number1laing 01-03-08, 11:10 PM My ps3 works perfectly in game modes and watching a non-bluray movie. but when i put in spiderman3 in bluray, it goes blank but i can still hear the audio.
Does anyone know if you have to change the settings for a bluray movie or what the deal is with this?
This seems to be happening to me now. I tested out 3 discs (blade runner disc 1 and 5, and bad santa) and it is doing it. This is the first time I have tested blu-ray since the 2.1 update! Any help?
Hi there Guys,
Is there a way I can get back to using the composit signal after setting up HDMI?? I had to change TV in a hurry but can not see anything on the screen. So are there some buttons I can press to get back to default settings??
Thanks
Suppy,
I get the same thing on my LN-T4066F set. I was told by people in the other threads here for the Samsung sets that this is considered normal because it is scaling the source to the television set.
Mine does this on my Sammy 4071
But it NEVER comes back, it will lose handshake indefinitaly
And then after trying various things to try to get it to recognize again, it will come back, but it is VERY VERY ANNOYING
Anyone else have really bad Handshake issues?

Hold down the power button (the soft button on the front not the hard switch on the back) for about 5 seconds.
tpaxadpom 01-04-08, 03:21 PM is there a tutorial on how to connect PS3 to PC over crossover LAN cable? I have done it successfully in the past, but now seemed to be having problems.
Thanks for that, I knew I could count on the forum :)
hkaydin 01-05-08, 06:01 PM Hello guys,
I have Panasonic 42PY70 (same with Pz70) Full HD plasma and it accepts 1080p input. However, when I connect 40 Gig PS3 to my TV I cannot assign 1080p output to display. it only gives 1080i. I updated Ps3 firmware to 2.10 but it does not help also.
Please help to resolve the issue.
Thanks,
wirechild73 01-05-08, 07:50 PM I just got Ratchet and Clank and started to play it and I get an error that tells me I don't sufficient space to install the 419mb needed to run the game. This is a fairly new 40gig system. It says under the system info that I have 28gig free.
A quick search says this is a known issue and I need to delete or add about 500mb to my HDD and it should work. I can't find any way to add or delete files from the HDD. I have looked everywhere in the menus and I can't find it. Can you please point me to how to do this?
I did try downloading a demo that was 1.2gig and installed it and that didn't seem to work.
Another question, if I format the HDD do I lose the actual Operating System or is it stored somewhere else? What in the world is using up nearly 10gig on the HDD?

This is a fairly new 40gig system. It says under the system info that I have 28gig free. Back when Insomniac first announced the bug and workaround, I think they said you have to install/delete right around 500Mb. From their wording, I never knew whether that meant ~500Mb or >500Mb.

How do you delete 500Mb? I can't find any way to access the stuff on the HDD.
confidenceman 01-06-08, 03:59 AM How do you delete 500Mb? I can't find any way to access the stuff on the HDD.It's not like a pc HDD where you have some file manager. It depends on what you're trying to delete. If you're deleting demos, just push the triangle button when you've selected the demo you want to delete. It gives you a list of options on the far right. One of those options is "delete."
If you want to delete any game data (stuff that some games save to the hdd), go to game data icon (in the game bar) and go to the particular file. If you want to delete save data, go to the save data icon (also in the game bar).
Exocet77 01-07-08, 02:18 AM I have had my PS3 for about 3 weeks now. 3 times it has froze up (audio still playing/continuing) and the remote goes dead wont respond. I have to shutdown the system and reboot. Is this NORMAL?
genfuyung 01-07-08, 03:12 AM For the love of god maybe I will get an answere here. I just got a PS3 last night and its been a nightmare ever since. I have the PS3 hooked up to my samsung 5265f via hdmi for video. Set to 1080p. For audio I have an optical cord run from my ps3 to my receiver. For some reason my screen flickers. The image doest dissapear it just gets skewed for a second. This happens ALL THE TIME. During dvds, blu rays, games and while in the main menu. How do I fix this? Id like to keep the PS3 but for 500 bucks Ill return it if this isnt a fixable issue.
Here is a vid showing my EXACT ISSUE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLiQQRd3ryU
genfuyung 01-07-08, 04:02 AM Could this be happening because I dont have a 1.3a cable?
splinters 01-07-08, 12:24 PM I would get a monoprice hdmi cable to test, if that doesn't work I would bring the ps3 back for swapping.

