AHDTVDiet 11-16-06, 11:59 PM I blame Halo. I blame them for apparently making it a requirement that every shooter have a A) driving section B) badguys who run straight at you and explode.
So with the good Halo brought us, it also brought us the bad. GoW just added the Halo required sections.
I am not sure if this is already answered but...
Has anyone compared picture quality between VGA and component cable with this game? I am pretty happy with my VGA.
I have a HP LC3700N LCD TV and I swapped between the two real quick and it should be noted that I was under the influence of beer when I did this quick comparison.
I really need to do a better comparison, but I've stuck with VGA for right now. My TV allows me to manually saturate the colors with the DVI input (I use a DVI adapter with the VGA cable) and I run at 1360x768.
Here's what I noticed:
So far, the main problem I have with VGA is that some of the darker scenes in the campaign mode don't have the deep blacks over VGA that they have on component. Something about the dark scenes with less contrast bothers me a bit on VGA. That said, I can actually see things in shadows rather than solid blacks and like I said, I've stuck with VGA for now.
One of the main reasons I like the VGA is that in daylight scenarios (note here that the multiplayer maps are mostly well lit) looks great through VGA. IMO my adjusted color over VGA looks a bit better than the default color on Component (I should note that I have not yet attempted to adjust the colors on my component input and that the DVI/VGA input allows for an entirely different type of color adjustments).
The great screen fit of 1360x768 and seemingly fewer jaggies over VGA are also a plus for me.
I figure I'll end up doing a more in depth comparison at some point, but every dang time I pick up the controller for GoW, I end up playing for hours and forgetting to check out these settings.
RobertR1 11-17-06, 03:44 AM This games is atleast 10x better via co-op with a friend on hardcore. Gonna try insane next! :D

i don't have any idea what you're bitching about. a) gears driving section is great and b) i don't recall anyone running at me and exploding in suicide bomber style in this game (unless you count grenade tagging online lol)

You missed the exploding wretches and the joke. Interesting.

There are a lot of creatures that run at you in the game and explode. They do a lot of damage to so you have to kill them at a distance and then let them explode out there. Weird how you missed all that.
cdub998 11-17-06, 10:39 AM Does anyone know if you can play with a guest on xbox live?
Yes but only in player matches not ranked. When in the online menu have the second player push y. It will pop up the accounts and let him select guest. There you go.
WilliamR 11-17-06, 11:35 AM Anyone know how to jump over something without first ducking behind it then hitting A again to jump over it. I hate when you want to go on the other side of something and you have to first hit a to duck down then a again to jump over.
wheelzntoys 11-17-06, 12:35 PM An example of this in GoW would be the level where you drive that tank thing. Throughout the whole game, all you need to do to keep the krill (sp?) away is ignite a propane tank, or stand under some kind of light such as a street lamp. However for some reason in this specific part you're required to shoot them with a "UV cannon" so bright and powerful that it requires all of the energy being generated by the tanks motors to power it. And even though the cannon is "on" producing light the whole time, they will only stay away if it's blasting right at them at full power. It's really annoying.
Plus that level seems so out of place in the game.
Prob Spoiler (Highlight below)
Ummmmmmm..........who said to need to use the UV light?

Just get a rhythm going with double tapping the A button and there is barely any pause at all before he jumps over the blockade.

those illuminated wretches explode only after they're dead. to me it's not the same as the flood, whose intention is to get close to you and explode. the wretches try to tear you apart and the exploding is an after effect of death.
anyway, the point is, parallels can be drawn to any game. i don't think, however, that halo was much of an influence in gears at all. if it was a joke then you're right...completely over my head

Try playing on Insane, those damn things won't stay away from you and it seems if you're anywhere within 10 feet of their explosion, you're dead.

The old geezer who's riding along with me shouting "YOU NEED TO USE THE UV CANNON!"
I don't really understand this comment. Your only other option would be to NOT use the UV cannon, which would just result in the Kryll killing you.
Hyabusha 11-17-06, 09:25 PM Played Multi-player for 8 hours straight last night. Wow, where does the time go? Love the game. :D

You can outrun them if you drive really good :)
mastahkaz 11-17-06, 10:31 PM You can outrun them if you drive really good :)
Does that apply on "insane" difficulty? That's the only time I ever had a problem beating the level, and also when I realized how dumb it was. :) If you can indeed outrun them on insane then I sure wish I would have known that a couple days ago when I was trying over and over and over again.
Previously when I played it on "hardcore" it was a breeze and I never had to try to outrun them.
RobertR1 11-17-06, 11:03 PM Haven't tried on insane but on hardcore I just out drove them. Make sure you navigate the best you can around obstacles and hit your apex's for maximum speed. If you're doing co-op have the other guy look behind. He said its' quite a sight to see all those krill chasing you :)
Probably try it on insane next week and let you know!
mastahkaz 11-17-06, 11:14 PM Now you've got me wanting to try it.
However weather or not you NEED to use the UV cannon, my original point still stands.
DaGamePimp 11-18-06, 03:13 AM I just drove straight through as well , they came close to taking me out a couple times but I kept it floored and made it on the first try (this was on casual) .

It struck me funny why there was no roof on it, like being in a convertable with those things at night makes sense.
Can anyone imagine replacing the characters we have seen with elements from Halo?
Obviously the real question is whether MS and Bungie have gone to the level of GOW, or surpassed it.
AHDTVDiet 11-18-06, 09:38 AM Playing on insane got all the way to RAAM and he is kicking my azz in ways he never did in Casual or Hardcore mode. I am trying my bow and sniper method but he moves faster and is on top of me before I know it. I try to relocate but am cutdown by him, the Kryll or the freaking reavers (who I always ignored before). I tried the blind fire machine gun too but he gets to the side of the barrier and smokes me, I cant go on either side to stay alive.
Any tips? Anyone here beat him on insane to give me some hope?

Seriously try online co op. Your AI buddy may be good but co op makes it a lot easier.

This is where I'm at as well. Was playing till about 4:00am last night then finally quit.
What was working for a little while was staying behind the first barricade and blind firing over it when he gets close. Then as he approaches your side, hope over and do the same. However, he kept going in a spot on the side of the damn thing that allowed him to hit me on either side.
He wasn't this smart on other difficulties.
Anyone got any tips for taking down the glowing wretches? Managed to snag a few but their numbers were overwhelming. Pls use spoiler tag if necessary in reply, thanks.
AHDTVDiet 11-18-06, 04:19 PM If you mean in that cart room area.
I used two gernades on each side of the cart and retreated into the room. When a few came in after me I made a dash out. The entire time shooting them and rolling away.
Maybe I just suck, but I find single-player, "hardcore"mode fairly challenging, in at least us much as there is no way I could get it done in 8 - 10 hours, like I hear some people say. Not on my first time through anyway. I think I'll clock in at about twice that.
The problem is, this game is centered around co-op campaigns, which is why they have check points and no ability to save. Without someone there to revive you, it really sucks to get near the end of a scene, only to die and have to start all over again. If you have to try 5 or 6 strategies to get past a scene, it really makes a difference whether you have to fight the easy first 10 minutes every time just to get to the hard part where you die. The ability to save your game as you go along would speed this game up a lot... although reviving via co-op may be just as good or better.
I hope to get done with sp tonight and then I'll try some online play.
AHDTVDiet, thanks for the tip.
speaking of cut scenes, i would like to have had the ability to skip through scripted moments when i'm restarting a section after dying for the 10th time
I believe if you hit the "X" button when those scenes first start playing, it stops them and goes right to the action. If not "X", it was one of the others.
FiveMillionWays 11-19-06, 02:00 AM LOL you think you suck I can't beat RAAM on casual. LMAO!

