With the new update, 1.9, when viewing photos zooomed in (widescreen) it always reverts ack to letter box, with the next photo, is there a way to make it stick, zoomed in/wide?

Hi everyone,

I bought a fairly basic Sony DAVHDX466 Home theatre package for my PS3 and V3000, but I can't seem to get the PS3 audio to run through the home theatre.

I've tried to use the multifunction cable supplied with the PS3 to send the audio to the receiver, while using an HDMI to send the visual to the TV, but that doesn't seem to work. There is no HDMI input in the receiver.

Even if that did work, the PS3 suggests you can't get 5.1 that way. Do I need a better home theatre or is there a workaround I can try?

A million thanks!

You need at least an optical (Toslink) connection to get 5.1.
I'm not sure but I don't think the multifunction connection functions when you are using HDMI, you need an optical cable & then go into settings to output the audio through the optical cable.

I downloaded the newest patch...

Have a problem with my controller. X and O buttons do not respond from time to time. Also, when playing Ridge Racer my NOS turns on as soon as it fills. Not sure if this is a controller problem or what. Everything was fine till yesterday nad then controller started not wot work well. I charged it and everything.

I too, since the last few updates, have a problem with the controller buttons. Whenever I exit the Playstation Store the controller does not respond anymore or when I try to turn off the controller or system (using the controller PS button) only the D-pad works so I can scroll the options but X and O (and all other buttons including PS) become inactive. Both controllers do this. The only way around this is using the PS button on the DVD/BD remote or getting up to restart the PS3 using the console buttons...

Anyone else has this issue?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has experimented much with using the 'remote play' as an ad-hoc front end for the PS3. Specifically, I'd like to use my PSP to control playback and view UPnP music directories, while still assigning the audio output to the optical or hdmi on the ps3 console. (i've only tried the hdmi so far and can't find any way to make it work.)

I fear that it's probably not possible given current firmware; has anyone else looked into this?

Thanks!

I got my PSP to work remote, the PS3 on the PSP, but all the games are not remote play yet. but its good for everything else, pictures, video, web, but I havnt tried the music yet, I havnt put any music into the ps3 yet.

There appear to be a lot of issues when DVI gets involved. I hope Sony is working on it!

I have version 1.9 and have not been able to use the PS3 HDMI output via
a HDMI to DVI adapter. My television says "no signal" I have a HLN4365W1 model TV. If anyone has had better luck I sure would like to hear about it!

If your set is using DVI as an input, I'm guessing it's an older set. That would lead to the possibility that the set will not accept a 1080p input. Try setting the PS3 to say 720p out.

How do I do that? I haven't found a screen that will let me do that on the PS3.

Unfortunately I already scoured the manual. No help in there for my problem. When I choose the HDMI setting the only thing I get on the TV is a blank screen, no further options.

Thanks for the suggestion in any case.

The link I sent you EXACTLY represents the behavior of the PS3 with the 1.9 upgrade. Did you really "scoure" the manual? I just went out and tried mine and if you read the page and followed the instructions, it works as documented.

I'll assume you did see the part about

If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically adjust the resolution (the HDMI device must be turned on). In this case, the screen for selecting resolutions will not be displayed.

You also have the option to select custom in which case you can select any ofthe supported formats shown.

Now call me insane but I'd have to assume you've got the device on so you can see what you're doing :)

If you did all this and still get no signal, I'd bet the adapter isn't passing all the correct signals, one of your cables is bad/not completely connected, or your TV isn't providing what is expected.

Thanks for taking the time to check on your TV. I must use the Sony supplied composite cables to get the signal from the PS3 to my TV. The PS3 doesn't autodetect the the HDMI cable when it is attached to my TV. When I choose the HDMI out on the Video Display set up, and then quickly switch to my DVI input on my TV, there is only a blank screen. I have tried several HDMI cables, 3 different adapters all to no avail.

It is frustrating since one person has said he has my same set up and has no problems with his HDMI output working properly. I also have several HDMI devices (Sat receiver, DVD, ATSC tuner) which operate perfectly well with the TV.

I even took the PS3 to another TV and used the HDMI output successfully on that TV.

You must be using an HDMI switcher or AV receiver? Have you tried swapping ports on the switch box?

I have a Sammy HLN617W DLP and it's been my experience that if it was a problem with something like 1080P (that our TVs can't handle) or HDCP we get a totally different error message on the TV. The only time I have seen "no signal" is if the source player is off or the source player is not sending video over that jack that the TV is set to.

So, since you said you tried different cables, adapters, and tried the PS3 on a different TV the only other thing I can think of is the switch box/receiver.

Good thought but I've been trying the HDMI ouput directly to the TV using a HDMI->DVI adapter of course.

Am I the only one having problems?

I posted this in the Initial Impressions thread, but I'll post it here. I have a ridiculously fast cable connection (20mbps down avg), my PS3 is connected wirelessly, and my software update from 1.51 to 1.9 is INSANELY slow! We're talking 1% a minute about! Any ideas? Possibly having to do with the first update the system has done? That shouldn't have anything to do with it though. I'm extremely upset, and anxious as hell to use my PS3! I'm staring at this progress bar, getting drunk with my buddies, and about to throw it out the window! Thanks for any advice/input.

I always download updates from here to the computer..then transfer the file to a flash drive and use the flash drive to update my ps3. Updates take long for me also for some reason...maybe because people are doing it all the time?

Just started up the PS3 for the first time this morning. I was able to get the wireless working and download newest update (v1.9) after a couple of attempts. Copied over my PS2 memory card. Put in LEGO Star Wars (ep 1-3) for PS2. The PS3 recognizes it as a "Playstation 2 format disc," but says that due to some error, I can't play the game and I should go check the compatability list on the PS website. The PS site says the game should work except for maybe an occasional hang up.

Anybody have any suggestions for why a PS2 game won't load on the PS3? PS site says it's compatible.

thx

I updated my system for the first time a few days ago and bought my system when it first came out, and my update was very fast. I am hooked up via wired ethernet though and have read of problems with some of the wireless routers used in conjunction with the PS3.

It comes with a 1 year manufacturers warranty. You could ask about ext. warranty's from the place of purchase or Sony. I think Target has the cheapest ext. warranty out there, but am not sure.

Thanks for your quick reply. I plan on picking up the Costco bundle for 579.00, as now the 60 Gig PS3 are no longer in production and who knows what while happen with the 499.00 price drop/firesale?

Looking forward to becoming format neutral in the area of Hi-Def movies.

New PS3 user here. Got the new 80GB version a few weeks ago. Initial setup went ok - downloaded system update, plus Folding@Home. I have it connected to a new Toshiba 42LX177 LCD and haven't experienced any HDMI problems, though it's connected directly to the PS3 for now until I get an Onkyo 905.

After the first week or so though, I'm having problems. 1.92 downloaded and I was hoping it would help but again yesterday & today it is still giving me grief.

PS3 freezes at various points during games and only a hard power reset works. Often won't respond to the controllers after being turned off. It doesn't seem to get extremely hot - I do have it sitting on top of my pre-pro but on "tiptoes" so there is about 2" clearance under it.
Folding@Home completed 16 units of work in the initial week but now it never gets the next one. I can connect to the website for stats, but can't do work. Today at lunch I started it up, it seemed to actually start for the first time in a while but then stopped at 500 on progress bar, and restarting got nowhere.
Last night I turned it on after 1.92 had installed earlier in the day and got a message along the lines of "Application [] is attempting to complete..." (didn't write it all down) and the system was unresponsive, hard reset required.

So far my PS3 experience has been very frustrating.

I just bought Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 today and I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to a Harman/Kardon 247. I get the Multichannel PCM when I start it up, but when I go into Multiplayer, my reciever switches over to Dolby Digital (the screen displays 2/0/.0) and I no longer get any sound. Any idea on what is going on?

So here's what's happening... Only noticed this after installing the last update..
My kids have some PS2 games they play, when we load them the screen will go black and nothing will happen.. can't get back to the main menu, pressing the ps3 button on the controller doesn't work either, so I have to flip the switch on the back of the system, which can't be to good to do' right? It doesn't happen everytime though.. that's what's weird.. has anyone else noticed this??

thanks for any feedback..

I am having this issue with PS2 games also, didn't see any replies on what could be wrong. I am wondering if its some setup issue or if its broken. Everything else works fine, PS3 games, blu-ray movie disks, but every PS2 game I have tried basically blanks the screen and locks up the machine. Anyone have any ideas or is making a service call the only option?

I 2nd that :) Btw, I just exchanged my PS3 since the previous one was freezing up at a blank screen on PS2 games. I've noticed the new one takes a second or two longer to shut down and it does 3 beeps. Is that normal?

would you or anybody have any idea as to when and if sony will be updating new firmware for the DOLBY HD,DTS HDMA codecs?

dkny75
09-12-07, 10:44 AM
The PS3 can already internally decode Dolby TrueHD. No one has an ETA on an upgrade to DTSHD-MA. Keep in mind that currently the PS3 decodes the TrueHD stream and outputs it as PCM. It cannot output raw bitstream for either codec but it may or may not be implimented as a firmware upgrade.

