GW-SMOkeY 12-09-06, 12:42 PM Folks,
Ok, so I just got my PS3 a few hours ago. My setup is as follows:
PS -> HDMI to Pioneer vsx-74txvi
Pioneer vsx-74txvi -> HDMI to DVI connection to Samsung 56" DLP
Not too bad, eh? Well, no go. I can see the setup menus fine, but I get no sound at all. I have gone through the audio setup manually and automatically without results. I got Sony CS on the phone, who said someone else had called in with Belkin PureAV HDMI cables and had the same issue. I ran out and bought two new HDMI cables. Opened up one, a Philips IIRC, same issue. No sound to begin with and when loading a BluRay movie or DVD, the HDMI light on the front of the receiver just goes off and the TV displays "No Signal".
I have tried the analog cables that were included through the receiver and they do work, so, according to Sony, the unit is A-OK. Anyone have any ideas? I haven't tried HDMI->DVI right to the TV yet, as it is a bit of a pain to get in back there.
Any and all advice is more than welcome and appreciated! The cables obviously work, since I'm on the Sony support site via my PS3 right now! (though still without sound......and I'll lose video again the second I load media.....perfectly fine besides for that! :P).
Thanks!
Mike
Try rebooting that console first. I had a simillar issue where there was no DOLBY DIGITAL when turned on. Only worked with stereo in games and movies, but when I restarted everything was ok.
GW-SMOkeY 12-09-06, 01:01 PM i downloaded nba07 demo it won't play so i when i got the disc verison of the game put the disc in the same thing it won't play.
Before you can play any game, you have to make sure that you downloaded the latest system update; since no game will launch unless you update your system out of the box.
GW-SMOkeY 12-09-06, 01:10 PM Anyone else having issues with normal DVD playback? It seems as if it's playing in letterbox format, yet there are still the black bars on the side (as it would in 4:3 ratio). It's cutting off the left and right side of the title credits even. Basically covering up the L/R side during play. I checked the options on the PS3 and they're all set correctly (from what I could find). Blu-Ray DVD's play fine.
For the record, I'm running PS3 > HDMI > Westinghouse LVM-42w2, and (not that it matters, but to be thorough), Optical > Receiver (sound is fine though).
You have to hit the FILL or STANDARD SCREEN. This only applys to content that is low res. Aka 480p ( since the dvd is so small, the screen displays it very small, hittin gthat Strech/Fill - wil lfix the issues ) at least it does on my 37w3. BTW, no issues with other content, except the flashing HDMI authentication issue which is fixed by jumping the imput.
GW-SMOkeY 12-09-06, 01:12 PM Anyone else?
Noticed the same here, widescreen DVDs are cut off on the sides on a Westy 47" set.
Press the Fill/Zoom button. (only applys for DVD's make sure to switch it back to standard once you go back to PS3 games, and Blu Rays.
EatingPie 12-10-06, 09:44 PM Try the new setting with the 1.30 patch that allows you to switch your component out from RGB to YPbPr. It's in the display settings of the XMB.
Wait. For me, it only did it under HDMI settings. I still switched it, but I'm running Component Video.

zouriel 12-10-06, 11:18 PM I am glad im not the only being bitten by the blinking retangle of death on the PS3.......

michelspascie 12-11-06, 01:19 PM I got my PS3 and connected it to my computer LCD display (SDM-HS75P/) thru a HDMI – DVI cable.
It doesn’t work at all !!!!
My new LCD is capable of 1280 X 1024 so I was expecting a nice 720P. display.
I connected the PS3 on my sister new LCD TV thru a DVI – DVI cable and everything just work fine.
Does anybody have a PS3 working on computer display thru a DVI connector ???
Should try a HDMI – DVI – VGA cable ?
Please help !!!
henry_the_horse 12-11-06, 01:43 PM Can get 1080p through HDMI on 42 inch Westinghouse (LVM 42W2). However, image contains moving white sparkles around much of the text and practically anything in motion on the screen. Bumping the resolution down to 720p solves the problem, but does not make me happy!
I've been thinking about buying the same set (with the PS3 in mind) and found the below message board about older models experiencing the issues you explained. I guess newer models have completely fixed their HDMI & DVI 1080p problems and if you have an older model it sounds like they will replace it for you. Try calling Westinghouse and see if you can swap models.
<url was here but this message board refused to let me post the link>
Posted from someone at the above message board url:
"You will want to check out the firmware version # first before purchasing. I currently own this same TV but here is the deal. There is a sparkling problem with the HDMI and DVI 1 ports in 1080p mode with the PS3 and some other 1080p output devices. This is present in all of the early production models with firmware version #1.16 or #1.19. Westinghouse actually changed to different hardware a couple of months ago and now the newest firmware is #1.00. I know this sounds odd because the firmware # is older, but that is because the physical hardware inside changed and so they reverted back to #1.00. Anyways, I just called Westinghouse tech support again this morning and I am sending in my TV to have it replaced with the newer model under warranty. If you want to call their tech support about this, the phone number is (866) 287-5555. Just make sure you have the newest hardware model before purchasing and it will save you some time in the long run. I have owned this TV for 5 months now and it is great other than the 1080p sparkling problem which should soon be resolved."
I downloaded the newest patch...
Have a problem with my controller. X and O buttons do not respond from time to time. Also, when playing Ridge Racer my NOS turns on as soon as it fills. Not sure if this is a controller problem or what. Everything was fine till yesterday nad then controller started not wot work well. I charged it and everything.
Before you can play any game, you have to make sure that you downloaded the latest system update; since no game will launch unless you update your system out of the box.
I had the latest download at the time which was 1.2 that is the first thing you have to do when you hook the ps3 up is download the up date i have played other games on it just wont play nba 07. It really dont matter i just got it to play blu-ray movies anyway i do all of my gaming on my 360.
delusive1 12-12-06, 04:14 PM Out of the box the 1.1 worked very well on wi fi. The after I did the update to 1.3 my wifi connections to my router is hit or miss...on and off...I am not able to register now. Any fix to this?
CloakedPuppet 12-13-06, 12:23 AM First post :)
Hey guys, I've just picked up a PS3 and have been noticing a problem with my display. The screen will sometimes "shift" slightly to the right or left while playing Resistance. It doesn't happen very often but it's still annoying nonetheless. The picture has also gone blank on me a couple of times - once in the dashboard and once during gameplay (I could still hear the audio and the game was apparently still running). This doesn't seem to me like it would be a hardware problem - I've had problems with my 360 before and it always was pretty obvious when it was a hardware issue (artifacting on the screen). Perhaps it has something to do with my settings on my TV? Since you guys know much more than your average 1-800 customer support line, I thought I'd try here first.
I picked up the unit yesterday along with a MadCatz brand HDMI cable from EB. My set is a Hitachi 51F59 and I have my Virtual HD settings configured to 1080i. Does this sound like a console issue, the settings I have on my TV or could it be as simple as a faulty HDMI cable???
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
PS3: Sound issue, when watching Blu-Ray Movies sounds seems very quite and I need to crank up the volume to even hear anything decent. Using a Pioneer Elite 84Tsxi receiver, it is connected via HDMI and also digital toslink... Other devices work fine, I am wondering if I need to do some Blu-Ray tweeking on the settings.. Thanks.... Fricking picture and games look amazing.

I've had the same problem with the sound. Also, I've had movies lock up on me several times.
Denbar68 12-13-06, 05:56 AM Got the PS3 as a xmas present ya me. anyhow it plays BluRay, CDs and PS3 games no problems at all. Regular DVD and Ps2 games are not being recognized. I slide it in and the icon in the top right corner pulses a few times (30 sec or so ) goes away but nothing else ever happens. Ran some Cat-5 across the room and updated to 1.3. no difference.
I am just running standard composite cables to my junky little AV unit to the standard TV.
My wife says the vein in my forehead is pulsing like mad. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Denbar...
Did you navigate in the XMB to the games or movies sections and see if a disk icon appeared? I don't think these formats auto-launch.
Denbar68 12-13-06, 08:32 AM Yes, nothing new ever shows up under either icon. I have tried 4 different PS2 games just incase one was a copy that didn't work. NFS:MW, Midnight club, are two that are listed as working. Same with movies.
FrankJ.Cone 12-13-06, 08:47 AM Just got one last night. I've played some games at a friends but last night was the first time I have "used" most of the features of a PS3 and the word that comes to mind is CLUNKY.
FrankJ.Cone: I think it is very easy to navigate.... Setup just like the PSP, which is very easy to use. Put an Xbox 360 in your system, I have one, the menu looks way too cartoonish for me, and there fan noise is horrible.
jlatham: I haven't had anything lock up yet, sound I took care of, needed to set the output to bitstream because I am using the optical out right now. No lockups and picture is still smokin!
Anyone have an idea what the new firmware 1.31 was all about? Waiting to see if Sony will allow upscaling or allow you to set the PS3 to the native resolution of your TV.

