Basically it's the Tvix 5000 in a different case.

The japanese manual mentions 2 versions.....TViX M-4000S & TViX M-4000P.... the S version taking a SATA drive and the P taking an IDE drive.

Check out the new TViX HD M-4000P at the official DVICO-website: crap, I can't make a link, because I'm a new member.. So, it's like the M-5000A, with the outer look of the M-3100U, but has a different remote (pitty).

I like this form factor a LOT better.

Are there any places in the USA which carry this model already?

Wow I'm with Axel... I do like this form factor better... and I don't know about the 5000's remote, but this remote is pretty!

Still no wireless?

mpjohnst
11-11-06, 02:53 PM
I'll third the sentiment about the form-factor... it is definitely much improved over the coffee can version! I don't care as much about wireless because I live in a big apartment building with cluttered b/g bands. I have to use wired regardless. What I do worry about is stability...

Can anyone confirm that this player has the same internals/firmware of the 5000U series? It took a good while before it was performing up to snuff but the constant stream of firmware updates have really turned it into a pretty decent box. I would hate to start from scratch with the 4000U...

Also, is the 4000U supposed to be cheaper than the 5000U? It was my understanding that TVIX will soon be releasing the 5101U that adds support for H.264/AVC. I'm hoping that it will fill the pricepoint of the current line and be even higher in price. If so, it would make sense that the 4000U retails for less.... maybe $250-$300?

The TViX 4000 will retail for less than the 5000U. Money will be saved by adding a cheaper remote for instance. (of which I have a very detailed picture, but I am not able to post a link to it, because I'm a new member  )

So I get the idea that people are really fond of the M-5000's remote... what's so great about it? I thought it was a bit gawdy, but I never owned it. This 4000 remote is sexy.

The most significant difference is that M5000A may eventually get a HDTV tuner add-on (crossing fingers), there are no such options on the M4000.

When can we order the tuner-I need 2?

the tuner turns the "player" into a recorder also.

The TV tuner will allow you to record programs. Effectively turning the 5000 into a DVR. (i.e. basic tivo)

I've got a Comcast DVR already so I doubt I would use this but it is a neat feature for many people.

Yesterday I asked the following (my Q&A of DVICO):

Hello,

I am unable to browse folders while playing music (mp3). When I do this, the music stops, which is not what a player of this kind is supposed to do! Can this be fixed on the M-4000P which I am planning to buy?
Can you add the Dutch language to the firmware or future firmware of the M-4000P?

Thank you for your time!

Mathijs
I got the following answer:

Hello Mathijs,

Currently, you can not browse other folders while you listen audio files. We do have a plan to support this features.

About M4000P,
The firmware of M4000P will be same as M5000A. Currently, M5000 does not have an option for Dutch, but I believe you can see the Dutch characters without problem. We can add Dutch option, but we need the request from our Sales. I will check but I am not sure we will add or not.

Eric

After looking at the Tvix 4000 and 5xxx's it seems to be the only differences are:

- Different case / form factor
- Different remote
- 5xxx's will have a optional HD turner available

But they will run the same firmware and otherwise be identical.

Is that correct or am I missing something ?

I'm in the market for a couple streamers right now and it seems the Tvix 4000 or Mvix 760HD are the best choices. (decent price and can stream ripped dvds - (ifo w/ vobs))

thanks..

The "base" unit comes without a HDD. So you can put in whatever you like, as long as it is an ATA (=parallel) drive.

I am planning on dumping my HTPC for a separate Oppo DVD player and a dedicated media player.
I liked the HTPC because I ran Windows MCE and used the MyMovies plugin to play DVDs off the network.

From what I've read, the TViX's are great at this. Anyone have a direct comparison between this and an HTPC running MyMovies?
I like the fact that this new unit is only $249. I don't care about adding an HD tuner. So if this is really the same thing as it's more expensive brother, it looks great. I may preorder it today.

it is my understanding that firmware for 5000 and 4000 is exactly the same. And since 5000 firmware has gone through plenty of rigorous field testing (by all you kind folks), it seems that downloading latest firmware for 5000 on 4000 should give us a big jumpstart.

... just as mathijs and calvin_hobbes said, same reasoning for me.
If it was otherwise I would stay away from it - for the time being. Just by looking at the current crop of media player offerings out there, most manufacturers, including the very reputable ones, seem to struggle to get their products working properly.

petboh - do you have any MPEG-2 Transport Stream (.ts) files?

I played a movie (about some guys that used to fight in ancient Rome ;) ) last night that I have as 129 100 MB .ts files. I made 3 DVD-R discs with 43 files each and put them into the JVC/AVeL player. The good news is that it played them all correctly, in order, in 1080i and it looked great. The bad news is that it stopped after each one (each file only plays for about 1 minute and 12 to 20 seconds!!!) and displayed the next filename against a black screen, and then started playing the next file. In other words, it does not seamlessly play the files in order and "pre-load" the next file so that it does not have to stop and then start the next file, with these small annoying gaps in between.

I am very keen to find out how the TViX M-4000P handles these kinds of files in this way as it's very common to find movies and TV programs as multiple .ts files rather than one single large one.

As a result of this thread, I have decided to pre-order from Kei. *smile*

I pray the 4000 is a strong and reliable player that can play hours of continues SD and HD video from its internal drive.

2nd) Others have mentioned that there will be a P or S unit and that each is simply either an IDE HDD connection or SATA HDD connection - could anyone confirm this??
- If so, which would anyone prefer??
Yes, the owners manual states:
TViX M-4000S model is supporting the SATA hard disk and M-4000P model is supporting the
PATA(General IDE) hard disk.
Personally, I would much prefer SATA over IDE. I hope the one I pre-ordered is a SATA unit.

BIG QUESTION:
Will the 4000p be able to PLAY ALL videos located in a folder 1 by 1 until it reaches the last video and then stop?

I just read the manual and I did not see anywhere how this can be accomplished.

*Armor on*

Just spoke to DVICO and they are going to fix a problem in production on fan noise issues that was reported by early users, which will delay the shipment. New ETA (shipping from our office) is the day after Christmas (cringe).

Hi all,

Another forum Noobie here. Been reading it for hours now. I just bought the HP MediaVault and have encoded all my family videos and dvd's to DivX 6.2. Will this unit play them well over the network (hard wired not wireless) from my NAS unit?

I just hardwired my house with a full gigabit network and am wondering if it would be wise to wait til these players come out with gigabit, what do you think?

Also does anyone have any good links where to buy these in the USA?

Thanks for all your hard work and helpful advice.

