View Full Version : HDMI not working on PS3!
Fettastic 11-16-06, 11:46 AM First off, it probably only affects SOME setups, but still this is pretty disturbing:
"HDMI, Why Oh Why?
New hardware launches are susceptible to technical glitches -- especially gaming and/or video playback machines. Remember overheating Xbox 360’s last November that left some gamers frantically calling Microsoft technical support? Or how about the Toshiba first generation HD-A1 HD-DVD player that refused to detect a video device via HDMI unless the device was turned on and locked into the correct input? And now we have the Playstation 3 that like Toshiba’s HD-DVD player, appears to suffer from some HDMI handshake issues.
My initial PS3 boot-up with HDMI resulted in the screen flickering on and off at approximately three-second intervals. Multiple failed retries gave me fits so I shut the machine down, plugged in the S-Video cable and started from scratch again. This time I got a steady picture, but in no way can 480i compete with 1080p so I quickly switched back to HDMI to once again immediately be welcomed by the annoying screen flickering.
One more reboot finally stabilized the image and after adjusting the screen resolution in the system settings menu, at long last a crisp 1080p menu with the now signature Sony wave was in full motion. Thinking I was out the woods, I popped in Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s ‘Ice Age: The Meltdown’ to take the Blu-ray Drive for a spin. And once again the now increasingly irritating screen flickering hijacked the image and left me scrambling to switch HDMI cables and reboot the console and the TV. Sometimes the flickering stopped after a couple minutes with no tinkering by me, and other times it seemed content to annoy me indefinitely.
I wish I could say I found a definitive solution to the HDMI handshake issue with my Westinghouse 1080p set, but alas, I have not - yet. There will be more time to tweak and test in the coming days, but at the same time I fear a portion of the overjoyed soon-to-be Playstation 3 owners might be in for a shock when after forking out over $500 for the console plus another upwards of $100 for an HDMI cable yields a glitch that requires trial, error and patience to overcome. My fingers are crossed this handshake issue only affects a small segment of the Playstation 3s out at launch, and Sony steps up the plate and addresses it in the next firmware upgrade sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I’ll be asking Santa for a PS3 component cable in my stocking."

HorrorScope 11-16-06, 11:52 AM HDMI should be renamed to PITA
FrankJ.Cone 11-16-06, 11:56 AM HDMI is the tool of the content providers. It is not designed to make our lives better.
Daekwan 11-16-06, 12:03 PM Supposedly its some trick.. like plug the cable in both units.. turn on the tv first.. then hold the power button down on the PS3 for 5 seconds it will autosync..
That said.. I've only tried HDMI connection once on my 720P Plasma.. and it was so much of headache getting it to work consistently that I just went back to component.. which I've never had a problem with.. My tv still has two empty HDMI ports that will only be used if they are the last ones left.
Does the PS3 use HDCP over HDMI for games?

Zero issues for him w/ HDMI
I had a HDMI connection issue between my first HDTV and the cable box... Changed the cable for a better one and that solved the problem.

As the author of the TMR article, what I experienced yesterday was certaintly not hogwash. It is probably an issue with the particular display I was using (Westy 47" 1080p) with the PS3, and was not an issue with IGN's display. I didn't say HDMI wouldn't work across the board... but it is certainly giving me fits.

I was referring to your stating that it might be an issue with some launch consoles and not your Westy like you mentioned.
mboojigga 11-16-06, 12:43 PM Did Bill and MS expect this to happen when they made the decision to not include HDMI? I wonder
Daekwan 11-16-06, 01:57 PM Mboo..
I think MS just saw it as a cheaper solution.. and that most HDTV sold so far have component and/or VGA.. so as far as supporting HDTV gaming.. component was a definite..
HDMI is fairly new to HDTV so they probably didnt there was much demand to support it.. and they could save a few bucks by not including it..
In case you forgot.. until 2 months ago HDMI wasnt even INCLUDED on the $500 PS3.. Sony just recently realized demand for it was increasing

