Picked up a 60 gig at wal mart. I have never owned a game before well at least not the latest gens we had NES and Sega, always used PC. So I rented Madden 07 to see how it look compared to my PC version on my Panny 50inc LCD. PS3 madden looked worse not as detail. Then put in NBA 07 and it was like night and day better. So I guess its a game to game thing now, I have seen Maden on my friends 360 and it rates right with my PC version in looks to me. So I am really on the fence here. I dont think I will be getting many blu ray discs in the near future so games wold be the big use right now. So far I am a little underwelmed, but I will give it some time.

Also it seems I cant get out of the games to go back to the PS menu am I missing something? I would just reboot it.

hold the PS symbol down on the remote for a few seconds. Should ask U if you want to quit the game.

so, dumbass newbie question time... I can put CDs in here and rip them to the drive like on a PC...? As mp3's...? Thanks! d
I'm stuck at work so I can't play with it as much as I'd like!

One question about resolutions. My TV does 480p 720p 1080i. I went into the PS3 menu and told it that it did, so how do I know for sure what rez the game is playing in?

Sorry to hear of your sitch, board jay. I hear ya about most stuff but if you can't see the difference between upconverted Sd and a BD disc at 1080i honestly it might be calibration time for that big old Mits! I had a 55908 Diamond and until I really got in there and manually focused the lenses and then did an electrostatic focus and did ALOT of tweaks the set didn't shine and didn't show the PQ of a source nearly as well as it could The Mits. CRT sets almost never come out of the factory as good as they could be. To really see all the added detail in the BD pic. you really need to have all 3 guns focused as tight as possible.
We watched Kingdom Of Heaven on BD last nite and the difference from SD dvd was not subtle at all, it was an incredible leap in PQ...We have comcast cable HD and that looks damn good but this even blew that out of the water. What BD disc did you look at? By all accounts the freebie "Talladega" is very mediocre

speco, if you checked 720P then the games should be indeed running at 720P. Until I did that it downrezzed to 480P.

:)

Gotcha Board Jay. I agree that the 720P games defaulting to 480P is lame and needs to be addressed, hopefully in a firmware. My New PJ is native 720P and accepts the BD disc signal at 1080i and displays it very well and runs the games in native 720P.
While I don't think it's perfect I think the machine is pretty decent and a good value for the dough. I got the 20gb version and no tax from amazon so for me it's great. I was heavily leaning towards HD-dvd but I gotta admit that the really, really small list of announced titles for the next few months spooked me. Supposedly BD now has a 3-1 difference on announced titles. Please nobody flame me but that's just how I looked at it. I don't care who wins, I just wanna watch HD movies and as of now BD seems to have the moementum. Will it last? I don't know. Will it crash and burn? Maybe. But I will have fun while it lasts.
Also, I believe the PS3 remote is now out at gamestop and people report it's like $25.
The controller for me works surprisingly well.

Good luck with what you decide! Happy holidays! dave

I'll try to be brief:

Top 3 Pros:

* Excellent core gaming experience due to High Definition graphics, excellent controller, and backward compatibility.
* Impressive package of audio and video functionality, including Blue-Ray and HDMI 1.3.
* Free centralized online source for updates, downloads, and online gaming with genuinely good playability.

Top 3 Cons:

* Disappointing out-of-box issues, such as flaky WiFi compatibility and sub-optimal resolution support.
* Sub-par packaging: bulky, heavy, and runs hot.
* Few launch titles, even fewer that are worth buying to keep.

(2) Browser SUCKs. No matter what, it won't display on the whole TV like my laptop widescreen display, it does a 4:3 center display. And no, not that my TV settings were wrong or that I didn't set it up right in the PS3 - I did. So that is bogus.
This is actually incorrect. The PS3 can actually display the browser window full screen. It's in the browser options menu or by pressing the R3 (right analog nub in). Hope that helps you with one of your many concerns with the PS3. Unless you already returned it. :)

Actually, board jay is correct. I have a Sony 50in. GW3 and when I hit the R3, the browser gets put far left with several inches of underscan, cutting off several inches of the browser. I can center it and not go full widescreen but then it has major overscan left and right.
I have an HTPC and it is 3 years old. The Ati card I have in it enables me to go full wide screen with less than a 1/4 inch overscan on the sides and top, and none on the bottom. The PS3 will not do that.

eclipz
12-26-06, 03:09 AM
I guess it depends on the type of tv you have and how much overscan the display is set at. I have Toshiba 57HX83 (2003 RPTV). When my PS2 was set up, I had set the overscan to a bit more to compensate for the PS2. When I set up my PS3 for the first time and went into the PS Store I noticed that a lot of the text around the edges was being cut off. I then went in and adjusted the overscan on the TV to bring everything in again. Even after that the web pages I've viewed seem fine at fullscreen.

Also board jay mentioned 4:3 center display. I don't think he was talking about a bit of underscan. Although I could be mistaken.

Although, the web browser in a nice add on, it's no permanent replacement for a PC. Especially when I have a computer sitting 10 feet away.

I am played resistance fall of man for hours with no issues. I have left my PS3 on for hours downloading all of the demos.

No crashes, and my PS3 is super quiet!

I have played a bluray movie...my PS3 is still quiet..and just warm to the touch.

I have mine laying flat with ample ventilation on the sides and top. Connected with HDMI. Firmware 1.32

It is only warm to the touch, with no fan noise. I guess I have a good unit. Mine was one of the first ones. I got it on release day..but did not open it up till last sunday.

Internet speed is fast. Download Speed is super fast! I have it connected wireless to my DI-784 router.

I got a logitech MX-5000 bluetooth 2.0 Keyboard\Mouse.

I just plug in the USB Bluetooth dongle and synced it up with the keyboard and mouse and it worked flawlessly.

When you set up the PS3 network for the first time...it will say that it can not connect to the internet, and that you have to update to firmware 1.32...all you have to say is yes and it will connect and download firmware 1.32 and then you will be able to connect to the Playstation Store and the internet.

I have my wireless router set up with static IP with the Mac address for the PS3.
Everything works.

GTHD is totally awesome!

Motorstorm demo is totally awesome!

The PS3 is awesome!

I just added a PS3 to my stable. It now sits vertical next to my 40 in. Sony LCD HDTV, and the 36o sits horizontal on a shelf below. The PS3 is the coolest looking peice of hardware I have ever laid eyes on! It is substantial to the feel yet sleek to the eye. The curve of the machine and the piano black finish is flawless.

I am so excited that now I won't miss any exclusive next gen titles AND I have Blu Ray Disc capability. I ordered 6 BR discs from Buy.com and saved $20 each checkout over $50. Just did 3 seperate orders and ended paying liek 15 bucks per movie.

The setup was a breeze. I have the 60 Gig, and I was relieved and impressed an how simple and slick the OS is. I got online in no time without a hitch.

Resistance FOM is impressive( and an outstanding launch offering). The game runs smooter than butter with no screen tearing and awesome effects (smoke, glass, explosions). It looks really sharp on my 720p panel.

I love this thing. The best Xmas ever.

I basically bout the PS3 as an investment in the future. I see a long shelf life for this rig, (for gaming and Blu Ray!). I have no interest in any other games out now (all putrid rushed ports ), but am DL'ing the Motostorm demo now. That is my next game.

Then I want Killzone, Warhawk, and MSG4! :)

I can highly reccomend this peice of technological wizardy so far. I am a launch day devotee (1-22 06) to the 360 (kripes, look at my loggin name), and am no Sony fanboy. Thing is rock solid, and silent!

Games are thin for now, but I have GOW and R6 Vegas on the 360 and RFOM on the PS3 to tide me over. Plus my wife is three days past her due date, so Three games on two consoles and six BR movies is plenty!

I will post more impressions after Motostorm.

So far things I love: BR disc playback
Potential of the Cell
HDMI :D
Card readers and 4 usb ports :D
Super quiet
awesome OS

Just got the PS3 today and my experience has been pretty good. The Interface is easy to navigate through, though I still like the 360 style more. I'm hoping they release a update later to allow you do play a game while downloading cus waiting is boring...

My PS3 is really quiet though. :)

Got my ps3 its great and Loud;noisy I can hear it over my 5 fans computer system.

The hdmi to dvi looks great too bad most of the demo is 720p and the trailer aren't 1080p in their original mode.

My yellow dog linux 5.0 gives me read error on the install at 80% during installation.

Genji looks great, Resistance is hard to play with controller it needs usb mouse and keyboard.

Hdmi to hdmi, hdmi to dvi2 don't work on my lvm-42w2 westy. Where are the 1080p content the a part of the reason I picked up ps3 over a 8800 gtx.

I also waited for the PS3 as my next gen Console. So what if I am stuck beta-testing hardware untill next year rolls around, but the must have exlcusives will pay off. Not to even mention Oblivion in 1080p :D

Speaking of this thread, and so far on what I read; is that Xbots are sure insecure, and do have to explain ( in detail ) their dedication to M$. Thats fine with me, I favor PS3 over X360 simple as that! So let others do the same ;) We don't need to hear/read about your HD-DVD, or X360 crap.

Simply, if you own a x360, there is no reason to own a PS3 right now, unless you are a hard core PS fan. There are not enough games, but rest assured that next year there will be much more games that wont be out on anything but PS3.

Motorstorm, Liar, Warhawk, Gran Turismo, MGS4, DMC4, should I go on?

:)

So if you ask me, was this upgrade worth it? YOU BET YOUR ASS IT IS! My HDTV loves it! 1080p BD, gaming heaven!

A slight HDMI issue, and issues here and there, but so far everything is getting better and better 1.31 here.

I did install Linux from Red Hat ( Fedora Core ) and waiting for YDL. Love it!

:D

Actually, MGS4 is coming to xbox360. Sony practically begged konami to keep this under wraps, but the news is out( Source: EGM December issue.). I understand that you sony people have to justify that $600, but all crying aside, which is the better one today?? It is sad that Sony is losing all of its exclusives as well. Slowly, but surely. GTA4 will be a simultaneous release with the Xbox having exclusive downloadable content. What is all this talk of Xbox having a year headstart? If anyone had a year head start, it is Sony. They had a year to look directly at the competition and still could not get it right. They could have at least stolen some of Xbox's ideas, but they couldn't even do that. Don't even get me started on that joke of an online network.

Joke of online network? Well I guess if you consider 40 people at once with zero lag zero slowdown. Something I have yet to experience with my live account :o

Sony did borrow some ideas, standard HDD in every system, excellent move :D

I'm a 360 owner and own a PS3 and have played the some games and watched some blu-ray movies. IMO Sony has done an amazing job and delivered a fantastic product, they've covered some things that MS should have done with the 360 but didn't as well. I'm happy to have both :)

Well said. L Tweeter or whatever your name is, troll somewhere else fanbaby. I have and love the 360, and think Live is amazing. But guess what, I am a gamer and AV/HT fan first and foremost, not an insecure fanboy carrying water for someone else.

So, since I enjoy AV/HT/gaming, I bought a PS3. I have never owned a playstation ever before this. Gues what, I actually have spent real time with this Console/Blu Ray Player and have some genuine impressions, not desperate and pathetic attempts to insult another console so "MY" console can hold on to the Oh so important spot of "The number #1 console in the universe!" (so your ego can continue to feel secure about your purchase of 360/lack of purchase of PS3).

And you know what, it's awesome! I Love it! It has absolutely exceeded all my expectations. The only exclusive title (RFOM) is amazing! RFOM online is amazing. The system runs silky smooth, no hiccups, screen tearing, slowdown, or anything. 40 people online lag free! ( I am referring to RFOM, not some crummy rush job of a port).

And The Cross bar interface of the PS3 is actually simpler, sleeker, and very functional. I love it.

So stop comparing a system that is 1 year more mature to a launch lineup of games.

I have see things in RFOM that I have yet to see in a 360 game. A reality check is coming for you.

So go hang out in another forum and root root root for the home team where the crowd will be a little friendlier.

And hey, if you ever get up the nerve to swallow your misguided pride and buy a PS3, I'll frag your a-- in RFOM! :p

P.S. Nothing personal Bro. ;)

Yes, you heard me correctly, JOKE. downloading HD movies and tv shows, friends list, gamertags, achievements, etc.... Zero lag??? I doubt that is consistent. I am all for the PS3 because competition stems new technologies and helps to keep prices down.

Three words: Gears Of War. nuff said.

briankmonkey

Yup, I have Gears of War. It has lag, it has screen tearing, it has framerate issues (and only with 8 people max). Resistance has none of that (with 40 people).

Regardless I really enjoy both games for different reasons ;)

FYI, I have friends list/gamertags on my PS3 as well, and it is free :)

And of course I get to watch 1080p trailers on my PS3 and watch glorious blu-ray movies with lossless sound, something not possible on my 360 due to MS's short-sited mistake of not including HDMI capabilities.

There are 3 things that make the PS3 the better peice of hardware to develop games for:

1) Blu Ray Disc's capacity will allow developers to make games much more deeper and immersive, and just plain save more code on them.

2) The PS3 is the first consumer device with HDMI 1.3 support. Big news for most of us in this forum.

3) Every PS3 has a Harddrive, so developers can utilise it games.

These three things are undisputable, inarguable, very important for how good games will be over the next 5 years, and the 360 will never have them because MS compromised.

The 360 is a powerful and awesome gaming platform, I have one and love it. GOW is amazing. But try to be realistic and fair minded. Don't call the PS3 a peice of junk.

O.K. enough of this talk about 360 vs ps3!! let's talk about first impressions!!
I have the ps3 in a et center sealed in one of the cabinets. Man this thing runs hot when I have the cabinet door closed. I hear the the fan running at max and I know to open the cabinet door-and when I do I feel the heat-It is like 120 degree's. If I keep the door open then ps3 seems pretty quiet-this is with playing bd or gaming. I also notice ticking coming from the unit like the heatsinks are expanding or contracting. I mean when it gets pretty hot!! Anyone else have it in enclosed area and experiencing this clicking when it gets pretty hot? Also the dvd playback both conventional and bd looks great!! The conventional dvd's look really good-does the ps3 have a 12 bit d/a converter for conventional dvd playback?

The best things I like about my PS3 is:

1) RFOM just gets better and better. The single player gets back to basics in FPS with great smooth gameplay and the best weapons in a game in a while. I never get sick of shooting the glass and blowing up those balls that fly all over the place a little different each time. There is so much going on at one time in some of the big wide open battle scenes with no slow down. Also some of the best looking CG cut scene faces ever.