Thats looking like my only answer is to return the damn thing. Ive seen TONS of forum posts and videos showing this problem but no one ever posts a fix in any of them:mad:
stone93 01-07-08, 03:32 PM I'm sorry if this issue has been addressed in this thread or not. But does anyone have any issues with trying to stream too much music to their ps3?
I get a DLNA error everytime I try to bring up my library from my pc. This happens on wmp and tversity, however, it works fine with my laptop, which has substantially less music (40gb vs. 600gb on my pc).
basically, I know it is a size issue, but does anyone here know what the limit is?
FWIW, my 360 is able to pull it all up, really pisses me off haha.
LittleZZ 01-07-08, 06:51 PM I purchased my 40G PS3 about 3 weeks ago and am having a video problem.
If I leave the system on for a few hours, I'll start to get thin blue lines that run across the screen, similar to scan lines. However, unlike scan lines, they do not always go all the way across and sometimes curve. Generally if I turn the system off and then turn it back on, the lines will go away. They also seem to go away for the most part when I play a movie or game.
While it is only a minor inconvenience right now, I have heard about issues with the 40g PS3s with Foxconn boards and just want to get some opinions as to whether or not this is a PS3 issue or something else.
The system is connected to my Westing House LVM-42w2 via a HDMI->DVI cable (1080p is only supported on the DVI ports) and I have an optical audio cable going to my receiver.
Before getting the PS3 I used the same cable, connected to the same port, to hook up my HD DVR box and never had any video issues. Any thoughts?
KenB123 01-08-08, 09:20 AM I have been struggling with these issues also. With Media Player (MP), it has been hit and miss. Sometimes I get it to work (for awhile), but eventually I get the DLNS Protocol 4405 error. I have also seen a 505 error.
I installed TVersity last night. First attempt worked much better then MP. Was able to peruse folders and such with no DLNA errors. But I also noticed it did not bring in all of my MP3 subfolders. I loaded my PC D:\MP3 folder into the library, which has many subfolders for different artists and music content. It showed only about 12 first-level subfolders.
I am suspecting similar in that it is a limitation somewhere because of the sizes or numbers of folders being presented. I just don't know enough about PCs to have an answer as yet.
I do hope these Media Center issues can be resolved because I think this is one of the great 'additional' features of this gaming/BluRay device.
I have heard that the Nero-8 Home media enter is good. Can anybody confirm if that works flawlessly in this regard?

Nero 8 is a HUGE piece of bloatware. Save your money and buy a Maxtor Shared Storage II NAS with the Direct Media Streaming feature. Works great, 320Gb version ~$100. Other sizes available. No PC to worry about. You can use whatever you want to manage your music on the NAS and the PS3 doesn't care.
KenB123 01-08-08, 10:37 AM This does sound like an interesting option.
Does this direct connect to a port on your network router? Then becomes a shared storage device for any network connection? PS3 can view anything on it? Must be FAT32 formatted, correct?

I've got a Linksys NAS2000. It's basically a box you put on your network with room in it for 2 SATA drives and 2 USB ports on the back. The built in media server in it works well with my PCs and my PS3. I can even stream to both at the same time. Haven't played around with streaming video to it too much yet, but I'm transcoding as we speak so I'll be trying it tonight. The NAS2000 can be found for about $130 in local B&M stores. Probably cheaper if you look online. I just like not having to have a PC turned on to access my music. And the storage is pretty much infinitely expandable.