You need a HDCP display due to DRM. Modern HDMI & DVI TVs have HDCP support built in. Most DVI computer monitor do not support HDCP so will not show anything. Converting from HDMI to DVI to VGA won't work since HDCP is required from the player to the display (end to end). Sorry.
cash banquet 12-14-06, 02:44 AM Video Problem:
I was running my PS3 at my parents house through component cables. However, I just packed up and moved to my own place. I got a new TV that has hdmi. I forgot to switich the video output to hdmi before i left my parents house, and the cables are still there (half way across the country).
When I plug in the PS I jus get a black screen, I gues because it still wants to only output component, and I only have hdmi. Is there a way to reset the video settings, or make it find the new ones, without my parents having to ship me the compnent cables?
Please help!!
UPDATE: Ok, I fixed it by keeping the On/Off button pushed until it beeped a second time after powering on, the PS3 automatically looked for searched for current connection.
chunderblunder 12-14-06, 01:13 PM Sorry for the stupid question, I'm a newb.
Several guys earlier in the thread mentioned that they can't get their PS3s to link up to the internet using a wired connection, and I'm having the same problem. I get a time out message while looking for my IP address.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
tron999 12-14-06, 05:14 PM Chunder, what's your ethernet cable connected to?
I have an awful time with my PS3 thinking an ethernet cable isn't connected. After firmware updates, I have to turn off the PS3 (with the switch in the back) , make sure my wireless bridge is turned on (which it always is), wait a few min, then turn it back on. THEN I get link lights. Otherwise, no. Totally fubar for some reason.
On to my problem -
When I play resistance, after awhile, when I grab a health pickup, the screen goes black. I have to hit pause quick, and then the screen comes back after a second. I've got it hooked up via a joytech switchbox with PS2 component cables to my toshiba 46HM95. Latest firmware edition.
CloakedPuppet 12-16-06, 08:58 AM Just an FYI for those of you with the Hitachi 51F59 - these sets DO NOT accept HDMI version 1.3 which is what PS3 uses. I talked to Hitachi's service department and they dropped this little bomb on me. They have no firmware update as of right now. Using HDMI for your PS3 with this TV will cause the types of difficulties I mentioned in my last post. I'm not sure if this same problem occurs with other size sets in this series but I imagine they have the same firmware so...
Since I'm a new here I can't link yet but there is a thread where I found the problem occuring with another AV Forum user. You can do a search for "2 Week old Hitachi 51F59A - Color/Screen Flashes, Problems " in the rear projection forum. Needless to say I'm not too impressed with Hitachi right now. Hopefully they get on with a firmware update soon.
cannot get 1080p through hdmi on 50 inch sxrd kd-r50xbr1
this is very frustrating because i was told by both best buy and sony that i should be able to achieve this resolution
Unfortunately, both Best Buy and Sony were incorrect. The KDS XBR1 CANNOT receive 1080P inputs over HDMI. It is a native 1080P set, but unfortunately does not accept 1080P inputs. The newer XBR2 and A2000 SXRD models are both capable of accepting 1080P inputs.
Can anyone tell me if Resistance FOM and NFS Carbon work with the motion sensor of the Sixaxis? I've read some threads on AVS suggesting that these games DO take advantage of the motion sensing, although limited, however I have not gotten the games to work with motion, and frankly, I don't even know how to turn the motion option on?!
TIA
dogdoctor 12-18-06, 02:09 AM Tone64:
In R:FoM the sixaxis works when you are grabbed by a menial - you shake the sixaxis to break free of the grip. It is very limited in its useage. Others will have to comment on NFS:C.

Have you tried reading the owners manuals to your games before posting in AVS Forum? Usually that type of data is in the manual...

Hey there,
Before you trust any Best Buy employee or Sony CSR...and before you plunk down hordes of moolah...Download the owners manual and pore over it like a horny teenager getting your hands on a Playboy for the first time... :D
That is what I do...Saves me a lot of headaches in the long run.
tron999 12-18-06, 10:08 AM Well, I called Sony today re: my ethernet problem. They're replacing the unit for me. I have to call back when I'm in front of the unit to get the model #, and then they're going to send me a "coffin" ala xbox 360. I also have to do a system backup on my PS3, so I can keep all my game saves. They won't let me keep the HD. I hope it backs up the PS2 card I copied over.
I'll keep you guys informed!
I hope this solves the problem with my picture going black during resistance, too.
kmcrawfo 12-19-06, 07:52 PM I have a 5-6 year old Toshiba 50" HDTV which displays 480p and 1080i. No 720p or 1080p. I can not get my PS3 to display a 16:9 display while playing games. Blu-Ray shows widescreen in 1080i. Under video output setup options I select component cables & 1080i. I get no option of choosing 16:9 or 4:3 display output. I called Sony and they have no idea of whats going on. I will try to test the system on a newer 16:9 TV, but would like to get it to work on my TV as a widescreen display (i.e. black bars above and below the display). Thanks.

Isn't 1.3 backwards compatible!
CloakedPuppet 12-21-06, 02:49 PM Isn't 1.3 backwards compatible!
Apparently not, unless Hitachi is just using this as an excuse - which is also pretty likely. In the end - they need to address this issue.
Set up the PS3 yesterday and had what seemed like intermittent power supply problems. In the initial set up menu, the screen would show menu items for about two seconds and then go blank...and repeat. Between cycling, was able to do the set up and update the system software and set up a user account, but something was wrong. Playing games, the system worked fine, but each time returning to the setup the cycling started again.
Question:
I am leaving today for a couple of weeks and want to know should I take this thing back to BB? Different HDMI cables, all the FAQ's, everything I could think of. Help me, quick.
Sounds like it could be a HDMI issue, what TV are you using how is it hooked up?
Westinghouse sets have that problem UNLESS DVI2 is used.
Try setting the output to 480p see if that helps, and try the AV cable only, if its Westinghouse set use DVI 2 input with a HDMI to DVI cable. (Dual Link)
pjdavep 12-22-06, 09:55 AM I am have the same problem that is detailed in this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768498
Perhaps that guy is who sold me his PS3 off eBay...no wonder I got such a good deal ;)
Anyway, I have fiddled with the thing for several hours and am pretty annoyed.
I have never heard sound thru the optical cable. When I first got my PS3, I immediately downloaded firmware 1.31 and selected all the A/V settings. I'm using HDMI for video and optical for audio. The red light comes out of the optical cable like there is something being sent, but my Denon 3802 rcvr only senses a digital input and that is it....no sound. I've tried a couple different optical cables and a couple different inputs on the Denon. The other inputs on the Denon have been used for HD Tivo, and DVD optical input, so I know they work. I downloaded firmware 1.32 last night and there was no change. I even tried the "revert to factory defaults" option and got nowhere.
And yes, the optical output is set to bitstream in both places and the Dolby/DTS checkboxes are selected.
I'm gonna bring my friend's 60giger over and see if that works. If it does, then Sony will be getting a call.
Anyone else get NO audio at all thru their optical cable?
Later,
pjdavep

Try setting the output to 480p see if that helps, and try the AV cable only.
Thanks, Jack. I have a Westinghouse 47 and have used HDMI/HDMI with various components successfully, so far. Now the cycling is going on, even with the games. I've boxed it up and am taking it back. Thanks, again.

Sorry made a typing error.
Your PS3 is fine, just plug it into DVI2 on the Westinghouse 47" it will work perfect.
Its the Westinghouse HDMI and DVI1 inputs that are problems with the PS3.
The DVI2 input will work fine with a HDMI to DVI dual link cable.
I'm using the regular conection (not HD) and I can hear the audio from the game, but no video. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Thanks!

Well, I'm off to get a cable. Thanks, Jack. I'll let you know how it works out. :thumbsup
Think thats the folder names needed too... PHOTO, VIDEO, MUSIC... check the online manual to be sure.
pjdavep 12-23-06, 12:33 PM Ahhhh...I feel like such an idiot.
So I finally got my PS3 optical cable working. I had brought a friend's PS3 over and could not get the optical working either, so I figured it was something on my rcvr. I noticed when I hooked the optical cable to the PS3 that light was coming out of it....hmm, that's weird. Once the second PS3 didn't work, I checked the back of my Denon 3802 (which is difficult because it's in a cabinet and I have to use a mirror/flashlight to see), and dammit I had the PS3 hooked into the optical out! However, my first try a couple days ago, I was using the 'optical in' port number 1. I tried that again and it still didn't work. Finally, I found that I needed to hit the auto button on the receiver for it to re-recognize the signal being sent! Even though the receiver recognized a digital signal, it wouldn't do anything with it until I hit that button. Very strange, but now I have sound!!

You can't hook the ipod up to the ps3 because the ipod has copy protection. It will not work plugged into the ps3. This is the ipod's fault and why i don't like ipod's or i'tunes. You have to copy the mp3's to disks or flashdrives to hear the songs on the ps3.
mchamblissII 12-23-06, 11:26 PM awwww now thats the worst crap I have every heard damn that sux
condor123 12-24-06, 02:16 AM For what? Sounds like you didn't do enough research on the set... Sony never advertised as capable of 1080p inputs. The set IS a 1080p set since it only displays 1920 x 1080 progressive and has a fine deinterlacer.
Now if BB (or their salesschmuck) lied to you, you might have a grevience, but that's unlikely, though it's possible their salesguy just didn't know what he was talking about. In any case, difficult to prove unless you have it in writing (which is extremely unlikely).
Not that I think you'll see much benefit from 1080p HDMI versus 1080i over HDMI with your TV doing the deinterlacing.
I got tricked into believing the xbr1 was a 1080p . I brought my tv back to best buy showed them the receipt showing 1080p and I got my money back actually I got another tv returned that one for cash.

After reading this msg, I realized that I too had my Optical plugged into the optical "out" port of my receiver instead of the "in" port. Also, I noticed I had it plugged into the "video" IN jacks which my receiver did not recognize as valid optical port. I had to switch to "DVD" IN order for my receiver to recognize the optical signal from the PS3. RESOLVED!

i have the hitachi 57f59 and i have my ps3 hooked up via hdmi and it's worked perfect so far with no problems at all. maybe i'm lucky ,but i will take it. i have watched a blue ray dvd and played several hours of games with no issues. oh and my tv has firmware 1.3. just an fyi
budabellyx 12-24-06, 11:03 PM Going back to the XBR1 post, I work for BBY and in their defense I knew better but our sony reps were telling us that it supports 1080p. I asked in the sony store here in the Dallas galleria and they said the same.
But now to my real issue, I cannot get my d*mned Westy LVM-37W1 to accept 1080P from my ps3, it will from my PC via DVI, but not via my ps3 even into DVI1 which is the supporting input. It registers as 1080p but it displays as if the resolution is out of the range of the set. It supports 1080p 60hz im confused. Im running it through an Elite VSX-81TXV which is HDMI 1.2 and supports 1080p passthrough, ive tried it there and direct to the monitor... Woe is me, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
i have my ps3 hooked up to my Pioneer VSX-82TSX via hdmi. when i try and play fall of man i dont have all the sound (i hear the people talking but no gun/explosion/any thing else)
when i play GTHD/Motostorm demos it seems to work fine
i selected hdmi audio/video when i first setup the system

when i play GTHD/Motostorm demos it seems to work fine
i selected hdmi audio/video when i first setup the system
TIA
i take it you have the ps3 hooked up to your receiver with the digital out on the ps3 correct? if so make sure you have the ps3 sound settings set to bitstream for both audio setting ( i am pretty sure there are 2) if you already have done this then i would give sony a call. hope this helps
nharmon91 12-25-06, 11:39 AM So today I got a HDMI cable and I went to connect it to my TV. I plug it in and change the settings to output video thru HDMI. I click accapt and change my TV to the HDMI input (from the component that my PS3 was running on) and I get fuzz and Green fuzz, all this crazy stuff. I then go back to componant (it auto goes back to previous setting since HDMI wasnt working) and it works fine. Anyone know what the hell is going on?
(I have a 32 ich LCD, with native resolution of 720p and have had no problams with my PS3 until now)
P.S. I have already tried this:
* Turn on TV and set input to HDMI port being used.
* Make sure PS3 is connected via HDMI.
* Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to the TV's native resolution for all settings.
And it still doesnt work.
I have a Westing house lvm37-w3 and my PS3 hooked up through HDMI. 1080p games look outstanding. However, games that run in 720p like RFOM look really bad.