All of people exaggerate the time it took them to finish. I can shamlessly say that even on co-op, Harcore, took about 13-14hours. This is including deaths, cut scenes, etc.
Single player would take much longer on hardcore. It's not easy by any means.
Arutha_conDoin 11-19-06, 02:25 AM I think I have put about 3-4 hours or so into the game and I am only on the Factory/Mine level and I'm playing on Casual! I think I am getting my moneys worth out of the game. The Warehouse has some great sound effects I think. There have been a few times were the background noises sure do make me jump.
Absolutely awesome game, beat it last night on casual, now I'll go through again on hardcore.
I've read all 18 pages of this thread to see if anyone has reported any serious glitches with single player and noticed a number of people run into a sound problem. I ran into this as well, the entire surround field collapsed making everything sound muddy. I also had a checkpoint get lost on Act 5 just before the Raan fight so I had to repeat a small skirmish with some wretches. This only happened the once.
The biggest and most disturbing thing I encountered was on Act 3 while fighting the Corpser, as you push it back the level moves with you so you can't backtrack beyond a certain point. I had to run back to get more ammo and as the level pushed forward it ripped me right out of the game so to speak. I ended up floating in the air (higher than the wretches could reach), unable to move forward to catch up with the action but was able to move out over the liquid and back quite a ways. There was nothing I could do to get thrown back into the game. The wretches would all come running back to where I was but couldn't touch me. I continued to kill them off until I ran out of ammo. At that point I had to exit the game and come back in. Luckily the last checkpoint was literally right before the fight so it's not like I lost progress but if that checkpoint was not there I would have been pissed. Has anyone encountered similarly weird stuff?
Thanks,
Rod

I've gotten frozen (just once) in MP after chainsawing somebody. Only input that registered was spinning around in place until I was shot to pieces.

count me in, i got stuck too.
AHDTVDiet 11-19-06, 05:40 PM I never got stuck but I did kill a guy who my other guy just started chainsawing. After he was dead there was still blood spewing from my guys chainsaw and it was still going for a good minute or so afterward.
mastahkaz 11-19-06, 07:15 PM I've had the game freeze on me a couple times. Also, sometimes when playing co-op, both of us die but nothing happens and I have to manually reload the last checkpoint.
One weird thing that happened was the game froze up and my control wouldn't stop vibrating. At the exact same time this happened my laptop rebooted itself. My laptop is sharing files to the 360, I'm not sure if the incidents were related or not though.
DaGamePimp 11-19-06, 07:42 PM Not a single freeze or glitch here after going through the whole game on casual and back to the first berserker on hardcore (all single player) .

cdub998 11-19-06, 08:21 PM I had a glitch in multiplayer. In the map with the helicopter I was in the building where the hammer of dawn is. I grabbed the hammer and took cover on the cement on one side because the other team was above me. once I took cover I was pushed into this nothingness of green. I couldnt do anything and no one could find me. The match had to end up in a draw.

same thing happened to me on the rooftop level. it looked like i fell down a shaft or something. complete black screen except that i could see myself. everyone else playing said i just disappeared. i could run around in the nothingness but couldn't get out or see anyone else. match ended in a draw...

Same thing here, same location, but I fell through the floor. I could see the other team running around above me but unfortunately my bullets couldn't hit them.
ProjectEF 11-20-06, 10:03 AM I just spent the day just walking around the levels..and good gravy! They payed attention to every last thing that can be seen. I even looked at a locust that I just blew up, and his insides had definition (seperate organs moved around when he was kicked). Halo 3 and every other game that follows this type of quality is going to be rediculous. Oh...and that Berserker is the scariest thing I've ever heard!
talbain 11-20-06, 05:40 PM I believe if you hit the "X" button when those scenes first start playing, it stops them and goes right to the action. If not "X", it was one of the others.
that's true for the cut scenes. but i'm talking about the parts where you're on the communicator talking to the woman or your other team. you can't skip those parts at all...
First impression, WOW, i started playing and i coulnd't stop.
The reason i purchased the XBox360 in the first place, for this game, nothing else made me want the xbox 360.
Guess what? MONEY well spent, i hope Microsoft fixes the 1080p problem with the vga cable soon so i can hook up GOW on my Sony XBR2-46" tv.
The level with the rain is mind blowing :) it was amazing !
steve68 11-20-06, 06:04 PM I love this game! I still haven't finished yet, though close. I picked up CoD3 the other day and played the first few levels. It's sort of ho-hum compaired to Gears though. They set the bar VERY high with this game and I think that it will be a while until others catch up.

i been playing gears of war since it came out.. and every FPS i play now i am trying to run up and hide behind something.. especially in Call of Duty 3!!! i kept doing it.. almost like a habit.. gears of war is awesome.. highly recommended..
TMSKILZ 11-21-06, 05:53 PM Marcus Gow > Mc Halo1/2/3
TMSKILZ 11-21-06, 05:54 PM Well it's been made official by accident by an MS Rep, the Gears of War will be a trilogy!
That means GOW2 & GOW3 baby!
I kinda figured that would happen, MS wants to get away from having a solo top hit like Halo.

mastahkaz 11-21-06, 06:58 PM Beat it on insane last night. Now I'm ready to try out multiplayer.
mastahkaz 11-22-06, 04:35 AM Wow, no ones posted since i was at work earlier.
Well i just got done playing online for hours while drinking lots of beer. I must say its the most fun I've had with multiplayer since the Halo days.
ChemEng 11-22-06, 10:15 AM Can someone pm me or post as to how you get past the train sequence? I am having trouble with the rail gun part and the flying reavers(?). WilliamR 11-22-06, 10:24 AM Hit X to leave your gun and go to the other gun on the other side. Use it, if one gets passed, hit x go to the other gun, there are two guns.
You can also let off the left trigger and your gun will move faster from one side to the other. That helped me out.
AHDTVDiet 11-22-06, 05:38 PM Act 5 Reavers.
I got by this in casual with no issues.
I got by it in Hardcore with little issue.
On insane this was kind of a problem.
Grab the torque bow before going up the ladder. If any get out of your field of fire hide behind that center area and one torque bow shot in the flesh of the reaver or on one of the guys will take them down. Then you can jump back on the Rail gun.
When I played on insane I had to take out the last 3-4 reavers this way, I could never get them all with the rail gun.
well it did not take long for this to fall apart online. Part of the fun the first week or so was people were actually working together as a team. Now its back to no one talking everyone out for themselves and when you play against a team that IS working together you just get smoked, PLus it just is not as much fun. Oh well guess I will need to start playing COD3. I was really loving this game too.

No one on your friends list is playing this game? I've pretty much only been playing in private rooms, and the more we play, the more fun it is getting. As the map knowledge grows, the teamwork is becoming better and better, and thus the game is becoming more and more fun. R6 is going to take away from our time on it, but so far GoW has provided some of the best team play I've ever experienced, and a big part of it is due to the simplicity of the game.
steve68 11-22-06, 11:56 PM Finally got past RAAM (on casual yes I'm lame). Took several tries, but finally he went down. Now to play through on hardcore. Still loving this game.

Arutha_conDoin 11-23-06, 12:15 AM I'm about ready to try out the Multiplayer part of the game this weekend. I know I'll get the smack put down on me, but I figure if I drink enough beer or Martini's it will not matter anyways.
Quikzilver 11-23-06, 06:24 AM My buddy and I just defeated Raam on Hardcore, he got all of the Dom achievements so now we're going to go through again on insane so I can get the Dom ones. We absolutely loved the ending, very cinematic.
I tried multiplayer before him and I started playing and I actually didn't do too bad. That was my first mp match and I have to say, it was a ton of fun. Stuff like the curb stomp and execution make the game feel a bit more interactive. Overall, I'm very impressed with GOW and am definitely looking forward to the sequels.
Cheers,
Quik