2) Motorstorm Demo.

3) Blu Ray Playback.

4) The interface is awesome and very intuitive. I forget what Sony calls it the Cross Bar or something, but I think it OS excellent.

5) The best looking console ever IMO.

6) The knowledge that when I buy my next 1080p HDMI 1.3 TV my PS3 will support HDMI 1.3!!!!

Negatives: None so far. I know that the online features like chat and friends lists aren't as integrated yet, but thats not a real loss for me. I didn't use those features much. But to someone that did it is a step back for sure.
As far as games, I am busy with RFOM offline and online and all the demos. Plus I have a baby that's now a week overdue, so I'll be busy soon enough.

I can't wair for Motorstorm, MGS4, and other great titles to come out!

Are you intentionaly trying to kill your PS3!?
Anything electronic with this much power will create heat & putting it in an enclosed cabinet recurculating the hot air will kill it in a hurry!

Just trying to break it in quicker!! Just Kidding!
I definitely do not want to kill the ps3. I leave the av cabinet door open whenever I use it- for now!! It has only gotten really hot a couple of times when I happened to leave the door closed by mistake. I am going to try making the opening in the back of the cabinet alot bigger-and maybe add a fan in there so I may be able to close the door when using it. Someone posted in the forums about a 4" fan so I will check into that. I just can't believe the heat this thing generates. I guess this is what heatsinks are for!

Played my first PS3 non-demo game last night, and I was thouroughly dissapointed. I'm a sports gamer and assumed that the reviews that Madden 07 couldn't not be that bad. I was very wrong. Compared to the Ps2 version, I can't believe it's the same title. I have four other games that came along with my bundle, Need for Speed Carbon, Full Auto 2, Project 8 for my son(will be taking back since he has it for PS2, and Fight Night Round 3. I guess I have to keep playing the PS2 Madden for now.

I just got my PS3 Monday, (I play on a REAL crappy TV, which is my next purchase, but thats a different thread which ill ask about later).

Madden is the WORST game to view a PS3 on. Its nothing but a port, and not really designed for the PS3.

I was really impressed with Resistance, and the SIXAXIS controller, the Wireless Internet seemed very stable, the System did run hot, but not overwhelmingly hot.

I cant really gauge the graphics, as my TV is an old old TV using AV inputs, but from my current standpoint, the PS3 is worth every dollar spent.

I just hooked up my PS3 last night, and here are my likes/hates:

Like:

1. It looks kinda cool. I'm liking the ipod-like buttons. Very slick.

2. Blu-Ray is neat. I'll be happy if it takes off. I'll be pissed if it flops.

3. Free online? Kinda.

4. The start up music. Cool orchestra touch.

5. Good d-pad. The xbox one just plain sucks.

1. 600 bucks for this, which has yet to show my 600 bucks worth of fun.

2. The dashboard sucks. Xbox is so intuitive, this is a hassle. It is just like the PSPs, which I hate and have wasted too much time trying to figure out. Multiply the number of options by 10 and you have a mess.

3. No real buddy list, no real friends list...this is a huge negative. There is nothing cooler than knowing what your friends are doing, and seeing if you want to join them. Xbox has the community feel...this just has a sterile, impersonal feel.

4. The store is a mess to navigate. It looks like itunes, but without a mouse it is just unintuitive.

5. Getting online set up was a pain. Why they didn't go the xbox route and give you a keyboard is beyond me.

6. Where are the must have PS3 games? Besides Resistance, the next best thing is a demo. That is seriously bad. When you competition throws Gears Of War at you, you better have something good to respond with.

7. The controller. It is outdated. The 360 just slides and fits perfectly in your hand. This Sixaxis doesn't. FPS games are not as natural or fluid.

8. No rumble. You don't notice how much you liked it until it's gone. Now you actually have to pay attention to the screen to see if you're getting hit, instead of just feeling it.

Overall...I'm dissapointed by my PS3. I'll give it 6 months to get in gear. If it doesn't...then Sony, you have simply failed.

If it wasn't for Metal Gear, then I'd probably abandon my PS3. Give me the great Sony titles that I know and love!

I actually found the dashboard ingeniusly simple and intuitive. The store is the same (tabs across the top for each category) for me.

I also set it up today, I am extremly impress about the noise level. At least now the whole family can have a conversation while the ps3 is on (unlike xbox 360)

Lots of people mention about the input, I don't understand how hard is it to click 3 buttons to enter info. D pad R2 and then start , is bascially the same as my cell phone to enter text.

So far everything seem good , download grand turismo in 30 minutes.

I like it. Good machine

Have a 360, just got a 60gb PS3.
The setup was a bit tedious. I don't have any ethernet capabilities in my media room, only wifi, so entering the 26 digit hex key was a bit of a pain. Another issue was that it did not past the internet connectivity test right away, even though I had all the IP settings via DHCP. I had to download two updates, first 1.31 (I did this to a pen drive via a laptop), then let the PS3 download 1.32. FINALLY it was passing the internet connectivity test and I was able to go online via WIFI.

I purchased Resistance as my first game. I only got to play for about 15 minutes. It's OK so far, but definitely not nearly as good as Gears of War. Not the gameplay or the graphics. I am not worried about the gaming because the system just came out. As far as the Blue Ray player goes, I rented Taladega nights. It looks pretty nice and sounds great, although I cannot get Dolby Digital via PCM output (uncompressed), only via the 640k compressed encoding. No biggie, I'm sure I'll find a reason for this.

Overall it's quiet, looks fantastic, the disc loading is great.
I don't like the fact that there is a master on/off switch and I can't power the console fully on from the remote. Also, it doesn't seem like the controller charges when the unit is off. Very lame.

SO far I give it a B-

PS3's standby mode is "off" for most devices. The intention is to only use the master switch in the back if you aren't going to use the unit for a couple weeks or go on vacation.

DaverJ,

Thanks a million for that piece of info. I always wonder that about my old PS2 as well. So if I leave the unit in standby mode with the controller plugged into the USB port, does the controller charge? Also, if the controller is not plugged in, can I start the unit from the controller like I can with the 360?

Alas, no. I wish it did... but you can charge the controllers via a powered PC hub or many digital cable boxes that have USB ports.

Also, if the controller is not plugged in, can I start the unit from the controller like I can with the 360?

Yep... push the PS button in the middle of the controller. If you push and hold the PS button while the console is on you get the option to turn off the controller or the system.

The PS3 outputs various resolutions based on what it is doing. Blu-ray movies output 1080p to TVs that accept that input, like yours. However, some games are designed for 1080p and some 720p... the PS3 will output whatever resolution the game was designed for. Madden is designed for 720p.

FWIW, standard DVDs and PS1/2 games output at 480p.

I find it funny that all the xbox fanboys claim gears is the best game in the world and that it is the end all game for the xbox-ps3 battle. They claim Gears is much better than RFOM.

Well, the graphics may be better, but it took a whole year for anyone to put out a decent FPS on the 360. RFOM was a launch title, all I have to say is give PS3 game makers one year and see what happens.

BTW I dld Gran Turismo HD and it is the best looking game I have ever seen.

I love my PS3/....and xbox360

I have both so I am no fanboy, just stating the facts. I also do believe the games for PS3 will get much much better. One thing I like about GOW over Resistance it that its not really a fps, yet a third person shooter. I like seeing my character and not just the crosshairs of a gun. I also feel GOW looks much more three dimentional. Another thing I don't like about Resistance is that you have to pass an entire level before you are able to save, and you have to rely on stupid health packs. I think that is an antiquated system. GOW's health retrieval system is much better (or easier). Now I'm not saying I don't like the PS3 because of that since that is all about the game, I'm just saying how RFOM is not in the same league as GOW IMO. Let's give the PS3 a year to see what they can come up with.

well, i had my doubts about PS3...had a launch console that i attempted to sell with no luck due to the high ratio of people getting/selling.

I finally opened it up today shocked the system was good. I was not impressed with the games that were released. However, the Playstation store had some goodies to download.
While slow, its a simple layout. My TV is a little crazy trying to switch resolutions all the time (one thing i don't like).

overall, good system. well enjoy it. BD movie (taledga) looked ook. I can see the difference but then again, its 1080i. I still havn't brought into the 1080p techonlogy

I finally picked up resistance,,(trade-in for cod3/xbox360) and boy am I pleased...this game is pure fun..the graphics don't really kick you in the head, but there are instances of brilliance...ie. rolling fog, the depth of the city scapes. Other than GOW's online experience, I was bored of the campaign. r:fom fit the bill. This is a really good game. Now if I can only get my bluetooth headset to sync I will get with the online portion. But yeah, related to the thread, I purchased my ps3 on dec 29th and have been pleased. Definitely great games to come.

I recieved my Playstation 3 from my fiancee on Christmas (just confirms why I am marrying her). AT first my expiernce was not postive, the slot loading disc player did not accept discs, and I just recieved the replacement a few days ago. But now that I have had time to play around with it, here are my impressions.

For reference I have a sony 42" KDF-E42A10 hooked up to the ps3 via hdmi running at 720p, and I have a older Onkyo SR-600 Reciever hooked through opticcals, and bose speakers. I also have a Xbox 360 with HDDVD addon.

Out of the box I like it. I was very pleasently surprised by the heff of the unit and the build quality. It feels like it is well built. I am not to sure if I like the block glossy finish because it attracts all the dust and fingerprints in the world, but in general it looks... well... sexy.

I am also quite happy with the lack of noise that the unit produces, while still louder than most components I have used in the past, it is by far quiter than the 360. i read a few reports of it not being warm, but I was surpised how much heat it was putting out, much more than the 360. So I moved it from the rack I had it in, and placed it vertical beside the TV.

To summerize these are the things I like
- The build
- The look
- How quite the unit is
- Blu-ray does look very, very good, and I think this justifies having the PS3.

However I was quite dissapointed with the Playstation network, yes I can play online out of the box for free, and free is a nice feature, but I think I have been spoiled by live. The lack of a universal friendlist where I can invite friends into games that I have created is annoying, and is the feature I wish the PS3 had the most.

I am not impressed with the menu system that the ps3 employs, but I think that is more of a personal taste, it does what it sets out to do and is functional.

Really do not like the lack of IR. Sure bluetooth is okay for the controller, but in the end, I have a logitech harmony remote that I have controlling everything else, except the PS3.

My biggest gripe is the controller. Its not so much the lightness or the lack of rumble. Its the lack of swappable batteries. If my 360 controller gets starts running low on juice I just swap it out with a new battery pack. Even with the 460 quick charge kit, I always had the battery pack with double A batteries as a back up in case I did not want to use the annoying cable. With the ps3 you just cant swap out batteries, you must take apart the controller to change batteries and even then I think your suppose to only do that if the battery is bad. The only thing you can do when you are playing is hook up the controller to the ps3 via usb and let it charge.

Overall I am dissapointed. The games at launch were ok, but that is the point they were just okay. I was under the impression that the ps3 was suppose to blow the 360 out of the water, and I am not sure if it even made a ripple. I will use it for a blu-ray player, and I hope that the console will improve over the year along with the games.

I picked up my PS3 recently and here are my impressions:

My son is a big gamer and was looking forward to the PS3 due to all the hype and the fact that none of his friends had procured one. I wanted one for the Blu-Ray first and the games second.

I got my HDMI cables from Monoprice (great company, great experience) and hooked the PS3 to my KDS-R50XBR1. After hookup, I followed the instructions in the manual and set up the wireless internet connection with no issues. Once connected the PS3 prompted me to download the OS update which took all of about a half-hour. I was fully connected to the web and ready to go!

I really could care less which is a better gaming system (PS3, XBox 360 or Wii), but as a consumer home electronics device I think the PS3 if phenomenal. I understand the hard core gamers love to engage in this debate, but given that I can play games in hi-def (Resistance is all I've got so far), watch Blu-Ray DVDs and easily hop on the web to check the menu of the restaurant I want to go to makes it a home run for me. I'm sure once these things are readily available the choice of games will increase and Sony will maintain their dominance in the space, albeit with a slightly smaller market share. Gaming in Dolby Digital is cool too...

It is annoying that you need to purchase a second controller and USB cable, HDMI cable (or two if you use HDMI as your audio connection) which brings the purchase price to nearly $700 for the 60GB model, but I would have bought the game system and a Blu-Ray device at some point anyway, and this makes my rack less cluttered. I was going to hook up a PC to my TV for internet access and the PS3 solved that problem. I am going to pick up a wireless keyboard and mouse to make browsing the web easier...

Overall I'm very pleased and looking forward to years of enjoyment!

Good thoughts gdfan, nice to read a serious HT/non-serious gamer's opinions.

FWIW, it's been a long time since a console came with more than 1 controller.

I have decided to be a little more opened minded about my PS3. I may be biased against it for one reason or another which in turn could be a little unfair. Although my first impression was only based on one video game and one other thing. There are no gamer points to be earned. I really didn't take notice of how hooked on gamer points I have become until tonight while playing Tiger Woods 07 on PS2 at a friends. I didn't want to touch the game when I discovered there were no points to be earned towards my overall gamer score. That is just something very silly but I hadn't noticed it until tonight. So I have to play my games more often before I state my opinion. I don't want to be considered a fanboy so I offer my apologies to those who have read any of my impressions before now and ask you all to take those opinions with a grain of salt. I hope my apologies have been accepted and I hope you all enjoy a good gamers night! Good day to you all!

I just got my PS3 last monday. Hardwarewise, it is just one sexy machine. Best looking console I've ever owned. PS2 looked like ass (but I never owned it), Xbox (owned) wasn't too bad and with skins could look decent, and the 360 once again looks like ass.(don't own)

I bought it mainly for Blu-ray playback, and with that it truely succeeds. Haven't had any problems with picture quality or playback and the console is dead silent. I got the $20gig version.

I'm also very pleased that the PS3 can playback raw HDV files shot with my Canon XL-H1. They look great on it. All my companies HD shortfilms are saved on the harddrive and play at full 25Mbps. I do wish Sony would increase the types of files it does play though. Basic wmv support would be nice.

The PS Store and web browsing need work. They are functional but lots of improvement can be had, especially with the browser before it is something I can use everyday.

