View Full Version : XBox 360 HD DVD Drive owners - head count
g55555sim 11-09-06, 08:21 PM Just want to check how many people have purchased and now own the XBox 360 HD DVD drive. Option 2-4 are for those who bought more than one Add On Drives ad gave some of them to relatives/friends/other family members.
I have also made this poll a multiple choice poll to see if the owner/purchasers are owners of standalone players. This matters when we try to do the movie attach rate thingy.
Option No. 5 is for those who own/purchased both the HD DVD add on standalone player/s.
And please let us know how many HD DVD movies you have purchased/rented. after owing the the HD DVD Add On.
Options.
YES - I own/purchased 1 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive
YES - I bought 2 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drives
YES - I bought 3 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drives
YES - I bought more than 3 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drives
YES - I own both the XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive/s and standalone player/s
g55555sim 11-09-06, 08:38 PM so i assume those who picked option no. 5 bought/own only 1 xbox 360 add on.
please pick option 1-4 and pick 5 too if you own the stand alone player. thankies
If you are not an owner yet but have preodered or intend to get one/more, please feel free to come back :)
LAGOSIAN 11-09-06, 09:20 PM I bought 5of them. I also own a standalone and a sammy Blu-ray.
vwbeetlvr 11-10-06, 12:37 AM i voted 5 but didnt know i needed to check 1 as well. I believe the poll will be skewed because of this. i cant fix it.
I think that once we can get these things working with a pc you the multi number will change.
g55555sim 11-10-06, 12:48 AM ^ actually option 4 is created especially for you . saw your post in the other thread :p
David Scott 11-10-06, 01:06 AM I think that once we can get these things working with a pc you the multi number will change.
It will plug into a PC running Vista.
g55555sim 11-10-06, 01:49 PM as of the time of this post = 125 units reached owners' hand :)
bobgpsr 11-10-06, 02:01 PM as of the time of this post = 125 units reached owners' hand :)
The first question said "owned/purchased" so I thought it would be ok to answer if the unit was shipped and we had a tracking number.