My 2nd system started freezing with GOW. Single player campaign and on live. Sux
I heard there was a way to clear the cache, something about hitting xx, anybody knows?
Go to your system settings via the blades. Go to memory and select your hard drive. Press "Y" for device options. Now press x-x then hold your left bumper and then the right bumper. While still holding the bumpers down hit x-x again and it will ask you if you want to preform maintenance. Select yes and it clears the cache in about 1 sec.
Croberto 11-25-06, 07:39 PM This game rocks. I'm now in search of the final cog tags. I have 26/30.
I find pics on the internet to "help" me find the final ones but it's tough. They really don't describe where they are on the level just a pic so these last 4 have been tough.
So I've now beaten the game twice, both on Casual just so I could see how taking the opposite path (when given the choice) to what I originally took played out and only picked up 1 additional set of dog tags. I actually didn't find any new dog tags over what I encountered initially as on my first pass I didn't get to pick up the set in Act II where you man the spot light to aid Dom in getting to the lights. When I left the spot light I forgot to position it so I could grab the tags. So I did that during my second pass but I didn't encounter any additional tags. Where the heck are these things? I walk around each area before moving to the next and saw breakable objects to pieces in case tags are hidden underneath but no luck. I've gotten 19/30. Are more inserted into the game on the Hardcore and Insane levels? What am I missing here?
Thanks,
Rod
AHDTVDiet 11-25-06, 07:48 PM All can be gotten on Casual.
Some are in areas that you dont get time to walk around in. Such as the 2 in the area around the first Beserker and a couple other places where auto cutscenes will occur, so you got to remember to check DURING some fights. There are some under some breakable stuff, a couch and I think a desk come to mind. They are all there and there is a walkthrough on Gamespot that should help you get close to some of them if you want to use it. If nothing else it can tell you what chapters they are in so you can just skip there and see if you have them. Hope this helps.
AHDTVDiet;
Thanks for the info. After I sent my post I did a search on the Internet and came across a number of sites listing the locations. It looks like what you mentioned, the ones I am missing are in places I wasn't expecting or thinking of the tags at the time. I'll get them next time through on Hardcore :)

Stryker412 11-26-06, 07:27 PM So what's the trick on getting Co-op to work? I keep getting the dreaded connection to host lost error. I know they're working on a patch to fix it but is there some sort of workaround to get it to work?

Just got my 360 this week...COMPUSA had a deal where if you bought a new V3 Razr with 2 year activation they would rebate up to $200 off any in-store purchase. So I got the phone (normally $225, instant rebate down to $29) and the XBox Premium for $430. After the $200 online rebate it should be about $230 total for both the phone and system. My fiance wasn't as impressed with my shopping skills as I was, but what the heck :-)
Got GOW, and had the same freeze issue, hit right away in the prison 'tutorial' section. I haven't gone online yet with the 360, so I'm still running the older OS, and no update of GOW.
Are ppl with updated software still seeing the freeze?
krimson 11-27-06, 11:50 AM You should return your 360 to the store and get a new one if it's freezing up already.

Not the Xbox itself, just the game (menu controls still work, but you can't move or change anything).

Got GOW, and had the same freeze issue, hit right away in the prison 'tutorial' section. I haven't gone online yet with the 360, so I'm still running the older OS, and no update of GOW.
Are ppl with updated software still seeing the freeze?
I just got my 360 this past friday from PC Richards along with GoW and the first thing I noticed when I started it up was that it asked me to update. I had to connect the ethernet cable to my wireless router so it could update the game. If you didnt update, then perhaps try that. If you did, then I would suggest that you return it.
candyrocket786 11-27-06, 02:24 PM I've gotten frozen (just once) in MP after chainsawing somebody. Only input that registered was spinning around in place until I was shot to pieces.
I've encountered this multiple times on MP. Gets pretty damn annoying
MP Glitches I've encountered:
1. Chainsaw through a barricade (if the opposing player is close enough or is on the another side of the barricade). This sometimes results in a "player freeze".
2. Chainsaw "Dancing" - Bascially, the player who gets the kill is also shown performing the action of "getting sawed".
3. Long Range "Frag Tag" - Where a player can "frag tag" another from 3-5ft away.
4. One-Hit "Shot Gun" Kill/Down (No Perfect Reload/No Head Shot)
Arutha_conDoin 11-27-06, 05:27 PM I don't know if this right, but I think I found a way to skip the cut scenes. Right now I am on the train and I need to get past RAAM, but I keep dying, so after the second time of dying I hit the X,Y,A,B buttons all at the same time and it did not make sit through the little cut scene again. Can someone confirm this, or has this been brought up before? Hopefully this is how you can skip through cuts cenes you have seen already.
As for beating RAAM I have yet to do that, but Damn that guy is cool looking. I want to beat it him without hints, but I may just have to give up and look eventually. =)

You can just hit X to skip the cutscenes. As for RAMM, the torque bow is your friend. ;)
Not the Xbox itself, just the game (menu controls still work, but you can't move or change anything).
LOL nevermind. I'm a total noob to consoles, being a longtime PC Gamer. The tutorial wanted me to to hit the left bumper to view my objectives. I replayed it yesterday and it made total sense, but the first time around I thought it had frozen.
Color me dumb.

Yea I figured the Torque bow was the best and I'm assuming I need to hit him when the Kriel are not flying around him? I also have the sniper rifle, but the only thing bad about the Torque Bow is that I only have 10 shots with it.

Removing nades in my rooms is so much better.. To many people just go for them and do this the entire game.. Sure you can shoot them with the shotgun but that's like finding a needle in a hay stack..

virtual-human 11-28-06, 12:46 PM You can remove weapons from the maps? How?
There's an ooption when you're setting up a room to host. I think it's the X button, but whatever it is, the prompt is along the bottom of the screen.
Personally, I have no problem with grenades. There are plenty of strategies to counter them, and if somebody has the 'nads to charge a gun in the face to melee a grenade, more power to them.

When I fired at him with the torque bow, it caused the Kriel to leave his body, then I fire another, did this a few times and he dies. Was REALLY easy.

I must play with pros because in 3rd person you can look around corners and just wait for the enemy to walk up and they plant the nade and backflip away from you.. Or they do a front flip towards you and you basically have one shot with the shotgun to get them before they get you..
You have many options to stop naders, it's all part of the fun of the game. Practice your shotty against them, even better try and get an active reload on your shotty, I find it easier to kill naders. And if you get sticked with the nade just follow the nader he'll die too when it explodes, at least you get rid of him and he can't effect the rest of your team.

Well, you can anticipate the possibility that somebody's lurking around the corner. Take it wide in a position to strafe if possible. Use the same 3rd-person perspective that they have to try to get a look around the corner.
In the open, it should be usually be suicide to charge a player with a grenade in your hand. The player with the gun has the first move. He can shoot while falling back, roll, roadie run, etc. Know your opponent. If they roll in on you, then use the chainsaw instead of the shotgun. It will connect with them in the roll and they will not have a chance to plant one on you. If they just charge, shoot while falling back. If you get caught in a reload or something, try to roll out or roadie run out of there. If possible, lead them towards teammates or at least communicate your position so that they can provide support.
Another deterrent is getting good at taking out the guy with you. Do this by making sure that you roll towards his position and trying your best to stay with him when you get stuck. Unless you're the last guy, most people will give up when met with this tactic as they'd rather play out the round than do an even trade for the team. Except maybe if you're a really good sniper or something and they are particularly selfless.
DaGamePimp 11-29-06, 05:03 AM I played in some ranked matches last night and some of these guys are good , so good that it was not any fun . The problem was they were tag teaming 2-3 guys against each single player , picking us off one at a time and we didn't stand a chance (I know this is team play at work but these guys truly abused it and it just was not any fun) . They were obviously doing it to increase their ranking in the leaderboards and so after a few rounds I just left and went back to the normal player matches . I mean I am not that good at Gears MP as I just have not played it very much online and I don't expect to win all the time but I at least want to be able to play and have a good time , so no more ranked matches for me ;) . Also it sounded like they were comunicating with fallen team members that were spectating and being told where people were on the map , I could hear somebody in the background saying over there behind that car on the left and so on .
Ah well , just like every other online game some people just take winning way too serious .

gmoney80 11-29-06, 09:36 AM No kidding man i went on mp for the first time last night because i finally beat sp on hardcore and i went into the standard game not the ranking game and all these guys were tag teaming me i lasted like 1 min at the most in most of the games i played it was driving me nuts i know i suck at mp because i never played before but damn i had like 1 kill in an hour last night and i could hear these a holes laughing. ahhhhhhhhhhh damn you teens and guys that live on the game all day get a job.
krimson 11-29-06, 09:59 AM Working in a team is considered "cheap" now? I agree that it can be frustrating when you are at the butt-end of a stacked team, but I hardly see how it was their fault.

