SirDrexl 01-09-10, 08:22 PM Unlike many other devices, with the PS3, you have to choose the type of video output in the interface. In this case it's the AV multi out. Have you done that?
Try resetting the video settings. With the system off, hold down on the power button for a few seconds until it comes on. See, if he had it hooked up to his TV but used a different type of video connection, you have to change it on your set.
Khymera 01-09-10, 08:39 PM Thank you good sir.
Never having set up a PS3 before, I never would have gotten that. The screen started showing some larger green flickers while the PS3 kept beeping. I released the power button, pressed it again, and actually got a displayed message telling me to plug in the controller and press the PS button.
Oddly, when I plugged in the controller, the TV went back to "No Signal," but I reset the PS3 and got it going again. It seems to be working now--hopefully it will be able to keep the signal.
Thanks again. The amount of time I've been struggling to fix this is frankly embarassing, and you just fixed it in two minutes. Cheers.
aaltmann 01-10-10, 01:49 AM I just bought the PS3 Slim and I have a Linksys WRT600N Dual Band Wireless. I want to connect the PS3 to the 5GHz band but when I scan for networks on the PS3, it doesn't find the 5GHz, just the 2.4GHz. The 5GHz is set up with WPA2 while the 2.4 is WEP but that seems to be the only difference.
Is there some setting(s) that I need to change on either the Linksys or PS3 to make this work?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm not sure, but I think the PS3 only has a 2.4ghz/G interface. Which, if true, would explain why it cannot see the 5ghz.
The router only offers WEP on 2.4ghz/G?

Bummer if that is the case but that would make sense.
You can change the security to WEP and WPA on the router. I have the 2.4 set to WEP because I have another piece of equipment that requires it. I did try changing the security 5GHz with no luck.
Thanks for your post.
aa025620 01-12-10, 02:51 PM Hawgfin, I think I am seeing something similar to your issues. I recently upgraded my Pioneer VSX-1015TX to the Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH. I am going HDMI 1.3 from all components to my AVR. Everything seems to be working ok, EXCEPT, the sound from games is very screwy. (Modern Warfare 2 and Burnout Paradise) I have tried setting everything to bitstream and everything to PCM, unchecking all PCM and 7.1 etc. When I play MW2 I get sound, however, it is only two channel. No matter what I do to the receiver it will not come out of two channel. Even selecting different simulated surround sound modes it still will not put anything to the other speakers, it's weird. I can hear some faint constant static in the center and rears, but no sound. If I play Burnout Paradise, I get some kind of surround, however, some of the track seems to be missing, for example, when you do a burnout, you can see the wheels spinning but there is no audio of the wheels screeching, etc. Very frustrating as key voices and things in some of these games are critical to gameplay.... it makes sense about the blank channels, the receiver lights up as if it IS getting signal to these speakers but nothing is coming out and may be the reason that none of the AVR settings seem to change any of the sound, in reality it is switching modes, but it is outputting blank sound.
So are we saying that this is a problem with the PS3, I guess the fix is to use Optical for game sound and HDMI for movie sound? My brother in law is picking up the new slim soon, going to have him bring it over and see if there is any difference.
I'm having a problem getting audio from my surround sound when hooking up my PS3. I recently sent my PS3 in for repair in which the surround worked before. I got it back yesterday, hooked it up and no surround sound. I have and HDMI cable from TV to DVR and an HDMI from TV to PS3. The surround worked fine when using a standard DVD player, but now it's not working with using the PS3. Does anyone know if I am missing something here or have any ideas?
Thank you in advance for your time and help!
I have a problem since I bought a AV Receiver(Sherwood R-872): When I play a DVD on my PS3, the skins are blue. I can't figure out why this happens and I have been through the settings three times. It doesn't happen when I play a DVD or video files from the harddrive and it doesnt happen when I jank the hdmi cable from the AV Receiver and plug it directly into the TV.
Has anyone an idea what it could be?

Is the DVD an Avatar bootleg? ;)
It sounds like a problem with the BD/DVD video output format not matching. Check the setting where you have a choice between RGB and YCbCr. Change that from auto and try each one. Otherwise, it could be something in the receiver.
jkcheng122 01-18-10, 06:29 PM also try plugging the PS3 in other HDMI ports.

Still seeing smurfs.

Unfortunately, this isn't the solution:(
Thank you both for thinking though:)
So I finally got a Playstation 3 for my Panasonic G10 plasma, and while Blu-rays look incredible on it, I've been having issues when playing regular DVD movies.
I've located the problem to the PS3's Upscaler setting. If I leave Upscaler set to "Normal," the PS3 will upscale the DVD to 1080p; however, the video will also be framed with slight black bars on all four sides (I'm talking about a black bar that's maybe an inch wide on all sides). Furthermore, there is a distracting vertical line on both the left and right sides of the screen.
If I set the Upscaler to "Off," the PS3 outputs the DVD at 480p, and the black frame and vertical lines are gone. A tiny bit of the image's edges are cropped, which probably explains why the black bars are gone.
Shouldn't my PS3 be able to upconvert to 1080p without leaving an annoying black frame around the whole image? The upconverted 1080p image looks a tad sharper than the 480p image, so I want to watch it at 1080p; but, I don't know if I can live with the distracting black frame and vertical lines.
I've posted images of both settings below. You can't see the black bars since I foolishly took the photos with the lights off, but notice two things: On the 480p image, look at the Ferris wheel on the left -- you can notice how it's been cropped a little bit. And on the 1080p image, look at the right side and you can see the annoying vertical line I'm talking about. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks guys!
JayMan007 01-29-10, 11:11 AM I just updated the firmware on my "fatty" PS3 (40GB).
I used to be able to show pictures (streamed from PC), then press the PS button, and select a music playlist. This would allow for background music during a slide show.
This no longer works, after the upgrade. -It's been a while since my last firmware update, but this used to work.
Now when I try this, the music will start, but the pictures stop, and it has the "earth" screen saver.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to get this working again?
Thanks,
Jay
ratcheer 02-02-10, 10:59 AM My PS3 is a 2-year old 80 GB model with 3.15 system software installed. My son is unable to connect to Playstation Home network and it keeps throwing up a dialog that he needs to update to version 1.32. When I tell him to ignore that warning, it just gives it, again and again. Well, 1.32 is over 3 years old.
What is going on? And, what do we need to do to get on Home? We have used it before, and, as far as I know, our software has never been that old.

I think 1.32 is the version of Playstation Home, not the normal firmware update.

Yes, I was finally able to determine that and I installed it, successfully. I do think that their info dialog should have been more informative, though.
Thank you,

I recently bought a Pioneer VSX-1019 receiver and a new 55" Samsung LED TV (120hz) with Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 speakers. So far it's working and sounding great, but I tried playing a game on the PS3 today and although it looks amazing, it became slightly choppy during fast gameplay (assassins creed II).
It never did that with my old sony receiver and Samsung LCD TV (60hz).
The PS3 is connected to the receiver with HDMI. I'm not sure if it's a setting on the PS3 that isn't right or if I need to change something on the Pioneer reciever.
I thought the 120 hz would improve gaming, but right now, something isn't right.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
So far my research is telling me to change the settings on the TV by turning on Game Mode and maybe turning off the 120hz. I will have to play around with the settings on the TV and see if that helps.
SirDrexl 02-05-10, 06:15 PM You mean the motion interpolation? Yeah, I would turn that off because it will cause input lag.
If the framerate is choppy, are you certain that it's not the game itself? I remember that the first AC had framerate problems with that on the PS3, but I don't know about the sequel. Try something like Wipeout XL (if you have it) and see if that has issues.
Trintar 02-15-10, 02:09 PM I recently bought a Panasonic BT200 and am trying to get my PS3 to play audio through it, but it seems to be leaving out the center channel (I can't hear voices in videos or gameplay, or else they are extremely quiet). I have an HDMI going from my PS3 to my tv (Panasonic S1), and then an optical from my tv to the surround sound. I've tried variations of bitstream vs. linear PCM as well as manually selecting the different sound output options, but can't seem to find the right combination. Any ideas?
jkcheng122 02-15-10, 02:14 PM I would really advise you to return the BT200 and get a packaged system that has an actual receiver rather than one with a Blu-ray player built-in with very limited input options. It'll sound better, have more flexibility, and give you better future upgrade options.
Trintar 02-15-10, 02:25 PM Yes, I'm beginning to see that now. I'm going to look into that this week. Any particular brand/model or setup you would recommend that isn't terribly expensive?
SirDrexl 02-15-10, 02:27 PM It also sounds like the TV is just passing the left and right front channels over optical. Perhaps the TV can only accept 2-channel audio over HDMI, and when you feed it higher, it drops all but the front L&R? See, it would have to convert the lossless PCM on the fly to DD or DTS so it will work with optical, and I really doubt it does that. You may have to just connect each source to a receiver rather than trying to pass it through the TV, or connect optical from the PS3 if the TV has an optical input.
Most TV's limit optical out to 2 ch when the source audio is not from the TV itself.
Ex: outside 5.1 audio source to one of the TV's inputs = limits optical out to 2 ch
Ex: 5.1 audio from one of the TV's own tuners = optical out as 5.1 ch
jkcheng122 02-15-10, 03:14 PM So would changing the setting on this PS3 HDMI Audio Output to Bitstream solve the problem for OP?
OP: Onkyo is one brand I know that usually have HTiB sets with a true receiver. $400ish should be fine, I'm not sure though if at that price though whether it'd have HDMI inputs. You don't necessarily need the receiver to be able to decode lossless audio formats since the PS3 can do that.
Trintar 02-15-10, 04:18 PM Thanks for all of the replies. I had a feeling that the TV was only outputting 2ch since I had to manually add the options of Dolby or DTS. I tried changing it to bitstream and various combinations to no avail. I'm nearly positive that it's the 2ch problem. I'll try to figure out a way to replace it (not sure if I can take it back now, it is probably too late) and I'll check out Onkyo products. Thanks again!
jkcheng122 02-15-10, 05:28 PM some HTiB sets at Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfield.com/g_315950/Surround-Sound-Systems.html?c=4&tp=6419&avf=N&nvpair=YCNumber_of_Speakers|6++&nvpair=YCDVD_Player|No). Personally I'd go for the Denon/Klipsch set if you can return your current set and add a bit of money.
If not, from what I read on the sets the Onkyo at $350 you will not get lossless audio on Blu-rays and the HDMI only supports video. You'd still need optical cables for audio. The Sony set is fine and may even have some Bravia Sync features to work with your PS3, I just personally don't like Sony for speakers.
Trintar 02-15-10, 06:44 PM How would this (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_580HT5200B/Onkyo-HT-S5200.html?c=4&tp=6419) do?

Also doens't allow for lossless audio.
SirDrexl 02-15-10, 07:01 PM Frankly though, at that price level I wouldn't worry about lossless audio. I think you need a better receiver and speakers to appreciate the difference.
The issue with that unit is that HDMI is for video switching only, so you'd still need to connect optical cables for your sources.

Good point, but I'm guessing at below $500 for entire audio system lossless still better than no lossless right? Probably really difficult to tell the difference at that quality level. I usually recommend people asking me for audio advice to budget $500 for receiver and $1000~$1500 for speakers. You simply can't expect $400~$500 systems to give you the same impact for audio as a $1200~$1500 flat screen will give you for video.
Trintar 02-16-10, 01:41 AM I quite agree. Realistically though, anything over, say, $800 - $1000 is out of my range. I'd like to find a nice balance of cheap and effective. I don't know too much about surround sound as it has never really been in my budget until recently. I'm not even quite sure what lossless is (I'm assuming non-lossless will compress the audio to make it smaller or more user-friendly). Really, I just want to run my PS3, DVD player, Blu-Ray player, and PS2 into a receiver via HDMI and composite (PS2) and get an acceptable sound for the money I put into it. Does that help give you a better idea of what I'm looking for? If there are many good reasons to spend the $1200+ that you're suggesting, I'd be willing to hold off and just use my tv speakers for now, but like I said earlier, I'm not that educated in this area.
Thanks again for the replies, I do appreciate it very much!