No, it was for different reasons according to MS PR.
Ishmael198 11-16-06, 02:31 PM Hogwash.
If it happens to more than one person, is it still hogwash?
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/archives/ps3-hdmi-problem-fix-new-problem.php
Honestly, seeing one counterexample is only enough to say "hogwash!" if the original claim stated that all launch PS3s had the issue. There is not enough data for anyone here to say that this is not a problem with some consoles.
metsallica 11-16-06, 04:58 PM After lurking these forums for so many years, this is going to feel a little strange... but here goes. I'm having the exact same issue with a LVM-47w1. Makes me wonder if it's an issue with the PS3 or the TV. I haven't yet upgraded to the latest firmware nor tried the "power button" trick, but I will do so momentarily and post on my results.
SC0TLANDF0REVER 11-16-06, 05:50 PM Does the PS3 use HDCP over HDMI for games?
Nope. Just Movies :)
metsallica 11-16-06, 10:45 PM Firmware was upgraded and "power button" trick tried... no luck. Same issue. Anyone have any ideas?

I thought the HDMI cable was missing from both the $500 and $600 PS3.
Doctor Krypton 11-16-06, 10:55 PM Maybe it's the TV's that are the problem not the PS3. Let's hope there are no Directivo like HDMI problems that was a disaster.
metsallica 11-16-06, 11:13 PM It only happens during transitional times; steady gameplay causes no problem once you can get the HDMI to stop flickering. Seems it is the TV, but it's something Sony could fix by sending a consistent stream of data over HDMI -- the console and TV noticeably "jump" when you go back to the XMB interface, into games, and through other menus.
Guess it's back to component for me.
Nope. Just Movies :)
Can you confirm this?? Cause the ps3 manual mentions differently!!

What I said was only meant as a wonder into addition to what they have went on record with saying about sticking with component. I have kept up with every just like all of you.

D was talking about the input not the cable itself. It was announced a couple of months ago in Japan that they will now include the HDMI input on the $500 PS3. Same time when they announced the price drop for Japan.

phantomhitman 11-17-06, 10:23 AM this is just stupid but thanks for the warning.
If anyone owns a sony xbr2 please let me know if the ps3 is having issues with it.
MastaMind 11-17-06, 11:30 AM For the Westy owners, perhaps a HDMI to DVI cable or converter would help. I know that the connections wouldn't be as "clean" in the sense that you might have to have an additional audio cable sent to your receiver, but it might fix the video issues.

Sounds like more work then needed really
I have a similar issue, my screen will go blank for a long period then come back on randomly. It goes blank for over 2 minutes, if I wait long enough it then comes back.
This is from the XMB, I'm not sure if it's the TV (SONY XRD 60) or the PS3. I'm not sure if the TV turns off the input if it doesn't get anythign sent or what.
But it is getting annoying.
Speng.
phantomhitman 11-17-06, 12:49 PM You have got to be kidding me, even Sony tvs are having issues? If I can get my hands on a ps3 and it doesnt work on ym tv I will be pissed beyond belief.
Speng,
Did you update your firmware yet?
i have the sony 50 sxrd.
i was told by both best buy and sony that i should have 1080p through hdmi.
right now i'm not getting it, highest is 720p. very pissed off right now

What model did u get?
I also have a Westinghouse (LVM 42W2).
So far, I have no "handshaking" problems, instead, when using 1080p I have these weird white sparkles around letters and in and around the stream (?) in the background of the XMB. So far, the sparkles are limited to the XMB because the only game I have is Resistance which bumps the monitor down to 720p. 720p has no sparkles in either the XMB or Resistance.
This is the first time I have used HDMI on the monitor, so it could not be a PS3 problem. However, I have used DVI at 1080p with no problems. I'm thinking about getting a HDMI to DVI converter to see if that fixes the problem.
Also, I would test 1080p in Talladega Nights if Sony did not decide to leave it out of my Launch PS3. At least I have the nice sticker to look at on the outside of the box that says it is included....
You have to have it auto-adjust maximum resolution and choose yes. I have 1080P now.
I have updated the latest firmware. The system rebooted and still have the issue. It happened prior to the firmware update and after.
I haven't done a cold-boot yet, that's what I will try next.
But I hope it doesn't happen within a game.

phantomhitman 11-17-06, 01:05 PM I have just read that no one has been able to get 1080p over hmdi yet. This is a major Sony screwup. If it turns out that my tv, the xbr2, the same one they demoed all their demos on, does not work I cannot express my magnitude of hate.
Further more, the people that sync their tvs using the 5 second feature also say that if you want to use the optical out for sound then it resets the signal back to where you cannot get an image anymore. This is a lose-lose situation.