Thank You Originalsnuffy. I just had to cancel my order on a Rapsody N35 because it will not work with my MediaVault NAS :( It was a toss up between the N35 and the M-4000, looks like the M-4000 is the winner.

I hope my pre-order went through at Digital Connection...browser sat forever on the final purchase page then kicked me to the logon page. Maybe Kei could check it for me :) email has the same name as my user name here.

Ok, I've done some research for a networked media player and there are so many, all promising so much, that I'm not sure which way to go anymore.

The one question I have for this unit is : can it access my NAS folders without installing any sort of PC software that would force me to keep a PC running ? Please keep in mind my NAS doesn't offer DLNA, so this unit has to be able to access a regular shared Windows folder.

The TViXen do require (with the current firmware) that you install an NFS server, iff you need to play back HD files at >10 Mbps, but they can access and play lower bit-rate files directly from SMB NAS folders.

You can access from tvix using either NFS or Samba. If your NAS do support NFS you should be fine (I think). The tvix now have user-selectable share-names so you should be able to access all your NAS-data without a PC.
Samba should also work, but it may be slower. There is a lot of discussion in the Tvix 5000 thread here, so check it out.

I'm using a readyNas X6 and the tvix (NFS) and it works great.

How did you get your hands on the 4000? How is it with hdmi at 1080p--do you get the green sparklies?

With regard to your problem; did you try to put the files into a hard drive to see if the files are the problem? That would isolate your issue to files vs. networking.

I have been fiddling a little bit with my newly purchased box and I can say I'm truly amazed. It playbacks all my avi-files like a charm and iso-movies works surprisingly well.

Im a little surprised that you are afraid of noise from the HD. I installed a Seagate 320 GB IDE-disk and from what I have experienced it's very silent even compared with the built in fan.

Has anyone tried an USB DVD-player with this box? Can I operate the player with the remote? Or playing movies that is.

Tja! :D

I just bought an external usb drive at mediamarkt Teac 500GB 7200rpm hitachi disc,1500 sek. hard to beat!
I have it connected to my Computer in the closet and share to the tvix with netshare. I also tried it plugged in to the tvix via usb and it works great allthough I opted for having it like a network drive because I dont have to send files with ftp to it. and the noice (not much but I am sensitive about it) I Would have it out next to the tvix if I could send files with ftp to the usb disc via tvix. Is this possible?
The more I use my tvix the more I love it. Works all the time. The only film im having trouble with is Attack of the clones 1080p.ts but no worries mate!! ;)

Markus, the player won't play copyright protected ISO files or ripped discs. So if you have ripped the disc yourself you have to use ripping software that removes the 'copyright' info.

All ISO files and copied DVDs I've tried works wonderful on my 4000P, even over 100 mbit network. USB drives DO show up when I FTP to the unit, but the FTP is very shaky and gets stuck alot if you try to transfer several files in one go.

I just love the netshare program - no need to really share windows folders like I used to with my HTPC. Hate the missing option of browsing files while playing music and the lack of 'building' playlists in the unit itself. Love that we now can stream shoutcast radio too, hate that we hate to make playlists for it to work.

Basically: for the amount of money I payed it's one hell of a machine! I'm happy!

Markus H

Yo!
Now that I use netshare I have no problems with playing DVD isos. I only use what u call "backup DVDs" ;) There is one function wich I havent found yet. I want to share several folders in netshare from any location in my network. I want to pick any folders I want and just ad them to the list in netshare and then let the program scan them and link to the right folder in the tvix (audio, Video or photo) My brothers Kiss dp600 does this and it is very nice.
Has enyone got Hamachi to work with tvix?
again it works with my brothers kiss so he can play a dvdiso from my computer over the net from his house

Will the program called ANYDVD do this? What if you backup a DVD using ANYDVD to the TVIX internal drive. Will it play then?

The reason I ask, is because im not sure if AnyDVD removes the protection and keeps it removed, or if the saved ISO file is still protected.

Yes, AnyDvd does remove the copy protection from any copies files. While AnyDvd is running either just copy all of the files from the DVD to a folder or use a ripper like DVD Decrypter or Clone DVD to create an ISO file. Either way the files on your computer will no longer have DRM associated with them. :D

However, i just found out that the box doesnt support files which are wmv8 encoded or less. Sorry for my ignorance but im quite new to this. Does this mean that i have to re-encoded all my wmv's that are 8 or less to a new format (either divx or xvid)?

As an aside-- if anyone is interested in setting up wireless for the device and has an inclination to getting in up to your elbows...

There's a discontinued programmable Motorola WR850G router available through 3btech.net for $27.99 with free shipping. It's possible to load this thing up with DD-WRT (a Linux-based enhanced firmware) and set it up as a wireless client bridge to an existing wireless network-- fundamentally the same thing as a wireless gaming adapter. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a gaming adapter and a lot more versatile. If you can do wired networking I would, but if you can't this is a good option for wireless.

Interesting. Has anyone tried using powerline ethernet adapters? I plan to move the TiVX between living & bedroom and my PC/router is in the study. My house has no reasonable way for running CAT5 so I've relied on wireless thus far for my MCE extender (has tons of issues-main reason I bought the TiVX).

To connect the TiVX to my network when in the living room powerline or wireless are my only two options. Any feedback/suggestions would be much welcomed!

I just set up a customer with Netgear Powerline adapters (xe102). It worked like a charm between floors. They were $60 each.
I didn't run a bandwidth test, but Homeplug is rated for 14Mbps. Which means they probably get far less than that. That's fine for the internet connection we were sharing, but it would not be enough for streaming video.

There is a newer Homeplug 2.0 or HD or AV or something, that is rated for 85mbps and 200mbps.

TxNate
01-10-07, 08:48 PM
Yeah, there was a press release that just came out from Linksys w/CES going on this week of the new HomePlug AV - states data rates up to 100Mbps. Can easily find it on their site (press release @ bottom of main page).

There are a few others available claiming rates of 54-200Mpbs, so I'll have to search the reviews & forums to see what seems to be the best.

May be worth a shot and possibly more reliable than wireless for now.

I've got 6 D-link powerline units here and it works fine for streaming. They are rated at 200Mbps but knowing how this industry works, I would be surprised if I get more than 50Mbps top, which is enough for streaming even HD anyway.

Reporting in from Las Vegas, were suffered temporary insanity by UPS, it seems that they forgot how they normally handle shipments and customs clearances so I spent much of my time yelling at them from the CES floor. This was the shipment from hell as the units have been ready waiting at the warehouse since Dec. 21. Needless to say, the freight finally arrived today and I believe all pending shipments went out today.

