I have a question about NFS. According to TViX and most all users, NFS is recommended because there are performance issues on streaming HD content over Samba shares. TViX provides the win32 NetShare program which I assume is their free NFS server implementation. Do other NFS servers work just as well... i.e. NAS appliance or NFS share from some unix server?

I'm using mine with an Infrant ReadyNAS and it works great for both SD and HD videos. I simply turned on my NAS’s NFS option and I'm having no problems running HD files. :)

Since several people have asked, If I get a chance tonight, I will try running a few DVD and HD files via Samba and see if there are any performance issues.

That will be good to hear of the samba streaming. Thank you.

FYI - I've started a new thread with common M-4000U / M-5000U questions here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=792728

Most of the questions being asked/answered here are very much applicable to both products and both sets of users could benefit. We could also avoid a lot of cross posting by using a common thread.

But - questions related specifically to one device or another could/should remain in the specifc threads (such as the network issues with a small number of M-4000U units).

Thanks... Thread can be found here:

I have just received my tvix , cant do full tests yet, but did a test running a wifi bridge via my mac , and streamed mp3, isos no problem over samba, vobs stuttered but may be ok when i get my devolo dlan 200mb.

So Far, Does what I wanted plays dvds from my nas over samba, will report when i get network over power sorted.

I have a large iTunes collection on my Nas, and dont want that to change as its access by various machines etc etc, But is there a way to create a playlist for the tvix 4000 to read to make it nicer to navigate or is this it ? If there is a way can someone point me to the correct articles, threads etc Please

Your Help is very very much appreciated.

Does this require a 3.5" hdd or a normal size one?

Nitemage
01-24-07, 09:31 AM
Actually, a 3.5" hard drive is a standard hard drive. 2.5" hard drives are used in laptops.

Anyways, the M-4000 uses a standard 3.5" hard drive. There are currently 2 models of the M-4000. One uses a serial ATA hard drive and one a uses parallel ATA hard drive. Currently, only the one that uses parallel ATA hard is available in the US.

The Tvix supports Winamp M3U format playlists. I don't know if iTunes can save M3U files, but certainly Winamp does. The format of M3U files is pretty basic at its simplest-- basically just a list of filenames. If you are comfortable with the Windows command prompt, just going into a directory and typing the command "dir /b *.mp3>Playlist.m3u" would create a simple playlist called Playlist.m3u for the files in a folder-- you could do this while the TVIX was attached by USB. You could then take this in notepad and reedit the list of files to different playlists. These playlists would need to stay in the folder with the MP3 files since they wouldn't be specifying path information, so don't move them to another folder.

There are extended EXTINF properties for M3U files, which allow you to show more information than just the file name, but I am not positive TVIX supports these. An interesting feature is that you can include Winamp Shoutcast internet radio stations in the M3U files and they will play.

Here's more info on the M3U file format, including how to specify file paths if you want to incorporate files from more than one folder:

It's listed in the M4000 PDF documentation (pp 40-41) on the TVIX site that it supports Winamp M3Us and Shoutcast stations. Other information is just what I've picked up from using Winamp and reading the winamp site. Winamp support actually makes more sense than iTunes support, since a large percentage of iTunes material has AAC and Digital Rights Management that the Tvix wouldn't be able to play.

Just so everyone knows, the printed 4000 manual is missing the entire page relating to the shoutcast stuff. Also, the winamp stuff is not in audio where one might expect it to be, but under the play music with background pictures. I haven't undertaken to compare the online manual with the printed one to see if anything else is missing. I also haven't tried the shoutcast stuff, so I can't say if it was intentional or not.

IMHO - yes

There appear to be isolated cases of hardware issues relating to the network interface.

I have some strangeness when playing back IFO/VOB rips (i.e. they don't work), and my ISO rips all work, but don't start from the beginning. However, since i don't have a 5000, i have nothing to compare it against, so, it's probably common to both the 5000 and 4000.

I would like to remind people once again...for those of you about to buy one...that to me these are only isolated incidences, mine works perfect full speed on my network, no problems playing any files. It's like a bad restaurant you always remember them but the ones that are OK kind of pass by. Same here people are trying to resolve their problems with our help, which is the way it should be, but this makes the thread sound like these units are seriously flawed which isn't the case.

Isolated would be one or two and there was more than that. I do love the unit and am holding on to my 10/half unit until Digital Connections has more in stock. Both TViX and DC have been great about this and would have promptly refunded my money had I asked.

i've seen the TViX M-4000U on eBay a couple of times recently with buy-it-now at about the same price as DC is offering them for ($250 shipped). bought one myself yesterday because i didn't want to wait until the end of february for stock at DC.

this is my 3rd video player, after the Tvix M-3000 and MediaGate MG-35 on a home network. the older Tvix is pretty good - i like the remote and video compatibility is good - but of course it lacks any kind of network features. the MG-35 is decent for network playback but has a crappy remote, less tolerance for various dvix/xvid encodes, and it has an annoying trait where it logs out of the network after ~1 minute of inactivity in the GUI (& you can't disable that AFAIK).

i wanted HD playback and the USB host ports found on the new model. i have a 4-bay USB hard drive enclosure (2TB) that i hope will work with it. this should be more power efficient than leaving a PC turned on for access to the same files.

i only wish it could handle videos with GMC & QPEL enabled but i understand that's not possible with the current video decoder chip. also, H.264 video playback would be nice, with support for OGM and MKV containers, and 5CH AAC audio tracks... but there doesn't seem to be anything out there yet with these things (aside from full fledged HTPC) so the M-4000 will have to do for now.

thanks for all the helpful tips in this thread! looking forward to my new toy :)

I am browsing this thread and thinking about getting this unit since it does exactly what I need (just want to stream content and don't need a HTPC).

I wanted to pass along a great deal I saw today. 500 GB HD for $139. Might be nice to plug into this device.

As an aside-- if anyone is interested in setting up wireless for the device and has an inclination to getting in up to your elbows...

There's a discontinued programmable Motorola WR850G router available through 3btech.net for $27.99 with free shipping. It's possible to load this thing up with DD-WRT (a Linux-based enhanced firmware) and set it up as a wireless client bridge to an existing wireless network-- fundamentally the same thing as a wireless gaming adapter. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a gaming adapter and a lot more versatile. If you can do wired networking I would, but if you can't this is a good option for wireless.

I had tried that method on my Linksys WRT54GS and found it was incompatible.

However, it seems to work very well for others if you get the older model.

The solution I found was I went looking for a bridge from Linksys WET54G

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1134692497433&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

I couldn't find one but I did find a gaming adapter which is just a bridge (WGA54G)

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416826619&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

I set it up and connected it to my Denon 4306 receiver and it works fine. I would think any wireless bridge or the DD-WRT hack will work.

I just wanted to report that my 4000 is now hooked up with a direct 25 foot cable to the router, then through a switching brige into the 4000. This way I was able to verify from the switching bridge that the unit is in fact working properly (full 100 mode).

Using netshare I was able to stream hd from the PC (Dixie Chicks from Austin City Limits). My PC is fairly old; so running anything else on the PC caused the 4000 to stutter. Also, playing back files on the 4000 from the hard drive while doing the ftp slowed the transfer by about half.

Anybody know how to figure out whether the original file is 1080i or 720p or ?? It sure looks good using the dvi-hdmi adaptor into the Sony LCD at 1080p.

It looks like this unit works much better with the Linksys Wireless A/G game adaptor than the 5000.

I am not sure I love netshare, as it forces one to pick a specific folder. But it clearly works.

I just added my M-4000P to my Harmony 659, which is one of the older models, so it should probably work on any of the models.

I selected: Add Device, Music Player, Digital Music Server, Dvico
The example model displayed "TViX HD M-5000A", so it probably does that one too. I entered "TViX HD M-4000P" and it took it.

In my initial testing, the repeat or speed is off a bit because unless I press and release buttons very fast, they are received as double presses. ie: pressing down with a normal press once will move the cursor down twice. There are settings in the logitec software to compesate, so I'll try that sometime this weekend.

Splotto,

I've been unable to do the NetShare NFS across my DD-WRT wireless bridge from the M4000 to my PC's share, but it works fine on a wired netork. SMB works fine.

I have been curious whether the gaming bridge has the same limitation, and would like to hear from you when you get your device. Also would be curious to hear whether the "arp -a" command after your pc has accessed the device on the far side of your gaming bridge shows the MAC address of the bridge or the device's ethernet interface. Just trying to figure out what might work differently.

I plugged in my Linksys wireless B game adapter into it and Netshare works fine. It's pretty slow, on an FTP tranfer I only get about 250KB/s as opposed to 1700KB/s with a wire (it's a 100/10 router). I have streamed some decent resolution content without trouble though, even one file that professed to be an HD video sample. I'm sort of confused by the speed of the wired connection. It seems to incdicate that I don't have the half duplex issue, but my network is terrible.

Greetings everyone,
Well, as you can see by my many numbers of posts, this crowd continues to build with yet another new member to avsforum. Please forgive me and allow me a little latitude while I briefly sidetrack from the thread, even though my comments are really not off track very far at all. I am happy to join tonight, because last night I was able to finish setting up my first-ever Streamer system. The end result was “pushing the play button” and watching a movie. Seems like I was doing this “play button thing” many years ago, but this time it was done using the remote control of the TVIX M-4000P and an ISO file –streamed- from the also new ReadyNAS. After several weeks of reading the posts here at AVS, I want to sincerely thank all of you guys-n-girls who post and who are the community. I am continuously swamped and have little time for this great hobby, but I am hoping to squeeze in a little time for posting so I can return the favor of sharing information and streaming solutions. This thing started out because of my 2 kids scratching & ruining a few DVD’s, then it turned into a desire for backups, then it slowly turned into better ideas thanks to dreaming and the forum here.

Despite isolated reports about (HD) video performance and/or limited network speed of the TVIX 4000, I am happy to say that initial testing of the M-4000P seems like my player is fine. I am not able to (currently) accurately measure the network speed nor am I able to stream any HD files because I do not have any. This topic is one of many that I need to learn more about because I am streaming DVD ISO files, (480i-?, Low-res?) yet I am unsure how to measure these files compared to streaming HD (720-1080) files. I do not capture HD or have any TS/TP files, so I can’t test this yet. I plan to beg, borrow or download an HD file so I can (visually) verify if my 4000 has the reported bandwidth curse or not. I just loaded the application “iometer” because of an interest to test a Jumbo-Frames issue, but iometer is not ready for a novice like me with only a few minutes to spare. Times up, gotta go. Cheers!

if for some reason i am not happy with the streamers video chips, can i connect the unit to an external scaler such as dvdo or lumagen? if so, does this unit output 480i via hdmi?

Since the device has no DVD drive, it doesn't deal with CSS encryption or Macrovision. Any DVDs have to be processed using DVD Decrypter or similar utilities to have CSS and Macrovision removed from the VOB files prior to playing.

As to the question of HDMI, this device only has a DVI connection... you might want to check the manual. As to its ability to play files off the local disk, it does fine at 720P and often at 1080P-- stuttering is primarily a concern for streamed content, so it's questionable that the processor is the problem. I can't imagine that an external scaler could upscale a 480i signal to anything approaching that quality, but I don't know much about it.

Unfortunately, the SIGMA video chip does not support 480i via HDMI/DVI. However, if you have by any chance a DVDO VP50 you could use the PReP feature.

