Terry spent the day with three of DVICO's engineers the other day. Kei Clark 03-29-07, 01:03 PM Hi Kei, Just to clarify, are you saying you expect to have the M4100SH for US release in May? That would be great news. Any projections on price yet? Also, when the 4100 is released will the 4000 be phased out, or will both be sold side by side for awhile? Thanks, Barry The M4000P will stay on the market as a lower priced entry level unit, the M4100SH will cost about $70-80 more, although the final price has not been set as yet. The estimated release is end of April, so I stand by the early May ship date.....for now. MrReis 03-30-07, 12:14 AM Terry spent the day with three of DVICO's engineers the other day. Hmmm... Are you Terry's mouthpiece? Is Terry contractually obligated to not state where he gets his information (i.e., did he sign a NDA)? Is TPeterson an alias for Kei Clark? Is Terry the third DVICO engineer (a la The Third Man)? Why are you answering for another (seemingly unrelated) subscriber? TP,- What's going on? Just read the specs or go the TVIX website. It is pretty clear that these tuners will be ATSC only (for the US and other ATSC markets). I have been reading through this thread and seen refernce to "Network Problems" but can't find a difinative answer. I am ripping dvd's to .iso using DVD shrink. If they are on the internal drive, everything works fine and plays great! I have tried a several network connections and am having problems. I tried seting up an old PC as a sort of NAS using Netshare to access the PC. I have tried through two different routers (one a Linksys 10/100 and one a D-link 10/100/1000). All of this is a wired connection. I also now have a ReadyNas NV+. This I also connected through both routers. I have even connected straight to the NV+ with a cross over cable, bypassing the router. In ALL situations, I can connect to the NAS, browse the files, and play the .iso files, but in ALL situations, the file will play fine for maybe 60 sec. then start skipping/pausing/jumping/etc, making the video unwatchable. I have tried several different cat5 cables, and I am using NFS. Is this a similar problem other people are having with "network problems"? Is this a hardware issue that I need to possibly exchange the 4000? Thanks Steve pumori 04-01-07, 11:34 AM I finally hooked up my 4000p into my system and would like to update the firmware. The unit has no internal disk and the instructions make it sound as if you are copying the latest firmware to the internal disk then opening that file within the units operating system. Is this correct? Can you update firmware without installing an internal hard disk? TPeterson 04-01-07, 04:39 PM Can you update firmware without installing an internal hard disk?Put the updated fw on a USB stick, plug that into the TViX, and open it from there. pumori 04-01-07, 05:06 PM TPeterson - Thanks, that's simple enough. Anthony A. 04-02-07, 12:03 AM big deal, so they made a mistake. what did you expect... to get a free unit out of them? they apologized 10 times. get over it, you wasted a couple days tops. there are bigger issues around the globe than a website having a 1 day delay in updating inventory!!! I had a very poor customer experience with Digital Connection over a M-4000P that I ordered from them on Tuesday March 6 (of this year) when their web site showed that the M4000 was IN STOCK. It showed the same thing the next day as well. It turned out it was NOT IN STOCK. Their excuse was that it want out of stock on Tuesday which is the day off of their employee who takes care of orders. Anyway, I cancelled my order with them and told them I would never recomend then to anyone. They had no problem wasting my time waiting for an order that would not ship for weeks. I then purchansed a M4000 from Datoptic (http://www.datoptic.com/cgi-bin/web.cgi?product=M4000P&detail=yes) and got free shipping as well. More importantly, when they stated they had the product in stock it was IN STOCK. ... Here is my e-mail exchange with digital witch. Dear MrReis, Thank you again for your continued effort to resolve the issue. I understand your complaint that we are at fault for the delay you have experienced in getting the TVIX. I don't disagree in general with every point you have listed below and fully apologize admitting our responsibility, there is absolutely no dispute as to the fact that we made an error. We want nothing more than the opportunity to do right and would have done everything in our power to make it so, unfortunately we were unable to do so as we had absolutely no inventory of the product you ordered. The problem as you described is is Yukari's problem in that she relayed incorrect message to you when you contacted us. It is indeed her responsibility to update inventory status, albeit she was out the day before and apparently was not caught up yet, but one of her responsiblities are to notify customers of any problems we have with filling orders. I appreciate your defense of her, but I assure you that she was remiss in her responsibility and provided incorrect information to the reason for the delay. That being said, she is very conscientous and regrets the error which has no bearing on whether the website information was incorrect. She does not have a replacement on her days off nor does she have a manager, she has a partner that works hand in hand with her and they seem to have suffered from lack of communication. We have already acknowedged that there was an error on our store and that we were at fault. We hear your complaint about what we did wrong, but I'm not sure what is it that you expect we can do to make this right considering the only option I can read from your correspondence so far is that we *SHOULD* have shipped your product on time? Again, I apologize to you for the delay and the incorrect information on our website. Best Regards, Customer Support Digital Connection -----Original Message----- From: MrReis Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 5:00 PM Subject: RE: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466) K,- I'll try to make this simmple so you understand. 1. On Tuesday (and Wednesday) your web site showed that a product I was interested in was "In Stock." 2. I ordered the product from your store on Tuesday because I trusted that it was in stock. 3. In fact, the product was not in stock on Tuesday ... the information on the web site was incorrect. 4. I wasted my time ordeing an out of stock product from your web site. 5. Had I known your store did not have the product on Tuesday, then I would have tried other stores. -- DatOptic did have it in stock on Tuesday (and still does today). 