Lots of tweaks and customizations for the XMB are needed but overall it works very well. It is more like 'additional features' vs something actually being wrong with it.

Now gaming.
I haven't purchased any games and most likely won't unless they are must haves with lots of replayability. So I'm only renting through gamefly.com. I spent way too much money on the xbox only to play through a game once and forget it. I also have a 1080i only tv that won't accept 720p. So until Sony fixes their scaling, or lack there of, issue any titles I do purchase will be 1080p since they play at 1080i just fine.

Now I've always hated the PS controller. It just never felt right. I loved the original Duke on the xbox and then they scred that up by making the small controller standard. Never cared for the rumble feature in controllers either. I have buttkickers bolted to the couch, so there is no need for cheap plastic rattling in my hands. I'm getting used to the sixaxis and while it is still not my favorite it will work. I love the motion sensing more than I thought I would. When games fully support it and take advantage it is going to be great. Lair is going to rock with this controller. I haven't had any problems with the bluetooth connectivity either.

Besides all the demos available on the PS Store, I have RFoM currently. On my set it only renders out at 480p, but it still looks pretty darn good. (gritting teeth at the 720p/1080i issue again)
The sound on this game is amazing though.

Overall I'm quite satisfied just because of the Blu-ray playback. Sony really needs to get some killer titles out though and from looking at the lineup through June, it looks like there could be a couple. Until then, I'll sift through the crap and not be bothered since I'm not dropping $50-$60 on a title. There are still many items that can be improved upon and it is nice to know that Sony is working on them judging by the updates we have received so far. I do plan on getting a new 1080p tv this year, but that still doesn't excuse Sony for the retarded move of not including proper scaling in the PS3 at launch. That should be numero uno on their list of items to fix.

I got a sneak peak at the 360 a couple months before it launched and it left me unimpressed. Only a couple titles looked good and the system itself seemed rushed and they made some crucial errors such as no standard hard drive. But they have come a long way this past year and I have a feeling the PS3 will be in a similar boat. The hardware is there, and it is a very solid machine overall. Now they just need to finetune the software. I highly recommend the 20gig over the 60gig model unless you must have wireless built-in to keep things clean.

After all the Sony bias hate dies down, I think most people will pick it up and realize that it is a solid gaming platform and a good value for what you are getting. I don't see it surpassing the 360 it total units sold this year, or even next year. But most likely by the 3rd year and after a couple price drops it will be the system to own.

Lastly, the best addicting game on the 360 when it launched was Geometry Wars. With the PS3, it is Blast Factor. Love that game. :D

Madden and Tiger look and play great! The wireless controllers work flawlessly, I am really surprised. Pictures from Sony memory stick from camcorder work well. Wireless internet works well. I was playing a round of golf and I hear ESPN radio and the Saints and Eagles score. I have a PS1 game never played from 3 to 4 years ago and it plays fine.

One question that I have is why on Bluray DVDs like Superman Returns, there is a black bar at the bottom and top when I am using a Sony wide screen XBR2?

Some films are shot wider than 16:9, meaning even on a widescreen set you'll still have black bars

I picked up a 60GB at BB on Wednesday. It was at the tail end of a snow day, so I wasn't in the mood to hunt around for HDMI/DVI cables. I picked up what BB had ($$$ AR Cables). I also picked up Crank on Blu-Ray and Tiger Woods PGA. Their PS3 game and Blu-Ray DVD sections were pretty depleted.

I first hooked it up via my existing PS2 S-Video composite cables into the TV's auxiliary inputs just to get it going. This worked fine except for some buzzing from the RCA audio. That was fixed by switching over to the optical audio output.

Next I hooked up the DVI adapter and the HDMI cable, and after working out some handshaking issues, I got the dashboard working in 1080i on the DVI input. When trying to play a DVD, regular or BD, it would switch into black screen and hang. After power cycling the TV, I could bring up the little DVD control icons, but the PS3 refused to play the DVDs, giving a "operation not available" message. When I switched back to composite mode, it played the DVDs fine, both regular and BD.

My TV is an early HDCP model (JVC 48WP30), so I would expect it to work, but who knows. I downloaded Firmware 1.32, and still couldn't get it to work, so I picked up the PS3 component video cable at Circuit City and had success with that.

I assured myself that the audio buzzing didn't occur if I hooked the RCA audio to my receiver instead of the TV, so I know the PS3 isn't defective in that regard.

All in all, a nice machine, although the learning curve might be a bit steep. This was more like getting a new PC or AV receiver to work, as opposed to just hooking up a DVD or video game player. But it's a keeper, and a great way to get into Blu-Ray in the early stages.

01-26-07, 07:21 PM
Since I am still the last poster, I decided to update that the Firmware 1.5 upgrade did allow Blu-Ray DVDs to play over my HDMI/DVI connection. Regular DVDs still do not. It still requires a lot of powering off/on the TV to get HDMI talking after putting in a BD, and stopping a BD. So it's closer but not soup yet.

Some more impressions after a few weeks of having the system.

The only 'retail' game I've played so far is RFOM. I beat it in about 10 hours I would guess. About average in length for FPS games lately. It was relatively easy on the normal setting. A few tough levels and then boom, the last section was a headache. But even at only 480p (damn you for not including scaling) it looked pretty good. Better than the Halo series to me. For one thing, it never felt like you played the same level twice. Tons of different locals, and the weapons were great. That's the weakest part of Halo, poor weapon variety. But I digress.

So now I have taken it online to test that out. Wow, color me surprised. I was a LIVE beta tester and suffered through the lag and poor matchmaking that LIVE had the first couple years of its existance. I've played quite a few games, as well as hosted numerous games of up to 32 people and it has been smooth as butter. Matchmaking is quick and reliable. Games start right up. Just ordered a bluetooth headset so will see how well that works. LIVE did do well with the communicator. I gotta say, all those people that keep spouting that the PS3 online network sucks, and you can't get anything good for free (even though the best online gaming I've ever had has been on the PC and it has always been free) and they are years behind LIVE, well I don't think they even played.

The PS3 online network might not have all the bells and whistles of LIVE (most I could care less about) but it does exactly what I want it to do. Play my multiplayer games online with little hassle....and for free.

Lynn, wait till you get a headset. Play some Capture the flag, particularly Somerset. The maps are amazing. I am in a clan and it is EXTREMELY addictive. Great online game, possible the best I have ever played as well. Rank games are fun, but prepared to be beaten easily in death match until you get a handle on it and team ranked are better and easier to rank up with.

bought an open box 20GB ps3 for 50$ off; had it for about 3 weeks now and i've had virtually no problems so far. motorstorm and GT:HD are very fun and look amazing. resistance online is fun and the stats are now updated on a regular basis. some levels look mediocre, but most of them look pretty impressive. swapped the HDD with an 80GB seagate SATA 5400rpm HDD and it was very simple to do and the format took literally seconds.

overall, i'm very satisfied with my purchase. i could have waited a little longer but i couldn't pass up a cheaper open box 20GB unit as the 20GB's are impossible to find.

I tried out a game for the first time last night with RFOM demo. Man...it will sure take some time of getting used to compared to a Xbox360.

* Initial Impressions *

Things I didn't like about it are:
- The fact that the controller is small with no rumble. It would have been a totally better experience with it IMO. Heck, it's so light it feels cheap.
- Controller design has changed little from PS2. It looks awkward when beside the sleek PS3 chassis.
- RFOM graphics is so so for me. Hopefully, some PS3 games in the future would use UNREAL ENGINE 3 (Epic - Gears of War).

Things I like about it are:
- Plays BD movies (that's why I bought one).
- Sleek chassis design
- It has TEKKEN and MGS franchise!!!! :D

Bought it online 2 weeks ago, still very hard to find in-store in the OC. Finally, hook it up when the HDMI to DVI cable arrived this past Friday.

Feels a little heavy, but solid, well-built, pretty quiet. Controller very light. Update to 1.51, no problems. Connected external usb harddrive (format to FAT32), wireless usb keyboard/mouse. Loved the photo viewer, especially the portrait mode; the PQ seems to look sharper than using the TV's (GW3) built-in memory stick reader. Plus it can play music at the same time.

The demos to Motostorm, F1, Resistance, GTHD... all look great.

BD movies look amazing, loads fast. The Discovery Atlas - Italy looks better than the same broadcast on Directv's HD; didn't have any of the pixelation noticable during scene changes probably due to compression thru Directv.

HD video captured from my HDV camcorder works without need to render to another format, just rename m2t to mpg.

Didn't like: web browser, can't download in the background.

Overall, very happy with purchase.

For overall versatility (it plays BD disks, games, many video formats, and can run a linux operating system as a full fledged computer) and component quality, this is the finest piece of computer hardware ever released to market. Sony has almost redeemed itself with this masterpiece of hardware. Makes you wonder why the PS3 executives at Sony were fired for this....

I picked up a 60 GB PS3 on Monday and here are my impressions:

+'s

The system does look quite awesome, very sleek design. I love how it has so many ports (i.e. usb, sd, etc) to hook up external devices and what not. Even though the controller feels like it cost $2, having that classic playstation controller feeling is nice. I LOVE the built in WI-FI, and setting it up to my network was pretty pain-free (besides having to change the broadcast channel on my router). The menu system is ok, not bad but ok. I have an older tv with dvi but I'm not having any issues with BD or anything so that is good. The internet browser is a nice feature but the text is too small even when I enlarge it. The online store is ok.
I am very impressed with Motostorm and Gran Turismo (frame rate is lovely).

I hate to do this but I have to let it out now........while the PS3 has some positives and I'm sure will come into its own....it really can't touch the 360 right now, and anybody that thinks it can either doesn't have the 360, hasn't played with it for an extended amount of time, or is in serious denial and is a PS mega-fanboy. I am not a fanboy of any system or manufacturer....I simply got the PS3 for blu-ray playback and future potential, that is it. I have no plans to buy any games for it right now.

Now, I have had a standalone hd-dvd player for some time now and I am extremely impressed with it. The PQ is phenomenal. I looked on the tier list to decide which BD title I would get and went with Black Hawk Down based on its tier 0 rating......I am not impressed, this would easily be in mid tier 1 or lower in the HD-DVD tier system. I know I can't jump to conclusions based on 1 BD, but this is supposed to be one of the best, correct? I know a lot of people will tell me to check out some CG animation, but that doesn't count in my book...I want film comparisons. At any rate, I have X3 coming in the mail today, so I will continue to compare, but right now HD-DVD is still king in my book.

As far as gaming, online, and menu navigation, the 360 is the current king for me. The menu structure on the 360 is pretty much flawless IMO. It's hard to play games like Resistance after playing Gears of War. I haven't played enough of Resistance, but Call of Duty 3 on the 360 looks better so far. I have also grown to love the 360 controller, still don't know if I like it better than the PS controller but it is close.

In summary, right now xbox 360 is THE system to own, this might change with time, but xbox live is a big deal to me....it wasn't at one time, but now it is a must have.

tbass 2k,
i don't own a 360 (own a ps3) but currently i agree with you on the gaming selection and online content aspect. 360 is "currently" superior in that aspect. Although to me, it didn't matter too much because i'm not a heavy gamer. Although motorstorm and VF5 are on my to buy list. As for the movie, BHD has a lot of film grain which is part of the original film. Trust me, if this movie were released on HD-DVD, it would look the same. Check out "Crank" or Underworld Evolution or Disney's the Wild for some nice looking picture.

Ok, well I watched half of Xmen United last night and I was quite impressed....it's not the sharpest image I have ever seen, but it is much more crisp than BHD (I know, I know....that is how BHD is supposed to look!) At any rate, I am watching the Covenant tonight so I can further analyze the PQ of Blu-ray.

i couldn't have summed it up any better myself. ps3 is a nice system. i like it. but it's no 360. resistance is a decent game but after playing gears it's not even close. one thing i've realized is that i'm going to have a very hard time playing any type of shooter going forward that doesn't have a cover system... also, i'm sorry but i'm not impressed whatsoever with the graphics on the ps3 yet. with all the hype i was expecting gran turismo to look jawdropping. i don't think it even looks as good as project gotham 3...

and man do they need to work on the psn interface. why can't i load up game demos or trailers to download ala xbl? picking one thing at a time is a pita. and the lack of background downloading is absolutely sucking the fun out of my ownership. it's funny, but while waiting for the damn demos to download i find myself playing the 360 lol. i'm still trying to figure out how the whole friends system works, which is pretty counterintuitive if you ask me.

I gotta be honest here... I Loved Gears of War on the 360, but I am so glad I went with the PS3.

I find the PSP menu really easy to navigate, on the PS3. The graphics haven't been awesome, but they haven't been tested with the first generation of games released.
I can't wait til March (after God of War 2 of course) to get my hands on The Godfather port. Using the SIXAXIS controller to grab some Schmo and smash his head into a cash register will be f'ing GREAT!

Has anyone had any experience with Blu-Ray movies freezing up for a few moments and then starting back up?

2 Separate movies have done it so I doubt it is a disc problem...

I've been scanning the posts here but there is quite a bit of information to cover. Has anyone else been experiencing this issue with movies?

Stidd... this is an often reported bug that started with version 1.50 software and continued into 1.51. It is often attributed to the wireless connection, i.e. those with hardwired internet connections are not reporting the problem.

A solution is to reboot the unit, as described in this thread. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9818300&&#post9818300)

Although there aren any games that i want at the moment, i can see how this thing is gonna be a blast. Its very versitile. I have a feeling im gonna keep the PS3 around for other things than gaming and continue to use the 360 for gaming. Only time will tell though.

Well, my tax refund came through. I typically "splurge" with this annual "windfall". Naturally the 60gig PS3 was near the top of my wish list.

First impression: wow, we've come a long way from NES and Commadore 64.
Second impression: why does my wireless not stay connected??

My first Blu-Ray purchase is Casino Royale. I can't wait for it to arrive.

I picked up a PS3 this weekend. I was prepared to return if it didn't live up to expectations. I am not returning it ;)

The only issue I have had so far is that I needed to hook up the composite cables and manually set the display to HDMI. Maybe my set is too old (Samsung 720P DLP), but the PS3 should be able to auto detect a video cable and TV...

I played the majority of demos and my wife liked the NBA 07 game and motorstorm. Motorstorm is definitely the killer app for the PS3 launch. It was by far the most fun of the driving games.