In any case I would also appreciate comments concerning PQ on a large display/screen from somebody who has done a direct comparison between a high quality DVD player (SDI?) or HTPC and a TVIX4000/5000.

I am still toying with the idea of getting a 4000 to replace my HTPC. However I am worried that I would be disappointed by the PQ in my set up (HTPC with TT+ffdshow, DVDO, VP50, Sony Ruby, 110' Firehawk).

Thanks!

side-tracked question

I recently received my brand new Tvix M4000 from DigitalConnection, so kei thank you very much for the same. In the setup menu, there are four options on the left-most tab namely

A/V
Misc
Network
HDTV
Exit

In the user manual for M4000, explanation for first three has been provided, however, there is no discussion/help section for the fourth one 'HDTV'. This option is always greyed out for me (even though i have a 32" Samsung LCD HDTV connected to M4000 via DVI cables). Any ideas on what 'HDTV' option allows to configure? and if so, why mine would not be working?

It's greyed out for me too. I suspect that this is the setup for the ATSC HDTV tuner option that is planned for the TVIX M5xxxx and the M4030 models. Remember that this firmware is for more than just the M4000.

look in the manual and these threads for folder.jpg and TViX.jpg. Depending on your firmware, you can replace the icons for folders and files with icons of your own (folder.jpg, folder.png, filename.jpg, 100x136), and you can replace the default wallpaper for any folder (TViX.jpg, 720x480). Changing the icons requires also adding a file tvix.icon to the folder. The tvix.icon file can be (must be?) blank, so just create one with notepad if you're a Windows user.
Be warned however that there is (or was, if new firmware fixed it) a limit of only the first 31 icons loaded will be displayed. After those, the icon will not be your custom one, but will be the generic one. I haven't seen it myself, as I only use the icons for folders directly off the Video folder - one each for Movies, Television, Kids, Music Videos, Podcasts.
Also note that the filesystem on the TViX is case sensitive, so when you name files, the case must be correct. ie: TVix.jpg = good, tvix.jpg = bad.

There is a poster Crivens that is/was designing an app called TWAD (Google TWAD + TVIX) that may help you create wallpaper with minimal typing, but I haven't heard recent status on this app.

I'm also creating an app to do this for myself, but since I don't know when I'll be done, I'm not gonna say much beyond that.

luck to ya.

I think we all wish for a UI with cover art for most files. We need a stream-lined way (almost anyway) to do cover art for each movie and album. This topic in itself could be & should be its' own thread. (scattered posts here and in the 5000 thread about this topic.) For the moment, talking about movie files, there are 2 camps and maybe more. 1st,- Those people doing individual Folders with IFO/VOB's (I agree CrashX, what a pain, the UI needs to be better for our non-tech friends & family) then 2nd, -those of us using 1 folder with many ISO's inside it. Anyone know how, or know someone who is working on how to display cover art for each ISO inside one folder? Many thanks for any leads and.... a new thread for this common 4000/5000 topic should be approaching?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but it is already possible to have icons for each ISO file in a folder.
The "31 file limit" mentioned above is corrected.
Also there are some errors in CrashX's post.
Background picture shall be named: tvix.jpg
The file to trigger icon mode in a folder shall be named: icon.tivx
Then just name the icons as the ISOs.
I.e. TheRock.iso shall have the corresponding TheRock.jpg or .png
CrashX is correct in that file naming is case sensitive.

Then again, maybe you meant a method/program on how to retreive and name all the icons properly?

No, you got it it right jofa, the problem was mostly just me not reading or reviewing all the posts. <-I accidently skipped some -Blush> Thanks for the reply and the slap in the head, I needed it. I look forward to using this technique and setting up some ISO file cover art icons to see it in action. I already have questions and concerns, but I think I should do some tweeks-n-work first, before sticking my foot in the mouth twice in a row. I will post back in a few days with results. Thanks again!

I just bought a Tvix 4000p and installed a 500 gig drive formatted Fat 32 because I mostly use a Macintosh. I also use a PC. I installed firmware upgrade Ver. 2.0.5. l loaded videos, photos and audios via USB. Divx and mpg videos play ok. FTP works ok. I do not try to stream. I play files directly from the internal drive. Please give advice on the following:

1) My Tvix 4000p will not play ISO videos. It shows a blank screen after I select and press Play. I know these ISO videos are good because they play with no problems on my son's Tvix 3100. I have a great many ISO videos and it is very important to be able to play them.

2) Tvix 4000p will not display many of my .jpg photos. It will display some and not others. All my photos display well on my IBM PC and Mac. Also I cannot disable the slideshow feature even though it is off in setup.

3) Tvix 4000p will not play many of my mp3 audio files. It plays some but not others. All my mp3 files play fine on Mac and PC.

I also tried firmware Ver. 1.9.5 with the same results. I then reinstalled Ver. 2.0.5 and it did not make a difference, same problems. I need to know if this unit is defective or if anyone has suggestions to solve these problems. The ISOs not playing is really most important to me.

Thanks so much for any info.

I'm having two major problems with "Saving Private Ryan" (speacial limited edition)

1) The audio isn't in synch with the video files and I really don't know how to fix that problem.

2) For some reason only with this movie I can't seem to fast forward.

I'm using a program by the name of AOA DVD Ripper, it's worked great with other movies such as "The Matrix" and "Pirates of the Carribean". I'm also ripping only the main movie into an .AVI (Xvid) format, just as I did with the other movies. Could anyone help please?

I have a transport stream that I captured off Discovery HD. It plays fine with VLC on my PC. I copied it to the internal hard drive on the 4000U. When I play it, I don't get any audio. The audio is AC3. I am using the optical connection to my receiver. I have another high definition .ts file captured from PBS that plays fine without any audio problems. I tried using HDTV2MPEG, Video Redo, and MPEG VCR to convert the problem file from transport stream to program stream. I still don't get audio with any of them. If I use an editor to convert resulting MPEG to a file with MPEG audio instead of AC3, I get audio on the TViX.

I checked the thread with the 4000/5000 feature requests and bug lists. It does talk about an audio problem with some transport streams that people have been able to work around by creating an ISO to make a pseudo-DVD. Has anyone tried that for HD content? Can the TViX recognize an HD-DVD ISO?

Does anyone have suggestions for how I can get this file to play? I figure with lossy compression every time I do something to the file I loose quality, so I'd like to be able to play something as close to the original transport stream as possible.

Thanks!

Joe

JoeLinn;

Is your file a .ts or a .tp? If it is .ts; try renaming it to .tp and see what happens.

How did you capture it? I can't directly capture discovery hd on my dvico fusion card with time warner/comcast (the network changed recently from time warner to comcast).

It is a ts file. I captured it with capDVHS. I tried renaming it to .tp and it wouldn't play at all. Other .ts files that I have captured the same way work fine. This one gives me video but not sound.

No.

I've submitted a request to them twice for an NFS server implementation.
You can see my post about this here:

It would REALLY help if a lot of people started making this type of request on the dvico website. It's totally in their best interest to have that type of functionality - they'll definitely sell more units!

capDVHS sounds like an interesting product. I suspect something just went wrong with your particular transfer. Maybe you should try it again if the original is still on the cable box.

This discussion is interesting. I have been looking for some method to transfer files digitally from my HD cable box (Scientific Atlanta 8300HD on comcast) to the PC. I did not think such a thing existed. But maybe this software will work. I think my box has firewire; but I am not sure if it is enabled. Just got the M-4000 yesterday. Using 1.9.8A firmware.

1) I don't see the point of selecting Video, Audio or Photo in the Main Menu since you can see and play all file types when browsing through your file structures

2) Network support is not what I expected. Instead of being able to simply browse all nodes/files on the network, you have to setup specific folders as shared (limited to 4) and only those are visible. Yes, you can map more drives to one folder on the host PC but it's a PITA compared to my MG-35 which doesn't need any such setup. On the MG-35 it finds all the PCs in my network and I can browse through all the shared folders on those PCs. Plus on the MG-35 the video/audio/photo filters actually work.

3) I intended to use a 4-bay USB drive with the USB Host port on the TViX. But it only recognizes the first 2 drives.

4) Audio playback is... minimal, to say the least. You select the file to play.. and it plays... and nothing else. No song info, no track time, not even a track progress bar!

5) One of my AVIs causes the TViX to reboot every time I try and play it. Most play normally though, including some that don't on the MG-35.

6) I don't like how the Left button works on the remote when browsing through files/folders. While the Right button works to a select file or enter directory, left puts you in the drive select area instead of backing up one folder level. You have to use the Stop/Return button, below the arrow keys, to go back one folder level. I'm getting used to it but it doesn't seem logical to me.

It does play high def Xvid's fine, and FLAC... but I really wanted the 4-bay drive to work with this thing. Anyone using something similar with another player..?

edit: the 4-bay USB drive is the AMS VENUS T4U DS-2340UBK, available from Newegg for ~$130.

i still think that none of these products are ready for "prime time". i really want to buy one now, but every single server i have read about (all the threads) seems to exhibit problems that are just not acceptable at the moment. i really think these companies should start using better quality parts, doing more research and testing and if need be, ask more for these peices to justify the added expenses. seriously, not 1 product right now is capable of offering error free operation. firware updates are great, but they should be simply to fix :minor" bugs, not fix the entire player to do what it was advertised to do, but didn't do it properly. if a product says it can stream hd files or even iso files off a nas, then it better damn do it. i don't want to buy a product and wait for the firmware to make it possible to do what it was advertised to do and the reason why i bought it. oh well, hopefully this new year products will be bettered and these downfalls will be fixed. the future looks impressive for these products, once they are ironed out, i think it is the way of the future. just my 2 cents on the whole server issue, i still feel that the tvix offers much more than the competition.

Using Comcast here without the cable box.

My HP LCD TV downstairs has a cable card in it and a firewire run to my PC upstairs. Using Girder to control the TV via serial and start VLC by executing a simple script it captures HD movies on a schedule. Girder powers off the TV after the recording has started, the TV's firewire ports remain active once VLC has initiated a capture. All you need is the JVC D-VHS driver so your PC can recognize your TV/Cablebox/etc. (Its a little tricky, at least for me, the installation has been slightly different every time and requires some trial and error sometimes)

It is a beautiful thing really :) Once a recording is begun it uses about 2% CPU on an Athlon 3700.

splotto: from the file/folder view screen, you navigate to a folder with audio files in it, choose one and press play. the file starts playing. the file/folder view screen does not change or offer any info about the current track (other than the file name you selected, obviously).

when that track is over, it moves to the next one down in the list.

don't know about any play mode or playlist options yet...

I submitted a request to the TViX group for the M-4000 to support more than 2 storage devices per USB Host port. I would like it be able to address 4 devices per port so that all 4 hard drives in my 4-bay USB Enclosure (AMS VENUS T4U DS-2340UBK) are recognized and available through the GUI.

http://tvix.co.kr/ENG/Boards/MyQA.aspx?act=RD&id=2949&pg=1

I seriously doubt they'll bother with it, considering the few people it would benefit, but hey it's worth a shot...

edit: another possible solution would be to JBOD the 4 drives into one or two virtual drives using the jumper settings on the back of the AMS Venus. but my drives are already full of video and I'm worried that joining them now might somehow screw up the data. anyone know if it is safe to do so?