Must you leave this running 24x7, or can it be turned off during periods of expected inactivity.

jmystikcfl 01-08-08, 01:20 PM Well, I've never turned mine off. It's set up so the hard drives will spin down after a period of inactivity and the cooling fans turn off soon after. If you use a USB drive the fans never come on so it's silent. I think it wants the drives formatted FAT32, but don't quote me on that. I used the included format utility to prep the drive. I think it uses an onboard version of Twonky and works very, very well. If you're concerned about the power issue, it does have an off button, but would have to be manually turned back on.
KenB123 01-09-08, 09:53 AM I had a chance to work with TVersity again last night. I decide to delete all the folder I had previously loaded into the shared library and start fresh. I entered the top-level folder for my MP3 files (D:\MP3). I let it completely load without setting up any other directories to load (e.g., pics). After the load icon finished, then I proceeded to add the other folders. After this, it worked very well. The PS3 showed all the MP3 sub-folders (each for a different artist). Worked very well. Same success with the pictures folders. I guess the biggest suggestion for someone having any similar problems is to let the shared library load finish before moving on to a new folder. This only has to be done once when first adding a folder.
My next problem to investigate is why the internet videos such as the G4 website (that was an application default internet video site), don't display. I do get an error with those.

Is there any way to erase addresses in the PS3 memory that have been put into the address bar so they dont pop up when putting in other addresses? The history delete does address this.
Is there some trick to signing up for the PSN? It would accept NO names I gave it, even ones I was sure weren't taken, ie nonsensical ones.
confidenceman 01-11-08, 06:45 PM Is there some trick to signing up for the PSN? It would accept NO names I gave it, even ones I was sure weren't taken, ie nonsensical ones.Just means you're late to the party, and depends on how you define "nonsense." Keep trying.
I ran into a similar problem signing up for Xbox Live. Since I only recently got a 360, I had to really scrape the bottom of the barrel of my pretentious literary references to find one that wasn't taken.
It's not possible that asfdouasshh was taken as a gamer name. Is it possible that there is no "network down" message on the PSN? I was able to have almost every name I wanted on Xbox Live, and there are FAR more XBL users than PSN users, would you not agree?
Cyborg6971 01-12-08, 04:40 AM I have looked for the headset section and can't seem to find it so i'll ask here. I have a motorola hs 850 do I have to go into the assesory settings and connect it each time before I go into a game or can I just open the boom?
Scott_lb 01-15-08, 02:20 PM Last night I re-formatted my 60GB hard drive on my launch unit hoping to fix an issues with my controller and blu-ray remote not connecting to the unit. When doing so, I had the option of doing a "quick" reformat or a "full" reformat. I chose quick reformatting because the full was said to take over three hours. Is there any advantage to doing a full reformat of the hard drive? Things seemed to work ok after the quick reformat but I only had the system on for about five minutes or so (the controller and remote disconnect after about 15 minutes). Also, if I was to put in a new (and larger) hard drive, is it better to do a full reformat?
Thanks!!!!

Thanks!!!!No way to know if the full reformat is worth it until you try it.:)
It's also possible that you have a bad blue tooth antenna and need to repair/replace the unit. Either that or you're getting some kind of crazy interference.

I'll put it another way, if your going to have to send it in for antenna issues (know to happen), then you might as well try the reformat (it has known to fix a few issues too). What have you got to lose, other than stuff stored on the HD, so I would be sure to back that up first if you can.
soldsep 01-16-08, 06:39 PM Hey guys. I just got the samsung hl-t5076s DLP tv and the ps3. I can't setup the ps3 to use 1080p via hdmi. I bought the Monster 1000 series HDMI cables I know its a scam, but it should work. The tv does output 1080p and has 1080p HDMI inputs. I have installed the latest firmware for the ps3. I have tried the hdmi setup tips from sony. I have also tried doing the hold down the power button waiting for it to turn on then off then turning it back on to do the automoatic settings. The ps3 will only allow me to set it up to 1080i. I understand that not all games are 1080p. I'm not worried about that right now. I just want the ps3 to be setup with my tv with 1080p. Whats the deal any suggestions?
Hey gang, I'd like to set up a sub account for my son so he can play online with his own user name/gamer tag, whatever. What is the easiest way to do this, if possible? Thanks.