if you are confident you will be receiving it .. why not ;)
zalahmar 11-10-06, 02:46 PM i actually screwed up on this poll. I have both the HD-A1 and I'm waiting on my HD DVD Add-on for my 360 once Robert ships it.
DrCrawn 11-10-06, 02:50 PM i actually screwed up on this poll. I have both the HD-A1 and I'm waiting on my HD DVD Add-on for my 360 once Robert ships it.
I did the same thing...
My add on drive shipped from VE shipped today, btw. :D
Got mine earlier this afternoon and have been giving it a run. Oustanding so far with Batman Begins and MI:III
Here in Toronto the Best Buy I checked didn't have them in yet. They said that today was the launch day, but they were on route and would go on sale tomorrow.
They said there had been LOTS of inquiries about them and expected a line up and that they would be going fast. They said there were only getting in 33 of them which is interestingly similar to the number of PS3's.
Seems like there may be a similar number available of each which means they managed to get around 350k of the HD-DVD add-ons available.
In any case I will be buying one, but haven't voted yet like a good boy.
Cheers,
Richard
aaronwt 11-10-06, 04:39 PM I bought two Add ons and also have a stand alone HD DVD player.I saw the final option too late after I checked that I bought two add ons.
I've purchased around 73 HD DVDs, and have around 50 on preo-order. I usually rent any other titles available.
nataraj 11-10-06, 09:21 PM Voted for "own" add on and hd-a1 - though I've not got it yet from VE. But I did get the shipping email ...
Tim Hess 11-10-06, 10:03 PM YES - I own/purchased 1 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive 142 81.14%
Depending how how things pan out I may pick up a second on for the bedroom.
tattootearz 11-10-06, 10:21 PM Im a proud owner... I just dont know if I want to see King Kong again....
dad1153 11-10-06, 10:53 PM Bought the HD-DVD add on as well as four HD-DVD movies ('Batman Begins,' 'Good Night and Good Luck,' 'Slither' and 'Robin Hood')... but I still haven't bought an HDTV set! When I do (been shopping for one since March! :() I'm already set! :D
CaptDS9E 11-10-06, 11:16 PM and they said no one buys add on drives
species_8472 11-11-06, 01:11 AM I own both.... :). Working on comparison review for my site.. Stay Tuned..
Later..
Probably would have been good to include an option for Standalone only.
Not that I'm worried, I bought both :)
I bought it, and already have 3 Netflix HD-DVD's here in the house. I also bought "Ray" and "Mission Impossible 3" to go along with King Kong that came packaged with the system.
g55555sim 11-11-06, 01:36 PM as of the time of date of this post, 243 units sold (assuming Plex bought 4 units). Five voters picked two options
CaptDS9E 11-11-06, 01:39 PM Picked up the HDDVD drive for my 360 in my room. Have a stand alone XA1 in my HT
g55555sim 11-11-06, 05:24 PM I am dismayed by forum member: BassTek who voted for all five options. Please take note and take into this into consideration when quoting the figures on the poll.
It will plug into a PC running Vista.
Yeah but you still need software to play it.
Patrick. 11-11-06, 11:48 PM If it works with vista does that mean there's a possibility it can read any future HD-DVD ROMS? Or is it limited to movies?
BuGsArEtAsTy 11-11-06, 11:59 PM The numbers are pretty good here.
I have been guessing that Microsoft might ship something between 0.5 and 1 million HD DVD add-on drive units by the end of 2006. When does MS usually publish its official numbers?
If it works with vista does that mean there's a possibility it can read any future HD-DVD ROMS? Or is it limited to movies?
Data ROMs will be much easier than movies. ie. Any machine with UDF 2.5 support should be able to read a non-protected data HD DVD ROM.
bitemymac 11-12-06, 01:24 AM I'm very surprised at the percentage of people using xbox add on as their first HD-DVD player. It would be interesting what would happen when third party HD-DVD rom drives are available for the HTPC for around $50 in next 6 months... along with BD-DVD rom drives....
ShinHed 11-12-06, 01:57 AM I own the drive, without a 360.
PC -4- life
Blippy2005 11-12-06, 04:37 PM Woohoo successfully found one at Circuit City and used the $40 off $199+ coupon, thanks for the coupon tip AVS'ers.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=749155&highlight=360+circuit+city+coupon
now to test with 360 and then PC. :)
zappa2001 11-12-06, 06:29 PM Bought one and love it.
I'm still the only person buying any HD movies at my local BB. Every time I check out people ask me how great HD movies are, and people give me looks when I'm looking over the movies. It's great to over hear things like "Oh that's HD... oh DVD is just as good", when around that area.

$50?! Dream on - neither BD or HD DVD will be at that level in next year.
But rest assured that HD DVD will always be a year ahead of BR on price...
g55555sim 11-13-06, 04:19 PM ^ ... i dont see any BD drive yet .. they only have BD burner priced more than the PS3. No?

You don't need a Xbox 360 to enjoy the Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon. Mua ha ha ha!
$160 + Tax if you use the Circuit City coupon :D

I got one as soon as I could from FS in Canada. Sony A10 loves it!
I bought one today but i'm not very impressed....it might go back

I looked at that, and decided that when you add in the free KK and the remote, and realize that you are going to need software on the HTPC I think the pricing will be about a wash. There of course is the chance that it will be a while before the HD DVD for the Xbox 360 is able to work on a PC. I like the online HD capability for the Xbox 360 and I am hoping that Microsoft will see the success of the add on to offer the ability to run it on the PC and more important be able to use MC to move HD DVD and HD downloaded material between a HTPC and the X box 360.