No time for a detailed report, but here is some good news. My use and testing of the Tvix 4000P so far has; not used an internal Hard-Drive; not used any HD content; and not used an attached USB storage device.

My initial goal for the 4000P was to stream (kids) movies without the need/pain of DVD disks. I have ripped most of my kids disks using AnyDVD/CloneDVD and into -->> .ISO files. The iso files are stored & hosted on a new ReadyNAS. Initial testing was good with the 4000P video output set on Composite. Changed output to 780P, and connected via Component video cables, everything was good. Connected via DVI (used plug adapter for HDMI cable to TV), set to 1080i, and everything was good. Analog and Optical audio outputs also checked out good. Did not check Coax Audio output yet. I am sure I had Dolby sound running OK, but I have not yet taken the time to fire up a movie rip iso with DTS. With the DVD rips being low res (Standard Definition right?), I have no idea what the 4000P is doing while in 1080i output mode, while playing back this DVD ripped content… with regard to any UPCONVERT, if anything? I look forward to learning/surfing/reading more about this though…. (my TV is 1080i native/capable.)

I was able to setup my tvixhd1/video movie folder with DVD label art (Cdcovers.cc), with icons that match the movie file… Very nice, but I wish I could show fewer icons on screen at one time, instead of the “10 at a time” which makes for some small icons. My 3 year-old kid and I struggle to see the movie icons, and identify one from another movie. It would be better for us if we could display 4 or 6 (then LARGER right?) icons, instead of 10 at a time. Thanks for the help on learning how to get icons working Jofa (thanks avsforum).

Today, I successfully setup my new Panasonic HD PLC’s into the rig. Streaming my digital content “from room-A” into “room-B” without wireless and without direct-connect CAT5 wire is really-really cool. I am looking forward to testing with some HD content soon, maybe next weekend. Anyone know of a site that has some (short, test use, .ts or .tp) HD files for download? Cheers, -Marty

I reckon that you would not get any better performance from other makes. Most of the media players now on the market are based on the Sigma processor, and Linux as their operating system.

NFS is well supported by Linux, and any decent NAS device (also running Linux in most cases) would support NFS. Linux also supports Windows shares through a package called Samba (SMB+NMB), however its implementation may be limited on these mediaplayer boxes that in general have minimal RAM (64MBytes average) and a not so fast processor (120-250MHz).

I am in the UK and I have purchased one last week which arrived Friday. I spent a good time during the week-end to enjoy this box.

I had purchased previously a Freecom MP-35 that I have returned because of its
poor video quality and the lack of High Definition support despite its component video HD output.

I would have liked the 5000 model, however it was too ugly and too difficult to match with my AV systems. The 4000 fits fairly well in the "look" context.

The tvix came with 1.9.5 firmware that had shown some stuttering in HighDef. Upgraded to 2.0.9A and now it plays like a charm.

No problem with the network that runs at 100 Mbit/s as specified.

The only real issue is around the lack of network disk acess services. The FTP implementation works only if you configure your FTP client to open only one connection at a time. More connections and the server will die.

I really would like to see the internal drive shared via NFS or SAMBA. With that, it would be PERFECT.

Well, here's the response from TViX about my request to support more than 2 drives per USB Host port...

"I regret to say that we do not have any plans to support more than two USB drives. If you want to attach more than two drives, you better connect it to PC and share it or you can use NAS devices."

I expected as much but it's still disappointing to hear. If the M-4000 can recognize 2 drives per port, it shouldn't take much effort to increase that number to 4.

The whole point of my request is so that I don't have to run a PC or NAS just to access a simple multi-drive array.

Hi Kei,

Excellent news!

The video problem that I was referring to was one that a few people remarked about - where the image was shifted on the 4000, but was fine with the 5000 using the same setting.

Since you probably sold more 4000's than anyone else - if you are unfamiliar with this issue, it's more than likely it is a non-issue...

Just got my 4000P in the UK using Pixmania - A French company that distributes here.

A few things to be aware of if you use these guys:

1. If buying with an internal hard drive, you will need to format the drive yourself. Most disks these days come pre-formatted and the manual makes this assumption too. This caused a problem as the 4000 did not show up as a drive when I plugged in in over USB, just as "removable media" (even over the IDE interface on my desktop!) so formatting was not simple. The trick in Windows is to use Computer Management -> Disk Management, and format the drive from there. The manual does explain how to do this but states you only need to do it for win2k.

2. Minor issue (since the manuals are available on the DViCO site) but check that your unit is despatched with the correct manual (mine was the French version).

Otherwise, the unit so far is very impressive - great build quality and very quiet.

I have yet to see it perform but will be doing that once I'm home tonight so I'll post some more thoughts later.

Can you start playing audio files and audio playlists without turning on the TV?
Does the alpha-numeric display show enough to navigate the directories on the

It would be a pain to have to turn on the TV just to kick off listening to music.
I don't need it to be beautiful, just functional.

It does cover all of those topics quite clearly. You can create a file to start a playlist automatically if you want. The display does show enough info to navigate but you would have to wait for long files names to scroll to the left to see what your looking at most likely.

For example if you have MP3 named as ARTIST - SONG.mp3 then you will only see the name of the artist until it starts to scroll.

I'm considering exchanging my TVIX M-4000P for the MB100.

TVIX Cons for me:
Takes forever to boot up with the newest firmware, about 1 minute.

RW/FF control is shoddy at best, you can find yourself suddenly at the end of the currently playing file or it freezes and requires a reboot..

Construction - it feels like a hollow 5oz peice of cheap plastic, the front interface buttons are extremely flimsy (they look great in the picture but in person the parts look and feel like they come from those vending machines that dispense the little plastic containers holding a prize lol)

Green sparkles using DVI-HDMI at 720p, 1080i (Its not the cable, the issue worsed ALOT after upgrading the firmware but is not worth bothering with considering the rest of my issues)

The fan, while not extremely loud, is as cheap as the rest of it and has rattled and clicked from the first time I powered it on. It sounds more like the fan on my wife's video card did after about 4 years

The remote is frequently non-responsive or the units sensor is poorly placed/narrow vision. Quite often I have to reboot the unit several times to get the remote working with it. Oddly enough, the power button on the remote works every time when this happens but NONE of the other buttons will evoke a response from the unit.
A friend was not impressed by this issue when I tried to demo the video quality for him. I must have rebooted it 6 times that time, even changed the batteries in the remote.

I should mention the M-4000 did not have any network issues.

The MB100 Pros:
Has all of the capabilities of the TVIX and more (as it probably should, it costs more)

Much better build quality, although the form factor of M-4000 is better for my tastes.

The GUI is much more attractive both visually and otherwise, it will display total/current track time for MP3s, for example.

Does not have an LCD display like TVIX, which I consider a plus.

Has HDMI AND it sends digital audio over HDMI :)

Has no fan, therefore no noise.

Any cons the MB100 has are the same any other HD streamer has and I can live with that.

Please keep us posted about your findings with the MB100. From what I have read it is a very nice unit, at least h/w wise. Downside has been the firmware, which is supposedly not as mature as the one for the TVIX.

awake33 - sounds like you have quite a few issues. Out of curiosity... was this one of the original batches or a newer shipment? Not that I've heard of any changes to the hardware itself (with the exception of verifying the ethernet interface is good).

From your post, it sounds like a dismal p.o.s. But, from other posts, the unit sounds like a good choice - look, quality, hardware, & software. Well, my order is in route, so I'll have a first-hand opinion soon:)

I will say, it seems that quite a few of your issues are software/firmware related. One of the main factors in me choosing the TViX 4000 is the frequency of their firmware releases and their receptiveness to customer feedback/issues.

Just heard back from DVICO that each M4000P was tested for LAN speed on this shipment. They found that the faulty models can be fixed with a replacement EPROM so we can repair defective units at our office.

Will you be fixing units that were previously RMA'd to you? I might be interested in picking up a refurb :)

Thanks.

Hi there. First post for me!! These might be some obvious questions but I have tried to look for answers.

This does seem like the perfect unit for me as all I want to do is backup all my dvds (300+) to ISO files onto an external 2TB USB 2.0 HD and then connect that to the M-4000U and enjoy the full DVD with digital audio via DVI on my HDTV. My questions are mostly based on the fact that I am Mac user and I want to make sure this will all work with a Mac. I will first of all buy the external HD and load all the ISO files on that and then I will connect to the M-4000.

Will this work?
What external HD do I need or do you recommend?
What format (Fat32?) will I need to choose to make it talk with the Mac and the M-4000?
What is the directory structure I need to implement on the HD so the M-4000 finds the ISO files?

I hope someone can answer these simple questions. If this all works I will be extremely happy.

Thanks in advance.

does anybody know if the Lacie external hard drives are compatible?

EDIT: I forgot to mention in my lists of cons:
Sparkles not withstanding, the M-4000 produces a clean picture and does not struggle with HD .ts files, however it seems to to a very poor job with contrast/black levels. It makes both my LCD TVs look much worse at handling blacks that they really are.

I pre-ordered it in Nov. from Digital Connection.

After browsing the Pixel Magic forums I am satisfied that they are working on regular updates to firmware as well. Many posts with questions from users were answered the same day.

I love my Tvix never had one problem...weird. Anyway, awake33, you say the MB100 has more capabilities what are they, it looks like they're the same...just curious.

The main feature that attracted me is the HDMI port which also carries digital audio. I consider the missing fan an option as well, it has an aluminum chassis for convection cooling (and of course much sturdier build quality). The GUI is much more attractive both visually and otherwise, it will display total/current track time for MP3s, for example.

I'm sure the MB100 will lock up if you try FF/RW, seems all these streamers do that to one degree or another. Intially it didn't bother me with the M-4000 as long as it would play a whole movie, which it would always do without ever freezing. But the fan, remote, and sparkling issues are too much.

BOYCOTT tvix!!!

I have contacted tivx's support about two issues. The first is the availability of their source code. The answer was "we do not release our code".

The second was a request to implement a file sharing service (either NFS or SAMBA) to overcome the limitation of the FTP service.

The answer was that they do not have plans to implement any of these services in their firmware.

I have replied again asking to reconsider, due to the strong community demand for a decent network integration requiring to share the tvix internal drive.

Here I CALL TO BOYCOTT further purchases of tvix products in order to make tvix hear the strong voice of their customers community.

Please, support this initiative, either getting in touch with tvix making the same demand to provide an internal drive share through NFS or SAMBA, if you have already a tvix device, or by putting on hold any planned purchase.

splotto: from the file/folder view screen, you navigate to a folder with audio files in it, choose one and press play. the file starts playing. the file/folder view screen does not change or offer any info about the current track (other than the file name you selected, obviously).

when that track is over, it moves to the next one down in the list.

don't know about any play mode or playlist options yet...

really, they couldn't have put less effort into the audio playback.

Hello:

That is very disappointing.

I am not really interested in playing videos with this device. I am really just looking for a device to allow me to play audio/mp3 files through my HT system.

Rather then build (or retire) a PC to become a media server I was hoping that some dedicated device could fit the bill.

Right now it looks like my iPod connected to my Denon is the easiest solution if this device can't create playlists, shuffle songs, etc.

You are boycotting a company because their hardware won't support NFS or Samba server? I too asked for NFS server, and got the same response. They must have some issue that they can't overcome with the current hardware. I can understand why they won't do Samba server as it's a MUCH larger piece of code than nfsd. Anyway, it wasn't an advertised feature, so i don't know what you are complaining about.