Try to set the video settings manually and check 1080p. It should automatically switch, otherwise it might be time to return the ps3 for a new one.

Whats the deal any suggestions?Could you maybe explain a bit more about what you're doing exactly? Asked otherwise, how do you know you're not getting a 1080p signal? Is your display telling you? Is the PS3's display settings resolution selection menu telling you? Have you properly configured your display to accept the PS3's video signal? Have you tried other HDMI inputs on your display? Are you connecting straight from your PS3 to your display, or do you have something mediating between them (like an AVR)?
Have you ever (or do you currently) have other equipment hooked up to your display via HDMI that is displaying 1080p properly?
I can't tell from your wording whether you've already gone into the xmb display settings and tried to tick the 1080p option. Presumably you have if you've spoken with Sony tech support already. :)
Anyhow, double-check the info/manual on your display and make sure there's nothing you're missing on that end (enabling some random option or whatnot).
Has anyone had problems getting the wireless connection to activate? When I was home over break, I noticed that the wireless connection on my brother's PS3 only activates on startup between 1/2 and 1/3 of the time. When it does not activate, the green wireless LED is not illuminated and it is impossible to scan for wireless signals. The only way to get the wireless working is to reboot the system until the green LED illuminates upon startup, which sometimes takes three or four attempts. When the wireless LED is illuminated upon startup, the connection is stable and there are no further problems. I know this is not a router or setup issue as I have used my PS3 at home without any wireless issues.
soldsep 01-18-08, 12:10 PM Could you maybe explain a bit more about what you're doing exactly?
Yes
Asked otherwise, how do you know you're not getting a 1080p signal? Is your display telling you? Is the PS3's display settings resolution selection menu telling you?
Well the 1080P selection in the ps3 settings never gets checked. When I try to set it manually it never lets me move on to the next screen to save it. When I do auto detect optimal settings it never completes. It goes back to the previous screen. I also know its not 1080P by hitting the info button on the remote which then tells me the resolution on the tv. Playing Call of Duty 4 I only get 720.
Have you properly configured your display to accept the PS3's video signal?
Nothing in the manual explains how to properly configure the display for the video signal. All it describes is how to plug in the device. If you have any idea on how to help me with this please help.
Have you tried other HDMI inputs on your display?
Yes tried the other HDMI inputs.
Are you connecting straight from your PS3 to your display, or do you have something mediating between them (like an AVR)?
Yes straight from ps3 to display no other trickery here.
Have you ever (or do you currently) have other equipment hooked up to your display via HDMI that is displaying 1080p properly?
No I have no other equipment.
I can't tell from your wording whether you've already gone into the xmb display settings and tried to tick the 1080p option. Presumably you have if you've spoken with Sony tech support already.
not sure what the xmb is? But yes I did talk to sony, and in the end they asked me to format the ps3. I did that last night and still no fix.
Anyhow, double-check the info/manual on your display and make sure there's nothing you're missing on that end (enabling some random option or whatnot).
I've tried a combination of things like enabling game mode and what not. But no fix. I've checked and double checked, but no matter how many times I check I still feel like I'm missing something. The manual is not very technical. And it doesn't even gives me the specs for the tv. I had to find the specs else where.
OH BTW, Sony said they would replace it if the formatting doesn't fix it. So I will be calling them today.
confidenceman 01-18-08, 01:59 PM Well the 1080P selection in the ps3 settings never gets checked. When I try to set it manually it never lets me move on to the next screen to save it. When I do auto detect optimal settings it never completes. It goes back to the previous screen. I also know its not 1080P by hitting the info button on the remote which then tells me the resolution on the tv.Sounds strange, and by "strange" I mean "broken. So you can check the 1080p resolution manually, but you can't go to the next screen (by pressing right on your control stick) to save it? And with auto detect it goes back to the previous screen; that would be the one that asks whether you want to auto-detect or manual select? How broken.
Just a quick question, though, what material are you playing that's not getting 1080p? If it's CoD4, that's because it will only display at a higher resolution if you force it to. Otherwise, it'll always output at 720p. Have you tried a 1080p BR-D yet using the auto-detect?
OH BTW, Sony said they would replace it if the formatting doesn't fix it. So I will be calling them today.Sounds like you've got your answer. After calling in and sending my busted controller on Tuesday, I got my new one from Sony this morning!! Awesome customer service; crazy fast turn-around time.
soldsep 01-18-08, 05:29 PM Well I wasn't expecting any game or blue ray to work in 1080p if the sony wont allow me to save the settings at 1080p.
And, yes when i try to do customize display settings and manually select 1080p. It wont let me go right to save the settings. But I can do it at 1080i. Whats 1080p BR-D? Auto detect on the ps3 isn't working. It goes back to the previous screen, asking if I want it to auto-detect the optimal settings or custom.