6. **MY POINT** Had I ordered the product from DatOptic on Tuesday (rather than from Digital Connection) then I would have the product today (not next Monday). The delay is your fault. Yes, Yukari made a mistake, but her mistake is your responsability. Your responsabilty is to make sure a process is in place that ensures correct product infromation is communicated to your customers by your reports and your web site. Yukari told me that "someone else" runs your web site for you, so misinformation on it is their fault and not hers or yours. -- If you succeed at something do you have the same attitude that it is not because of anyting that you have done and look for someone else to give the credit to? Is there something that I did wrong when I ordered from you store? Should I have not trusted you web site and called up just to make sure the product was really in stock. Then should I have called again to make sure it was really in stock becuase your stock may have been depleted while I was on the telephone with Yukari's Tuesday replacement? The comment and step that you did *NOT* make is more important than any comment or step that you did make. I would have much prefered to have *NO* information about the M4000 being in or out of stock rather than *INCORRECT* infomation. Then I would have continued my effort to find what I was looking for either by e-mailing or calling your store or other stores. If you can't keep important information on your web site up to day then perhaps you shouldn't display that information until you find a method that will ensure that it is correct. You stated that the M400 stock was depleted sometime on Tuesday but the web site wasn't updated until Wednesday night (actually it wasn't updated until early Thurdsay morning around the time you read my e-mail). Is two day old information what you concider to be "good enough" for a web based business? - MrReis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Digital Connection Subject: RE: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466) Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2007 15:43:42 -0800 Dear MrReis, Glad that DataOptics was able to help you fill your order, we provide some of the product they carry including the TVIX. I don't know why you got the impression that we felt your order was not important, it certainly is. Even though I realize that Yukari made a mistake and I can reprimand her for it, it still would not have resolve the issue of our being able to come up with a product we no longer had in inventory. She will certainly get a notice of her shortcomings in her position. We stive to provie the most up to date information available, and we try to provide the kind of service you expect as much as we can. If you feel there was a comment made or a step we did not take to relay our efforts, we're all ears. Best Regards, Customer Support Digital Connection -----Original Message----- From: MrReis To: Digital Connection Subject: RE: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466) K,- My order (# 41446) has been cancelled (and I have received an e-mail to confirm that). Please do not fill my cancelled order. I contacted DataOptic this morning and ordered a M4000P (they had 10 units in stock) as well as a FusionHD5 USB (also in stock) with free two-day shipping. I will recieve my order on Monday. If I had ordered these items from DataOptic on Tuseday rather than from Digial Connection, then I would have them in my position today. I used the incorrect information posted on your web site which you apparently don't think is importatnt to keep up to date to make my purchase decision. You don't even think it's important to inform your sales agent (Yukari) about what's in stock and what is not. That isn't her failure, it's her manager's failure. If your business is so great that you afford to treat your customers the way you treated me, then good for you. You can be sure that if anyone ever askes me for a recomendation of who to buy a M4000P from I will not recomend Digial Connection. - MrReis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Digital Connection To: MrReis Subject: RE: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466) Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2007 13:47:57 -0800 Dear MrReis, First, my apologies for the inability to process your order, apparently we were right at the end of the inventory when the problem occured with your order. We listed the new ETA on our store site (the front page was corrected last night) on Tuesday as soon as it became apparent that we would not have enough stock that day to process all orders. I'm not sure what transpired between the time you spoke with Yukari to when she became aware that we were out of stock on the item, it appears to me that she was not aware of the situation as she does not work on Tuesdays (the day we ran out of stock). Unfortunately, we are working to get inventory in as quickly as possible, but having some difficulty with getting a definite shipping date for our next order. If we had any inventory left to process your order, we would do so as an priority but I don't have that option at the moment. We did not charge your card and will do our best to get your order processed, but you may want to check with TVIXUSA just in case they have stock of the M4000P. Best Regards, Customer Support Digital Connection -----Original Message----- From: MrReis To: Ditital Connection Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 9:37 PM Subject: The meaning of "In Stock" on your store's web site (Order # 41466) Ms Clark,- I was referred to you by Yukari in either you customer service or sales department. I placed an order (#41466) for a M-4000P Media Player with a 250 GB hard drive yesterday via your store web site. Your web site's home page clearly showed (AND STILL SHOWS) in RED that the player is "In Stock." I placed my order based on the information. I called your sales department at 1-800-327-8049 as invited to by the order confirmation e-mail I received from your store because at 4:50 PM my order was still "Pending." I was connected to Yukari who stated that my order was "Pending" because the hard drive that I had ordered to be installed on the player was out of stock. I told Yukari to forget the hard drive and just ship the player. She said she would do that and send it via two day to make-up for the delay for the out of stock hard drive. I thanked her for that. 15 minutes later Yukari called be to tell me that the M-4000P player is out of stock and would not be in stock until March 27. When I reminder her that you web site shows that it is "In Stock" she said that some "other company" takes care of the web site. I guess she told me that because she thought I would understand that the incorrect information is not your responsibility. I very much know that it is your responsibility. You web site's home page still indicates that the player is "In Stock" (in red). This has been