As for your complaint about source, why should they release their source? They are using GPL software on their box, and they will release that software and any mods they made to it as per the GPL license, but they are under no obligation to release their proprietary, non GPL source. Did they ever state that THEIR code is under GPL?

As far as i'm concerned, the tvix device i have works as advertised and they've been busy making it better.

What i'd really like is to be able to port my own binaries to the box... or run them off of an attached device like i do with my NSLU2... now that would be hot.

I'm converting a movie "The Incredibles" into an AVI format right off of the disc using a software by the name of AOA DVDRIPPER. It's worked great in the past and hasn't given me any trouble till now really but... When i got to copy the movie about 10 minutes in (second chapter or something) the movie records the second chapter and then continues to repeat this process till it fullfills the time limit of the movie. The disc is virtually perfectly clean aswell.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening??

I will be & I have been guilty of going a little "off topic" or "off-thread" previously, but I would like to kindly ask that you review your post and realize that it is outside & off-topic of this M-4000 thread. Your question has no direct connection to this M-4000 thread. Please re-direct your questions to a new or another thread that is discussing rip software and rip problems.

This one? <http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=794752>

If I had an answer or help to your problem, I would try to help right now. However, keeping off-thread for a second, I can only wonder why you are ripping from content/source-A into AVI format. AVI’s are fat and juicy, but why use them in this world of video streaming?… other than if the AVI’s are your original source of video? << That was actually a bit rhetorical >>

However, I did like the idea of being able to drop a new CD into that player and rip the music right there.

I got mine from digitalconnection.com. I have not gone back to find/re-read POSTS about fan noise. I remember a post or two about fan noise, but I am guessing it is an issolated -or- small -or- fixed issue? I had no idea there were people like you "on the fence" because of a fan issue and waiting for Mfr/Dealer/Consumer reports that "it is fixed". Hmmm? FYI- I have a 4000 from the "first batch" and it has NO fan noise issue. I am also looking forward to purchasing another 4000 soon. Just buy one man, you won't be sorry. I do understand your caution, because it would really suck to get a 4000 that has an issue that was "known about"... (?).... I bet you get one and it will be fine. Good luck.

If someone has knowledge about the original problem, or more importantly, about a known FIX, -or- a hardware change that Tvix has/will make to the 4000 fan, please chime in.

UPDATE: I wish I would have searched/read this thread BEFORE my reply above. Based on Kei Clarks comments in mid-December, it seems the fan noise issue was fixed prior to the "first batch" of 4000P's to (California) digitalconnection.com. It seems like the fan noise issue (never was) is no longer a concern for us.

Apparently my unit was overlooked somehow during this process, the clicking fan which is also too loud for my liking even when it is not clicking is one of the reasons I'm exchanging it.

Hey everybody,

After reading a *bunch* of forum posts here and elsewhere, I decided on buying a M-4000P back in the beginning of January. Even though I would've liked to order from DigitalConnection due to Kei's active involvement in the community (which means a lot to me), I went with TvixBox since they actually had a few in stock and weren't back ordered. (Sorry, Kei, I was impatient.) The guys at TvixBox were quick to reply to emails and questions, although all the replies came back from personal email addresses in domain names not obviously related to TvixBox. A little unusual, but I get the impression they're a tiny (and brand new) company.

Anyways, I've been living with the Tvix for about a month now (FW 2.0.5), and I figured I'd chime in with my results on some common issues:

Image quality and audio quality are good enough, no complaints there.
I'm running at 1080P with no sparklies. For reference, I'm using a 4 foot long DVI cable that came with a Dell monitor and I'm using a Westinghouse LVM37w3 as my display.
The Tvix network works fine at 100Mbit. There's apparently a fix for this issue now anyways, but I'm glad I didn't have to deal with it.
I regularly get 3800 kbytes/sec pushing data onto it with FTP.
I've been able to cleanly stream a 1080I MPG (~8.7Mbps) and a 720P WMV (~11.5Mbps) off of a Linux based NFS server as long as I didn't FF/RW. Woot!
I have been unable to get access to files outside of /tvixhd1 with Linux NFS so far. Symbolic links and "--bind" mounts don't work directly due to security features of the NFS server, and setting up sub-exports of "--bind" mounts with "nohide" and "crossmnt" makes the Tvix crash when you try to browse into them. (If you understand what that all means and have ideas on getting around it, please post here or PM me.)
Fast forwarding or rewinding more than 8x or jumping directly between FF and RW without hitting pause/play in between often make the machine hiccup really badly. I can almost always get out of it by waiting a few seconds, then hitting play/pause. By "hiccup" I mean the display pauses or goes black indefinitely. This issue seems directly tied to what type of video I am playing. Some types almost never have this issue, others have it all the time.
One particular MPEG with bad time stamps cannot be FF/RW properly. I can watch the video zoom by, but as soon as I hit play it jumps to the beginning of the file. I know the timestamps are bad since the time counters immediately jump to the 8 hour mark when I start playing it.
Sometimes trying to start internet radio playlists causes the Tvix to crash. The remote doesn't respond, but tapping the power button on the front of the box twice reboots it.
Sometimes, after playing a lot of varied file formats, the system gets in a state where it thinks it can't play things, or plays them badly (when I know it can). Rebooting the machine fixes this.
The inability to browse out of the directory while playing music files is annoying. Heck, almost everything about the music interface is annoying. OTOH, I knew that before I bought it and am not intending to use it as a music jukebox that much.
The fan is not particularly loud nor silent. I can hear it if there's no other noise in the room, but it's completely unnoticeable as soon as I'm watching something

I've searched this thread, but I couldn't find the answer.. How is the TViX M-4000P with playing files that have packed bitstream in them? Does it play those files fluently?

If you haven't got a clue if you're file has packed bitstream in it, download MPEG4 Modifier (http://www.moitah.net/) first and find out. With this program it is also possible to unpack the packed bitstream.

So, my question: does the TViX M-4000P play files that have packed bitstream fluently?

If you're looking for new 4000's without the fan or NIC problems, digitalconnection.com has a brand new batch of 4000's. Mine is on the delivery truck and should be here in a couple of hours:)

If you're trying to save a few bucks and get a refurbished one, I haven't seen anything about those being available anywhere.

I am a new member and have had my M-4000P for just 3 days. I too have seen my unit get confused and not think it can play my IFO/VOBs. I reboot the box and it is fine. Definately a firmweare issue. More importantly, occasionally my unit will give me a blank blue-screen and power itself completely off right in the middle of watching an IFO/VOB from a NFS enabled PC via Netshare. It has happend about 6 times over the weekend. Has anyone else seen this?

I only use the component interface at 480p (since I am playing SD DVDs) and it looks sweet. I ran it at 1080i and had no problems either. I will say that I wish the unit would output composite regardless of whether you are using Component/DVI as I need that for a "monitor" elsewhere in the house.

BTW, I have this working diskless no problem and have tested SAMBA and NFS. NFS works great as expected. I have only seen the unit lock-up when using the FF & RW keys. I instead use the right and left arrow and I have not seen the problem since. Not sure if they are the same thing and that it is just luck at this point. ALso, firmware upgrades DO WORK on an external USB drive connected to the unit. This way, you don't have to install one just for that purpose. It makes upgrades later a snap even if the unit is buried in the component stack. Just plug a USB extender cable in it and leave the cable near the fron of the stack and you are golden.

Overall, I love the thing and hope I can work out the powering off issue. I bought 2 from Digital Connection and will likely put one in every room of the house. I am using this for ripped DVDs and photos only. I use a Sonos for audio.

Does anybody know if the TVIX-4000 sold at digitalconnections have the fan noise problem ?
I intend to buy one from them .

Nice post, however are you satisfied with your purchase and would you get it again if you had the chance to choose?
Yes, I am satisfied and I would get it again. I know in the long run that the inability to add new codec support is going to be what forces me to buy something new. For now, though, it supports the vast majority of codecs I care about. The FF/RW issues are annoying, but they aren't show stoppers since I can accept that the Tvix will sometimes need a few seconds to recover from crazy button mashing.

Honestly, the Tvix was the cheapest and also one of the easiest ways to get a HD source I could control for my new 1080P TV. An HD Tivo is $800, HD-DVD and BluRay players were just as expensive, and even a new PC to handle the work would've been $500 at best w/ my noise and style requirements. I just wanted some way to keep HD quality movies around so I could watch them when I wanted. This does that excellently.

I'm not 100% sure but I ordered mine on Wednesday last week and a new batch had just come in on Tuesday. I'm not positive what the "fan problem" sounded like but mine is real quiet. I just need to get her to stop shutting itself off at random.

Overall, this is a great little unit. IMO they could have dropped support for internal HDD, get rid of the LCD and keypad and it would be tiny and probably about $150 retail.

I ordered one from digitalconnection.com two weeks ago, it shipped last Tuesday, and I got it today. I'm a little concerned or confused on why it came with firmware 1.98. I've seen others post that theirs came with 2.05. What is everyone else getting on the new batch from digitalconnection.com?

The fan issue was one of cause of the first delay and fixed in before we received the shipment so it should not be present in any of the units that came into the US. There were circuit board changes after those in Europe first reported the problems.

As for the firmware version, unfortunately, they ship with what worked when the untis were in production as I'm guessing that the EPROMS were all flashed and installed at the same time. Any upgrades will have to be performed after you recieve the units.

In my case, the FTP program I use displays it automatically every time it finishes sending a file. The version I use is about as user unfriendly as it gets, though, seeing as it's just the Unix command line client.

It seems that there impplementation of 4:3 Pan and Scan is backwards from what I would ecpect (unless I am stupid which is not out of the question). Here is what I have found.

When configured for 16:9 display to 16:9 TV:
1) While playing 16:9 source vob files life is great.
2) While playing 4:3 source vob files they appear 4:3 on the widescreen with the black bars on the sides. Typically, any DVD player will automatically stretch the 4:3 content to fit the 16:9 screen. ALso, somehow the M4000-P presents the image to my plasma "Full" in such a way that my plasma won't stretch it for me when I try the "wide" mode.

When configured for 4:3 Pan and Scan to 16:9 TV:
1) While playing 16:9 source the width is fine (and not stretched), however the top and bottom are cut off letterbox style.
2) While playing 4:3 source the picture is stretched appropriately and fills the screen as expected. My understanding was that 4:3 Pan and Scan is supposed to "crop" 16:9 content to fit a 4:3 screen. It appears that there implementation is backwards (or I am confused).

When configured for 4:3 letterbox to 16:9 TV:
1) While playing 16:9 source the width is fine but the height is cut off twice as much on the top and the bottom.
2) While playing 4:3 source the image is lettterboxed to my TV.

It would be great if this player could behave like a DVD player and automatically stretch 4:3 content when configured to a 16:9 display. Alternatively, if they could give us key on the remote (or combo of keys) to toggle between their implementation of 4:3 Pan and Scan that would suffice. Otherwise, it is too cumbersome to go into the setup menu each time to change the display types. The avergage user will not be able to do this.

I will try hooking it up to a real 4:3 TV via S-video next and see if it does the right thing for either of the 4:3 settings.

Can anyone explain what is going on here?

I have posted these questions to them directly and will update what I hear back.