That sounds like a problem with the OS. Very odd.
If you set it to an unsupported resolution, it should just go black, then revert to your prior setting (1080i). Sounds like the hardware is doing what it should (since you're getting a video signal), but the OS won't let you alter the settings at all.

soldsep 01-18-08, 11:22 PM alright thanks though. looks like it will be replaced. I'll post if that fixes the problem.

I had mine home for about 8 days and it worked great. Then, on the 9th day my wireless stopped working. Of course laptop was getting wireless fine and I tried resetting my router, rebooting the PS3, among other things for about 3 hours. Then, I tried to hook it up hardwired and no luck there either. I finally called Sony and I sent my PS3 in on Wednesday...I miss it already.
All that to say, don't waste your time trying figure it out. Just call and let them go through their script of questions and the obvious solutions that most people would try before ever thinking about calling. Then send it in and get a new one. Good luck.
I have a wireless network and have my PS3 hardwired to the AP. I have enabled Remote Play and Remote Start for use with my PSP. When the PS3 is off and when Remote Play is selected from the XMB, the PS3's wifi becomes active. This makes sense to me for Remote Play but I would prefer to connect through my home wifi setup without adding another possible source of interference. What I find odd is that the PS3 also activates it's wifi when I'm watching a DVD or BD. Anybody else seen this? Is there a setting I'm missing to turn it off? Thanks.

Until a few days ago, my PS3 was only wireless. I moved the PS3 downstairs and wired my PS3 into my network. I ran the cable, linked fine, but DHCP would time out when I tested my connection. I rebooted my wireless router and powered the PS3 off then on. I then tried using different settings: 100 Full, Auto, UPnP off, 3 diff ports on switch..., same problem. It finally got it's IP address from the DHCP server, _IF_ I just waited after powering the PS3 on. Never when I was testing connection. So I tested downloading from the PS Network and it is *VERY* slow, it works but slow. At least twice as slow when using wireless and 5 or 6 times slower than my desktop, which is wired through the same switch and router/firewall. I figured it was the cable, so I tried a different cable, same issue. I even plugged the cable directly into my router/firewall (eliminating my switch), still DHCP would time out. I was never really successful in getting DHCP to work correctly.
I setup the PS3 to be static in my DHCP server. I even saw that the DHCP server would list the PS3 as a static IP client, even though the DHCP timed out on the PS3. I tried using OpenDNS DNS server's IP, rebooted my cable modem (as this was suggested by some) and it works, as it did before, but again, it's SLOOOWWW and occassionally I still get the DNS error message. I gave up on the DHCP and manually entered my IP settings on the PS3. Manually entering the IP information works, but is still noticably slower. I also get DNS server errors, DLNA server errors and I can't connect to my DLNA server.
Wireless
PS3 -> Wireless router (acting as an access point) -> switch -> Firewall (DHCP server) -> cable modem
Wired
Ps3-> switch -> Firewall (DHCP server) -> cable modem
I have the 60GB. I did notice that the MAC address is the same for the both the Wired _AND_ Wireless NIC ( ). I do have a PSP and it's been linked to my PS3, remote play on: I mention this becuase it seems that when I power off my PS3, the wireless light (in the front of the PS3) comes on, even though I'm wired into the network. Also, it does seem that my PS3 acts as a wirelss access point to/for my PSP. If I move back to using wireless, the settings (SSID, WEP ...) are still remembered on the PS3; I don't have to put them in again. Is it possible that using the wireless NIC, connecting a PSP to my PS3, _then_ switching to wired has left some *ghost* affect (effect?) in my PS3's TCP/IP stack, where it gets confused which adapter it should be talking over? Could I just try and "unregister" my PSP, then move to wired?
Can/should I reset my PS3 to factory defaults and start fresh? I would prefer to use my wired connection, but if wireless is my only recourse, then so be it. Am I wrong for thinking that being wired would result in a quicker connection. My neighbors PS3 downloads just fine (using comcast also), about as fast as my desktop. His has been wired since day one.
I hope this makes sense, I'm trying to be as succinct as possible, but it's hard to tell if I've described it well enough. Thanks in Adavance!

