Ok, I received my Japanese 60GB PS3 today and I am having an issue.
I've got the PS3 connected (via HDMI) to a Panasonic 42" plasma, model number TH-42PX500 (Japanese TV).
The PS3 is set to output to 720p, which my TV can handle.
Everything is fine until I launch a PS3 game. Once I do that, after the "Playstation 3" logo appears, the screen goes black. The game is loading fine, I just cant see it.
The only way I can regain control of my TV at this point is to tune into the regular TV channels using my TV remote. Only then I can use the input selection button to get back to HDMI. Once I do this, all is well.
My guess is that the PS3 is sending some kind of signal through the HDMI cable that is making the TV unhappy.
Any ideas?
Just for fun, I tried 1080i and seems the PS3 treats it the same as 420i. It looked terrible.
Methinks we are going to see a lot of PS3 updates in the near future.
Bad_Boy_ 11-12-06, 07:02 AM I think theres a menu setting for game resolution and a setting for menu resolution. Look around for Game Output settings I think. I wish I could help more but I wont have a ps3 till friday lol.
CheapyD 11-12-06, 07:09 AM Thanks for the reply. There doesn't seem to be seperate settings for game and menu output.
Besides, it seems the settings are correct as the image looks fine once I am able to regain control of my TV and set it back to HDMI.
By the way, you can check out the menu settings online. I can't post the link because I don't have 5 posts yet :(
blitz6speed 11-12-06, 07:48 AM Welcome cheapyd.
I can only recommend trying a 2nd HDMI port if your plasma has one. If it still has issues, use a different HDMI cord perhaps. And if all else fails, get the component cables for a PS2 and try those.
CheapyD 11-12-06, 07:52 AM Thanks for suggestion. You know what's weird. When I played a PS1 game, it worked fine. I don't currently have any Japanese DVDs (or Bluray movies) otherwise I'd test them out.
Temporaryscars 11-12-06, 09:01 AM Well, considering you have an xbox 360 that runs fine, i'm assuming that your TV doesn't have any trouble receiving an HD signal.
Because of that, my guess would be that either your system is having trouble outputting the signal, or your TV's HDMI port is defective.
If you can, try your PS3 on another TV with HDMI. That'll narrow it down for you.
he SED what!? 11-12-06, 09:06 AM Also the PS3 required firmware updates right out of the box to play a couple games (Madden and RFOM off the top of my head) you might want to check that out as well.
Temporaryscars 11-12-06, 09:12 AM Yes, def. check out the firmware upgrades.
Mr Ian B 11-12-06, 01:21 PM Perhaps the HDMI output is not turned on right out of the box. Check to see if there is an option to turn it on in the menus. This was the case on my Toshiba HD-DVD, I connected the rca video cable and went to the menu to turn on the HDMI output and then, I got picture through the HDMI.
Good luck,
Ian B
Mongoos150 11-12-06, 02:05 PM Definitely try it out on another TV to see if it's the PS3 or the TV.