"Netshare FTP" ???
I might be wrong here, but I assumed the Netshare application is only used to enable NFS (Network File System), on the PC and only that. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is something completely different.
The way the Tvix use the NFS is only to read a certain file from the network.
The FTP is used to send or fetch a file to/from the Tvix internal HDD.

In order to see what network speed that is used by Netshare, you can download Netlimiter (google for it) and it will show you how much network traffic that is used by any application on your PC. (You can also limit the network speed with it, but that's another thing)

In order to see what transfer speed you get with FTP you can use the same Netlimiter. But usually any decent FTP program will tell you this automaticly.

Note though, that when the Tvix reads a file via NFS it will not try to maximize the bandwith, but try to read "as much as it needs". Typically you should see higher network speeds being used, the higher the resolution and bitrate of the file being read.

My real question is however why would you like to see the network speed used by Netshare? Stuttering video problems?

Hello,

I have the tvix for almost 2 weeks now and have it setup with a HDD. Everything is pretty solid so far (movies, pictures and mp3's).
However, when i tried the network streaming function, my m4000 says it cannot see the folder on my pc. I have everything setup properly (ip's, etc). I can ftp to the m4000 and transfer files without any problems (so i assume that the tvix lan is working fine). I tried both SMB and netshare but still unsuccesful. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,

New M-4000 user here. (with latest firmware updated).

Question; I have DVD ISO images on my Infrant NV+ NFS share. The first time I selected one of my ISO images from the tvix GUI, the DVD's menu was displayed, I selected the movie and it started. Good. But, once the movie started playing, the MENU button on the remote wont take me back to the DVD's menu. The MENU button is completely unresponsive during playback. I stopped playback after a few minutes.

When I went back to the tvix menu, and selected the ISO a second time, the movie started playing from where I left off the previous time, and still the MENU button wont take me to the DVD menu.

Any suggestions on how to this to work? There must be a way to get back to the DVD menu.

It would be great if this player could behave like a DVD player and automatically stretch 4:3 content when configured to a 16:9 display.

I've never met a DVD player that does this. In fact, most DVD players I have used "AND" all three of my HTPCs that are setup to use a plasma widescreen HDTV, will play 4:3 (fullscreen) DVD's with black bars on the left and right. NONE of them will stretch the image. And as far as I know, that's the way it's supposed to be done. Stretching the 4:3 image to fill a 16:9 TV would drive a Movie Director absolutely MAD! I am happy that the TVIX 4000 adds bars on the left and right of the 4:3 DVD's that are playing on my 16:9 plasmas.

Well, actually my Sony DVD player does this. If i put in a 16:9 DVD it will play widescreen on the plasma. If I put in a 4:3 DVD it will play stretched. Black bars cause burn lines in plasma TVs and I already have issues with this. Most if not all kids animated DVDs are only 4:3 and need to be stretched. It turns out that kids can't tell and nor do they care. Kids can't go into the setup menu and change display types etc.

Either way, it does appear the they have not implemented Pan and Scan as one would expect.

Don't get me wrong I love this little box. I'm just trying to punch through the last of a few small issues.

I doubt they had the right idea regarding Pan & Scan when they labeled it such.

Pan & Scan requires 'markers' in the video in order to know when to pan let alone knowing whether to pan left instead of panning right.

I think you're missing the intent. If you have a 16:9 display, you're supposed to set that once in the Tvix setup menu, and then leave it alone.

If the video file you're playing isn't displaying properly after that, use the ZOOM button on the remote while playing the file to switch through various modes.

I believe the "FULLSCREEN" zoom mode should even stretch 4:3 videos out to 16:9 if you really want, so your display won't burn in black bars.

Chad,

We don't open and upgrade the packages for one simple reason, that they are factory sealed and we don't want to break that. I'm guessing that the chips are generally flashed at the same time often even before a production run and new versions often reserved for new purchase/shipment. Later runs can still have same components from earlier batch. While I would like to see firmware upgrades done prior to them packaging, I'm guessing that it is a process done only once prior to production and don't know if the factory will change.

If no one else reports the firmware they got in the next few days, I'll have our tech support open a new box to check. I haven't been keeping up with the status of the updates (and what gets fixed/broken) but I'd take the advise of Johnny upthread.

Thanks for the offer, but that isn't necessary. At the rate they've been releasing firmware updates, it probably doesn't even make sense for them to flash them again before they go out the door. There would likely be an update by the time it traveled the supply chain and made it to the consumer.

I was mainly just curious, not so much worried about the unit.

them but it takes a long long time (35 min for a 4.3 Gb ISO file) Would this time
drop if I istalled a FTP and if so which one shall I get knowing I am a poor technician ?

Either get your setup on a wired LAN or put a local drive inside the TViX and play your ISOs from there. And if you have a local drive already (as you imply, via the FTP comment), I think you'll find that short of a wired LAN, SneakerNet (bring the TViX to your computer and mount it as an external USB 2.0 drive and transfer the ISO files directly that way) has far more bandwidth than your wireless LAN.

I see that you have gotten an answer on the Menu button, so I won't involve that.

The other feature you are seeing (movie starts where you left off) is some kind of bookmark feature. I like it, but it can be a bit confusing.

I also see that they have implemented bookmark from network shares on 2.0.9.

nlindholm, only non-HD AVIs (DviX or XviD) files will work decently over 802.11g wireless.

From your description, it sounds like you have the TViX mounted as an external USB 2.0 drive already? I'm not sure what to make of your "find the TViX in another window on my PC" - it sounds to me like you are saying that it appears as an attached drive, which implies that you have it hooked up via USB 2.0 already. If that's the case, then you are already getting far, far better file transfer performance than you would ever get with downloading ISO images over your wireless to the TViX via an FTP transfer. I would advise you just keep doing what you are doing :) Unless it's motivated by the fact that you would prefer not to have to keep re-attaching the TViX to do this "Explorer"/Copy/Paste mechanism you are currently using.

Ahh I think you missunderstood my friend. I use the USB connected to me PC alot and yes that is by far the quickest way :) but I was trying to explain how I use the FTP. 1. Open explorer 2. open "My Networks" and doubleclicking on the Tvix Client. 3 then I drag and drop a file betwween the 2 folders. this is what takes 35 min for a DVD file and, besides having to disconnect my TViX from the TV room and walking upstairs to use the USB, is an option I need to explore. Is THIS setup correct for that or am I missing something (like an FTP server or what it's called) in order to make the wireless transfer between TViX and PC quicker ?
35 min for 4.5 Gb ... What is the comparable speed ? Is it 18 mb/sec ?

Thanks for taking the time to answer me m8

I'm editing myself because I just had a "Heureka" experience. Since I can Transfer files between my PC and TViX wirelessly I must have a FTP installed right (that's what it means.. the whole FTP schmeere, right?) My problem is ONLY that wireless transfer over a 108 mpbs router is slow and crappy and should be avoided unless it's non HD XviD files et cie ? Man please say this is so and I will understand.

"1. Open Explorer 2. Open "My Networks" and double-clicking on the Tvix Client. 3. then I drag and drop a file betwween the 2 folders."

I don't get this part at all ... maybe because I'm a Mac user and not a Windows user :D

I don't even see how the PC can see the TViX box in your "My Networks" unless the TViX box is sharing out SMB volumes, which I didn't believe it could.

Maybe a Windows expert will chime in here and say that "My Networks" can find FTP servers out on the local LAN and show them as connectable entities; if so, then I'm completely full of it. I wasn't aware that this was possible.

I'm not sure what else to say other than that FTP transfers over wireless are, indeed, slow.

4.5 GB in 35 minutes is 17.5 Mbps. Over a "peak" 54 Mbps 802.11g wireless LAN, that might not be all that bad of an average transfer rate. The real point is that unless you go to a wired LAN, you've got to realize that disconnecting the TViX and bringing it upstairs will be a lot faster (at 480 Mbps over USB 2.0) than any transfer mechanism that goes over your wireless.

But you've said you do this before you go to bed at night - so I'm not sure why the transfer times concern you all that much, if you're sleeping :D

I'd love that too my friend since that is one of my Questions to start with. ie Am I doing the right thing here setting it up like this. I don't know the technical jargon for it but XP has an built in FTP client/server thing I think. I have gone to my control panel, "add a network place", Chosen "choose another network location" . I then typed in Tvix ip adress together with its password : ftp//192,168,0,1xxxxx (can't remember exact) and presto it appears as a "network place" . I then open the FTP client folder and inside is the TViX folders... This is all explained in the Manual and very easy. But my file transfer is Too damn slow ! Why why why is that. ?? boooohooooo ;-(

I have a 108 Mpbs 802.11g. That's why I think it is too slow. :-(
I get your point about USB my friend.

But you've said you do this before you go to bed at night - so I'm not sure why the transfer times concern you all that much, if you're sleeping

Touchée ! :-) Nope me neither really. Im just too lazy disconnecting the Tvix everytime I get a new load of films to transfer. hehe

Annyway thanks for your time RiotNrrrd,

I'll check if it's a hardware issue with my PCI card or Router if nobody knows what can be wrong other than me being really lazy :-)

Both of my units from the most recent batch on to DC of 2/6/07. They had the older rev (1.95 or 1.98, I can't remember). Either way I upgraded them to 2.05 with no problem.

Hey gweeper, I tried the "zoom" button but it does not toggle to "full" or "Pan and Scan" as noted in the manual. It only toggles between "Zoom Mode" and "Off". I am able to zoom in to fill the screen. Note that this is not the same as when I select 4:3 Pan and Scan in the setup menu. The Pan and Scan mode does a real nice job on the stretching while the zoom literally zooms in and cuts things off top and bottom.

I did RTFM but I must be missing something simple cause mine won't toggle to "Full" or "Pan and Scan" in release 2.05. I did not try it with the previous version.

Any ideas?

thanks,

MM

I also got one from the latest batch at Digital Connection and it had the 1.9.8 firmware. I upgraded to 2.0.5 but noticed the Menu key no longer worked for DVD ISOs. I then upgraded to the 2.0.9 beta firmware and the problem was fixed.

I haven't noticed any fan or network problems. I got excellent service from Digital Connection and would definitely recommend them.

I also see that they have implemented bookmark from network shares on 2.0.9.
It remembers the last 10 movies. Not perfect, but at least they have done something wrt bookmark on network drives.

Good luck hunting more unknown features ;)

The zoom button also has the ability to zoom out like the old Malata DVD-N996 DVD player. Why would you want to zoom out? Say your televison has a lot of overscan. Using the zoom out function, you can eliminate the overscan and not have to mess with the service menu of your television. Pretty nifty!

I seem to remember noticing that not all zoom modes were available depending on what type of file I was playing. IIRC, it only gave me "zoom mode" and "off" when I was playing an ISO DVD backup. Most of the time all the modes are there, I swear. Most of the time I'm playing AVI files. Try some other file types and see what you get. If it does turn out to be related to file types, I don't have any easy suggestions. Convert your files, maybe?

I Recently bought a Tvix 4000. I have problems when playing ntsc avis because i get
choppy/stuttering picture in movies when the camera moves around in the film.
Does anyone else have this kind of problem. I know it's not the tv because ntsc works
fine when played trough the dvd player.