What could be causing the image quality to look so horrible. I know the monitor is downscaling from 1080p to 720p but I wouldnt think it would look this bad. Other people with the same lcd say theirs look just fine. My Lcd has bios version 1.6 if that helps. Anyone have any ideas?

I had that, too. But the bigger issue was the cycling on and off of the video while in the dashboard. I hope a new cable will fix my issues, but I'm not optomistic.

The first thing that comes to mind is that 720P games may be getting downscaled to 480 because you do not have the 720P checkbox enabled in the PS3 video settings.
Go to the PS3 system settings and run the automatic video mode detection and see if it lists 720P as checked once the test completes. If it does not and you are sure your TV supports 720P input you can go to System Settings->Video->HDMI->Custom and make sure you have all of your TVs supported input modes checked.

I have checked the settings while in the game and it is 720p. I went into the ps3 settings and I can uncheck everything but 480p. For some reason it is locked and will not let me uncheck it. When I uncheck everything except 1080p and the locked 480p it then downscales to 480p. I can tell because it goes to 4x3 ratio and the system info on my westinghouse says its at 480p.
I have done the automatic detection and the manual detection and still RFOM looks like horse poop. The monitor and PS3 are both downscaling the game to 720p but something is causing it to look horrible. Even motorstorm demo which is 720p looks better while not not as good as it would on a native 720p screen it still looks decent. Any other ideas?
Hey guys,
My PS3 is currently hooked up to my Sony XBR 960 CRT with component cables. Up until recently I have noticed something strange going on with my PS3 and my Xbox 360. During random times of the day (seemingly when my washer and dryer are running) I will lose video from both systems. A few minutes ago I had the dryer running and my PS3 blanked out: total loss of video signal. The strange thing is, I seem to remember this happening at other times of the day, when the washer and dryer weren't running. This makes the source of the problem very difficult to pin down, and it also seems like the PS3 is a bit more sensitive than the 360 when other appliances are running. Inititally, I thought my UPS line conditioner was the source of the problem, so I unplugged that, but that doesn't seem to be the case since I'm still losing the signal. To get the video back I have to reboot the system and things are back to normal. Has anyone else run into something similar?

Find out what inputs your TV accepts and make sure all available ones are checked. If you set it for automatic it I will probably do it for you.

My TV accepts 480p/720p/1080i. But if a game (like Resistance) is 720p native, and I check all the res's my Tv accepts, I believe the PS3 will take native 720p on disc----PS3 upscales---->1080i (because it ranks 1080i as a higher res than 720p and converts to highest possible res supported by your TV)------my TV upscales------>1366 X 768 (native res of my TV.)
If I uncheck 1080i I think it will take native 720p on disc--send it directly to my Tv without scaling--->then my TV will scale to 1366 X 768 (native res of my TV.)
Wouldn't I be saving the signal being scaled one time (from 720p to 1080i) by the PS3 when it would only then be scaled again by my TV to fit the TV's native res.
Although some games may be 1080i, then I would want 1080i checked so the PS3 sent the pure unscaled 1080i directly to my TV.

How would the battery back-up system be a better solution than my Belkin UPS? I don't know much about them.

I have experimented and learned that the PS3 will not scale any native resolutions if your Tv accepts them and you have them checked. So the best thing really is just to check all resolutions that your TV accepts (Duh...what they tell you to do!), and if your TV accepts the resolution of the game it passes it to your TV, and then your Tv scales it if need be.
Motostorm and Resistance are being received by my TV as 720 p (there native res) and GT HD is being received by my TV as 1080i.
Good job Sony!
okinawan 12-26-06, 11:15 PM Hello all,
I have the PS3 hooked up to my Denon receiver via HDMI and then out to my sony display. I just downloaded the demo of Grand Tourismo HD(awsome graphics!) and something really odd happened. The normal screen color upon intial startup(menu screen)has changed from a very pale light purple to what appears now to be black and white . My icon is still in color and everything else seems normal. It's just that the wave and the background has changed. Thinking it was the receiver I connected directly to the display and same thing...
Has anyone experienced anything similar? It did take a while for the game to download. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Appreciate any input.

That is normal. If you read the online doc/tips, it says that the background will change monthly (or something along that time frame).
okinawan 12-27-06, 12:52 AM That's a relief...Thanks Boss_Hogg :)
I think it's my receiver that's losing the signal. I think there's external interference (such as my washer and dryer) that's causing my receiver to lock up and lose the signal.

I have that problem too, but I just attributed it to my TV (Philips 42PF9630A) trying to figure out the proper resolution.

zippy710199 12-27-06, 08:19 PM Bluetooth Keyboard for use with PS3?
Ok i need some kind soul to give me some help.
I have a MICROSOFT MODEL 1002 BLUETOOTH WIRELESS KEYBOARD.
Im wanting to use this with my ps3 for webrowsing etc.
Here is my problem.
This Keyboard came in a pack with a wireless mouse.
Im using that wireless mouse with my laptop so i need the usb blootooth radio thing for my mouse.
The pack only came with one in the box.
I called Sony and asked them if the built in Bluetooth support for PS3 would allow me to get my Bluetooth Keyboard to work and having spoken with 2 PS3 support guys they couldnt figure out a way to get it to work or detect my keyboard.
So here are my questions.
Can you buy replacement usb bluetooth radio thing so i can set it up and on my laptop to link to that device then just put it right in my ps3 usb socket.
I know this worked because i tried it i just dont have a 2nd one.
Or should i be able to get this keyboard to work with the built in support for bluetooth?
When setting up other devices it only shows the bluetooth remote and then mouse and headphones no mention of keybboard support.
And yes i have the very latest firmware.
Any help would be amazing.

The background color will change throughout the day according to the internal clock so thats why you'll see the different colors at different times. This freaked me out at first, but its interesting.
Chairface1 12-28-06, 02:58 PM The following is certainly not a major problem, but it is a bit annoying nonetheless.
I currently have the PS3 hooked up to my Toshiba 34HF83 CRT with the Sony HDMI cable and a Monster HDMI-to-DVI adapter. I seem to be getting the right resolutions for everything, with the maximum output set at 1080i. In the HD resolutions, screen edges are cut off slightly, especially when accessing the PlayStation Store. I can access all the links there, but like I said, it’s a little annoying to see stuff cut off. Has anyone else noticed this?
Speaking of those HD resolutions, is there a way to have the XMB be a little bigger on the screen?
Thanks.

The overscan settings on your set, and mine, probably are the issue here. Try looking here -> for some dangerous stuff (http://www.hdtvarcade.com/hdtvforum/lofiversion/index.php?t4580.html) on possible ways to adjust the overscan issue. WARNING - Stupid stuff can fry your set.

pikappstrmchaser,
I had this exact same problem with a unit I purchased off eBay. If you have a gift or original receipt, I would exchange the unit at the store you got it from.
I was trying to do this through EBGames/Gamestop, but of course they're all sold out. I decided to go through Sony instead. Call the number on the box and they'll send out a prepaid box. I sent mine in last week and waiting on its return.
sting0r 01-01-07, 08:22 PM Anyone try to play DVDs on their PS3? It took me a while, but I got bluray playback working fine, for some reason my tv wouldn't automatically recognize Component Video Color spacing and had to force the PS3 to output RGB via HDMI and also make sure my PS3 was set to output at 1080i. Now when I tried to play a DVD it switches to 720x480 resolution on my tv and goes into 4:3 mode. Movies are display in 4:3 letterbox instead of just 16:9.
Any ideas how to fix this one? Or does just hdmi dvd playback not work right?
UxiSXRD 01-01-07, 08:39 PM Have you tried the DVD Wide Display setting?
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/bdsettings.html#840
The PS3 will not upconvert right now, though it's speculated that will be added by firmware update ala the 360, so you'll only get 480p right now.
Cvetan1 01-01-07, 09:11 PM Purchased a 60gb PS3 a few days ago at my local Wal-Mart.
Not to impressed with the BR player, overheats and locks up sometimes when playing movies. I also get a "crackling" sound sometimes in my speakers, sounds kinda like static. Seems to do this the longer the unit is on?
Overall, I am impressed with the gaming(graphics are killer) and ability to play BR movies all in one box. Plays and functions at a drop of a dime, unlike my Toshiba XA1. I think I'm going to end up returning it or selling it on Ebay.

It doesn't skip, the PS3 just freezes and locks up. I have to switch the power off then on, and then it will work fine again.

Anyone try to play DVDs on their PS3?
My PS3 is now my main DVD player. I wish I did upconverting via HDMI, but it does a decent enough job. It's quieter than the 360 and I don't have room for a stand-alone....
Has anyone else have their PS3 die...I can't even get it to power up...nothing...and I have tried everything and I also have Bd movie inside. This thing is totally dead.
Anybody know how to get my BD disk out of my dead PS3? before I return it.

Are you using the wi-fi connection? It's possible you keep losing the signal and reconnecting.

sstephen 01-05-07, 02:13 AM ok, so I know HDMI problems are rampant, but anyone else experience the following? If so, any suggestions?
I get the ps3 to recognize my display (Optoma HD81) in 1080p (have also tried to force to 1080i, same issue).
When I go to play a movie, either BD or DVD, 9/10 times I lose sync on HDMI. This is not a freeze during the movie, that has never happened to me, but I've only been able to watch 3 so far. When a BD or DVD starts to play, the ps3 loses sync and the Optoma always takes a few seconds to get sync. Then I get a black screen and ps3 stops responding. This happens as soon as I tell the thing to start playing the video. I can still eject the disk, and reinsert, but can't see anything. Last dozen attempts have all failed. I have not swapped out the hdmi cable yet (just actually thought of it). Have not tried any games yet, and I'm not going to spend money on them until this problem is fixed.
Any other suggestions, other than returning it?