I am looking forward to seeing what Sony comes up with regarding PSP connectivity...

I know the PS3 is priced high relative to the competition, but when you take into account what you get along with free online, I think it is good deal. The mainstream press needs to give the PS3 a break...

Maybe others have had better success with the psp-ps3 connectivity. I find the remote app very weak at the moment. As for now, I can look at my photos, videos from my camcorder, and listen to my music on the ps3 using hte psp. Nothing to write home about.

This is the first game console I have purchased since the late '80s...I love it! I love the games I purchaced (Resistance, Virtua Fighter 5, Motorstorm) and the PS3 it is an outstanding Blu-ray player. Sure, I would love to see a better selection of games (and some 1080p games for that matter), but my only complaint is that it takes forever to download software from the PS Network. I guess you could add the fact is doesn't upconvert DVDs, but that's why I rent/buy BD.

Picked a PS3 up today on a whim. Bought Resistance as well, but haven't played it since I've been setting the system up. Love the XMB. Seems like a good system overall, just needs a heck of a lot more games. I'm looking forward to getting a Xbox 360 soon, too. Sooo glad to be HD gaming now.

I ordered my PS3 from sonystyle today. Now to wait 6-10 days for it to be delivered is not going to be fun, but atleast it was free shipping and since I opened a Sonystyle card I saved $100 on my first order. Planning on picking up Resistance and MotorStorm later this week since those two titles were out of stock when I ordered.

Got my 20Gb PS3 for a birthday present from my gf a couple of weeks ago -I hinted towards the 20Gb because I figure:

-I have a 120Gb HDD sitting right here for it already

-Downloading games off Sony Store over wireless must suck ass seeing as my Belkin 54G is a p.o.s.

-Have no desire to use this to view photos off an SD card -my PC is hooked up to my 47" Doma through HDMI already and I use that for that kind of sh*t.

I bought Call of Duty 3, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Motorstorm and Resistance -the one I'm most disappointed with? COD3 followed by Resistance -neither of them are a patch on any of the big FPS Xbox 360 games like Gears Of War, Vegas, GRAW2 or even the 360 version of COD3. Motorstorm is an unbelievably cool racing game -probably the best and most engaging I've ever played. Next on the purchase list after I trade in COD3 will be Virtua Fighter 5.

I do prefer the XMB as well as the Sony Store over the Xbox menu/Live system though. I can see Sony eating crap for the next 12 months but by that time the 360 will be fading and it'll be Sony's time to shine again (that is, before the 720 turns up). Now if only they'd just shoot that Tretton guy, and maybe Phil Harrison and get some proper management in there, us PS3 owners would all be in a much better position...

Just received via Amazon my PS3. No problems, downloaded 1.7 even before I knew it was a very very new update (same day). Went through and properly setup av settings before playing first game or Blu-ray disc. Sweet. It makes a little more noise than I hoped for, but it's OK. I'm not too keen on the shiny surface, as it catches a lot of light in my otherwise dark-darkish display area.

My only real complaint (very early in the game), is bluetooth vs IR technology. Uggh!!! I am a HUGE supporter of the "1 remote" rule. I think I'll look in to the ugly IR workaround.

Another minor complaint is the size of the controller. My hands are average, but I find my hands are a bit close together when using the remote - a bit cramped. I was looking at the Logitech "Cordless Precision" (p/n 940-000018). Does anyone know how it's size relates to the standard PS3 controller?

I'm very very pleased with the time it takes to start - no time at all compared to the PS2. And I love the main menu interface. Very very cool.

Just bought mine last Wednesday. I tried connecting to my Olevia LT27HVX with a DVI-D cable with a HDMI adapter. It didn't work and I started worrying, but it was solved when I got my DVI-HDMI cable from monoprice. At the moment I have bought 3 Blu-Ray movies and not one PS3 game yet. I'm currently using Blockbuster's gamer pass, of the 3 games I've rented Resistance has been the best, and I've only been playing multiplayer.

So far I'm very pleased with the PS3. I love the design, the GUI(including the PS Store), and Blu-Ray. The games are lacking right now(including PS Store content) but that will be solved in due time. Ninja Gaiden will get the ball rolling in June(that's a big one for me) and hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from there with several new titles every month from then on.

Picked up the PS3 from Game Stop. They have a deal if you bring in your PS2 they will give $100 off the 60gig (all that's available now). I have had it a week now, I haven't had time to play with it as much as I would like, but I think it kicks as*. I bought Resistence w/ it and it looks awesome on 55" 1080p SXRD. I have only watched one Blu-Ray as of yet, which was The Last Samurai, not the best quality, but it had some good visuals. I rented Oblivion and have to say the graphics were very disappointing. Overall, I am extremely happy with the PS3. Glad I got it, and I look forward to its evolution into the monster I know it will become.

My friend brought over his Xbox 360 and we played Gears of War and Resistance on the 3. I have to say not having played either very much. That I definitely found myself drawn to Resistance. I was a little disappointed in Gears of War after hearing all the hype, but again, like I said, I didn't play either all that much.

I just bought mine last week. I was kinda a Sony hater until recently. I was going to buy a Toshiba HD DVD player once they had that "get 4 movies instantly" at Best Buy. I also was shopping on Ebay to try and get one cheap. I figured my boyfriend already has the first generation HD DVD player and if I got the PS3 I'd have the cheapest and the best Blu ray player to boot! So I went for it and got it at Best Buy with my gift cards and got the 2 year replacement warranty also. I only payed about $260 for it and I love it so far. I can't believe how fast it is at loading compared to the HD DVD players!

At first I was pretty depressed. I plugged the system into my Westinghouse 42" lcd and the screen kept blinking in and out. I searched the internet and learned you have to use an HDMI to DVI cable instaed of HDMI to HDMI. A little disappointing since my receiver doesnt have a DVI input but not that big of a deal.

Bought Motostorm, Resistance and NBA 07.

The graphics kick butt and the online game play seems to be a bit smoother then my Xbox 360, not as much lag.

I like the sixaxis controller is nice and light weight and Ive always preferred the design of the PS controllers. It is totally ridicilous they give you a 3 foot cable to charge the controller with, it would be nice to charge it while playing from the couch instead of having to sit on the floor right in front of the TV. Pretty chinsy when you spend that kind of dough. The 360 comes with a 6 or 8 ft cable.

Also no headset, I prefer the way the 360 integrated the headset into the controller.

NBA 07 - One of the worse playing games Ive played in a long while, it is ridicilous. There are almost no defensive controls, the special moves suck and passing is terrible you aim towards a guy wide open on to your right under the basket and it passes it a guy behind you to your left. The AI is also really bad, a Guard will get beat and 3 defenders in the paint will just stand there and watch the guy slam it instaed of helping out. At one point the computer and I combined for 12 dunks in a row between us. Yea thats realistic. The shoot out in the mini games is the only part of the game worth playing.

Played the demo of F1 that will most likely be the next game I purchase while waiting for R6 to be released.

The demos seem to take forever to download, I can download 1 GB game demo with my 360 in less half the time.

Overall I like the system and realized when I bought it that it was probably going to be a while before the games started flowing.

Much more quiet then the 360 which is a huge plus.

Bought my first blueray DVD and was very pleased with the quality.

Is it normal for PS2 games to appear fuzzy on the PS3 via HDMI. When I initially bought the PS3, I retired my PS2. I pulled the PS2 console out of retirement yesterday because PS2 games look much better on it via component than my PS3 via HDMI. I never tried PS2 games on the PS3 via component. Anyways, I'll get less wear and tear on my PS3 if I continue using the PS2 console for PS2 games.

Yea I did that, but you dont want to sit there pulling the cable out and putting it back in everytime it starts blinking, which is everytime you start the system or exit a game back to the PS3 menu system or launch another game. I did that a few times then went and purchased a HDMI - DVI cable.

I'm pretty impressed with the PS3 overall. 2 minor complaints one is that my harmony 880 can't work with the system it seems :( and the other is that I can't seem to get my billing info to be accepted even though my MC works with everything else in the known universe to Sony it isn't a valid card (and I tried entering it about 20x over a period of 3 days still not working).
Still all and all pretty happy with the machine just wish I could have downloaded and tried out flow if my CC info would have worked.

I have to admit as much i hate Sony (tvs are great), this console really impressed me with it's amazing performance, solid construction and sleek design. This is my first console since the Atari 2600 as i was always a PC gamer and never thought much of the consoles. After playing R:FoM, GT:HD and Ninja Gaiden im really beginning to enjoy the PS3 even though i bought it mainly for BD movies. Best part is that it has been performing without any freezeups or issues, totally effortlessly.

When some haters come up with lame arguments like but games don't yet need the BD, i remember the saying "better to have and not need than need and not have". This is the same kind of argument when 8 years ago i was getting my first gaming pc and the guy said why do you need a 4GB hard drive for? It's way too much! He forgot about all the demos and new games that came shortly afterwards which quickly filled my hard drive.

For gaming, no doubt, my 360 gets far, far, FAR more use than my PS3. I like downloading 1080P trailers for movies on the PS3, and it is my main (and pretty high quality) Blu-Ray player using the bluetooth remote [why no backlight?!].

So basically, my PS3 is a Blu-Ray player. I have Resistance for it which is ok... I also have Tiger Woods Golf and Motorstorm which is so-so. But honestly I have only played games on my PS3 for a few hours... and I have had it since December 06.

The PS3 as a gaming/online/online movie platform is sorely behind the 360. As a HDMI Blu-Ray/SACD player, however, it's absolutely fantastic.

It is all about what you want.

Sony isn't going to win this war on being a great Blu-Ray player though.

I know the PS3 is priced high relative to the competition, but when you take into account what you get along with free online, I think it is good deal. The mainstream press needs to give the PS3 a break...

Jeff

the psp connectivity is nothing to brag about. running non-oem software (homebrew ftw) i was able to control the ps3 via psp anywhere via hotspot. i can view movies, music and pix, anything on the ps3. (no, you can't play resistance on your psp). so that's cool. other than that....well, there's little progress made.

and your comment about free online...is that. it's free. and most stuff that are free are crap. this is no different. ps online is like live silver. i don't mind paying for live gold because the experience is better than the ps online.

i thought the same as you when i had the ps2 and i laughed and pointed at those idiots with the xbox and had to pay to play online. when i got the 360 and paid to play, it was like moving from dial-up to broadband. there's no way sony can afford to lose anymore money by offering free online that's comparable to live.

Yup, my PS3 is my BD player and is used for HD movie trailers from their store. We need more!

There are no games for it that interest me. Plus, I looked at some of the upcoming games and they still look pretty lame.

I just got the PS3 two weeks ago. So far, I LOVE IT :D

I initially bought it as a gaming machine. I'm absolutely loving Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Virtua Fighter 5. To me, those are the two games to get for the system right now. All the reviews seem to point to Resistance as the game to get. But after playing something like Gears of War, I was left totally underwhelmed with Resistance.

Oh yeah, I'm a hardcore Ninja Gaiden fan (played the Xbox version to death). When I heard the demo came out for the PS3, that was the final nail in the coffin for me :p

Personally, the lack of games right now isn't really bothering me. I work a lot more now, so i have less time....so I prefer quality over quantity. VF5 and Oblivion are more than enough to keep me busy in the coming months. Since I own all three consoles, I already have trouble keeping up with the new games as it is (I bought so many games on 360 that I haven't even really played yet.....too much Guitar Hero :P)!

And I was indifferent towards Blu Ray until I actually popped a movie in. And, wow, definitely impressed. I already have 10 blu-ray discs and planning to buy more. The PQ quality is so much better than the HD programs I get on cable.

So no regrets with my PS3 :)

HAHA, sony got another one into the blu with their evil plan :p

Its all good, they got me with their evil plan but in reverse. I bought it simply for blu-ray movies and decided to try a game, and since then i now own 3 games and 2 downloadable games

lol, yeah I feel so dirty now! :p

I own an HDTV, but I'm not really a huge home theater buff. But after Blu-Ray, I've been now looking into getting a much larger display and put together a decent home theater setup. That's why I strolled into these forums. :)

First Impression thread........

Spent 21/2 months researching to get the PS3.....

Got it 3 days ago.......

Simple........ It is worth every little penny (LOTS OF PENNYS)

Left it on the 2nd day for 20 hours, saw blu ray movies, played games, downloaded demos and trailers....... all without problems.....

Definetly it filled all my expectations, if someone is checking out our forum for advice on getting a PS3... simply get one.... now or later... get it...

I've had mine a few days now....First impression is great. I love it. Looks and sounds amazing, the XMB isn't too badly designed, the updates seemed simple enough.....I think one of the surprises for me, and highlights thus far is the online store with the playable free demo downloads and movie trailers.......I only have one game right now (Resistance) and this has enabled me to try other games and also decide on buying some of them, without having to try and rent.....The wireless controllers are great (albeit the missing rumble) and have yet to need a recharge. I saw a Blu-Ray on my friends and was blown away. I already tried a few of my dvds and the upscale is impressive. I am happy with my buy.....Pre-ordered GTA-IV today and looking forward to the 2nd wave of games this fall....

I got mine several days ago thanks to the 0% financing till '09 offer that Circuit City has going on along with a free controller. Setting up the system (wireless, display settings, FW update etc.) took about 15 minutes to get everything up and running. The system is well built and all of the stuff that it has is well worth the price IMO.

One of the things that I really like about the PS3 is how quiet it is compared to the 360; with the PS3 I don't have to worry about any vacuum cleaners running in the background making noise :) and the web browser....while not that good is a nice addition for those that want to do some web browsing on their TV. Running Linux is one of the features that I'm also looking forward to, I was able to play around with Ubuntu on the PS3 and will be installing it pretty soon.

Right now what I don't like about it is of course, the lack of games but everybody knows that the first 12 months of a console's lifespan is always full of dry spells as far as games go. Also, what's up with the hideous looking Playstation Store interface.....they need to make it look more organized and elegant. The lack of a centralized online network a la Xbox Live hurts but you can't complain much considering that online play is free.

Overall, I happy with my purchase. The wealth of features is worth the price and It will get better once the games start coming out later this year.

Check out the playable demos in the online store, that will keep you busy until more good games come out. Motorstorm and F1 are insane, and I will be buying both thanks to the demos.............

Also, I'm not sure I see a need for a "centralized online network" seeing that each game has its own online interface.