Read a few posts back and take a look at the screencaps.
:)
I'm guessing the roughly 350 voters here so far represent at least 35,000 buyers out in the wild.
Maybe even a lot more.
Gators2001 11-14-06, 08:29 PM Got one!
Great Res.
But I hate the aspect ratio. I feel like I am watching DVDs on my old FULL screen days.
Not happy w/ the aspect the new format is in.
BuGsArEtAsTy 11-14-06, 08:52 PM So over 400 HD DVD drives represented in this thread now. Nice.
I'm very surprised at the percentage of people using xbox add on as their first HD-DVD player.
Why? There are over 6 million Xbox 360 owners out there, and at $200, it's a no-brainer purchase.
It would be interesting what would happen when third party HD-DVD rom drives are available for the HTPC for around $50 in next 6 months... along with BD-DVD rom drives....
HD DVD-ROM drives will not be $50 in 6 months. Neither will BD-ROM drives.
Birdman71 11-14-06, 09:40 PM Hey Gators,
I assume you're refering to the 2.35:1 aspect ratio of King Kong. Aspect ratio varies based on OAR. The aspect ratio of the "new format" is the same as anamorphic DVD. It has the advantage of the actual data being true 16x9 at 1920x1080 instead of anamorphic 720x480 that has to be stretched. Just compare it to any LOTR or Star Wars SD DVDs and you'll see that the aspect ratio is the same (unless you've been watching 2.35:1 in a zoom mode so it fills the screen.)
hotwater9 11-14-06, 10:20 PM Like Blippy2005, I grabbed one a CC for $160 plus tax. I don't have a 360 but just built a really nice HTPC that I plan on attaching it to.
5070owner 11-14-06, 11:58 PM Purchased the HD-Dvd add-on Sunday(11/12). Circuit City and Best Buy guys had no clue where they were. Just happened to stop by an EB Games on the way home and they had it....so I bought it. No library of hd-dvds but did enjoy the "free" KingKong hd-dvd. Looks great on a Pio5070.
g55555sim 11-15-06, 01:18 PM as of day and time of post = 419 units sold. not includin the vote dones by spammer (you already know who he is)
puddy77 11-16-06, 03:07 PM I would just like to clarify my vote: I own a standalone. And my roommate bought the 360 drive.
SuperGrafx 11-16-06, 03:11 PM Just got one today thanks to the CC coupon thread (thanks AVS forums!)!
I'm sure I won't be disappointed! :)
Johnny_H 11-16-06, 03:24 PM One for me, one for my brother. Both bought at different CC's with the coupon, best purchase all year as far as i'm concerned.
I picked one up from CC last Sunday. I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet though.
Wow, this is simply amazing. Only been on the streets for a week and we've got numbers in the 500 range. I don't htink the HD-A1 was anywhere near that.
Got mine last week. Super happy. :)
So far I have:
MI Box Set
V for Vendetta
Batman Begins
King Kong
Superman Returns is pre-ordered from Amazon, and will probably pick up Accepted in the next day or two.
Robert Clark 11-16-06, 11:57 PM Oops- chose option one, meant option 5 (have both)...
g55555sim 11-18-06, 04:48 PM as of date and time of post, 495 units sold
BuGsArEtAsTy 11-18-06, 04:59 PM as of date and time of post, 495 units sold
As of date and time of post, at least 511 units sold.
Having >500 for forum poll like this is impressive for the relatively short duration of the poll.
dauthum 11-19-06, 02:35 AM I have an HD-D1, an HD-A1, and bought the add on for portabilty, as both my parents and in-laws have HDTVs but have no want for HD-DVD players, and I don't want to lugg around the stand alone players.
OK, just got it plugged into my 4805. It looks veeerrryyy nice, but my 4805 must feel like abused having all of those pixels thrown at it. ;P
I can't wait to upgrade to 720p. :D
BBS G35 11-19-06, 05:17 AM Got mine, hooked up to Samsung 720P pedestal model HLR5087W.
All i own is King Kong and Corpse Bride.
Thinking of picking up Caddyshack and Goodfellas next
ShinHed 11-20-06, 12:00 AM Me too! All I own is King Kong and Corpse Bride :p
I've been thinking about Goodfellas and Full Metal Jacket next.
JonMarsh 11-20-06, 11:27 PM Have 29 movies in house, 5 more on order for delivery the end of the month. Mostly through Amazon, Walmart and Target don't carry HD formats where I live.
shivdog 11-21-06, 11:09 AM Me too! All I own is King Kong and Corpse Bride :p
I've been thinking about Goodfellas and Full Metal Jacket next.
Do not bother getting Full Metal Jacket, it is not that good of a transfer, "has a lot of noise". The only hd dvd movie I was not impressed with so far and that had that problem.
JuiceRocket 11-21-06, 06:16 PM I grabbed a couple, one for myself, one as a gift to a brother-in-law for Christmas.
So far I've only purchased KK, Riddick, and Grand Prix.
I've got MI:3, Serenity, and Unleashed on our Netflix queue coming up next. I've been checking out the HD-DVD tier thread, so hopefully these will look good.