This combo (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_700HTG5/Denon-and-Klipsch-Home-Theater-Bundle.html?c=4&tp=6419&avf=N) is a pretty good deal and if you are going to upgrade from your current set I'd get this. It's a pretty nice entry set that also allows you to upgrade parts individually later down the line so you don't have to drop a ton of money at once.
EDIT: With that many devices, a true receiver would help managing them much easier. How are each of them connected now?
As for lossless audio, yeah it is basically uncompressed audio ala CD Audio vs MP3. It comes in 3 formats: Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD: Master Audio. One or more of the formats accompany most Blu-ray movies and sound far better than the lossy formats (Dolby Digital, DTS) found on DVDs. Basically if you're playing Blu-ray movies w/o access to lossless audio, you're not getting the most out of your Blu-ray discs. I'm not sure what format PS3 games use these days.
Trintar 02-16-10, 06:56 PM PS3 and PS2 are connected to my tv and then I have an optical running to my surround sound. I have a DVD player that isn't currently hooked up and will be buying a Blu-Ray player once I sell my current system. I'll probably just use that for DVDs, though, so I'd imagine I'll just have my PS2/3 and Blu-Ray hooked up to the receiver. That Denon/Klipsch looks really nice. I love the Klipsch speakers I have hooked up to my PC right now, so it'd be nice to continue with that brand. I'm going to try to find someone nearby to buy my current system and then I'll have to place an order on that, I think.

You don't really need a Blu-ray player, you have a PS3, one of the best Blu-ray players (certainly the best value) currently available. I'd use the PS3 for DVDs as well and save that money for the Denon/Klipsch combo. I suppose you don't have a cable or satellite box hooked up to the system?
Trintar 02-17-10, 08:47 PM No I don't have a cable box - not much of a tv watcher. As far as blu-ray players, I had heard that it wasn't a good idea to watch DVDs on PS2 and just sort of assumed it carried over to PS3. Not really sure why, I nevereven looked into the matter personally, just kind of went along with it. I'm probably going to put an order in for that Denon/Klipsch combo very soon. Thanks once again for all of your help!
Edit: Just bought it. :) Thanks again for all of your help, I appreciate it.

Not a problem, just passing along the knowledge from others that got me to this point.
I have a PS3 Slim that I bought back on October of 2009. The problem that I have is when I turn off the system with my DS3 sometimes it doesn't shut off. The screen goes blank and the power button keeps flashing. At this time I cannot do anything with the PS3 after this happens. I tried pressing and holding the power button down and it just keeps blinking. The only way for me to power it down is by pulling the power button and after that I can turn it on again.
Are there any other people that have experienced this?

I've had this happen a few times, but this is more like 1 time out of 20 times when I turn off the PS3. I have a slim also.
tomfoolery_79 02-28-10, 04:12 PM My PS3 just started to get finicky about ejecting discs. Pushing the eject button won't eject the disc. It sounds like it's mechanically trying to, but it doesn't work. To get it to eject I have to press and hold the eject button for about 20 seconds to force some sort of override. Any thoughts?
schnurmac 02-28-10, 08:23 PM I repair PS3. I just got going with my console repair business. I amazed how busy I am. I repair YLOD, power supply, laser replacement. Repair all consoles except xbox. DM me if you have any questions.

lovingdvd 03-02-10, 02:11 PM Regarding the PS3 major issue that surfaced where you get locked out of playing games - I read in an article that they recommend not using the PS3 until it is fixed.... Does anyone know if it is still safe to play Blu-rays without the risk of tripping this bug? I'll hold off playing any games until its fixed but in the meantime would like to play some Blu-rays. Thanks.
schnurmac 03-06-10, 10:01 AM Anyone?
Sounds like your drive is failing. You can send it to Sony if your still under warranty. If not they will charge $150-$179 I think they have increased from $150 to the $179 from what someone told me. It will take 3-6 weeks with them.
If not I do repairs on consoles. When you do have a game stuck in it does it still read the disk fine? If you want me to repair it you can ship it to me.
If it still reads disk perfectly the repair will be $120.00 to repair it. I will cover the shipping back to you. Im in Va.

uni_panther 03-06-10, 08:11 PM One of the things that has been bugging me for quite awhile and I can't quite figure out is why is it that hooked up with HDMI when it comes to gaming the PS3 basically tells my AVR that everything is in 7.1 When it comes to movies I can push select and call up the screen that tells me exactly what is going on with audio but why is it on the XMB and in games it just tells me 7.1 all the time. Out of curioisty I hooked up an optical cable and everything was always saying 5.1, XMB and in games. Is this just a quirk of the PS3?
I'm currently only running a 5.1 system but out of curiosity when I want to know what games support what it leaves me in the dark. Is there something glaring that I am missing?

Sony still charges $150 for repairs. I had mine in for valuation if ylod was caused by firmware upgrade. Outcome it was not, told them to ship it back not repaired.

YLOD is not caused by an update. Its caused by years of use and overheating. I recommend to everyone to vacuum the openings at least once every two months. :)
Has anyone experienced ylod on their PS3?
I have followed a guide of taking mine apart, cleaned unit, took off old compound, applied flux, re flowed, re applied new thermal compound. Tested hard drive on friends ps3 and installed the 3.15 upgrade.
Unit will turn on, but no audio/video. Tried the video reset process that is shown online from Sony and others. Still no audio/video?

Read the dm I just sent you.
Plus you cant swap the hdd from one PS3 to another. It will ask you to format it. You will loose all data. Back up your saves regularly if you dont ever want to loose single player game saves. Your online ranks and stats are not affected. They are stored on the PSN.

I have read that it is due to overheating, but I don't believe that is the only cause. And "caused by years of use"? I got the YLOD after 14 months of light use. During that period, I never heard the fan kick into a higher gear. My PS3 was stored out in the open, and the vents were more or less free of dust without ever vacuuming them. So I find it hard to believe that overheating caused YLOD with my console.
PS3's with model # CECHG01 (40g) seems to have more problems than others. There are so many motherboards from this unit for sale on ebay than the other models does say something not good of this revision Sony had made.
uni_panther 03-11-10, 08:22 PM It is well established that the YLOD is from the lead free solder they use on the heatsinks that connect with the motherboard. Depending on how good or bad yours happens to be it could last a long time or YLOD quite quickly. It just depends on luck more than anything. They still use the exact same process and solder for the new slims as far as I know and even though they run cooler they still go through enough thermal heating and cooling to cause a breakdown if there is a structural weakness in the solder. You just don't hear about as many slims as they are newer so unless the solder is extremely weak chances are it will have to go through many more heating and cooling cycles before it gets YLOD if it is going to happen.
Your unit can be perfectly clean and vacuumed on a regular basis and while that is always a good thing it isn't going to keep solder from cracking through normal heating and cooling cycles. Yes you are preventing it from getting hotter and having the fan kick into high and while that certainly will help even a clean PS3 is at risk through normal temperature cycles.
Has anyone been able to get a 1080p signal to work with a pioneer receiver vsx-23txh. i got this from the pioneer support site
My Playstion 3 will output 1080P through the HDMI, but when I set it to 1080P I do not get an image on my Plasma.
For Playstation 3, the 1080P signal is a difference frequency and it need to be at 24Hz(fix, not variable).
There is not an output setting for 1080P frequency change on the Play Station 3. The compatible resolution from PS3 setting are: 480I, 480P, 1080I, and 720P.
Attachments: There are no attachments for this solution.
this is kind of bs, hope someone has a fix for this or that im a idiot, please help
Has anyone been able to get a 1080p signal to work with a pioneer receiver vsx-23txh. i got this from the pioneer support site............
PS3 settings for 24hz can be set to On, Off, or Automatic.
If you bypass the Pioneer and go direct to the TV does it work properly?
Pilot12 03-13-10, 07:07 PM All was well before I upgraded my Panny 720 to a new bigger Panny 1080P.
I'm going PS3>HDMI>RCVR (YAM RX-V3800)>HDMI>TV
When I hooked everything back up and set the PS3 to output 1080P, the PS3 quit outputting the SACD sound. Won't even play the two channel version of the disc. Plays CDs normally with 2.0 and BDs with DD5.1 or whatever I select.
I researched this and other threads and found a history of TVs causing the "PS3 to be confused by the audio capabilities the TV set communicates downstream via HDMI." I pulled the HDMI OUT from the receiver (disconnecting the TV) and the sound immediately returned. I tried downgrading the PS3 display output to 720 and 480, but it didn't work. I found I can simply turn off the TV and the sound comes back and I CAN get sound by using "Pure Direct" on the reciever, but that blanks out the display as well.
Does anybody know of a way to get my full SACD capablity back and leave the TV on at the same time? (And KEEP my new TV) You know what a PITA it is playing/ navigating discs without the display and it's nice having the screen savers to look at.
mmslayer 03-18-10, 11:14 AM The PS3 is connected to an Onkyo TX-SR804 via HDMI. I can't turn the volume down below a certain point and mute does not work. This problem only cropped up as of the latest PS3 system update (3.15). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

i did a quick search and didn't really come up with any definitive solutions.
I was wondering how people were able to hook up their PS3 to a projector that only allowed for VGA?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
out2lnch 03-22-10, 02:37 PM Subydoodie,
I had an old projector that only allowed VGA, so I used a component to VGA cable from Monoprice. If you're using a receiver, no problem, but if you need to connect the male component ends of the PS3 component cable to the male ends of the converter cable, then you need a simple adapter (Monoprice as well). My cable is 20 or 25 ft long and worked great.
I think there are HDMI to VGA converters as well, but I didn't see the point, aside from taking advantage of upconversion of SD DVDs. My proj was so low resolution, I didn't bother.

I was going to suggest trying 480p output until I read you already did that.
There's one more workaround suggested in this troubleshooting section (http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc182427014) of the PS3 SACD FAQ and that's using analog (component video) cables to your display.
If you find any other solution please do share it -- I'm very interested to know!

Check your TV's audio settings and try toggling between Dolby Digital on and off. Also if the function is there, turn off TV speakers. Some TVs have the option of selecting between TV and AMP for audio in the TV's audio settings. Check it out and let us know.
EDIT: What model is your Panny 1080p? Always helps to list this so we can check the manual for you. Yes, some of us are just that bored at work.
I have a friend who has a PS3, with an HDMI cable sending a signal to his television and a Toslink cable sending audio to his receiver. His receiver doesn't have HDMI connections, hence the quirky set-up. He tells me that he's getting snow on the television from the PS3. He didn't have this issue with his cable box set-up the same way.
Can two different signals be used simultaneously from the PS3 under this configuration? I'm thinking he either needs to upgrade to an HDMI receiver or ditch this set-up. If need be, I'll get more details from him (e.g., television model, resolution settings for PS3 and TV, etc.)
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
schnurmac 03-25-10, 01:59 PM Snow tells me it's getting no signal what so ever. Need to check all his inputs are correct on avr and tv. You can't just connect the hdmi and it work. You have to connect the yellow composit first. It will tell you there is an hdmi available and you have to tell it to output hdmi.
jkcheng122 03-25-10, 03:20 PM Snow as in covering the entire screen and can't see video or can see video but very bad pq?
Terminator840 03-25-10, 05:20 PM I have my PS3 connected this way with no problems. The PS3 must not be outputting over HDMI.