Sounds like you have a ground loop, as described here (http://www.epanorama.net/documents/groundloop/).
I experienced the same thing when I tried using my Sony branded PlayStation2 component cables and someone else on the forums pointed out this issue. It's apparently semi-common (the most common causes being mixed 2-prong and 3-prong power cables, CableTV, or possibly a powered antenna. You could experiment by unplugging the cable/antenna from the TV and see if that changes anything.
Rather than go through the trouble of locating the ground, I went to the intended setup of HDMI and optical (I already had the HDMI cable waiting, but wanted to experiment with the component cables because I had them). No more buzz/hum or lines. :)
Mongoos150 01-05-07, 12:58 PM Can everyone who owns a PS3 tell me if this is a good time to buy? Are there any kinks worked out with PS3s in stores now that weren't worked out with the original launch batch? Will there be any updates I should wait for that I wouldn't be able to get in an ordinary firmware update?
Just buy with a return policy...
My first PS3 the DVD player did not load discs.
The 2nd sounded like a hair dryer on high.
The last is just fine, no reason to wait, just get a good one.
In fact reason to buy now, as the BR disc is only included in the first batch, some new ones already are missing it.
Not that missing that movie would matter to me. :)
Wellll....First, I'm not one to bash anybody for anything for xyz reason.
Every person has their own reason for what 'they' want and how 'they' like to have it.
I, for instance, love the PQ of SONY (insert manufacture here) products but I can't tolerate the proprietary technique that they employ.
But to the point, ordered 12/16/06, received 12/21/06, installed 12/22/06
DOA 12/22/06
Called SONY 12/22/06 and was told 7-10 business turn around
It is now 1/05/07 and I have yet to even receive the box to send the unit back so that I can return it to Sony. Called Sony CS and was told that they "didn't know why" it happened but it would be expedited from "here".!!??!!
My only hope is that, maybe , I'll have a completely updated unit when I eventually receive it.
Sorry to vent .....
Thanks for this great thread. Quick question for y'all:
I have a PS3 arriving Monday. To confirm: there is no way to have my PS3 connected via HDMI without first connecting using the supplied cables and changing the video setting? I.e., there's no autodetect out of the box?
Thanks in advance.
(This is important for those of us in small New York City apartments with not much space to squeeze in and mess with connections... :) )
Its works just fine with HDMI only out of the box as long as your TV syncs to it.
sstephen 01-06-07, 01:39 PM muttt, I actually hooked mine up via composite first, but you SHOULD be able to sync to HDMI right away by holding down the power button on the front for 5 sec or so when you first turn it on. You should hear a beep, then you can let go and it should start with 480p and let you select other resolutions from there.
Fantastic, thanks very much guys.

No need to hold anything down here, just hook up the hdmi and turn it on.
It will display over HDMI and ask you if you want to use HDMI then let you make the resolution settings. Thats how mine worked out of the box.
I have a PS3 connected to my Samsung LCD TV using an HDMI cable.
I also have a Toshiba HD-A2 player connected via HDMI to the same TV.
I also have my cable box DVR connected via Component cable to the same TV.
Settings on my Samsung LCD TV are: Contrast set to 90 and Brightness set to 50. Everything looked great, deep blacks, perfect contrast, etc. on all sources.
However, when I turn on my PS3, all of a sudden the image is washed out. I have to lower the brightness on my Samsung LCD TV down to 30.
For example:
Here's what it would look like on my PS3 via HDMI (to my Samsung LCD TV):

And here's how it should look:

Why is this happening? I don't have a component cable, or I would try connecting my PS3 that way.
Can anyone help me? Any thoughts from PS3 owners?
Rieper, did you go into display settings and or BD settings and try the HDMI auto option or other options? Is the problem just on BD movies or games too? It seems you are saying it is washed out even on the XMB.
sethhobrin 01-08-07, 11:19 PM I am having some major problems. Please help if possible!!!
I have a Sony Grand Wega XBR2 60" television and a Sony STR-DE985 receiver. I am running HDMI to my tv for video and I am running Optical audio cable to my reciever.
Video on PS3 is set to HDMI. Audio is set to Optical, Bitstream, 5.1 and DD. I have fully updated the firmware and have even reformatted my ps3.
Here are my issues.
-Played Underworld Evolution and I experience audio cut outs in certain repeatable points of the movie.
-Whenever i insert a BD in to the ps3 while it is in standbye it boots up and goes to a grey screen and never starts the movie. My ps3 is then hard froze. I can only insert a BD while the XMB is loaded.
-I insert Terminator 2 and It has the little icon in the uppper right corner and it never goes away. I hear sound from the movie loading. My PS3 is then hard frozen and I need to use the switch to turn it off. Try a couple more times and finally I get video. I start the movie and this giant message appears on my TV saying it is an unsupported audio format? What the hell is this? Why would my PS3 be sending audio signals to my television via HDMI? Here is the kicker. While I see this message I get no video from the BD but 5.1 audio is coming from my reciever. So far Terminator 2 is completely unplayable on my ps3. I don't know what the deal is. A couple of times I have gotten the movie to start however it will freeze on a frame of the movie and the audio will keep going. I cannot get ride of the frozen frame and must power down the ps3. Driving me nuts. Only happens on the T2 BD
-Ice Age meltdown - perfect playback. No audio or video problems.
-Stargate - perfect playback, no audio or video problems.
Is my T2 BD just fubar? It has no persceptable scratches or blemishes. It is from Blockbuster online however. I just can't get any kind of consistant performance trying to play it.
Rieper, did you go into display settings and or BD settings and try the HDMI auto option or other options? Is the problem just on BD movies or games too? It seems you are saying it is washed out even on the XMB.
Hi, and thanks for the reply.
The brightness issue I have is upon turning on the PS3 (ie. XMB, Blu-ray, or game). Since no one else is reporting this problem, I'm thinking it has to do with my Samsung LCD TV. I have HDMI set to custom-> 480/720. Turning HDMI to auto just adds 1080i, but offers no help with regards to brightness.
Any ideas?
pahhhoul 01-09-07, 11:11 AM my setup:
PS3 v1.32
LG 30" HDTV: model 30FS4D
HDMI cables: 1 that came with my Samsung HD-960 dvd player 6ft.
1 that I purchased from monoprice.com 3ft.
both work perfectly fine with my Sammy DVD player
TOSLINK optical cable: 3ft Monster Cable
Pioneer ELITE receiver
*I am trying to connect my PS3 to my tv via HDMI.
*When I try to select the PS3 video setting to HDMI, I get a blank screen.
*When I try to set the audio to output only via HDMI & select "automatic"
I get the following error: 8002B224
!! Many people are getting this same error. NO ONE HAS A SOLUTION !!
I spent about an hour on the phone last night with a SCEA rep trying to resolve this problem. NOTHING WORKED.
Things that I tried that the SCEA rep suggested that didn't work.
*do a hard reset of the PS3
turn off the PS3 via the switch on the back.
turn the PS3 back on.
with the red light on, hold downt the power for 15 seconds. wait for 3 beeps, after the 3rd beep, release the power button. The red light should display. Then turn on the PS3.
*tried both of my HDMI cables.
*plug my tv & PS3 into the wall socket rather than the surge protector
*updated my software from v1.31 to v1.32
*connected the PS3 via the supplied a/v cable to Video input 1 & the HDMI cable.
with Video1 on, set the video output setting to HDMI, switched to HDMI input on tv, then pressed X on PS3 controller. Results = BLANK SCREEN!
Anyone else have any other suggestions?
Oh! The suggestion of holding down the power button for 5 seconds so that the PS3 automatically sets the HDMI setting, didn't work either.
thanx,
Paul
cubbiechris 01-09-07, 11:45 AM Are you using the wi-fi connection? It's possible you keep losing the signal and reconnecting.
I'm getting the same thing! I don't understand it because my 360 never ever losing it's connection.
AmigaDude 01-09-07, 01:48 PM .. I am trying to connect my PS3 to my tv via HDMI.
Paul -
Sounds like there is a synch problem between the two, or a bad PS3. You might want to try a couple of easy things to get them talking.
1) Change Startup Mode
Turn PS3 OFF
Switch TV to HDMI and shut it OFF.
Connect HDMI cable ONLY to PS3
Hold down Power for 5 seconds to turn PS3 on
Power on TV
or
2) Force HDMI Settings
In PS3 settings (using whatever cable works) set:
HDMI video = YCbCr
HDMI Audio = PCM
Switch PS3 to HDMI mode
Switch TV to HDMI input
Well, everything set up fine w/ HDMI out of the box, but...
...it seems like whenever I use the PS3, at some point, the video will drop. I guess this is an HDCP issue? I have an NEC 42XR4A, and I've never had any drops at all with my cable box via HDMI (Motorola 6412 III) or dvd player (Oppo 971 DVI->HDMI).
Any thoughts? Am I destined for component?
(Also, what's the best way to re-sync and bring the video back? It seems like I always have to manually power the machine down, then turn the power switch in the back off then on, then turn the PS3 on while holding the power button for 5 seconds... is there a better way?)
AmigaDude 01-11-07, 01:01 PM muttt -
It sounds like you have something else going on besides video dropping. Next time you are in, make sure that the Settings for Video and Audio are set to HDMI and Automatic. Just in case, remove any other cables (video/audio) connected to the PS3 and then see if it blinks out again.
To answer your question on resynching, I'd try switching the TV to another input and back again.
Thanks, Amiga, I'll try that. FWIW, I am running HDMI to the TV and optical to my receiver, but I'll try it without sound for a little while.
ok, so I know HDMI problems are rampant, but anyone else experience the following?
I have same problem with ps3 and hd81 Co6. Only way I have sorted is to have component cables and get 1080i :( . I can get it working 1 in 100 tries with the hdmi. If you do find a solution please let me know and I will do likewise.
I got my PS3 hooked up to my KVHS510 Sony CRT through component, but my TV has a DVI port can someone please point me to the exact adapter I need to hook up PS3 to HDMI.
I got my PS3 hooked up to my KVHS510 Sony CRT through component, but my TV has a DVI port can someone please point me to the exact adapter I need to hook up PS3 to HDMI.
All you would ned is and HDMI>DVI adapter :) they can be found at many places.
Here's what it would look like on my PS3 via HDMI (to my Samsung LCD TV):
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9659/1002726lv9qk0.jpg
And here's how it should look:
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/8007/1002726lv9yn0.jpg
Why is this happening? I don't have a component cable, or I would try connecting my PS3 that way.
Can anyone help me? Any thoughts from PS3 owners?
I got the samsung 4692D and i get the same problem if i don't change the brightness and the contrast. For what ever reason it looks a lot brighter with the hdmi cable.
Not just with my ps3 i get the same from my dish HDDVR 622.
Yellow dog 5.0 problem
After i install the otheros. self and the otheros.bld on the ps3 i switch it to the other OS and restart it. And i turns back on but it doesn't do anything at all my screen stays blank and it does not read from the Linux DVD.
What can i do to fix the problem?
I already tried to re install the bootloader and it did not change anything.
Please help.
Setup: i have a hdmi/dvi adapter to my dvi connection on my Panny T-50PHD6UY plasma.
It recognizes 1080i with no visual issues. However, when it switches to 720p (for RFOM) there is a 1-2" vertical line consisting of different colored horizontal lines on the right edge of the screen. Any clues how to resolve this resolution issue? The Panny is definitely a 720p device and has worked with hd cable boxes and directv hd boxes with ease.
Also- with DVD it is outputting a 4:3 signal (or when it "automatically" finds resolution--it does so at 480p and you still have bars on the side). Why would it do 4:3 at 480p resolution? I had to use Full or Just on my plasma to fill the screen which is not ideal.
Thanks!
Brian M 01-13-07, 04:30 PM muttt, I actually hooked mine up via composite first, but you SHOULD be able to sync to HDMI right away by holding down the power button on the front for 5 sec or so when you first turn it on. You should hear a beep, then you can let go and it should start with 480p and let you select other resolutions from there.
Had a diffrent problem but what you said worked thanks man!!! :)
hogholley 01-13-07, 06:56 PM Two issues with PS3 connected HDMI to DVI on Westinghouse LCD. The TV claims to support 1080p on DVI 1 (which is the input I have the PS3 going to):
ISSUE 1 - When I try to manually select 1080p through PS3 video setup, it runs the test screen, goes all retarded, then after 30 seconds or so, goes back to the same screen to select again, and doesn't prompt me to save changes to keep it at 1080p. If i deselect 1080p and leave 1080i as the highest selected, it prompts me to save, and then keeps the system at 1080i. Am I missing something here?
ISSUE 2 - I try to run optical audio from PS3 to my receiver (BOSE 3-2-1), and get no sound. I verified that BD-DVD audio was set to Bitstream, and selected audio optical for audio settings, also selected both DTS and Dolby for receiver sound formats. I still get no sound at all. If I use composite a/v for sound, it works fine.
I feel like I'm missing some simple step to fix one or both of these issues. Any help?
Thanks.