1.) Can I use a PlayStation 2 eye-toy video camera with a PlayStation 3 for things other than eye-toy games, i.e. video chat or video mail?

2.) I have a Logitech game pad for my computer that is identical to a Playstation 2 controller (made for XP, it's USB, and rumble). Would I be able to hook that up to my PlayStation 3 and use it for games?

3.) Is there anyway to change my PSN id other than creating a new user account? (When I get "Warhawk" I'd like to play as a different PSN id in the beginning. Do you have an option to create a unique ID in Warhawk?)

Thanks!

Hey guys is there any way I can get the PS3 to output a 480i signal to my sdtv? The settings are hdtv settings. I took my PS3 from home, (which is connected to an hdtv) and i'm trying to use it on my friend's sdtv and there is no picture or sound when I turn it on using the regular composite cables. Any way to tell the PS3 I'm connecting it to an sdtv without going back to connect it to my hdtv and change the settings?

Try using the cables that came in the PS3 box. Composite cable can't pass an HD signal so I would expect the PS3 to default to 480i hopefully not 480p.

I'm having problems with my PS3's audio output. It was either a firmware update or me fiddling with the sound options when I played a blu-ray movie, but now a lot of voice tracks during in game cut scenes, and like the narrator for the skate demo is extremely low and muffled. For examples, the voices in some trailers like for Jericho and Wheelman are very low and almost unhearable. Everything else is fine including other audio.

I have my PS3 and everything else running through a cheap Sony DVD all in one home theater thingy (not much of an audiophile, but it used to sound alright). Bypassing that and using my TV's speakers doesn't change it, so I'm assuming it's a problem with my PS3 or a setting.

When I go into PS3's audio options I'm checking the box for Dolby 5.1 which I assume is the standard. There's also two Linear PCM options that are checked and grayed out which I cannot change. Anyone know what it could be?

e: I should probably add I'm using an HDMI hookup and I've tried doing a reset to default settings but not yet a full system reformat.

I'm so tempted to pick up a PS3 this week but there is one question that I've been meaning to ask for sometime now. How does the PS3 handle BD titles on a native 720p display?
I'd much rather prefer to have BD titles display at 720p rather than 1080i on my display.

It will play games at 720p but blue ray movies at 1080i or 1080p
it seems there will be an upgrade eventually to do the movies in 720p, apparently. sometime in the not too distant future.

The PS3 currently plays Blu-rays in 720p resolution, it was allowed a few months ago with a firmware update.

for movies now I didnt bother to check so I'll try that nexttime when playing BD movie

I'm having a weird problem today. I have a fairly new SDTV and I bought some Sony brand PS3 component cables to hook up to it. I was also moving things around today and I had unhooked the system and set it back up in a different area. I turned it on with the standard composite cables and noticed lines moving toward the top of my TV, which I hadn't noticed before. I tried the new component cables and noticed the same thing happening, although it was a little less noticeable. I then tried switching back to the same composite cables I had been using earlier and the lines were back, but they were extremely noticeable. Far more than before, and they jump out at you immediately.

The weird part is that I hadn't seen these lines before, and once I switched to the component cables and back to composite, they became far more noticeable than ever. With component (which I plan on using) it isn't that bad, but they're still there. I have an AV receiver and I was able to make the lines less noticeable by connecting the PS3 straight to the TV rather than through the receiver to the TV.

I'm a little new to all of this (I've just recently started getting together a small home theater set up) and I'm not sure what the problem here is or what I could do to fix it. Any advice?

EDIT: After a little searching I found the problem (ground loop) and fixed it by using a 3 to 2 prong adapter.

I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my Vizio VX32L and optical to my Onkyo S590S receiver. I get 5.1 surround sound with DVDs and Blu-rays, but I only get stereo during PS2 games like God of War 2 (haven't tried PS3). Even on the menus, I don't seem to have the DTS or DD signal turn on in my receiver.

In Sound Options, I made sure digital optical out was activated, but the next screen had a lot of options I'm not sure what to do with - DD, DTS, 4 Linear PCM options, and so on. I've tried checking them all, and just the DD/DTS options, but still nothing.

Any ideas?

Hey guys I'm new around here but I've heard many great things about this site and I'm glad to be a member of this great community.

I have a question for those that play their PS3 on a LCD computer monitor. I recently purchased the LG L246WP monitor since it was native 1080p and for the price point I thought it's a great buy. The games on the monitor look spectacular through HDMI and 1080p looks absolutely stunning.

The problem I'm running into right now is playing Blu-ray and DVD movies. To me the picture quality of the movie playback I'm experiencing is lacklustre. I've only tested one Bluray movie on the PS3 and that was the Transporter (a friend had it so I decided to borrow it to test the Bluray picture quality). I've tried some DVDs since the PS3 can now upscale up to 1080p through HDMI and again I wasn't inpressed with the results. I don't get how my games can look so great on it yet the movies do not.

So my question to you guys is what sort of settings should I be looking at with the LG L246WP monitor in the hopes of matching up the movies to the standard that I've been seeing with my games? If anyone has this partcular monitor would they be able to provide any assistance for me? Thanks again and I hope to get to know everyone better on this site.

I was a bit concerned since the last time I actually followed the PS3, I remember reading something about PS3 scaler issues. So yeah, you answered my question. Much appreciated.

I'm having the same issues.... some games actually used the ps2 system setting of 16:9 to determine whether the game would be in widescreen or not (burnout revenge for example). For me, it was unplayable as it was way too blurry and bad looking on my 1080p set. What upconverting settings are you guys using? normal? or double? I coudln't find any documentation telling me what each did.

I tried the Sammy 4661 thread and thought I might try here. I have a PS3 with the 1.93 firmware and a Sammy 4661 1080p set. I bought my first BR disk - Galapogos (1080p) yesterday. The start of the movie comes across at 1080p when you see the FBI warning and BBC HD intro. From there on, everything is in 1080i. Any ideas? This is really disappointing since I would like to get more BR movies, but if they are in 1080i, I can just go back to my Denon 2900 DVD player and get just as good of picture...

As I understand it, Galapagos is 1080i because that's the resolution it was filmed in.

Hello, Just got my PS3 yesterday (and updated to 1.9FW) and have been researching the forums in terms of calibration.

Reading through all the new updates and stuff...I am really confused...is there a good common setting for video image in terms of RGB (FULL, limit), super white, and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr settings??
I have read posts in avs that claims that having BTB, WTW or any optimal settings for BD/DVD looks greats, but when playing DLed trailers or games, the setting looks horrid since they use different color space. I am using this baby to its full potential, so I am not just going to only watch movies or only play games and do not want to switch back and forth between settings all the time.

So again, is there an optimal setting that can be set for both? It seems to be it should be possible since XMB/games and DLed Videos are RGB, while BD and DVDs are in Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr (please correct if wrong) so the setting should be independent of each other...but from what I read, this is not so...

This is what I've been working on for the last couple days. Using the GetGray calibration DVD I've found that the correct settings for DVD are Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr with Superwhite enabled. I didn't realize that there was a difference between discs and the trailers or games. I would like some feedback on this too. Anyone?

Oh, also, I thought you were supposed to calibrate your TV to not display blacker than black or whiter than white. No matter what settings I use, my TV will always display whiter than white using GetGray calibration. I can make the blacker than black disappear though by turning down the brightness on my Samsung LCD.

^^^ When I use RGB - Full on my Aquos it definitely give me darker blacks but it is actually too much in my opinion. It ends up crushing them. I have mine set to Y Pb/CbPr/Cr and superwhite on. Even by cranking up brightness on RGB - Full it is to hard to get the good balance of black and detail I get with Limited.

It changes due to the time of day, season, etc. It's normal. I thought the same thing when I first got mine. The first couple of times I played were at night and then when I played during the day and it was white (winter) I thought something was messed up.

... bought my first BR disk - Galapogos (1080p) yesterday. The start of the movie comes across at 1080p ... everything is in 1080i. Any ideas? This is really disappointing since I would like to get more BR movies, but if they are in 1080i, I can just go back to my Denon 2900 DVD player and get just as good of picture...

HUH? I'd better trade in my system and get that Denon, if it truly makes a 480p look as good as 1080i. Anywho, it seems most everyone else thinks the DVD looks great! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11902751

I’m on my second PS3, ser. 133844XXX, Feb. 07 build. The first was ser. 133863XXX, Feb. 07 build. Both have version 1.5 OS. The first would work its way up to the third fan level sitting out in the open, when idle in the XMB. The second will stay on fan level two, until you insert and play a bluray or PS2 disk, then it immediately hits fan level three. Once either one hits level three, it will not return to level two, even when idle, without a restart. There is also a slight, approx. 1KHz, tone on top of the fan noise. Fan level three is as loud as a powerful PC, in the 10’x18’ room that it is in.

There is a thread on the official Playstation forums discussing loud fans on certain Jan. 07, 1332XXXXX PS3’s. Has anyone bought a loud PS3 that was tamed by a software update? Should I just try for a third that is away from this problem ser. number range? Do all PS3 hit fan level three when playing a bluray in an approx. 70 degree room?