Or he isn't set up properly on the receiver and video and audio are on different inputs.
star_man 03-26-10, 12:42 PM My original controller doesn't get much use since I got the dual-shock. Lately I was using it and the left joystick acts really strange playing zuma. Haven't noticed it in other games. Anyone else see this kind of issue?
SHOWTIME07 03-26-10, 01:26 PM I'm having random audio sync issues with my PS3. I'm not the only one. See HERE (http://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-players-recorders/47350-audio-out-sync-ps3.html). This just started recently.
Sometimes when I play a video from my USB HDD, the audio is in sync, other times not...for the same movie. Same happens if I copy the movie to the PS3 internal HDD.
Yet, when I play any of them on my laptop, there is no issue.
It's got to be an issue with the PS3.
I'm wondering if the latest PS3 software update, whenever that was, is causing this issue. Strange that it would suddenly start happening out of the blue for so many.
My video setup is PS3 -> HDMI -> Toshiba 65" DLP
My audio setup is PS3 -> optical -> Onkyo receiver
EDIT: There is no sync issue when I switch audio out on PS3 to HDMI and listen through the TV.
Seems like if I switch the audio out on the PS3 to HDMI, and then back to Optical, it is then in sync.
An old post, but I agree with this fully. I bought my house (moved out of parents' house and bought my first house) back in September of 2007. My living room is about 20 feet wide by 15 feet deep. When buying furniture and gear for my house, I went and got me a 42" LG LCD HDTV. It's beautiful. I have it hanging on the wall on the long edge of the living room with my couch on the opposite wall. It's a perfect distance and the visual quality is great. Initially, my speaker system was a pretty damned good 5.1 system that used to be hooked up to my desktop computer. I had a roommate move in back in the fall of 2008 and he is an audio junkie. He suggested that I get an AVR and build my own speaker system. I had absolutely NO idea how the hell to build a speaker system but he taught me the basics about it and it actually seemed quite easy to do.
So after reading through a ton of posts on the forums here, I wound up getting an Onkyo TX-SR606 AVR for only $300. A GREAT investment and I am super happy with it. For my speakers, I went to Parts Express and looked around for a set of parts I could use to build a good speaker system. I don't have the specifics on hand here, but I got the parts to build a subwoofer, and the five other speakers. The fronts and rears were built using a kit available on Parts Express that included the tweeter, woofer, crossover board, and cabinet. So that is what I used to get myself accustomed to the soldering process and the overall construction of the speakers. For the center channel, I picked up the same tweeter/woofer and parts for the crossover board and built the cabinet myself. Using a black laminate for the case, I was able to build a great looking center channel.
I hooked everything up to the Onkyo, and then hooked up my cable box via HDMI and my PS3 via HDMI. An HDMI cable then connects the Onkyo to my TV. (I love you Monoprice). When I fired it up, I was stunned! The audio is so incredibly good and fills up my living room beautifully. Playing games like MLB The Show, it sounds like I am actually in the ballpark! Metal Gear Solid 4 was jaw dropping both visually and aurally, and when watching Lord Of The Rings I was so amazed that words can't describe my emotions. I was hearing things in movies and songs that I never had heard before. I fired up Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the audio positioning was just stunning.
I ended up spending $300 on the receiver, and combined about $1200-$1500 on the speaker system. (I can't recall the exact price spent). My roommate said that the sound quality and range of the speaker system I built is probably on par with a speaker system I could buy elsewhere that would cost three times the price of what I spent. I had my parents come over and listen to the system and they said that if they didn't spend so much money on a Bose system 10 years ago, they'd have asked me to build them a system. (I know, it hurts me that they bought a Bose system, but they aren't exactly the type of people who do a lot of research before buying something. However, the fact that they've had it for 10 years and have no issues with the system or the sound, at least they have been able to make use of it for the past decade. I guess ignorance is bliss).
So I fully agree with the statement that a system with a receiver in the $500 range and a speaker system in the $1500 range will provide a great audio experience in an average sized room and make all but the most finicky of audio people quite happy. I guess I'm glad that I can't really tell the differences between a really expensive audio system and the system that I have.
star_man 03-26-10, 05:27 PM Does anyone know what the limits are for downloading games from the playstation store? I was thinking that I might download the game again to see if it resolves the controller issue that I only see with this game.

Gotta love Metal Gear Solid 4 (mmmmmm Naomi) on a nice surround rig, that game is literally a movie. Did you get around to calibrating your audio setup? I mean either running the Audissey onboard system or use a sound meter to measure decibels and set distances.

Yup. That was the very first thing I did when I got it set up. :D

Press and hold the power on causes PS3 to resync, so that may help here.

It's a Panny TC-65S1.
I don't find any way in the TV menu to toggle Dolby on and off...
I tried turning off the TV speakers, but that didn't make any difference.
One correction to my OP; I can't hear SACD or REGULAR CDs either one.
The only way the sound from music CDs comes through the sound system is to either turn off the TV or change the TV input away from the PS3 or to select "pure direct" on the amp.
Again, the sound from DVDs and BDs is fine.
I'm going to try splitting the HDMI out of the PS3; one into the amp, the other into a different input on the TV. In other words, it won't be daisy chained. I spose this might cause sync issues with movies, but I can use the original setup for those. I'll report back.
I have my PS3 slim 250 connected to my Denon 3808 via HDMI. In PS3 settings, in Video Settings I have the BD HDMI output set to bitstream, and I manually set the HDMI audio output settings to include all available formats.
So I put in the Blade Runner Final Cut (Disc 1 of 5) which is in TrueHD. However, the PS3 only outputs 640K DD per the info display.
I had read that Warner discs require you to choose DTHD from the popup menu, but this disc seems to have no such options available.
Anyone know what I might be doing wrong here?

Are you having the same problem with any other discs? Also when you hit INFO on the PS3 remote, what does it say for audio codec?
Found info on Blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blade-Runner-Blu-ray-Review/545/) regarding Blade Runner's audio:
After the "Final" cut in TrueHD, the remaining versions are presented in standard Dolby Digital with the "Workprint" being in Dolby 2.0 stereo. Clearly the "Final" version is the standout of the set and is sure to give your home theater a nice workout.
I think only Disc 5 has TrueHD.
Sorry, I said info display when I did mean the displayed info from the info button on the PS3 remote.
Disc 5 is actually the workprint, Disc 1 is the Final Cut, the only one in DTHD.
Forgot one - yes, I do get DTHD from other discs.
jkcheng122 03-27-10, 02:57 PM Forgot one - yes, I do get DTHD from other discs.
Heh I had forgotten which disc is which. Well, since Warner discs do not have a main menu, you'd need to try either pressing the "Audio" button on the PS3 Blu-ray remote (or if you are doing the BT to IR thing, with your universal remote) or go into the pop-up menu to find the audio track option and switch to TrueHD. Since you get it with other discs, your PS3's settings isn't the issue here.
I was afraid of that. The popup menu has no output settings, and the audio button only switches between the film and commentary tracks. Maybe I have a bad pressing...

Odd since I don't recall anyone having any problems and these type of issues usually have multiple cases of people with same problem.
There was this one error where ppl got Disc 1 as their Disc 5.
NOTE: A small number of Blade Runner 5-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition briefcase gift sets and Blade Runner 5-Disc Complete Collector's Editions in the Blu-ray format may contain an incorrect disc #5 labeled The Work Print. In some cases disc #5 does not have the work print content but rather the content of Blade Runner: The Final Cut, which is already included in the collector's set as disc #1. The only way to recognize the error is to play disc #5 and go to the Special Features page. If you see one commentary track by Paul M. Sammon, the disc is correct. If you see three commentary tracks, then they have an incorrect disc. To receive a correct replacement Blu-ray disc #5, please call Warner Home Video at 1-800-553-6937.
Maybe you can try if you have the same issue and your Disc 5 might have TrueHD.
Believe it or not, your reply solved the riddle. Put in disc 5, and just happened to switch to secondary audio at the beginning. The introduction noted it as the "little seen workprint." And I thought, huh...sounds like the same voiceover on disc one. So I put disc one, the Final Cut, back in. And voila...DISC ONE IS THE WORKPRINT TOO! Looks like I got an oddball opposite issue. I guess I'll have to call the WB number you posted.
thanks!!

While not fully solved but at least we found the root of the problem. Good luck with the customer service. :)
Found info about this in the blu-ray.com forums under the Blade Runner title. The thread about the 5th disc replacement program shows a number of people had this same issue just recently, and the folks at Warner are now replacing the disc 1 instead. Saying customer service is shipping them out NQA.

You MAY be able to use the headphones if you don't mind purchasing a few accessories.
First, connect the AV cable you got with the PS3 to the AV Out port at the back of the PS3. Plus, you need to have the latest firmware on the PS3 and turn on Multiple Audio Output (through HDMI and AV Out).
Then you need a connector like this one (http://www.amazon.com/RCA-Female-3-5mm-Stereo-Adapter/dp/B000I98ZM8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1269802223&sr=8-1) and connect the white and red RCA jacks onto that. Then simply connect your headphones to the other side of the connector, and you should be good to go.
star_man 03-28-10, 03:44 PM ...DISC ONE IS THE WORKPRINT TOO
Interesting, sounds like an off-by-one issue during manufacture. I wonder if people are finding other "shift" issues? I guess you can sell your extra blu-ray disc now. Or did WB ask for the disc back?
mcdonaldsecurity 03-28-10, 07:14 PM I will try that. Thanks guys for your help

Go into network on the PS3 X media bar slect network then status. Jot down your IP address it should be like 192.168.1.???. Jot down your DNS #'s. Also write down the mac address, we will use this last. Now manually set up the PS3 network settings. Dont do the easy it auto assigns the IP address. What your going to do is give the PS3 a static IP that never changes. Your router should handle up 50 IP addresses from 1 up to 50. Lets say make it 192.168.1.120 Fill in the DNS numbers you wrote down and any passwords for your network. Now run the test. You should be at NAT 2. If not do this next step anyway. Log into your router from your PC. Enter 192.168.1.1 into your browsers address line. A box will drop down. If you have never set a password for it just enter admin in the password line and nothing in the user line. Go into the tab labeled DMZ this will open all ports to your PS3 only. Enter the address you assigned to the PS3 like this. Mine is 102 enter yours as 120 or what ever you set it to. Now select save.http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/schnurmac/router%20PS3/routerScreenshot2010-03-30at90828AM.jpg
Then go to the tab Qos on you router set up. You are now going to designate your PS3 to be priority on your network when its on and online. You will give it the most bandwidth on your network to decrease lag. First you will need the PS3's mac address you wrote down. Enable Qos then name the device to what ever you want. Set it to high then enter the mac address. I'm confused as to what I need to do on my pages since there is a considerable amount difference between mine and yours.
Thanks for the help
No I dont think I had it mixed up. You look fine for the DMZ if thats the mac address but I would use the IP instead right above it. Now as for the qos its optional. Have you tried to run the network set up on the PS3 yet to see if you get NAT 2?
schnurmac 03-30-10, 08:02 PM I would enable what I have circled and see if you can enter the PS3's IP anywhere or if it will auto fill after you have entered the IP on the DMZ page and hit save. I would leave upstream to auto. Then if you able to add the IP or mac address set the drop down priority to high. I hope this helps.
Anyone familiar with his router setup please chime in.http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/schnurmac/router%20PS3/Picture1.jpg
sub_junkie 03-31-10, 02:28 AM I've also tried assigning ports for PSN; that was what one person over on the Linksys/Cisco forums suggested that I do. But that didn't change my Nat Type either.
I'll call Linksys and or Cisco tomorrow and post back here what they say if they can get my Nat Type to change, just incase someone else is having the same problem that I'm having.
ugabuga 04-01-10, 12:34 AM Hey guys need some help. I purchased Toy Story 1 and 2 on Blu-ray and watched it using the PS3 on my Mits 73C9.
Right from the beginning of the movie I noticed sparkling dots constantly happening! I continued watching but it never stopped. I have never seen this from watching dvds, hd cable, games on the PS3 or 360, even blu-ray rips.
I put in Toy Story 2 and immediately the same thing. I changed the Blu-ray settings for the PS3 to most basic settings( super white off and rgb to limited) which made no difference. Next I swapped the hdmi cable with another one and same issue. I went on the tv settings and toggled 120hz mode off and on, but again no difference.
At this point I was thinking maybe the PS3 drive is failing so i put in Toy Story dvd which came with the blu-ray in the combo pack. No sparkling dots.
Purchased a el cheapo Magnovox Blu player just to test. No sparkiing dots when using that with the same hdmi cable and same port directly plugged into the tv. I guess it is the PS3 GRRRRRR. So weird....
Just played an hour of GOWIII and no issues..... guess time to sell on CL and rebuy a slim ugh
star_man 04-03-10, 01:51 AM I noticed sparkling dots constantly happening! I continued watching but it never stopped.
Seems like an issue with the blu-ray discs for toy story. Did you check the blu-ray forums?
sub_junkie 04-03-10, 11:59 PM ugabuga,
I just tried out Toy Story 1 on Blu-Ray, and it was perfect. Is your HDMI cable possibly going bad, or do you have a loose connection somewhere with it?
ugabuga 04-05-10, 10:38 AM Thanks for the replies guys. I tried 3 different hdmi cables and swapped ports on the tv and same issue. Tested on another Blu player and fine so guess it the bd drive. Weird only happening with blu-rays.
eddy_winds 04-06-10, 11:27 AM Weird only happening with blu-rays.
GOWIII = Blu-ray