dragonyeuw 11-21-06, 06:33 PM I bought one this past Saturday with Batman Begins. Now I just need to get my HDTV(should be in the next 2 weeks).

g55555sim 11-25-06, 01:42 PM as at the day and time of post : 582 units sold :)
g55555sim 11-25-06, 05:59 PM crossing over to the other head count,
as of day and time; 138 units of PS3 sold :)
dfriday 11-25-06, 06:09 PM I took advantage of the Circuit City coupon and bought mine for $159.99 plus tax. I am debating whether to buy a vga cable or just wait and see if a hdmi cable comes out. I have a Mitsu WD-y65 that has a PC DVI-I input so I could try the vga to get 1080p. Has anyone here tried the Mitsu via VGA?
LAGOSIAN 11-25-06, 06:25 PM I bought 5of them. I also own a standalone and a sammy Blu-ray.
Hey guys, forgot to inform you that I bought my 6th HD DVD drive on Friday last week! :D
g55555sim 11-25-06, 06:51 PM ^ U are CRAZY :p

LAGOSIAN 11-25-06, 09:10 PM No, just buying one for my personal use. This one is for the PC in my study. :)
g55555sim 11-26-06, 12:37 PM PS3 head count here : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=752948
LiftedTacoma 11-26-06, 12:43 PM i only own the add-on. I was on the fence about HD-DVD/Blu Ray, but for $160 it was too hard to pass up. I just wish my buy.com movies would get here so i could enjoy the player
I am dismayed by forum member: BassTek who voted for all five options. Please take note and take into this into consideration when quoting the figures on the poll.
It's probably pretty cold there, maybe voting makes him feel warm and fuzzy.
Not only basstek, but Dave-Blew-Ray and ScottyL also voted on all options. But even with those multi-votes, the Add on outsold the PS3 by a good 4:1 margin.
This also tends to support the sales disparity between both formats.
Techincally speaking, I own none, but as soon as I get out of this dang place (work) I will be getting the add-on. :D I also own the HD-A1 but will probably be selling it soon unless the 360 really doesn't compare well with it.
I own:
Ray
Swordfish
Training Day
Last Samurai
Batman Begins
Serenity
I rent from Netflix on a constant 3disc rotation (although the gf has been butting into that with her chick flix and TV series discs, lol)

That might be somewhat indicative of attach rates anyways. This isn't primarily a gaming forum so I'd guess there are less PS3 buyers here (gamers) than videophiles (people buying the add-on with specific intent of watching HD media).
g55555sim 11-30-06, 09:02 AM as off date and time of post : 650 units sold
Closing in on 700 players. That may be more than the HD-A1 poll.
SRIBB43 11-30-06, 11:56 PM Just picked up mine tonight at CC for $159
BuGsArEtAsTy 12-01-06, 12:05 AM Closing in on 700 players. That may be more than the HD-A1 poll.
Why would that be surprising? I expect the 360 HD DVD add-on will sell way more units in its first month than the HD-A1 does in its entire lifetime.
It will be many hundreds of thousands of 360 HD DVD drives by the end of 2006 methinks.
I just find it somewhat ironic that the PS3 was supposed to be Blu-ray's Trojan Horse, but in reality it appears the 360 Add on is moreso for HD DVD.