The recipe to a successful HDCP handshake:
1) Make sure the source device is set to ouput via HDMI.
2) Turn the source device off.
3) Turn on the display and ensure the HDMI input is set correctly.
4) Turn the source device back on.
Problem solved.
In rare cases, you might have to do a first hook-up using composite or component cables to set the source device to ouput via HDMI.
In most cases, you are fine if you turn on and configure your display HDMI input before your turn on the source device.
CheapyD 11-12-06, 07:09 PM I am able to correctly display the ps3 menus through the HDMI input, but the TV freezes up and displays a blank picture once I launch a game. From there, i can't access most of the TV remote functions, but if i change to the normal TV channels then I can select the HDMI input and everything looks fine.
Very strange.
HeadRusch 11-12-06, 07:32 PM CHEAPYD! Our Man In Japan. You jokers know Cheapy's a big celebrity right? www.cheapassgamer.com.....Bloomberg TV.....his website is the only reason I can afford to buy all this HT junk by getting me my games on the cheap ;)
Anyhow....this ALMOST sounds tome like an HDMI handshake issue. Like once the game starts loading, the HDMI loses sync and breaks the connection, hence you don't see anything. But then the whole TV locking up thing....thats definately a page from bizarro world. IMHO? We're seeing our first glimpses of HDMI 1.3 incompatibilities.
But I also think we're going to be seeing an awul lot of issues like this in the weeks to come. HDMI is quirky as hell to begin with. Now with Sony pushing HDMI 1.3, god only knows the number of incompatibilities that we're going to see start cropping up.
While this may not sound like an ideal solution...until we see some firmware patches....Go Component. 98% of the video quality.
PS: Cheapy whats the native rez of that set....its a 1366x768 set or....???
CheapyD 11-12-06, 09:07 PM Ah, but the reason I want to use HDMI is for upscaling regular DVDs. The PS3 is going to be my primary DVD player too.
Sorry, I don't know the native rez of the TV, I believe it's US equivalent is the TH-42PX500U.
HeadRusch 11-12-06, 09:43 PM Uhhhhhhhhhhh...unless its a japan-only feature, the PS3 doesn't upscale DVD's......(Unless they snuck that in at the last minute!). Its one of those big features that was missing from the unit that made people scratch their heads.
Unless thats addressed in the update you download the first time you sign on the PS3 online....<shrug>
Does your TV do a lousy job upscaling to its native rez then?
CheapyD 11-13-06, 01:53 AM It's my only DVD player with an HDMI connection. I was under the impression that the TV won't do any upscaling without an HDMI conneciton.
It's my only DVD player with an HDMI connection. I was under the impression that the TV won't do any upscaling without an HDMI conneciton.
HDTV internal upscale is a tricky thing. I am familiar with Sony and Samsung's tools and they can upscale on any cable type. Only a dedicated player such as an upscale DVD unit must use HDMI. Some TV's will only give you the upscale option when you set the source to 480i as well. 480p can shut these tools down.
The PS3 it's self will not upscale your DVDs though. Try running a 480i source and see if your TV gives the upscale option to you. I'm not sure you can push 480i over HDMI though. On my 1080p DLP, 480i over HDMI results in signal loss.
CheapyD 11-13-06, 06:26 AM Ah, I guess we can always hope for a firmware upgrade for DVD upscaling on the PS3.
Someone suggested I try upgrading the firmware of the TV to try and fix my HDMI handshake issue, but I think I will hold off on that to see if Sony updates their firmware soon.
Monsters 11-13-06, 06:44 AM Aren't Japanese games PAL, not NTSC? Oh, but i see now that you are in Tokyo so nevermind.
CheapyD 11-13-06, 06:53 AM Japan uses NTSC.
HeadRusch 11-13-06, 07:40 AM All fixed-pixel devices (Plasma, LCD, Lycos, SXRD, etc) upscale what you are watching, because they can't display anything else. If your plasma is 720p then its been upscaling every source that goes into it to 720p. Your cable, your DVD Player through component, your SNES via Composite...its all being converted to 720p because thats all the display can output.
An upscaling DVD player will simply do the conversion at the source rather than sending a 480p signal to your 720p display and letting the display turn it into 720p.
The arguement is that its better to convert at the source than at the destination, but this rule doesn't always apply.
Cheapy, suggest you take a trip to the local Super-Electronics-Hyper-Mart in your neighborhood and buy a standard upscaling DVD player with HDMI out, just to try and see if the image is better than what you're going to get with the TV alone doing the upscaling.
CheapyD 11-14-06, 02:22 AM Thanks for the advice...
Just for fun, I made a little youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXefPf4m8Vo
By the lock up of your TV, it seems more like your tv's problem. I was playing ps3 in a showroom yesterday with a panny projector through HDMI, and I don't see any problem. The sales told me he had already upgrade ps3's firmware.
Just a question, when you play your ps2 with component, is it full screen on your plasma or not with side bars?
CheapyD 11-14-06, 04:45 AM Yes, full screen with component.
blitz6speed 11-14-06, 08:28 AM CheapyD
Ive learned that there is a auto HDMI setup built into the PS3. They say to do the following:
Turn on TV and set input to HDMI port being used
Make sure PS3 is connected via HDMI
Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds. It should automagically configure your PS3 to the TV's native res for all settings. Give it a try.
CheapyD 11-14-06, 09:00 AM blitz6speed, I don't use the word "hero" very often, but you are the greatest hero in American history. Thank you!!!!
Success!