Need some help guys, I have not experienced drop outs as described in another thread on my Samsung 4061f but am having serious issues with the PS3 on boot up. I could be playing fine for hours on end the suddenly boot the PS3 and I am unable to switch to any of the HDMI inputs via the source button.... At first I thought it was an issue with the PS3, had that replace, now it's happening on the second unit. I've tried two different HDMI cables...seems to happen more frequently on the cable that's PS3 (1080P, v1.3) certified. Please any suggestions!!! I flashed to firmware 1032 from 1029. Board is 1009, which should be ok concerning the HDMI handshaking issue...

Any help would be much appreciated...TIA.

Hi
I am new to this thread.. but certainly not to AVS...
yesterday I just bought the new 80G PS3... 1st and foremost because of the all the good press, the many cababilities and mainly for the excellent Blu-Ray reviews and to boot ...also the great price offer at $499+ 5 free movies..

However before I start hooking it up I have read more of the reviews and the connection options and what you get (or don't get).. ie HDMI only give 1080p and my initial reaction is it has me taking a step back

I have a dedicated theater (7.1 set up) where I want to install this, I have a Sharp 10000 PJ (720p) which only has the DVI, (no HDMI connector), plus the obvious component inputs etc.
My receiver is the Pioneer Elite 49TXi with i-link and I have the matching Pioneer Elite 47Ai DVD unit connected to it via the i-link, it works great.

I use the DVI-HDMI cable to connect to my cable box (only current componentr with HDMI) for HiDef TV.

Now I was hoping to take the next step up to Blu Ray using the PS3..

My questions are ...without an HDMI connection on the receiver OR the Sharp PJ, will I be able to even see a 720p signal from my projector or just 480p, I was thinking of switching over the DVI-HDMI cable to the PS3 and connect it to the from PJ to PS3, but with the new 1.3 protocol etc. etc does any one here have an opinion on that senario.. will it even work.. or do I just go with component (of course I have to get the special Sony cables) can I get 720p...
I may upgrade PJ and/or receiver in the future but that is not in my immediate plans (the wife would not like that...) hard enough just upgrading to PS3

Also I have SACD's and would love to use them on the PS3, I do have another optical input connection option on the receiver.. will that work for SACD and give me minimum 5.1 audio...

I am not into games and may only dabble if I can make it perform to my expectations on Blu-ray, I am really excited about the possibilities with the 80 g storage for photo and music CD's
I hope someone here can give some feedback or guidance...
this forum was a great help when I built my theater 2 years ago, I feel I will get a better answer here than questioning Sony, Sharp etc...
I just don'e want to start, open the box etc. and find out it is can't do what I wnat because of my system limitations, and then not be able to return it to Best Buy.
Thx
Peter

have you tried resetting the console? turn the power switch on the back off, then hold the power on button while turning the switch on and it will revert to the most basic settings. if it is set up for 1080P out via HDMI and you are hooked up at 480i via composite, it wont work (as far as i know)

When you turn on the PS3 keep your finger on the power button on the front there for about five seconds till you here another beep after the initial start up beeps. This will have the PS3 auto detect the TV and allow you to set it to the appropriate display settings ex: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p.

My amplifier is optical (yamaha 5790)

Other than that, I have a couple save game folders for Folklore and GT4. That's it. No music, movies, pictures etc. I figure I should have at least 55 Gb free space on the drive. I can't find anywhere to actually find out how much free drive space there is.

I deleted the RnC Demo and that allowed the full game to install and I could play.

Anyone had this problem ? How can I find out what the drive space usage is ? Does the PS3 use up massive amount's of drive space for system updates ? Is there a limited amount of space available for game install or something ?

Any help is appreciated. I don't want to have to uninstall a game everytime I want to play a new one.

Thanks

Vizio GV47L TV connecting PS3 through HDMI, running 1080p. When PS2 games are upscaled, they don't take up as much space as they should. 4:3 games don't take up full vertical space. 16:9 games have same problem with large black border on sides. This happens on all PS2 games. DVDs, PS3 games, bluray all play fine. Any ideas?

Check your connections for any loose or unseated connections. Maybe swap out the video cable if you have a back-up. Otherwise it's time to call sony support.

Hmm, well I'm assuming you have two video connections, the original single RCA video jack (yellow) going to the back of your tv. When you switch to HDMI for video output, did you change your tv to the HDMI input? Otherwise your probably playing at 480i instead of 1080p which would account for the fuzziness.

1080i to 720p resolution switching issue here -

I have a Pioneer 5070 and I have my new 40 GB PS3 connected via HDMI. I let the system automatically detect the video settings and have been running at 1080i. The problem that I am having is when the system switches from 1080i in the XMB to 720p for a game, most of the time the screen just goes black and I can't do anything / see anything onscreen. Has anybody else had a problem with the switch from 1080i resolution to 720p causing a black screen?

Thanks for any info. I looked through the threads but couldn't find anything that was directly related.

I'll try to get to the point, when using HDMI on my PlayStation 3 (only console or device I use HDMI with) the PlayStation 3 will start my game/bluray movie and then it goes into some resolution change, or that's what it looks like to me. But still displays at the choose 720p resolution, anyways, it will start and will make like a scratch/popping noise from my TV speakers, kind of like when you switch TV channels, but it's a blank station. Now through out the game/movie everything looks and sounds fines. But this worries me, could it my new Sony BravIa kdl26s3000? Or my PS3? Did the same thing with my old TV with hdmi.

I love this TV, would hate to take it back, and would rather exchange my ps3. Also the picture is amazing, but how can I get more out of it?

Well guys I hate to admit it but my PS3 is dead! I played it for a couple of hours then turned it off, about 30-45 minutes later I went to play a movie and no go. Im getting a red blinking light. I read the book on this and the manual states that it overheated and to press the button so that the red light stops blinking and stays solid, after it cools it is supposed to turn green and the system will run again. My system never ran again. The light will turn green for about two seconds and the fans will turn on,then it will beep and go back to a blinking red light. That was last night and this is today so it obviously it had all night to cool off. I called Sony and they said they will send a box and that I am to include: PS3, controller, AV cord, USB cord, power cord and eithernet cord. They said it would take 3-4 days for the empty box to arrive and 3-4 days after they receive it for them to send me a completely new unit. Thats right a COMPLETELY NEW UNIT, not the original repaired.

OK, so now I know I am also not the only one with this exact same problem, as you have done, I also had this happen to me. I also called Sony and sent them the dead unit. Sure enough, within a week I had a brand new PS3. But here's the kicker....last night I went to update the OS, all went well. Then I went to re-download all my old demos, and games. I was going to take awhile so I left it on over night to download. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN!! Brand new system, not even 24 hours out of the box... I did read in these forums that someone else was saying that most people experiencing this had their systems lay flat, this is also the case with both of mine. I do believe it had something to do with heat. But the remark about it resetting itself after it fully cools down is totally BS. Both my systems are now dead. Geuss I gotta spin the roulette wheel one more time....

I have recently started having a problem with my ps3, and I was hoping some wise heads around these parts might be able to help me.

I have a philips 23pf5320 HDTV, which has one HD component and one DVI-HDCP input. For months (march to a couple of weeks ago), I was happily running my PS3 (European, 60Gig) through the DVI-input. This encompassed (I believe) firmwares 1.6 to ~1.7x (I didn't always update promptly).
Then on the day of the 1.9FW I downloaded it, installed it, played a bit of something left the room for a few moments, came back to find a blank screen. Confused I tried changing the channel etc to no avail. Not too worried I turned off my ps3. Trning it back on gave no picture. My TV didn't even seem to notice there was an input. I consulted the internet and did the press-the-power-button-for-5-seconds-until-you-hear-a-second-beep trick, but no luck there.

Grrr!

Then I plugged in my trusty composite cables, did that same sort of startup and Hoorah! my ps3 lives, albeit in 480i. Now, I go to display options and switch manually to HDMI, but still no luck. On the 'DVI' channel just a black screen. I try all possible combinations of plugging this in first, then turning that on, etc., but still nothing. Disgruntled, I unplug my 360 from the HD component input, put in the ps3 and I can switch to playing in HD this way fine.

I buy a new HDMI cable, in the vain hope that this will help. (It didn't.) I download FW2.00 when it comes. (Still nothing.)

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? A defective ps3? A defective TV? A FW-induced issue?

This has got me very upset , and I really don't want to return my ps3 because the 60Gig is getting scarce, but I really love the BC of the 60Gig. In fact, I NEED it.

Any solutions, other than constantly swapping my component cables at the back of my TV?

Any help is appreciated...I'd really like my ps3 fit and ready for R&C and Uncharted! :D

Before you do anything harsh, back up your data and reinitialize your PS3. Then see if that fixes the problem. If you don't have much data then the giving this a shot is well worth the while. If this doesn't fix it I'd call Sony. Have you also tried hooking something else up to the DVI input?

thanks for the reply...