Yes, it is ironic. :p
However, the console-as-high-def-disc-player numbers will likely tip in Sony favour in 2007. That said, as we all know, 100% of people buying 360 HD DVD add-ons buy it to watch movies. PS3 for Blu-ray movies? Not so much.

it helps when the the price of the add on is just $159 at CC :D not forgeting the freebies too :p
the unit count is a week from its one month anniversary is 687 units
markenglert 12-02-06, 04:57 PM Just got my add-on at Best Buy.
Actually, I bought the 360 Premium, HD-DVD add-on, and 2-yr replacement plan for the 360 and only paid $499 including tax!
All those reward points and unspent Best Buy gift cards came in handy.
Can't wait to hook it all up and enjoy HD movies and games... Wii60 all the way.
Until I eventually pick up a PS3, then it's PSWii60, right?
FrankJ.Cone 12-02-06, 06:28 PM Until I eventually pick up a PS3, then it's PSWii60, right?

agogley 12-02-06, 09:47 PM Got one. Add my name to the census.
I trust that everyone is signing the HD DVD Studio Support Petition also? :)
Picked up two. One for 360 and the other for testing on a HTPC. It looks better on the HTPC then the 360 (IMHO) and I can get DTS also with the HTPC. But the software for HTPC is not ready for prime time yet and has some probms with some disks. Most are correctable by frigging around with the options and setup. The only disks of the 15 HD DVD's I have so far that didnt play on the HTPC was the MI box set. Havent found a work around . But both WinDVD and PowerDVD will have HD players out sometime in Dec/Jan. Best $200@each that I spent in a long time.
quikric 12-03-06, 02:20 AM I kinda feel bad,I only have 1.
But on the other hand I do plan on getting a Toshi A1 very soon.
quikric 12-03-06, 02:24 AM Sorry, chaulk it up to sleep deprivation.
I meant to say I have 1 360 add on and plan on getting a beautifull all black Toshi A2 very soon!
Bombthroat 12-03-06, 06:04 PM I bought the add-on drive for the 360.
I figured at that price I can enjoy HD DVD now while I wait for G2 or G3 standalone players to be released and add DTS-HD Master Audio decode support.
I'm really enjoying my purchase! Thanks MS.
YES - I own/purchased 1 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive

g55555sim 12-09-06, 04:15 PM One day more to get the sales figure to 1000 units in time for the add on's first month anniversary ... give me a "G"! Give me an "0"! GO PEOPLE !!!
Ordered 1 addon on Monday. Will be arriving within 10 days:D

Ordered 'Running Scared' from amazon.de AND Pre-Ordered 'The Pianist' from HMV.co.uk.
Will also order 'The Mummy', 'Mummy Returns' and 'Scorpion King' from dvdworldusa before christmas :)
Nucleartiger 12-10-06, 01:15 AM Just purchased the add-on a few days ago and have seen just a little bit of King Kong so far. I was absolutely amazed at the picture and I definitely think it was money well spent.
I will be ordering a few HD-DVDs through Amazon.com here in the next few days.
They also have a 10% off dicount on all HD-DVDs ordered for the next year if you order 3 HD-DVDs together.
oh and can I get a link to that HD-DVD studio support petition?

microsoft has manufactured about 100,000 units, but most sit on store shelves collecting dust due to lack of interest. they've only sold about 20-30,000 to customers. most people just arent interested due to Blu-ray and also the fact that the xbox360 is so loud that it just really is no good for trying to watch movies with. its like leaving a vacuum cleaner running next to your tv.
unlike some people who are okay paying $1000 to get a hidef player that cant play CDs, some people would have to settle with the add on. and comparing the add on 'noise' with the noise of vacuum cleaner is an insult. The >700 people who bought the add on are not stupid enough to get the add on if it is that noisy!!
dphinsx2 12-13-06, 08:07 PM With the definitive technology surround sound setup I have, I don't worry about the fan on the 360.:) I like the price of the add-on, because if hd-dvd doesn't pan out, I am not out a ton of money.