Well, discovered through DVI there is just a bunch of overscan so a simple h-position switch on the plasma seems to have cured the 720p problem.

KnightLerxst 01-14-07, 10:09 AM I am having an odd ground loop issue. I have my PS3 connected to my TV and my Infocus 4805 through via my old PS2 component cables via a 4x2 component switch. Audio is hooked up to the receiver via optical. I am getting the ground loop hum through the tv speakers and a quieter hum through the receiver. The the rolling horizonal bar is there on both the TV and the Infocus. Now when I first hooked up the Infocus I had ground loop and that was because my cable line was not grounded. I grounded the line so the cable line is not the culprit. I tried unplugging every other input device besides the PS3 and no luck...still have ground loop. I made sure all of my components are plugged into the same surge protector...still have ground loop. I have an HDMI to DVI cable on the way from monoprice, so hopefully I won't have to deal with this problem much longer...it is still driving me crazy though.
joeflux 01-14-07, 06:31 PM The overscan settings on your set, and mine, probably are the issue here. Try looking here -> for some dangerous stuff (http://www.hdtvarcade.com/hdtvforum/lofiversion/index.php?t4580.html) on possible ways to adjust the overscan issue. WARNING - Stupid stuff can fry your set.
Great news to people with CRT HDTVs like my Sony KV-34XBR910
Today I downloaded Lemmings Demo and to my surprise there is a setup menu in the game that let me shrink the screen vertically and horizontally making all the edges show up unlike all my other PS3 games that overscan. If this is there, then that means that someone in programming is aware of the problem. I never had issues with my xbox 360 and they all show full screen without overscan. However, PS3 with HDMI might me the issue and hopefully the next version of PS3 update will solve it so we can all tweak our older HDTVs on CRT. I really don't wish to go into my service menu and fix something that is not broken (since it works on xbox 360).
mapleridge 01-14-07, 09:30 PM Hi, my ps3 is hooked up to Sony grand wega KF50WE620 via hdmi>dvi and i am experiencing the sparkels which randomly and annoying, sometimes i reset (by holding the power button to 5secs) and it will go away. But usually i noticed this after i quit a game or blu-ray movie.
i googled and what i found from their comments is because of hdmi>dvi ports, but not sure if the hdmi-dvi cable itself is causing the sparkles. Any advise if there is actually a fix for this.
So...questions and comments....
I have a Westinghouse 42w2 rev 1.19. It is a set which does accept 1080p signals through all of it's ports (well...not composite or S-Video...). I know that the HDMI ports have the issue of hot/sparkly pixels for sets prior to the (confusingly newer) 1.0 sets. I would be thrilled to hear about peoples experiences with this set, a PS3, and a HDMI -> DVI connection and component connection. Success? Failure? Results? Thanks!
scientificmapp 01-15-07, 10:01 AM While playing the PS3 I notice that in the middle of games the action seems to slow down. So it seems like the game play is in slow motion. Any solutions on how to correct the problem? Or is my PS3 defective...this seems to happen with both games on blu ray disc and demos downloaded.
moega13 01-15-07, 01:50 PM Just bought a Bravia S402010. I have the HDMI to HDMI cable connected directly from PS3 to TV (no HD cable box yet). Plug in AV cables to try and change video output settings from AV to HDMI. System tries to make the change, but goes black for 30 seconds and doesn't seem to recognize HDMI at all. I know it seems obvious, but I'm obviously missing something here. Any suggestions?

Try This- Turn on the tv first. Then turn on the ps3 and go to the video settings.
Select hdmi and automatic connection. Make sure the tv is on before setting up the ps3.
And of course have your hdmi cable connected before all of this.

Anyone know why the ps3 say's this when you select bitstream to output audio.

bestmetandjetfan 01-15-07, 03:00 PM hey guys. i orignially had my ps3 hooked up via hdmi. then i moved it to another tv for the wekeend and i had to use sucky composite cables. to get it to work i had to hold the power button for 5 seconds to reset the resolution. now when i hook it up back to the original tv via hdmi, i am getting no picture. any help would be greatly appreciated.
juanster 01-16-07, 12:58 PM This problem was reported a while back, but I couldnt find a solution for it. After watching a blu-ray movie, I cant just eject the disc and put in a game to play. There is either no sound, or no video, one or the other. I have to turn off the system with the switch in the back to get the game running properly. I can here sound in the crossbar menu, but as soon as I click to start the game, one of the two things happen.
This doesnt happen only right after I watch a movie. I watched The Wild a week ago, and put the system in standby. I tried to play resistance yesterday, but i didnt get video, only sound. I had to shut down the ps3 to get it working, this is obviously very annoying. Has anybody found a solution for this?
I am getting overscan on my Sony CRT HS510 running the PS3 in games like the F1 demo. I can fix it in the service menu but then the PS2 games running on PS3 end up having underscan and I can see the black edes of the screen, so is anyone else with CRT HDTV's having this problem?
I am running on component, if that matters, Reisistance and Motostorm seem to be fine but I have no other PS3 games to test. Lemmings had a screen adjust which helped but I am worried more games won't have this and I don't want to have to goto the service menu to adjust to each game.

Mcklein 01-18-07, 06:16 PM My problem has to do with audio.
If i choose HDMI i can listen to the tv...but not the receiver, when i choose optical i listen thru the receiver but not thru the tv...do i have to manually turn the optical on everytime i want to watch a movie...??
my settings are
bd/dvd audio (hdmi) linear pcm
bd audio output format(optical digital) linear pcm
audio output settings
hdmi
linear pcm 2ch 44.1khz
linear pcm 2ch 48khz
i bet im doing something thats blocking the other...
thanks for your help.
user7800 01-18-07, 09:19 PM That's because the PS3 is set to LPCM. -> Settings -> BD/DVD Settings -> BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) -> Set to Bitstream.
That way your receiver can decode Dolby Digital and DTS fine via optical.
fuad
This helped me thanks.
klee2000 01-19-07, 01:39 PM 2K7 definitely supoprts 1080p. It's also one of the main pros of the PS3 version and is being touted by 2k sports as having its first real sports game in
"True HD". I'm a member of the 2k boards and yeah, I think a few people are having problems there two. I'm getting a PS3 whenever I can get my hands on one for MSRP and my first game no doubt will be NBA 2K7, so any updates from you guys would be great. Hopefully this is just a case of defective products? Or a software glitch? :(
NBA 2K7 doesn't run in 1080p it runs in 720P I have a 1080I LCD I tried both cables component HD and HDMI for some reason with component it drops to 480 but with HDMI it drops to 720p I dont know why. I tried other games as well Madden07 and gran tourismo. Gran Tourismo was the only game that played in 1080p on my 1080I LCD without any problem. Does anyone know why? I tried on 2 different TV's one a projection and the second TV LCD. It doesnt tell you it drops the resolution on my projection but it tells me on my LCD. I dont know wats going on and the darn thing is new "I mean my LCD". One other thing on my projection it plays the same using both cables unlike my LCD  it doesnt drop well i dont think so. If it did drop the most it drop the games to was 720p but it doesn't tell you like my LCD does.
kinmanc 01-19-07, 02:04 PM I tried connecting my PS3 to Denon avr-887 using HDMI. The Denon HDMI monitor out is connected to a Mits 62525 DLP. I got no picture, no sound! The Denon to Mits is working fine, because I have my cable box connected to the Denon with components and no problems. I also tried connecting the PS3 to the TV directly, via HDMI, and that works fine, so the problem is not in PS3, or the HDMI cable.
The denon web site has this on their FAQ:
"A set top receiver connected to an A/V receiver via HDMI may have trouble passing video signals through the A/V receiver even though a direct connection to the display seems to work fine. This has to do with the HDMI HDCP protocol being sent and received and the authentication process. This is not a fault of the receiver."
Hard to believe this is the problem, because PS3 must have worked with other receivers.
If I connect PS3 to my denon with components and optical link, what am I giving up?
DVD Freaky 01-19-07, 03:00 PM Is the PS3 startup screen supposed to be bright gray? On the Samsung LCD I have been looking at, the PS3 startup screen looks gray...isn't it supposed to be black? I have it connected to one of the HDMI inputs...it's a 1080p LCD.