If your projector's native resolution is 1080p, then it has to upscale the signal it gets. I wouldn't worry too much about the PS3 doing it.

I hooked up the PS3 and I can get audio and video for the Blu-Ray but no video for games. Here is the equipment I am working with:
TV: Panasonic PT-53WX42
Receiver: Yamaha HTR 5750
Neither the TV or the Rec. have HDMI inputs so I am trying to run a component set-up. I have tried connecting through the receiver and to the TV directly and no luck. I can get the Blu-Ray to play but the games just flicker a couple times and then the screen goes black. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

It's been a couple of days, so you've probably figured it out on your own already. But just in case, go to the "sign in" icon located between "playstation network" and "playstation store" on the XMB. As soon as you enter, you will be given a choice of signing in or changing your password.

Honest, not trying to be a butt, but USE THE SEARCH TOOL! Yes, there are reviews of IR adapters but we're not going to do the search for you.
I recently bought a PS3 and have it hooked up via HDMI to my Onkyo 605 receiver. I’ve searched for this issue but everything I found was either about the speakers popping or whether to use PCM or Bitstream.
The issue I’m having is when I go to play a game or blu-ray movie my receiver switches what I assume is audio formats but it also seems to drop the video for a second. Depending on the game or movie it could happen once or serveral times until I get to the main menu. Once I get to the game menu or movie menu its fine. Here is an example of what happens.
1) I have the PS3 on
2) I insert a blu-ray movie
3) The receiver makes a clicking sound (as if it switching audio formats) the PCM disappears from the receiver display and the HDMI flashes several times. The picture also drops out and my projector displays its default display as if I only have the Projector on and nothing hooked up to it. This last about two seconds and then the picture comes back and the receiver displays PCM and HDMI again.
4) It will show the movie logo such as fox then the issue above happens again. This could happen several times depending on the movie.
5) Once I get to the main menu its fine and does not happen while playing or watching the movie.
I have my 360 hooked up to the receiver as well as my HD DVD player and Comcast receiver and I don’t have this issue with any other component except the PS3. It’s pretty annoying as I put in Pirates of the Caribbean and I could hear the receiver making switching noises and the picture went out 4 times before I got to the main menu. I have the PS3 set to PCM for the audio.
What can I do to keep this from happening?
To me it sounds like the receiver is switching between the audio sources but why does the video drop as well (apparently between tracks prior to the reaching the main menu on the disc)?
Here is how I have things hooked to my Receiver
360 = Component with Optical
PS3 = HDMI
HD DVD player = HDMI
Comcast Reviever = HDMI (when used)
My Projector is hooked up via HDMI from the receiver.

I'm not hooked up through my receiver via HDMI, I have HDMI directly to my 62" Mitsubishi display. I too see the video blink in and out a lot when starting up a game. Almost as if starting a game puts the PS3 into default 480 mode before then realizing it should go back to 720p output. ???
Agree it's annoying. Hope there's some fix.