I agree, I see the HD-DVD add on as a great investment whether the format survives or not. ( I certainly hope that it does) My 360 will eventually (when the next gen xbox arrives) get moved to my study upstairs and I will just buy a standalone unit for whichever format has survived for my hometheater room.
bawb3t3a 12-13-06, 10:42 PM I was surprised how well it performed. I have no complaints. I was worried the picture would be a bit soft over VGA, as text from my HTPC always looked soft over VGA but see no hint of the picture being soft at all. HD DVD content is amazing.
Is that 792 units sold on this board or nation wide?
Of those on the board who have seen the survey...
I'm guessing it's about 0.5 % of the users who have bought it in the wild...
amb7247 12-14-06, 07:25 PM #1. My comptuer is louder than my 360. In fact I'd rather leave the Blu-ray player on the shelf. Let's see, a format that may not make it. costs around a $1000 and has no better quality than HD-DVD. I'll take HD-DVD anytime.
g55555sim 12-15-06, 02:48 PM as of date and time of post, 808 units of XBox 360 HD DVD add on sold to AVS forum members alone :)
g55555sim 12-20-06, 12:24 AM oh dear .. no one is buying the add on anymore .. are nearing the saturation point oredi? :p
coolblackknight 12-20-06, 06:14 AM I own/purchased 1 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive also.
.....
dphinsx2 12-20-06, 07:20 AM A friend of mine at work bought one, does that count? He has the hd-dvd drive and a ps3. We watched x-men 3 last night on the ps3 and it looked worse then the regular dvd.
SpoonKiller 12-20-06, 11:28 AM I was going to wait to see if Microsoft was going to release an HDMI cable before jumping in, but I couldn't wait any longer.