Thanks for the responses guys. It's no big deal, but glad to know I probably didn't get some old unit that somehow didn't get into the supply chain until the latest batch:)

Yes, I also recommend Digital Connection. It's really nice to have Kei as an active participant on these forums, and definitely above & beyond the typical customer sales/service experiences. I feel somewhat sorry for the guy that posted regarding tvixbox.com. If only he'd found and read these forums first, maybe he would have seen some of the many compliments on Kei and DigitalConnection. I really hope everything works out for him with his order.

Just received a brand new 4000P that I have been playing with the last couple days. I also have a LinkPlayer that I have owned for the last two years. Hoping to replace my LinkPlayer, I have been trying to play back all the different file types that playback fine on the LinkPlayer and found a few file types that have been causing issues for me with my 4000P.

1. Most of my mpg files that have AC3 audio play back without sound (Analog or Digital outs)
2. .most of my divx files don't play back at all and eventually cause the player to reboot.

All my avi's and ISO files playback fine with AC3 audio. I am using firmware 2.1.0 and had the same issues on earlier firmware's. Same results over the netwrok and local...

Having read through this thread an others I dont see this as a common issue but wanted to verify?

Kemac,
your AC3 sound issues is the same issue I am having. it seems to come from a method of how you created the MPG. if you hit "info" on the file you are playing you will see it says it is 44.1khz PCM audio. When in fact it is probably 3/2 AC3.

it seems this player cannot handle that type of mpeg2 video file.

Ahh ha on to something here, I saw your post but since I am using AC3 I didn't see the connection. Investigating further all my mpg's report AC3 0ch(??) however the ones with no sound report 44.1khz and the ones with sound are 48khz. So it appears this player has a problem with both AC3 and PCM files with audio encoded at 44.1khz.

I also have an LP2 and have been using it for 17months. I too am looking for additional WNMP and have been hovering over the TVIX4000. I am very interested in how you think the TVIX 4000 stacks up compared to the LP2.

It would be great and very much appreciated if you could comment on the following:

1. Is the 4000 as easy to setup on the network as the LP2?
2. I use WIZD with the LP2 and can stream files from any HDD on my network without restrictions, is that possible with the 4000?
3. I do not have NAS or NFS but can view HD TS files smoothly up to 16Mb/s, is NAS/NFS required for the 4000?
4. Is there anyway to delete files after viewing them? We do this with WIZD and LP2 and it is very convenient.
5. How stable is the 4000 compared to the LP2? I can not remember ever having to unplug my LP2 to get it unscrambled but keep in mind I do not use the DVD player.

Terrible support for the LP2 and a required hardware mod for good resolution on stills are the main reasons I am hesitant to purchase another one.

I haven't had my 4000 for long but I can provide some limited feedback.

1. Yes, both are simple to setup, especially if your using DHCP.
2. I am using WIZD on on two ReadyNAS devices. With the 4K there are limits to the number of shares (4) and the number of disk partitions (4). Their may be some other limits that I am not familiar with.
3. You can use NFS, SAMBA, local disk or USB devices. You can also ftp files to a local HD if you install one.
4. You can only delete files on the local HD not over the network.
5. I have only been using the 4k for a few days, aside from a problem with some of my .divx files the unit seems pretty stable. I have noticed alot of complaints about the built in ftp server but I haven't had too many issues.

I really like the form factor of the 4000 and the remote is much better than the LPs. Another plus is the frequency of firmware upgrades and the tendency not to break things when they add features and fix bugs!

Thank you very much for the feedback! I had forgotten about the LP2 remote.

Do you think the 4K will ever have h264 capability? or does it have the wrong Sigma design chip set like the LP2. It is not an important feature for me at least over the next 1-2 years but it would be nice to know it might be able to someday.

I saved me backed-up movies into separate files (for each chapter) in a single folder. Does anyone know how the 4000 proceeds to order the file - my problem is that i saved them as chapter number followed by the chapter name. EX) 1 "Intro"; 2 "chapter 2". The problem is that the player for some reason ordored the files a 1 10 11 12 13 14... 2 3 4 5 ... and not in the order labeled or placed into the folder.

** Basically how do you order the files in a way that you want to? **

Here is a new problem, I don't know if this started with the 2.1.0 firmware, or did it exist before. When viewing photos, it does not show the last file in the directory (a NFS share). If I add more files, it shows them, but not the last one. Can someone else look at Photos and see if they have the same issue?

As an example, if I have a directory with photos IMG_1000 - IMG_1250, the TViX shows IMG_1000 - IMG_1249.

Thanks

My guess is that you need to use a leading zero in the name to get the proper alpha-numeric sort, i.e.: 01 "Intro"; 02 "chapter 2", etc.

...lots of stuff about transfering files....
Nik

1. Transfer speed. Even if you get youself a gigabit wired network to your Tvix you will not get higher transfer speed than about 3000 kB (that's Bytes = 8 * 3000 = 24 Mbit/s). This is due to CPU limitation in the Tivx. This has ben posted "every where". This is in theory slightly better than what you get on your WLAN, but I get approximately the same on my wired network. So the average speed is probably slightly lower thatn 3000 kB/s.

2. How to FTP... The FAQ. Always read the FAQ.
With windows explorer:
http://www.tvix.co.kr/eng/faq/FAQM5000Ufirst.aspx?act=RD&id=137&pg=0&CATID=3&SCATID=2
With other program:
http://www.tvix.co.kr/eng/faq/FAQM5000Ufirst.aspx?act=RD&id=136&pg=0&CATID=3&SCATID=2

Reading the FAQ you will discover that the Windows Explorer method really isn't what you should use since it is limited in file size to 4 GB.

There are probably so many different FTP clients around that you could have one for each day of the year.
I use Total Commander. http://www.ghisler.com/
It's probably not the easiest and best, but it works and has never timed out in the middle of transfers as others have reported problems with.
If you must drag and drop I suggest googling:
http://www.google.se/search?hl=sv&q=ftp+client+drag+and+drop&meta=

Good luck with the file transfers.
/J
PS. Read the FAQ again. And as usual the latest manual. And if you're really curious, the release notes from all firmwares. Some features and limitations seems best explained there. DS

I just bought a TVIX 4000 from someone who bought it from Digital Connectoin and have experienced 2 problems. I've read all 15 pages of this thread and haven't been able to find an answer to them. Hopefully, someone can help.

I'm using Firmware version 2.1.0.

1. While playing a ripped dual-layered DVD (the main VOB file is about 5GB), the movie stops somewhere close to the end. I tried to select the scene just after where the movie stopped but it won't jump to there but instead displayed the main menu. All scenes selected after this one did the same. I also have a Mediagate MG-25 and this movie had no problem playing to the end. I thought this might have something to do with a 4GB VOB size limit? But isn't that just limited to FAT32-formatted drives? Mine is NTFS-formatted.

I used DVDShrink to convert the VIDEO_TS contents into an ISO file. The TVIX 4000 does play the entire movie after I did this.

This problem is very annoying since I have many DVDs ripped to VIDEO_TS folders.

2. Sometimes, the video shown is shifted to the right by a few pixels. I can see a dark line to the left of the video.

I am using component-video output. I'm waiting for a DVI-HDMI cable to be shipped so I could test this out.

Is anyone experiencing the 2 problems above? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just in case anyone wanted to know how switching from the 4k to an MB100 has been.....

First off DC was great about the RMA process and shipping an MB100 as soon as it was in stock.

Secondly, I am sooo glad I went with the MB100 so far.

Digital audio over HDMI works great. No sparkles and no overscan. The UI is nicer to look at and it is not so compressed that you see JPG artifacts around most text on the screen like the 4k, I don't see any at all. NFS is working great as well, using Allegro on my PC and have created shares for multiple drives and can see them all.

You can create profiles, up to 10 I believe, that save brightness/contrast/saturation/subtitle encoding/TV aspect/zoom level settings. Pretty handy since HD content tends to be much brighter and have different color saturation than SD like, Xvid encoded TV shows for example.

Let me just say the build quality on this thing is nice. The silver aluminum housing is flawless and the whole thing has a heavy feel to it without the HDD. It even comes with a gold plated VGA-to-component adapter. Although I won't be using it, the back-lit remote is nice too.

It has not locked up on me yet either.

Anyway, if anyone is still having trouble deciding what to buy I hope this helps.

Cool feature ! I'd love to have that on my M5000A.... Think I'll propose that and see what happens :-)

I had been seriously looking at the MB100 until I started viewing and posting at the Pixel Magic forum. Two things turned me off; the first was that there were numerous posts regarding frequent MB100/200 lockups. At least one of the posters with this problem had resorted to installing an extension cord with an easy on/off switch. The MB100 gets scrambled and has to be unplugged. Another poster with the same problem said he fixed it by simply unplugging the unit after each use! I saw exactly zero posts from Pixel Magic even acknowlegding the problem let alone a fix...but the real kicker was that when I posted and said that I may not purchase the unit because of the lockup/unplugging issue they(Pixel Magic) deleted my post! I posted that my post had disappeared and that vanished as well. Another forum participant then PM'd me and said that he had seen my post about the deleted post and he said that happened all the time.

Hopefully you will not run into the unplugging issue....please post back and update us with your experience with the MB100

I am trying to get up to speed on the M-4000P and I have one question right off the bat.

Can I transfer content to the box via the Ethernet connect? I would like to be able to load content to this on an incremental basis. I am trying to search through the thread but I figured I would just come right out and ask. Thanks.

Hi,

I jumped and just bought a 4000u from datoptic, can't wait for it to get here. I'm shopping for hard drives now, so have a couple of questions.

Can I use a cable that changes SATA to PATA for my SATA hard drives in order to place inside the player? I have some SATA hard drives lying around but no PATA, and since this only take PATA/IDE

Has anyone tried placing a hard drive larger than 500gb internally? I want to know if I can place a 750gb one in it...

I plan on using this mainly for the internal hdd and usb host capability, not interested in streaming. This is going to be my portable movie library, and I have a lot of movies =)

Thanks for your help!

I have had 2 problems:

1) When I attempt to FTP a movie file from my computer to Tvix 4000p internal drive, the transfer seems to complete but doesn't. I have used 3 different ftp clients and after a movie seems to transfer correctly, the tvix says it is 0.0 MB and of course it won't play. I use 2.10 firmware, CuteFTP, BulletProof FTP and Transmit FTP. I have tried restarting the tvix ftp server and restarting the tvix itself. The ftp clients see the tvix directories and the transfers seem to be workng, progress bars show transfer completing but when I go to play the movie, tvix says movie has 0.0 MB and will not play.

2) I need to convert KVCD (bin/cue) movies to mpg using various utilities (VCDGear, Isobuster, ffmpg) because the Tvix does not recognize bin/cue files. After the movie is converted, I play it with the Tvix 4000p, but the fforward and rewind controls do not work correctly and often an attempt to use them results in a crash. Has anyone found a way to successfully play or convert bin/cue files to play on the tvix 4000 so that these controls work correctly?

Any suggestions for fixes would be appreciated. I use firmware 2.10 and play from an internal drive.

1) No clue...

2) Try to use mpeg2repair on the mpeg file you produce.
It will tell you if there are any errors in the file, and try to ceorrect them.

That has worked on many mpeg files with FF/REW problems for me.

Goofy1641,
While technically converting the PATA to SATA cable may work. (I have not tried and do not know if it would work)

You definately would encounter physical issues. The space for a hard drive is very small
and is just large enough to slide in the drive. The PATA cable that you plug the drive into
cannot be replaced without taking the entire unit apart and that will void your warrentee.
There is no room in the drive slot to fit an adapter cable and the original cable.

hope this helps.