Sounds like both players were playing on the same TV (split screen).
From what I've seen in the MP matches... sometimes the best strategy can be to stay together.
...and communication is always a must.
MP is all about pack hunting. Individual players will get cut down in the buzzsaw if they go cowboy. The worst tactic is to have everyone do their own thing. Second worst is to divide into teams of two. The best is either to travel all four together or three together with one flanker (depending on the situation and the map).
Once you get with other people who do that, it's actually a lot of fun. And eventually you'll get frustrated with people who want to go cowboy and take away a member of the pack. You need the fire power of the whole group to take on the firepower of the other group to get quick kills.
If there was one rule that I would say is the most important rule in MP, it's to hunt in packs. Don't try be the go-it-alone hero.
mastahkaz 11-29-06, 12:35 PM MP is all about pack hunting. Individual players will get cut down in the buzzsaw if they go cowboy. The worst tactic is to have everyone do their own thing.
This is so very true. I was playing last night with some friends and we were getting our asses handed to us. I think it was something like 0-6, then we thought "hey lets try sticking together". We ended up coming back and eventually winning the series of matches.
Just don't stay TOO close together in case they're throwing grenades.
It's a small thing, but it makes all the difference in the world.
I'm by no means a great player, but I've played enough to learn these few things.
1. Work together, as a team.
2. Headshots are worth the time and effort. Get used to habitually shooting for the head. Body shots are lazy, and you can train yourself to keep you reticle at eye level. Grenaders are harder to stop from rushing you 1 on 1 if you are shooting for their body.
3. Make it a habit to be certain you have an active reload. I usually will fire off a few rounds at the very start of a match to bet an active reload. That way, i'm sure I have an advantage if I get caught in a 1 v. 1 firefight.
4. Be deliberate in your movement. This is the part I have the hardest time making a habit. If your moving, either roadie run, roll past obstacles (to avoid a hider) or go from cover to cover. Try to avoid just jogging around past cover that enemy could be hiding behind.
I would be interested in hearing tips from other people. Like I said, I'm not a great player or anything, but the above are just some of my thoughts on tactics.
XBL Tag = Boxcar Overdrive
BTW, if you have a perfect active reload with the sniper rifle, one shot anywhere will take a person down. If it's not perfect, you will of course need a headshot. So if you get the sniper rifle, you may want to sizzle off a round to get a perfect active reload. That way you can shoot a person anywhere and be good to go.
mboland 11-29-06, 03:29 PM I think the active reload damage bonus only lasts during those 5-10 seconds that your active reloaded ammo is blinking.
DaGamePimp 11-29-06, 04:03 PM Working in a team is considered "cheap" now? I agree that it can be frustrating when you are at the butt-end of a stacked team, but I hardly see how it was their fault.
Nobody said it was "cheap" , I stated it was team play and that they were simply abusing it because they were all ringers that have probably been playing Gears MP every single day since it was released . My point was to avoid the ranked matches unless you have played a good deal of MP and have some team organization ready to go , if not then you will get your a$$ handed to you and laughed at in the process .

Still on single player, anyone can advise how to take down the locusts with shotguns? I am in the caverns trying to get out just before daylight. Thanks, and remember to use spoiler tags!
I finished the game last night on Hardcore and got the achievements for finishing the game, and finishing the 5th stage, but no achievement for defeating RAAM on hardcore. What's up with that?
That is really unfortunate and would be another example of the glitches we are encountering. When I was playing Act V on Hardcore I was about to head up the ladder to take on the Reavers and I accidently turned and walked the wrong way and ended up in what looked to be between 2 of the cars, I couldn't do anything but turn 360's, I had to quit and restart at the checkpoint whick luckily was literally right where I left off at the ladder.

I continued from my last save today, beat RAAM again and got the achievements. Wasn't too difficult the second time around actually.

Maybe a silly suggestion, but does anyone want to start a "nOOb training group" so that none of us get completely dessimated when we play online? Some of these guys and gals are basically pros, and those of us who don't play onlne as much can be a bit imitdated... but not me of course...lol :D

We can probably startup a password protected server for us avs n00bs. We should probably play some coop to get in the groove.

Arutha_conDoin 12-04-06, 03:30 AM Apparently I suck against RAAM. He is still kicking my A$$. I used the Torq bow and after 12 shots he is still not going down. 6 of those shots are for scattering the Kriel. The others are pretty close to head shots. I just am getting tired of this part of the game. How many damn shots does it take to bring this guy down? I've even used the Sniper Rifle after the Bow and he still will not go down! I had one clip (so however many that holds) for the torque bow and he died on the last shot. No headshots. Just to the body. Are you on Hardcore or something? If not, are you sure you are hitting his body and sticking it to him (you have to hold the trigger down to lock on). Not sure why it wouldn't work for you. I killed him before he moved forward from the back of the train, it was REALLY quick.

You could always get lucky like me. One time I ducked behind the barricade at the very beginning of the stage and shot from there as normal. When he finally got to my location he just stood in front of the barricade and did nothing but move from side to side a little and send his kryll out. I just sat there and blind fired round after round of the shotgun until he finally fell.
But yeah, up until that happened I thought it was going to be impossible as well.

I believe when you load up, there should be an option for "load last checkpoint."

Which checkpoint? And what weapon do you think you need? This has happened a couple of times with me and I usually get the weapon I need pretty quickly.
Example: fighting the Beserker. During the cutscene my character says he still has the Hammer. But I actually don't. Picked one up as I entered the yard.

It's in Act II, after you open up a door and go into some type of courtyard where there is a building in the background and some cars after you move past a fence. I think i need the basic machine gun weapon, but all i have is the shotgun and what i think is one of the default weapons that fires slowly...
mastahkaz 12-05-06, 03:26 PM Why do you think you need a specific weapon? You can get the job done with any one. The only time you need a specific weapon to kill someone is the hammer of dawn, and those can be found in abundance when you need them.

but the gun is in the dark. How you avoid getting killed by the kryll ?
evobrett 12-06-06, 04:32 PM but the gun is in the dark. How you avoid getting killed by the kryll ?Yeah, it is WAY different on insane. Touching any shadows means death in about half a second of exposure, assuming you were at full health prior to that. Not to mention 2-3 bullets from his chain gun means your body is rendered into bite size pieces. He has excellent aim as well. You have to blind fire to damage him and live. Take a peak and you are dead. Unless there are two players and the other is distracting him. :)

This isn't my experience on Insane. The helicopter with NPC allies distracts him more than enough to hit him with a bow shot, then get a good 2-3 hits in from the sniper gun. If you're good at getting perfect reloads each shot will damage him a lot more. Sometimes his rail gun will kill me quick, but there's usually more than enough time to pop up and fire a headshot.
Sometimes he won't even make it all the way down to meet you before dying ... other times you just have to run around (staying in the light) and do it again from the other side. I've never needed the tripod gun. Didn't even notice it actually until running around for fun with a friend the other night.
With perfect reloads you can drop him in 8-10 head shots. Maybe less.
With a partner it's dead easy to beat Raam on Insane.

Wow, that sounds so easy. Like it is on the casual setting or something. If raam is so easy for you while playing on insane by yourself then you are an elite player.
Rakesh.S 12-07-06, 01:35 PM sorry if this has already been posted . .but with beating Raam . all I did was shoot a bit . .hide . .as he got closer ran to front of train . .where he was at the begining of the fight and got up on the tripod Gatling gun and sank a bazilion rounds in his fat a$$ . . .try that. .. .this was in hardcore . .
Had a question . .I heard the ending is different in single mode then in co-op . .anyone know this is true? . .my tag is the same as my name here. ;)
I beat the game on Casual last night, and you cannot use the gatling gun..no way. The thing is sitting in the dark -- the kryll will eat you up in a few seconds.
It is basically a trap.

I don't think that's true. I've been on the gun many times without being eaten by the Kryll. However, I do think the gun is worthless on the harder difficulties as I get shot off the thing in a matter of seconds.
Gears of War has insane graphics and the single player mode is really cool. However, when it comes multiplayer I still have to side with Halo 2.
teckademic 12-08-06, 02:16 AM I was playing GOW, turned it off, then came back 10min later and there was an update, but what does the update suppose to fix? I haven't notice anything different.
DaGamePimp 12-08-06, 04:45 AM I have not had any update on Gears ... strange ???

teckademic 12-08-06, 11:48 AM hmmm... that is strange. It signed me out of live until I did the update. Did anyone else receive an update?
teckademic 12-08-06, 11:57 AM called up a buddy of mine and he too received the update last night. I looked it up and it is suppose to fix the multiplayer issues in which many gamers reported connection issues, as well as other bugs in the game.
Morkeleb 12-08-06, 12:00 PM I just played some GoW and didn't receive any update. Plus the matches I played still had voice issues.