Enjoy!

Yup

Is that how you normally listen to them? Why not put them on stands? You will get a much better experience with them at least at ear level.

The upscale update is a really big plus for me, I can actually buy dvd's again and get that pretty much HD quality out of them. I popped in "Children of Men" the other day and it looks pretty much HD. The tv has it running at 1080i and it sure looks it. Also popped in "Let's Go to Prison," once again it looked superb.

I just got one and it was amazing; hard to belive at first. I started with the details such as making an account to dl demos, and found it was amazingly sharp on my old 27" crt magnavox tv. But I just got a 50" plasma, Philips 50PF7321D/37 and I'm breaking it in.

I soon found that it gets VERY hot, so I put a fan on it.

You need to take it out of the box when you run it!! :D

But seriously almost no complaints have been posted about heat & the PS3, mine has been running continuosly since the folding @ home was released & I have no heat problems, make sure you have plenty of ventilation & it's not setting on something like a reciever that is pumping heat into it.

^^^ The trailers that most people are downloading are from the Playstation store. When you are in the XMB (opening screen you see when you log in to the PS3), scroll to the right and you will see 'PSN Store', go there and you can download all the trailers that Sony has there as well as any new ones that are released every Thursday. Others download some HD trailers on there computers, convert them to MP4 format and transfer them to the PS3.

I can't help you with your other questions. :)

I bought one.

I love it so far. The one Blu-Ray movie I bought (Goodfellas) looks incredible, and the standard DVD upscaler is almost as good as my DVD player (which I'm going to sell). The PS2 games I've tried so far don't look like HD games, but the improvement is pretty stunning when you're used to an S-Video-connected PS2.

Next on the list is trying to get the streaming media to work, then maybe PSN. I'm trying to decide whether I want to buy a used copy of Madden '07 just to play an HD game, or wait until '08 comes out...or does anyone else have a game recommendation? I don't like FPSs, but I get into most other things. I'm really waiting for GH3, and intend to use the PS3 as a media center as much as a gaming console.

I just bought mine last week. I bought it mainly for blu-ray and so that the videos from my Sony HDR-SR1 Camcorder (AVCHD) can play on it. I haven't spent much time on it, but my wife and I did watch a movie the first day we got it ( Curse of the Golden Flower) and all I can say is WOW!! The colors are so vibrant, it makes me feel like I was watching the movie while on LSD! I also bought Plant Earth (BD) for $33.50!! Cheaper than the dvd version I bought.

With the games I haven't really played any execpt the demos, but from what I see the quality and smoothness is jsut like my recently built gaming PC which has all the latest and greatest components.

I'll be installing linux in a few days, I'll let you guys know how that goes

Hi,

I just got a ps3 last thursday night. I have it connected to my 46" 1080P lcd via hdmi with the sound going to the receiver via optical. I already have a 360 with the HD DVD add on. I am format neutral and just like games. I was able to update and make an account (Mindwarper). It is quieter then the 360.

Things I loved:

Blu Ray player
The controller charging cable is a standard usb cord.
4 usb ports in front.
Power supply is inside.
It is fairly quiet.
It links up with my ps2 for lan gaming !!!!!!!
Backwards compatibility.
Upreses old games slightly.
Upconverting dvd
video out connector is the same as the ps2.
Free online

Things I didn't like:

A) The price. It is a great piece of hardware, but it was expensive.
B) Lack of games. I don't own a ps3 game. I am going to try some demos. I might get resistance to man, but Ratchet and Clank is what I'm most interested in. Or a new ssx.

C) Some ps2's online servers down (ssx3 for example). All old live enabled xbox games that are backward compatible are still playable online. I like that feature a lot. I have multiple copies of games so I can play on separate screens.

Things that would have been nice:

A usb to ps2 controller thingy in the box. or better yet...
A ps2 connection on the box for those that still have wireless ps2 controllers for multi play.
A hdmi cable in the box, or at least component cables.
Ability to output audio over hdmi and optical (like the 360)

Ps2 games that are lan:
atv2
atv3
heroes of the pacific
hot wheels stunt track
mtx mototrax
Socom
Tony hawk
Twisted Metal.

Does anyone know any other lan games? If I am sending the sound via optical, should it be set to bitrate? What are some good game demos or good games? Are there any sci fi rpg's? Is there any story mode co op games?

I have had a Xbox 360 since launch and also have an Xbox. I had previously purchased a PS2 2.5 years ago and then sold it because I liked the Xbox better. Sony definatly went in the right direction with the PS3. I wondered if I should buy one for quite a while. I figured I could hold out since I had a Xbox 360 with HDDVD player. I was able to pick up a PS3 for a great price on ebay and I am impressed. I actually thought about selling it but I am going to keep it since there are so many uses with blue ray and the games and multimedia. Overall I'm impressed with the system and it is way better than the PS2.

when setting up the wireless..it will ask for your key, if you made your network secure. If not, you should just be able to leech off anyone's connection. (unsecure, that is)

After wanting a PS3 since it's release, I finally did it. I ordered one used on ebay from a seller with very good record for a very nice price. It arrived on Tuesday. For used, it was in perfect condition in original box with all accessories.

The physical appearance of the system is sweet. Very well styled and looks great next to the rest of my components. The controller was a lot lighter then I thought it would be.

The first thing I did was setup my accounts and download some demos and videos from PSN. The XMB was very nice. I used to have a PSP so it was nice to see the familar layout. Setting everything up and tweaking to my likeness was a breeze. I bought a Nyko Blu-wave IR remote so that I could use my Harmony remote with the system for Blu-ray playback. I put in Monster House to test out the Blu-ray quality. WA-WA-WEE! Beautiful. My Harmony remote worked very well with the system as well. It might be a little slower response, but not anything slower than most DVD Players I've used. The video looked great and I was pleasantly surprised with the far better sound then the DVD version of this movie.

I'm not much of a gamer. I like sports games (and easy ones!). So far I've played the following demos:
Motorstorm-Fun game, excellent graphics and great soundtrack (yeah Nirvana!)
R:FoM-Sweet game but I suck at FPS and got my butt kicked!
GT:HD Concept-Very realistic simulation but gets kinda boring
Ridge Racer-Great graphics, but I prefer Motorstorm for racing fun
NBA07-As much as I love sports game, this game sucks!
Ninja Gaiden-Very smooth Ninja fun, though I wasn't very good at it
Virtua Tennis 3-WOW! Tennis is fun?? I'd hate to admit it but this is my favorite demo played!
Armored Core 4-Not impressed, but I've never really wanted to be a giant robot...

With the help of some online resources, I was able to set up streaming from my Mac to my PS3. My tinkering got iTunes and my photos streamed to the PS3. The photo slideshow built-in to the PS3 is really cool. I don't know how much I'd use it, but the way my photos were thrown onto the table like snapshots and I could zoom in and pan left or right across them was awesome. I've yet to get HD videos on my mac to play, but I have to convert it to mpeg2 I guess.

I'd rate my satisfaction with the PS3 after a couple days at 100%. It really is an amazing system, and I'm sure it will only get better as I watch more movies, play more games and learn how to use more content on it.

I have completely changed my opinion of the 360 based off my brother's experience and what I've read online. I'm now focused on the PS3. I've never owned a Playstation, but why not jump on it especially with it's Blu-Ray capabilities and the fact that I've got a 52" 1080P Samsung LCD on the way. I've got a few questions about configuration, control, etc. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

All of my components will be in a closet about 6-7 feet away from my 52" Sammy LCD which will be wall mounted. I'll have one HDMI out coming from the receiver to the TV. I intend on putting the PS3 in the closet with the other components but I'm concerned about a couple of issues.

1. The PS3 controller is interactive in that it will allow you to turn it like a steering wheel, etc. to control the action on screen. Will I still be able to do this with the PS3 in the closet, or do you have to have a clear line of sight? I believe I'll be ok since it is Wi Fi compatible, but just wanted some confirmation.
2. Speaking of Wi Fi, what universal remote do you guys use to control your PS3? I have a Logitech 890 RF remote on the way with all my other HT gear for my man room, but it doesn't look like it will control the PS3. Should I just get the Sony PS3 remote and if so, will it work with the unit sitting off to the side behind a closet door?
3. Since the PS3 doesn't do any upconversion for SD DVDs, do you recommend an additonal upconvert DVD player like the Oppo DV-981HD? I haven't seen the Oppo in person, but there are a WHOLE lot of people on here raving about it.
4. My office is located on the second story of my house. That's where the cable modem and router is as well. Will I be able to play my PS3 online with it in the basement (and in a closet in the basement at that)? Any gaming adapter necessary to make it talk to the router upstairs?

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

1. It uses Bluetooth technology so no line of sight is needed
2. Because it uses Bluetooth, no universal remotes work with it unless you buy a USB accessory
3. The PS3 does upconvert SD DVD's
4. The PS3 has Wifi so as long as you have a Wifi router you will be good

Well I called Sony today to confirm the upconversion aspect of the PS3. They told me that in software update 1.80, it addressed the upconversion issue and the unit will now upconvert SD DVDs to 1080P. I am very, very skeptical of this since to me upconversion is more of a hardware function than software. There have since been two newer sofware updates...versions 1.81 and 1.82.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Does the PS3, with the new updates, now indeed upconvert SD DVDs up to 1080P? The CNet.com review listed lack of upconversion as one of the negatives of the unit, but then again the review was from 11/06. According to the tech rep in Sony's PS3 department, it will now do it.

Toughts....I had planned on buying the Oppo unit as well but if this is true about the PS3 then I'm heading to the store.

Thanks guys.

The PS3 upconverts to 1080P and does it well.

Guys,

I have a 2 questions before I jump in to the ps3 fan base.

1. How is the ps3 holding up as a media player for every day use? ( my 360 is to fragile for every day use).

2. Is there a way to use the dvd remote with the harmony?

I just bought a PS3 today; Target had already instituted the $100 price drop and I thought this would be a good time to pick one up. I've owned both a PS1 (which was a real workhorse for me) and two PS2's (both of which died about a year after their respective purchases). As a result of my PS2 experiences, I haven't owned a Sony console for about 5 years. Over the past few years I've been gaming exclusively with my Xbox 360 and, before that, the original Xbox.

As far as the PS3 goes; here are my initial impressions from about 5 hours of playtime today:

- The unit is very quiet; I never once heard either the fans, the DVD drive or the hard drive during my testing today. The unit did seem to get quite warm on the left and right sides while it was turned on.

- The controller weighs next to nothing without the rumble motors. Personally, I've never care much for rumble one way or another as I quickly tune the feature out while playing. It charged very quickly, but I wish the included USB cable was a little longer so I could play comfortably from my couch while charging.

- The built-in wifi is a welcome feature; getting onto the internet was a snap.

- Sony's online store seems a bit sparse to me; not much in the way of content yet relative to Xbox Live. Also disappointing is that fact that you cannot try downloadable games before deciding to buy (at least I didn't see a way to do it).

- I picked up F1 (I'm a big racing fan) and while it looks alright, the visual presentation was a bit disappointing, especially the fact that it only runs at 720p. I also downloaded the Resistance demo. It was fun and had a great presentation, but I've played a ton of FPS shooters on the Xbox and 360 it didn't stand out enough to warrant a purchase at $60; I'll definitely buy it when it drops a bit.

- I don't have any blu-rays to try (there was no Talladega Nights in the box, I guess that was a limited time offer) but the upconversion of standard def DVD's was absolutely fantastic; far better than anything I expected and even superior to my dedicated Panasonic 1080p upscaling DVD player.

Overall, the PS3 will be a keeper for me. I'm looking forward to trying a few native 1080p games and BluRay DVD's. I only hope it ends being a more reliable piece of equipment than my two PS2's.

ClevelandRob,
Where did you buy it? Most of the chain stores have pricematching for 30 or 60 days. Also ask them to reprint the receipt with a date after 7/1 to take advantage of the 5 free BR discs.

I bout mine 2 weeks ago at BB, but I made sure to ask, and it was confirmed for 60 days, so I am heading back today.

Guys,

I have a 2 questions before I jump in to the ps3 fan base.

1. How is the ps3 holding up as a media player for every day use? ( my 360 is to fragile for every day use).

2. Is there a way to use the dvd remote with the harmony?

There is an IR remote you can buy on Amazon for less than 15. It includes a remote and a transmitter that plugs into a USB plug, and then program the Harmony.

Bought mine "almost" new on ebay... :o If I had waited for a price cut, the PS3 would have been $600 forever!

I too am a new PS3 owner.

I've had my 360 since launch and it's by far the best system in my house for games and then it's the Wii. Until some real compelling games come out for the PS3, it's my bluray player.

To stay faithful to the title of the thread, my first impressions are good in terms of the hardware. The console itself is very solid and it feels like a a lot of money in technology in that box. The interface is good. It's hard to get lost and if you do, it's easy enough to get back. The setup is fairly easy and it requires a few answers to things. The demos look great and the sound is amazing.

a few things that bother me. the controller is cheap feeling and it's light. It is definitely inferior to the 360's controller based on ergonomics alone. There is a dearth of next gen games that will flex the PS3 muscle right now and playing PS2 games really don't appeal to me much since I play with my friends on Live. Sony's online experience is a bit light and there really isn't much to download so I can't say that Sony's online experience is even close to XBLM

I'm very pleased with the PS3 video capabilities and sound processing so in the mean time, it will be my main movie player with the possibility of games in the future.

I finally got wireless access working for my PS3 last night. I went to the playstation store and was navigating using the wireless controller. I found that the directional arrows didn't do anything on the internet, but the analog joystick worked to move the cursor around. I moved the cursor over the boxes on the right side of the screen (The ones with the videos and game demos, etc) and couldn't find any button that would let me select a box. I thought the X button was suppose to do this, but it didn't do anything. Do I need a mouse or something else to use the internet? Is there something I am doing wrong? I was looking forward to trying some of the downloads, but couldn't find anyway to select any of them.

Otherwise my first impressions are outstanding. I am very impressed with this machine as a bluray player and DVDplayer. Will be looking at getting glass cover for the front of my rack to tame the noise a bit though (gets quite loud after .5-1hour even when standing vertical)

when I was browsing the web, it was the X button that did the left click function and the directional pad was actually easier to use because it placed the cursor right over the link instead so it's somewhat of a shortcut.