one of my worst customer experiences that I have ever had. If I was your manager I think that I should be copied on this e-mail. - MrReis MrReis 04-02-07, 12:43 AM big deal, so they made a mistake. what did you expect... to get a free unit out of them? they apologized 10 times. get over it, you wasted a couple days tops. there are bigger issues around the globe than a website having a 1 day delay in updating inventory!!! AA,- That's easy for you to say. I hope you have the same "Don't think twice, it's all right" attitude every time someone wastes your tiime. qz3fwd 04-02-07, 12:20 PM Yeah, get over it cause it is what it is and they cannot do much for you now. Please stop cluttering up this thread with rantings about not getting what you wanted. Cancel you order and go elsewhere. Sh*t happens. We all have ordered something and something happened where the order got screwed up. For gods sake, stop being a baby and move on. Thank You qz3fwd 04-02-07, 12:25 PM And by the way, I also ordered a 4000 from dc about the same time you did, selected expedited shipping so that I'd have it for the weekend, and later found out they were out of stock. I cancelled the order and will wait for the 4000SA+410 to come out hopefully this/next month. Boo hoo. What, did you expect them to overnight a unit from Korea to your address? Not much they can do about it other than apologize. MrReis 04-03-07, 12:42 AM The following is DViCO's response about why the M4000 can not play HDV files (HDV video from a Sony HDV camcorder captured with Sony Vagas softeware). Basicly they are telling me that I should get over it and move on. I bought their product exactly because I wanted to play HDV captures. My captuers are not "out of spec," DVICO's product does not meet their own specifications. They are the ones who state that the M4000 will play HDV video, and when it cann't they say that my file is "out of spec" without even seeing the file. And by the way, they have other projects that prevent them from fixing the problems of their current products. I hope you all buy the new product and find out that it doesn't work as advertized. It will kind of work, but not very well. And by the way, don't every complain about it, because this is a feel good forum. -------------------------------------------------------- Hello David, I am sorry about this. However, TVIX can play other regular files in same format without problem, it looks like the forat is out of spec. I know you can play files in your PC, but this is because lots of PC players can handle files not in spec. Also, currently, our engineers are working on other project including Tuner option and the next model. I don't think this will be looked by by engineers before these projectes are finished. Eventhough they check this probem, I am not sure it will be fixed or not. Regards, Eric qz3fwd 04-03-07, 08:35 AM "They are the ones who state that the M4000 will play HDV video, and when it cann't they say that my file is "out of spec" without even seeing the file." True, they should step up to the plate and "fix" the firmware to support HDV files as advertised on the webpage. Muttski 04-03-07, 12:14 PM I am planning on buying one of these so I can access DiVX and unprotected MP3s w/o having my HTPC on all the time. Looking at pictures of the 4000 and 4100 units, I see both type of USB connectors, one to hook up to the PC, the others to hookup external drives. I have three questions: 1) My HTPC is close to where I am planning on keeping the streamer, can I keep it connected to my HTPC to assist loading new content? (In other words, can it still stream while connected to the HTPC via USB.) 2) I have a lot of content spread across 4 external USB drives. Can I hook up all 4 drives to the 4000 (or 4100) device via USB hub, or am I limited to two drives directly connected to the streamer? 3) Is it possible to specify the media type when connecting to network shares? In particular, I want to be able to specify pictures from one share, and audio from another. This way my album art does not get mixed into my photos. (I don't think it would be implemented, but same question for USB devices.) -- Side note: The Tivo Desktop software allows me to specify the data type when sharing media, so it really is an implementation question. Thanks in advance for your time and input. MrReis 04-03-07, 01:23 PM I am planning on buying one of these so I can access DiVX and unprotected MP3s w/o having my HTPC on all the time. Nope, when the USB port is active the M4000 is ONLY a USB drive (this is in the user manual). 2) I have a lot of content spread across 4 external USB drives. Can I hook up all 4 drives to the 4000 (or 4100) device via USB hub, or am I limited to two drives directly connected to the streamer? Again Nope. The M4000 does not detect USB hubs (I asked DViCO this same question). -dr Muttski 04-03-07, 02:26 PM Thanks for your reply. I can understand there may be problems enumerating drives behind a hub, but given that challenge, I would think that they would spend a few dollars and add in the additional USB ports. (At least 4 ports, more preferred. ;)) As a side note, this is not unique to the Tivx streamers; the NetGear EVA8000 will not drives behind a hub - and won't see external drives with embedded hubs. I know that I can swap out disks depending on what I plan on viewing, but my goal is to have everything at hand w/o running my computer 7/24. Hard drives in enclosures are much cheaper than a NAS solution, and in this case, the only place I need to access the data is via a streamer to my entertainment center. --- I'll duplicate this post in the feature request forum. The additional USB ports would be a strong factor in my purchase decision. I do think the 4100 could be able to supprt 4 drives, but not entirely sure (check the 4100/5100 thread or ask DVICO). The 4000 do not support 4 drives. I do not think it is possible to specify media type when using network shares. At least I have never experienced it. What you could do is to use SFU or another NFS server and set up a share for each media type. When done, you can easily change between shares on the remote (button 1 thru 4). 