I remember there was an update when I first played GOW on my new 360.
Damn thing screwed up my console within seven days.
When I loaded GOW in my replacement console, the update wasn't required.

Take a peak and you are dead. Unless there are two players and the other is distracting him. :)Finally beat raam on insane by myself. It is real easy even on insane if you can get him stuck. He gets stuck on the other side of the second cube shaped block on the right side fairly often. (there are 4 in a rectangular grid) Rush to the second block and blind fire at him a couple times so he approaches you. He will sometimes get stuck on the other side of that block and will be unable to kill you if you stay in cover. Blind fire a torque bow shot at him then empty a clip of assault rifle bullets before his shield returns. You can toss a couple grenades at him too.
Arutha_conDoin 12-09-06, 11:44 PM Apparently I really suck against RAAM. I have not beaten him yet on Casual and I have spent an hour on it just tonight! Heck I even went back to the previous level so I could have the Shotgun. With the bow(12 shots) I still can not get him down! I probably put in atleast 8 arrows into him, and he is still coming at me. I then use the Shotgun when he is in close, but no go. Those damn Kriel do not leave him enough if I run out of arrows. Oii I can not wait until I get passed this guy. I do not want to host a game just to get past him either. I want to beat him on my own.
Arutha_conDoin 12-10-06, 01:53 AM Ok I finally got passed RAAM. It took me longer then it should, but atleast I did it by myself. For some reason I thought there was still one more Chapter to go. I'm looking forward to the next game in the series.
omegagen 12-10-06, 10:01 AM I for the life of me cannot kill RAAM!! I bet I have tried at least a 100 times!! I've been playing solo and don't want to do co-op so I guess I'll keep trying!
gamelover360 12-10-06, 10:33 AM I felt the RAAM fight was a very weak finish and an unimaginative end to an otherwise great single player experience. He is very easy. I don't want to give it away if you don't know how stupidly simple it is (and what a lack of skill it requires), but it was a letdown.
schticker 12-10-06, 02:13 PM Odd again. I dumped the hammer right after beating the Berserker.
You never have to carry the Hammer beyond the point at which you need it. It will be provided for you when necessary.

Torque, Lancer, nades. Stay at the location you started the sequence at, and stay low. Empty your Torque into him (must learn to be efficient with the reloading and the aiming process). After that, go to Lancer (active reload bonus a must here), nades, Lancer, nades, wash and repeat. You should take him down. Do not panic and move from cover. Both the Torque and nades will move the Kryll, although it's sort of a myth that he is invulnerable with them around.
Stay cool, and be persistent. It took me three different weapon combos to figure this out. The rate of fire from the Lancer and speedy reload times are critical.
Rakesh.S 12-10-06, 02:31 PM i didn't have too many problems on casual against RAAM ..use grenades to get his shield off, and use the sniper rifle (i didn't pick up the torque bow) and give him a few headshots every time. Keep moving to a lighted area as he gets closer.
ratpacker 12-10-06, 04:48 PM Knowing how to kill Raam and actually executing it are two entirely different things. My way was to hide behind the first cube to the right of his spawning point, hit him with two torque bow shots, and wait for him to make his way over to my cube where he will hopefully get stuck. Then I blind tossed gernades behind him, which shoo's off the kryill, and proceeded to blind fire the shotgun into his dome. You just have to get him stuck and use all of your gernades and bows to rid him of his shield, and eventually he'll go down using your other weapons.
ratpacker,
Your method is very similar to the one that I used but I was not successful on insane until I had a couple perfect reloads with the shotgun.
Dan Lau 12-10-06, 07:38 PM Epic games have been in the business a long time, and put a lot of technology into the game engine used in GOW, and used to render our friend below. These days 'game engine not only refers to rendering and collision detection but also to AI, character animation, networking, scripting and asset management. It's pretty interesting, for those inclined.
The Unreal engine has also been ported to the PS3 and we'll get a first look at it when Unreal Tournament 2007 (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/748/748505.html) ships.
Read about the Unreal Engine 3 (http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml) used to bring Gears to life!

WilliamR 12-11-06, 09:28 AM Wow, played Gears of War co-op split screen over the weekend. Holy buckets, the game is a blast playing with a friend through co-op. Very cool how when you come to split paths you go one way the other guy actually goes the other way. Really nice coordinating the attacks, flanking, etc. Total blast, way better then playing it alone.
steve68 12-11-06, 12:58 PM The last time I killed RAAM he got stuck right at the very first obsticle. In fact I didn't use anything but the sniper rifle. RAAM will point at you and the Kryl will all fly off. I think it took 13 head shots with perfect active reload and he went down. This was on casual. I'm playing through on Hardcore now.

Slordak 12-11-06, 01:07 PM Any thoughts on beating RAAM on "Insane" difficulty? While it's possible to beat him on "Hardcore" difficulty with some planning, on "Insane" the issues are further compounded. First, there's a question of ammunition; it's possible to empty literally every weapon without killing him. Second, there's the issue with the raiders flying by; on Hardcore, they're mostly a nuisance, but on Insane, they can kill you even if you're ducked behind cover.
If you are using the sniper rifle, I'm not sure how you have enough time to aim the sniper rifle at his head before being killed; it only takes a few hundred milliseconds to die if either RAAM or the raiders are actively shooting.
I assume that playing with a partner is probably required. When Dom is played by the computer, he provides very little fire power and gets killed quickly.

Torque Bow (Pefect Reload)
Sniper Rifle (Perfect Reload)
Grenades (for use up-close / or when he is at a stand-still location)
Cover System (Two hits from him "down" you)
Have the other player distract him (w/torque or lancer) while you go for the headshot(w/torque/sniper) . If you can't get him with the head shot, then just make sure you hit him with a "Perfect Reload Shot"
Wozzer73 12-11-06, 03:42 PM I love that gears has its own thread (as it should). I ordered it online then got impatient and went and bought a copy, now i have two haha. Totally agree on coop being insanely freaking good - I played coop straight through for 2-3 days, then literally went and bought a 360 of my own so i could play more heh.
Wozzer73 12-11-06, 03:45 PM BTW, coop is way way way easier than playing single player, if you haven't played alone, give it a go to see just how hard the game REALLY is :-)
ratpacker 12-11-06, 06:00 PM Slordak- The method I descibed in post #661 was on insane. It might take you a couple of dozen times, but eventually it will work. Just make sure your reloads are perfect. BTW, don't worry about Dom- if you do it right, you'll kill Raam before Dom bleeds out.
AHDTVDiet 12-11-06, 06:28 PM Does Dom bleed out?
I played GoW on all levels and never had a teammate bleed out even if I ignored them the entire battle. Now in RB6 I have had people bleed out.

Perfect reloads are not necessary. I just used the TB to scatter the shield and the assault rifle to damage him. One clip per shield scatter takes about 7-8 clips. I had a couple hundred bullets left when he fell.
Arutha_conDoin 12-12-06, 03:29 AM Anyone having troubles with connecting to someone hosting a game on co op? I tried to connect to a friends game the other night and it would never connect. I never could get him to leave his game to see if he could join a co op game I hosted.
We also tried it today and it still didn't work from when he sent the invite.
Storm28 12-12-06, 10:57 AM I've been having the same connection issues on and off. I'm hoping the upcoming patch addresses it.
I managed to defeat RAAM solo on insane by getting him stuck on one of those small barriers near where he starts. Right after the cutscene, I would roadie run to the barrier and wait for him to come after me. Eventually he would get stuck and I was able to use the Torque to remove his shield and blindfire with the shotgun.
It took me several tries, because sometimes the Reavers would take me out even when I was behind the cover. I also had to backtrack and play from the previous checkpoint to make sure I had the shotgun. I tried with the Lancer a few times and didn't have any luck.
Anyway, it feels good to finally beat the game on Insane. Now, I can concentrate on the multiplayer :)

If either/both of you have a router, is the NAT open? Do you have ports 88, 2074 and 3074 forwarded for both UPD and TCPIP? If not, try that.
LR6AGB001 12-12-06, 05:24 PM Place the X360's IP address into DMZ on your router settings, I don't think the X360 requires to be behind the router's firewall since it's a game console.