Umm, the only thing I can think of with DVI-out I could try easily is our old computer downstairs; I'll give it a shot as soon as I can.

And sorry if this is ignorant, but how does one 'reinitialise' a ps3? I haver never heard this term before. I shall also have to backup the data, so I shall try to find an external HDD to borrow for the procedure.

My daughter is playing Folklore right now so I can't check the exact menu names but it is in the system menu. The backup menu is in there also, I think.

Anyone out there experience a single white horizontal line that moves very slowly up the screen? I just noticed this happening a couple of days ago. I switched the PS3 over to composite to test for this on a CRT tv and noticed that there was definitely a white line and black line that move slowly up the screen...is the graphics card going out?

Help!

I had a sammy 4696 going from DVi out Star choice - HDMI IN, it had a lot of handshake issues that way, sometimes was ok, sometimes no. maybe the upgrade screwed with hdmi going through dvi ?

single white lines going up the screen may be from a regular cable connection coax, that
is plugged into the back of your tv. ex: channel 3 , I also had this and when I unplugged that it went away.

the snow and scratching/ pop noise for asecond or so. is the handshake, So dont worry about that.

I think the last update was 2.0 around nov 9th ish,
for grouping videos, making playlists, PS netwok icon and info board snake, ect

everything seems to work nicely now, except when you group some videos, the thumbnails
are static, ie not moving image as before, (I miss that) boohooo

Hi i have my PS3 hooked up to my HDTV and everytime i start a game it flickers on the bottom half of the screen, i'm running it in 1080i i think, it only seems to be a light that's flickering not the actual picture on and off. Can anyone explain this?

..I've now tried it on Motorstorm, Call of Duty 4 and Ratchet & Clank and all have a flickering light at the bottom half of the screen. This is only since i chanced the setting's to 1080i.

If your tv can accept a 720p signal, give that a try. I don't think most games are 1080 natively so sometimes the conversion to 1080 causes problems.

When i put it into 720p the screen flickers towards the bottom constantly, i don't even have to enter a game. Once i have entered the game in 720p the flicker simply stays.

It actually just seems lik a large horizontal line towards the bottom, not so much the whole bottom half. Thanks.

Maybe i'm not explaining it right, it seems to be the backlight flickering as oppose to the whole screen flickering on and off. Also i've noticed it seems to fade after the game has been on a certain period of time. Is this gonna damage my TV because i only bought it yesterday?

I just bought a PS3 80GB. I downloaded the 2.01 update to a USB "thumb drive" and connected to the PS3. It doesn't recognize it when I try to update. What am I doing wrong. Does the file have to be decompressed by some program, it has an extension I am not familiar with. I thought the unit should recognize the thumb drive with the update on it. Please help. I only have access to the internet here at work and I don't have a way to connect a monitor to the PS3 if I brough it here to make a direct connection (and work would frown on that anyway).

You need to have the folder structure correct for the ps3 to see the update.
Make a folder called PS3 on the usb drive, then make a folder in that one called UPDATE and put the system update in there...
usb drive: PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP
Instructions for this stuff are at the playstation website.

The backlight is something the TV is controlling. It sounds like you might have a problem with you tv as someone earlier mentioned. One way to help this is to turn you tv off "dynamic backlighting" or whatever they call it on your tv. If you can manually set it to one setting, the flashing may go away.

Otherwise I would call your tv manufacturer's support line to see if they know of any existing issues with a ps3.

Good Luck!

No coax whatsoever goes into the TV.
leave regular coax cable channel 3 (Totally blank with snow)

only S Video, component, rca, Hdmi to be plugged into TV from cable or Satelite box.

you can use the coax on cable or Sat box to go into another Reg tv if you want.

in my case it was just interference from that cable, why I dnno

For some reason my PS3 is having problems with a newer BD. The Sopranos Season 6 part 2 will only play with 2 channel sound. The OSD for the PS3 shows that it is playing in multi-channel and I have selected English 5.1 in the BD menu, but the reciever is only getting the two channel audio. I have the PS3 connected to my reciever via optical cable (TV via HDMI). Older BD like Casino Royale play fine in 5.1. The PS3 also had trouble playing the Sopranos Season 6 part 2 BD at all.

I am assuming that the PS3 needs some firmware update (I am on 2.01) to deal with the newer BD, but is there something else I should be doing?

I emailed H/K about my issue since that is the receiver I am using, and they said to set my audio output to bitstream. I did this and I still get no sound. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem where there is just no sound at all from the game? Thing is, I get sound just fine from my TV when the HDMI is connected directly to it, but I would really prefer surround sound. I am starting to wonder if the game's audio if retarded or my PS3 is retarded. any help would definitely be helpful.

New PS3 80gb unit - while playing Motorstorm, a few times the audio and video both just went blank for about 3 seconds, then came back on. This also happened later while watching a DVD.

PS3 connected to a Sony SS2000 via HDMI, and from there to a Sharp LCD 1080p panel via HDMI. All equipment is on a power filtered battery backup unit. All connection are secure. Also, the PS3 is in a well ventialted space and does not power down during the blackouts.

My first thought would point to something going on with HDMI because both audio and video are affected. What may be causing this?

I purchased a PS3 for my daughter and need some assistance in connecting it. I have it connected for video via HDMI to the HDTV and optical out for the audio through the A/V system and bitstream selected and this works great for BD movies and playing PS3 games using the surround system. My pre/pro is old enough that it does not have any HDMI connections and my favorite brand will not be bringing out a new pre/pro for at least a year (sigh) -- thus my use of the Toslink connection for bitstreamed 5.1 surround

When HDMI is used as the input on my HDTV, it is not capable of bringing in audio from any other source to the TV.

What I wish to accomplish is to use the TV's HDMI input also for audio (two channel) as well as the Toslink connection which I also do with my Oppo DVD player and Toshiba HD-DVD player.

Is it possible to have Toslink for bitstreamed 5.1 surround to the A/V system AND (for the sake of my wife's sanity) ALSO 2 channel audio through the HDMI connection with the TV when that meager sound system is needed -- and IF so, then what settings in the PS3 are required?

If I understand your problem right, you're getting no image when you set your PS3 to 1080p? Strange, since your TV does indeed accept 1080p. What exactly are you doing that's causing this problem?

However, since your TV is native 768p, I'm not sure why you're worried about this. Either the PS3 or your TV will have to downscale the signal to 768p regardless. The fact that your TV accepts a 1080p signal probably won't do much for you as far as the PS3 is concerned.

Will the GH3 guitar(PS3) work with GH1+GH2 and the 80's game? There are a bunch of dead threads asking this very question. The very short (and very real) answer is no.

We're all waiting on Sony to release firmware that allows us to use different settings profiles, but no such luck. For now, you'd have to manually change the PS3 audio settings back and forth between optical and HDMI in order to do what you'd like. Sucks. And this in no way will simplify things for those in your household who value technological simplicity. Here's hoping a future firmware update will help us out...

I posted this in the wrong thread, so I'm reposting here...

I've been searching for weeks regarding the issue of media servers and the PS3 and still am striking out.

My setup is a bit unique and I'm thinking that one of my components has a setting that's wrong. I have DSL coming into the house and directly into my wireless router WRT54G (with update firmware). The router is set to WEP-128, key 1, UPnP disabled, and DHCP enabled. I have a WGA54G (Linksys Wireless Gaming Adapter) in the family room in order to get a better connection with my router (since the PS3's wireless range is somewhat limited). Also in the family room, I have a Dynex ethernet port replicator since my HD DVR has internet capabilities along with my PS3. So the PS3 is wired into the port replicator, which is wired into my gaming adapter, which wirelessly connects to my router, to my DSL to the internet.

Once I boot up the PS3 and chose my screen name, it logs me into the PSN...no problem (most of the time). And when my laptop or desktop runs the Windows Media Player 11, the PS3 will initially detect it, and will even load a picture. But after 2-10 seconds, I get the "disconnected from the media server" message and it will no longer recognize either the laptop's or the desktop's WMPv11.

So, the PS3 can connect to the PSN, I can download content, and play online...no problem. But I can't stream pics, videos, etc. from my computers to the PS3. I have media sharing enabled on WMP11. And once I get "disconnected from the media server", it logs me out of everything and I have no access to the PSN, internet, etc.

So, obviously, the first question is...why won't media sharing work? Second, are my settings correct on all components? Do I need to enable DHCP on the router AND gaming adapter? Or does the DHCP on the gaming adapter screw things up?

Here are my PS3 settings:

UPnP Disabled
Conn. Method Wired
Speed and Duplex Auto-detect
Address Settings Manual
IP 192.168.1.250
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default Router 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS 192.168.1.1
MTU Automatic
Proxy Server Do not use
UPnP Disabled
NAT Type Type 2
Media Server Connection Enabled

Anything look strange here?

Thanks.