1 for audio, 2 for pictures, 3 for movies etc... However, in MY post, I guess you did not see where I stated that I did not see much TALK about the 4000PM model. Perhaps my words have mislead you in some way. To be more on the clear side, I was referring to the lack of discussion from actual users of the 4000PA model, as a forum search does not bring up any info. I have seen the pics, and I have noticed the mention of the optional tuner. However, my discussion is based on the internals and operations of the unit compared to the 4000P unit. My hopes as mentioned in my above posts are that they are the same. I hope this clears up any confussion you may have. Thanks Rob HighPost 04-05-07, 03:51 PM They have got to be the same internals and operations of the 4000p. They are not going to re-write a new firmware for this box and buy new components. That would be crazy for time, money, construction and testing. This box must have the same firmware as the 5000U and 4000P. I the only differance should be more functionality, not less. I would also assume that the 4000p's would gain the wireless lan abilty with the newer firmware also, as the the only change between the two is the the added spot on the 4000pa to put in the HD Tuner. Other than that, the components should be exactly the same. I would not worry about losing anything, they are only going to add stuff. Like wireless LAN and HD Tuner. So if the 4000P did everything you wanted, than the 4000PA will do everything you wanted too, and more. :) And you are not going to see anything on the 4000PA as it just barely came out. robo74 04-05-07, 05:37 PM And you are not going to see anything on the 4000PA as it just barely came out. Some issues, but overall it works great, except I CANNOT Figure out how to change the audio language track on ISO files. Subtitles works great, but I can't change to Audio languages for the life of me. My kids are bilingual, so I purchase every Disney movie in Chinese and rip them to ISO so they don't destroy them. They watch only Language 2 on the ISOs (Chinese) but I can't figure out what button to push to switch audio tracks? Can it be done? Please Help! Then a couple days later I come back and start watching my show, will it start back up at the same spot? My iPod does, so I would think this will too and this is a bigger, more powerful machine. At least I would hope it would but does anyone know? Thanks. Meenenator 04-07-07, 12:55 PM Does this thing remember where you are at. When you press the bookmark button you can choose which one, and start off from you stopped the last time. M. Steinhot 04-08-07, 05:47 PM Well, you can use "bookmark". So far, this "feature" is one of the things that drives me crazy. Say, I am watching an ISO movie. Then stop. Then go into another movie, it starts the movie in the middle (about the same distance into the movie that I stopped the one before)--even though I didn't ever play it? Steinhot 04-08-07, 05:50 PM I am using the latest firmware and after bouncing around to a few ISO's, it now can't run any iso until I turn it off and back on again. I see what you mean about the bookmarking and ISO files. The only solution seems to be not to press bookmark while playing an ISO unless you intend to come back to the same one before turning the TViX off again. It does work with TP files, however. Meenenator 04-08-07, 07:00 PM I didn't know about the audio button either... goodie... I'm not totally following you wrt ISO and bookmarks (no need to explain though). As far as I know when playing an ISO file and stop it, it will return to the same time if you start it again, UNLESS you have started another ISO or IFO/VOB file in the meantime. If you do stop it and want to play something else I would assume it will be stored in the bookmarks as any other movie. (to RIP I use ANYDVD-HD does this task) I don't think the Tvix will play the evo files but I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it. I have been able to demux evo files into elementary streams and have the Tvix M-4000U play them. But this only works for those that use MPEG2 compression. If they use H264/AVC compression, the Tvix M-4000U won't play them. TPeterson 04-22-07, 02:22 AM calvin-- That is an excellent way to let them know of your interests because it communicates with the engineers in charge of product development. jofa 04-22-07, 03:27 AM Yes, that is what I mean with "mail converstion". You write in My Q&A, and receives emails.... I'm curious to see if they will do anything at all with the 4000/5000 firmware now that they have new products... /J calvin_hobbes 04-22-07, 09:27 PM I think (and by think i actually mean aimlessly speculate) that they will may use the existing m4000/5000 firmware as base for 4100/5100 (even though the base chipset will be different). They cannot afford to loose all the work they've done to point to stabalize firmware. dcushing 04-23-07, 11:36 PM I currently have my Tvix connected to a DLink DIR-635 Router via a hub. As long as the server and the hub are plugged into the router, everything works fine, if I plug the server into a different hub (or if there is more than one hub in the system between the Tvix and the server) then I can't stream anything and connection is bad. Everything was good until I decided to upgrade to a Gigabit router (DLink Dir 655). Now it doesn't matter where anything is plugged in, I can't stream video, music or pictures. Anybody know any tricks? I am temporarily using the old setup because it works. Thanks Dave TVIXBox 04-24-07, 12:08 PM Hi, my name is Paul Valente. I work at TVIX Box and we sell the M-4000 units. About your networking issue, can you tell us anything else about your network? Are you using DHCP or static addresses? If DHCP, which machine is the DHCP server in both setups? Anything else you can tell about the network setup will help. Thanks, Paul Valente TVIX Box TVIXBox 04-24-07, 12:13 PM Just a quick question here: We have the new firmware for the 4000/5000 on our website for download (2.1.0). We also have the latest Netshare 1.08. These came out a little while ago. The firmware has some improvements to the wireless networking ability of the player via a USB wireless LAN adapter. Jofa, Is there any other way to let them know this issue? I submitted the bug too at MyQ&A website. I looked at the “Dvico TViX HD M-5000 Feature Request/Bug List” thread here at the forum and it seems this issue has been around for a long time so I doubt Tvix will actually fix it. They seem to not want to touch the code for the ISO functionality. I asked them if they could add DD or DTS to the onscreen text when pushing the Audio button (something like “DTS 5.1 EN”) but they told me to push the Info button to get the information. This seems like such an easy enhancement (they are obviously already pulling this information from the ISO for the Info button) and it would save folks like me the trouble of having to hit the Audio button and then the Info button to find a DTS track on a DVD ISO. cschlik 04-24-07, 02:35 PM I currently own the 4k and it streams IFO and ISO dvd rips without problem from my NAS. I have one question though... I have a HTPC running Vista premium which records ATSC and analog cable. At this point the 4k does not seem to recognize the file type of the recordings (mapped NFS share to My Recordings dir). Does this constitute a DRM issue? Unsupported file type? or Unsupported file extension (ms-dvr?) Any chance this