Just so you all know, we generally do not charge credit cards until the day of shipment, however since we were told that the shipment would arrive on Monday, we charged everyone on Friday to save time as there was no way we could clear all back orders on the same day without that extra step being done in advance. It is not our normal procedure, hope those of you who get their shipment before the weekend have fun with their new toys.

Well, I got mine yesterday and got it all hooked up and I am having some problems. I upgraded the firmware to the latest (2.0.5), the unit came with 1.9.0. and I am having problems playing .mpg (and .vob) files.

So far I have only tried streaming from my server. I need to copy a file to the local hard drive tonight and see if I get the same stuttering problem. The funny thing is, it streams Dvix file perfectly. It only stutters on mpg files (or derivatives, it stutters on DVD's .vob files also).

Does anybody know if the codecs are in the firmware, or a function of the processor? If I still get the stuttering off the local drive, I may try going back to the previous firmware.

Yes, EIDE ATA drives are correct for the M4000P. The P at the end is for parallel (IDE), while they are planning on a M4000S for serial (SATA) drives.

The Samsung Spinpoint drives are reputed to be very quiet and well suited to home theater usage. Newegg has pretty reasonable pricing on a range of Samsung drives.

Stuttering on mpegs....probably a function of network congestion. If reduced bitrate files work well and not higher bitrate files....probably time to consider putting a hard drive into the unit.

shannonrawls
01-12-07, 02:05 PM
Mmmmmmm, I dunno 'bout that.

See, that's the thing. a 100mbps baseT network, even at nominal/average speeds is plenty to handle "multiple" streams of HIGH DEFINITION, much less stutter on 4-6mbps SD video from a DVD. As far as I'm concerned, it should NEVER be considered "network congestion" when these units choke on a DVD. I think the reason is because the units that have internal harddrives, the manufacturer concetrates all their research & development on ensuring it plays correctly from an internal harddrive rather then a ethernet network feed.

This is the reason why I believe those who purchase a media streamer with an internal harddrive should use it as such. Why buy one with an internal harddrive if you don't plan to put one in it? If that's the case, then you should get a media streaming device that has no built-in hardrive capabilities and only "expects" to receive it's video via a network connection. That way you know the manufacturer concetrated on making sure the unit will handle ethernet-fed video.

dcushing

I don't think it is a network issue. I stopped all processes that used the network and had the monitor up while trying to play a file, I was only using 12% of the bandwidth while trying to stream the file.

I will put a file on the local hard drive after work and try that before I do anything else. That will eliminate the network issues.

I have no intention of putting a hard drive in the M4000. I ordered it because it sounds like is the most feature rich and has the best interface for the money.
The main reason I bought this is for playing ripped DVDs over the network (SMB) with full chapter support and a decent interface. If it can't do this well, I have no desire to keep it.
If you know of another unit that can play as many file types, specifically ripped DVDs, over SMB and has a good interface for $250, let me know and I will return my unit before I open it.

petboh - do you have any MPEG-2 Transport Stream (.ts) files?

I am very keen to find out how the TViX M-4000P handles these kinds of files in this way as it's very common to find movies and TV programs as multiple .ts files rather than one single large one.

use HDTV2MPG to join all your ts files into a single ts file. This will eliminate the pause when going to the next file since the entire movie will be on 1 file.

I just finished reading through the entire 4000 thread and i had a quick question relating to audio.

does anyone know if this unit plays any lossless audio files?
flac/ape/aac ? just curious.

and for video, does it support DIVX/XVID files?

This machine really seems like the networked content streaming device ive been looking for. I currently have an XBOX 360 in the living room which stream .TS files that are kept on a MCE 2005 box and it does the job well. Id like something similar for the bedroom, but without gaming capabilities and quieter than a 360.

Would the 4000 be able to stream the movies(all high-def TS rips) that i have on my MCE 2005 box just like the 360 does??

Also, with shipping and stuff, the price gets real close to $300 which is what an xbox 360 costs, so another question is, if any of you have both a 360 and 4000 which would you say is a better buy? i know the 4000 blows the 360 out of the water in features(such as dvd iso support, very cool feature), but if all i care about is my ts rips, is the 360 a better deal.

Also, i noticed many of you wanted to have the HDTV tuner capabilities that the 5000 has, which is required to watch OTA television. Microsoft recently announce IPTV supprot for the 360, which means we will all be able to watch and record our tv shows right through the MCE extender interface on the 360. Because IPTV tuners are software, the only limit to the number of simultaneous stream that we could watch and record is only limited by available bandwidth, you could theoretically have say 3 tuners, watch 1 channel, records 2 different channel. this is a limitation with hardware tuners, you need one hardware tuner per channel you want to watch. i dont know if the 5000 has support for multiple hardware tuners.

this is all just food for thought, i want to make sure i spend my ~$300 well.

My experience is with NFS, even the manual says SMB will cause stuttering of DVD and HD streams.

I am home now, so I will transfer a file to the hard drive and try that later.

Okay, the 1.5GB mpeg file (recorded from BeyondTV) plays fine when copied to the internal drive. I reverted to the previous firmware (1.9.5), which looks better, but still have the same problem, just a little less stuttering. I am going to copy a movie in both .IFO and .ISO to the hard drive and I'll see how that works.

Everything plays great from the hard drive, IFO ISO mpeg, avi all play very smoothly. I still can only stream avi over the network, anything else with a higher bitrate stutters very badly.

Hopefully this will be fixed.

dcushing
01-13-07, 01:53 PM
Depends on how yo make the iso. Th ones I was experimenting with are the entire DVD, so they had all the trailers and menus intact. I also have some that are just the movie.

There is an issue with networking though, some other threads here are discussing it too. I can only play iso's off the internal drive, otherwise they stutter so much they are unwatchable. Others are saying that they lock up their units. Someone has determined that the 4000U is only connecting at 10/half duplex, so hopefully this can be fixed in a upgraded firmware.

I don't need the HD capabilities, streaming and all that stuff. The 3100 model is just fine with me. However, the 3100 will not play .mp4 files. Is this a firmware issue or hardware? Should I make a decision to buy the m-4000p based on this? Or, should I stick with the 3100 because most likely they will have a firmware for .mp4 in the future?

Any ideas? I'd hate to fork over the extra cash when maybe down the line, they will have firmware for the 3100 that will support .mp4.

gnat,

No prob, I understand frustration. You should have heard what I said to the UPS rep.

Have you ever heard of "Absolutely, positively... FedEx":)

I know FedEx sometimes cost more, but I've had too much frustration with UPS. I used to use UPS to save a buck or two, but after enough heartache... mostly, just not being able to find out what, where, or when... I decided you get what you pay for.