:D I am not going to comment on that !! :D

Scott Tucker 12-23-06, 08:34 PM Add one more. I got mine today. What a piece of cake to install and it fits on the same shelf as the Xbox.
Scott
mortifer 12-23-06, 11:41 PM Count me in, picked one up on the 22nd.
Bought one two days ago for the HTPC. I don't have the XBOX console. Also did a serious hardware upgrage -- could have gotten two Toshiba standalones, or a Sony Blu-ray for the money. And I still don't know if it's going to work. Expensive hobby.
delrmx01 12-26-06, 06:01 PM Count me in --- mine is actuallyl a month old...
Got the drive from my girlfriend for christmas for use on our home HDTV (contest won RCA 52" CRT RPTV).
So movie count so far:
-King Kong
-Caddyshack
Of course, I brought the 360/HDDVD with me when visiting parents and now my father is hooked on XBL Arcade games and wants a 360 to play Texas Hold'Em. To sweeten the deal, tomorrow morning we're picking up a Sammy HL-S6187W to replace the 32" Aquos panel (LC-32G4U) they've got in the living room that occupies a huge gaping hole in the built-in - so he's gonna NEED an HD-DVD drive to take advantage of those 61" of gorgeous 1080p :D Will report back on what new flicks I pick up to showcase all the awesome power of HD to my doubting mother.
Well, the Sammy DLP is absolutely gorgeous, can't wait to get it all tuned in! Picked up Superman Returns and Batman Begins as well, both are a great showcase for HD over the X360+HD-DVD. Too bad soon I have to go back to my dinky tv and leave this beauty 500 miles away :(
dphinsx2 12-27-06, 11:33 PM Time to save your money.
StimpsonJCat 12-28-06, 11:52 AM Add me to the list. I got mine this weekend to go with the 360 I got for X-mas. I'm very happy with it.
Tipsy Mcfragger 12-28-06, 04:58 PM I bought one for myself, and another one as an Xmas gift for a friend.
Stoney Jackson 12-28-06, 05:32 PM Someone gave me an XBox 360 for Christmas, so I went out on Dec 26 with some gift cards for Best Buy and picked up the HD DVD Drive. Only have King Kong so far, that came with it. My wife and I watched it, having never seen the movie before. It was an awesome experience and I can't wait to pick up some more movies!
I got mine for Xmas. Riddick was AMAZING.
Hi Folks -
Because of the issues I had when getting PowerDVD Ultra working with the Xbox HD DVD addon player, I've started a thread called "How to get the HD DVD add-on working on your PC in five minutes flat" where I've laid out the key things that I found you have to watch out for.
You can also discuss installation problems there and share configs.
I've done Nvidia and laptops first - and I'll be getting to ATI installs later this week, as well as how to get the multichannel lossless audio over things like Fireware (ie from Laptops).
The thread is here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=775177
Hope this helps some of you out!
Happy Holidays
g55555sim 12-29-06, 02:19 PM 930 units sold to AVS members alone
lonewolfcub 12-30-06, 10:08 AM Just picked mine up a couple of days ago from Circuit City. $40 off coupon worked like a charm for me.
bmoney017 12-30-06, 11:40 PM I got mine for christmas. I didnt see KK before this, and it looked great. I also bought Casino and Goodfellas. I was hoping to just rent HD DVDs from my local Blockbuster, but of course the people there have no clue whats going on. I keep getting different answers. Hopefully they will have HD DVDs within the next few months
Looks like you can add me to the list of owners. May still pickup a A2/E1 later on.
Sanitarium 12-31-06, 08:32 PM Snagged one last week. Love it.
Happy New Year, Everyone!
Enjoy your HD DVDs next year - have fun!
curtis104 01-01-07, 01:01 PM Add me to the list. I bought one with the CircuitCity Coupon about a month ago.
g55555sim 01-01-07, 01:02 PM ^ .. hmmm people .. i cant add you people in the list. i hope when you all say that "add me to the list", you all did indeed voted. thankies :)
Wow, cracked 1000!
Not too shabby!
ZeroCorpse 01-04-07, 04:07 PM Just got one. I like it. My motivation was that someone in my household falls asleep while watching DVDs at night, and I wasn't really interested in seeing the drive in the 360 wear out because it's been spinning on the main menu of a DVD for 9 hours. Oh, yeah, and I figured I might actually purchase some HD movies that I've been holding off on with DVD.
At least if the HD-DVD drive breaks down, it's not a console-priced repair or replacement.
Got mine last week and voted. Nice. A bit loud - but then again my setup is right near my head.
Still thinking about getting the A2 though - maybe the add-on will be sold, but then again since it is not taking up a seperate input on my receiver I might just keep it anyway.
:)
I have the A1 but saw an advertisement online for the add on for 99.00(had to be a typo). I printed it and took it to BB where they (suprisingly) price matched. It seems a little buggy, and has obvious sound issues, but is a good second player, a sub 100.00 one at that.
g5555sim 01-04-07, 10:36 PM What a nice day to celebrate the new year - 1000 unit to celebrate the new year . the figure is equavalent to 4% of the TOTAL STANDALONE BD player sales. The 1000 unit is just sales to AVS forum members ALONE !! ................. LOL
ashokn225 01-04-07, 11:34 PM Just got mine!
Hi Folks,
Keith from Sigma Designs is running a good poll here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=781045
I suggest that you go and make your mark...