The 4000 should support 750G drives since you can by a unit from Digital Connection with one installed already. I have a 320G drive in mine.

cheers,

Has anyone experienced video blackouts while playing back HD content? Its particularly bad on ts files. I am connected to a 60" XBR2 via HDMI. The entire output goes black (I left the info display up while its doing it). I am running the latest firmware 2.1.3 but I'll drop back to 2.1.0 shortly to make sure its not the beta firmware.

All with the same video blackouts. I'm loading 1.8.5 now just as a test but I'm not expecting much. I wish I had some component cables laying around to test it out with that, but I am using a DVI to HDMI adaptor and a 10' HDMI cable. You have to configure your CuteFTP to make only one connection at a time with your TVIX (I think that it is in the properties panel of your connection with TVIX settings). By default CuteFTP (and also other FTP clients) will make multiple connections thereby crashing the TVIX FTP server.

Unless one intends to move often his mediaplayer from one place to another, I do not see any point in installing a large hard drive inside it because that whole space will be practically unusable by any other computer in your network but the TVIX. I'd rather install the large hard disk inside a home server and get the TVIX to access it via the network (that is what I did), so that the space can be used for other purpose and to download your a/v files directly to it.

I asked Dvico and they said that the only differences concern the tuner functionality, and only the Korean standard.
Not so much fun there....

:p

Regarding .mkv files, if one registers with the "My Q&A" at Tvix's web site, one can see a number of tips, and comments not published in the FAQ.
One of them states that there are no plans to implement support for mkv files.

is it really necessary for you to be so condescending and mean-spirited? i read your "witty comments" before you edited them out, and actually searched Mr Steve's earlier forum posts to see what he'd done to piss you off so much. i couldn't find anything, but if it was so bad it was deleted, i apologize. but i still don't see how a good-natured comment from him about someone missing an undocumented feature warranted your response.

i'm not trying to start an argument here (enough of them in the hidef forums), and i was originally going to pm you with this. but this is a public forum concerning a rather quirky piece of equipment, in an area (network streaming) prone to all sorts of weird issues. it will have a steep learning curve and i would hate for new members to be so put off by your responses that they are afraid to ask questions.

so i'm making this public plea that you try to be a little more understanding when someone asks a question that is answered in the pdf manual (although it's missing from his printed manual), or who otherwise doesn't fully RTFM (and pdf, and faq, and 3 related forum threads, etc.). i think you'll really do yourself and the rest of the forum a favor if you just ignore the questions you don't want to answer.

Haydude,
You could do as Jofa says, and check the Q&A on the Tvix page or you could use VirtualDubMod (maybe the tvix page says the same).
In my experience Matroska files are mainly used when having dual (or more) audio-tracks. I might be wrong, but usually those tracks are normal AC3 or MP3 tracks.
What I usually do when I encounter a matroska file is to import them into Virtualdubmod, select which audio-track I want. Then remove the other and save it. Just remember to select direct-stream-copy on the video, and audio as you do not want to render it again. The output is .avi and will contain just one video and one audio track. That should be playable on the tvix.
You can find a link to Virtualdubmod on www.videohelp.com (under tools I think)

Good luck!

Can't say what is fair, but in Norway (where I live) it is normal for them to refund the return shipping if the unit is still under warranty, and if it is in fact an error on the unit.
Normally I have to send the company a copy of my receipt to get my money back.

I have read this thread but I am not seeing an answer for this particular question.

I want to get a 4 drive USB external enclosure that is RAID5 capable and set it up as a RAID5 array. (Four 750GB drives giving me 2.25TB of usable space)
I would then plug the drive enclosure straight into the 4000P.
It seems to me that since this would in essence be a single logical drive it wouldn't be subject to the 2 drive per USB port limitation.
Has anyone here done this and does it work?
I would hate to buy this TViX and find out it doesn't work.
I'm 99.9% sure it will work but thought I would ask anyways. ;)

The reason I want to plug it into the 4000P directly is because running a Cat 5E or Cat6 cable from my switch to the TViX would be a major PITA. I would rather not go there. I am willing to deal with moving the USB enclosure to a PC to copy/move data.

Does anyone here have any recommendations for a RAID5 capable USB enclosure?
I have been looking at the Datoptic site but I haven't done much research on this yet.
Any info appreciated.

THECUS n5200 does the trick. However, it's a 5-drive raid5 case instead of a 4-drive. I have five 500gb drives in mine with a raid5 giving me a little over 1.9 (real useable) terrabytes of space. If you bought a 4-drive case unit using 750gb drives at raid5 you would get just about 2.1 (real useable) terrabytes. However it would cost you $600 bucks more! (which is not very econominc or smart, if you ask me) My thecus runs 24/7 delivering my big DVD collection to all my rooms in my house. it's so fast, I have fed 3 HD @ 19mbps streams simultaneously. I think it will go up to 5 and maybe 10-11 DVD streams. But it's just me and my wife, so even if my parents stayed over for the weekend, it would never be more then 3 streams at a time if everyone was in a different room watching something different. Infrant ReadyNAS is just as good as the Thecus, though not quite as fast and does not hold as many drives. Yet they are the same price.

You need nothing else other then:
1. Thecus n5200
2. Tvix 4000p
3. cat5 cable

ofcourse you'll need a computer with a web browser to setup the preferences on the thecus, but once it's set & saved, you can unplug.

That n5200 is an interesting piece of hardware.
Actually though, I am hoping to find something a little cheaper. :)
I don't need a NAS, I just need a drive enclosure with USB. RAID is preferable but not mandatory.
Of course, the more I think on this, the more I think I should just run the damn Cat5 cable, no matter how much of a PITA it is.
That n5200 would allow me to do a lot of things a simple drive enclosure wouldn't do. Hmmmm...

Oh and you are right about the 750GB drives. Not cost effective at all.
500GB drives look like the sweet spot.

Thanks for all the info Shannon.
It's appreciated!

Oh, well in that case, if you just wanna feed video from the USB port on the back of the 4000P (which works great by the way, I do it all the time from a little 2.5" 30GB laptop drive in a USB bus powered enclosure) then you can grab the first cheap encolure you see on eBay. or better yet, buy two 1TB pre-built drives from one of the many manufactures that sell them.

The problem is the RAID5 capabilites you mentioned. And that's why I responded the way I did. If you want saftey via redundancy RAID5 provides, then this requires a processor and some sort of OS to handle it for you. No plain-jane case will do that for you. And any manuafacture that does it, is going to go all out with the features to make it competitive to the market.

It's kinda like asking for a Mercedes Benz with cloth seats, manual windows and no radio. It's just not gonna happen. if you want the luxury of Raid5, you're gonna have to pay for all the other luxuries a Raid5 enclosure comes with. So to speak.

Guilty as charged. :p

The more I think on it the more I like that n5200. The wife will have a cow. She'll get over it though. :D
Good things to think about.

Matt, I did all of my research around Nov/Dec last year, but here's what I found...

I didn't find any good direct attached storage solutions with RAID-5. I think there was one or two that had two drives mirrored, but that's a lot of wasted drive space, and I don't think they were very cheap.

I ended up getting the Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ with 2x500gb. I didn't compare to the THECUS n52000 that Shannon recommends. I narrowed it down to the Buffalo Tech TeraStations and the ReadyNAS. I picked the ReadyNAS mostly because their X-RAID provides such a nice and easy upgrade path over time, plus active user forums and firmware stability. I also preferred some the more flexible mgmt functionality it has over the TeraStations.

I did also buy a VANTEC Nextstar external SATA enclosure and the AMS Venus T4U external 4 bay IDE drive enclosure to house some extra hard drives I had laying around.

As far as the networking, I had the same problem as you... didn't have any real good way to get cabling to the 4000. I tried an ethernet/wireless bridge, and that's a useless effort. But... I found great success with the LinkSys PLK200 PowerLine product. I'm getting about 44 Mbps - you can read more about it here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9810104&&#post9810104)

Well, I crawled under the house after making my last post and found that running a Cat5 cable won't be as bad as I thought it would be.
So, after realizing that I could network the 4000P I have plans for doing something different.
I would like your thoughts on it (Shannon and Chad, anyone else as well)
I have a spare PC here running Windows 2000 Server. I am using it as a sandbox for web design and testing forum software updates. (I run a genealogy web site and forum for a family association)
I was thinking I could just buy another RocketRaid 454 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816115016), put that card in the 2000 box and hang hard drives off of that. It would be a single drive in Windows and I could get RAID5 as well. Granted it will be a strain on the system when writing data to the array (parity calculations), but I wouldn't be trying to write to the array and stream to the TViX at the same time.
BTW I have owned 2 of these 454 cards for about 3 years now. Never had a problem with either one. I have had a hard drive fail in each array once, the hot spare always kicked in as advertised and I never had a problem rebuilding the array when the dead drive was replaced. I know that 3Ware and LSI make better products but in my limited experience, these things work.
What do you guys think of this idea?

Just to verify, streaming .iso files over a wired 100MB network to the 4000P is working correctly for just about everyone, correct?

Keep in mind that streaming WMA is different than streaming mpeg...in that the bitrate is usually considerably lower for WMA. The kicker is that converting to WMA is one of the more time consuming conversions and if this were something that was done on a regular basis then it could quickly become intolerable.

Good point, perhaps others with Linksys PLE200 can try different HD formats or recorded HD programming and report the results, but according to CNET, HDTV content peaks at 28Mbps. So if I am consistently getting throughput of around 44Mpbs this should be a non-issue...

did you try using the tv-out button on the remote? You have to cycle through the outputs (wait a few seconds after each key press). What output are you using on the box to your tv?

Does anyone have experience with playing MPEG2 transport stream HDV captures? I have found that the video plays fine, but the audio is either absent or not reliable (with ANY M4000 firmware version).

Data from the M4000 "info" display (when playing HDV capture):
Video Info: MPEG2 HD 1440 x 1088
26.12 Mbps, 29.97 fps
Audio Info: MPEG1, 2ch, 48 kHz

Any suggestion to improve the audio playback? DViCO support does not respond to my questions about this problem.

What is your audio output setup? As in what options do you have on the audio screen of the tvix setup? What audio outs are you using on the TVIX and into what?

I am using analog out (associated with DVI out). I believe that this problem is not M4000 configutation related as other (non-HDV) ts files play audio with the same M4000 configuration without any problem.

I too tried the Linksys PLK200 and would like to confirm that this product works great for me as well. I am getting around 44 Mbps as well and tested streaming ISO files, MPEGs and HD Video from my Sony HC3 camcorder compressed into WMA format. Everything streams with no problems on my Tvix 4000 player. I think this is one of the first products able to deliver sufficient throughput over powerline network for video streaming. This product is a great solution for anyone looking for alternatives to rewiring the house with CAT5 cabling...

I too have a Sony HC3 camcorder from which I capture MPEG2 transport stream files. On playback of these files on the M4000 the video is fine, but the audio either is absent or drops out after a while or after a FF or PAUSE operation. I am playing these files from USB HDD attached to the M4000. Are you saying that you have to compress the HD ts files captured from the HC3 to "WMA format" to successfully play them on the M4000? What is "WMA format?" Have you tried playing ts files?