P.S. It's interesting that my router's DHCP Clients Table has the laptop, desktop, and Gaming adapter with IP addresses. It does not show the PS3 with an IP...even when it's connected to the internet. I'm assuming that the replicator hub is just a "pass through" for the connection, but I'm not so sure about the gaming adapter. Can the gaming adapter and the PS3 have different IPs? It seems like they do now, but the PS3 isn't on the client's table. :(

Well, I believe the media server connectivity is designed to work with uPnP (which is flaky in most implementations I've seen on wired/wireless routers), so that might be part of the problem.

I would also recommend TVersity (vs wmp11) as a win32 server for your ps3, search on that topic in the blu-ray players forum for more details.

Hey Duga,

Try setting the port in the TVersity settings under general and then forwarding that port on your router. That could fix your disconnect problem when accessing TVersity using the PS3. For example, I have TVersity set to port 41952...

OK, tried the port forwarding...and still get the same error.

Now I'm thinking it might be a DNS issue. I logged into my router and copied down the primary and secondary DNS numbers into the PS3. I also copied the Subnet mask and Default router numbers. But now instead of failing on the second step (internet), I fail on the first step (IP address).

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DNS won't have an effect on why you are seeing your media server. If it has ever found your media server then it is probably working on the IP address and not on any domain name. Routing can be an issue, but there is something funky about the keepalive packets that is probably causing the problems. One other solution for you is to use a different router that has better uPnP support. That will probably be you best chance for a significant change.

Getting a new router is an option, albeit a drastic one. I have the Linksys WRT54G with updated firmware. It should be working correctly.

But if worse comes to worse, I'll have to buy myself an "early" X-mas gift. :)

heh, yeah well uPnP is fraught with problems and you won't notice till you try something that requires it like the ps3' media link capabilities. The other thing to try out which might cost the same is to get a powerline connection so you have wired ethernet and remove the wireless connection out of the picture and see how it functions.

Good luck!

Yup. My UPnP stands for Unilateral Piece of Needless Poop. It's about as usefull as a helicopter at a hot-air balloon fest.

I've also been researching that powerline option. I believe my Belkin line conditioner/surge protector has a "Home Powerline Enabled" plug. Excellent advise. Thanks.

So it is prob the game server PSN, or maybe my router blocking it?

Hello, I just got a PS3 and the lack of good documentation in the box is depressing. It seems like the system has all this potential and power but its tricky to actually unlock it!

I have a couple questions off the top of my head. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Does anyone have media server working with WMP11 + Actiontec M1424WR router from FiOS? I have had minor problems with that router on 360... just want to see if I need to do anything special to get the media server working.

2. Friends list... I can see the person's icon, what game they are playing, and... that's it. I know the network isn't as robust as the 360 but is that all there really is to it? The profile section lists ID, Online Name (can you set an online name different from the ID you set when you made the account), and language.

3. "in-game XMB"... is this a pipe dream or what? PS button just gives me Quit Game, Turn off System/Controllers, etc. Do games normally use your friends list at the least or are most games now still on the seperate friends list thing?

4. Motorstorm, Warhawk... do I really have to click through the EULA *every time* I play? They can't be serious can they?

5. I have it set to 1080p but I have read some games are superior in 720p. Does the system upscale to your selected resolution automatically or just display in native res no matter what it is set to (sort of like the 360)? I thought an advantage of consoles was avoiding fussy resolution nonsense. Are there per-game profiles at the least?

I think its an awesome system, but clearly some of this user-friendly stuff needs work.

 :( :(

It was working fine yesterday. Running 1.94. Do not have hooked-up to net/Media Stick/Flash Drive.

1. Turned off main power - did not work.
2. Did system reset like Sony guy said.
3. Tried reloading game/ inserted/re-inserted game.
4. Sony guy said to update 2.01 and it might work again.

A). Bought it at Costco.

My biggest/question concern is if it needs to be replaced can I still save my Saved games by transferring to external drive.

Please Help. Thanks.

"Is it not reading any games or blu-ray disc, try loading your PS2 games. If your ps2 games work, your blu-ray optical drive is busted. You can either call sony support and explain the problem; they would send you a new one or go to costco for an exchange."

I figured this was the problem. Thanks anyways.

I think its an awesome system, but clearly some of this user-friendly stuff needs work.

1. Get TVersity, WMP11 is fraught with issues and the uPnP on most cheap routers (actiontec qualifies in spades) could also be suspect. Try enabling uPnP and get TVersity and see how things go then. Other options include setting static IP's for both the ps3 and your media server, but I doubt that will help things.

2. Friend's list, what you see is what you get. Hopefully Home will provide a better interface in the future.

3. in-game XMB is a future feature request, no set timeframe or guarantee that it will appear.

4. Yes the EULA needs to be clicked every time, on-line gaming seems to be getting more lawyer based than gamer based.

5. Leave it at 1080p, games that are natively at 720p will output at 720p so you will get the original native resolution. You won't have to worry about this.

Hope that helps.

Ah I think I fingered it out... my bro sold his Japanese PS3 and my account info was on there. New guy probably logged in as me and deleted my buddies

What freaked me out was when I was playing Tekken it would randomly boot me off and say someone else logged in as me. The guy actually emailed me today asking for me pwd since I changed it yesterday. I pointed him to this:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/users/index.html

I think he needs to create a brand new user and make a new master PSN account. I don't see why a PS3 should be locked into one master account.

Hello all, this is the first time I've posted here but, i'm stumped on this issue. Have not been able to see any resolutions here on the particular issue that I'm having. I just bought a PS3 80g model. I have it connected to my HK AVR-247 via HDMI and from there I have it connected to my philips tv (HDMI) which I believe only supports up to 1080i, games I've tried all work fine as well as playing dvds. I got a blu-ray disc as an early christmas present (DBZ movie), when i put the blu-ray disc into the ps3 it does not detect it at all! not sure what could be going on. So i decided to contact the experts of the AVSforum.

so in summary BD disc not detected at all by PS3! Help!

Hey SlipJigs I also have experienced this but with the Bluray movie Donnie Brasco. Both the audio and video went blank for about 2 seconds numerous times so I returned the disc and got another copy and occured only once during the movie. It hasn't happened with Motorstorm but am also wondering what is causing this. I have the ps3 connected through HDMI to my Onkyo 605 which is then connected to my DLP (Samsung HLN4365W1) by an HDMI to DVI cable.

Well you have LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Digital 5.1 as audio options on the disc, so unless you have a HDMI connection, you won't get the high quality lossless audio of LPCM and TrueHD and only have the standard Dolby Digital.

DTS is not a requirement on all discs, so setting DTS on your receiver won't help.

Hope that makes sense.

You can have your wife reset the ps3 by holding the power button for 10+ seconds until multiple beeps which reset the ps3' settings. If that doesn't work, it sounds like your ps3 is failing, give a call to Sony support.

Hi, I have a PS3 hooked up to a Sony 1292 CRT projector and am having trouble with it synching to a 480i/p signal. The projector goes all disorientated and then shuts down with an error code of 08 which is for V-Stop according to the manual. It plays 1080p fine and looks awesome but when I try to play "extras" content on bluray discs which is at the lower resolution it plays up. I am running one of John Wyman's DVI input cards. Is optical limited to 640 kbps Or is my reciever too old? From the ps3 menu itself under audio options does DTS stand for newer format? Not just the older DTS that I thought my reciever could deal with. Is that why when I select it instead of dolbydigital surround- I loose surround sound?

PS3 failure rates are so low, I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty. Then again, it's usually the people that consider the warranty and then don't get it, that end up having problems (why that is, I have no idea)

I look at extended warranties as a high risk investment (like gambling). If you buy them for one thing, you need to buy them for everything in order to justify the risk-to-cost ratio.

However, the amount of money needed to buy an extended warranty for every piece of equipment I buy far exceeds the amount of money it would cost to repair or replace the the few pieces of equipment that fail.

In other words, don't buy them. They're a bad investment. Even if something breaks and it happens to be covered by that single extended warranty you bought, it doesn't make up for the amount of money it would cost you to buy an extended warranty for everything that might break.

It's like gambling. The house always wins. You may have been proven "right" once when you bought an extended warranty that paid off, but it won't make up for all the money you lose subsequently by continuing to purchase extended warranties that never pay off.

I posted this in the Hannspree thread as well but it isnt really being watched anymore so i'll post it here too and hope for the best :) I have a Hannspree Xv37.

This is really irritating the hell out of me.

I play my 360 at 1366x768 or whatever via vga, and it looks good at every resolution i choose. Looks great via Component as well.

Now that i have a PS3 i play via HDMI on port 1 (havent tried switching ports yet) and it looks very grainy in any res (on ps3 you pick 480/720/1080) ... the menus all look like a very very low resolution JPEG, and in 720p the edges of things are jagged and there are "Sparklies" as i've mentioned in the hannspree thread. In 1080i the sparklies go away but the picture doesnt look as sharp.

Some games don't support 1080i though, like Motorstorm which came with it... it will only either do 480p or 720p. If i try to force it into 1080i it kicks back to 480p if it isnt supported.

I called Hannspree Tech Support to see if i could get someone to perform the firmware upgrade talked about in the hannspree thread but the guy swore up and down that no such update existed and that it was ONLY plug and play.