As the eddy_winds said GOWIII is a blu-ray so your conclusion is wrong. I have seen cases where new blu-ray discs acted odd. What I did was clean them with a soft-cloth.
Not sure why this happens, perhaps some residue from the manufacturing process of the blu-ray.
auburnfan23 04-06-10, 03:07 PM Yeah sometimes they just wear out over time. May just have to get some new ones sucks that they cost so much..
ugabuga 04-06-10, 05:28 PM Interesting i didnt even think about GOW3.... but i tested the discs in stand-alone Bluray player and they worked perfectly...... Now Im tempted to drop by friends and test on his Slim
star_man 04-06-10, 07:49 PM uga, a search for this issue points to a cable problem.
ugabuga 04-07-10, 11:33 AM I think its defin the PS3 drive at this point. Ive swapped out 3 different hdmi cables, changed hdmi ports on the tv with same result. Simply pluggin same config in standalone Blu player works so it has to be the PS3 drive.
Hey peeps, looking for some info/help. Here is some info...
Equipment
PS3 Slim 150GB
Samsung LN40A550
Problem
So after a year or so of not having a PS3 I got the urge and went out and bought a new one. Got home hooked it up to the tv and it automatically detected and set to 1080p, so far so good. But the problem is that on 1080p, there are red flickering lines all over the screen. Also, the sound seems to cut in and out but not very often. I set the PS3 down to 1080i/720p/480p and everything works fine. So right now I only have it set to display at 720p. I have ran the PS3 on another 1080p LCD and it worked fine.
Ok so as I was just playing around while making this post, it seems to have gone away. I noticed that when I wiggle the HDMI cable at the back of the tv, I can make the picture worse or better, but not perfect. The red lines are gone though. All 3 HDMI ports do this.
I guess my HDMI ports on the tv are messed up. I shouldn't have to wiggle them for good picture. The TV is only 2 years old this month, would you say that it is only my HDMI connections at the back of the tv? Good thing I still got 2 more years of extended warranty on it.
Thanks

Did you use the HDMI connections before the PS3? Sounds like they might just need cleaning. Maybe they are oxidized or just have dust, etc. If wiggling it makes a difference it sounds like they're dirty.
well only on the laptop and thats when the sound goes weird sometimes. should i just use rubbing alcohol to clean them? thanks for the reply btw.
Hi guys,
I have a Sony BRAVIA KDL-46EX700 model. My question is in my PS3 settings. I've connected my PS3 via HDMI cable, but when I try to set the display options, the PS3 automatically sets the video output settings to 480p. When I try to set it customly, it allows me to choose 720p and 1080i, but rejects the 1080p setting. Has anyone else encountered this or is there a problem with my PS3, my unit, or both? :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
zervinb 04-13-10, 06:01 AM ^ ^ ^ ^
That's weird. I have the PS3 Slim connected to a 40EX400 via HDMI (through a receiver though) and it has no problems displaying 1080p. Have you tried using a different HDMI cable or maybe connecting the cable to a different HDMI input on the TV?
Maybe, there might be a setting on the TV which would not be allowing it to receive a 1080p video signal.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried all of the HDMI ports and I don't think it is a setting within the TV. I am using a rather cheap HDMI cable that I got for $12 at Big Lots, but I've read there is no difference in HDMI cables because they are all digital. Is it possible I need a higher quality cable for the PS3 to successfully recognize 1080P from the TV?

Since HDMI 1.0, a resolution of 1080p has been supported, so ideally, the HDMI cable should not be the source of your problem. However, if you can get another cable and try it out, it could be worthwhile. The issue "might" be resolved.
By the way, at least as far as HDMI cables are concerned, there is a difference between "cheap" and "bad". Cheap cables can be of a very good quality too (best example: Monoprice). You could order an HDMI cable from Monoprice and see if that works.

Anyone familiar with his router setup please chime in.
I called Linkys, and they suggested me to call Century Link (they are my ISP). Linksys saw that I had already assigned PSN's port on my router, so there was nothing else that they could do.
When I called Century Link, they told me to go to my modem's set up page. Not the router's page. I just changed the operation mode to bridged or something like that, and that immideatly lowered my NAT Type to Type 2, and open on MW2. Now, I join games in under three seconds, rather than the usual 15-20 seconds before when my NAT Type was strict.
Just thought I should update that.
thedr0ck 04-23-10, 01:08 PM Hey,
First time posting but a long time reader of the forum. Thanks for such a great forum.
My situation:
I just added a PS3 slim to my setup and I am having resolution issues. This might be a PS3 thing or TV thing. But I will try the PS3 angle first.
I have the PS3 attached to the tv thru HDMI. And I had all the default settings (besides HDMI vid/sound toslink). Menu looks great at 1080p. But when I play a game demo that is native 720p the tv stays in 1080 and shows a black border around the game window.
I can deselect the Automatic Video feature and manually 'unselect' 720p which forces the game in 1080. But it is kind of pixelated. I checked my TV settings and the Bravia auto assigned the PS3 (labled playstation3) as a "PC". So I can't change too many settings.
My questions:
Is this the normal situation? Can't the PS3 upconvert better? Or is it up to my TV? As for the TV in PC mode. Is this normal too? Can I force it out of PC mode? Or is there something I can do to set it up correctly. I haven't tried a BR movie yet. But I am hoping it will automaticly go into 1080/24 mode. (crosses fingers)
I am hoping someone out there has a similar setup to me and can shed some light on this.
Thank you all in advance,
D.

The PS3 does not upconvert 720p games to 1080p, I think frame rate will take a hit from doing so. I have the Bravia V5100 TV and the problem is with this TV (not sure if others are like this too) when playing games it does not automatically change the zoom option from Full Pixel to Full, which it does when I'm watching cable TV and the feed goes from 1080i to 720p.
Basically when you are playing games you need to put the TV's zoom option at Full instead of Full Pixel. As for that PC thing with the PS3, you might need to try turning off Bravia Sync.
TwinsPoppa 04-23-10, 02:32 PM I seem to have audio distortion only with Super Stardust HD. All other games seem fine. All audio on the XMB works fine and even going into the main startup screen in Stardust HD too.
However, as soon as I actually start playing (like the first planet) the audio sounds like I have blown speakers.
I have done the following with no change in results:
- Unchecked only DTS 5 ch. in output
- Unchecked DTS 5 ch. & Dolby Digital 5 ch. in output
- All above done with just HDMI out then tried with Multi Chn. out too
- Updated System Software from 3.15 to 3.30 and repeated above changes
Found some posts on the net saying their DEMO version had the problem but mine is the full version.
Its a downloaded game from the PS Store not a bluray disc. Will try to delete the game and redownload it.
Setup:
Launch 60GB PS3 connected to Denon AVR-2310ci which is connected to a Samsung PN58B650. All via HDMI. Speaker setup is currently only 3.1.

You don't want to "force" 1080p from the PS3. What happens is on the back of a game case you will have all the supported resolutions of a game however the majortiy of disc based PS3 games are 720p native. The PS3 doesn't have a dedicated hardware scaler so it does it through software on games that support 1080p upscaling. The problem comes in when games don't support 1080p scaling.
Since you only have 1080p checked in this forced situation if a game does not support 1080p scaling it will choose a resolution it knows it supports, which means it will drop all the way down to 480p and will send a downscaled 480p signal to your tv which will then upscale it back to its own native resolution resulting in a much poorer picture.
Even if a game supports 1080p scaling your tv probably does a better job anyhow and since it will scale everything anyhow you are really just better off letting the PS3 output the game in its native resolution. So just check all the boxes that apply and let the PS3 choose.
Every once in awhile a game comes along that defaults to an upscaled resolution but that is very rare. I have about 40 disc games and only 1 of them starts up in 1080p and it is not native 1080p. The chances of this happening are low and it really isn't a huge deal as it is just scaling at the PS3 rather than the tv, however there are a good number of games that don't support 1080p and you will end up with this 480p downscale, then upscale at the tv situation. So your best bet is just check the resolutions that your tv supports and don't force anything.
jremy510 04-24-10, 12:41 PM Over the last two days, Dragon Age has started freezing and requiring a hard restart. After one restart, the screen was frozen in a crazy, pixelated black-and-white "noise" pattern, with some of the XMB showing through. Is this the video card dying? Is my PS3 living on borrowed time?
SnowSauce 04-26-10, 09:44 PM Heya, this is my first time actually posting in this forum, despite the numerous times reading posts. Recently, i bought a new game for the ps3 and when i started to play it (after pressing new game), after a bit it froze with yellow lights. Although it does seem like YLOD, i believe it is not because it only happens when i start playing a new game and i am able to turn it on and play other games fine. When it dies, it just leaves a dead screen while the ps3 blinks red lights (indicating that it overheated ????). Everytime i play the game again i can get further in the new game cinema. So, I was wondering
A. how could i fix this problem if it is not the YLOD (which i hope is the case)
and
B. Does my ps3 have long to live?
Thanks

You have the beginning stage of YLOD. I repair consoles. It will eventually stay that way after you have played it long enough. I have people bring me their PS3. They tell me they have YLOD. When I plug it in to test it works. I just leave it on till it shuts down. Usually within ten minutes it dies. You can have it repaired or send to sony pay them $150 and wait on your refurbed slim. The repair is not a permanent fix.
SnowSauce 04-27-10, 01:40 AM First of all, thanks for the quick reply. Now that i have no hope of my baby living, i can seek to repair it quickly when it dies. But besides that, my friend plays my ps3 for hours on my other games. Its just the RPG games with big cinema that freezes it. I take fairly good care of my ps3 (wiping the fans and etc from dust) so is it possible that i could just play like the FPS online games that i have without it dying? (those games we play for hours on end with nothing gone wrong)
Thanks
Sucubus 05-02-10, 03:46 PM DLNA error 2101 repaired.
I was getting this error for a few weeks since I got my PS3 slim 250 GB.
It is connected to a Linksys 350N Router wirelessly with a USB external Hard Drive connected to the router.
I read on one forum that I should use the Wireless-G Only Network settings under the Basic Wireless Settings.
Previously, I was using the Mixed settings before as I do have one N type PC in my network.
So far no DLNA errors and I can always access the USB drive (server).
Looking for opinions on this:
My ps3 is in a never ending cycle of turning itself on, staying on for 10minutes or so, then shutting itself off, immediately turning back on (it doesn't even display the standby red light when shutting off, just the blue/green) and rinse and repeat. I have to turn off the back power switch or it would just do this all day long. When i flip the switch on, the system immediately turns itself on (the "on" beep and the light turns from red to blue/green).
No sign of yellow lights, and when it is on for the short duration, everything is accessible and works, been online gaming, chatting with mic, disc insert/eject, etc. Fan speed is normal as before.
I should mention it got a little wet a few days ago along with the controllers from leaving it by a window and a brief storm came through when I wasn't home. When I got home it was on somewhow, maybe from being shorted from the rain I don't know.
Soooooooooo, is it just still wet inside and acting up and I need to be more patient, power supply issue working intermittently, or are my contollers shorted out and are acting like the PS button(s) are being pressed?
Thanks in advance!
jremy510 05-06-10, 11:11 AM Is there any way to unpair the controllers? That would be the easiest way to check.
Is there any way to unpair the controllers? That would be the easiest way to check.
I am now eliminating the controllers being my problem because I just took the ps3 about a mile away from my apt. and plugged it in there, and it still immediately turns itself on when I turn on the back power switch.
Hmmmm now for a couple rounds of purging in the antechamber of the glove box, maybe even overnight. I hope this works :o

Karlheintz 05-18-10, 02:12 PM Hi everybody,
I've a problem with the Samsung Monitor XL2370.
I belive that it doesn't recognize the ps3...I tried everything i could:
- ps3 reset. (at the 2nd beep)
- ps3 system recovery (in the recovery menu)
- I've connected ps3 to my frined's lcd, putting the right hdmi settings.
- I've tried to change the PC/AV settings.
- I've tried an DVI to HDMI cable.
The weird thing is that the ps3 works fine on my friend's tv, and the XL2370 works with my PC (with the same hdmi cable...)
I can't find the problem, I can't hear the audio neither...
I didn't try to connect the ps3 with an RGB cable to my friend's tv, and I tought that a DVI classic cable will not solve my problem neither.
PS. Sorry for my bad english!