I got that Logitech PS2 headset "Socom" that I used for my PS2, and now I'm pluging in it to my PS3 and the set is not working! Is that normal, cause I heard that those could be used with the PS3s. Is there something else I should do to make it work or what?
Please help! thank you!
Brian27 01-20-07, 12:51 AM I had posted this info. in another area too.....
A Denon customer service rep has blamed the PS3 for these receivers not outputting 7.1 PCM through the HDMI input. He says it is a compatibility issue on the PS3's side and not Denon's....He said for owners of these avr's to post it on the Sony PS3 forum to cause sony to release a firmware fix. Any other owners of these receivers here with any input about any of this???
ps...I own the 3806 and cannot get 7.1 pcm through HDMI. The guy who talked to the Denon rep was another avs forum member who owns the 4306. When I talked to a denon rep, he was telling me it does except 7.1 pcm through hdmi...but then again he told me in order to get 7.1 pcm that I had to...get this...push the 7ch stereo button  .
****Im editing to tell you that denon just told me that they forgot that some of these models lack a firmware that was installed during production in the early stages so some have the firmware and some dont...If you dont you can send it to denon and they will install it. If you cant get 7.1 pcm through hdmi, contact denon and tell them about the firmware issue.****
Take care,
Brian

stevenjw 01-22-07, 12:31 PM Incorrect. Displays that can DISPLAY 1080p content must be able to receive 1080P content. Think about it for a minute.
This is totally FALSE. The 2005 Sony SXRD XBR1 models only accept 1080i over HDMI. Their internal processing takes care of the 1080p deinterlacing, etc. This is a known short-coming of that model and was changed in the newer A2000 and XBR2 series that followed. It's likely that other older displays have this same issue considering the ATSC standard does not specify 1080p, but 1080i.
I don't have a PS3 (yet), so I'm not sure if it can output 1080i. Sony should have provided this capability for backwards compatibility with displays that can only accept 1080i like their own 2005 XBR1. I won't have that issue with either of my Sony SXRD products, but obviously others might.
For those that have this issue... Assuming there's not a 1080i output option on the PS3, then you need to inform Sony about this and request a software change to the PS3 that provides this feature. You can't change the display, so the solution will be at the source or you'll need to put a video processor in the chain that accepts 1080p and has 1080i as an output option.
AmigaDude 01-22-07, 12:49 PM myrtlebeach - Return it and get a replacement.
stevenjw - The PS3 can output 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The content (BD or Game) is the limiting factor since the PS3 does little conversion.

I have switched to component on my tv to watch other programming during downloads all the time and never had a problem. Using hdmi should not cause a problem. You are only switching inputs on the tv-it should not effect the ps3! But who knows- maybe there is some kinda clitch with the tv you are using- but that should not be the case. Try it again with your new ps3.
Incorrect. Displays that can DISPLAY 1080p content must be able to receive 1080P content. Think about it for a minute.
Wrong! I thought about it for 2 seconds and concluded that you are wrong. My JVC HD-ILA is 1080p but does not accept a 1080p input. It deinterlaces 1080i to 1080p quite nicely, though.
gator1130 01-25-07, 10:48 AM I am having a display problem with my PS3 on my RCA DLP TV. It works great when I am playing Tiger Woods Golf. When I try and play Madden or Need for Speed I get a black screen. I moved my PS3 to my plasma tv and everything works fine. I noticed that when I put Madden or Need for Speed in on my plasma, the resolution changes to something like 720 x 526. I can get to the PS3 main menu screen on my DLP but it is when the resolution changes for these two games that causes my screen to go black. Any idea how I can play these games on my DLP? Or am I just stuck having to play it on my plasma?
jroudabush 01-28-07, 07:11 PM I've done some research today into the internet speed of the PS3. I noticed that when I got to speakeasy.net and test, it was saying well above 11mbs and when I did it via wireless it was more like 3mbs on the down load. Upload was the same for both.
So I connected my laptop via ethernet and also got over 10mbs. I guess that it is a wireless issue that you don't get top speed out of the air.
My question is that when I use the ethernet cable, the downloads from the ps3 store are painfully slow. Anybody else notice this or is it quick? Is this a limitation from the ps3 store that they download so slowly?
Today the disc loader on my PS3 stopped working. It sounds like a helicopter when it tries load or eject the disc. So i called costumer service and the firs guy hung up on me. But after 2 hours of instant calling i finally got trough to another service rep and he helped me out. Sony will replace my PS3. It was purchased at release. It is normal
that things like this will happen on a new system.

Wireless is going to be slower than a wired connection, but it all depends on how busy the Internet is, how busy the server is, etc.
Sometimes it takes a long time to download anything, but usually you can download a 600MB file in a couple of hours over wireless. I usually do those overnight or I start them and switch over to watching TV or a DVD.
Upgrades might take about 10 minutes to download over wireless. It's not that much longer than wired to justify switching over and running cable over to the PS3.

Yes a lot of the first generation 1080p monitors would produce a 1080p picture from a 1080i signal but could not accept a 1080p input. I think that this only matters right now with Blue Ray which has content in 1080p. But the set will still accept a 1080i signal from the Blue Ray if you lower the settings on the PS3 (or other Blue Ray) and then upconvert to 1080p and I would guess that the picture would look nearly identical to a native 1080p signal throughput to a 1080p accepting TV.
I own a PS3, a Sony SXRD A2000, and a digital receiver with an optical in. The PS3 is upgraded to firmware 1.5, however there appears to still be a bug in my PS3. The PS3 frequently erroneously sends audio signals over HDMI that it should not.
Settings:
BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) = Linear PCM
BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) = Bitstream
Settings => Audio Output Settings = Digital Out (Optical)
I have the Audio Output Settings set to "Digital Out (Optical)" with both DD5.1 and DTS 5.1 checked on.
As I access special features such as the music video on the Underworld: Evolution disc (or any number of The Corpse Bride features), my A2000 often states the message "Unsupported Audio Signal. Please check your device output." The PS3 shouldn't even be sending an audio signal to my A2000 in this case, should it?
If I instead set the Audio Output setting to HDMI (with only 2Ch 44.1 and 48 kHz selected) the audio stream makes it to my A2000 fine with no warning messages. However, I don't care if the TV can get the audio signal or not. I just want my receiver to get the 5.1 optical outputs (with no warning messages on my TV). I seem to have all the settings correct.
FYI... I have done the special reboot (turning off the main power, turning on the main power, and then holding the on "button" until it beeps multiple times), and this didn't fix the problem at all.
Why is the PS3 sending an erroneous audio stream to my A2000? Do other A2000 owners have this same problem?

I would guess that was the case with over 90% of the model year 2005 1080P sets that were sold (Brillian and HP were the only exceptions that I remember).
What's your settings here?

What you quoted gave the answer:
I have the Audio Output Setting set to "Digital Out (Optical)" with both DD5.1 and DTS 5.1 checked on.
I probably could have been more clear:
Settings => Audio Output Settings = Digital Out (Optical)
The settings seem pretty straight forward. I'm trying to see if others have the same bug, or if this bug is somewhat unique to my console (in which case I'm returning it). I see no evidence that the TV is having an issue (though I have the speakers turned off, so it shouldn't warn me about an incompatible audio signal).
Megalith 02-01-07, 05:10 PM Does the PS3 have incorrect gamma?
The PS3 is unnaturally bright compared to my other devices, such as the 360 and HD-XA1.

I have played with it and if you select optical audio out on the ps3 and then play with a blu-ray disk and select the uncompressed audio it gives me the error on the tv as well. I had assumed it realized you can't transmit uncompresssed surround over optical and transmitted it via hdmi..
It always gives me the error with my hd-directv tivo as it transmits all audio over both optical and hdmi at the same time

Thanks for the response. Just to be clear on the PS3: you haven't found any way to output dolby 5.1 over optical without having TV HDMI audio errors during Blu-Ray disc special features. Correct?
I don't know, you would think Sony would have tested this issue with their own TVs.
Note: I tried version 1.51 firmware and it has the same problem.
teckademic 02-02-07, 08:14 PM what is AVC and do I turn it on? I am using an hdmi connection, but passing audio through optical. I don't have 1080p.

Hi AVBill;
I have exactly the same setup as you, and soon as I upgraded to 1.5 I started getting that error on DVD's, I haven't tried blu-ray yet... but I don't see why it would be any different... I just learned to ignore it, since the dialog goes away for me after about 5 seconds, and the sound still works perfectly from my reciever... Hopefully we'll get a firmware fix, glad I am not the only one with that problem. I also made sure that my Audio settings on my TV were set to off... but that didn't seem to help at all.
1.51 still has the issue for me too.

Raider,
Thanks for the confirmation (at least I know it is not just my PS3).
protoboard 02-03-07, 09:25 PM When I turn on my PS3, with a game like resistance already in it, it tries to start the game as it normally does, but I sometimes get an error message "an error occurred during the start operation" with an error code.(can post the code later). I can try to start the game from the XMB again and again, and even take the disc out and put it back in but it will not start. The only way I can get it to start is to put in talladega nights, let it start playing, then take it out and start resistance. Has anyone else seen this issue and know a fix?

My BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) is set for Linear PCM.

With these settings I still only receive audio from one device. With these settings above I only get audio from the TV. In order for me to get audio to my A/V reciever I have to switch my System Audio Output Format to Optical. Then if I do that I lose the sound to my TV. Something is not working. Please Help!
TripFoeYa,
This is the behavior I see as well with the addition that when I set the Audio Output to optical my A2000 issues an "Unsupported Audio Signal" message periodically. It sounds like a PS3 issue that hopefully Sony fixes someday.

Wondering if you have seen this issue, since your setup mimics mine pretty closely, I have noticed that the odd time during games and last night during "Crank" blu-ray that my screen would periodically go black for 1-3 seconds then come back.. wondering if I have a defective PS3 is all.. it only has happened maybe 4 times since I got the console, I don't mind so much in games... but in movies is really annoying..