He told me that it was my PS3, not the TV.

Ugh.

What should i do in this situation? It bugs the hell out of me...

I bought my HDMI cable through Monoprice.. its a 6' 1.3 cable.

I could also try Component but i'd have to fork over the cash just to troubleshoot it, and i would prefer it work via HDMI correctly anyway.

Advice? Suggestions?

Your TV could have problems with HDMI (can't rule that out) but it sounds like either the cable or the PS3 is bad (like the tech said). You could always run to a bestbuy, buy their expensive as hell HDMI cables, try them out and if the problem goes away, you'd know it was the monoprice cable.

Really, that's about all you can do at this point. If the new HDMI cable doesn't do anything, I'd take the PS3 to a friends house and see if you can't get it working properly there.

Which would accomplish the same thing as bringing his PS3 to someone else's house, but would require someone willing to cart their PS3 over to his house (instead of him doing the work carting his PS3 to their house). Either way, step 1 is definitely check with another cable before bothering a friend.

I think I need to clarify this since the replies are way off target from what I was talking about. Everytime you make a purchase, VISA, Mastercard, and AMEX (not sure about Discover) typically have an AUTOMATIC extended warranty on almost all of their credit cards. Most of them extend the manufactuer's warranty by one year which typically means it's from one year to two years, so my comment was to check with your CC company to see what benefits you can reap if your past your 30 day warranty.

It's a little harder to do than an in-store exchange, but for expensive CE items it's worth it. Read your Terms on your CC, there are benefits for consumers in there.

The factory reset is probably what you need to try next. Hold down the power button (with the back power switch in the on position) for 10+ seconds till you hear multiple beeps. Once the reset is done, when you power up, the ps3 should auto-detect the HDMI connection, if not, check your composite for video output.

Just a tiny addition to my earlier post

When i am describing "Sparkles" i dont know if i am wording it correctly...

I came home and tried all 3 HDMI ports and come up with the same result every time.

I did the trick where you hold down the PS3 power button for 5 seconds until it beeps a second time then calibrates to your TV resolution... that didn't help either.

When i did this though, i got ACTUAL sparkles all over the place as it was displaying 480p initially, every time a pixel would sparkle the sound popped... it was odd.

I think my problem would maybe be more ... "horrendous edge enhancement"

I don't get random sparkles like when it was in 480p mode, but rather the edges of items all have a constant white sparkle to it... and the edges are very jagged.

I'm hoping that a firmware update will fix this.

I have the 80gb PS3. I have had the player since 10/12 and I have no problems at all with set up, playback, downloading updates, etc. I have the system set up to output 1080p via the HDMI, which feeds into an Onkyo TX-SR905. My display device is a Panasonic PT-AE1000 1080 projector.

I have never had an issue with anything!! All signals have been sent out via the HDMI, as this the only output to my Onkyo. BD's played fine until last weekend!! I purchased the new Pirates of the Caribbean, popped it in to enjoy a evening with the kids in the home theater. The usual opening set up menus started and then the the froze up. I ejected the disc, reset the system and no disc playback at all. We still can sign into the network, we can still view saved video and play or download off of the net. The only problem is that the system will not play back any type of disc, nothing!! No PS3, no regular DVD, no BD. Nothing!!

I did the full reformat the next day, 5 hours and nothing. Called Sony tech support, which BTW is a joke. The only thing they could help me with is to let me know they would be sending me a box out and I would be required to send the PS3 back in. 3 weeks later I will or will not get a new unit. All of this is at Sony's discretion. If it has dust in it, it may void the warranty, really!! I was kind of upset with Sony at this policy, I have over $800.00 in a six week old system and this is supposedly their mantle piece and they are providing warranty service like this. Shame on Sony for this!! They should be willing or able to have this swapped out via a local distributor. If they are serious about this PS3 for the next 10 years as I have read, they need to offer a much better warranty program. I have a $800.00 set up sitting in the home theater room that is not being used, now we wait on Sony to get us a BOX so it can go all the way back to Texas.

Has anyone experienced this problem or had any warranty issues with a PS3?? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated, as I am kind of stuck at this point and time, I'm simply at Sony's mercy and they sure as hell don't seem to care about my problem!!:(:(

-if you can, hook up a different component up to your display via HDMI using the same cable you're using with the PS3. Cable box, DVD player, whatever you have that might have an HDMI out.

-take your PS3 and HDMI cable to a friend's house who has an HD display. Or invite one over who has their own PS3 (or other HDMI device).

I had my power supply die in my PS3, sent it back to Sony a few days ago, should be on it's way back to me today (expecting it back next week sometime) Not too happy seeing that it died in a shorter timeframe than my 360 did (19 days sooner actually) At least when my 360 died it allowed me to eject the disk unlike my PS3.

Is there anyway to "force" the ps3 to ONLY output a 1080i signal? I have an old Mitsubishi VS-50803 (1st Generation HDTV) that will only accept a 1080i signal thru its one DTV port.

you could probly go into display settings, and uncheck everythign except 1080i - it may not let you unselect 480i, but def. 480p and 720P

edit: nvm - you cannot unselect 480P, but you CAN deselect 720P, 1080i, and 1080P

I tried doing that and it won't let you uncheck either 480p/480i- always has one of those set as default depending on whether using HDMI/Component vs S-Video/Composite.

I tried doing that and it won't let you uncheck either 480p/480i- always has one of those set as default depending on whether using HDMI/Component vs S-Video/Composite.That's because not every source can output 1080i. So the PS3 needs to have a fall-back resolution.

Unlike the 360, the PS3 console will not simply scale any source material to a designated resolution. Like nearly everything else with this console, Sony's left this ability up to individual developers, publishers, and distributors.

How do I remove that damn Playstation Network ticker in the top right hand side of the screen?

Also, how do the themes work? I've installed one, when and why does the wall paper change? Is it possible just to use one particular wallpaper from a theme or does it always rotate?

I'm sorry if this has been metionned in the past. I have done quite a bit of looking around on the net and couldn't find a solution to my problem.

I bought a Playstation 3 last night. And since then I have been humbled by my lack of knowledge of new tech. I have never ever had so many technical problems in my life with a game system before. It's as if the PS3 is so ahead of it's time, that it's not even compatible with hardware made a year after it's release.

I'll avoid all the details because it this post will become a wall of text.

Here is my hardware:

TV: Sony KDL40XBR4
Amp: Yamaha RX-V661
PS3: 80 gig model

First installation was simple enough. HDMI cable going PS3 to TV and optical cable going from TV to amp. I already knew that the TV can only output sound from HDMI to optical as a Linear PCM signal. Whatever that meant, I didn't know at the time.

As you already have guessed it. Everything worked fine but I had 2 channel only sound. Hardly exciting for gaming. Best graphic in consoles coupled with Wii-like sounds capabilities. So I did my digging around and learned what Linear PCM is and how 5.1 channels can't go through optical. So out shopping I went for a second HDMI cable.

Second installation is still simple. HDMI from PS3 to amp and HDMI from amp to PS3. I had achieved what I wanted! Everything worked fine for maybe an hour. Then I started to loose connection. It would cut off for a second, then come back. Then do it again a couple of minutes latter and more often until I had no sound no picture.

Now this was hard to figure out the source of the problem. Everything is less than a month old and it was my first time using HDMI.

My first clue that this issue might have been caused by heat. So I took out the PS3 and out it on the floor with ton of air flow. Problem hapenned again.

I then did the same with my amp. Didn't solve the problem.

I did some more digging around. Found out that my amp's HDMI switcher doesn't support HDCP. But that can't be it... if it was, it wouldn't work at all.

I keep thinking it's related to heat because when I leave everything off for a long time, it will work fine for 20-30 minutes before the issue happens again.

Another interesting test I did is check what type of signal my TV was getting when there was no sound no picture. I was getting a 1080P signal and the amp was showing that it was receiving a PCM signal. This lead me to believe that the PS3 was at fault. Maybe I got a deffective unit... So I did the only logical test.

Third installation, HDMI from PS3 to TV. Everything worked fine. I left the PS3 on for two hours in a game and the issue didn't hapenned once.

I simply can't figure out what is going on and quite frankly, after almost 2 days of messing around with the hardware instead of the software side of my PS3, I am bored and highly dissapointed. Not that I wan't to go into system bashing. I now own every system and love them all. I just wish it would have been much simpler to get the PS3 to work normally.

Anyone ever had this kind of issue? Any sugestions for a solution? Any input would be apreciated.

I just turned off my tv and PS3 but the option is the same menu as the PSN or the web browser. Once you find the icon just hit the triangle button and turn it off.

Unless you modify the theme yourself then it will rotate the wallpapers of the theme every time you log off and on or turn the unit off and on.

My ps3 works perfectly in game modes and watching a non-bluray movie. but when i put in spiderman3 in bluray, it goes blank but i can still hear the audio.
Does anyone know if you have to change the settings for a bluray movie or what the deal is with this?