I always try to find suppliers that at least offer FedEx as a choice. From reading all of your correspondence on this forum, hats off to you for such excellent customer support and caring. Hopefully, after your recent experience, you may consider using FedEx so that your hard work and efforts are topped off with a pleasant customer experience.

Just got my 4000 on Friday and have been playing with it. So far, I am very disappointed with a couple of things. Hopefully there are decent work arounds, but here they are: (fimrware 2.05a)

1. No ff when watching vobs
I have a lot of ripped dvds and when I watch the vob, it plays fine . I can fast forward, but when I find the point where I want to watch, it goes back to the first of the vob. VERY annoying.

2. (And this is a show-stopper): I have 2 PCs that contain 2 or more Hard drives each. I want to be able to access those drives from the TiVX. Problem is, you can't using Netshare and you can't using Samba. Netshare allows you to share one share per computer, and Samba allows you the same. Why can't you specify tivxhd2, 3 or 4? This is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. And I don't want to use Junction magic as a work around for numerous reasons. Anyone else have a decent workaround idea? If not, this unit may be making its way back to DC. I have been using different streamers for years that NEVER had a problem with such a rudimentary feature (Even the old Prismiq could handle this).

Hopefuly these are user errors and someone out there will have some tips. But for now, I am disappointed.

gnat

And I don't want to use Junction magic as a work around for numerous reasons.

Is Junction Magic for creating Symbolic Links in Windows? Because that would be my suggestion. Certainly later Windows versions have native support for symbolic links buried in there, so you shouldn't have to add layer upon layer of services. It'd just be a matter of finding a good utility you liked. The Sysinternals utility seems pretty basic-- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/Junction.mspx

Of course my 4000 is still in shipping, so I have no idea if it would work. I'd be curious to know though.

Another problem I am running into (outside the networking issues already discussed) on my new M4000 is that my digital photos taken in "portrait" are displayed in "landscape" on the unit and not automatically rotated. This is such a simple feature long available on many other media players (like my Roku1000). Does anyone know how this can be fixed or does it take a firmware upgrade?

I don't have my 4000 yet...but is it confirmed that there is a network speed access but in the 4000 that has not manifested in the 5000?

Also, I am curious why UPS did not offer to upgrade the shipping for all of digital connection's customers due to their snafu.

Those are both real good questions.

I'm still trying to decide between the 4000 and 5000. So, if the 10Mb/Half duplex problem is only in the 4000's, that may influence my decision. If so, this means they're using different components in the two devices. This brings up the issue of how long will they continue to release one firmware for both units. Because over time it's going to get bloated if they have to have code to support different hardware in each release.

Does anyone know if 1000Mb (Gigabit) will be in the newer models slated for later this year? I know true, working 100Mb is suitable for HD streaming, but the faster Gigabit would be nice for moving files to the unit (assuming the ftp problems are cleared up).

I have some dvd's ripped to ISO that are SD ( 4:3 ), how does it play back when the 4000 is connected to my WS ( 16:9 ) HDTV?

I currently am using my MAC that will play the ISO's, but there are the black bars on the left and right of the screen. On my home DVD player, it will strech it to full screen.

I don't think the 4000U has any built in stretch modes. When I play 4:3 material, it comes over 4:3. I am connected to my plasma via component cables, and my plasma doesn't stretch that input so I watch it with the black bars.

The ftp support is terrible
don't try and ftp a folder it hangs the system and requires a reboot
you need to create the subfolder first then ftp the files 1 (one) at a time or it will hang the system and require a reboot. (not good)

I was using securefx to transfer and had to load the files one at a time. If I selected them all it would transfer the first and hang on the 2nd file requiring a reboot.

I have not been able to get the network sharing to work on my system, but I'm sure that's something I am doing wrong.

My new 4000 is hooked up to my Sony Pearl projector via the HDMI connection.

There is a vertical black band on the left side of the picture - about 5% of the screen width. The right side of the image is ok. Selecting different resolution (720P, 1080i, 1080p) does not make a difference.

I tried using image shift on the TVIX - but it won't move the picture to the left. What it will do is move the content that is in the window the TVIX is defining to the left or to the right - so I can make the black bar wider if I use the TVIX image shift to the right, or I can make a black bar show up on the right if I shift to the left, but I can't get it to fill the black bar on the left.

Has anyone seen this before and any workarounds other than using the image shift on the projector? This is a bit of a pain because I have all my connections routing through an HDMI switch, so there isn't an easy way for the projector to auto-detect the TVIX. None of the other devices I have connected through the same HDMI switch have this behaviour - Toshiba HD DVD and HD Tivo both are fine.

Any ideas?

It looks like just about everyones 4000 is autonegotiating to 10/half, which is what is causing the stuttering on high bitrate streams.

can everyone who is able to tell what speed their 4000 is synced at post their results? this is fairly easy for those of you with managed switches, but the rest of us could maybe look at the color your switch is lighting up. green is usually 100/full, with 10 or slower being amber.

im just trying to decide whether to buy the 4000 now or hold off till all the network issues are worked out through either firmware updates or maybe even updated hardware revisions.

I have one of the M-4000 units that have the Ethernet port problem and after talking with Digital Connections over the last couple of days have no course of action left other than to RMA the unit and hopefully refund my money. They told me yesterday that they were going to hold one of the remaining units for me until I heard back from Dvico. I just called back to Digital Connections to inquire about swapping my unit and was told they had no units left! So much for the three units that they were saving for RMA purposes when I called yesterday. Guess there are more than three with the bad Ethernet port problems.

Has anyone heard from Dvico about a solution other than returning the unit? I hate loosing the money on shipping if this can be resolved in the field.

Rod,

While I understand your frustration, unfortunately, we can only do so much until we can at least figure out where the problem lies. Since this item has barely been in country for less than 1 week with multiple reports, we can't give you a better answer than that we are looking into it.

As for DVICO, I suspect they have not had the report long enough to investigate and provide an answer.

There were more RMAs than we thought, and since we can't give you a replacement, we'll be happy to refund you in full including the shipping. Please PM me with your order information and that will be passed to technical support. I'm sorry to say that is the only temporary solution we can offer, especially since no new units are now expected until the end of February and we are completely sold out.

I have not had a chance to experiment with the network connection yet. I should have a good test bed, as I can run a long ethernet cable from the router directly into the unit (not the final solution, but since it is in the adjoining room this will be the test implementation).