Where can I find this? I'd be curious to read it myself.
phantomhitman 11-17-06, 01:19 PM This thread and every link in it. No one get the video to work along with the audio.
Somehow if syncing the hdmi port then the audio has to switched from hmdi to optical (unless you have a receiver capable of 1080p video and decoding the hdmi audio). When they switch to optical it then screws up the video again.
I am curious to see if anyone has a nice hdmi/1080p capable receiver and is still having issues. The sammys are displaying "sparkling" using 1080p but 720p. Most other people are getting flickering and random image loss using 1080p and hmdi.
I have the 40 inch XBR2 LCD and everything seems to be working fine. Ridge Racer 7 looks scary-good in 1080p and no handshake issues with HDMI.
MastaMind 11-17-06, 01:55 PM Sounds like more work then needed really
Nah, it's not that difficult. HDMI to DVI cable to the TV for video and an optical cable to the receiver. This is the way I will have my PS3 hooked up since my Westy 32w1 doesn't have HDMI.
a7las, please report back with your results if you do attempt the HDMI to DVI connection. :)
I have the ps3 here at the office and had a hdmi to dvi cable in the car so I plugged it up but get nothing. The display senses something (doesn't go to sleep) but doesn't diplay anything.

I can say emphatically that PS3 was able to output 1080p over HDMI.
I was able to feed 1080p over HDMI just fine to my Anthem AVm-50 receiver. It in turn feeds 1080i to my Hitachi rear projection over DVI. I was also able to switch resolutions to 1080i and 720p and 480p. I could not get 480i over HDMI.
When I picked Automatic I am pretty sure it automatically negotiated 1080p with the receiver. I know the display on the receiver switched to 1080p.
I also was able to test the PS3 against a Vizio 32" LCD over HDMI and it worked just fine. Again was able to get 1080i/720P with 2 channel audio.
I would not be so quick to blame Sony for HDMI issues, the implementations are buggy all around. I know Anthem has issued several fixes for HDMI.

Sony SDM X82 TFT LCD for the computer at the office; Probably about three years old. It would be nice if it worked but I guess I'm not surprised.
Sofdec7 11-17-06, 03:35 PM i have the kds-r50xbr1
I have the same one - if I recally correctly, it doesnt accept 1080p (only upscales to it). I dont have my PS3 yet, but 1080i doesnt work on it?!

Hey, what Version firmware of the set do you have? This is related to the sparkles on PC @ 1080p 60hz if I'm correct? If so maybe the new 1.00 version fixes this issue.
Apollo 13 11-17-06, 10:05 PM no HDMI problems with my Sharp 42in 1080P HDTV. I also did a firmware upgrade on my PS3.
isaidme 11-17-06, 10:16 PM "i have the sony 50 sxrd."
You have alot better TV then mine, I have the Sony KDF-42E LCD and have had no problems! My movies are running at 1080i and the one and only game I bought
Resistance FOM is running at 720p but it is only a 720p game to start with. I did install
the update before doing anything though. You should be getting 1080i at least.
SaintsMan 11-17-06, 10:54 PM I got a HDMI to HDMI Cable today. I tried to change the cable on the PS3, the screen goes black and comes back still in 480i. What do I do? Help!
I running my PS3 in 1080p over hdmi and have had 0 issues with game or movie playback. I don't think its a coincidence that everyone with this problem has a westinghouse lcd. I'd be surprised if any Sharp or Sammy's are having this problem. Sorry dude but you get what you pay for.
SaintsMan 11-17-06, 11:16 PM I have a Sony KDL-32S2010
I hooked up the cable, what do I do now
isaidme 11-17-06, 11:16 PM Piss off Rob, No one asked you what you thought they asked for info. SaintsMan you have to use your composite cables first. Then go in and tell it to use HDMI in Video Options. You will be asked what your max resolution is that your TV can handle. Then switch your TV or if you have it hooked up to receiver to its HDMI input. If you have a signal though your HDMI input then disconnect your composite cables.
NewOrlnsDukie 11-17-06, 11:19 PM not a single problem w/ my 42-inch Westy here...

I don't see Video Setting, Display Settings? I went there, pressed the HDMI cable, screen went black and came back still in 480i. I didn't ask me my max resolution?