might work in the future? Now My question: How to have the player play JUST ONE movie and at the end, go back to the menu ?? Thanks for your help Martin I am traveling so I have not had a chance to get back and test on a 4000 for you .. . but I tried this on a TVIX Box C-2000 Lite. Here is how it works on the 2000 and you can try and see if this works on the 4000 in a similar or different way. PLAY BUTTON If you navigate through the files and then highlight one FILE and press PLAY > on the remote it will play then continue on to play the next file in the folder when the first is complete. When it has reached the end of the last file in the folder it will start to play the first file in the folder again, then proceed to the next, etc, continuously. If you navigate and select one FOLDER and press PLAY > on the remote it will play all the files consecutively in folder and when finished with the last one it will move on to the next folder, ie "../next_folder/first_file" relative to the file it just finished playing. Not sure what it does when it reaches the last file in the last folder, as I have to many files on this box to practiacally test that . . I also have not tested folder within folder behavior for now. OK BUTTON If you navigate through the files and then highlight one FILE and press OK on the remote it will play the highlighted file then STOP. (I think this is what the Fly-Tox is after . . .) If you navigate and select one FOLDER press OK on the remote, it will merely execute the folder - that is it will display its contents on the screen. It will not "play" without further button presses. Hope this helps. If, when I have a chance, someone has not yet answered this question I will try it on a 4000 and post. The picture will move when you use the scroll, however the issue is still that part of the image is cropped or cut off. Eventually you have to come to a compromise between the left and right side, but I guess it's better than nothing. However while in the main TViX menus, the right side is still cropped with no chance of scrolling. While using the the wallpaper creator to create wallpapers for movies, the text is cut on the right side by a letter or two. I'll see by how many pixels later on. I'm using DVI --> HDMI at 720p. I'll try composite and see how it works out, but still quite disappointing. TPeterson 05-29-07, 01:11 AM In that case, you need to use the centering adjustments in your display device. You may also need to adjust the display device's overscan if you're seeing the picture cut off, because if it doesn't fit that must mean that your display is re-scaling the frame to a larger size in order to produce the "usual" TV picture overscan. importtuner 05-29-07, 07:49 AM In that case, you need to use the centering adjustments in your display device. I remember it used to be a pain having to reconvert shows and resize them to adjust for overscan. At least someone else thinks so. Another thing I was wondering, I was playing an ISO on an external HDD via USB and throughout the film there were moments where the picture turned black for a second and then resumed. Think of it as if you blinked your eyes...just like a second or so. Playing back the ISO hooked uo to my computer and it plays fine. Haven't had any issues so far. AVI files on the same external played flawlessly. Anyone else have this issue with ISO playback? I remember some issues from it, but I don't remember this sort of issue in particular. I guess I'll try ripping it again, but for now I can only conclude that USB Host may not be perfected.....at least in my case. Overall though, great player and so far my 500GB is filled and my 200GB is starting to fill up. Mainly using for DVD ISOs, so that fills up fast. Both of formats will "play" the digital hiss (just like when the DTS WAV is played on the computer). I have asked them to also support the .dts file extension but have only got a "maybe" as answer. /J originalsnuffy 08-10-07, 07:41 AM For what it is worth; I also play DTS audio-only files with my TVIX 5000. My upstairs denon has no problem with these wav files with DTS. However, my downstairs Onkyo Integra does not accept the same signals with the 4000 configured essentially the same way. My point is that the issue could well be the receiver no liking the format from the TVIX. I was able to resolve DTS playback from a HTPC with the Onkyo Integra by setting the AC3filter to 14bit padded mode. Perhaps we need to ask DVICO/TVIX to look at creating a similar mode for future bios updates (of course now that they seem to treat the 4000 and 5000 as stable we may be pushing on string). mtucker 08-10-07, 10:51 AM Thanks for the replies about DTS playback. My problem was user error. I had four versions of that file on my hard drive. 1. The original WAV, 2. A WMA version, 3. a FLAC version, and 4. a AAC (MP4) version. The FLACK and WMA gave me hiss. THe AAC said loading and gave a different sounding hiss. I thought the WAV version wasn't working at all because it didn't even give me hiss. However, the WAV file I downloaded had silence for about 10 seconds and then slowly faded in so it took about 20 seconds for me to hear anything at my volume setting. I didn't think it was working. It seem like a shame to waste all that hard drive space on a WAV file that just contains compressed audio (DTS). I will try ripping one of my DTS audio disks to WAVs and see how it goes. Thanks, Matt bburtin 08-13-07, 05:40 PM Is anyone else having problems with skipping around in .ts files? I use MythTV to record over-the-air ATSC and use my M-4000P to play them. Playing and pausing consistently work well, but rewind, fast forward, skip and goto are really dicy. When rewinding these files, I've seen the Tvix lock up, skip large sections of the file, fast forward instead of rewinding, display the wrong timestamp, etc. This happens over both NFS and USB. I tried contacting Dvico tech support last week and never got a response. I'm currently on firmware 2.1.4A. Edit: Heh. I just took another look at Dvico's firmware download page and see that the the list of changes in 2.2.0 has "Improved file compatibility". Somehow I missed that the first time around. I'll try upgrading the firmware to see if it helps. TPeterson 08-13-07, 05:46 PM Proper handling of FF/RW is an issue with all of the Sigma Designs-based streamers to date. How about this one: I'm trying to upgrade the firmware (without the expectation that it will solve my ff/rew problem). When I plug the Tvix into my XP laptop's USB port, the Tvix says "USB ON" but I don't see a new drive in explorer. The instructions claim that "Your system will recognize the TViX HD as an external hard drive." I also don't see a USB drive in the Device Manager. Has anyone encountered this problem? TPeterson 08-14-07, 01:41 AM I haven't seen