I wold re-sync the controller and the PS3 to get the browsing right. that doesn't sound like it's supposed to happen.

Amazing piece of hardware. I bought it since I needed a new PC. I will install YDL and use it daily as a PC. It's easy to setup. It looks very good. It's smaller than I thought it was. The pictures make it appear large. It's quiet and I like the bluetooth remote, you can use it from the other room. My blu-ray movies/games haven't arrived yet so no 1080p experiences yet.

Hi guys,

Not trying to flame bait here, just pointing out my first impressions as coming from a person who's only modern consoles have been Xboxes.

I purchased a PS3 this week because I wanted to take advantage of the price drop, while the 5 Blu-Ray movie deal was in effect and while the 60GB model still had the emotion engine in it.

As far as I can tell (granted only from rumours) the new 80GB models will be back at $599 and will not include the hardware for PS2 emulation.

OK, here goes.

Pros

* Nice looking and solidly built device.

* Internal power supply a nice touch especially with the standardized plug from the unit to the wall.

* Very quiet and thats with HD activity and Disc Activity

* Nice DVD upscaling (tested only over component at the moment with unprotected content)

* Menu is very responsive and only limited by how fast you can move through the settings.

* Bluetooth support is nice and easy to add mouse and keyboard support

* Bluetooth remote is very useful for movie playback

* Blu-Ray discs load at a decent speed (nothing to drool over though, HD-DVD is faster on 360 addon)

* Very easy to setup and get to using

* Nice menu system that matches their other products and future receivers etc.

* Sony has been improving over time the Firmware and added a number of new features.

* Folding at home is cool and serves a purpose.

* Photo Album show is really cool and they need to add other items like this that show off the strength of the graphics and processing power.

CONS

* having to connect the controller directly to the device to synch it

* controller is way too light and feels cheap without the rumble to weigh it down ( there should be a weight in it to give it some heft)

* So far the only Blu-Ray movie I have has stuttered in a couple of spots and randomly skipped to the next chapter while playing (brand new movie out of box, Casino Royale) running the latest firmware.

* PS3 is geared to support HDMI over everything else to a fault and some design decisions (no proper scaler) have suffered due to myopic obsession with 1920x1080p.

* Audio over TOSLink has narrow support for receivers that do not provide playback of bitstream or LPCM ( have a sony receiver and it only does 2 channel over the LPCM ) if someone knows how this is possible without HDMI I would be interested in improving the audio over Toslink.

* most games (anecdotal from demos) support only 720P, rather odd since Sony decided not to include a scaler which would at least prevent people from noticing that.

* Sony Store is a glorified web page and no where near as good as the 360 Marketplace, this is not fanboy rhetoric, just fact. If you have not used the Marketplace you have no basis for arguing this, and others who have I am sure would agree that Microsoft's implementation is superior in almost every aspect.

* Downloads from the Sony Store when using background mode are excruciatingly slow. They are marginally better when downloading one item at a time.

* not enough memory to load certain web pages

* no ability (that I've found) to change the background color of the menu ( even though PSP's can do this and have been able to for quite a while) and it appears to change it's color randomly.

Now understand this is all from just a nights usage, and I will dig deep into this as time goes by.

Best decision this year, so far. I love the graphics. I've only owned PS's. I like it's ability. Nice an sleek design. I agree with some reviewers that it does get warm, but it's very silent. I hardly even notice that it's on.

I bought Madden 07 since it was on sale and have downloaded some games. I'm more of a sports player. I can't wait to see the 08 lineup of games that are due out.

I upgraded the firmware and booted up my PC in the basement and was able to get my MP3's and Photos playing in the living room. My wife likes this feature. Now if I can figure out how to get the PS3 to wake my pc out of standby, i've had to turn standby off for the meantime.

I rented BR Apacolypto and will watch it this weekend. I did pop the disk in and the main menu screen looks really great. I am also going to be testing the upconverting capabilities with regular DVD's. Just need to get some free time.

I haven't had any real negative experiences yet, but I will update if I do. Other than CC double charging my credit card, which I am still trying to get them to fix.

Finally made the purchase.

I bought the Samsung 4665F LCD and a PS3 along with Casino Royale, Behind Enemy Lines, Click, Black Hawk Down, Departed, Ice Age 2 and for a ps3 game I bought MLB 07: The Show.

For the PS3 review, I must say it's a solid system. I have had no HDMI issues that everyone is talking about. The graphics are great and the online system isn't as bad as I thought. I also own a xbox 360, and I must say, the ps3 is better.

It's quiet, mine stays cool, and there's not one thing I can really complain about.

As far as the BluRay quality/playback. I was a little disappointed.

Some scenes just seem so grainy. I thought the quality would be much much better than what I'm viewing. My expectations were just a little higher I suppose.

MLB the show is an amazing game, By far better than 2k7. for both systems.

I'm looking forward to getting Madden and NHL.

Add me to friends if you would like my user name is Rob423.

anything I can change or help improve the quality of my BluRay Playback would be appreciated.

Click by far had the worst grainy issues. Casino Royale I thought was the best quality out of the bunch with Behind Enemy Lines in 2nd. I didn't see what was so good about Black Hawk Down. It didn't impress me at all. Maybe I have to give it another watch.

As far as lighting goes in my room for the 4665F, My room is pitch black Dark. Definitely no Glare Issues here.

PS3 is great.

They are coming out with a 399$ version which sports a 40GB be on the look out for that. I got the 60GB for 499 and 5 mail in BLuRays. Not a bad deal.

The PS3 Blu-Ray Playback is as good as the BEST Blu-Ray
player out there like the Pioneer at 3-Times the price. I
KNOW - I own BOTH.

All I can recommend is make sure you have FW 1.82.

Other than that - make sure your PS3 is set to output
the native resolution for your display. The PS3 likes to
think it knows what resolution is best and often tries
to supply a higher resolution than the NATIVE resolution
of your display. AGAIN - Native resolution is the KEY
word here not what resolutions your display can accept.

ALSO Some movies do actually have grain put in by the
producer - like Casino Royale - Hanger Scene - is intentional.

It charges the controller too, which is very cool.

Bad disc?

* PS3 is geared to support HDMI over everything else to a fault and some design decisions (no proper scaler) have suffered due to myopic obsession with 1920x1080p.

Seems like going whole-hog on HDMI is the right thing to do considering the life-expectancy of a gaming system is long. What do you mean by no proper scaler?

* most games (anecdotal from demos) support only 720P, rather odd since Sony decided not to include a scaler which would at least prevent people from noticing that.

The PS3 upscales, are you saying it isn't working? Hard to believe since that's a major selling point now for legacy games.

* Downloads from the Sony Store when using background mode are excruciatingly slow. They are marginally better when downloading one item at a time.

A bandwidth problem? I wonder if they just didn't plan for the traffic they are getting. Or is it something local to your network? I wold be suprised if it was a multi-tasking issue. It could be a bug but it sounds like a bandwidth issue.

* not enough memory to load certain web pages

I'm curious to know more, is it specific content that it doesn't like? Flash, movies, images? Link please?

Nice write up.

I am no expert, but one thing I have learned from reading posts here is that there's a certain amount of tweaking required for both display and player. Since it's a new system you might have your work cut out for you to get things tuned.

Agreed. This was the only aspect of the PS3 that I wasn't entirely thrilled with. It definitely takes some tweaking to get everything just right. I am using HDMI & SPDIF and running it at 1080p. Once everything was setup 'right' (i.e. not what the PS3 thought was right), it ran much better from A/V perspective.

It does run pretty quietly (compared to my 360Elite), but it does get a whole heck of a lot hotter - and that is saying alot, since the Elite gets wicked hot. The heat that the PS3 generates is probably my only gripe with the system, as it is solid otherwise.

Despite these minor issues, I am liking the system a lot. I would have to say that only fanboys of a particular system would dare say that one is better than the other at this point. They are both solid with their own little tendencies toward odd behavior.

I own the Samsung 4665F and I'm pretty sure the native resolution is 1080P. which is what the PS3 is set for.

Don't get me wrong BluRay looks great. I just thought it was going to look alittle better, I think I just had higher expectations.

Some of the scenes are each movie look fantastic. i just wished the entire Film was the same quality throughout.

Not trying to flame bait here, just pointing out my first impressions as coming from a person who's only modern consoles have been Xboxes.

CONS

Its typically only on the first time use (or to charge the battery). Unless you're planning on introducing a new controller every week, this is a complete non issue.

* controller is way too light and feels cheap without the rumble to weigh it down ( there should be a weight in it to give it some heft)

I do want rumble, but the fact that its light makes it easier to hold for extended periods and move around for the motion.

* So far the only Blu-Ray movie I have has stuttered in a couple of spots and randomly skipped to the next chapter while playing (brand new movie out of box, Casino Royale) running the latest firmware.

Coincidentally thats the only BD I own and mine is fine. Sounds like you have a damaged disc.

If you have not used the Marketplace you have no basis for arguing this, and others who have I am sure would agree that Microsoft's implementation is superior in almost every aspect.

While I could care less as long as the menus are simple and I can get the content, I think it is a pretty bland site. I am not worried as this is easily improvable over time.

* Downloads from the Sony Store when using background mode are excruciatingly slow. They are marginally better when downloading one item at a time.

I just queue up a bunch and let it fly, I don't think its that bad at all. I think if you don't use the PS while downloading it seems faster, but I haven't actually tested it for sure.

Not trying to flame, but this was definitely a big disappointment for me. The DL speed is entirely too slow. Granted XBL was originally slow also, but if you were to take two equal sized files and download them from XBL and PSN, XBL would be done infinitely faster. PSN is just slow and they need to increase their bandwidth or efficiency.

What's the difference in price for the two services?

Free vs. 50 bones of course ;-)

That said, I would gladly pay (and I do pay) the 50 bucks for faster connection rates and a more stable game environment (i.e. less hacks and cheaters...or at least aggressively hunted cheaters).

Again, this isn't a knock on the PS3 - I like mine a lot, but this is the standard arguement of 'you get what you pay for' - which sucks when you are willing to pay to not have to wait 3 hours to download a 600mg file or play with the occasional hacker / cheater.

I am speculating that Sony is giving it away for free since it's under development. It will get better and they may eventually charge for it. They probably had no choice. The online service wasn't mature but they wanted to have something so they run it "as-is" and no charge. Charging for it would generate support calls and those cost money.

As for faster service, they may well pass along the cost of higher bandwidth to the premium user that pays a little more.

Hackers/cheaters will always be there, they can prevent a lot of it but that costs money and takes time.

So if you were paying $50 for the service now, how would you feel about it? (^;

Totally agree - I wouldn't pay for it now. As noted previously, you get what you pay for...but as you said, all of the items I would like to see cost $$...hence if PSN charged, they would have some more scratch to add onto the network bandwidth, etc.

XBL is clearly the backbone of M$'s strategy to develop games / home entertainment. PSN seems a bit like a rushed add-on without real focus on quality. Yeah, HOME seems good on paper, but if they don't increase speeds, I am not sure that I will care in the least.

They are, however, making some money off of PSN via marketing and advertisement $$ - which will only increase over time.

I got my PlayStation 3 last week and am having a blast with Resistance and Fight Night 3. I'm playing on a standard definition 480i set, but I’m looking forward to buying a 1080p set later this year. I got my PS3 yesterday, after a client (and long time friend) gave it to me as a gift, (and for doing a little work for him.) It is the 60gb model. I took it home, hooked it up, and in the process knocked my receiver off the shelf, causing me to spend the next 45 minutes getting everything back in place. But that's a different story.

My first impressions: So far, I can't get the wireless to connect to my router,(or stay connected anyway) so I haven't been able to DL FW 1.9. To be fair, I have a rather long run, as my theater is in a detached building from the router, and the singal strength is pretty low. On the other hand, I've heard others are having the same problem, and my 360 works fine from this distance. Anyway, I'll try connecting it with an ethernet line this afternoon. But the main point is that, because I don't have that worked out, I can't comment on the online aspects of the PS3.

As far as setup is concerned, it wasn't very difficult - although it wasn't as intuitive as the 360 setup. I think I like the 360 interface better, and I don't think that's because I'm more used to it. I do like the music and graphic that play on load up. The PS3 interface kind of looks neat, but I don't think it's well organized. Maybe after you get used to it, it works out better. And at any rate, it's not bad, it's just not great.

The controller is wireless, but needs to be plugged in via a short USB cable the first time you start it up. The controller feels cheap and plasticy. It also not all that well laid out. Of all my first impressions about the PS3, this one was the one I thought was the worst. I don't like the controller at all. The better get a lot of use out of the motion sensing, in order to make up for the other design flaws of the controller.

The PS3 unit itself seems well built. Fortunately, it doesn't have the problems the 360 has, (and which I've experienced first hand). It seems to work well, it works reliably, and it works quietly. The PS3 is clearly a solid CE item.

That's about it for now. The PS3 seems like a reliable machine, with a poor controller and mediocre interface. I'm having trouble getting it connected, but that may be a "me" thing, not a PS3 thing. I won't review the software for it, since there aren't enough games out yet that do it justice, and I haven't rented any movies yet.

I've looked through several pages on this thread but there don't seem to be many comments regarding the audio capabilities of the ps3.

7.1 lossless audio with Resistance?
BD movies such as Blackhawk down & POTC are meant to sound out of this world via pcm. Is anyone here taking advantage of the lossless audio abilities of the ps3????

After having me 360 for on year, it started overheating and freezing so I found a guy online to remove the X clamps and fix the over heating issue. It was just over a year so not covered by M$ and they had not announced the 3 year bump yet. After roughly $80 and 3 weeks I get my box back and it's working! Yeah! I've already spent a ton on the HD DVD add on, guitar hero 2 with two guitars, mods, controllers, controller chargers, etc. We play Guitar Hero for 2 nights and boom, it just turns off the game....my disc drive failed. At that point I said, "Forget this M$ piece of defective crap, I'm getting something I know will work"

I took 1 hour of negotiations with the wife and we were on our way to Best Buy to pick up a 60 gig model.

Got home and set everything up, I think setup went very quickly and once I got it tuned up to 1080i I was impressed with the sharp colors. Now, the 360 was hooked up in our theater room, with an HD projector and surround sound and everything. We used the 360 to play the one HD DVD movie we had and regular DVD's. I was always dissappointed with the quality of the movie playback as it always looked grainy. Movie upconverting was one of the features I used in my debate with my wife.

