbr2 (lcd not RP, should arrive soon), own a 360 and want the hd dvd attachment, but am comfused on compatability issues, please help.
1. I hear there is a problem with the 52xbr2 accepting 360 1080p. Do I need to update the 360 for a patch? If yes, does the patch allow 1080p over component and vga (I've heard only vga works)?
2. The hd dvd attachment only outputs 1080p in vga, does it share the same vga output port as the 360? My concern is that the xbr2 only has one vga input and I may have two xbox vga output--one for the game counsel and one for the hd dvd attachment. This one should be simple to answer :)
Thanks!! :)

Absolutely, I have that exact TV and it works flawlessly through VGA. Just don't buy a cheap cable and you are good to go!

The xbr2/3 should have not problems wiht ps3 even with different hdmi versions. You are right to be concerned about 360 compatability issues, I know I am. I'll have my 52xbr2 in the next week or so and will see how it performs with 360 1080p. I updated the 360 last night and hopefully the patch will allow vga 1080p, I don't think it allow component 1080p. I'll post and let you know how the setup works.
poohead 02-03-07, 09:21 PM Noob question... sorry, but can someone confirm if the KDL-46XBR2 the same model as the KDL46X2000? I live in Australia and the Sony aus website doesn't mention any xbr models, so I'm confused. Have been searching and reading through these pages for days, and have had most of my questions answered... so thanks!
Am just trying to work out if the KDL46X2000 will display xbox360 at 1080p with the vga cable. If the KDL-46XBR2 IS the same model as the KDL46X2000 then I understand that it will do this.
VarianSyn 02-04-07, 12:42 AM I haven't seen it anywhere, but does anyone have the Samsung HL-S5087 working in 1080p over VGA with the 360 and HD-DVD addon ? Also any problems with upconverting dvd's to 1080p over VGA with these sets ?
hrokling 02-04-07, 07:23 AM I've previously been running 1080p component to my 1080p projector, and games (and HD DVD movies on 1080i) look great in this setup.
To get DVDs upscaled I just purchased the HD VGA-cable, but encountered a problem: Sending out 1920x1080 over the VGA cable leads to no signal being picked up by my projector. 1280x720 and 1366x768 works well for instance. And yes, my projector supports 1920x1080 at both 50 and 60 (and even 24). So, I'm at a loss here really.
I know there was something about the videosignal from the 360 being different from a PC VGA signal, but I haven't looked into that yet. Any help offered is much appreciated, since getting this resolution to work was the sole reason for getting the cable.