that problem. BTW, are you plugging the TViX in as an external USB HDD to copy the fwp file to the TViX internal HDD? You could alternatively copy the fwp to a USB flash drive and upgrade the fw directly from there after moving it to the TViX. jofa 08-14-07, 03:15 AM Great. Well, at least I know it's not just me. My wife was complaining about a horrible smell of burning electronics or plastics coming from our family room. It took some tracking down as my racks are pretty full, but I found that the TVix was fried. I run mine diskless BTW and it was purchased in late Feb. Fortunately Digital Connection got me an RMA quickly. They seemed to indicate that this was a common mode of failure. I pity the person that opens the box. The smell was just awful. So now I wait. :( Tim Smith 09-15-07, 05:11 PM Thanks TPeterson. I'll give that a try tonight. kcgr, if your rack is so full do you think it might have overheated and then fried? I tried hooking up both a 4000 and a 5000 to the same vista PC in order to transfer files. Basically the goals was to synchronize both machines. Anyway, the vista machine was willing to communicate with either the 4000 or 5000, but not both at the same time. I ran chckdsk on both, and still had the problem. Basically, with one machine plugged in, it would not recognize the other. Said the USB driver had problems. Or if I got both to be recognized, then when I tried to transfer files, the vista pc would report that the files were no longer in their original location...so no transfer possible. Matt Tim Smith 10-03-07, 03:24 PM If you've checked your output device's centering and/or tried the TViX on a different display with the same result, did you contact your vendor about an RMA exchange? I've tested it on a Toshiba plasma and 720p worked but 480p did not. Digital Connections thinks that if the 4000 had auto-edid (like the 4100) it would work. I'm not sure what auto-edid does though. To me it seems like a synch problem because at 720p the screen occasionally goes black or it goes blue (which is my projectors default screen). My guess is exchanging the unit won't help and DC didn't even recommend trying this. I'm hoping DVICO will have a solution but I might be SOL. TPeterson 10-03-07, 04:07 PM I'm still suspicious that it may be an individual-unit problem, especially if you're seeing problematic synching on two different displays. I've not seen many reports of this sort of thing on AVS Forum TViX threads, so it doesn't sound as if it's a generic problem. Tim Smith 10-03-07, 08:12 PM Thanks. If I hook up my basic cable to it should pull down the NTSC channels and the unlocked ATSC channels, correct? Then I can use the item as a DVR for SD and HD channels? more of a question that I can curious about is... did anyone find a way to play commercial DVDs from an external DVD drive. I know why they put the blocks on there so people won't recorded HD movies and sell them but this product promotes ripping of dvds. you wanna talk about a gray line (I know its not illegal to back-up your personal DVDs). This unit would be a Outstanding if it could play DVDs from an external drive. Then it would be perfect media center in my opinion! Please let me know. Thank you for your time. TPeterson 10-04-07, 09:57 AM The tuner is digital OTA only, so it won't do either of the things you mentioned. You can play any DVD in an external drive that doesn't have CSS copy protection. (Good luck finding one) OTOH, you can play DVDs over LAN that are in PC DVD drives as long as you have an on-the-fly unscrambling program, such as AnyDVD or DVD43, installed. Everton27 10-04-07, 11:47 AM oh no! There goes my hopes and dreams. So the tuner that I can buy for one of these units are only good for Over the air (Antenna) channels. That is a waste of time for most of us because the HD TVs have them built it. We want the DVR feature because our cable company is ripping us off for their DVR. The HTPC software are only good for OTA channels too. So my only option here is the Sony DHG-HDD series or a Tivo. Yay for monthly fees! so I guess I have to face the facts and I can't be cheap anymore. It is truly a sad day for me. But I would like to thank you for helping me! Many complaints about noise and reliability. A shame, because having 2 TB for "cheap" would be cool. TPeterson 11-21-07, 01:19 AM Thanks for the confirmation of my fears. I already have one NAS (Dlink DSM-G600) that sits unused most of the time because I can't stand having its noisy fan going constantly. I don't understand why designers of "home" NAS products have such a blind spot about that problem. ("Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?") MattNelson 11-21-07, 12:31 PM There are only 4 reviews and the only negative comment is for noise. That one sounded like a bad unit. No one mentions reliability. Where does everyone keep their NAS units? I like to hide all of my Routers, cable modems, NAS unit and other network stuff in a closet that has all of my cable & cat5 wiring. TPeterson 11-21-07, 12:41 PM You can hide it from your ears in the basement, but not from your electric meter. ;) contactadam2002 11-25-07, 12:40 PM I am unable to use the pal firmware update 2.20 (claims its not a valid fwd file, despite repeating the downloads), only the ntsc one seems to work. I am using a SANS DIGITAL MN2L (about $200.) I have it set for NFS and it works great. No studdering with DVD ISOs, HD TS or AVI files. I popped in two 500GB SATA drives and have 1TB of space. Total cost $400. http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilenas/mn2l.html Matt; I just bought one and also dropped in a couple of 500gig drives.. so far I like it. How did you configure for NFS -- I keep getting a error connecting to disk. I setup my Sans Digital as static IP: 192.168.1.8 NFS enabled with the subnet allowed : 192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0 under the share 'video' do I need any specific user/group accounts enabled? on the TViX - i set the NFS fast server : video IP : 192.168.1.8 can't get it working? I can get it to work via SAMBA but I don't want to use that. thanks for any help... Largow 01-17-08, 08:05 AM 'lo all, I have had the Tvix M-4000PA for a few months now, but lately it is performing not as good as before. It stutters a lot with SMB, NFS is even worse (1 frame per sec or so?). The cause could be that I moved my Synology NAS to the attic, and there are now 2 switches between the Syno and the Tvix. This used to be one. Also 1 switch is 10/100/1000, the other 10/100. It's connected like this: NAS -> 1000mbit -> 100mbit(also router) -> Tvix Another cause could be cable length, in total around 50 meters between the 2 devices. This used to be 35-40. Now if I connect the NAS directly to the 100mbit switch/router all works fine. But that means my