We sat down, fired up the popcorn cart (it was a wedding gift) then popped in Chronicles of Narnia. Holy crap! The picture was amazing, it handled the colors beautifully and with the Sony Remote everything ran perfectly! I did get one flash of picture where the picture disappears but the sound continues for about 2 seconds when the movie first started, an issue I've had with other consoles, but then it never happened again.

The remote does feel like and a little cheap, I suspect that will go away when they add the rumble back in soon. The wifi and connection was a no brainer and way better than having to pay $99 for a stupid add on (Sony and Nintendo knew what they were doing by adding wifi standard). I haven't tried a Blu Ray movie yet, that will happen Tuesday when I pick up 300 on Blu Ray! Hell Yes!

Why didn't I make this switch sooner and rid my house of that stupid over-heating, disc scratching, drive breaking, white piece of crap?

You will find that most people on this forum have a 5.1 system as opposed to a 7.1 system. Also, since this a gaming section, not much talk of the Blu-ray movie aspect of the PS3.

To answer your question, I have a 7.1 system and the 2 movies you have mentioned sound amazing in 7.1 and PCM, you should also check out Casino Royale. As for Resistance, having a 7.1 system with that game just added to the experience. :D

My first impressions: So far, I can't get the wireless to connect to my router,(or stay connected anyway) so I haven't been able to DL FW 1.9. To be fair, I have a rather long run, as my theater is in a detached building from the router, and the singal strength is pretty low.

I had to change to several different channels on my WAP to get it above 80% strength for reliability, so you might want to try that.

Indeed. 7.1 through my Denon 4306. Resistance and the few other 7.1's are a treat, but PLIIx on the 5.1's make it near indistinguishable. Resistance it's particularly noticible when you turn around and get the pan across all 7 speakers, though. :)

I can relate to that, spending my $$$ on the speakers first, will have 7.1 by the end of August then looking forward to picking up a hdmi receiver & ps3 by Xmas.

nice impressions rockstardaddy, Xmas can't come soon enough.

really looking forward to 7.1 gaming. Those rear channels are like eyes in the back of your head :)

First impressions, it's loud!
I just wasn't ready for that, it sits in a cabinet on a shelf over my LDC TV with a big opening at front and a back opening as wide as the PS3. Horizontal orientation.

Here's a quick test I did, ambient room temp 25C.
- Start it, silent, no fan running.
- 5 min. in, 1st fan speed kicks in, slightly audible but no bother.
- Put in a music CD, 5 min. in 2nd fan speed kicks in. I can hear the fan
over soft music.
- Over the rest of the CD, fan will go to 1st speed and come back to 2nd speed.

3rd speed of fan will kick in games, pretty loud at that point but not as bad because
of the game background music and all.

I tried a standard DVD movie and could hear the fan over 2 people having a conversation in the movie, will try to borrow a Blu-Ray movie to see if it gets worst.

Everything works though and I really want to keep it, but still sitting on the fence now.

As of yesterday, I'm a proud owner of a PS3! I bought it mainly for its Blu-Ray capabilities and because I was in need of my first HD peripheral for my Sammy LCD. I must admit, it is a very sexy looking piece of hardware. I picked it up because I just really needed to see the movie "300" in HD and what better way than with a new PS3. Also, a lot of great looking games coming out for the PS3 which I'm happy to find out. My 360 will get even more rest since I haven't really been playing much as of late (well, not until Halo 3 of course). I have to say that the PS3 looks really rreally sharp on my HDTV, much sharper than my 360 via component. It feels good owning 2 great console systems! :)

it must be hit&miss or YMMV cause my ps3 is pretty quiet... it is possible that depending what you place the ps3 on, the sound it emits via the fan gets attenuated or dampened to a certain extent... happens with desktop computer too... when computer is on top of desk, it is 2 to 3 times louder than it is close to the floor on a lower cabinet... set it on the ground and the sound is almost whisper quiet...

the tv stand is large and with the heft of the sammy 4661 on tops, most fan sound gets dampened or transmitted to the ground via the stand... hope that makes sense...

I just got a ps3 recently. I have it connected to my 46" 1080P lcd via hdmi with the sound going to the receiver via optical. I already have a 360 with the HD DVD add on. I am format neutral and just like games. I rent from netflix for I don't see the need to own non rare disks. I was able to update and make an account (Mindwarper). It is quieter then the 360. I bought the card reader. I have multiple screens for multi screen gaming with friends. I love co op.

(easy to move)
Free online
not having to buy 8mb cards anymore.

D) no rumble :(

Things that would have been nice:

A usb to ps2 controller thingy in the box. or better yet...
A ps2 connection on the box for those that still have wireless ps2 controllers for multi play.
A hdmi cable in the box, or at least component cables.
Ability to output audio over hdmi and optical (like the 360)

Ps2 games that are lan:
atv2
atv3
heroes of the pacific
hot wheels stunt track
mtx mototrax
Socom
Tony hawk
Twisted Metal.

Does anyone know any other lan games? What are some good game demos or good games? Are there any sci fi rpg's? Is there any story mode co op games?

I love it except for the fact I cannot get it to play any 720p game in 1080i. Please tell me that I am doing something wrong. Is there a thread out there that can show me what to do? I looked and I could not find one. I find it impossible to believe that I can play ps2 games upscaled to 1080i but I am stuck playing Madden for the PS3 in 480p.

Other than that, I love it. I got TVersity working on it last night and it streams the video quite well.

I don't think anything is wrong with it, I just think it's too hot in your room.

25C is 77F right?

Yeah, that's way too hot.

The PS3 fans turn on after 75F. Under that, it's pretty quiet.

And under room temp (72F) it's dead silient.

Try lowering the temp in your room!

That stinks..yes, you are one of the people who have a 480/1080I only tv.
Hopefully... like someone posted...Sony will have a firmware update to fix this..but I kinda think they won't. That tv is pretty old technology..is it not? Are you thinking about upgrading in the future?. The newer models perform alot better and prices keep coming down. At least you have 1080I for blu-ray viewing.

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 but I'm in the same boat as you--no 720p input for my TV. I'm in utter disbelief that Sony hasn't fixed this yet, let alone that they allowed it to happen in the first place. Anyway, I have a question: what exactly do the 480p PS3 games look like? I mean, I know what 480p PS2 games look like. I know what 1080i 360 games and upscaled Xbox games look like. I'm just having a hard time picturing a game programmed in HD playing in 480p. The games must still look better than PS2 games, right? Or does the resolution loss mask the next-gen gains? Does it look like a more-detailed picture that's been blurred out? I'm just trying to decide if I want to bother with the PS3 yet. I'd be using it as a Blu-Ray player primarily due to the current lack of games anyway but I'd like to at least be able to play Resistance if it doesn't look like complete garbage.

They look better than the PS2 but if you compare them to the HD versions they look like crap.

I found a petition you can sing on the Playstation boards.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693

What blows my mind is they found a way to make the PS2 games play in 1080i on the PS3 but not the 720p games.

Just purchased last weekend. Love the price drop and 5 free BluRay disks. Sure it did not come with an HDMI cable but I have those already so no biggie. The usb is industry standard so I will pick up a longer one this week. I love the weight, fit and finish of the machine. I am sure the majority of the weight comes from the internal power supply but it gives the unit a "more than a toy" feel. Piano black matches my speakers finish and complements the home theater. I have been playing Ridge racer 7 for a few days and the PS3 just runs great. I do not have it in my AV cabinet as it would get too hot. It is very quiet an is a great addition to my current home theater gear. The reason I purchased the ps3 was to complement the projector at 1080p. Planet earth= incredible!

My current video gear.

Epson Home Cinema 1080
Dalite 110" cinema vision
DVDO iScan VP-20 with ABT deinterlacer add-on
OPPO 981 HD
Comcast HD with fire wire out to PC
HTPC pushing Meedio
10+TB media server on LSI Megaraid 150-6 in Raid 5
Panny VHS (yeah I know)
And now my PS3 with extra controller and remote.

Do you think I should output 1080i from the PS3 and let the processor do the heavy lifting and send it to the projector? I get no gaming lag from the DVDO unit BTW.

Hey everyone,

Short time lurker first time poster...

Just picked up a PS3 today and got it all hooked up. Must say this thing looks so sleek next to my xbox elite (but my white hd dvd add on kinda throws it off :) )

This is a slick looking system! I bought this mainly as a Blu Ray drive but I play games too..mostly it was an excuse to get another system :D

I found out really quickly there are some differences between my xbox and my new ps3

ps3 has ridiculously short usb to controller cord...I've been spoiled on my plug and charge xbox cord.

internal power supply= :) no friggin brick! love it.

did I mention this thing is slick?

love all the extra slots for SD/CF/memorystick and the fact that switching out the HD is IN THE MANUAL! How cool is that? Also, I love the USB as always

Just bought the onkyo HTSR800 and still getting that all hooked up but I'm sure it will sound fantastic. The only thing I didn't realize is it doesn't look like I will get 7.1 from the PS3 from that receiver. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

While others have mentioned the controller is light...I really think I like it! I love the x360 setup as well, but I am an original enthusiast of the PS1 so it was like coming home to a good friend again! (I skipped the PS2/Xbox era...what was I thinking?)

The cost was a bit higher than I had hoped for...but hey, my xbox elite + hd dvd drive set me back for more! I take it as getting a console for free with my blu ray drive!

Now I just have to buy a game! I couldn't decide today

I had a mitsubushi ws55411 that was 480p/1080i and the 720p games such as resistance and motostorm looked as good or better than ps2 480p games. I just upgraded to a panasonic th58p-750 plasma (1080p) and realized that they really do look like crap compared to what they can potentially look like. If you can afford to splurge on a 1080p plasma it will literally blow your mind how friggin good blu-ray and 1080p/i games look on the ps3. I have a 360 as well that I love but the PQ doesnt compare to the ps3 via hdmi. It made me feel like I had just been given the gift of sight after being blind for my whole life.

Just picked up this slick-a** machine yesterday. I had been on the fence between ps3 and 360 for many months, but after hearing how many hardware issues the 360 continues to have *in addition to* RRoD, my decision was made. Bioshock will just have to wait.

I managed to convince my better half that the machine was worth picking up for blu-ray. Even though I had meant that as just an excuse, now that I've seen blu ray movies in action I think it's the best feature of the box.

Very easy to set up. After downloading the firmware updates I was ready to go!

I'm not sure what's going on with other people's boxes, but mine runs very quiet. It's possible there may be different components from different sources that might account for the variety in the sound put out by the fan.

I'm still trying to figure out how best to optimize the display for PS2 games, but the high-def stuff looks amazing (the only game I own so far is Super Stardust HD). Of course, I might just be trying (in vain) to get my PS2 games to look "next-gen." I've been playing through the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo over and over and marvelling at the crispness of it all. Backgrounds in the Heavenly Sword demo show how large a role visual *detail* will have in this generation.

I also have a painfully unhip audio question. I have an old analog receiver (Onkyo ca. 1995) that I run everything through. My question is this: does it make any difference (delay-wise or quality-wise) whether I run AV cables directly from the PS3 to the receiver or if I instead just use the TV->receiver audio connection for PS3 audio? So far, I haven't noticed any real difference.

Did I mention the PS3 is seriously sexy?

I just got this machine last night and very impressed. I had few questions I was looking for answers. I'm hoping some guru can help.

1) When web surfing some video clips I try to play say it needs "RealPlayer version X" or some other media player plug-in. Is it OK to download it and will the PS3 be able to run it?

2) When navigating the XMB it seems too sensitive, often flying by the item I am trying to pick or trying to move just one notch down to the next selection can be tricky. Is there a sensitivity adjust? I say the one for the mouse already and put that on slow, but is there anything else for the remote?

3) Is there any way to switch applications (ie. web surfing to show pictures and back again) without completely exiting that but just "suspend" it? For example, if I have multiple windows open when surfing, I want to be able to switch to pictures/music/dvd and then go back and not lose all my windows. Is this possible?

Thanks for your help!

I've just joined the club! Set my 60gig Aussie model up on the weekend with minimum hassles. Running the picture via HDMI into a Panny 42PV60H and sound via optical into a Yamaha RX-V1500 with Paradigm 5.1 system. Connected wirelessly at an average of 85-90% with Netgear RangeMax WPN824 router in a separate room about 15 feet away. "My" seat is about 10 feet from the screen and I must admit I wasn't as "wowed" by the PQ as I thought I'd be, watching POTC II at 1080i that was chosen automatically. I've since changed the settings to 720p and will see how it goes. The sharpness and colours were great but maybe I need a bigger screen at my seating distance to get the full benefit.
I love the media streaming options with video, pictures and especially music. The menu's were easy enough to navigate and entering details with the onscreen keyboard was similar to the Toshiba HDD DVD player I have, so no real problems but not the friendliest way to enter data. Nevermind, today's trip to the PC store fixed that - a Logitech (PS3) keyboard now makes life a bit easier!
I'm not much of a gamer but I'll probably grab a few road racing games like Gran Turismo and V8 Supercars (it's an Aussie thing) if/when they come out.
Enjoying the experience so far.
Prior to my purchase (5 months in the making) I read pages upon pages of the stuff you guys write on forum. Thanks heaps, it was very helpful.
Cheers!

Well, I got my PS3 and set it up a few days ago. I've had a few surprise disappointments. If there are any fixes for these problems please share.

First, I wasn't able to play until the joystick was charged. Then I noticed that it lost its charge very quickly. With the 360 or Wii, I just switch the battery. With the PS3, I cannot play until it charges. The USB cable that was included was only 3 feet long. I don't have a longer one, but next gen wireless is supposed to mean no wires.

Second, I noticed that my display was showing RFOM in 720p... Why? I thought it was supposed to display in 1080i at least. Well, I googled and discovered that this wasn't the case. That very few PS3 games will actually have 1080i resolution. The bigger surprise was that it doesn't upconvert them anyways.

Third, dashboard... The PS3 dashboard is very basic and easy to navigate, but if this is to act as the sole control panel for the console, perhaps it should have some better visual cues. I have yet to find a background image that allows me to read the menus, and I'm pretty sure you cannot change text color. My opinion is that they should flat out steal the idea from M$. We all know thats what M$ would do.

