I wrote a post yesterday looking at my new finished basement and I have a seating distance of 8 to 10 feet. The lighting will never be too bright but I am wondering what TV to get. My budget is not limitless but certainly I want the best for my dollar. I have ruled out LCD...I have a Sony XBR 32'' in my other room and I love that TV but when I want to build a home theatre, I am thinking that LCD will not be as fluid of a picture as plasma. So, I have narrowed down to these choices

1. Panasonic 65'' 1080p (maybe the 50'' too)
2. Pioneer FHD1 50''
3. Pioneer 1540HD 60''
4. Pioneer 6070HD

I am stuck at what to pick...my purchase is not until January so is there another set that is coming out?

What I like about the 1540 is the home media option to stream video and audio but if I am looking at a 60'' tv from 8 to 10 feet away, will I notice an improvement with 1080p sets? I know this has been debated endlessly so any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

It's all about the bejamins.

Going with a Panny 50 720p is between one half and one third ofthe cost of a 60-65 1080p.

Bigger picture is great. 1080 p - not as important for the foreseeable future to me due to the issues of vision and dearth of 1080p source.

I went "cheap" Another option to consider - 50 plasma and 720p projector. 100" screen! Esprcially good alternative if light is not an issue.

All of those are nice. Let the 50" 1080p Pan come out and by the holidays comming up, let the companies go into panel wars. The prices will be cheaper by Xmas and see what shakes out for the best money. I think it is alot in here doing the same thing. I am.

The best tv i have ever owned was one of the first 32" Sony xbr, two tuners, freeze, replay, would show like lil frames of maybe 10 or 12 channels at a time. This was in my bedroom and it finally died on me and i am waiting to do what you are doing. Fujitsu is comming out with some new 1080p sets but they are to expensive. So i am looking at alot of the same ones you are looking at.

It was one review of the FHD1 and it was a very good review and maybe in the next few months it will be many reviews on all of the above you mentioned plus the 1080p Panny sets. I would have already bought the 1130 or 1140 but i am trying to hold out for 1080p. I have a cheap set in my bedroom now and a 34" Sony crt in den. The Sony has a great pic but i liked my 32" better.

I like the media center also and the FHD1 is bare bones i am thinking. It is a hard decision.

These are all good sets although I would include the NEC 60" also.

1080p is great in a 50" if and only if you sit right up close say 4-6'. Beyond 8' I can't tell the difference in resolution and many others have noticed the same. At 9-10' I personally would prefer a 60" to a 50" display if price were not a major concern. Above 60", I would definitely want 1080p at your distances.

So if you can afford it and if you like the picture on the 65" 1080p Panny, that would be a great choice. The only drawback I could see is it is a first gen display.

If you drop back to a 60" size and don't wait for this year's 1080p 60" displays, then I would consider the NEC 60" (60xr5) along with the Pioneers.

Cheers, :)