I don't have patience so I opened it up for the 1st time ever (brand new in June '07) and broke the seal. This is the 1st time I have ever seen a ps3 opened :o
It was dry inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT.................it was wet for atleast a few days because water dripped out of it when I picked it up :)
So, it appears the when the dust inside got wet, it turned in to sticky gunk-like stuff in sections of the motherboard. I honestly thought the motherboard was burnt in these sections that's what it looked like...until I took some foam-tipped applicators w/ elcetronics grade methanol (it was on hand so why not :p and it all started to come up. Took a while to do a thorough job.
And since I was in there, I replaced the thermal paste. I did not do any heat gun action anywhere because I have not encountered any ylod or it's symptoms up to this point.
Anyways I put it all back together and turn on switch........NOTHING.
Pop the hood once more, and realise I forgot to plug in the blu-ray clip (that or the power supply I don't recall) and voila, everything back to normal. No more cycling itself on/off. I am going to guess my problem was a "gunked up" motherboard, probably shorting itself out somewhere.
Anyhow it's been about a 15hrs over a two session period thus far, and all seems normal :)
Time will tell, time will tell............
soapbubble 05-27-10, 03:36 PM I'm sure things like this are posted all the time, but I'd really l ike to know if theres anything I can do about this.
I recently bought a new monitor/tv from newegg
LG M2362D-PM Glossy Black 23" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD TV Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 50000:1
Hooked my ps3 into it with HDMI and the home pages and menu look great, but when I load up games, there is a severe jaggedness to many of them. The infamous demo for example is near unplayable with not a smooth edge in sight, games like Uncharted 2 (which look incredibly smooth from everything I've seen) are playged with boxy flickering outlines on most objects.
I've tried setting it to each individual resoultion from the display settings in the PS3 as well as tinkering with screen settings however few there really may be. (Although I am curious to know if people leave on sharpness or turn it off - although the image gets really blurry around 20-30).
Metal Gear Solid 4 looks the best of the bunch, with only really the occsaional jagged edge during the in game cut scenes and a few at distance objects but that's pretty normal and I'm not complaining about it.
I tried hooking up the av cable that COMES with the ps3 but for some reason when I switch to it the screen is REALLY fuzzy, blurry (even at the home screen text) and it simply will not allow me to up the resoultion past standard ntsc (if I try it goes to no signal).
If nothing else I wouldn't mind trying to figure out what's wrong with the standard yellow/white/red connection so I can switch games between HDMI and the other one depending on what they look best in, but I really wouldn't mind knowing if I"m missing something with the HDMI connection.
Any help is great, thanks.
Edit: So, I got Red Dead Redemption looking at other people play it on their ps3s and it looks fantastic. The first starting town for me though... it's anything but smooth. And anything NOT on top of me is completely blurred and jagged and I could scream. Bah.
Have had this issue a few times but have only fixed it but getting a little frustrated now. My PS3 has a blank screen and when I try to reset it, it remains blank. However when I use another TV with the same cord or the original composite cord it works. I have tried the resetting solution but still nothing with the HDMI. Any solutions that you know of that I haven't tried

Bah.
Your missing HD when not using hdmi. The "standard yellow/white/red connection " is only for 480i. The manual is your friend.:)

Yes, but you seemed to miss the rest of the post. The ONLY reason I tried the other cables (although I fixed that issue switching to component rather than the default what came with it) was because the HDMI suffers from aliasing degradation it seems. Things seem much more jagged. Shrug. I don't have ANYWHERE near the smoothness I see others having.
blooz4u 06-17-10, 12:10 AM Alright boys... Been scratching my head on this one for a while.
I've got my PS3 running into my Onkyo SR606 via HDMI. It seemed like it worked fine outputting 1080p for a while, but in the last month, the PS3 won't display any 1080p content. I have the Onkyo HDMI set to "through". I've tried turning off and then on the BD 24 frame rate on the PS3, but it doesn't matter what setting, it just won't display 1080p.
1080i displays fine, but when I try to force the PS3 to display 1080p, it completely loses signal.
I tried swaping cables, and different HDMI ports on the Onkyo, but get the same result.
Everything works fine plugging the PS3 directly into the TV (Sammy LED).
Any ideas here?
Thanks in advance!
doctorgonzo99 06-17-10, 06:20 PM presumably you already did, but check the vid output settings on the ps3 to verify 1080p still shows up as A) available and B) is checked?
Try unchecking all resolutions except 1080p?
If 1080p works fine when connected directly to TV, sounds like it's an avr issue -- not ps3. Maybe post the issue in the avr forum to see if other Onkyo owners have any ideas re: your specific model?
(out of curiosity, what media are you trying to play? games? dvds? brs?)
blooz4u 06-19-10, 05:47 PM Well, the issue ended up being with my receiver. The thing just simply stopped outputting 1080p. My PS3 is mainly used for blu rays, so the 1080p is highly important.
Had an exchange warranty, so I've now got the HT RC160, and once again, all is right with the world! :)
smack518 06-27-10, 12:08 AM Hi,
I've been having trouble with my internet connection. I connect wirelessly with a WEP key. I previously had no problems, but recently I've been getting very slow or no internet connectivity. This started around the same time I got a new cable modem (added VOIP and needed an upgraded modem), though I can't be sure that it was exactly the same time. Also I am using the same router with the same settings before and after the new modem.
When I test the connection I get a IP address, USUALLY succeed when checking the internet connection, but sometimes fail, about 50/50 when checking the Playstation Network, the other items succeed, and the Speed test comes back around 1MB down, <1MB up. When I run a speed test with my PC (also wireless) I get >10MB down and 2-5MB up.
I've opened the ports I saw you mention on another thread, but I'm still having these issues. My ISP claims because I'm getting good connection on my PC the problem is not the modem.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have a launch PS3 that I really don't use very often. Yesterday I tried to turn it on to watch a Blu-Ray. Nothing. No lights, no anything. Toggled the back main power a few times, I changed outlets etc so I know there is power available. Are there issues with this. Didn't see a whole lot when I searched. What are the remedies. I assume the warranty has long since expired.

If you have no lights it's a power supply. If you need a remedy, send me a message on skype my ID is schnurmac. Or call me at 757-504-4263.

i'm having the same problem with a ps3 i'm trying to fix for a friend. i took the power supply apart and the fuse isn't blown.....is there a component prone to failing, just curious before I really start troubleshooting it

Most of the time it's the fuse. If it's not. I have never spent the time to pinpoint the issue further. Just replace it.
mpritc1019 07-08-10, 01:18 PM I have a great connection for roadrunner internet at home according to speedtest.net (12 down and 400 up i think with 32 ping). My ps3 is wired to the vonage router and my nat type is open. The past two nights my connection when playing COD has been horrible. I press select and it shows the one red bar. Road runner thinks it is the vonage router. The router is 4 years old. Could it be the router? If so do you recommend a wireless router I should get?
Thanks in advance for the help!
SchwettyBalz 07-10-10, 02:09 AM I have had this problem happen twice now. Sometimes when playing a dvd I only get some of the audio. The first time this happened we were watching a movie (Sherlock Holmes Blur Ray I believe), and only the background noise could be heard. No dialogue. Didn't have the problem again for a while. Then tonight while the wife was watching Friends DVD the same problem happened. Funny thing was, the preview for the episode worked fine and the actual episode would NOT work! (Each episode has a trailer/preview) I don't get why one would work fine and the other on the same DVD wouldn't. My setup has the PS3 going into a Monoprice 4x2 switch with output one going to an Onkyo reciever to the tv inside (works fine). Output two goes to the TV outside (where the problem occurs). It's very puzzling as almost everything else works and how the other features of the disc work. Any ideas?
One possibility is an intermittent issue with the 4x2 switch. Try the same DVD direct to the TV and see if it then functions properly.
I'd also try unplugging the 4x2 power when this happens, plug it back in with the DVD playing.
oscarlevin 07-17-10, 09:47 AM Hi all,
My current setup is to run my PS3 via HDMI to a Sony HT-CT100 sound bar and then run that via HDMI to my TV. Most of the time this works fine, but about once a week, I'll turn everything on, and no video will show on the TV. The TV is getting some sort of signal, and the sound bar shows it is receiving an HDMI signal (which it doesn't show if I turn off the PS3). However, the TV is just blank, and there is no sound. Unless, that is, I turn off the TV, and then sound comes out of the sound bar.
I can fix the problem by connecting the PS3 directly to the TV, and then plugging it back into the sound bar. Simply unplug and replug does not work though. Once "fixed," everything will be fine for a while, but then the problem shows up again.
I'm not entirely sure if this is a problem with my PS3 or something else, but I thought this might be a reasonable place to start. Any ideas?
Jimmyk058 07-26-10, 08:37 AM Hi everyone. Well, I have just encountered my first serious problem with the PS3 since the purchase in Sept. of '07. I played NHL 10 with no problems late Saturday night but on Sunday afternoon I went to play it again and the PS3 wasn't reading the disc. I ejected the game and inserted it again with the same unfortunate result. I also tried a DVD and Blu Ray movie...nothing. I noticed that the disc does not turn as it is in the same position when it is ejected as when it is inserted. The motor obviously seems to be the problem. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Any advice for a solution? Thanks.
ugabuga 07-26-10, 09:00 AM well I am annoyed! My 2 year old PS3 broke 2 months ago so i went ahead and bought the newer model PS3 Slim.
33 days of owning it and I turn the system on last night and the screen is jumping with different color patterns scrolling all over the place. I check the cables, swapped ports on the tv, etc and nothing helps... my other devices including the 360 work fine. I can play a game via the bd drive and it is ok but as soon as i go to the XMB or stream content it screws up.
Question, will Sony send me the same system and repair it or send me a refurb. Considering this was brand new and only 33 days old I do not want a refurb.

Your laser assembly needs to be replaced. Unless a forein object has been inserted into it and it's causing the laser to not read the disk which will cause disk not spin up. I have many customers that their children like to deposit money into the ps3 lol.

You will more than likley get a relacement sorry to say. They may give you a new one. I would press the issue for a new one.
Jimmyk058 07-27-10, 01:27 PM Thanks for the response. Can you tell me what's the cheapest way to get it replaced? I have the 60 gig, fat, A01 model. I won't send it to Sony based on principal. Their charge of $150 to repair their own product is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen.

I have had an issue with my ps3 an I'm trying to figure it out if its about to go bad or what. I have it connected via an hdmi and every couple times of using it I don't get any picture and I have to do the reset in order to get a picture. Recently it has gotten worse and it happens basically every time I use it and I have to leave it overnight in order for it to work again. It is just when I use hdmi so I replaced the cord and still have the same thing. Any suggestions on what to do. I don't want to sell it as broken if it isn't but at the same time I don't want to give someone a broken ps3 via gamestop.

