I just wanted to throw a post up here letting anybody who has this system and is looking for some speaker stands that I found a set that work really well.

They are the Omni Mount Wooden speaker stands.. I got the 24" for my KDS-60A2000 and it puts them at the perfect height for my TV and my sitting posistion... Here is a link to the ones I got... Link (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/OmniMount-24-Wood-Speaker-Stand-Pair-WS24/sem/rpsm/oid/68187/catOid/-12935/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) .. The go together very easy.. have good wire management and the top plate that you mount the speakers to are almost the exact size of the front speakers that come with the S790.

My only concern about them is that the base isnt really heavy enough to avoid accidental tip over or something.. so I may figure out how to add some weight to the stand bases.. but other than that.. they are a very good match.

I gotta snap a photo of my setup.. ill post it here.

Edit: Here are a few pics of my setup.

Those look like a good option. I have the Onkyo S770 but have replaced the stock speakers with Athena B2's in the front and B1's in the rear. I'm using these stands (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?PartNumber=240-762&raid=45&rak=240-762) from Parts Express. Stability is OK but those with small kids may want something a little more reassuring. For the price you can't go wrong.

I used Atlantic speaker stands, the ones with storage for CD's and DVD's. These stands can be configured to be as low as perhaps 10" and as high as perhaps 40", depending on how many sections are used. Here is a link to a site where I found them for sale, although they were cheaper at my local Fry's Electonics Store-- http://www.allmultimediastorage.com/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=86935210

There are 4 sections--I used 3 for the RF and LF speakers, which did allow me to very precisely "frame" my monitor, but I did have to modify the wire conduit to allow me to screw mount the speakers to the top plate. Having done that, though, I have the same problem with them being top heavy. The Atlantic stands have a "cavity" in the base that has some sort of a plaster block in it, probably to add weight, and the next thing I'll do is remove the plaster plug and fill the cavity with lead "shot" from a firearms store. That will add considerably to the weight at the bottom, but I suspect that the speakers will still be somewhat top heavy. Since I'm an empty-nester, that's not a problem for me--I can just be careful as I move them about, which I do depending on whether I'm watching a movie or listening to music. I used all 4 sections for the 4 surround speakers, which positioned them very well at ear level. The factory mounting system worked very well for the smaller surround speakers that came with my 780 system--no need to screw mount them to the top plate, like the front speakers.

Having surfed into the link you posted to see how your bases are formed, I think there might be a way to mount a thin "barbell" weight to the bottom of your bases and add weight--you would probably need to use construction glue and some sort of lag bolt or large screw through the center hole in the "donut weight". From what I've seen in the stores, the iron weights are thinner than the plastic covered concrete weights--some are very thin, about a half inch or so, which might make them work well since your stands have spikes on them.

I'm glad to see you stand mounted your speakers. It was the "key" to getting good sound out of the HTIB speakers that came with my HT-S780 system, although there was considerable placement experimentation and calibration work that was also helpful. I believe that if more HTIB purchasers would stand mount their front/surround speakers and experiment more with placement and room treatments they would find much less need to replace the speakers--I'm very happy with the sound my system produces.

did you notice a difference going from the onkyo speakers to the athenas? if so, was it subtle or dramatic?

I have the same stands for my fronts (Onkyo 990THX) and the speakers are the same size as in your system. The stands are actually surprisingly sturdy, but if a kid did run into them they would tip :(

I'm looking for something for my center channel (Sony XBR1) which I currently have under the TV. I would like to put it higher as it is a space inconenience on the stand.

I'm also looking for solutions about the rears. I'm moving into a new house and will mount them, but I'm wondering if I can have the surround backs roughtly directly over my head, maybe a foot back.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Updated post with pictures and info.

Im going to look for some lead weights or something to make the base heavier Should be able to hide them in the cable management post with little effort. I have a 4 y/o kid running around that is sure to knock these over. Usually they are tucked behind the TV for normal everyday viewing.. only pull them out when im watching a movie or a good show on TV or something.

Hey mastamoon, could you kindly post a pic of you surround and surround back setup? I'm looking at options for mounting them in our new house, and want to know what to buy in preparation.

Thanks!

JohnnytheSkin.. My rears are sitting on 2 end tables at each end of my couch. Nothing really to show. Now that I got the fronts on stands, the rear setup is horrible.. so I gotta either find some slim stands or some wall mounts.

Hey Mastamoom-not to get off the subject, but waht are your impressions of the 790??
The 790 comes with a 503 receiver, no?
I would check Ebay for speaker stands-I have come across some great deals in the past.

What other speaker stands would be recommended? I will be purchasing the SILVER S790 and would like the stands to match.

Another question I have is I own a SONY SXRD and was wondering how I can secure the center speaker to the top of the television?

