View Full Version : Countdown to the end of my AVSForum days

I just preordered the new JVC. I'll give myself one month after receipt so I can follow the calibration threads and then I am going to have my wife set a password to blockout avsforum.com. The madness has to end! Way too much time spent reading about which projector is better than which and what the next best thing will be and the difference between ansi and on/off and HDMI 1.3 and HD DVD vs. Bluray and DLP vs SXRD and filmlike vs sharp. I love this forum and it has been a great source of information, but I need my life back. Of course I am exaggerating a little, but I bet most of you know what I mean. :o

edit: Please pm me if there is something I really need to know. :D

I could not agree more. Once I get my JVC and it is tweaked, I am out of here till the next upgrade, atleast a few years. I will still come to avsforum, but just for movie info/reviews.

Last year I bought the H79 for just under six grand. I recently sold it at a huge loss and bought a Pearl. Now I'm reading hype about the JVC that will supposedly outdate my two day old Pearl. I'm sure a new mid priced sony will come out next year and do the same to the JVC. It's never ending. It's amazing that many Qualia and Ruby owners are already passing on their projectors after relatively large investments. I've read that the average lifespan of an AVSer is less than most African countries due to the stress.

Jason,

Remember you can still surf the posts without a password, just not respond to posts.

A better way to prevent you from coming to the site might be to remove the A & V key from your keyboard?

I'm thinking she can put some sort of parental guard on it. Of course she'll have to do it for all the browsers then take over the administer account on the computer so I can't uninstall and then reinstall the browser. She also might want to lock the computer in her desk and throw away the key. But then she'll have to throw away the fireaxe.

I hear you I spend WAY too much time reading about all these projectors. I have had my heart set on a Pearl til now the JVC but I still do not think I want to wait til Feb.

What happened to good old will power? I read the forums pretty much everyday and have resisted upgrading my 4 year old Panny AE300. Then again, spending the last 2+ years in graduate school has probably helped a little too :D

I'll have to admit... the new JVC has me seriously tempted. I just need to figure out how to cut a hole through the wall in my apartment to accommodate the throw. Well, I know how, I just need to figure out how to do it so my management company doesn't know!

I know exactly what you mean. Before moving a month ago I was perfectly happy with my old CRT. It cannot be mounted in the new house (WAF issues etc) so I went to AVSForum to look for alternatives. Lo and behold! 1080p cheap digital projectors had arrived in the form of the Mitsu HC5000. I almost ordered one, but had to make a sanity check - what else could I get in the market?

Then I read about the Pearl and saw a demo of it. Looks great with HD, but it is a bit expensive. Can I spend the money now?

Got me back on the CRT track... I love CRT, and there are some really great projectors out there (G90, Cine9 etc). Should I stay on CRT and use a flower/diamond combo to raise WAF?

JVC announcement made me rethink - 10000:1 contrast sounds great, and I might just have to wait till February.

Today at work I read an article on laser projectors that might hit the market late 2007 with almost unlimited resolution, great colour space, outstanding contrast and low price!

That leaves me stuck in good ole November 2006 with my not installed CRT...

Sigh :)

The madness has to end! You've got that right! We've got people here thinking of selling their Pearls to get the JVC. I have to admit I consider myself among them. Well, it'd have to be a pretty incredible pj to give in to such madness, not to mention the financial aspect. Maybe in a year.... :o

I like spending less and less for very good quality images but the frequency of these expenditures is getting out of hand.

As far as lifespan is concerned, I recommend red wine and dark chocolate - at separate sittings, naturally.

After you pay through the nose a few times you learn to ignore the hype as the mentality is usually just to buy today... after all I just did!

What I like to do is reflect on who said what and when. The most common mistake is to accept value judgements at face value. Don't follow the pack mentality. Abstinence maybe is the best method after all:)
That being said that JVC sure looks nice...

Maybe try setting a technology / price barrier to your upgrades. For example:

1) I will not upgrade until laser or LED projectors are available.
2) I will not upgrade until 1080p falls below $3,000 MSRP.

Things along these lines can help. Other than that, therapy is always an option. ;)

Now that I have the Pearl. I'm going to hold of for a few years. I can't imagine anything else in the price range being more than 10% improved in overall PQ. Well, maybe a 3 chip DLP fpr under $5k but I'm not holding my breath.

The JVC sounds like a phenomenal projector, but the march of progress cannot be denied.

So the JVC uses no iris and gets (for argument sake) a 15000:1 on/off contrast ratio. While that is awesome, imagine how well it would do with an adjustable iris. If it can really do something in the neighborhood of of 700+ lumens calibrated at 15000:1, I would gladly trade some of that brightness for more contrast.

The next logical step is what would its "contrast" be with a Pearl class dynamic iris? (I use the quotes because I dont think DI contrasts are directly comparable to non DI/AI contrasts.)

I speculate that if this was a Sony pj with this panel, we'd be looking a claimed 50,000:1 contrast.

Bottom line - not reading this forum after you get your dream pj is not a bad idea.

I know what you mean.

I am in the middle of building myself a new house with a HT room.

Since last year I have decided on ( but not bought ) a;

1) Infocus entry level ~ around $3,500
2) An Infocus for around $7,000
3) A Marantz for around $14,000
4) A Ruby for around $10,000
5) A Sim2 C3X for $20,000+ (it did have a SMOKING good picture)
6) Back to the Ruby
7) And now I would probably get a Pearl.
8) Who knows what I will get by the end of next year when I am done with the house!

This forum (and Jason) just saved me a couple of thousand dollars on the drop down screen.

But Once I get whatever set up installed, I will set a minimum date of 2 years before any upgrade, hopefully longer! (maybe sooner!!!) AGHHHHHHHHHH!

Eric.

If the JVC is released in February, figure they become widely available in March.

At that point its only 6 more months to CEDIA........

I hear you man..... A couple of months ago I was P**ssed when I missed a C3X on Ebay for about $12k, six months later I was relieved.

Now I cant imagine spending more than $5,000 (probably less) on a PJ
