I plan on using Component Baluns to send my HDTV signal from the my VIP 622 to an LCD in another room in the house. I will get the audio over using the Balun as well. The Balun takes a digital input. My LCD does not have a Digital input. How can I convert it to analog cheaply.

The Intelix AVO-V3AD is designed transmit component video and digital audio. However, the digital audio channel can also send mono analog audio as well. It does not have the full frequency response that the regular Intelix analog audio baluns have such as the AVO-A2 or AVO-A4(20Hz to 20KHz). The 3dB down point is about 100Hz.

Analog mono audio will pass through the digital audio channel of the AVO-V3AD or AVO-V3AD-WP with a frequency response of 100Hz to 20KHz.

The reason a balun can only send component video and digital audio (or mono audio) over a single Cat-5 is because there's not enough twisted pairs to send both channels of analog audio while maintaining a balanced line configuration.

If you have access to a second Cat-5, we have an active system that is not balun based that sends video and audio over Cat-5: It handles component video, digital audio, analog audio, and has an IR pathway for control. That's over 2 Cat-5s. We designed our system around your particular need - the fact that most TVs don't have digital audio inputs.

The system is the 9870, if you want to take a look. However, if you're in a situation where only one Cat-5 is available, it looks like you're limited to converting to mono audio or going to an amplifier.

I think the OP is looking for a way to take a digital stream (coax or optical connection) and convert to a stereo audio connection. I'd love to see something like this as well. Anyone have any ideas?

but for digital to analog the only thing I ever found was

$75 surround sound receivers off of ebay...Digital In --> Line level audio out!!

Honestly though who even uses LCD audio any more? You have a nice screen but you suffer with the crappy sound (compared to any external audio setup).

Practically, what is the effect of this? Is that a noticeable degradation?

I have 3 midliand boxes that decode digital audio to stereo-downmixed

http://www.midiland.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=60&category=

This is the 4000 series, but I have a 2000 box and 2 3000 boxes...they work great.

I'm going to need to do the same thing, but it looks like MidiLand either lost their domain, or went out of business.

Anyone else recommend the smallest possible box to convert digital audio (coax) to analog audio..?

Thanks.

Well that's a pisser.....

I'd keep an eye on ebay for midiland gear as occasionally one will pop up for $30-50...

Otherwise, an inexpensive HT receiver with digital inputs will do the same thing.

...bump for the weekday folks, as this is the one piece I've not yet been able to pin down.

Big hugs for whoever knows of a product that can do this (short of receiver, and preferably as small as possible).

Thanks.

Here are three reasonably-priced boxes I've found:

Radio Design Labs (RDL) RU-SPC1 -- http://www.rdlnet.com/product.php?page=44 or http://www.markertek.com/Product.asp?baseItem=RU%2DSPC1&cat=INTERFACE&subcat=AUDINT&prodClass=RACKUPS&mfg=&search=0&off
Kramer 6410 -- http://www.kramerelectronics.com/indexes/item.asp?pic=28 or http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&Q=&is=REG&O=productlist&sku=329495
Creative DDTS-100 -- http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=136&product=9468

The Creative unit is the least-expensive (approx. $149), and the only one I have hands-on experience with. It seemed to work okay, and was pretty small...