I built my own with banister supports and some particle board from Lowes. Total expenditure was $20 (unpainted, but that's about another $5.) It might not be practical for most, but not too bad if you're into woodworking, and they're just as solid as anything I saw at Fry's or Bestbuy. Mine stand 37", which puts the tweeters at my ear height when seated.

aren't you concerned about getting proper airflow to your receiver and your dvd player getting too warm? I've heard the receiver gets pretty hot.

I run a pair of stands I picked up at Ikea :) Cheap and they work great. I also made a hidden shelf behind my TV for the center channel. It looks like its floating ontop of the TV....

I bought my S790 at Vann's just before Xmas - their sale price was $399, no tax, free shipping, and included the stands too.

Sorry....not enough posts yet to submit links, but here's the model name/number: Sanus BF24B

I use my Mirage speakers for my fronts, and the Onkyo fronts are now on the stands as my surrounds (I set it up as a 5.1 due to limited space). The stands are now $50, but are quite sturdy, have good wire management, and the speakers fit almost perfectly - I used two-sided tape to keep them on. The base is pretty heavy, but thin enough that I could slide it under my end tables, so they ain't going anywhere.

Those stands. Damn, do they go perfect with the Onkyo S790's. You can get them off Walmarts site for $65. I'll post pics so you can see how awesome they look with the setup. It holds 200 DVD's & Games. 300 if you use HDDVD or Bluray Cases because you can stack on top of each row.

Btw, what are you guys using to place your center speakers on?

I was thinking of using this to place my center speaker on top of the XBR2.

Dude you can go to Walmart on get you some slim rear speaker stands for $60. Totally slim and you can conceal them however which way you want. And the good thing is. They support the weight of the S790's rear speakers.

So how did you mount the speakers to the stands?

So how did you mount the speakers to the stands?

Universally it comes with either sticky strips, velcro, or by metal adjuster that sits at the back of the speaker in the middle and holds it in place for a sturdy fitting.

You can find those rear speaker stands a heckuva lot cheaper than $60/pr. I don't think I ever paid over $30 for mine.

Comes with two different mounting plates.

Doubt it, the fronts are 17" tall.

I've had some rear JBL's that are 10H x 6.5"W x 7"D which were fine. 17" tall speaker would probably make the stands top heavy.

For the fronts, you'd probably want something like these. You can get them in 24 and 31 inch heights. Amazon has them between $27 and $32 a pair. Obviously they could work for rear speakers too.

Yeah, I know, I have the stands.
But the tape is pretty weak for the weight of these speakers, and that metal L piece doesn't reach all the way up to the keyhole on the speaker.

Velcro Industrial strength strips will hold your speakers to the mounting plate for sure.

I've got 7lb satellites on my adjustable height stands and 14lb bookshelfs on my 24" stands. No threat of either one of the speakers falling off the stand, even with little kids around.

You can find the velcro strips at any crafts store or drug strore for about $3. And they can be cut to whatever size you need. I cut mine into 4 squares and place one on each corner of the top plate. Then match it up with strips on the speaker. Holds fine.
http://store.quilting-warehouse.com/091817.html

The rear speakers on the Onkyo 790 don't even weigh 4 lbs. Shouldn't be too difficult to keep them in place.

Tulpa

Yeah, any plain jane speaker mounts should hold the rears. You just have to make sure the bolts can fit the keyhole bracket somehow.

Double up on the tape then instead of one row. Use two. That is if the metal L piece won't reach for you. I used sticky tape for the rear speakers on those stands. And it works great since you shouldn't never have to mess with them for adjustments.

In terms of the sound, it does, but sometimes you have to make do with what the room or situation allows. The diagrams that show speakers placed in a 5.1 or 7.1 configuration is the optimal setup, but it's not absolutely critical, unless you have them all bunched together or have the sub in another room or something. You should be okay with surrounds in the corner.

I have the rears mounted on these stands (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5019646), even though the the base on which the speakers sit is small, it works well. As another member mentioned, I also used Industrial Strength Velcro (from Walmart) to hold the speakers on the stands....and everything works well.

Because of space issues I need to have my front speakers laying on their sides, most of the stands listed here are obviously to small for this application! any suggestions? I have a big floor to ceiling dvd rack where I'll be putting the right front on its side at about 43 inches, unfortunately there is a doorway between my tv and the dvd rack so I cant fit a stand there. On the left side I have room for a stand or a mounting bracket to mimic the 43 inch on its side if possible! thanks for your input and patience with my first post! :D

Certainly not for the fronts and I would have a real tough time recommending them for the satellites. Those stands are really designed for small cube type speakers, not relatively large ones like on the Onkyo S790.

Speaker stands have part to play in the AV scheme of things above just holding up the speakers off the floor. Rigidity is important as is damping. The stands should resist movement from the speakers or energy, that turns into sound, will be wasted.

I love the price, but try do better than those.

I use the walmart $30 speaker stand to mount the HT S590 rear speakers. The screws are not a good fit, I had put some spacers (read cardboard) in between to make it a tight fit with the screws provided with the mount. I am too lazy to put the picture now. However, with the right screw, it will not be a problem. I am not using the two way tape.