I capture and play the transport stream ".m2t" files on my M4000 without a problem from the internal hard drive. I don't have any trouble with video or audio and the footage from HC3 looks great on my 50-inch Panasonic plasma. I have not tried the USB attached hard drive to do this.

You don't need to use WMA or any other format, unless you would like to reduce the size of the transport stream files by using better compression. WMA is the Windows Media player format, which is used by a Windows Movie Maker under Windows Vista to finalize HDV content captured from the camcorder. I am not sure I will be using it, as it takes about 8 hours to render a one hour HDV footage captured from tape. This was just a test I did to see if I liked the new HDV support in Windows Movie Maker under Vista...

Thanks for your reply. The obvious difference between your playback and mine is internal HDD vs. USB HDD. Perhaps the USB interface on the M4000 does not have enough bandwidth for captured HDV files. However, the USB interface on my desktop has no problem in playing back the captured HDV file (using the DViCO Fusion5USB software).

What firmware revision are you running?
There was earlier a bug concerning USB playback, but Dvico claimed they fixed it in 2.0.5.
Perhaps it wasn't enough, or is introduced again, or you have older fw?
If you don't have older, then you can report it ro Dvico and hope they fix it.

The USB bug fix seems to be just for disc playback problems.

I have tried firmware versions 1.9.8, 2.0.5 and 2.1.0. All have a problem playing audio from a HDV capture, but 1.9.8 "works" the best (being able to play the audio if there is no FF or Pause operation).

I have posted five questions to DViCO technical support (MyQ&A), two of them about this problem, and they have responded to the other three questions, but not the two about this problem. Don't know if they are "thinking" about the answers or just ignoring the questions.

I'm seriously considering buying the M-4000P version but I have a few questions to ask before considering buying one:

1) What's the quality like when viewing JPG's?
2) What hard drive size does the M-4000P support up to?
3) Can I copy files burnt on DVD and CD support as movie clips and MP3's via a external USB DVD-ROM to the M-4000P?

I want one of these but the fact it uses IDE drives bugs me to no end. I can get SATA drives that are bigger, faster and cheaper than any IDE drive out there. Will there ever be a SATA version of this? If not I will just wait for the next gen and that would have to support SATA. Hate to wait but I can not bring myself to spend any money on an IDE drive that is going the way of the dinosour.

Also does anyone know if you can play NERO digital on this thing. Thanks again.

Well, nobody seems to have them in stock. I ordered from digitalconnection, where I swear they listed as in stock, but got an email syaing they were sold out and wouldnt get more till the 30'th. I then called tvixbox who also didnt have any, nor had any idea when more were coming. Maybe they are being prevented from importing more due to the Dolby licensing problem they supposedly have/had? I had a very poor customer experience with Digital Connection over a M-4000P that I ordered from them on Tuesday March 6 (of this year) when their web site showed that the M4000 was IN STOCK. It showed the same thing the next day as well. It turned out it was NOT IN STOCK. Their excuse was that it want out of stock on Tuesday which is the day off of their employee who takes care of orders. Anyway, I cancelled my order with them and told them I would never recomend then to anyone. They had no problem wasting my time waiting for an order that would not ship for weeks.

I then purchansed a M4000 from Datoptic (http://www.datoptic.com/cgi-bin/web.cgi?product=M4000P&detail=yes) and got free shipping as well. More importantly, when they stated they had the product in stock it was IN STOCK.

... Here is my e-mail exchange with digital witch.

Dear MrReis,

Thank you again for your continued effort to resolve the issue.

I understand your complaint that we are at fault for the delay you have experienced in getting the TVIX. I don't disagree in general with every point you have listed below and fully apologize admitting our responsibility, there is absolutely no dispute as to the fact that we made an error. We want nothing more than the opportunity to do right and would have done everything in our power to make it so, unfortunately we were unable to do so as we had absolutely no inventory of the product you ordered.

The problem as you described is is Yukari's problem in that she relayed incorrect message to you when you contacted us. It is indeed her responsibility to update inventory status, albeit she was out the day before and apparently was not caught up yet, but one of her responsiblities are to notify customers of any problems we have with filling orders. I appreciate your defense of her, but I assure you that she was remiss in her responsibility and provided incorrect information to the reason for the delay. That being said, she is very conscientous and regrets the error which has no bearing on whether the website information was incorrect. She does not have a replacement on her days off nor does she have a manager, she has a partner that works hand in hand with her and they seem to have suffered from lack of communication.

We have already acknowedged that there was an error on our store and that we were at fault. We hear your complaint about what we did wrong, but I'm not sure what is it that you expect we can do to make this right considering the only option I can read from your correspondence so far is that we *SHOULD* have shipped your product on time? Again, I apologize to you for the delay and the incorrect information on our website.

Best Regards,
Customer Support

Subject: RE: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466)

K,- I'll try to make this simmple so you understand.

1. On Tuesday (and Wednesday) your web site showed that a product I was interested in was "In Stock."

2. I ordered the product from your store on Tuesday because I trusted that it was in stock.

3. In fact, the product was not in stock on Tuesday ... the information on the web site was incorrect.

4. I wasted my time ordeing an out of stock product from your web site.

5. Had I known your store did not have the product on Tuesday, then I would have tried other stores. -- DatOptic did have it in stock on Tuesday (and still does today).

6. **MY POINT** Had I ordered the product from DatOptic on Tuesday (rather than from Digital Connection) then I would have the product today (not next Monday). The delay is your fault.

Yes, Yukari made a mistake, but her mistake is your responsability. Your responsabilty is to make sure a process is in place that ensures correct product infromation is communicated to your customers by your reports and your web site. Yukari told me that "someone else" runs your web site for you, so misinformation on it is their fault and not hers or yours. -- If you succeed at something do you have the same attitude that it is not because of anyting that you have done and look for someone else to give the credit to?

Is there something that I did wrong when I ordered from you store? Should I have not trusted you web site and called up just to make sure the product was really in stock. Then should I have called again to make sure it was really in stock becuase your stock may have been depleted while I was on the telephone with Yukari's Tuesday replacement?

The comment and step that you did *NOT* make is more important than any comment or step that you did make. I would have much prefered to have *NO* information about the M4000 being in or out of stock rather than *INCORRECT* infomation. Then I would have continued my effort to find what I was looking for either by e-mailing or calling your store or other stores. If you can't keep important information on your web site up to day then perhaps you shouldn't display that information until you find a method that will ensure that it is correct. You stated that the M400 stock was depleted sometime on Tuesday but the web site wasn't updated until Wednesday night (actually it wasn't updated until early Thurdsay morning around the time you read my e-mail). Is two day old information what you concider to be "good enough" for a web based business?

Dear MrReis,

Glad that DataOptics was able to help you fill your order, we provide some of the product they carry including the TVIX.

I don't know why you got the impression that we felt your order was not important, it certainly is. Even though I realize that Yukari made a mistake and I can reprimand her for it, it still would not have resolve the issue of our being able to come up with a product we no longer had in inventory. She will certainly get a notice of her shortcomings in her position.

We stive to provie the most up to date information available, and we try to provide the kind of service you expect as much as we can. If you feel there was a comment made or a step we did not take to relay our efforts, we're all ears.

K,- My order (# 41446) has been cancelled (and I have received an e-mail to confirm that). Please do not fill my cancelled order.

I contacted DataOptic this morning and ordered a M4000P (they had 10 units in stock) as well as a FusionHD5 USB (also in stock) with free two-day shipping. I will recieve my order on Monday. If I had ordered these items from DataOptic on Tuseday rather than from Digial Connection, then I would have them in my position today. I used the incorrect information posted on your web site which you apparently don't think is importatnt to keep up to date to make my purchase decision. You don't even think it's important to inform your sales agent (Yukari) about what's in stock and what is not. That isn't her failure, it's her manager's failure.

If your business is so great that you afford to treat your customers the way you treated me, then good for you. You can be sure that if anyone ever askes me for a recomendation of who to buy a M4000P from I will not recomend Digial Connection.

Dear MrReis,

First, my apologies for the inability to process your order, apparently we were right at the end of the inventory when the problem occured with your order. We listed the new ETA on our store site (the front page was corrected last night) on Tuesday as soon as it became apparent that we would not have enough stock that day to process all orders. I'm not sure what transpired between the time you spoke with Yukari to when she became aware that we were out of stock on the item, it appears to me that she was not aware of the situation as she does not work on Tuesdays (the day we ran out of stock). Unfortunately, we are working to get inventory in as quickly as possible, but having some difficulty with getting a definite shipping date for our next order. If we had any inventory left to process your order, we would do so as an priority but I don't have that option at the moment. We did not charge your card and will do our best to get your order processed, but you may want to check with TVIXUSA just in case they have stock of the M4000P.

Ms Clark,- I was referred to you by Yukari in either you customer service or sales department.

I placed an order (#41466) for a M-4000P Media Player with a 250 GB hard drive yesterday via your store web site. Your web site's home page clearly showed (AND STILL SHOWS) in RED that the player is "In Stock." I placed my order based on the information. I called your sales department at 1-800-327-8049 as invited to by the order confirmation e-mail I received from your store because at 4:50 PM my order was still "Pending." I was connected to Yukari who stated that my order was "Pending" because the hard drive that I had ordered to be installed on the player was out of stock. I told Yukari to forget the hard drive and just ship the player. She said she would do that and send it via two day to make-up for the delay for the out of stock hard drive. I thanked her for that. 15 minutes later Yukari called be to tell me that the M-4000P player is out of stock and would not be in stock until March 27. When I reminder her that you web site shows that it is "In Stock" she said that some "other company" takes care of the web site. I guess she told me that because she thought I would understand that the incorrect information is not your responsibility. I very much know that it is your responsibility. You web site's home page still indicates that the player is "In Stock" (in red).

This has been one of my worst customer experiences that I have ever had. If I was your manager I think that I should be copied on this e-mail.

New Beta firmware released:

ftp://ftp.dvico.com/Products/TViX/FirmWare/M-5000/Beta/

version 2.1.5-A5

No idea what the changes are. Hope its more stable than 2.1.3beta.

Update:
Tried it out... not too much new stuff, but one thing I did try out was .idx and .sub and that did in fact work (tried both 23.976 and 25fps divx/xvid movies).
Isn't that typical... just when I had converted most of the .sub subtexts into .srt using the manual method they come along and support the damn thing. LOL!

Still not able to rotate pictures or play 4:3 DVDs in 16:9.

Digital Witch checking in......;)

The shortage is not a problem with Dolby, but I suspect more an issue with production. We wouldn't have had the inventory problem if it wasn't for the network defects and various other issues that has caused more units to be used for RMA, and our feeling is that those folks get first dibs. Sorry for the delay, but we've had less communication on the status of orders than in the past, which is frustrating to say the least, and I regret that it is being felt by our customers.

Unfortunately, until all of the vendors that use the Sigma package migrate to a newer processor, the h.264 support will be unlikely, and I don't expect any of those to come out until around or after the summer.

It'll be interesting to see how the EM8623 chip was implemented. Here's a brochure page for the units:

http://www.digitalconnection.com/downloads/m4100_m5100sh_brochure.pdf

Can't tell by the literature what differences if any there are in the two models. HDTV tuner and wireless LAN is optional add-ons for both models, it seems. The M4100SH uses a tiny tuner like their Nano that slides into a socket in the back of the unit. I can't comment on the h.264 yet.