When the game first came out I had no problems jumping into a hosted game or Multiplayer game. I checked out a few other games and all worked just fine. It just seemed this game in the last week started giving me fits. I'll work on it later. Now that I have finished the game, it's back to NBA 2K7 and working on a season. I created a player and took him through 24/7 and signed myself to the Suns roster. I don't think Amare will be scoring the points in this game. :D

Yeah, it's hit-or-miss it seems when you've got a poor ping. Even if it's working though, this should give you less lag. And this game is sensitive to your NAT.
11.0 - Connection Issues
Losing Connection
The main reason that people lose connections in multiplayer is because either they or the host have their NAT (firewall) set up incorrectly to work on Xbox Live. To see if you have this issue, go to the System Settings blade in the dashboard and choose Network Settings. From there choose to Test Xbox Live Connection. If your NAT returns "strict" or "moderate" then that is likely your problem. To work correctly on Live you want that test to return "open". To acheive this you simply have to port forward a specific set of ports to your 360 as detailed by this Microsoft support bulletin:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874
Unable to Connect to Host
Unfortunately, this error message is not really giving you the whole story as usually it simply means "Server is now full". What is actually happening is that between the time that the query for hosts was sent and the list was displayed, some of the servers have filled up. This is especially true of Quickmatch and of any host that is displayed with a greater player count than "4/8". In the short term, the best way to avoid this is to use Custom Match and only select servers that display "1/8" player count as that will increase your chances of joining before it's full.
Thanks,
Rod.

weremichael 12-12-06, 08:29 PM How do you pull up the X360 address? I'm assuming I go into the Network settings page and view the IP Address there?
You want to create a DMZ address on your router and then go into your 360's network settings and set it up manually to that address.
Slordak 12-13-06, 09:33 AM Thanks for the advice on RAAM, guys; I successfully solo'ed him last night on "Insane" difficulty.
In terms of munitions, I used all 5-6 shots from the torque bow, all 4 grenades, and about 15 shots from the sniper rifle (mostly with perfect reloads). I didn't bother trying to line up his head with the sniper shots, since it leaves one vulnerable for too long, but I tried to make sure to get a good hit in nonetheless. Towards the end of the fight, I wound up doing a lot of blind firing with the sniper rifle, but at a close enough distance it seems to actually work.
GrooveRite 12-13-06, 03:46 PM Should I port forward the connection to my Xbox? I just set it up with a DMZ address and was wondering if I should take a few more steps or is it not neccessary?? Wozzer73 12-13-06, 11:14 PM On my WGR614 v5, even if I port forward 88 and 3074, testing my XBox Live connection from the 360 says "strict" NAT. Try taking him on the Insane difficulty. Just randomly out of the blue I decided to play/host my first co-op game and waited until someone showed up and defeating General RAAM only took a matter of seconds. I had used the torque bow which had an ammo running in at 8 and my backup used the lancer. Took me 7 shots and 2 lancer shots from my partner there to defeat 'em. I was shocked at how easy it was in co-op rather than playing single player. I believe it was even faster than this video demonstrated...

If you have your Xbox in a DMZ there's no need to forward any ports as the router won't block anything.
I have the same model Belkin router as you and all I did was open TCP and UDP ports 3074. Didn't bother with UDP 88, and I Live says I have an open NAT. No problems whatsoever. If you want to de-DMZ your Xbox, open those ports and you should be good.
What'sHD 12-16-06, 06:49 PM I read this article which claimed that if the 360 is outputting 720p to a 1280 by 768 tv, the tv wll vertically stretch the image.
Does that mean I should set the TV to 16:9 AR? There is a choice provided in the menu system for that and of course, it creates slim horizontal black bars.
My main query is: When I use the 16:9 AR feature, does the TV scaler stretch the 720p to 768p due to my TV's nativerez and then scale BACK down to 720p
OR
Does the scaler (at 16:9 setting) simply show the input 720p image, as is, without any scaling etc.?
P.S. The article is at http://www.ctoforaday.com/articles/000055.html
i just got a 360 and Gears. I have it connected to a 1080p 67" tv with VGA cable and can't wait to play. had bro and bro in law over for fam party and wanted to play but we didn't get the chance as fam wants to just watch hdtv not us play a game though i'm sure it would have been entertaining.
I loved Resistance Fall of Man on my bro in laws ps3. I was just worried i need to get some updates for 360 like 1080p (even though i know Gears only does 1080i) and vga update etc.
i dont have wireless adapter and dont hae it connected in room with pc. someoen told me i couldn't just connect to a spare router i have and my laptop on wifi.
i'm so tired now but really want to try the game but that is great that it is really fun coop and easier too.
sucks i have to go to wifes stupid work holiday party tomorrow further delaying me finally gettin to play gears. Pissed i didn't get it a CC when they had it for 44.99
hopefully tomorrow will get whatever else i need, get 360 updated and be ready to play when whoever comes over to play coop. i thought maybe it wouldn't be split screen since its 3rd person but i guess when you go diff ways. on 67" screen though thats 33.5" screen eac more or leess so should be good.