I'm sorry if this has been metionned in the past. I have done quite a bit of looking around on the net and couldn't find a solution to my problem.I'm trying to figure out exactly how you've got things set up and what exactly your issue is. Try explaining again, but more simply.

Second installation is still simple. HDMI from PS3 to amp and HDMI from amp to PS3.Something's seriously wrong with this setup. The PS3 doesn't have an "HDMI in" and doesn't need it for anything. You're trying to do something that your equipment can't (or shouldn't) do.

I did some more digging around. Found out that my amp's HDMI switcher doesn't support HDCP. But that can't be it... if it was, it wouldn't work at all.Right. But doing some of the connections you did may have fried something. Hopefully no permanent damage.

Third installation, HDMI from PS3 to TV. Everything worked fine. I left the PS3 on for two hours in a game and the issue didn't hapenned once.Judging by your post and your description of your setup, you're running things incorrectly through your receiver.

Here's how the connections should run:

PS3 -> HDMI -> AVR (so long as it passes video and audio via HDMI) -> HDMI -> TV

Be sure to double-check your sound and display settings in your PS3's XMB. You may also want to go ahead and do the autodetect reset (hold the power button on your PS3 until it beeps a second time).

Try that, and we'll go from there. Keep your description succinct and exacct so we know exactly where the problem is.

Oops, I made a mistake in there.

The setup which seems to be the one I should use is an HDMI cable from my PS3 to my receiver and another HDMI cable from my receiver to my TV (I messed up here and wrote PS3 instead of TV)

This is the one setup where I was getting the proper sound but would eventually loose image and sound over time.

Lol :D

Could be a handshaking issue, so be sure to reset your PS3's autodetect function (once you hook it back up through your receiver).

Also, check out the (very long) thread dedicated to your receiver:

I bought a Fighting Stick 3 for use with the PS3 for my child's Christmas present. As luck would have it :) my wife saw it and popped in her PACMAN disk from the PS2. She always complained the PS3 controllers and the "wimpy" joystick feel just ruined PACMAN for her and the FS3 is just what she's been waiting for.

Well the FS3 doesn't seem to really function well on the PS2 games. It doesn't seem to "communicate" all the desired changes of direction to the console. Does anyone know if this is symptomatic of the FS3, maybe a problem with V2.10 of the PS3 firmware (don't know why I let it update on Christmas day), or do I maybe have a faulty FS3? Is there a good test program/game?????

Thanks

Ok well i am still having 720p via HDMI issues with my TV, but i am working on getting a firmware update to work to fix that.

I now have a different issue though.

I am using the Pioneer HTS-GS1 home theater in a box setup for all my sound... everything has worked fine so far.

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-HTS-GS1-5-1-Channel-Surround-System/dp/B000H683YC

I have it connected to my tv RCA OUT jacks and set the receiver to "Analog" ... then i turn my tv volume down to zero (if i mute the tv it still works but has a big ugly mute bar across the bottom) ...

I have an optical out from my 360 to the optical in on the receiver and that works fine as well.

I just got my gf Pirates of the Carribean 2 and 3 for xmas and they are our first BD movies... but the sound wont work!

I can turn my television volume up and it works that way, but for some reason the receiver wont pick up ANY of the audio on the BD.

My fiance just got me a Gamepod 1.5 chair for xmas, and its really cool... it connects wirelessly and uses RCA into the little wireless receiver for the chair.

***Ok let me start this part over.

I've discovered that if i manually set my video and audio settings through the PS3 Display menu through either HDMI or Optical and manually check all the DD/DTS/PCM/2CH/5.1, the blu-ray will play the audio fine through the receiver.

But when i try to play it through the gamechair, it doesnt pick up the sound.

On the chair if i browse the menu, the "clicks" are picked up, if i play a game the audio is fine there, even if i play an SD DVD the audio comes through the game chair just fine.

Its the audio in the BR movie that wont work on the chair for some reason. It wont even pick up the frequencies to make it rumble.

You are supposed to be able to use a splitter to get sound both to the chair AND your surround system at the same time... which is pointless in my case because the chair still wont even rumble.

Anyone have any ideas?

***Just a thought, the game chair is only 2CH... a speaker in each side of the headrest, and then the amp below the seat... could it just be that the PS3 isnt converting the 5.1 to 2 channel for the chair to pick up? If so, how could i fix this? Or is it even possible?

Hmmm

So I searched this forum, and others, before I posted this, but I can’t seem to find the answer to my issue (well I found the answer but it didn’t seem to work). We got a PS3 for x-mas, set it up and watched a BR movie… looked great. Then we played a PS3 game, again looked great. I then played a PS2 game and it changed my settings (black bars on both sides of the screen when playing PS2 games). Put the PS3 game back in and it was back to normal. So I put in a normal DVD and it played with black bars on the side of the screen. I checked that upscale was set to “normal” and it was, but I still have the black bars. Just wondering if I’m missing another setting? Before the PS3 I had a Sony DVD upscale player and it worked fine, no black bars. Thanks

ThanksSounds like your PS2 games are doing exactly what they should be (unless you have PS1/2 upscaling set to "full"). AFAIK, there are no PS2 games that do true widescreen. The only way to get widescreen from a PS2 game is in the game itself; certain games have a "widescreen" setting in their game menus, but these only crop the top and bottom of a 4:3 image to create an artificial 16:9 image (like GoW2, for example). You can also set your PS1/2 upscaling to "full" and it should fill the screen by stretching the image to 16:9.

For your standard def DVDs, though, I'm less certain what's happening. Are you connected via HDMI the whole way to your display? Upscaling only works via HDMI (copyright issues), so if you're using component you should turn off upscaling. You could try turning off DVD upscaling anyway just to see what happens. Also, double-check to make sure you're not playing a pan-and-scan DVD!

Thanks for your reply. I guess the PS2 games doing that makes sense. I haven't owned a game system in a long time so the PS3 seemed like a good way to get a game system and blu-ray player. The PS3 is using the same HDMI cable and HDMI port on the TV that the Sony DVD upscale was using. I tried a couple differnt DVD's and they all do the same when upscale is set to "normal". I turn upscale to "off" and it goes to full screen. Problem is that my daughter is watching Grease on DVD and I don't think that will be a good gauge on picture quality. I'll try a different DVD later. Thanks

OK, I swapped out different movies and set upscale to "normal". Shrek 3 with upscale at normal put the black bars on the screen and Grease was doing the same. I put Nemo in with upscale set to normal and it played on the whole screen, sooo I guess it depends on the movie(DVD)? Thanks

So there are two aspects to consider, video and audio.

The video portion will be handled by utilizing a HDMI connection between the TV and the ps3. One recommendation would be to plug in the HDMI between the ps3 and tv first, then power on the the tv, and finally power on the ps3. This will allow the ps3 to auto-detect the video settings and hopefully you'll get 1080p right off the bat.

The second is for audio. I didn't know if you have a receiver (AVR) in between, but that can really change the movie experience if you have a full surround (5.1, 6.1, or 7.1) setup. There is an autodetect menu in the ps3 that can help you configure it, but if your only using the built-in tv speakers, make sure to go through the sound settings and only select the 2 channel audio options (and AAC) and that all the other 5.1 settings are off. Otherwise you could have a situation where you will not hear any dialogue on your tv but all the background music will sound fine.

Hope that helps!

Annoying Crackling sounds while playing ps3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone,

This website has been so helpful in my home theatre quest I figure I ask a question. Maybe some of you experts can help me with this issue I am having. I have a DENON DHT487DV receiver a PS3 and a Vizio 47" LCD. I have the ps3 hooked up by HDMI straight to the TV and an optical cable to the receiver from the PS3. I bought a regular splitter(one in two out w/no switch) for the optical cable because my recever only has 2 optical outs and one is going to the regular DVD player and the other was going to the HD cable box. So I have to turn off my cable box everytime I use the PS3 thru the receiver. When I play blue ray movies it sounds great. But when I play a video game thru the receiver it sounds terrible almost like a crackling sound. I know this is long and maybe confusing but if anyone has run into this problem I would love to hear about it.

Hmm, have you tried resetting your ps3 to factory settings? (you can hold the power button for 10+ seconds until you hear multiple beeps)

I was also going to recommend that you run the optical directly to your receiver and see if the problem still exists or not.

Good Luck!

Hi everyone.

I have searched but not found any help with an issue I am having with my new PS3. I have also searched on the PS3 site as well.

Hooked up the new 80gig PS3 and everything seemed fine. I have it hooked up to a front projector via HDMI and to the receiver via optical. Hooked up to my wireless router no problem. Downloaded the most recent patch and that is when I experienced a small issue. It loaded to 99%, hung there for about 4 minutes then gave an error message and indicated that it was going to re-install it. I did this twice and on the third time it was successful. The issue I am having now is to do with the blue-tooth devices. No matter what I tried, I could not get the controllers to work without being hooked to the PS3 via the USB cable. It was connected over night so I know it’s charged. Anyway, as soon as I unhooked the cable the controller would stop working completely. I know when it was connected it would default to the “1”position with the steady light. When I remove the cable, all 4 lights blink and continue to do so. When I push the PS button nothing happens.

