I have a question related to MP4 files. I use Nero Recode 2 currently, and it has a facility for creating chapters in the recoded output. However, the only app/device that seems to be able to use these chapters is the Nero player.

Is it possible to create chapters in an MP4 that are recognized by other apps and the Sigma based media players (like the Mediagate MG350HD)?

I've used a program called staxrip (http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip) to create mp4 files and it uses a chapter file in this format

CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000
CHAPTER01NAME=Chapter 1
CHAPTER02=00:04:23.233
CHAPTER02NAME=Chapter 2
CHAPTER03=00:10:17.233
CHAPTER03NAME=Chapter 3

I've had good luck using zoomplayer to play the mp4 file and jump from one chapter to another.

It really works good if I want to convert the bonus features from a DVD to mp4. I use dgindex (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dgindex.htm) to connect the vobs for the bonus features I want to convert and then edit a chapter file like this

CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000
CHAPTER01NAME=behind the scenes
CHAPTER02=00:04:23.233
CHAPTER02NAME=interview with cast
CHAPTER03=00:10:17.233
CHAPTER03NAME=trailers

I've also had good luck with using staxrip to have 2 audio tracks. One track is 5.1 AAC and the other track is director's commentary. Then I can use zoomplayer to switch between the audio tracks as I want.

Yeah, but can any media player actually use any of those chapter marks? Zoomplayer only works on your PC, right?

I rip DVD's to mp4 if I want to put it on my iPod. There is a program called Metadatahootanany that can read chapter marks from the DVD and import them to the MP4 metadata. I can use those marks on my Mac, but I don't know any media players that can. I can only hope that Apple TV will be able to do it, but I'm not holding my breath since the iPod still can't.