Enjoy your ps3 baby! Im looking forward to mine as well!
CheapyD 11-15-06, 06:38 PM Ok...time for an update.
The video stuff is now working fine, but I have an audio issue.
I need to run a digital optical cable to my receiver (logitech z-5500).
So, I change my audio settings on the PS3 to use the optical out (instead of the HDMI audio), and guess what? It negates the HDMI auto-setup that I ran!
I've tried running the digital optical cable from my TV to the receiver (and using HDMI audio), but I can't get anything higher than Dolby Pro Logic II.
Nothing is ever easy.
HeadRusch 11-15-06, 07:00 PM Sony Rules, they're really thought of everything. :)
...can you re-set the HDMI output again like you did before to get it to recognize both now that you have the Optical Output set to the TOSLINK connector?? Maybe the setup is smarter than we think it is.
Running the optical cable from the TV to the receiver, the TV is probably converting the HDMI audio to 2 channel stereo....which is then output to your receiver, which is why you're only seeing Dolby prologic II (its designed to be used with Stereo L/R sources).
Dont give up the 5.1 surround, thats for sure......
Nows about the time to start bitching about how every universal remote ever made so far (including $10,000+ home automation systems) are now rendered useless since the PS3 has no legacy IR port, its bluetooth only......bastards...

Let us know if re-running the auto set-up with Audio Output set to Optical Digital gets both proper HDMI video output and proper Optical Digital output to your receiver.
I must this is a big worry at this point for early adopters.
Knowing Sony, they might assume people will go HDMI end to end. I hope it's not the case or they can take it back.

Unfortunately, when you do the auto-setup, it switches both video and audio (and tells you it's doing so) to HDMI.
Bluetooth!! That's even better, may be you can use your SE mobile phone to control PS3!!
IT's dump if you can't use both HDMI audio and optical out at the same time when outputing 5.1!!
Did you setup the max resolution for HDMI out?
ctorretta 11-22-06, 08:18 PM Yo, so I had the same problem. Had to do the auto-HDMI setup and it killed the audio.
But you can go back into the system settings and change your audio back to Optical, and it won't mess with the HDMI video part of it.
Now I'm rocking HDMI with optical audio. It's an easy fix, let me know if this works for you.

CheapyD 11-22-06, 09:49 PM Have you actually tried playing a game (or DVD)?
It works fine in the menus, but when I launch a game or DVD, I get a blank screen.
ctorretta 11-22-06, 10:40 PM Hrrm, yeah movies and games play fine - both audio and video. There is a decent bit of flickering when I go from the menu to the game/dvd as it switches to the right resolution (or something) but the image pops up after half a second.
Sounds like an HDMI handshake problem of some sort. If you cycle inputs does it the image come back?
Out of curiousity, did switching the audio in the system setup to optical at least fix the sound issue in the menu?

Quick Setup Info:
Samsung 50" 1080P DLP TV, Samsung 1000w 5.1 Home Theater Sorround Sound System, all hooked up via HDMI
Last night a friend of mine brought over his PS3 to my house and we tried hooking it up via HDMI to the TV, at first i got no video or sound whatsoever, then i read the post that cheapyd was having a similar problem, and by holding down the power button for 5 seconds the ps3 reset itself and gave me video and audio. So I learned how to fix that problem. But I have encountered another problem. My Samsung Sorround Sound System has an HDMI IN and OUT port. I am running an HDMI cable from the PS3 to the HDMI IN port to my Sorround Sound System and running an HDMI cable from the OUT port of my sorround sound system to my TV. When I turn on the PS3 i get a delay with the video or audio which is really annoying, but when it does finally come up I get 1080P video but not full 5.1 sorround sound. This happens with games and Blu-Ray movies. This has to be a problem with the PS3 because i am running Comcast HD cable to the HDMI IN port and when i switch channels from a 5.1 broadcast to 2.1 it works fine. I think the PS3 HDMI connection is having issues negotiating true digital video and audio at the same time. The only way i was able to fix this problem was directly plugging in the HDMI cable from the PS3 to my TV, and using an optical cable from the PS3 to my sorround sound system, and then telling the PS3 to use manual setup for video and Optical setup for audio. This really sucks because the whole point of an HDMI cable is to get true digital video and audio out of one cable. Sony has to be aware of this issue and i'm hoping they fix it with a firmware upgrade. Any thoughts???
maroulis 12-12-06, 10:20 PM Been happily using my PS3 on HDMI output 1080i working no problems since launch. I haven't played with it for the last 2-3 days so tonight I was going to watch Mission Impossible 3 on Blu-Ray..
Switched on PS3 .. nothing although I can hear music (I was using HDMI for video out to TV and the PS3 connector for audio out to my surround system). Restart TV, checked HDMI cable (first suspect of failure) everything is ok.. checked TV connects ok using same HDMI cable to my samsung Blu-Ray Player... Switched PS3 on/off to no avail, tried the 5 seconds hold on power button, resets the settings again blank picture, removed HDMI used regular cable here we go 480i seems ok, plug in HDMI cable I get notice it was detected switch to HDMI my TV shows 480p resolution and BLANK SCREEN!!!
I've had it, spent last 3 hours trying to get it working will call Sony tomorrow.. and before you ask yes I've been playing with it just fine last 3 weeks, yes my TV supports 720p/1080i it's Philips LCD 37", yes the HDMI cable works, yes my TV's HDMI input works fine as my Samsung player displays ok, my PS3 has 1.30 software loaded - so I can only assume that the HDMI output on the PS3 died on me quite unexpectily... Will call Sony first thing tomorrow morning and try to see what the hell I should do!.. meaningless to say i'm soooo pissed off right now!
anybody else had issue w/their HDMI? any suggestions?
Morning,
A friend brought over a PS3.
I have a Westinghouse LVM-42w2.
We got it working over the HDMI.
The Movie had sparkles at 1080p.
Madden looked great.
Powered down the PS3.
Turned off tv.
Later that day.
I underplug hdmi from PS3.
Plug the hdmi from the DishDVR to the LVM-42w2
..
The ..greenest.. tinted picture on the LVM-42w2.
The other ports, av, dvi, and vga work fine.
The hdmi input is green.
I can see the satellite picture but.
Its green.
Changing contrast and brightness.
More or less green green green.
..
I have rebooted the DishDVR.
Factory reset the Westinghouse.
Unplugged the Westinghouse for hours.
Used a different hdmi cable.
..
The PS3 can't seem to sync to the hdmi on the Westinghouse anymore.
Tried the 5 second, second beep thing.
Nothing.
My hdmi input is still super green.
I'm sad.