I've only watched the Corpse Bride and Mission Impossible so far, and I didn't experience any random unexpected black screens. Note, I'm not using wireless, and I use the Blu-ray remote (i.e. no PS3 controllers are on). I've heard some conjecture that performance problems with Blu-ray playback might relate to either wireless or controller resyncing.
UPDATE (Feb 17th): Last night I saw my first "black" screen happen during Click. I've watched Open Season, Corpse Bride, Mission Impossible, Monster House, and Click. I've only experienced one non-reproducible black screen during Click.
UPDATE (Feb 27th): This has happened to me over half a dozen times now.
JRT2006 02-06-07, 03:44 PM I get the same unsupported audio error with my A2000 on the PS3. When i watched blue ray crank though i didnt get any black screens. I got a few frozen pictures like the disc may have been scratched or dirty or the lens was dirty.....but it was a brand new movie and I used compressed air to blow out the inside of the drive and had the same problem
Cocteau 02-07-07, 11:23 AM Hi All,
Okay, I'm just trying to get my arms around the HDMI - 1080P situation.
I have a Sammy 1080P LN-S4095 LCD, with HDMI in from the PS3.
On the initial Set-up, if I choose for it to automatically play the highest resolution, the screen goes crazy with flashing white snow, and it doesn't stop.
Fortunately I can see through the snow enough to restore to defaut.
So then when I do, and got to Display, I can place a checkmark next to 480P, 720P, 1080i just fine, but if I check 1080P, the flashing snow comes back.
So what's my rig capable of, or not capable of?
Will the PS3 signal play at 1080P on the Sammy or not?
Lastly, I ordered Gridion Gang since I read it was MPEG-4. I ran it last night and it read MPEG-2 in the upper corner on display.
What's up with that? So did Running With Scissors.
Thanks for any help.
I'm having a problem trying to get 1080p out of my PS3.. I've read post of people successfully achieving this but it's usually straight to the t.v. and not through an A/V receiver and when they do it's not the same brand/model as mines.. I really want 1080p resolution with 7.1ch. sound. After 5 days of reading and trying the solutions posted on the web... I've come to AVS Forum for help. Here's my set up:
*PS3(Monster1000HDMI)>OnkyoTX-S674>(Monster1000HDMI)>SonyLCD-52XBR
This connection works but the highest resolution is 1080i if I try programming the PS3 to output 1080p it will not play properly. The PS3 will put out 1080p if hooked straight to the tv but it will not provide me 7.1 sound to my Onkyo.
*XBox360>(HDComponentCables-OpticalCable for Audio)>Xbox>(HDCC-OC for Audio)>Playstation2>(HDCC-OC for Audio)>PelicanSystemSelectorPro>(HDCC-OC for Audio)>OnkyoTX-S674>(Monster1000HDMI)>SonyLCD
This connection works fine in both Video and Audio but the following is the best resolution I could get from each unit.
XBox360=1080p
PS2=480i
Xbox=480p
*Wii>(HDCC)>Onkyo>(MC1000HDMI)>SonyLCD
Best resolution is 480p
*PanasonicDMR-EH75V "DVD/Vhs/HDD Player-Recorder">(Monster1000HDMI)>OnkyoTX-S674>(Monster1000HDMI)>SonyLCD
This connection works fine but the best resolution is 1080i
Will changing my HDMI wires to the ones advertised as 1.3 and promise double the Bandwidth(10gigs) a possible cure to my situation? Are my MonsterCable1000 HDMI cables good enough? Any compatibility issues with any of my equipment? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
JRT2006 02-10-07, 01:23 AM One more problem here......I have an old Sony STR-K660P reciever capable of 5.1 dolby digital but when i reun the fiber optic chord from the PS# to the reciever, none of the games OR movies ever pick it up. The reciever is set on Input - Auto IN AFD - A.F.D Auto It reads on the recievers screen that the OPT chord is being detected but only outputs through the 3 front speakers and the sub. Now if I switch it to AFD - Pro Logic Movie I can get sorround sound in all 5 speakers and sub. Is there a special setting i should select in the audio settings in the XMB?
tingham 02-10-07, 10:12 AM Hello to All,
Does anybody know what the red, green, blue, and yellow squares next to the numeric numbers are for in the bd/dvd menu? I select them and it seems nothing happens. I think maybe they have something to do with the component output of the ps3- if you have the ps3 hooked up via component? I have my ps3 hooked up via hdmi and I cannot find any information on these colored squares. Anyone know what they are for?
hi im trying to run a dell 24" monitor thru a hdmi to dvi cable and its not working ,but hdmi works just fine on my sony hs-60
Does the PS3 have incorrect gamma?
The PS3 is unnaturally bright compared to my other devices, such as the 360 and HD-XA1.
It does on my Samsung LCD TV. I notice it only when viewing the XMB or during gameplay. Blu-ray playback has perfect black (no brightness issues).
I'm replacing my TV this March (getting the new Samsung LCD with 12,000 contrast). I'm hoping this problem doesn't manifest again.

As far as I know your TV should accept 1080p without a problem. Make sure you are connected directly to the TV (not through a switch or anything else). Also double-check your cable and make sure you are not going a long distance or near something throwing off a lot of interference.
You might want to post on the flat panel forum to see if other owners of the TV have had any problems.
FJ Merlin 02-13-07, 03:15 PM Hey guys, I searched this thread and didnt see anything like this here.
I have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my Denon 2807. As soon as I connected them the PS3 recognized the HDMI connection and automatically set all of the available audio options. Well, before I hooked it up via HDMI I had it connected with optical cables. When I had it with optical, the XMB, Madden 07 and all my PS2 games were showing up as 2 channel audio and the Denon would apply Dolby PLIIx and I would get 7.1 from the 2 channel source. But since I changed it to HDMI, everything shows up on the Denon as 7.1 and I know for a fact that some of these games DO NOT have 7.1. This shouldnt be an issue but it is forcing my Denon to handle the 7.1 as uncompressed multi channel in, which in turn doesnt allow me to apply any kind of Dolby PLIIx, and there is no sound coming from the center channel speaker because the Denon thinks its getting 7.1.
I hope this makes sense. I was just wondering if anyone else ran into this issue?
Ok guys, I need some help. I've only had the PS3 for about an hour, and already i've had the system freeze on me 13 times. Each time I do a hard restart (only thing I can do), and when it starts back up, it tells me the file is corrupt. Does this mean that I got a bad PS3 and that I need to return it?
I also tried to update to the 1.51 firmware, but each time I would try this at 55% of the download an error that started with 8002 came up and I was not able to continue.
Please help......

You could try downloading 1.51 onto your pc and installing it from a USB drive. It's worth a shot anyway. Otherwise exchange it.
BoSoxMole 02-16-07, 02:44 AM This might have been talked about before, but I don't want to go through the whole thread to find out an answer.
My PS3 isn't reading any USB device I put into it. Scandisk, nope. A USB Pen disk, nope. My iPod, nope. And not even an external hard drive. For example, when I connect my SD, it says there are no images. But there defiently is.
Now how do I get it to work? Do I HAVE to format it?
And is it possible to connect your iPod to your PS3?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Err, I figured it out.
However, the PS3 still doesn't regonize my iPod. Is it because I have a Mac and that is what it's formatted for?
Thanks.

The ipod music is copy-protected- the ps3 will not play songs from ipods. This is the ipod's fault and why I don't like Ipod's!
BoSoxMole 02-17-07, 02:11 PM But they play on my 360.
Hi everyone...brand new to the forums, had my PS3 since Jan and am using HDMI connection for both sound and video.
running a panasonic 52' flatscreen with hdmi input. Works fine with component cables but thats not what I want...
sorry for any sketchy info but thats all I got...been running fine for almost two months then it started up out of no where?
what do you think? could it be the hdmi cable?
I get that nifty flashing screen. Will stay on for about 3 seconds, then flash...
called tech support...apparently when I hooked it up in january, I didn't set it the hdmi up with AV component cables connected and it just now decided to flip out... reset everything, connected both sets of cables and reset it. working as intented...SONY ROCKS!!! now if I could just play guitar hero on the ps3 they would rock even more!
tingham 02-17-07, 06:40 PM But they play on my 360.
Microsoft has an agreement with apple and the 360 has the codec for playing the ipod I think it is AAC. You can try to plug the ipod in the ps3 and then hit display all-I believe it is the triangle button- And if the ipod file structure comes up you can start searching for the songs-but I heard you really have to look around. Sony might come to a agreement with apple on this issue and maybe sometime in the future with a firmware update you will be able to play your ipod video and music easily on the ps3. Lets keep our fingers crossed. But I would'nt hold my breath!!!
zoom555 02-18-07, 01:49 AM I have been trying to figure out how to get audio over HDMI from my PS3 to my Sony STR-DG1000 receiver. My setup is as follows: PS3 connected to receiver via HDMI cable (pass-through); receiver connected to TV (Sony KDS-50A2000) via HDMI.
In terms of settings, I have configured the PS3 to output audio by HDMI. I have configured my receiver so that it knows that the HDMI1 port is assigned to the Video 1 input.
I don't get any audio over HDMI with the above setup. If I change the audio output to Optical, I can hear everything loud and clear. I have tried two different HDMI cables (from different manufacturers), so I don't believe I have a cable problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm stumped - I don't know whether I have a component that isn't working or I've just missed something.
kozimor 02-18-07, 03:41 AM zoom, i have that receiver with a Ps3. Mine works fine. I'm not sure why you're using Video1 to access the ps3's HDMI port, I just use HDMI 1 on the remote with the ps3 connected to the first HDMI port on the receiver. The audio problem might be because you have the PS3 OS set up to transport audio over the toslink cable instead of over HDMI. You should be able to change this easily in the system settings on the cross media bar.

I am using the same receiver and TV that you are. I haven't had any problems with the audio from my PS3. I would start by changing the HDMI 1 port back to the original setting. You don't need to set it to Video 1. You also need to check your HDMI audio settings on the receiver. If you have it set to output audio to the TV, you won't be able to hear any audio formats that are not supported by the TV.
You can either output audio through your receiver only or change the audio settings of your PS3. You will have to do it manually as the automatic set-up will go by what your receiver is capable of.
ShaunoftheDead9 02-18-07, 05:45 PM How do you set up the 20g to accept a wirless connection? I have a wireless adapter but with no luck.
Savadave 02-19-07, 03:44 PM I also posted this in the direct view crt forums, because I'm not sure if this is a tv or ps3 issue but...
I recently hooked up a PS3 to a Sony KV-34HS510 via component cables. When I change the output resolution to anything besides the default 480i, I get a black screen with no picture. I've never had any problems with the inputs before, using the same component inputs to get 1080i from an hd cable box. Any ideas on why this is?
Also, I haven't gotten around to updating the PS3 software/firmware in any way. Did there happen to be an update that I need for this functionality?
Im having trouble getting on the net wirelessly.
Guy at Sony told me cause im getting only 64% sig , I cant connect.?
It sees my ip address but wont connect. Anybody help?
Make sure you have MAC address filtering set correctly (either disabled or you've added the PS3). Also, for the ocvious in me, make sure you got the right passwords :) Check the logs on the router. They should give you some clue.

You need a wireless bridge or you could try this- http://shop1.outpost.com/product/5067725?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
I am using a PS3 connected to an Onkyo sr604 reciever via HDMI with a 5.1 setup. What are the proper settings and selections in PS3 settings to get 5.1 PCM? Do I need to change something on the reciever?
I don't seem to get sound from my surround Left/Right speakers when playing PS2 games or demos/trailers off of the harddrive. I just want to make sure I am not missing something. Blue Ray movies are good and sound excellent through all 5 speakers. If I use optical audio out it gives me sound out of all speakers.
Is there something that I could have set up incorrectly or a way to choose all speakers? When doing the automatic HDMI audio set up in the PS3 dashboard, is there any option that I should/shouldn't choose?
I can't do that because my iPod doesn't show up on my PS3.
I was able to plug my ipod into the ps3 and it was listed (under audio) as USB device (IPOD). I hit triangle, waited for awhile and adirectory structure showed up. I hit tri again next to ipod control and was able to copy all songs to the ps3!
Here's a random question re: audio capabilities as I plan for my set up (will be getting ps3 shortly)...
I have a 720p lcd projector that I plan to use with the PS3 from time to time. I would like to utilize the HDMI connection to send the video to the projector, due to better video quality and less bulk under the rug (one cable). Unfortunately, my receiver (panasonic, 5.1 surround) does NOT have an optical in.
Is it possible to utilize the HDMI cable for video, yet simultaneously send the audio to a receiver using the component (red/white) cables?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.Component audio? Do you mean RCA L+R? Then yes you can do that, but you'd be much better served buying a cheap surround setup, especially for games and movies.