Good to see there are some decent people in this world by not trying to ditch it on someone else. Does it do it on composit as well? Try and see if it does. If so it's begining to get the no video issue. I repair these. Im not saying you do this but... I think alot of the issues on ps3 and the 360 could be avoided if people would set there power save setting to cut off if left on. Every ylod and no video I have seen have never set the power save settings at all. When I ask if it's left on they say sometimes. If it's on it's hot! I can also tell if the console is sitting on the floor or carpet. The floor is a dusty nasty place for a console or any electronic device that gets hot and uses a fan to cool and breath. All the dust dirt and carpet fibers are sucked inside and creat heat build up. Carpet also blocks some air holes and acts as a insulator to hold heat. Hope people read this.
EVERYBODY that is having issues with the picture (including 'No Signal', corruption, snow, intermittent picture, lines, flashing, etc.) on their PS3 should turn off the option "Deep Color" in the XMB under Display Options (you must be using hdmi). Then report back here on your findings.
The issue (I have a 250g slim) that I have is that I get snow/corruption/flashing/lines or just a plain 'No Signal' when running my ps3 through an hdmi/toslink switch. I have tried 3 different switches now and get the same problem with all 3. Now that firmware update 3.40 is out, there is a more accessible option to disable 'Deep Color.' Whenever I disable this, my screen looks perfect. I should note that I only get this corruption in 1080p, and it seems this is the case with most people affected from what I've read. All the switches I have tried are hdmi 1.3 compliant, have HDCP support and I am using correctly spec'd cables with short cable lengths. I and another person have tried this 'fix' and it has worked for both of our TVs - and he wasn't even using a switch (but still getting display corruption/snow/no signal issues). Sometimes you can get the picture to correct itself by changing inputs on the TV or resetting the ps3 or TV, but it's way less of a hassle to just disable 'Deep Color.'
I think this may only be related to SLIM PS3s - possibly something to do with a different revision of the HDMI chip and how it handles 'Deep Color?' But I'd like anyone who has any display problems like this to test it and report their findings here. The more info we collect, the better chances Sony could include a fix in a firmware update.
GregLee 08-01-10, 12:52 PM I can't pay for any downloads from the Playstation Store by credit card, because PSN won't accept my credit card info. I'm reasonably sure I understand the problem, but I can't figure out what to do about it. The automatic system for registering credit cards will not accept a street address containing a hyphen, and my address has one (as many, many addresses in Hawaii do). I talked to a PS CSR yesterday who seemed to understand my problem, but was helpless to do anything about it. Perhaps someone has a suggestion for navigating the PS support phone system to get to someone with computer privileges who could enter that crucial hyphen for me?

Why don't you buy some PSN cards from the store and use those? They have them everywhere...wal-mart, target, game stop, etc. etc. I've never been to Hawaii but I assume they have some stores where you can buy them.
GregLee 08-01-10, 07:22 PM Thank you for the suggestion. We do have some stores here in Hawaii that carry PSN cards. I would like to get a credit card registered, though.

Have you already tried entering a space instead of a hyphen? It may sound silly but it would be something to try if you haven't already. Without a sample address of sorts I couldn't really give you any more suggestions.
Other than that I'd keep calling PS support until you get in touch with someone that's knowledgeable with credit card transactions on PSN, as I'm sure you probably aren't the first person with this problem. If you can't get in touch with someone on base line phone support perhaps have them escalate your ticket to a level 2 tech, or whatever they call it. Keep asking to be escalated until someone can make it happen.
James1005 08-14-10, 06:39 PM can someone tell me how long it takes to download demo games, some that i downloaded took 2-8 hours, i would think it would be quicker,
Also how come I can't go on line, I go to the www. icon and click on and i get a site and say I type in msn I get like 10 msn sites and when i click or double click the first one it brings to a site about msn and I can do anything after that, thanks new to this jim

The top poprtion of the screen will be blurred and the bottom will look normal. I have tried 3 different tv's in the last month and 3 different ps3's. I have played with the settings on the ps3 and tried different hdmi cables. I have seen this while in game mode only on 2 different brand new Samsung Plasmas the 6500 & 8000 series. Can you post a picture of the issue? From what I understand from your post. It's all a bit confusing. Your saying you have used 3 different ps3's then you say 3 different tv sets then you say 2 different plasma sets and you get the same result? Please clarify this?

Yes it's the video editor. You can capture and upload. This will also show you if it's the tv or ps3. Try it probably easier than trying to photograph it. Let me know if you do it and where u uploaded it to facebook or YouTube.
jmorvay 08-19-10, 12:49 PM Yes, I tried my buddies ps3 and it actually did not do it, but I may have not given it long enough. So then I decided just to upgrade my 80g to a 120g and went and traded mine for a new one and it still does it. I have not messed with the settings on the ps3 except the original setup. I started with a Samsung pn58c6500. This is a 2010 plasma. I was having the issue so ultimate let me swap it for another, same model it it did the same thing even after a software update. So at this point I had tried everything I know of and decided yesterday to upgrade to the c8000 series for only roughly $400 more just to try a tv with maybe a different processor and components and lo and behold it still does the same damn thing! I will try and take a pic but may be hard to do because it doesnt last long when it does it. I think I might try and change from 1080p on the ps3 to 720p just to see if it does it.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying. Yes a pic would be very nice. There is an option to capture your game play on the ps3 now and I think you can share it. Not to positive I haven't tried it yet. If your having same issue on all sets with different ps3's. I'm leaning towards a settings issue. Did you notate your buddies settings? I'll look into the plasma model to see it's specs. Are you running HDMI through an avr or directly to the tv?
jmorvay 08-19-10, 02:40 PM A pic is going to be hard to see it especially during the day and because it last for such a short period of time but i will try this evening. I am using an HDMI cable straight to the tv and I did try the component output on the ps3 as well and it still does it. I did look at my buddies settings, at least the display settings and mirrored them to mine with no luck. I have also tried a different game and it does it. I truned off the deep color hdmi option and turned off all resolutions except the 1080p one. I will try and use as different res. type like 720p this evening to see if it will do it on that. Thanks for the replies!

jmorvay 08-20-10, 11:14 AM Ok, yesterday and last night I experimented with all of the settings on my ps3 and figured out something. I have figured out that for whatever reason if my ps3 resolution is on 1080p via hdmi that it messes up but if I change the ps3 output resolution to 720p it does not do it. So is this strictly a ps3 issue or the tv or a conflict between both somehow?

What games are you trying to play in 1080p? Not all games have 1080p res. I haven't had time to look at specs on your tv. Is it a 1080p set? When setting up ps3 it will ask you to confirm your sets resolution. If it is a 1080p set then you should have all the boxes checked that your set supports from 480-1080p. Maybe your set only does 1080i and 720p. If you only check 1080p the ps3 forces the res beyond what the native game resolution is. And can cause problems. Most games are 720p. Only a few are 1080p like god of war lol and modern warfare 2.
Ok looked at your set specs on pn58c8000 very nice set. I'm scratching my head. I think you are forcing the game beyond it's native resolution. What game is it?

Perhaps I'm not understanding the issue. What's the slap on the hand for?? Hopefully not for discussing a truth.
I just started reading this thread because another friend just had his PS3 take a dive in the crapper. In my circle of six friends/relatives, most of whom I steered toward the PS3 instead of xbox because of well known xbox problems, five (including me) are on their second PS3. Almost all because of YLOD.

I got banned for a day by recommending to someone on here that I fix game systems that was in need of repair. That person did use me. Even our conversations of private messages were being watched on here. That was a kicker that i got slapped for multiple infractions. You can't blame yourself for selling your friends on one system or the other. PS3 and 360 suffer the same exact issues. It's like a car they all have same components that can fail.
I'm always truthful.

Then it must be a issue with the tv not playing nice with the PS3. Your tv seems to be the issue. Have you contacted them about it?

Ok, understood. Being a "good" guy doesn't always have it's rewards. I just wish Sony/Microsoft or whoever would at least man-up and issue a recall when there are well documented issues instead of sticking it to their customer.

Nope not when your not allowed to offer a alternative. Sony has not and Microsoft did somewhat by extending their warranty to more than a year for some owners. They will sell more new units so it doesn't matter to them. They all claim the new models won't be ailed by the same problems. We will see. They are to new to tell. curtlots 08-23-10, 03:07 PM Nope not when your not allowed to offer a alternative. Sony has not and Microsoft did somewhat by extending their warranty to more than a year for some owners. Thanks. Do you know if Sony updated the replacement 60 gig models so that the same thing doesn't happen again? My original 60 was replaced under warranty so the replacement is now getting a little "old". Hope it doesn't just keep happening over and over again...

It happens to all the fat chubby models. Everyone of them. There are different versions of motherboards and fan heatsink designs. I have seen them all get YLOD. if yours is old then it has the possibility. In my findings. The ones that i have had in for YLOD all had dried out shrunken thermal on the RSX chip. The ones that get YLOD preventative maintenance the thermal is still moist somewhat showing some age. That is what causes YLOD IMOP. I use to think dirt and dust played a factor but I've seen ones that looked brand new on the inside have it. I've seen nasty filthy ones that don't have YLOD.
Ok, yesterday and last night I experimented with all of the settings on my ps3 and figured out something. I have figured out that for whatever reason if my ps3 resolution is on 1080p via hdmi that it messes up but if I change the ps3 output resolution to 720p it does not do it. So is this strictly a ps3 issue or the tv or a conflict between both somehow?
I would bet money that you are using a PS3 slim. What kind of "mess ups" are you seeing? Flashing screen? Snow? Green/red/blue lines? 'No signal'?
I have reported this issue on the PS3 forum, in a thread dedicated to 1080p graphical issues via HDMI. I believe the 1080p HDMI compatibility in the PS3 slim is buggy. It really needs to be updated by Sony. You may see all those symptoms listed above in the XMB, browser, or games that actually run in 1080p resolution. 1080i, 720p, and lesser resolutions do NOT exhibit this problem.
See the thread on PS3 forum HERE. (http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Tech-Central/Help-Issue-PS3-slim-120-Gb-1080p-problem-but-1080i-and-less-ok/td-p/43672215)
Let us know if this is what is happening to you, and please post in that thread in the PS3 forum so it gets more attention.
COD Modern Warfare 2. I just spoke to a guy earlier in Detroit that has the same exact tv and he is having the same exact problem I am. He replied to another post in this forum under a different thread. He is seeing the problem while just using the browser on the playstation network.
I'd be willing to bet he has a slim PS3 as well.
Then it must be a issue with the tv not playing nice with the PS3. Your tv seems to be the issue. Have you contacted them about it?
This is not a TV issue. I can guarantee that. I can run 1080p feeds from my PC and XBOX 360 all day without issue.
Temporary fix I found for this issue? Disable DEEP COLOR. It's a video option. Turn that sucker off, and you can play in 1080p all day long without issue. But this is not a 'real' fix, and this issue really needs to be addressed by Sony. That's why I suggest you also post in the thread on the PS3 forum.
(I posted about this very same issue - post #2407; scroll up and read that for more info)
homer7557 08-30-10, 09:12 AM Hi, I have just purchased this ps3 and i am trying to hook it up to my panasonic home theater, I have ps3 connected to hdmi to back of tv, but i am not sure what to set sound at pcm, linear, dolby dts etc and also shoulg I be using a digital optical cable to theater system for sound ? Just gets a little unnerving when they warn you about cooking stereo with wrong choices.
All thoughts appreciated

Is Deep Color even a reality on any source material?
If simply turning off this option solves the problem, and you are not going to utilize any source content with Deep Color, seems like it's a solution looking for a problem.
Even if there are actual Deep Color source materials (possibly games?) everything in the HDMI chain must specifically support this feature.
So if your AVR or TV do not specifically support Deep Color, irregardless of HDMI version throughout the entire HDMI chain, then Deep Color won't work anyway.

Is this your setup?
PS3 ==> HDMI ==> TV ==> digital out to surround receiver
If yes, it is quite likely that your digital out from the TV is limited to 2 ch audio, not 5.1 or 7.1 surround as you would desire.
With such a setup you will be limited to using only Dolby ProLogic (2 ch matrixed into 5.1 or 7.1) for matrixed surround.

With HDMI to the tv that only sends sound to the tv. Your best bet it to use optical to the home theater set it to bitstream. Set ps3 for optical and hdmi to no audio.
Also the above post is correct.

Yes it is, was doing some reading can i go optical digital audio cable, says my home theatre only supports pcm and dolby digital in this mode. can I chose both as formats on ps3, or is it a one or other

ok, thanks pieces are falling into place in my mind. But now defaults to linear outputs in setup, but my stereo manual says pcm or dolby digital only, can I choose both,

I wish I knew the answer to that question. Some people on the PS3 forum claim that their colors are indeed a little better with deep color turned ON, but I can't take them seriously. I doubt they have compared screen captures with it ON vs. OFF. I doubt they even know how or have the means to take screen captures. :)
On that note, I haven't noticed a bit of difference. That's my 2c.
But, since the option is there, I'm sure we will start to see games take advantage of it. I would like a 'real fix' from Sony before that happens...
Simon1921 08-31-10, 12:03 AM I recently purchased Arnold Schwarzenegger's Hercules in New York on DVD. ( I know, worst movie ever made) The movie was playing fine at first on my 250 gig ps3 slim, but then it froze all of a sudden and stopped working. I went to the XMB and restarted the movie, but ps3 would not read it. The DVD works fine in my 360 so I am not sure what is wrong with my ps3. I tried two other DVDs on my ps3 and they worked fine. Does the ps3 have problems playing some discs or is the DVD laser going bad?
tdogroeder 09-02-10, 07:44 PM I friend of mine has a 37" toshiba and he cant get any audio or video with new ps3, but works with fine on a computer model. The port he uses works fine because his cable box works fine in it.
What could be the problem?