blinkin 01-12-07, 09:42 AM i am having this same issue and wonder if using a reciever that has hdmi input and output would solve this issue by acting as a mediator?
Shaggy Wang 01-23-07, 12:53 AM Just got the ps3 a week ago.
Pluged it into a sony 55" t.v with a HDMI cable. Audio and video thru HDMI worked fine, no hitches what so ever. Resistance: Fall of man played awesomely well. Though I didn't check if resistance was playing at 1080i, I was assuming it was since when ps3 boots up it displays in 1080i. O yea, this t.v is about a year or two old so 1080p wasn't or something around, I guess.
The issue with HDMI not sending signals to surround sound is something else I believe
Don't hold my word for it but I believe that HDMI does not send out True Dobly Digtal surround sound. This isn't the fault of the ps3. I believe, there are some untrue facts about HDMI or what I like the call techincal hicups that make you fart.
The reason I say this, is because I was setting up a new home theather system and ran everything, with hdmi cables.
It went Cable to receiver(in), Dvd To receiver(in), receiver to t.v(out)
Reciever had 3 HDMI, 2 in/1 out. Even though I connected it this way, I still couldn't get any sound from speaker that were connected to receiver except from t.v speakers( I think I got 2 channels outta the sound system but I don't remember). Then finally, I hooked up the cable to receiver with optical and dvd to receiver with coxial. Finally, I got true dobly digtal surround sound.
This might hold true with PS3 though I didn't try HDMI and optical at same time because me parents didn't want to mess with the new stuff after we so pain stakenly screwed around with it to work and make it look like it wasn't don't by trained monkeys.
U can go to other websites to check on the HDMI problems, like "home theater spot"
Basically HDMI isn't what we think it is yet.
I don't know if this is specific to all HDMI or just some home theaters, but I noticed the same problem with my HDMI connected from a device (DVD/CABLe/ETc) to my receiver and out ot the Plasma. The sound only output to the Tv and I had to utilize the optical connection to have audio on the receiver. apparently the HDMI passes the audio on and does not output to the Audio receiver using HDMI (P.S. Sony !!! is crap). I only bought the receiver to use the HMDI connections and apparently still need to use the optical outputs.
dale1075 10-26-07, 08:38 AM hi guys,
i have the same problem w/ my PS3 and hitachi projector also. i can set my projector to 1080 but when i play dvds i get picture w/ purple tint all over (sometimes greenish).
i tried updating the latest firmware but still got the same problem.
but the other day while browsing the setting of my projector, i accidentally saw the color space configuration setting in its input menu. it was set to auto. so i tried the other option. when i set it to RGB the picture went to 1080. very crisp and upscaled.
so now im using hdmi for video and the PS3 multi for auto w/o problems.
so, i recommend for those whose using HDMI for their video to browse the picture and color setting in the input menu of ur display.
give it a try and it might work for u also.
hope this help.