g5555sim 01-06-07, 12:40 PM as the time and date of post .. 1011 units of XBox 360 add on sold to AVS members ALONE ;)
I bought one with a CC $40 off coupon on New Years day. Bought PowerDVD Ultra on line a couple nights ago. Everything has been completely straightforward except for the asbolutely horrible shopping experience you get with 5 Element, Cyberlink's eCommerce partner. I never saw anything so rediculuous as that. Installed the driver from MS, installed PowerDVD Ultra and away it went... AMD 500+, MSI 7600GT with HDCP... works like a champ. Needs some fine tuning to get calibrated to the Tosh A1 level... but I love 1080P native.
hawks05 01-07-07, 12:27 PM Picked one up yesterday for $120,had a coupon. Watched some King Kong, looked just as good as I had hoped.
Informed myself here in the Forum and on some websites and bought a drive yesterday together with Tokyo Drift. The Picture uqality is amazing and I am pretty happy with my purchase. Total recall is already ordered and Batman Begins will als be bought as soon as it is released here in Februrary.
Acronos Myth 01-09-07, 12:11 PM Just got it.. haven't tried it yet.. can't wait.
BTW, I was vote 1000 in this poll. :)
Nike-Air 01-09-07, 12:20 PM Just got it last week using the $40 off CC coupon...installed on my PC using PowerDVD Ultra... looks great!
I will say this: If the audio issues are not solved soon you can take me off the list, as I will return mine or unload it - even at a loss and return to my wait for a decent stand alone player.
Last chances before the poll closes

polishhammer 01-13-07, 05:50 PM Bought mine a week ago. Love it! I used the extra money saved buying the add-on to purchase Batman Begins, Full Metal Jacket, Goodfellas, and Casino all on HD-DVD. Managed to squeeze them all in over the past week. I'm most impressed by the difference I found in the dramatic movies. I knew Batman would look great, but Casino and Goodfellas really wowed me.
luigionlsd 01-13-07, 11:11 PM Im a proud owner... I just dont know if I want to see King Kong again....
You said it, buddy...
Got the thing for Christmas, and I own 6 discs:
King Kong, Batman Begins, Pitch Black, Riddick, V for Vendetta and Serenity.
guycadic 01-13-07, 11:23 PM Been using mine for a while. Works well. no complaints.
BurlySmurf 02-01-07, 12:39 AM I bought one to get my foot in the HD market. I didn't have a plan to get a PS3 and wanted HD movies. I have nothing but love for this drive. HDDVD movies look amazing.
Fantastic buy! Run and get one, now!
I will say this: If the audio issues are not solved soon you can take me off the list, as I will return mine or unload it - even at a loss and return to my wait for a decent stand alone player.

cobolisdead 09-10-07, 02:08 PM YES - I own 1 XBox 360 HD DVD add on drive, and it is my only way of watching my 20 or so HD DVDs.
xboxboi 10-19-07, 09:28 PM time to revive this thread :p
xboxboi 10-19-07, 09:30 PM should i or should i not start a head count for other hd dvd hardwares :p
ncinsguy 10-19-07, 11:04 PM i've had mine for about 8 months and all was well til the new hd dvds came out with the web extras and cyberlink trashed their software so now few of my movies play normally. not a happy owner now
IndyBlues 11-26-07, 06:15 PM I just bought this add on, and I love it. Only thing, the other night, while watching some bonus features on the SD DVD "Ratattoulie"(sp), the drive started to sound very loud. A whirring noise, if you will. Has this been a problem with these, or do I have a lemon?
Mike
dphinsx2 11-26-07, 07:53 PM Mines never done it. Maybe it was how the disk was sitting inside the drive?
awdpaul 11-26-07, 10:53 PM Got one as well, gift from my wife. Recently upgraded my 360 to one with HDMI for full 1080p. It looks sweet. Haven't had many issues with it. Got me into HD DVD and I am hooked! Still probably the cheapest way to 1080p HD DVD out there (if you got HDMI 360 anyway) assuming you already own the 360.

You can use the built in drive of the 360 for SD DVDs.