Assuming the ps3 is using HDMI for audio as well as video, it sounds like there is a HDCP handshake error that's causing the audio and video to drop. I'm not sure if this a negotiation problem or what, but I don't have a recommendation on a fix either unfortunately.
You could try another HDMI cable or if you have long runs of HDMI cable, try to shorten them to see if that may help. (if it does, then you need a higher gauge HDMI cable to for shielding)

Second, if you had searched for "IR adapter" (a term you yourself even used in your post), you would have easily found this very relevant thread:

Third, as for using an after market fan, I'd avoid these unless you know what you're doing. Most available after market fans sold for consoles (including the PS3) often only increase heat, increase power consumption, and force air back into the console. To reiterate what dgburns helpfully suggested, they're generally a bad idea. Just make sure your console (and other equipment) has room to breathe and healthy airflow.

I will take your recommendation and do some temp measurements. If heat in the enclosure is an issue I will put in a case fan.

mensign01 01-29-08, 03:27 PM When I'm in the system menu the screen flickers a lot and sometimes blacks out completely for a few seconds. It always seems to come back but it's annoying and I'm not sure if something is broke. Could this be a problem with the PS3 itself? The HDMI cable? The tv?
The thing is that when the game or movie is being used there are no problems at all. It's only in the system menu that I'll see this flickering. That's what makes me think there is something wrong with the PS3 and not anything else but who knows.
My tv is a Mitsubishi WD-65733.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Scott_lb 01-29-08, 04:41 PM The optical/toslink cable used for the PS2 should work fine with the PS3. Also, you can place it behind you and still use the controller - Bluetooth technology does not require that the system be placed in front of you like an IR controller. I think you need to be within a 30 foot range, though. If not, that means that your room is really, really big and I need to come over to game :)

My 360 upscales all the games to 1080p so I was just curious as to wht the ps3 didnt do that.....There's quite a bit of info on this topic elsewhere, but quickly: the PS3 will output source material at its ideal, natively rendered resolution. If the console knows your display isn't compatible with that resolution, it will put it out at a resolution that is compatible with your display.
For example, if you have a 1080p display, BR-Ds will be output at 1080p. If you play CoD4, it'll output to 720p (even though it can be scaled up to 1080p).
You can, however, force the PS3 to output games at higher than native resolutions, but if the individual game doesn't have the capacity to do so, it'll revert down to 480p. Regardless, since your display is native at 1080p, something will have to scale the material (your display, an AVR, the PS3). As it's configured now, your display is doing the scaling.
Unlike the 360, the PS3 can't scale everything you want it to. It only has partial scaling abilities, so developers have to include scaling capabilities in individual games.
If you're unhappy with your display's ability to scale 720p to 1080p, then try forcing the PS3 to do so (by unchecking the other resolutions in the display settings menu). Compare the two, and see which you prefer. But remember that not all games are able to be scaled internally by the PS3; if you force 1080p in those cases, the games will be output at 480p.
DuncanR2N 01-30-08, 06:25 PM Anyone have any issues with audio dropping on their PS3? It will eventually pop back in but for the first couple of seconds the sound is gone. Additionally every once in a while the sound will get out of sync. This only happens using the digital audio connection. The receiver is hooked up to the 360 and PS2 as well and neither of these have sound issues.

Any ideas?Probably has to do with the fact that you have different audio formats coming out of the PS3 than out of either the 360 or PS2, thus your receiver has to process those differently.
My initial guess (without knowing the specifics of your connections and receiver) is that your receiver is switching between processing modes as you switch between material on your PS3. If your receiver's processing effects aren't configured properly, it'll have to keep switching modes depending on the formats it's receiving. Hence the pauses and occasional lag.
Read up on your receiver's processing modes and how to configure them for different source material.