lmychajluk 12-19-06, 11:30 AM Also, once you get outside, if you get the Berserker to run into the concrete blocks, she'll be stunned for a few seconds, giving you time to use the Hammer.
ArthurL 12-19-06, 11:44 AM How many times do we encounter the Berserker? I hate this thing!
WilliamR 12-19-06, 02:41 PM How many times do we encounter the Berserker? I hate this thing!
Two more times after this. One of them is extremely frustrating (I wont ruin anything). The other is VERY easy.
quickfire 12-19-06, 07:29 PM Well I finally beat the Berzerker.,... I turned off the sound and had it defeated in no time.... Im going for the car next.....those kryll are * * * holes! Is it me? Are the graphics getting better as I go farther in the game ?
ArthurL 12-19-06, 08:24 PM Two more times after this. One of them is extremely frustrating (I wont ruin anything). The other is VERY easy.
Damn, that means one more time for me. :(
quickfire 12-19-06, 08:48 PM Which one is the easy one William ....the 2 or 3rd?
dropzone7 12-20-06, 08:47 AM I finished the game on Casual a few days after I got the game. Now I am playing back through it on Hardcore and I have hit a snag. I don't recall which act this is right now but it's the first time that you have the ability to push a car down the street for cover. You push the car for a few seconds and it trips a street light which keeps the Krill away. It's after you meet Dom's friend and pass through that house. Well, anyway the car is stuck now and wont move forward for some reason. If I try to run forward then I get cut down by the Krill. I'm also very low on ammo at this point and waste every bit I have just trying to hold my position behind that dam car! Oh well, I'm not sure why it's stuck but I suppose I am going to have to start the level over or something. It was going pretty smoothly until I reached this point.
WilliamR 12-20-06, 09:01 AM Which one is the easy one William ....the 2 or 3rd?
The third (last).
I just got this game last night... wow. I spent literally 15 minutes doing the training stage just wandering around looking at stuff. This game gets INTENSE!! I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares about Krill and Beserkers.
I'm not too crazy about the gameplay, but I'm going to chalk it up to the learning curve for now (and I usually prefer FPS). The most annoying thing was trying to get into cover and having Marcus dive out into the open to get shot like an idiot. I'd be nice if they had a little indicator or something to tell you the object you're standing next to is elligible to use as cover, since some things aren't and you end up, well, diving out into the open like an idiot when you try. they really should of broken out some of the functions of the "A" button into different buttons, and used "A" just for actions pertaining to cover.
Overall, I'm loving it though. It's one of the most immersive shooter games I've played. My girlfriend actually had to leave the room during a few parts 'cause she couldn't handle the tension, lol. She wasn't a big fan of the geiser of blood splattering all over when you chainsaw people apart either. :D
finally opened and played this game last night. had it for a few days but was holding out to see if I might find better price. was pissed I missed it for 45 (15 less then normal) at CC but it was back up when I was there.
got 6 off the reg price @ cusa and 10% off any other accessory I got with system so better then nothing but not as good as thefree wireless controller deal with system at cusa I think($50 value though I saw that for lik 10 less also and missed that too) and not as good as th CC deal of free platinum hit $30 game with system whih was running when I got but was pissed gow went up so didn't get and didn't make it back and ended up right next to a cusa which there are less of so I was like whatever. they say they'll price match after the fact but prob not with the one local pc shop haf it with some 100 off rebate which was prob the best deal. and I have 21 days to return or have cusa match if I find better which I'm sure there will be after christmas but ill pro b be too lazy to bother. oh well. 360 is better then I thought even so its worth it just wish I could have gotten best deal possible to better justify it to wife but I couldn't wait any longer now that gears was out, heh.
was basically waiting to get the 360 for this game. its just that I have orig xbox modded and tons of games I haven't even played much. xbox was the best sytem yet to date because of and after modding. getting for 150 then cheap mod chip etc and free games I couldn't not get it at that point. I told myself I wouldn't get 360 until I played more of the games I had on orig xbox and 360 (or any system) was mod/hackable.
but I got new 67'' 1080p hdtv and many ppl on owner thread of set have 360 and GOW and say it is amazing on it so I had too. and it is. 360 set to 1920x1080 is sick. plus I got the hddvd drive for super cheap and need the 360 to use unless you connect to pc but not sure the compatible versions of power and windvd are avilable yet so yeah the hddvd drive was another excuse to get 360 at this point.
least I can connect online using laptop on wifi and not have to buy the $100 wireless adapter. and the 720p game trailers and demos are awesome. some are short/limited (burnout) or timed (stupid kameo) but some are long and I even got stuck(tomb raider). those 3 were already on my sytem but dl'd a bunch of others half of which I've tried. prey demo was over 1gb so should be a good demo. I just wish they offered a larger hdd then 20gb especially since ps3 has 60gb. and why they sell 20gb for $100 if you didn't get system with it. guess to make platinum (or whatever they call it) version worth it. but they really should let you use your own larger hdd. hopefully a hack for that at some point.
speaking of online which can you play gears (or any game) with the free xbox live silver?
coop is great but even on a 67'' screen ( 33.5 each) its still not as good as full screen. would like to play coop and whatever mode online with bro or friend so we both have full screen.
do all platinum xbox come with 3 free mo or something of gold? in which case I have it and will try but hopefully not addicted cus I can't pay monthly for another thing like that that I will use sporadically at best.
speaking of split screen, there isn't an option to do horizontal split instead of vertical? I love games that give option of both. horizontal lets you see wider but on a widescreen tv its wide enough and you need to see higher/above and below where as on square 4:3 screen maybe horizontal split is better. but its amazing that you don't seem to lose any graphic quality when in split screen like most games on other systems.
so 360 and gow is great so far and those are my only two questions right now. is there a way to make the splitscreen vertical instead of horizontal? and can you play online with live silver? if not does plat system come with 3 free mo of live gold?
teckademic 12-21-06, 11:59 AM how do you do this super jump that I have been hearing about online? I've seen it before and the person looks like he flies over the barrier or block in front, but I always thought it was some kind of glitch that caused it.

I think you are mistaking this car for the one that moves. I've done the same thing.
Look around I bet their is some propane tanks. I'm sure the car that should move is just ahead.

AHDTVDiet 12-25-06, 12:43 AM YAY, I FINALLY beat RAAM on insane, by myself, without glitches.
Previously I was only able to beat him on insane in co-op. (note I did beat him in casual and hardcore previously).
For insane I used Torque bow/hammerburst and a boat load of tries.
AHDTVDiet 12-25-06, 07:03 AM Question about AI Dom.
Does anyone have any clue on how he determines what weapons to carry?
Last time I played insane he had somehow acquired the sniper rifle for the end of ACT III but this time he didnt have it. This time at the beginning of ACT V when trying to jump on the train I noticed he had aqcuired the Torque bow which I had never seen him use before.
If there is some way to prompt him to use specific weapons that would be helpful. Having him with a sniper in ACTIII was very, very helpful last time and the missions was harder this time with him just using a Lancer. Also, it would have been nice to have him put the dam torque bow away in ACT V as he was running around like a chicken with his head cut off and most of his explosive bolts were ending up right next to me in cover. He is more of a liability then a help with that thing, although it would be interesting to have him have it or sniper rifle during the RAAM fight.

No idea, I didn't even know that this was a possibility. If anyone has done this please share with us. Dom is as useful as an a##$%^e on your elbow in the RAAM fight to paraphrase a line in Kill Bill vol. 2. :D
Were you playing co-op at anytime? I have found him with different weapons when i join in with others. Nothing like having a boomshot with two rounds when you really need something else. Now I wonder how that would do with Raam?
AHDTVDiet 12-27-06, 06:07 PM I was not playing on co-op. The first time I saw him with the sniper was when I was going through ActIII on insane before ever playing a co-op game. I did have to co-op at the end that time to beat RAAM.
This time I again was playing by myself on insane the entire game and he had the TB at the beginning of ACT V. I didnt notice if it was on his back during the RAAM fight at the end, but all he was using against RAAM was the Lancer.
do you need live gold to play gears online coop with others? or will silver do? ifyou do need gold eff that and paying extra. just get someone to play with you in person.
though I do wish I could play full screen coop instead of split even on 67" tv its hard to see above and below with a horizontal split screen line as opposed to a vertical split line. widescreen tv is already wide enough so to me a vertical split line with screen. on right and left instead of top bottom would be better.
they should have given the choice for vert or horizontal split like some games have done in the past.