Cyber Chulo 11-18-06, 05:58 AM I took a while to get HDMI working on my Samsung 4696. Then I tried the motorstorm demo. Switched to 1280x720. Exited the demo. Black screen. I had to switch video inputs on the tv to get the HDMI signal to come through again. Sticking with component on 1080P for now. Luckily the sammy plays the blu-ray movies at 1080P as well through Component. Sony better fix this. I demand the best from my investment.
Cyber Chulo 11-18-06, 10:13 AM What I would suggest is that you guys call sony like I have and just report this issue. If they get enough calls, they'll hopefully do something about it.
I took a while to get HDMI working on my Samsung 4696. Then I tried the motorstorm demo.
That's strange, I had no issues at all; plugged it in, went through the initial setup and that was it.

NBA Demo
actually all of the demos and a few trailers... no issues.

Same here. No problems going from HDMI to DVI.
Markolc81 11-18-06, 04:01 PM I'm definitely having a synchronization problem over HDMI with a Westinghouse 42" set. The screen flickers until it decides to stop, and it does that for every resolution change. once it stabilizes, it will be stabile until a resolution change or input change on my TV.
That's because you bought a Westinghouse.
phantomhitman 11-18-06, 04:52 PM That's because you bought a Westinghouse.
Why is this needed?
Markolc81 11-18-06, 05:15 PM I hope there is a fix out there for this. I know it won't happen soon but after the holidays with some more firmware updates would be nice. Meanwhile 1080p over component is working fine, it's only slightly fuzzy around crisp text, but during gaming you'd be hardpressed to notice a difference.
wxkid23 11-18-06, 09:26 PM I have the 60" XBR2. I don't have a PS3 yet but will be purchasing one in the future. Is 1080p via HDMI really screwed up? Certainly Sony should provide a fix for this.. it's absurd if a $4000 TV from Sony itself woulden't display the PS3 at 1080p via HDMI.
Halfpipetrick 11-19-06, 04:05 AM I have a 50" Fujitsu and the PS3 I just got (60gig) is not working at all it via HDMI - I have connected via component - it's only connecting at 480p and ony in B&W...any suggestions??

Andy_PHA 11-19-06, 12:42 PM this is what discourages me from visiting sites like this. There is this huge thread of people bashing the ps3 because it doesn't work making people all paranoid and not wanting to get the unit. The problem is that TV makers are marketing TV's as the latest and greatest 1080P. The problem is most of them don't accept the freaking signal because guess what 99% of consumers didn't have any 1080P material to feed it. Well guess what now that it's out there you're going to find that your 1080P TV isn't all you thought it was. Set the ps3 to 720P and see what happens. The problem here is that people just aren't up to speed on how all the stuff works, but instead of taking the time to figure it out they would rather come on here and say the Sony screwed us all over.
rantanamo 11-19-06, 01:50 PM I'd say if anything, this is the one place where you can actually get a lot on non-fanboy opinions. You just have to self filter that for yourself.
re this forum:
These people know their stuff, but don't represent the mainstream. They actually have 1080p sets. If the PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii are not living up to their promises, you're likely going to not find sugar-coated opinions. A lot of people don't like that.

It looks great when it works. I think the connection for the HDMI is slipping out on the back of my PS3 that's causing loss of input. So when it happens I just remove and replug in and it works fine.
So, its working.

julian7879 11-19-06, 03:04 PM Same here. No problems going from HDMI to DVI.
How long did it take until you got an image to display? I enabled the HDMI output and get nothing but a black screen.

I am having the exact same issue with my 42" Westinghouse. HDMI-->HDMI goes through all sorts of gyrations before a picture is diplayed (only on 1080p). Others have suggested an HDMI--> DVI cable, which I am using now. The gyrations (flickering, static, etc for 5-10 seconds) has stopped, but unfortunately so has the display. Often times I just get a single thin line across my display after switching from, say a game to the main menu. It just sits there, displays nothing. I have to switch the LCD from DVI to, say, AV, and then back to DVI. Even then it's not a 100% gaurantee that the picture will display.
Also, I have horrible sparkles with HDMI--> HDMI connection. Blacks look bad as well (lots of blue dots). Haven't noticed any issues with HDMI--> DVI, however (when the display actually is viewable).
Not sure what the problem is here...