Called Sony, went through a long process with them. Went back to factory defaults, did the thing where you turn it off with the switch on the back for 3 minutes then turn it back on with the power button held down on the front. Anyway, long story not so short it seemed to fix the issue. I could pair the Blu-Ray remote, and the controllers now worked without being connected. It lasts for about 2 minutes then they stop responding again. The Blu-Ray remote does not actually control the unit at all. It has fresh batteries as well.

Is this a software or hardware issue with the pairing part of the blue tooth? Has anyone else had an issue like this? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jay

Ok, I've got some stuff for you guys.

For starters, I bought a 25' cheapo HDMI cable, and a 6.5' not-so cheapo HDMI cable. The 25' arrived first, and it works great. Today, the 6.5' cable showed up, and it doesn't work at all. I am returning it as defective, but that scares me if it will be hit or miss when buying another cable.

Biggest thing. When I output video over the HDMI connection, I can not make the PS3 output the audio over RCA cables. I've set it in the options, and it stops sending it over the HDMI, but nothing over the multi-av. I can even change the video back to component/composite/s-video and the sound suddenly works without changing anything else.

I have read about people doing this, sending the audio to speakers, whatever. Why the F doesn't this work?

What I want to do is have my PS3 on one floor, connected to a 32" lcd, and also have it connected to the floor underneath to a projector.
I ordered the HDMI cable and an HDMI splitter. Then I realised that the projector is stupid, and can't even output audio, so the audio has to go seperately. So far, this idea has just managed to make me mad.
The HDMI splitter, oddly enough, worked. As long as both cables are connected to a source. Also odd, The cable I mentioned didn't work, actually would work when connected through the splitter. But if you turn the PS3 off and back on, then the HDCP messes up, and you have to reconnect.

Somebody tell I am not crazy.

Thanks.

No since any display that is 1080p will take a 1080i signal and adjusted it for 1080p.

Only one problem is that the PS3 doesn't output a 1080i signal. So early adopter with CRT projection TVs that can only display 480i/p and 1080i are screwed. IGN did some tests and it will default to 480p. Bad news for owners of these sets.

thats not true... i am running my ps3 in 1080i....

If you haven't already tried this, send video via component to your TV and audio to your receiver via HDMI. Adjust your PS3's display and sound settings to account for the difference and see if it works.

If that doesn't work, try running optical from your PS3 to your receiver for audio; you'll have fewer output capabilities, but optical should work for sure when paired with component video out to your TV.

However, after connected my PS3 up, and getting it configured to connect to the internet, I noticed the router loses cinnectivity to the internet, and I have to reboot the router and then PC. I find it hard to believe this is a coincidence, and think the PS3 has something to do with it. Anyone else experience this?

However, after connected my PS3 up, and getting it configured to connect to the internet, I noticed the router loses cinnectivity to the internet, and I have to reboot the router and then PC. I find it hard to believe this is a coincidence, and think the PS3 has something to do with it. Anyone else experience this?Try reading this first post of the wireless router thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=754875). Also, a big also, search is your friend. There are way to many wireless threads going around for one person grab them all but if you search for linksys (and model number) you should be very good to go.

Edit: I knew there was a recent thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=961171).

Apparently I recently learned that you can't do audio out via analog RCA with vidoe out HDMI at the same time. There is some internal shutoff. Ok well i am still having 720p via HDMI issues with my TV, but i am working on getting a firmware update to work to fix that.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think you should consider exchanging your TV for Tier 1 LCD......Sony, Sammy, Toshiba etc.....

yah, i was wondering if anyone can help me out here. i have just purchased a playstation 3 and i hooked it up to my lg 42lb5d (FULL TRUE 1080P...not upscaled crap) via HDMI and for some strange reason it will not display in 1080p but only in 1080i, when i try switching the display mode to 1080p the screen just goes black...anyone maybe know what the problem could be? My xbox 360 displays 1080p without a problem. Also i dont think its the HDMI cable because i bought one of those psyclones which i heard were pretty decent...help please

My turn for a question:

When i hook up my ps3 to my logitech z5500 control pod via an optical cable, on blu-ray playback, my sound is dolby digital multichannel, but not dolby digital 5.1. The reason I have issues with that is there is very limited playback through my surround speakers on that setting. But I know my pod & speakers can do dolby 5.1 well because through my directv (which is connected by digital optical connection) surround plays well.

No matter what settings I adjust on the PS3 (bitsream or PCM), I can't get it to read dolby digital 5.1 when I bring up the media info on playback. Why is that? I've heard some rumors its because I'm not using hdmi but surely optical can handle dolby d 5.1, can't it?

You should read/revive this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=946796).
I personally suspect firmware changes in the drivers for the BT devices but no one has been able to truely pin down software vs hardware.

Thanks for the reply DogDoctor.

Just as a follow up......Sony suggested exchanging the unit at the retailer I bought it from. He confirmed this is a known issue, but one of the most rare. (figures!) Picked up the new console yesterday, and it works flawlessly.

The Sony tech couldn't tell me if it was software or hardware, but I suspect it is an issue with the install of the new software upgrade......it had to try three times to do the upgrade on the first unit but had it done on the first try with the new unit.

Cheers,

Jay

I just got a ps3 and am having problems,

I have the Samsung LN-S4695D and connecting it via HDMI,
I get "searching for signal" screen pop ups during transitions between blu-ray movie/games. The screen will come up for 3-5 seconds and then it goes back to the source.

Mine does this on my Sammy 4071

But it NEVER comes back, it will lose handshake indefinitaly

And then after trying various things to try to get it to recognize again, it will come back, but it is VERY VERY ANNOYING

Anyone else have really bad Handshake issues?

I live in the country, no dsl (sucks bad!). But, i pay handsomely for satellite internet. Problem is, my new ps3 won't connect via linksys, it times out. Funny that my wii connects w/out any problems. I don't know what to do, any ideas?

On a side note, that mp3 earth visualizer is very cool.

I read an article on the Internet a couple of weeks ago that said a better picture was gotten from the PS3 if the Display Settings for RGB from Limited to Full and Super White from Off to On were selected. I tried this, this morning and was not impressed. I am using 1080p output with a Panasonic TH-50PZ700U.

Has anyone else tried these settings?

Tim

Hi all.

I am wanting to use the new PS3 as an internet browser for my wife to use w/ the new Samsung LN-T5271 LCD set I just got from CC last week..

This is a surprise for her as she would love to use the HDTV for viewing her church bible video studies..

I am just setting up the PS3 for Wired Internet. I was able to pull up my wife's church website at:

http://www.harvestreno.org/messages.asp

Under this website, there are many online bible studies that my wife normally does on the 15" LCD desktop.

I am able to go to the site and select any video in high or medium, the PS3 then asks if I want to load the plug-in. It looks like it is loading a Java Plug-in for this display.

I tried using this plug-in, I selected the 'x' (YES) option, but when the next window came up, the audio just worked (the window was a black screen w/ no video).

I retried the video and opted to not select the Plug-In. The same effect came out w/ no video, just audio..

When I tried this on a Desktop PC, the program called for AdobeFlash to display this video (not Java)..

QUESTIONS:

1) Is there anyway to get AdobeFlash onto the PS3 in some way or at least have the capability to select it as a plug-in?

2) Is there anyway aroung this??

3) Is Sony opting to have more Plug-Ins allowed in a future FW update?

Thanks much

just got the PS3 for a gift.. Is the optical output the only way to get sound to my receiver or is there a coaxial output on the PS3?

I found that the only output looked to be Digital Optical.. I was expecting the unit to have a Digital COAX also, but no..

Couple of possible solutions:

-run hdmi to your tv, then coax from your tv to your receiver

-get a digital coax to optical converter (not sure how well these work, though)

First time posting in this thread...

I have had my PS3 a little over a year now and have not really had any problems. the occasional freeze-up requiring me to reboot but thats it. I mainly use my PS3 as a Blu Ray player (bought one game, Resistance, when I purchased the system...and just recently bought GH3 for it.)

My connections have not changed throughout the year: HDMI from the PS3 to a Pioneer Elite AVR and HDMI from the AVR to a Sony XBR2 LCD. Very simple hookup.

Well, its been a week or so since I had watched a movie on the system and between that time was when I purchased Guitar Hero 3. When I played the game, I had to do a system update (from the game- I was not connected to the web) to get the game to play.
Well today my son wanted to watch IceAge so I popped the Blu Ray in...and am now getting a "unsupported signal; check device output" message on my Sony.

I tried 3 other Blu Rays and am getting the same message over and over- the video is playing, as you can hear the audio, but there is no video. Seemingly this is an issue with the TV rather than the PS3, but as I have mentioned previously, this exact setup worked without a hitch for the last 12 months until I did a firmware update on the PS3.

Anybody else come across this problem?

How do you remove the scrolling message bar from the ps3 main screen.

Thanks in advance

No. Guitar Hero 3 updated my PS3 as well, but it did not affect the ability to play Blu-Ray movies. I have since updated to 2.10 on my own, also without problems.