My UPS delivery date was the 15th, so I was excited to be able to mess with my M4000 on the holiday on my day off. Unfortunately, UPS came at 6:45pm, so between taking care of my 8 month old, prepping for a work week, and watching the 3rd & 4th hours of the 24 Season Premier, I didn't get much of a chance to play with the new toy.

I did notice that my unit came with Firmware 1.9.8A. Is there a way to backup the firmware so if I don't like 2.0.5 I don't have to drop to 1.9.5? The note on the tvix.kr firmware page about the Menu key not working when using ISO or IFO's troubles me since the primary purpose is to build a DVD Library.

Oh yeah, and the FTP support is horrible. I typically FTP from the command line, so everything is "one at a time", and I still managed to semi-crashed the FTP service after a few transfers. Semi-crash = I could change directories, but I could not "ls" or "dir" until a reboot of the TVix.

Will post additional experiences for those considering purchasing one of these. This forum was key to my purchase.

I just got done watching a ripped DVD "Crank". I ripped with no compression. All I can say is wow. This machine is awesome!!! It ROCKS. I haven't messed with any IP settings I just loaded up a HDD and messed with basic settings to get pic and sound and played the movie. Perfect. My Sony 1251 CRT PJ has to be reconverged every time I turn it on, red drifts a little, I've tried to fix it but it only takes a second, not the full convergence just move the red over and up a little, BTW that's why I'm going to a digital PJ later this week. ANYWAY, I notice when I'm converging with my Integra 5.4 DVD Player that the convergence lines bloom a little like it should, at least should s little, anyway with the TVIX hooked up and in 720p mode the convergence lines looked a lot sharper, I thought the overall quality of the DVD play back was awesome, when I player the original DVD in the Intergra right after it had a really good pic as well it's hard to tell but they were probably pretty close. My next test is tomorrow when I can pick up some more component cables I'll hook it through my receiver and play the original DVD and the Tvix at switch back and forth to see what I think is better, not that I care but my ultimate goal is to have quality. I'll keep people posted after I hook it up with my network.

/tvixhd1 192.168.12.0/255.255.255.0(ro,no_root_squash)

which mounts perfectly fine (in less than 1 second) on my roku hd1000 using

mount 192.168.12.200:/tvixhd1 /mnt/smb/nfs/tvixhd1

but when i enter:
tvixhd1 and 192.168.12.200

into the tvix's network share setup (NFS), the tvix does not connect.

I setup a share called "tv" from my windows machine (NFS) and it connects to that perfectly (very fast and no problems at all).

I've looked at the messages file from the linux box and can see the tvix trying to mount the share
Jan 16 23:10:28 localhost rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from 192.168.1
2.210:798 for /tvixhd1 (/tvixhd1)

(the tvix is as 192.168.12.210) - which looks fine, but it doesn't mount (I get the same log entry from the roku but that mounts fine).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hope this helps someone.

Got the M4000P last night and set it up. Purchased a drive for it, since the old setup I am replacing was a huge loud PC with ATI All-In-Wonder. In all I am pretty happy.

I've been following all of the angst in this thread about problems with the device with some interest. These are my observations:

- It's a nifty looking all-plastic unit, and the remote is well laid out. I'm not really accustomed to the control toggle on the front panel of the system unit, except to turn it on-- it's a little fussy as far as I can tell. The data that appears on the LED display on the unit is somewhat useful-- it will scroll the file name if you change files, tell you the elapsed time if you are playing something, tell you the resolution if you toggle the resolution settings, and allow you to do some very basic menu navigation if the display isn't showing (but only if you know the menu layout).

- With everyone's hopping back and forth between firmware revisions, I left the manufacturer's firmware on there. It's the alpha one-- 1.98a?

- I've had a little trouble with the codec support and the hodgepodge of different video files I have around. So far I've found that it won't play Divx with Global Motion Compensation (GMC) enabled, MPG42, and a few other file types I have kicking around. Most play fine, but it isn't like a PC where you can download any missing codecs. I also have a couple of files where there is a black bar or a horizontally smeared bar to one side. Given the number of compression options you can use with most of these codecs, it doesn't surprise me that there are some glitches. In general it looks and performs well

- Did some tests with command-line ftp. I had no problems with putting multiple files to the device, but I am wondering if the problems the_idol was having were from copying multiple threads to the device simultaneously. Anyway, FTP seems to be working fine for me, but I don't doubt there are problems with file deletion errors because there are FAQs explaining that you should do periodic chkdsks when it is connected over USB.

- The unit is pretty quiet, but if you really listen the fan isn't silent. There's a faint rattle which worries me because one of these tiny fans on my PC logic board got worse and worse after getting a rattle like this. Of course it is a lot quieter in general than my old PC.

- On the 10/100 duplexing front, all of the lights on my switch are amber, so I have a lot of work to do before I am doing 100 full duplex to anything on my network. I never worried much about it because the bottleneck before was my ISP connection-- I wasn't doing much between the PCs on my network. I fiddled around with streaming to the device with a low bandwidth file, and it was lovely.

- After moving it from a wired network to a wireless network using a dd-wrt enabled router set up for client bridging, I am not getting to or from the device. It's hard not having a command line on the device you are trying to troubleshoot. I didn't have enough time to sort it out last night.

Mine just came in yesterday. So when I got home I played with it quite a bit.
It's a great looking unit with great packaging like everyone said. I like the fact that you can turn the fan speed down. I set mine to the lowest speed as I have an open TV stand, and I will not be putting a HDD in it. You can still hear it, but barely.

Now, am I missing a walkthrough or guide somewhere for the TVIX units? It took me about an hour to figure out that the SMB file share HAD to be called "tvixhd1". The included booklet must have been translated in to English as it is very hard to understand in some places.

I bought this unit to play my DVDs off the network. I don't mind re-ripping them, but so far I am not having very good luck. All the DVDs I have ripped in IFO/VOB format are a pain to play. You have to navigate to the different IFO files and hit play on them. It doesn't just load the folder up as a "DVD" like I thought it would, like MCE/MyMovies does.

So I decided to re-rip a movie as an ISO in DVD Shrink. The ISO mounts and plays fine on my PC. But on the TVIX won't play it. It shows the file name on the front screen, but the TV is blank.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem using SMB. Then I switched to NFS Netshare and it worked perfect.
I have some ideas on why its like this but to much of a novice regarding network to mention anything here

my advice: try using netshare and it will probably work!!

There is an FAQ on the tvix.co.kr site about accessing it via FTP from different FTP clients. Basically, you ftp the device's address, use the username tvixftp, and use the password that is displayed when you press the info button on the remote control-- the password seems to be randomized and unmodifiable.