You're going to have to narrow this down a little. Is he hooking up hdmi, component or composite?

hdmi
My guess is that he needs to reset the video. Hold down the power button until you hear a couple of beeps.

jedbeetle 09-05-10, 01:30 PM So....I had a 60gb ps3 for a long time. It finally took a major turn for the worse. Since I'm stuck on B/C - huge library of kid games for ps2 plus AAA titles I am still getting around to playing - I found a used 20gb on the cheap. Risky, I know, but whatever.
The 60gb worked perfectly fine with an HDMI-DVI cable on my Toshiba 57H83 projection TV. Hi-res, beautiful stuff, with occasion apparent interlacing issues, but nothing terrible.
The 20gb gets a black screen. Well...it's kind of greenish. I can tell it's receiving some kind of signal...
What I know:
The 20gb HDMI out worked fine on my friend's plasma TV.
Unchecking the 1080p option did not work. I did not try un-checking 720, but this was never an issue before.
Another cable did not fix the problem (though I did not try a different brand...however this brand worked great with the 60gb)
The DVI input on the TV works fine at many resolutions coming from my PC.
The Yellow cable works fine from 20gb to the TV.
What I think is that the 20gb has a slightly different graphical configuration.
Any advice would be appreciated.
RocShemp 09-11-10, 01:37 PM Well my 60GB launch PS3 finally I died. I tried to turn it on this morning and the red light turns green, then briefly yellow, my PS3 issues a few rapid beeps, and the light then flashes red. :(
So how much will I be set back to get it fixed?
If you have Fry's near you, they typically have Refurb "Fat Boy" units between $179-$199 depending on any sale. They typically include a game (whoopie) BUT also typically include a dual shock. IMHO, better deal than messing with ~$150 + shipping to Sony. You can use for parts or save your other for parts :)
Also online but then there's that shipping thing again (and waiting)!

dmbphan041 09-11-10, 02:37 PM So I bought a new 160gig PS3 yesterday, brought it home, went to hook it up annnnnd nothing. The system is on but the video screen just remains blue. I tried the reset thing (hold down the power button) with no luck. The only thing I can think of is, my ghetto tv only has yellow and white inputs, no red. My Nintendo Wii works perfectly fine with 2/3 of the inputs.
Even with 2/3 of the inputs shouldnt I be seeing something???
I took back the first PS3 cause I figured it was a dud, the second one if screwed up as well and I'm convinced either a) I'm an idiot or b) my tv is, in fact, that ghetto.
I've done the "two beeps" reset thing several times with no luck.

I believe you are correct (I think that's in the descriptions) but like I said, parts (depending on what the problem is) :)
I neer had all that much luck with the backwards compatibility anyway!

True. Shame they aren't near me cos it wouldn't be a bad idea to cannibalise them for such a reason.
RocShemp 09-11-10, 07:11 PM I placed my HDD in an external enclosure and hooked it up to my PC. My PC recognizes that it's connected but it won't show up under "My Computer". I was hoping to backup all my files on my PC in case my PS3 is irreparable. I have a bunch of shows that I downloaded from PSN (which are not re-downloadable like game addons) and I'd hate to lose them.

You can not connect your hard drive to your pc to back up PS3 files. You also can not put it in a new PS3. It will want to format it in the new one. Only was is to have it repaired then do a back up or transfer to a new system. Transfer is the best. It will take minimum 2 hours to do the transfer.
Hi there!
I'm a long-time PS3 owner (got ahold of an original 60GB model, the first month they were released, since my brother worked at a toy store that got a few in). The unit served me well until about a year ago, when the HDMI output on it apparently gave out. I switched to component cables, though, and everything was back up and running - until the other day.
Looks like the blue diode either got too dusty or gave out, because it stopped reading any blu-ray media - while PS2 titles still played just fine on it. I considered getting it repaired, but then saw the deal on the new 320GB PS3 with Move controller bundle for $399 and figured I'd just go that route and sell off my small collection of PS2 titles. (A repair guy told me the newer PS3 models have a better-designed blu-ray drive anyway, with dual lenses instead of a single lens, and should hold up a lot better. He said repairs done to the original models all use reconditioned parts that may or may not last that long before giving you more grief ....)
So ANYWAY, here's the thing! For quite some time, I noticed that in certain instances, I'd see a bit of "snow" going through the images on my screen. I wrote it off as graphics issues possibly related to my old PS3's dead HDMI video output (and possibly the rest of the graphics chip starting to fail). But I see the exact same thing on this brand new unit!
Is this normal, then? (It's hard to describe without a screen shot handy, but I'll see it in such places as "night time" scenes in the @Home environment, when my avatar is walking around a scene with a lot of black background. You'll see some (usually green, as I recall) pixels randomly appearing and disappearing throughout the background as things move around. I know on PCs, such graphical "snow" usually meant overheating or failing GPUs, or alternately, problems with an attached LCD display.
My TV is a 50" Phillips plasma I got from the Phillips outlet store online, a few years ago. Only paid around $1000 for it at the time, which was an unheard of cheap deal -- so wouldn't rule out the TV as my issue here either. Just wondering what others have noticed??

From what I quickly read. It has nothing to do with your laser diode or laser at all it displays the media only. If your menu is snowy and hdmi and the through Sony scart output you have what may be no video issue. Call Sony on that one as I don't repair no video on ps3. For around 150 you will get a refurb slim and loose backwards compatibility. As far as I know no know repair for it. Good luck.
ps3zero 09-21-10, 12:17 AM Hello, I'm having problems getting my PS3 to work online again, my Signal Strength says Not Connected, when I go to WLAN Settings and press Scan it would say The access point was not detected. When I put enter manually, it would say Obtain IP Address Failed or Access Point cannot be detected or Access Point timed out, I use a Linksys router with a verizon modem and my router has been upgraded to the latest firmware, I unplugged and restarted everything multiple times and restore my ps3 to default settings and I still get the same error. Now I have an Ipod Touch when I search for Wifi like 8 SSID shows up including mine, but when I do the Scan thing on the PS3 it will say The access point was not detected, and there's no blinking green light in my ps3 just that orange one, and the modem, router and ps3 and pc are really close, I can touch both at same time, I used to have 100% signal strength too so I don't know what's wrong

If they are that close to each other why not just wire the PS3 to the router?
If for no other reason than to see if wired works correctly before messing with WiFi issues.
You can buy a 30 ft Cat5e network cable for $3.30 at Monoprice.com
Is your SSID a unique name? i.e. No other WiFi's near you with the same name like "Linksys"?
ps3zero 09-21-10, 08:45 AM I think I did try wired and no lights came on, but my SSID is andy and it used to work, I moved to a new location so I don't know if that matters, in my old place I got internet with my SSID, but it should be able to see other SSID's too

Yes, it should be able to see any other WiFi's within range and broadcasting their SSID's.
A common WiFi issue is that people leave the default SSID name (Linksys, D-Link, etc..) so their devices accidentally connect (or attempt to connect) to their neighbors WiFi which has the same name.
Not an issue in your case.
Best I can offer is to turn off your PS3, unplug router, plug router back in, wait for router to completely boot up, try the PS3 again.

Sure, it's possible. But again, the best way to diagnose this is to try it wired. ;)
ps3zero 09-22-10, 08:12 AM ok i tried it, and everytime i plug the cord in my ps3 no lights come on, like my linksys router will take the green light away and my verizon modem will take the ethernet light away

Dish VIP 722 --> HDMI --> Sony KDL46EX700

Need guidance in PS3 Sound and Video BD Audio settings to make this happen if this is possible. I do realize the TV will not pass DTS but I can live with that. Thanks in advance.

It's sending 2 channel to the tv over HDMI Use your optical like this. PS3 >> HDMI to tv. PS3>> optical to your receiver set PS3 to bitstream optical voilą problem solved. Set your tv speakers to off. If you read this thread you will find your answer. Search pS3 audio issues.
Also what do you have set for audio output source on your ps3 settings?
LevityNYC 09-25-10, 09:51 AM I have been having this issue while palying C.O.D MWII either via online or campaign. I get this broken mirror image with a thin line that runs horizontally on the top portion of the screen which lasts 5-10 seconds usually. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Its not a PS3 issue....its Game Mode problem as this happens on my 360 as well.
Here is what happens to mine. Its odd as a few people have an issue with it and a few people swear it never happens.
Watch the video in 720P and in full screen around the 28 second mark.

PS3 Lagerman 10-01-10, 12:46 PM My PS3's surround sound for games like MW2 isn't balanced. The rears are too loud. It sounds okay for movies but for games it is way too loud. I am sending a similar signal for movies because I turned off bitstreaming. PCM, I think. I have used auddessy for automatic calibration.
Is there a setting on the PS3 to reduce the sound of the surrounds.
Anyhow, does anyone else have this issue with games?

I'd suggest using your AVR's memory settings for such audio differences, that's why they have various memory's to set and choose from. :)
Leave existing settings as Mem 1 for movies/tv.
Make Mem 2 your game mode (after lowering the rear speakers volume to your liking).

So other people have experienced the same thing? That is all that I was wondering. I wanted to make sure that my setup isn't screwing it up.

I can't speak for such an issue between PS3 movies and games as I don't do gaming.
But the issue is common for other sources. Probably the most common use of utilizing different AVR memory sets is when playing movies vs playing music. Often the best settings for each involve different audio settings (speaker settings, x-over, dynamic range, etc..) so one simply programs a different AVR memory set for each type. On my AVR Mem 1 is music and Mem 2 is movies. There are six more memory sets available which I do not use, but switching between them is a simple button press on the AVR remote. ;)

PacMan2006 10-07-10, 11:51 AM This thread is very long so I figured I'd just ask this question and see if I can get some feedback.
My PS3 is no longer reading any discs which, after researching it, I've found is a common issue. I'll call Sony today, but I've had the system for 3 years so there's no warranty anymore.
My question is this...if I choose to buy a new slim PS3 (after selling my broken one on ebay as is), are there any known problems I should be aware of with the slim version? My current PS3 is the bigger version, and before this disc reading issue, I never encountered a problem with it.
Thoughts?
schnurmac 10-07-10, 12:18 PM This thread is very long so I figured I'd just ask this question and see if I can get some feedback.
My PS3 is no longer reading any discs which, after researching it, I've found is a common issue. I'll call Sony today, but I've had the system for 3 years so there's no warranty anymore.

New slims are cheap compared to your model. Email me for info on solution to your problem. myps3repair@gmail.com
valero_r 10-15-10, 10:20 PM I skimmed through 3 pages of results, but I didn't see the answer to my problem. I have an 80GB fat PS3 purchased in July 2009 with the latest firmware. The console is hooked up to my Onkyo TX-NR807 through HDMI. I get both sound and picture, but I can't get plain Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. Other sources (DVD and PC) produce DD, but not the PS3. The same thing happens when I hook up the PS3 to my Onkyo 3008.
I have selected DD5.1 & DTS both automatically and manually in the sound settings PS3 menu. I've gone through and reset default settings. I've also gone through the menus with tech support to check for corrupted files. I've tried numerous adjustments, but nothing seems to work.
If I go through optical cable, I have no problem getting DD. That could work, but I don't have a spare optical input for the PS3. Does anybody know how I can get DD working through HDMI? If it means anything, I always see the PCM symbol on my receiver.
EDIT:
I've also tried different cables, and I've moved the other sources to the PS3's HDMI port on the receiver. I always get the same result--no DD from the PS3 when using HDMI as the designated sound cable.

Why do you want DD on bluray and PS3? PCM is better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_pulse_code_modulation
Its uncompressed audio.

Do you just want that fuzzy feeling that you see DD on your Onkyo? I have the Onkyo 806. I like seeing TrueHD and DTSHD red lights but I realy dont hear a difference from them to PCM. DD is a lower bitrate than PCM and newer formats. So why would you want it?