Does the panasonic have coaxial in? If it does you can get a optical to coaxial converter. They are hard to find but they do make them. I am sure they are on the internet somewhere. If you use hdmi I don't think you can use component also?
Megalith 02-23-07, 10:44 PM It's a mistake to ever use a game console's DACs.
ggeraci55 02-24-07, 02:46 AM I just purchased a PS3 and I hooked it up to my Hitachi PD427800TA via my JVC RX-D702B. I can get picture and sound but I can't get surround sound. My receiver says Linear PCM. This connection is by way of HDMI to receiver DVR/DVD in and HDMI monitor out to HDMI monitor in on the TV. I am not very AV savvy so can you help. I also have a Pioneer DVR 633H hooked up via component cables and a Wii with component cabels.

Why?
I'm not sure I understand how this is working. When I use a 2GB USB key with *.jpg or *.mpg files on it (in the key's root directory), the PS3 can't see them. However my 360 can see them fine.
Can the PS3 read (and hopefully stream) these types of a files off a USB key?

Thank you, I'll try that! :)
tingham 02-27-07, 09:46 PM I just put some mp3's on the ps3's hard drive. They are lined up in a row under the music icon. I can play one song at a time. I do not see an option to play-all. Does anyone know if it possible to play all your mp3's at once on the hard drive without having to select them one at a time? I have selected shuffle while one song is playing but after the song is done the ps3 just goes back to the to the mp3 track list again.
TheLion 02-28-07, 08:29 AM Hi there.
About a week ago my PS3 controller suddenly started acting really weird. It is working like it should BUT in certain menus it is behaving really strange. For example, when I try to quit a game or shut down the system I press the PS button -> the menu comes up -> I'm able to select the menu items BUT none of the buttons are working. I cannot choose any menu item -> therefor I can never shut down my system with the controller nor can I quit a game. I always have to manually shut the PS3 down with the "button" on the front. This happens always when I'm going into this (quite essential) menu... It never happened before. I really don't know what changed. I tried to restore the system (default settings + complete format), I just upgraded to 1.54. Nothing helps...
Another thing is when I open the type menu the controller starts to act weird again and enters letters randomly...
The controller itself, with all its buttons, is working without a problem outside these menus...
PLEASE, has anyone made simular experiences and can provide a hint how to solve this problem. Please help me, I'm quite desperate as I purchased the PS3 as import with no warranty whatsoever. Thank you.
edited: btw it doesn't make any difference if I connect the controller per USB cable or wireless.
Tried a search for this answer, but couldnt find anything. How do you delete demos off the hard drive? Thanks.
TheLion 02-28-07, 01:02 PM Problem solved!!! It was indeed just a stuck L2 button... Don't know why everything else but this menu and the typing/text box worked fine but it's ok now. Thanks everybody!

trigger532 03-02-07, 11:04 PM I have my ps3 connected to the Netgear HDXB101 Powerline HD Ethernet Kit. This is connected to my router upstairs. Everytime i play madden online, I get lag. Pictures from the online store take long to load and downloading updates and trailers take forever. I have a feeling this may be due to interference from another wireless ethernet bridge (slinglink) I have set up in the house for my slingbox av.
Is there anything I can do to improve the speed? I have charter cable modem service (3 Mbps). THANKS FOR THE HELP!
willmgordon 03-06-07, 04:33 PM Trigger, your powerline is Wireless?(only way interference could be happening). If so I would suggest purchasing the ethernet only version I have seen it for under $25 on froogle. There is also the possibility that the distance you are attempting to cross is degrading the powerline signal, can you hookup your modem by the PS3 to see if having it right there improves your speed? If so, then you may need to shift your setup around so your components are closer.
willmgordon 03-06-07, 04:34 PM Also, you can switch broadcast signals, see if separating your networks to like channel 1-3 for one and 7-11 for the other helps.
I can't get the thing to connect to the net wirelessly. It can see my router fine, and gets an IP address from it, but it fails at the interenet test giving error 80710102. I've tried searching but come up wit nothing.
Anyone else have a problem with the PS3 browser not saving the AVSForum cookie? I was able to sign in to AVS and change pages a couple of times, but after a couple of page changes it didn't recognize me as being signed in anymore. I searched and saw one comment that alluded to this being a problem, but I couldn't find a thread addressing it.
jeeves_tremor 03-15-07, 09:07 PM I have a problem connecting my PS3 to my Pagnor 42" Plasma with an HDMI cable going to a HDMI-to-DVI converter leading to the DVI input on the TV. I know for a fact that my TV supports HD via DVI. When I go to change the video settings to HDMI, while still connected with the composite, the screen goes blank for a little while, and when i change my TV to the DVI input, nothing appears, and then the picture will re-appear on the composite setting again. The cable is brand new, the adaptor is brand new.

Anyone else want to take this? Been there, done that, too tired.
Simon1921 03-15-07, 10:40 PM I tried to turn on my PS3 last night and no matter what I did all I got is a blinking red light. Sony says they are not sending me a new one but a "Refurbished" unit. Has there been any other cases of PS3s dying?
I've got a bit of a problem/bug with the card reader on my 60gb.
I've just been playing with it and it's like clockwork. Put the card in, the light flashes a lot and it doesn't mount. Take it out, put it back, the light flashes a little and it mounts. Take it out, and repeat. Wondering if it's something about the card it doesn't like. It's odd it's so predictable. Too much so for it to be a hardware fault surely?
jeeves_tremor 03-16-07, 02:45 PM I think I might of figured it out. I looked through the manual of my TV and have concluded that it isn't HDCP compliant or compatible or however you put it. Can someone confirm this for me?
peterjun 03-18-07, 05:40 AM I just got a ps3 and am having problems,
I have the Samsung LN-S4695D and connecting it via HDMI,
I get "searching for signal" screen pop ups during transitions between blu-ray movie/games. The screen will come up for 3-5 seconds and then it goes back to the source.

Mine does it but only for a split seccond, which I assume is normal?
I have a Denon 2307ci and a PS3 , had both for about a month now ,today out of the blue The Game and BD portion start loosing the signal. I have it hooked up completely HDMI , PS3 -> Receiver -> Sony TV. the signal drops for about 5 sec and wile watching Ice Age 2 it did it about 20 times. I checked all my HDMI outputs/input and all seem snug. Do you know whats making the signal drop?
Handshake?
leftheaded 03-19-07, 02:15 PM Mike:
Your unit is defective - that is not normal. Take it back. Sounds like it is overheating and the internal fan is not working right. Does it get hot when it skips?
It doesn't skip, the PS3 just freezes and locks up. I have to switch the power off then on, and then it will work fine again.
Mike
I have this problem. SHould I exchange mine?
ps - My wife can't stand the PS3 because it's so tempramental - excessive heat, the process involved to switch movies (you can't just eject the disc while it's playing and then put in another - the PS3 menu won't come up), the controllers fast forward or rewind when you set them down (because there's not lip around the L1 & L2 buttons like the old PS2 controllers - this is a major design flaw in my opinion)

Heat should only be a problem if it doesn't have adequate ventilation.
The controlers were designed for games & they work just fine at that, there secondary function is as a remote for movies, that is no design flaw, that's why they made a seperate remote control for $25.
cuadra11 03-20-07, 01:05 PM I just got my PS3 last night. I have HDMI hooked up to my HDTV and both audio and video work fine. When I change the audio to optical out the play a game the screen starts to flicker like crazy. The only way to stop the screen from flickering is to change the audio to HDMI. Does any one know how i can fix this ? has this happened to any one else
Kevin12586 03-20-07, 01:11 PM If you have HDMI in/out why are you using the optical out?
cuadra11 03-20-07, 01:42 PM I want to use my home theather system but it doesn't support HDMI only optical. Do you know why that's happening?
I have had no problems with mine I run the HDMI to the TV and the optical to the receiver and everything works fine. Is your firmware up to date?

I have to agree with the remote being very touchy when watching movies but like the moose stated it is a game remote and you can buy a separate for movies so thats not a problem. But the heat is a whole sperate issue my unit sounds like its going to take off after a hour of use. I moved it to the bottom shelf in my cabinet added a small fan in the unit drilled over a dozen 2" air holes in the back of the cabinet adjusted the front doors so they have about 1/8" gap all around and it still gets scary hot. I now try to leave the cabinet door open whenever I use my unit but with a child in the house that cant always happen. I guess next I will have to put more fans in or remove the entire backing of the cabinet.
cuadra11 03-20-07, 04:07 PM Yes i did the firm ware update last night. What are your settings like?
moosepilot 03-21-07, 03:05 PM I am a current PS3 owner that is shopping for a complete multimedia solution. I have installed YDL 5.0 and VLC player on my PS3. Now I need a 42-47 inch 1080p lcd and a HTIB that will work seemlessly with the the PS3.
Sony Offers the HT-DDW900 which has HDMI Pass through. It accepts 2 HDMI inputs and outputs 1 HDMI along with a handful of component and composite. In theory it sounds great, One HDMI for PS3 and One For Cable. Other HTIB offer HDMI inputs and ouputs but do not state that it can handle 1080p only 1080i. Sony Uses the Term "Passthrough and doesn's state the resolution. Need more info from sony.
.. Now I am considering the Westy LVM-47w1. I am aware of the issues with HDMI to HDMI. From what I have read on this forum, hdmi to DVI is a viable workaround to acheive 1080p with the 1.0 Firmware. With that said..... I am nervous to see how it would behave with the HTIB Passthrough.
I have not committed myself to any LCD or HTIB. I would appreciate any advice anyone has on a successful setup. Reading all these posts makes me very wary about just purchasing something that the manufacturer claims. Its a scary place to be. The PS3 is a powerful device but its worthless without a proper configuration. Thank you in advance for any info.
The Moosepilot.

Find a way to child proof it and get it out of the cabinet and into an open area is all I have to say. You don't want an expensive burnt out brick sitting in there.