I found my networking problem, ME and I used to be a network guy...DAM do I feel stoopid. I ran the Cat 5 over the weekend under the house and found I don't have any more ports on my router so I didn't plug the phuckin' thing in...LOL Anyway after installing netshare I was able to play movies from my massive network. I've got a ton of work today so I only watched 1 minute of a dvd iso from my network and everything seems fine. I am now transfering by ftp dvd isos to the tvix hdd and it says my upload speed is 3600 KB/s seems pretty fast. If anyone has any questions I think i've got this little device figure out for the most part. ANyone know if there is an easy way to convert wmv8 to wmv9 so I can watch DL stuff on my projector?

I was getting about 3000 KB/s over wired ftp-- what is that, like 24 Mb/s? I'm not too sure about my conversion there.

For file conversions, I've only used SUPER for a couple of specialized conversions (converting Youtube Flash content to AVI files). But I suspect it would perform a conversion to WMV9 if you had the codecs installed:

I seen to have a slightly different problem. I am using a cheap switch so just lights for me. The 100 light is lit. I can connect to my windows share (I did not know it had to be named tvixhd1 until someone posted that info) via smb I am able to play my video_ts files no problem (they are all standard def) I made a junction link to another directory on my machine that has 300 folders (all pictures). If I am using smb everything works . I then shared the same folder tvixhd1 with netshare and switched the tvix to NFS it shows me my top layer of folders but if I select the photo folder (with 300 below it) it chokes reboot required. I then tried to play my ifo files (that played fine under smb) which were down 1 directory and it listed the files in there fine but shows black for 30 sec and then returns to the folder view and does not play anything.

Anyone have any Ideas.

I'm a hurtin' dude because ftp does not work that well for me.

Following are my observations about the M4000P unit, I have installed a HDD in it

Overall it is a solid player, but some quirks still exits, for example reverse and forward is not as smooth as I had expected even from local installed drive.

I am having issues in connecting to my PC ( winxp sp2). I named one folder on this pc as tvixhd1 and shared it, firewall is also turned off . I can ping tvix player from the pc but when I try to connect my pc from M4000 it gets "cannot connect to disk error" The firmaware version is 1.9.8a.

My pc IP address is 192.168.1.101 which I have to enter as 192.168.001.101 in M4000 since you cannot delete prefix 0's. Can this be an issue. Tvix also asks for server name which I enter as \\machinename.

NFS netshare also does not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Terrible documentation, but make sure you name your server on the tvix4000 tivxhd1. It is NOT the name of your computer, but rather the name of the folder. And you cannot use any other name than tvixhd1.

Has anyone tried using the 4000 without Internet access? I am setting it up on a LAN without Internet access, and therefore no DNS servers. My 4000 freezes on boot up if I have a network cable attached. If I unplug the network cable and boot, it boots fine.

I have a feeling it is due to a blank DNS server on network setup.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't think that it was DNS, because there are no hostnames to translate to IP addresses. In the setup instructions they say to use IP addresses... I don't believe there is a hostname anywhere in my configuration, and I assume you would have been even less likely to use one.

CrashX
01-18-07, 02:50 PM
Correct. Unless you are running your own DNS server, it doesn't do any good for local network names resolution. Internet DNS does not have a way to resolve names to IPs for local network machines.
You would need either WINS or a local Dynamic DNS server, and the device would have to support it.

That's why you just specify the IP to connect to, it doesn't need to resolve anything.

...

I tested out about 5 avi & mpg vids last night (played ~60 secs each) from an external USB HDD and had no issues. Watched World Trade Center and was able to RW/FF @ 2x, 4x, 8x & 16x VERY smoothly. A huge plus after suffering with a Linksys MCE for a year that couldn't do squat but skip & that didn't work worth $@#% (dumped that off on eBay for 1/2 the price of the TViX, by the way). Video & audio quality were pretty impressive overall.

There was a single point about 36 mins into WTC where I saw a flash of what could be "greenies", but they disappeared almost immediately & didn't see them again. Was the first time I watched it all the way through, so not sure if it's the individual file or the M4k.

My house is not designed for running cable in the least, but I intend to run CAT5 to one room and hoping to get a wireless bridge set up for the living room. So, I've not yet been able to test any streaming - would much prefer that over porting the external HDD back & forth.

I've noticed quite a few stating the documentation is horrible and no where does it state to name your PC share. I haven't compared the user guide included with the M4k unit to the one on the web site, but the PDF I downloaded does state on pg 14 to name the share 'tvixhd1' (note: this is under the SAMBA instructions). The NetShare manual does not tell you this specifically, though the screenshot on pg 2 shows a share folder of 'c:\tvixhd1'. Regardless, the documentation could certainly be improved.

I had the same problem and finally did it this way. I can not mount single folders but the hole discs work fine.
I think you can fix this problem if you know anything about linux (and I dont :D )

1. You can mount your hard drives in empty folders.

Example: Create the folder that you want to share for Tvix (tvixhd1)

2. In that folder you create a couple of empty folders (Hd1, Hd2, Hd3 etc.)

3. Open Control Panel/Administrative tools/computer management

4. Open Disc Management, and select one of the discs that you want to

mount. (don’t worry, a disc can be mounted on several places at the

same time)

5. Right click on the drive and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths”

6. Choose “add”, and browse to find your empty folder.

7. Repeat for all your drives.

1) Is the 10mb 1/2 duplex a physical fault or it it fixable in the firmware, and has the

2) When it plays vobs [ over a nas for me, no internal drive when i buy one ],

have to navigate to the vob directory to play the movies ?

3) When is a fix coming for the samba mount problem with speed as my nas hasnt

Not clear from your description what connections everything has. I have the M4000 connected to a 802.11g wireless router set up as a client bridge, and my PC is connecting to it through a 802.11g wireless network. The client bridge says that I have 35-40% signal quality. FTPing to the unit said I was getting a throughput of about 1750 KB/s over that wireless connection, and I was getting 3000 KB/s over a wired network. I haven't made any effort at tuning or optimizing, and my unmanaged switch indicates that nothing is running at 100 Mb/s.

If somebody out there is a monster linux freak, they could recompile the uClinux binaries for the M4000 with telnet and other support-- then you could do some real diagnostics on this whole ethernet kerfuffel. The source for the device is here:

http://www.tvix.co.kr/gpl

The problem could be the driver for the ethernet interface, or it could be the hardware. Intuitively it seems a little more likely that it is the former, since Dvico is probably buying commodity hardware for the ethernet interface. Like recent Sony battery and Nishikon capicitor problems, a flaw in a commodity part hits the whole industry with a roar, not just one vendor.