file transfers between NAS and PC (also on the 1000mbit) take twice as long. Is it really the 15 extra meters of cable, or is using too many (different) switches the problem? Or did I overlook something? originalsnuffy 02-18-08, 10:16 PM Here is a strange one. I am using the TViX Netshare program on my PC to serve my 4000 and 5000. The network is Linksys powerline. I can get a great hi def stream of .tp files from the PC. But when I play DVD files from the PC, I get stutters and the like. The files are in video_ts folders, with iso and vob and the like file structures. I don't think there is anything special about how they were transferred to the hard drive. Guess I'll just go back to copying the files directly to the hard disc in the 5000 and 4000 for DVD file formats. No, I have not tried running both the 4000 and 5000 simultaneously. The only person in the house who uses the units is me. And as the Firesign Theater points out, "how can you be in two places at once when you are really no place at all?" Meenenator 02-20-08, 10:15 AM Personally I use DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter for ripping my DVDs. If I want to really make an effort I open the ripped DVD in DVDRebuilder and remove the stuff I do not want, including menu-buttons, extras, trailers etc. It do takes a little while to get the hang of it, but worth the effort. I now can make an exact copy of the movie but only keep the audio I want etc. and hence save space on the HDD. Both the first tools will rip to a ISO if you choose so. I use DVDShrink less and less as it has limited capability in removing unwanted material (extras and trailers). chris98007 02-20-08, 12:51 PM i second meenenators comments. I have a file server with 6 hard drives. I mount different folders in the tvixhd1 using xp and junctionlink magic. All the files show up on tvix in one location. I have now run out of room. The easy thing to do is add a external usb hd enclosure, though i have a 2nd pc qith 7 open hd bays. What i want to do is link pc2 with pc1. Now i know i can map a network drive to pc1 though tvix does not see it. I dont really want to enter a second ip in tvix becasue that affects the wife factor. junctionlink sees drives on the network though when you try and link it, it just drops a shortcut in the tvix folder. Is there a way to mount a mapped hard drive to make it a local drive?? I feel like i am missing a step. chris98007 03-18-08, 12:23 AM wow not to many people in here anymore! I have another question. I've never used that output on my M-5000! Why would you be looking critically at such a setup? If you're talking about YPbPr, I haven't noticed any lateral black level shift or change in contrast here. But I've only rarely used other than the DVI output, which certainly has no such issues. Its on iso files. there is a 2 inch wide stripe from top to bottom. You can see it more on dark scenes. I have the lcd set to native and i see it on all my isos. What is strange is that i have a setting for 4:3 hd which shrinks the picture to a 4:3. Now the stripe goes with the picture. If that makes sense. 16:9 its on the upper right down to the bottom. 4:3 its the same only 4:3 so this would tell me that its coming from the source not the display. TPeterson 03-19-08, 01:14 PM How long is the video cable run? Can you try a different cable and/or a shorter run? If that doesn't change it, I suspect that there's a problem with the TViX' video output circuit and it's then time to talk about an RMA with your dealer. chris98007 03-19-08, 01:22 PM the cable run is 3 or 6 feet. Tvix still uses english as preferred lang. for dvd playback. awatson 12-13-08, 02:14 PM I've had a M-4000 for a year or two now, and while it generally works well, there's one problem that is very frustrutrating. I generally only watch MPEG2 videos, most of which are recorded on a Hauppauge HVR-1600 tuner, but some are home videos also. In most cases they play fine, but every so often a file will refuse to play and just shows a pixelated pink screen instead. I've checked the file with every tool I have on the PC and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the file. They always play fine on the PC. Usually I can get the file to play on the M-4000 by trimming off a second or two from the start of the file in VideoRedo, and resaving. I'm using the current 2.2.7 firmware. I tried the older 2.1 firmware and it had no problems playing the same "pink screen" videos. Unfortunately, that firmware would not output audio for my HD recordings with AC3 audio, and would not outut video for some of my DivX. So I reinstalled 2.2.7. Has anyone else encountered this? I don't get the impression Dvico is going to update the firmware, so is there any way to fix my files so they'll play without trimming frames from the start? Thanks, Anthony mallorcavip 12-14-08, 10:10 AM Hi all, This is my first post and after reading for a while I could not find an answer to my question. I own a Dvico 4000 and I am going to buy a new tv, probably a sony 40w4500 ( I currently own a 29" old sony crt). I am using the dvico to watch downloaded movies .avi with a resolution of 640x480. My question is, will the contents be rescale to a full-hd properly, will the quality be good or should I buy the 6500A? Do you know if its better a 37" or a 40" for these rescaling. I don´t want to have a bad quality on those films. Any suggestions on the TV's for a distance of 2.5 meters? Many thanks to all MallorcaVIP awatson 12-14-08, 11:36 AM mallorcavip, My M-4000P is connected to my 42" Samsung plasma using a DVI to HDMI cable and an optical cable for audio. I use 720p as the video output setting on the M-4000P and digital output for all audio formats (my receiver decodes all the formats). Obviously, HD material looks better on the 42" plasma, whether it be 1280x720, 1440x1080, or full 1920x1080. But I also watch a lot of 720x480 SD material from analog TV stations and ripped DVD's and it still looks and scales nicely. Not as nice as HD, of course, but you can't make up picture that isn't there. The only downside is the black bars on each side of the 4:3 material, but that's easy to live with. I think I have a few 640x480 music videos and those look decent as well. Anthony originalsnuffy 01-21-09, 10:39 AM I am about to put the 4000 and 5000 back on to the network in ftp mode. If I recall, every so often this corrupt the hard drive directory. Can somebody remind me the tool in XP that one should use to get things up and running again if this happens? Thanks. TPeterson 01-21-09, 12:08 PM Run CHKDSK <x>: /F (where <x> is your TViX' drive letter) either from a CMD window or via Properties of Windows Explorer (where you effect the "/F" part by checking the box to "automatically fix file system errors" for which you need to close the MSWE window