No major big ones. I repair game systems. From what I have heard from customers getting the fat ones repaired they had their new slim shipped off to Sony because the lasers failed like right out of the box and they want me to fix the old one while they wait on Sony to take their time.
Yours may be a backwards compatible model. Slims are not they only play DVD PS3 and bluray. yours can be repaired much less than a new one.
valero_r 10-15-10, 11:47 PM Why do you want DD on bluray and PS3? PCM is better...
I haven't looked too deeply into the issue, but I've read that PCM = TrueHD/DTS HD. When switching back and forth (using my PS3 slim), PCM just didn't seem the same. PCM didn't sound as clear to me. It didn't seem as crisp as DD either. I'm sure a bunch of people will tell me I'm crazy. I wouldn't ever say I have a pair of golden ears, but that's the way it sounds to me. Maybe I'm setting something up incorrectly.
EDIT:
Is there a certain surround mode that I should keep the receiver in while playing PCM tracks? My speakers aren't anything special, just Polk RTi series.

if you change that it will change it away from multichannel keep it on this

You are likely hearing only a volume difference. Louder seems "better" to the human ear and brain.
I'd bet in a true, blind, volume leveled, ABX comparison between TrueHD/DTS-MA decoded at your PS3 (PCM) versus your AVR decoding them, you would not be able to reliably choose between them. ;)
It's the same lossless audio simply decoded at different points.
schnurmac 10-16-10, 09:47 AM It's the same lossless audio simply decoded at different points.
This is simply put by toby.
valero_r 10-16-10, 07:07 PM Thanks for the input. I raised the volume, made some other minor adjustments, and it sounds pretty good. I guess I'm 95% happy (I think the DD lighting up was good for at least 5% haha).

:)
Here is another way to look at it....
To get such audio to play at all, a lengthy series of steps must take place. From reading the encoded digital data on the disc to hearing audio on your speakers, it's the same number of steps every time, the only difference is where these steps are taking place.
Somewhere in this audio chain the two steps you are referring too must take place, decoding the digital data and converting the audio to PCM. No matter where these steps take place (the player or the AVR), these steps must take place. So either your player is converting the audio to PCM or your AVR is converting the audio to PCM, but PCM is always a part of the audio you are hearing. This is true with MP3's, CD's, DVD, SACD, DVD-A, Blu-ray, LaserDisc, DAT, TV tuner, cable box, sat box, Sirius, XM, etc.... All digital audio, somehow, somewhere, must be converted to PCM to be played on your speakers. :)

Just curious, have you try setting PS3 to Bitstream? If not give that a try.
jLp vAk3r0 10-17-10, 12:52 PM Hey guys,
My phat PS3 suddenly can't play PS3 games nor Blu-ray movies. No errors, the PS3 just doesn't recognize them.
It does play any DVD movies or PS2 game I try.
I opened my console and cleaned the Blu-ray lens and the problem persists.
It's not under warranty so Sony wanted to charge me $150 (bs).
Anymore ideas you guys can give me would be appreciated.
Thanx.

Thanks, but the PS3 I'm having trouble with is the phat version. AFAIK, bit stream was only an option with the slim models.

I know the phat can't Bitstream but your post was asking about DD 5.1 and DTS. And not about HD codecs unless I read the post wrong.

My reply was based on the fact that you asked me to try setting the PS3 to bit stream. It's odd that I can get DD with optical, but not HDMI. DD/DTS is enabled in the PS3 menu when using either audio cable.
anthonyyu 10-19-10, 04:40 AM I usually use ps3 (model: CECH-2002A) + HDMI cable + BenQ E2400HD. It works perfectly in the past. But since few days ago, when I turn on the power of ps3 and monitor, it suddenly shows no picture on the screen. It has signal (because if there is no signal, the screen will turn into blue screen).
And I reset the ps3 by holding the power button for 6-10 secs again and again. Still have no picture.
Then I unplug the ps3 and plug the same HDMI cable to my xbox 360, it works.
Then I plug the same HDMI cable to my laptop, it works.
After they I took my ps3 to my friends home, and connect my ps3 to his LG LCD TV with both the original av cable (the red, yellow and white cable come with the ps3) and my HDMI line at the same time. I first saw the ps3 have picture in AV channel, then I reset the ps3 again, then go to setting menu, change display setting to HDMI mode. Next I unplugged the av cable, go to HDMI channel, I saw that the picture is perfect again on my friend's LCD TV. I saved the setting then come home and try. Still no picture!!!
Today, I borrow my friend's HDMI and try my luck. Still no picture!!!
Because my LCD monitor does not have av line in, do I can not use the method of connect both av cable and hdmi cable.
What should I do now. The ps3, hdmi cable, and benq monitor are fine when I use them separately. But when combine them together = no picture now (it happened few days ago, they are fine in the past).
Thanks.

Im sorry to inform you but your PS3 is doomed. There is no hope for it. No repair exist for what you have. Its the no video issue. I have tried and tried to repair this issue many times. I was successful once but the video wasnt stable and consistant. It would go away once I re assembled it. You are forced to send it to Sony for a refub slim with a 90 day warranty. You will loose all of your data. Sorry to inform you.
LevityNYC 10-24-10, 05:43 AM COD Modern Warfare 2. I just spoke to a guy earlier in Detroit that has the same exact tv and he is having the same exact problem I am. He replied to another post in this forum under a different thread. He is seeing the problem while just using the browser on the playstation network.
Identical problem here. I've tried multiple TV and multiple consoles.
You are 100% correct in your analysis. Game Mode does not play well with 1080P. The only PS3 games I have issues with are games that run in 1080P (which includes MW2) A good way to check is to hit the info button and it will show the resolution. The same thing happens with my Xbox 360. It tries to upscale everything to 1080P. A simple solution to this problem is to just set the maximum resolution to 1080i or 720P. You won't notice a difference in games as most don't run in 1080 and those that do, the difference will be negligible, or you can just deal with the 5 second problem every 10 minutes or so.
Just remember to change the max resolution to 1080p when you want to watch a BluRay
I'm really curious to hear how people like the PS3.
this is a great article!
I love it:) had one since it came out, graduated from 20 gb to 60 gb to 120 slim, now 320gb slim. I was never to convince my self any thing over $250 same value to my money even if it could be oppo!
migs_inc 11-08-10, 12:24 PM There are many highly technical people on this board that can give more detailed answers, but as a moderately-technical user, I absolutely love the PS3. I've had mine for about 3 years, and would summarize as follows:
PROS:
- Excellent Blu Ray quality, features, with constant upgrades via wifi from Sony.
- Well organized x-bar interface, fairly easy to use.
- HDMI connectivity to receiver, TV, etc.
- Wired and wireless internet connectivity.
- Integrated with Netflix now, no CD required.
- Game portfolio is now outstanding, with many excellent shooter, adventure and other games available (check out sites like gamespot.com for the latest).
- LOVE the media server function, that is, the ability to stream photos or music from my laptop through the device to my stereo. I never even considered these features when I purchased it, so it's a wonderful bonus.
CONS:
- Internet browser is still sub-par, even after upgrades. Why they don't work as well as Explorer or Firefox boggles my mind.
- Can't stream .MOV video files (e.g. QuickTime), as Sony apparently doesn't want to play nice with Apple. A minor issue for many, unless, like me, you have a video camera that uses MOV format.
- Bluetooth interface for remotes works fantastic for the remotes, but makes integrating with many all-in-one remotes like Harmony an issue. However, there are, I believe, a few companies putting out remotes that incorporate bluetooth, and there are workarounds.
- Newer PlayStations are not enabled for PS2 or earlier game formats, though there is rumour this might change.
- Fan can be loud when unit gets hot.
I have the 60gb with a hardware component that allows playing PS2 games. Other units do this with software, and others don't do it. Check the PlayStation website for backward compatibility if this is an issue for you.
In short, I love this machine, and the games available today are mind-boggling in their sophistication, graphic and sound quality and creativity.
Mark_Likes_Games 11-09-10, 03:19 PM I just got a new 160 GB Slim - I hope it was a good choice... In the Xbox world, the newer versions were always better... Is there an "Idiot's guide" to settings on the PS3? I have a native 720p projector and wonder whether I should have the PS3 output 1080i or 720p - is there a consensus on that, or should I just see what works better?
There's a lot of choices in the video settings menu - what's the collective wisdom on which options to turn on or off?
I know these are generic questions - I was hoping the first post of this thread would have sort of a "guide" to common problems and questions.
Thanks!
Edit: phdeane - that looks like a LOT of info. Thanks!

AVCanuck 11-12-10, 11:01 PM Thought I'd post on here and see if one of the resident fix-it experts could chime in.
My problem started a few updates ago, not sure exactly which one, but it did seem to begin immediately after the update. At first, my PS3 would simply freeze while booting up, getting stuck on the wavy bar thing before the menu. I'd just restart and it would work. Then after a few months, it got worse and I'd have to try a couple times before it would load successfully. Now it's at the point where it takes 10-20 attempts to boot. It never used to lock up during gameplay, but now I cannot play games because it will freeze up. If I play a movie, no problems, never locks up. If I leave the system idle in the menu for just a couple minutes, it will freeze.
So here's what I've tried... I've done the system restores, rebuilt hard drive and even bought a new hard drive and tried it to eliminate that as a possibility. I've also cleaned out the fan, used the heat gun on the processors and replaced thermal compound, and I've borrowed a friends power supply to see if it would make a difference. I think I've done this correctly because I have successfully fixed that same friends YLOD issue.
I have the 80 GB, CECHEO1 model, but it was very gently used. No burn in marks and there was little dust inside. It's almost as if my system needs to warm up in order to work and if it's not doing anything, it freezes. I wonder if there is a way to flash the chip and revert to the original version because maybe that initial system update installed incorrectly? I dunno... the YLOD is supposed to indicate some piece of hardware is faulty, but I've never seen the yellow light flash once on my PS3.
In any case, thanks for reading and sharing any ideas with me. Oh yeah... I'm not sending it back to Sony... I'll buy a new one if I must but it would still be great to get this one fixed so I could at least have a stable system that I could use as a media center in another room.
skullkrusher101 11-13-10, 02:12 AM I just bought an HD66 and im having problems getting the PS3 to work over HDMI. It worked for some reason the first time I tried it but every time since it wont recognize the signal. Anyone able to fix this?
smithsonga 11-13-10, 11:13 AM I checked and couldnt find the best place to post/ask these questions: We plan on using the PS3 as a media hub. So gaming, media server, pandora music player and potential netflix streaming.
- What is the main purpose of the hard drive storage? e.g. game storage and saved games or? I ask given the selection of hard drive sizes now.
- Is it easy to upgrade the hard drive in the future if needs change?
- We store all our music on a network storage drive that claims DLNA and compatibility with the PS3 (an Iomega drive). Therefore I assume I will not be using the PS3 drive for any music storage...or videos for that matter.
- Is storage needed for netflix or streaming movies?
We are looking at a deal on the 250gb PS3. Only $20 more than the 160gb version that appears to be the latest console. I have read online the only difference is the hard drive size, is that correct? if no one is really sure, better idea to get the 160gb, save $20 and apply that to a new hard drive in the future when needed to swap out?
thx

Jim - I'm probably not the best resource but I'll give you my $.02 and that's about all it's worth. Personally I don't think a big HDD is necessary. I use a family 1TB external HDD connected to one PC and house everything on it. I then run the Java PS3 Media Server v1.10.51 and stream everything from that server to the PS3. Now if we could install games on the HDD so they would run more efficiently, then I'd advocate for a bigger PS3 drive. But I like to use my PC HDD since it is running iTunes, ********** and others so I don't have to move files here and there.

If you replaced the hdd then its a buggy PS3. I repair games systems. You seem to have gone overboard in reflowing the cpu and gpu. Its software related is what im betting on. No you cant flash anything on the PS3. You may want to check out jailbreaking sites like psgroove and see what has developed over there. But as far as I know you have done allot to it and its still not working right. Its one of those strange issues. Usually a new drive solves your issues that you have. Thanks.

You can try another hard drive it will want to reformat then download latest update to flash drive insert follow directions. If that doesnt work Sony will want $150+ to correct it.:(
I have one here that was stuck in the intal over and over. I put new drive in now it can find the update on my external. It works on all the other systems I update everyday.