I was a little indirect there, so I think you missed my point. I suspect that it is going to be a firmware correctable problem resulting from modifying the driver the firmware uses.

If it were a hardware problem, DVICO's not building these interfaces themselves, and they aren't the only ones who would have bought them. As a result, there's a good chance that there would be a lot more noise about ethernet problems on devices from a lot more vendors-- and I haven't heard about this. So I am going to guess that it's not hardware.

Unless of course DVICO didn't assemble the components correctly...

Well, having lurked around these forums for a while all I can say is that all of the devices have more similarities than differences. I am not positive, but it seems like most of them are based on Sigma Designs processors (many of the DVD drive/streaming players as well) and some form of uCLinux. As a result most of them are drawing on the same open-source underpinnings for the functionality on their devices.

I thought this device would have many of the software bugs worked out because the M4000 firmware is the same as the M5000. From what I have read on the MVix 760HD player, the Tvix devices are further ahead. But all you have to do is look at all the options in the Divx and Xvid codec configuration dialog to figure out that trying to be compatible across the board is a losing battle. As a result, I am certainly finding plenty that doesn't work quite right. But I had pretty low expectations going in, so I am amazed it works as well as it does.

The one thing I find really attractive about the Mvix 760HD is that there is a lunatic named Antivirus who has downloaded the source code and is building new firmware versions on a daily basis-- changing the interface, fixing bugs, adding functionality, etc. The speed at which he is working is a little alarming, but I think it's cool that they have that kind of developer community. Antivirus also seems to be working with a couple of other players as well, but not the Tvix stuff.

One thing I am wondering about with my M4000. On the right side of some AVI movies, I am getting a horizontally smeared bar about four inches wide at the very edge of the video. If I cycle through the resolutions using the TV out button, when I get back to 1080i the bar is gone.

On the video files I'm not even sure what codec I am using, so I'm just fishing here to see if this is something anyone else is seeing, or maybe it's just something funny between the TVIX and my particular display.

Thanks...

1) Is the 10mb 1/2 duplex a physical fault or it it fixable in the firmware, and has the 5000 model have the same problem.

Ans) It looks like the 10mb 1/2 duplex issue is a harware issue with some of the units. I just received my 4000 and tested it against my router with a built in switch and an old managed switch. In both cases the 4000 connected at 100mb full duplex. I think that some of the units just had bad boards in them. In one of the other threads people were being told to return the units that had this issue.

2) When it plays vobs [ over a nas for me, no internal drive when i buy one ],
can you navigate to the Film name directory and it will play from there, or do you have to navigate to the vob directory to play the movies ?

Ans) You have to go to the file level. Since the the 4000 supports iso files, I may re-rip some of my movies into iso files so that there is only 1 file to select.

3) When is a fix coming for the samba mount problem with speed as my nas hasnt
and will never have nfs support.

Ans) Unknown. I didn't see anything on their website about a time frame or if they are working on it. When setting up the unit the player recomends using nfs for optimum playback.

4) does it play all Divx and Divx HD content
I have tried a bunch of Divx and XVID files and find that it plays most. I have found several files the it either displays a message saying the format is not supported or the files just fails to play which usually requires the player to be restarted to recover from. So far I have been able to fix the problem files although this is time consuming.

Been thinking of getting one of these to store my (relativly small) collection of dvds on. Plan to rip them as iso.

For those that are running them with a harddrive in, whats the noise level like? Had been thinking about getting one with a 750 gig harddrive, then expanding that with an external usb harddrive if/when I start to run out of room. The alternative is to get one without a hardrive in it and connect it to an external nas in another room where the computer is to keep the noise level down.

I picked up a Samsung Spinpoint, and it is very quiet. There is a tiny tiny rattling of the M4000 fan, and that is louder than the drive typically is. The Spinpoints are recommended by endpcnoise.com for quiet systems, so they are a good choice for home theater.

I got the spinpoint on recommendation from Gnat. I have to be about 6 inches away from it to hear anything and then it's more like a hum. As for the rest of the stuff, I got mine setup tonight without too much trouble. I don't have a DVI cable or any Hi-Def stuff to play on it right now, but I streamed an AVI and it worked fine. The FTP is a little funky, I can get to it work with a command prompt but not with smartftp. Although that program is a bit buggy, anybody got any other suggestions? I haven't really thought about testing the throughput yet, but I had no problems with the AVIs I streamed.

Also, can you rip HD-DVDs? I just received my XBOX HD-DVD player with King Kong in HD and thinking I would rip some of it and see if I could stream it, or put it on my HDD in the unit and see how it looked. I was just wondering how people get the HD content on their HDD. I have xilisoft DVD ripper, wondering if anyone knows if that would work or do I need a special program for HD DVDs.

Thanks

This is interesting I am still undecided by the tvix or the mvix, any links to this please? (the firware hacks)

If you do an advanced search you can look up postings by Antivirus. English is clearly not his first language, so his postings get kind of confusing. The posting with his firmware link is here in the main 760HD thread:

Thank you. I shall have a read, very interesting indeed.

Stupid Belkin switch documentation. When I was first trying to figure out what speed my TVIX was operating at, I saw in the switch documentation that orange lights meant 10 Mb/s. All the ports were lit up in orange, so I assumed that everything was operating a slower speed for some mysterious reason. Then I looked elsewhere in the Belkin documentation, and it said orange meant 100 Mb/s and green meant 10 Mb/s. So to verify I manually changed from Auto to 10 Mb/s half on my PC, and the switch light turned green.

So, I am pleased to say that, like some others have reported, my TVIX M4000 seems to be lit in orange and doing 100 Mb/s-- my previous FTP tests seemed to be going faster than 10 Mb/s, but it is nice to confirm. My switch's diagnostic lights don't seem to distinguish between full and half duplex, so I can't say with authority what is going on with that.

So far I'm liking my player a lot.

I tried to consolidate my TiVo, DVD Player, and my DVD Library into one HTPC, but after using both MCE and Beyond TV/Beyond Media I found them lacking, noisy, and at times, spouse-unfriendly. Nothing beats a TiVo for recording and watching TV. The DVD player beats out the HTPC for boot time and noise, and so that just left the DVD library, which is where both HTPC's were great (with DVD Library plugins).

The TViX M-4000 was intended to replace the DVD Library portion of my HTPC, and it does a pretty good job so far. It's so nice not to have to juggle the physical discs around.
The only issues I have so far are:
1) There's no automatic cover art, plot/synopsis, etc. But since each folder can have a custom wallpaper and folder icon, with a little work, I can display the movie information right up on the screen. More posts on this later when I can add attachments.