I am pretty sure you need Gold.
FreeBaGeL 12-28-06, 08:16 PM So this may sound like a silly question, but I was under the impression all along that in order to use the chainsaw you had to hold B to start it up and then press RT to rev it and actually attack with it. It definitely makes a noise when you press RT while holding B.
However, I was just chatting with a friend and he said you need only hold B, not press RT. Is this true? Does pressing RT do anything other than make a little sound?
AHDTVDiet 12-28-06, 08:28 PM As far as I know, RT is only good for making a cooler noise.
I am pretty sure you need Gold.
oh lame. whose paying for that? bleh. at most id get the 1900 points for $20 or whatever at Target and i think you can use that to get gold for awhile
i mean i'd like to try it but just not worth it for how little i'd play online.
As far as I know, RT is only good for making a cooler noise.
oh thats good to know you just need hit B for the chain saw part of the gun for close combat. i think many ppl thought you also had to hit RT.
btw Target had GOW for $39, so i got it and returned it to CUSA with my receipt from there unopened where i had paid $54 (10% off 60)
i was pissed when i missed it for 45 i think it was at CC but 39 even better.
Target also had the NYko play and charge for 9.99 so i got two of those and returned the one i paid more for to cusa then exchanged one of them for the official MS one which i realized fit better but otherwise not worth paying double (20) over the nyko version play and charge. so ended up with one nyko one and one ms one both for 9.99
Target had the wireless controller for 44.99 but i already got it for that with 10% off 50 at cusa. i think i've seen it as low as 40 but oh well. have a couple more weeks to get best price but Cusa doesn't even match Target which i have them right next to eachother. they only match best buy and CC they said so thats lame and i just return then.
would like to find the 360 for less then 400 but it seems stuck at that. i thought after christmas it would come down and it might after the return period is over which for cusa anything bought before christmas can be returned by jan 7 or something but i bought end of dec. so i had past then using the full 21 days or whatever. CC would have been better with 30 days i think.
also CC had deal for free plat hit game with 360. that might have been better at a $30 value then just 10% off any game and accessory i got which didnt' even save 30 and now that i returned 2 things including the game w hich was what i saved most on as it was most expensive item i am def looking for a better deal on 360
i've seen free 2nd wireless controller which is essentially a $50 value so thats good and i've even seen something about a $100 rebate for 360 from a local pc shop. should have check that out and will see if they still have or w hat they have now.
its just a pain to find best deal/price and then hope you can adjust/return.
i know i can find better deal on the vga cable but prob only by getting 3rd party one and i always like first party better so if the official ms vga is set at its price then 10% off i got might be best and same with optical cable. i like how the vga cable came with th rca audio to pc audio adapter i needed for my tv. if cheaper vga cable doesnt' have that and i have to get the adapter separately then its less worth it.
i think thats the onl;y accessories i got and did half decent price wise and got evething i needed mostly and nothing i didnt'.
had to be frugal and get best prices on the 360 stuff as i spent over 3k on new tv.
i did get the hddvd drive for super redic cheap though off someone.
lover GOW but what other games are worth it.
highest rated by ign seem to be Rainbow Six Vegas but i'm a little tired of RS and the review said the graphics are a little fuzzy so that turns me off a little but meanwhile its one of hte highest rated games. again by ign but usually if htey have it high all other erviews do also give or take a point. best thing is avg of the main review sites/mags.
also Ghost REcon advanced warfighter but thts another tom clancy and i'm not too excited to get that either.
i' interested in what 1080p games there are as my tv is 1080p. only one i know of is Sonic though and dont thin its that great but might get it just for 1080p
AHDTVDiet 12-29-06, 03:34 AM RB6, GRAW, COD2, COD3, Condemned, Oblivion, Kameo are all great games. I dont know about the 1080P as it is not important to me, I am unconvinced I would be able to see any difference.
spinksjinx 12-29-06, 10:30 AM I know I am probably late in this thread but I just beat GOW and RAAM on Hardcore...I thought people had a rough time with him? One of the easier boss fights I have played in a long time.
busybee 12-29-06, 11:50 AM I could also add glowing reviews to the chorus of others, but I felt a couple of disappointments with this game. Perhaps from buying it with higher expectations.
A lot of time was put into the mechanics behind the game engine. Obviously important as they will license the technology. But not enough on the storyline and missions. The game is just plain too short and too easy. Although Call of Duty 2 was not as stunning graphically, I had many more hours of entertainment than GOW. Same was true with Ghost Recon. You pretty much need to join Live to get full value for your money. Otherwise I would recommend renting this game.
Second, the skill level required to play is pretty flat. There are no advanced tricks you can learn. There are few nuances in the weapons, like needing to hold your breath for the sniper rifle. They are just pretty basic.
That said, GOW gives you a great feeling right off the bat and was a lot of fun to play. I couldn't possibly give it a 10 though because there is room for so much more potential. I hope other game makers piggy back on the engine and take it to the next level.
Scmedic 12-29-06, 12:13 PM How do you hold your breath? I had never seen that...
Hey Quatre... I'll sell you my VGA cheap, as my Philips has no VGA. :(
busybee 12-29-06, 12:36 PM Sorry, bad wording on my part. What I meant to say was that holding your breath is an example of something you can't do. It's not as sophistocated or realistic.
BoomerBrian 12-29-06, 03:36 PM Sorry, bad wording on my part. What I meant to say was that holding your breath is an example of something you can't do. It's not as sophistocated or realistic.
That is true. However the sniper rifle in Gears is alot harder to use than the sniper rifle in COD.
1) You have to pull the rifle away to reload.
2) You have to hit them in the head to kill them. Sometimes you can drop them when hitting them in the body but when playing execution they will get back up.
With COD all you have to do is hit them and they are dead.
AHDTVDiet 12-29-06, 03:59 PM Took me about the same length of time to beat COD2 and COD3 on normal as it took me to beat GoW. Now COD2 and especially COD3 veteran was a little harder then GoW insane. On my 4th play through of GoW I felt it seemed short but then I had all the parts memorized and was having so much fun not having to look for Cog Tags or worrying about achievments that time flew. But I think that had more to do with me being in the game as it was 2AM before I knew it.
james138 12-30-06, 03:52 PM I have been playing GOW since Christmas and I love it. The question I have is that I am correct in thinking that you can change the difficulty of the game each time you load it. Am I right?
I started out playing the game on casual (I'm not a huge gamer) and the game was too easy. I've since then been playing it on hardcore and it still seems pretty easy. When I first went from casual to hardcore I noticed a big difference. I was killed a lot and it was a lot harder. But now I don't die that often and there doesn't seem to be that much of a challange. Is it possible that despite playing the game set to 'hardcore' it is really just set to as 'casual'. Or it doesn't recognize the hardcore setting?
AHDTVDiet 12-30-06, 04:18 PM Nope, I think that the game is just easy once you get the hang of it. You can verify though by going to "load last chapter". You will see a difference in what a Casual save looks like vs a Hardcore save. I think Casual has one star, Hardcore has 2 and Insane has 3. So if you play a chapter and then check this you will see what level you completed it on.
Scmedic 12-30-06, 05:21 PM Has only else noticed that it almost seems like people are cheating on live GOW matches?
I've had other teams show up right around a corner when the match just started, I've taken one shots to the chest and been killed, when at the same time, I'll hit them with the shotgun in the head and they don't flinch...
How is this done? I hate it. :(

Don't know how it is done but I have noticed the shotgun to be very inconsistent. I have shot people in the head twice and they don't go down. Then they shoot me once in the chest and I explode. Some of this may have to do with the active reload. Although it only lasts for 5 seconds. I don't know if they are cheating or if the game is buggy.
Scmedic 12-30-06, 06:15 PM Yeah, it can be frustrating... I ventured into the ranked matches yesterday...Needless to say I went 4 games before I had a kill.... It was nuts how fast I was getting killed. :(
virtual-human 12-31-06, 07:25 AM Ranked matches have a different feel to them. The patterns are a little more rigid as people know the absolute best strategies and are practiced at executing them quickly. There also seem to be specialists at particular maps, so for example, if you don't play canals a lot and you run into somebody who does, say goodbye.
You also get people working on particular weapon achievements, so you might run into a situation where it seems like there's an unstoppable guy on Rooftops with the Hammer because he's already done that board 20 times in a row with the HoD and has it down to a science.
As for the shotgun, the first thing I would make a note of, is who is the host. They are going to win a toe-to-toe shotgun battle the majority of the time. If there's lag, off-host battles are also a roll of the dice at best. In these situations, and with taggers, the best bet is to stay at a medium distance and try to drop them with the lancer, or doubleteam if possible. Also, the pistol works pretty well against the shotgun. Again, shoot from a medium range, and if they close, melee them.
Rakesh.S 12-31-06, 04:26 PM I've also been in games where guys are whining and threatening to ban over -
a) frag tags.
b) when it's 3 on 1, the guy starts running away because he doesn't want to get toasted. I don't blame him at all. Instead, guys are calling him a pussy and threatening to boot him, which is just dumb. If it's 3 on 1, and you can't kill one guy, that's your fault.

That is ridiculous. When we get tired of frags we just remove them to change things up a bit. Then the frag taggers usually whine because they suck without frags.
That happened to my brother in law the other night. It was his first night to play and they were harrassing him. The funny thing is the guys talking trash always died first and they were whining in the death lobby.
If that thing is a Female then I would hate to see the Male!!:)
She is the female Locust. Yes, all the others are male, and to procreate, they have to have sex with the Berserker.
As Ron White says, "Good Luck!".
My personal hell with this game are the stupid Lambent Wretches. I hate those things! On insane, they are frickin' impossible solo. Everything I have little problems with. But those wretches. Oooo, I hate 'em. Good job Epic!

had to be frugal and get best prices on the 360 stuff as i spent over 3k on new tv.
i did get the hddvd drive for super redic cheap though off someone.
lover GOW but what other games are worth it.
highest rated by ign seem to be Rainbow Six Vegas but i'm a little tired of RS and the review said the graphics are a little fuzzy so that turns me off a little but meanwhile its one of hte highest rated games. again by ign but usually if htey have it high all other erviews do also give or take a point. best thing is avg of the main review sites/mags.
also Ghost REcon advanced warfighter but thts another tom clancy and i'm not too excited to get that either.
i' interested in what 1080p games there are as my tv is 1080p. only one i know of is Sonic though and dont thin its that great but might get it just for 1080pYou really shouldn't buy games because of their resolution or framerate. Because it really doesn't matter. I bet you would be surptised to learn that Gears of War is 720p. Resolution really doesnt seem to mean a whole lot in games.

The good thing is that they are not ever present and as tiring as the flood became in Halo 1. They are there in small numbers in some of the game except the one act where they are really really annoying especially because of their volatile nature which every game seemingly has now, which I do blame on halo (although there were likely games with exploding enemies before that).