Fourth, PSstore. With the catologue of games that Sony has, I consider it a slap in the face that they haven't had a better response to Nintendo's VC and M$'s Arcade. The day I came home with my PS3, I was expecting to download a game or movie to tide me over until a few of the releases I was waiting for come out. I absolutely didn't expect their catologue to be so small. In fact, when I asked for a 80g PS3 at the store, the clerk said "why?". I said I have everything else, and I want the HD for DLC. I also noticed that the downloads take about 3X longer then they should. It takes me well under 2 hours to download a 1.3GB game on XBL. It took me six hours to download NGS (900MB~) for PStore.

I won't consider this a complaint yet, because a fix is in the works, but... I bought the 300 and Freedom Writers on Bluray. Both were encoded in MPEG-2. That means that the 300 that is available on PPV via comcast for $3 has the same quality encoding as the Bluray. I know that they are moving over to AVC and VC-1 encoding, but I'm starting to wonder if the Bluray will even outperform Comcast. And I hate to say it, but the videos on Xbox Live have better encoding and look better.

Well those are some of my initial impressions. I had to do a little venting on the internet somewhere because I really think that Sony has to address some of these criticisms. I bought the PS3 thinking that it is more powerful then the 360. It may be, but I now think that the PS3 has a lot to learn from the Xbox 360. If one thing is certain, Microsoft and Nintendo brought their A-game.

For the most part, I'm fairly impressed with my PS3.

I don't much care for the controller compared to the Xbox 360's, but, the PS3 has proved to run much quieter, and suffer from no freezing or hardware failure whatsoever. (A big deal to me considering my fourth 360 is being repaired right now). I'm not so keen on the online service or the menu system either, Xbox 360's is much more intuitive. Then again, Xbox Live also demands a fee.

The feature that initally excited me the most is probably the one that has disappointed me the most; Blu Ray. I'm not that impressed with the image quality compared to my Oppo 970HD. It is not that Blu Ray doesn't look good, it is just that after seeing how beautiful standard DVDs look on my plasma with a nice DVD player, it is not all that impressive.

I love all the features the system has, and the upcoming fall releases should be wet the appetite of those of us with PS3s that are waiting for some really good games. I'm especially excited for Heavenly Sword; the demo was really cool, albeit short.

First, I wasn't able to play until the joystick was charged. Then I noticed that it lost its charge very quickly.

Sounds screwy. Your controller should have come charged. Additionally, after charging it should last you quite a while (I didn't need to recharge mine for a few days of long play sessions). I think Sony claims something like 30hrs of charge. My experience has been about that.

very few PS3 games will actually have 1080i resolution. So far, this is standard. From what I understand it is HIGHLY unlikely that any game this generation (360 or ps3) will ever be able to play in NATIVE 1080i/p. Let alone do so without hitches in framerate or screen tearing. All the games that claim 1080i/p are upconverted.

I have yet to find a background image that allows me to read the menus, and I'm pretty sure you cannot change text color. Totally agree. This would be an easy and much appreciated fix.

The day I came home with my PS3, I was expecting to download a game or movie to tide me over until a few of the releases I was waiting for come out. I absolutely didn't expect their catologue to be so small. Hate to say it, but anyone else spending $500-plus dollars should have done his/her research first. You should have known this was the case before your purchase.

I also noticed that the downloads take about 3X longer then they should. It takes me well under 2 hours to download a 1.3GB game on XBL. It took me six hours to download NGS (900MB~) for PStore. This sounds like your home connection. Nothing takes even remotely that long for me, even while downloading in the background.

And I hate to say it, but the videos on Xbox Live have better encoding and look better. Sort of true, but PSN has yet to impliment online movie downloads. We have no idea what sort of encoding those will include (unless you judge them by their 1080p movie trailers). Your issues with Blu-Ray have more to do with individual releases and distributors' encoding rather than with the format as a whole (and very little to do with the ps3).

Well I get around 30 hours battery charge, if you lose your charge quickly either you are not fully charging it or you have a bad battery that can be replaced under warranty.
Also you can charge your controller on most anything with a USB port, I've used both my computer & my DirecTV HD-DVR.

I have yet to find a background image that allows me to read the menus, and I'm pretty sure you cannot change text color.

You can use anything you want for the background, find a pic or solid color you like load it on your PS3 & select it as your background.

I also noticed that the downloads take about 3X longer then they should. It takes me well under 2 hours to download a 1.3GB game on XBL. It took me six hours to download NGS (900MB~) for PStore.

Yea you must have a very slow internet connection or a bad router or something else.
Mine is set up wirelessly on a 1meg DSL line & I'm much much faster than you are!

Sorry it is more powerful than the 360 but the PS3 has only been out 9 months & there is some polishing that needs to be done but improvements are coming.

What does Sony have to learn from Microsoft & Nintendo?
Microsoft has never made a profit on their game consoles & won't in the near future & 30% of their 360's have the red ring of death!
Microsoft has a lot to learn from Sony!

I don't want Sony learning from Nintendo either.
While releasing a "Next Gen" console that was basically a game cube with a new controller made them profitable immediately it's still last gen graphics & gimmicky & won't have the longevity of the PS3 or 360 especially if they don't start releasing more games.
Nintendo are fools for keeping the supply down on the Wii, they need to sell all they can before people figure out what it won't do.

I just got mine this thursday and i'm very happy with it. it's soo quiet when compared to my 360.

why can't the demo install itself after download? add the install time into the overall download time.

what about background download while watching blu-ray or with the system off, like the 360?

Agreed, these 2 things drive me nuts. Seem like an easy fix for Sony, the cell processor should have no problem with it.

Browser isn't the best (that stupid "Do you want to run this plugin" bugs on web forums, but not much anywhere else), but perfectly functional. I've often made posts from my PS3 to AVS and a couple other boards.

I already had a 360 and the HD DVD add-on and I've been quite happy with them, but the $100 price-break and the 5 free Blu-rays offer was enough to nudge me over the edge and make me pick up a PS3 (I also got Best Buy to "price match" the free remote offer on Walmart.com). Overall, I have to say I'm quite happy with the purchase -- $500 isn't cheap, but it is definitely a lot of machine for the money.

Although I do plan on picking up a couple games, I wanted a PS3 primarily for its Blu-ray, DVD upscaling, and web browser functionality and I'm pretty pleased with the PS3's performance on those fronts. I do, however, share in the dislike of the following, all of which have been discussed here already:

1) Lack of an infrared port (Even though I got the remote for free, it is annoying not to be able to use my Harmony universal remote)

2) The fact that controller has to be plugged into the console to be recharged

3) The annoying "Do you want to run the plug in?" prompt

4) Not being able to download while the console is off or while you're playing a Blu-ray

5) The fact that demos aren't installed automatically (although that really doesn't bother me that much)

All in all, though, a very impressive piece of hardware.

2) The controller doesn't have to be plugged into the PS3 to charge it. I leave my Moto DVR on 24/7 and I usually plug my PS3 into it to recharge. I have also recharged it on my Blackberry recharger, my computer and my laptop (my laptop is much closer to my chair than the PS3 or DVR so one time when I let the PS3 controller run out of juice I charged on the laptop while playing).

Thanks. I was curious as to whether or not you could do that. I have a spare BlackBerry charger which I'll set up to use with my PS3 controller. Personally, though, I still would have preferred it if the controller took regular batteries.

So finally unboxed my PS3, it's beautiful, hooked up via HDMI, got it online (wireless), box was at 1.51 OS, went to software update - and this thing is updating SLOW-AS-F*CK! It's ridiculous, I am on a cable connection which gets around 20mbps down. My connection is blazing fast - and the download is going about 1% every 45 seconds! It's been 20 minutes and I'm at about 22%. Any ideas?!

First impression:

* Much heavier than I expected
* Started-up without any complications
* I foudn the UI pretty easily to navigate
* I LOVE all the free download demos. In many cases, it is enough of the game for me. So I have about 15 games I that are fun to play a little and I don't need to buy for $60 a peice
* Love the graphics
* The first Blue-Ray movie we watched (Ice Age Meltdown, with the kids) looked great
* The fan, for our unit, is WAY, WAY too loud. You hear it over the movies. And the unit gets really hot, really fast
* Either the built-in Wi-Fi sucks or the Sony Network sucks, not sure which. The connection is constantly signing itself out, making navigation of the store hit-and-miss and requiring a lot of patience downloading content
* I really like most of the racing games with the great graphics (have so far tried Ridge Racer 7, GT HD Concept, Dirt and Motorstorm), but I wish there was a game with the same level of graphics but had a rookie mode for my little kids that was as forgiving as the older platform racing games. My kids are too young (and my wife has no patience) to master drifting, for example, without which most of these games quickly become frustrating.
* I wish there were more kid/family-oriented games. That is one of the reasons, I think, the Wii is so successful. So far the favorite game in the household is the Super Rub A Dub game. More like that would be good. In terms of famil politics, my wife accepted the Wii as a "family" purchase but the PS3 as a Daddy self-B-Day present only because of the lack of family-appropriate content. That's a big missed market opportunity.
* They need a lot more, a lot better Blue Ray discs. There are very, very few I would actually want in my permanent collection. The HD collection isn't any better, but that's not the point.

Overall I really like it but I may still return it because of the fan and poor wi-fi/network issue. I have several weeks to decide and I play to experiment with the fan issue by temporarily taking it out of the cabinet and putting an external fan directly near it. I want to see if the core issue is heat or a rogue fan and whether there is a point in sending it in or replacing it... On the wi-fi issue, I emailed Sony tech support about the issue and three days later I get an email back basically saying I should call the 800 phone support # for any assistance. That sucked. What was the point of email support if days later all they are going to do is point you to the same phone queue you could have gone to from the start?

Just FYI if you didn't know about it before, Sony's PSN Privacy Policy is pretty bad as it pretty much reports about everything you have on your home network + all of your usage, movies you watch, games you play.

If you have issues with this you might want to double check on this with them as I have personally had problems with this.

Taken from PS3 North America PSN Privacy Policy you had to agree to:

Collection of Non-Personally Identifying Information Through PSN
SCEA may also collect information such as your IP address, IP address-related information, network configurations, your network devices, peripherals, USB devices, plug-ins and monitors, information from your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system unit and information about how you use PSN and your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system unit, including, for example, downloads, game activity (including game title name and length of play), forum postings, game profile, rankings and presence on Friends list or block list (collectively, “passive information”). This type of information will be collected even for offline gameplay. SCEA may also place cookies on your PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system unit’s hard drive. Cookies are bits of electronic information that keep records of the places you have visited on PSN and to keep track of your purchases on PSN.

We may use your personally identifying information and records for defense in a lawsuit, investigation or other action if your personally identifying information, records or profiles are relevant to the lawsuit, investigation or action.

We may also disclose your personally identifying information to other Sony Computer Entertainment companies, Sony affiliates and certain third parties that we have engaged to assist us in providing the PSN service to you, including facilitating online game services, including customer services, or maintaining our database records. 1) the fan on mine is SILENT. I hope its just because you have it enclosed in that cabinet, try letting it get some fresh air and see what happens.

2)The built in Wi-Fi works fine, however when I first got mine it was doing what you describe. Try disabling broadcasting on your wireless router. That solved it for me. Curious though, I re-enabled broadcasting recently and haven't been logged out once, I wonder if a FW upgrade fixed it.

I've had mine for about a week now and can't stop looking at it lovingly :D Well, the lady doesn't like that so much...

Anyway, I encountered the first lock-up last night. I'd just put a PS2 disc (Ratchet & Clank) in, turned away for a few minutes and came back to a black screen. I was able to eject the disc by pressing the button on the console but that was it. No response to anything else on the console or the controller, even the PS key. I ended up switching the power switch on the back of the console. Should I worry about this?

Another concern is, my console is sitting on a shelf with open air around it. However, I noticed the exhausted air from the right side vent feels very warm. Is it normal for the PS3 to run that warm?

Yes, but it would be nice to not have to -- Bluetooth is technologically superior, but given that infrared is almost universally used for remote controls, an infrared port would have been nice.

Not sure how else to recharge (and at least it CAN recharge)

By recharging a removeable battery.

Can your PC download files while its off?

No, but my Xbox 360 can since its last firmware update. Hopefully a future PS3 firmware update will include that function.

I've got mine lauch day here in Europe and have been a gamer since the Nintendo 16bit, Sega Mega Drive era.

I'm not a fan boy by all means, cause i have a 360 and Ps3 and have had Sega, Nintendo (Wii is overhyped to, to mine opinion). I just love gaming and want the most fun console.
But i'm totally not impressed (yet) with the PS3.
As far as gaming is concerned you're better of with a 360 (until Jak & Daxter, MGS4, Killzone2). Think Bioshock, Halo3, Gears Of War, PGR3, even Kameo.

I bought it mainly for the blu-ray and that is its sole purpose for the moment.
Beautiful machine, check
Future Proof, check
Good games, not that many.

I dont understand the "lack of games" comments.
For every Gears on XBOX360, there is a Resistance
For every Halo3, there is a Warhawk
For every Forza2 there is a Formula 1
How many games can a person play at 1 time?
I guess what I am saying is every console will have exclusives, and just as
some PS3 owners wish they could play Bioshock, some XBOX owners wish they could play Heavenly Sword.
But, having 2 360's and 2 PS3's and a Wii, the PS3 is easily the most feature laden, smoothest running of all three, by a wide amount.

(I also got Best Buy to "price match" the free remote offer on Walmart.com).

Interesting. They must react differently in different markets. When I read online about the Walmart deal I tried going to Walmart but they had never heard of the deal. I then showed them it on their own website and they said it was a web special only and not possible in any store purchase, at theirs or any other location. I then asked if they could just match their online offer and they refused. I called a couple other local Walmarts and they all said the same -- I could only get that deal online. I then tried Best Buy and they wouldn't honor it because, they said, they didn't match online pricing and since it wasn't offerred at the stores locally it didn't count...

I am new to HDTV's and gaming. Just got the green light from the better half to purchase a PS3. Need some help determining the best way to connect to my current setup:

Sharp 52inch LCD - One month old
Onkyo TX-SR304 Home Theater Amp
PC with wireless router

I am thinking HDMI from PS3 to TV
Digital audio from PS3 to Onkyo
PS to PS3 via ethernet or wireless to PS3 - which is better?

Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks!