to that drive first) originalsnuffy 02-01-09, 01:46 PM Thank you TPeterson. Say...If I recall there was a firmware 2.27. My 4000 and 5000 are still at 2.20. I have a vague recollection that 2.2.7 did not do anything beyond add some recording capability. Is that correct? The reason I ask....I have always had a love/hate thing going with the GOTO command section. The device often freezes when I use this command. Just wondering if that was improved in the latest firmware revision. TPeterson 02-01-09, 02:39 PM I don't recall. I do know that trick play generally has issues even in the latest firmwares on all of the Sigma Designs-based players that I've seen (from DViCo and elsewhere). But I don't think that it actually got worse with any updates on the M-5000. originalsnuffy 02-18-09, 09:17 AM My powerline ethernet system decided to start working again....so I have been fooling a bit with network streaming of video. The Tvix units can see the first share in netshare, but not the others that I set up. Is this typical? In other words, I told it to share a folder call audio, then one call video, but it only "sees" the audio share. Also, any tips on streaming from a D-Link DNS 321 unit? The unit has FTP and upnp capabilities, which I tried enabling. Still, no luck getting any feeds from this NAS like unit. I did the simple stuff like getting the ip address correct (hey, you have to be able to do that to "talk" to the PC!)....but no joy otherwise. As many of you know...with networking I am somewhere in between a newbie and an advanced user...but usually get there with brute force! Thanks. awatson 02-18-09, 10:43 AM The Tvix units can see the first share in netshare, but not the others that I set up. Is this typical? In other words, I told it to share a folder call audio, then one call video, but it only "sees" the audio share. If all shares are on the same PC, and you can access the first share, it would seem the network connections are working properly. Are you using the current version of Netshare that allows you to share four different folders? Each share should show up as a little box just to the right of the "Network" icon at the top of the M4000 screen. Press the "left" keypad key on your remote, then select the network icon. You can then use the up/down keypad keys to switch between the different shares. Anthony originalsnuffy 02-19-09, 10:18 PM Yes, I am running Netshare 2.1.0.1., the most recent version. But only the first share shows up. Each box on the menu is associated with a different FTP or Samba network connection. I tried putting the same FTP code generated by netshare in a few of these, but they all still point at the first shared folder. TPeterson 02-20-09, 12:02 AM Snuff, I don't have a 4000, but I wonder if you're going about this the right way. Netshare's 4 folder shares are named "tvixhdN", where N ranges from 1 to 4. If you want to access the second folder from a given Netshare set you would then enter "tvixhd2" into the share name field on the TViX' network setup dialog that's pointed to that PC's IP address. Is that what you are doing and it's not working? It does work that way on the M-6500A, as I just confirmed for myself. originalsnuffy 02-20-09, 11:25 PM TPeterson; Your logic seems correct. I did not set it up this way. Will try it and will report back. Bet you are correct. Any thoughts on how to connect to the D-Link NAS anybody? TPeterson 02-21-09, 02:19 PM Snuff, the TViX doesn't support streaming from UPnP or FTP servers, so you need to establish an SMB share with the D-Link device. On my D-Link GSM-D600 this works exactly the same as when sharing from a PC. You need to enter the D-Link's IP address and the name of the top-level share that it exposes to the LAN. Then you should be able to browse its folders from the TViX. (At least this is the way it works on the M-6500A. I expect that the M-4000 has essentially the same setup) originalsnuffy 02-23-09, 09:39 AM TPeterson; You are right, the issue was the naming convention with TVIXHD1,2,etc. The DNS-321 can be shared using Samba, looking for "Volume_1". filoudoporto 03-02-09, 12:42 PM hello I want to know if I can connect to my tvix 4000 by internet ? Because I managed to connect from my local network but not outside (internet). what I want, is to connect from my work on my TViX 4000 is at home. Is it possible? Thanks for your help et and sorry for my poor english... Filoudoporto TPeterson 03-02-09, 01:03 PM Filoudoporto-- You need to set up your home router to expose the TViX to the Internet to access it from the WAN side. I'm pretty sure that this is possible, although I'm not sure that it's a good idea. TVIXBox 03-03-09, 01:19 PM The only way to access it is via FTP using a port forward from your router (same as what TPeterson said). It has been a while since I plugged in one of these units but my memory is telling me there is no way to change the ftp user/password pair from the default, do don't do this if you have anything you don't want the whole world to see on there. If there is anything of a private nature you should go with a different solution - VPN or simply put the data on a different machine that can be secured properly. CineLoic 03-30-09, 02:59 AM Hi, I've just tried to change the hard disk of my M4000-P. Here is my problem : i can see the box when connected through usb to my computer, and all my files. But when connected to the tv, the Tvix is unable to see the file ... Got the latest firmware 2.2.7, hard disk ntfs, single master, folders names ok. New hard disk is a 500 Go western digital caviar blue. Someone's here got an idea for me ? Thanks guys, Loïc TPeterson 03-30-09, 03:56 AM I take it that you formatted the HDD in a PC. What is the cluster size? I don't know what, if any, limits TViX puts on that parameter, but if you made non-default clusters that would be my first guess as the problem source. Next would be the MBR--is it standard? CineLoic 03-30-09, 04:41 AM Formatted in a pc yes. Is there another option ? Is it possible to format the drive "through"(?) the Tvix to avoid any cluster or partition size problem ? I'm ready to format it again if needeed Thanks TPeterson TPeterson 03-30-09, 11:43 AM Effectively, no. Unlike some devices that have formatting routines built in, the TViX HDD is always formatted via another OS, be it Mack, Windows, or Linux. But you can do the job with the HDD inside the TViX, via the host USB connection. I'm not sure that this would avoid the problem that you're seeing if you were to choose the same formatting parameters, but if you use Windows and leave everything at the default values you should be OK. CineLoic 03-31-09, 04:26 AM Ok, i will try this again But found another thread on this forum http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=778342 that is possibly quit annoying.