2) To add a new DVD to the TViX, I have to disconnect it and take it (or the external USB) to the office where the real computer is so that I copy the files over. It's a bit of a pain since the TViX is in a cabinet and connected via Component, so there's a bunch of wires to disconnect first. I suppose I could FTP the files, but 5gb over a 802.11g connection takes a loooong time.

Has anyone tried connecting a USB DVD player to the TViX? The Firmware page says that now it works better with ODD (assuming they mean Optical Disc Drive, although it doesn't mention that anywhere else).

Thank you, I think it was me not reading it properly and jumping to conclusions instead.

I want one, but still undecided about some of the features, I will keep waiting for answers for the other questions I had or if someone has links to answers for my questions be very much appreciated, or continue to read the forum and see if it has the answers buried there somewhere.

Thank you again.
Just as you, I'm still trying to make the decision - TViX 4000, TViX 5000, or something besides TViX. If I've understood the postings correctly, we can't even get the 4000 until end of Feb (which most likely means mid March or later:)) This is based on a post by Kei at Digital Connection. I think that is the only distributor in USA besides tivxusa.com which never seamed to have any and website has been down for a couple of days now. I haven't seen anything about the eta for the next shipment of 5000's?

I'm really curious if the decisions will be more clear come mid March or even more complicated. Most everyone seems to be very happy with the TViX, but the latest MViX seems to be catching up. No telling what 6 to 8 weeks means in the development of these products. I also wonder if that gets close to upgrade times of the underlying components (Sigma chipset, etc...). I'm sorta upset I didn't get one when I had the chance, but hopefully I've grown up enough to be patient.... or maybe not:)

You are in almost exactly same situation as me. I originally tried an HTPC as a one stop shop for all my needs. But it wasn't nearly as easy as it could/should have been. I got tired of reboots, wife complaints and the extra noise. I could have thrown a LOT more money into it to make it quieter, but it just wasn't worth it. I sold it off in parts and used the money to buy an Oppo, and a TVIX. I never used it as a DVR as I've always had Tivos and DirecTV and had no real reason to use it as one.

I have ethernet runs to the back of my entertainment center, so I just stream all DVDs from my 1.5TB Linux server.

While it appears the TViX can use a USB DVD player, it won't play encrypted/copy proted DVDs. So really, it won't play just about any studio DVDs.

If only TViX and Oppo would work together and make one combined unit :)

One last question before i part with my £175 Uk glorious pounds. I have just purchased the Devolo 200mbs Powerline ethernet adapter, I have have some test vobs and test isos ready to go of the same movies, before I see which way I go. But Will they stream nicely over Samba, nfs wont be an option, what are peoples experience of Samba share over a wired network please.

Also How does this product deal with iTunes organized files, will it create its own playlists [stored on the nas also]

OK, I have another question before I make my decision too:)

Besides the future HDTV tuner option, it seems that the main functional difference between the TViX 4000 & 5000 is the remote. From pictures, they look quite different. The 4000 remote looks like it has an extra section of buttons at the top that aren't on the 5000 remote. Can someone that has both please provide some insight into the differences.

What are the extra buttons on the 4000? Are there certain tasks that the 4000 has a button for, but the 5000 has to navigate through menus? Does either have lighted buttons? Which do you prefer?

I appreciate any feedback because this may end up being my deciding factor. Thanks.

Can't speak for the 5000 as you request, but I can say that the PDF on the tvix.co.kr web page is pretty descriptive in laying out the 4000 remote-- perhaps the same is true for the 5000. The 4000 remote doesn't have lit buttons, but they seem to be glow in the dark. It's reasonably well laid out and I like the feel well enough. 90% of the navigation takes place with the arrow buttons, the play/select button, and the stop/back button. You are working your way through folders and files just like on an operating system. In the setup menu, after clicking on the Setup button you are working up and down, right and left, through options. There's no magical efficiency, but it doesn't strike me as that cumbersome.

There are several buttons on the remote relating to changing channels and recording-- I assume these buttons are for the 4030 model that incorporates a ATSC tuner. On the 4000, the only purpose the numeric keypad serves is for entering numbers and text in the setup menu. I'm not sure about the buttons you are seeing on top-- there are a set of four buttons along the top that will take you directly to a folder in the root of the hard disk if you name them according to their convention.

There are a bunch of special function buttons along the bottom-- sleep, info, TV out, repeat. I would be inclined to use about half of them occasionally. I'll probably end up programming a subset of the commands into my universal remote and stop using this one.

Thanks gnat. I've been in computer support for 15+ years and must have said RTFM a few thousand times myself.... duh... sorry about that!

What I had seen was that the 4000 has the number keys above the arrow key section of the remote. I thought that was actually additional set of keys that weren't on the 5000. I see now, they basically have the same buttons, just different layout.

So, if anyone has both, does one seem to feel or respond better than the other?

I have a question about NFS. According to TViX and most all users, NFS is recommended because there are performance issues on streaming HD content over Samba shares. TViX provides the win32 NetShare program which I assume is their free NFS server implementation. Do other NFS servers work just as well... i.e. NAS appliance or NFS share from some unix server?

Ahh well, Ive just bitting the bullet and orderd it yesterday [sunday] and getting it tomorrow [tuesday], I will give it a shot on samba and see how it copes with Vobs and Iso's over my devolo powerline when they come if it doesnt work, either I will be trying to hack my nas for nfs [ or selling it ] or selling the Tvix on ebay.

Thank you all for your info, I will be back to post some info when I've had time to play with it.

There are several people in the M5000 and M4000 that describe hooking up to Linux NFS servers from the TVIX. It sounds like there were some minor authentication issues, but they all seemed to get it working with some fiddling.

One wildcard I found with Netshare is that I have been having difficulty getting it to work over a "client bridged" wireless network. I haven't got wiring to my TV room, so I set up a wireless router as a client bridge to my main wireless network-- it extends the subnet for my main LAN to devices on the wireless router's ports. Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the TVIX mounting the NFS share over this connection which doesn't occur when it is connected on the wired network. SMB works fine to the PC, and ftp works fine to the TVIX. The wireless client bridge isn't a true bridge, and does some funny business with ARP routing that may be source of the problems. I had the same problem when I tried to set up the router as a wireless client, which sets up a new subnet for it's switch ports rather than extending your existing subnet.

I'd be curious to hear whether anyone had successfully used a wireless gaming adapter or similar device to successfully connect to an NFS share. I suspect that they would have similar issues to my setup.