Sounds similar to my issue. I'm using HDMI but my system drops the video and audio (well I say audio but the parts that are dropped usually don't have audio) prior to reaching the menu for games and movies. Doesn't really bother me when playing games but it's a big factor when watching movies. I have now idea how to fix it. I've tried changing settings and even tried new cables. I have several other devices hooked up and no issues with them.
Rbuchina 01-31-08, 08:57 AM My PS3 is just over a week old. About 8-10 years ago I used a Hi-8 camcorder and Studio 400 for editing several videos. The files created are AVI. I put about 500MB of files on a CD and tried to get the PS3 to play them. I get a "Unrecognized Format" error next to each file. I tried to copy the files to the hard drive and get the same result. The files will play on Windows Media Player without any problem. When I select file info on the PS3 it shows it as an AVI type file.
Any ideas?

AVI is a "container", all sorts of different video and audio codec data can be stored in a AVI container. Apparently the software you used back then didn't store the video in a codec recognized by the PS3. You might have to import every one into a PC and "convert" them to a supported video and audio codec.

Thanks for the feedback.
When I read the manual about types of video supported by the PS3 AVI was included and I thought this would be a no brainer. I hate codecs. Probably because I do not understand them. I may have the ability for the editing software to modify them.
Everything else is great so far.

Lots of people like PS3 Video9 (http://www.redkawa.com/). It's not been updated for the divx change, but it's good at converting your avi's in batches to mp4's that your PS3 can play.

If not, which mode do you have it set to when you're playing your PS3?
Also, you could try switching to bitstream audio since you're using an optical audio connection and see if that helps.
The easy check, of course, is to hook your PS3 directly to your display and send audio to your display in addition to video, but it sounds to me like something on the receiver end.

Thanks for the very informative answer, I appreciate it. I think I'll just leave well enoughj alone and deal with the 720, its not really a problem I was just curious.
DangerousK 02-01-08, 09:11 PM Has anyone had a problem with their PS3 remote no longer functioning with the system?
My remote was working fine today, now all of a sudden it is not responding at all. I changed the batteries, and that did absolutely nothing.
Any ideas?
I have searched the interent for a solution to my problem. The issue that I am encountering is that there is video but absolutely no audio when i play any games. However, there's video and audio when i'm in the main XMB menu. This was not a problem before as i have played the same games before and it had audio. But now, all of a sudden all of in-game audio is lost.
I connect my ps3 to my tv directly through an HDMI cable. I have a 46" Sony Bravia KDL46V3000.
When i tried using the AV cable provided, there's sound and audio. But it is very frustrating as the video is only at a standard resolution.
Is there something wrong with my ps3 or is it simly something wrong my HDMI cable?
danforth 02-02-08, 12:17 AM I've searched this forum, but have found no similar problems. So I apologize if this has been covered.
I recently purchased a PS3. The first thing that I did was install YDL 5.02 on it to avoid having to transfer saved data elsewhere while formatting. The installation seemed to be a success. However, I am unable to open any sites in the Firefox browser.
I'm connected via ethernet, so it doesn't have anything to do with wireless issues. I set it to DHCP, and it successfully recognized the IP, DNS, and secondary DNS addresses. The browser on the PS3 OS works fine.
I've tried many times to open other sites (mainly Google or a Google search). After numerous failed attempts (over the course of 3-4 hours), it suddenly worked. I restarted the console to confirm that it was finally working, and it had stopped working again. I checked all of the settings, which were exactly as they were whenever it was working. Nothing..
As of now, I'm downloading 5.01 in hopes of better results. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Any suggestions before I install a different version?
Thanks in advance for any info!

This might be an issue with your audio settings on your ps3. If you are using your tv speakers and have all the audio settings checked (5.1, 7.1, etc), you may have audio problems since your tv can't decode 5.1 and 7.1 content. Go through the audio menu and see if that helps.
If you're using an AVR, I'm have no idea...

Pilot12 02-06-08, 11:55 AM This is my last shot at fixing this before the Sony return box gets here.
My brand new PS3 80Gb occasionally freezes up, not every time I use it, but usually. Never in the same spot on a disc and if take the disc out and start over it might be better or worse;
With a BD, the system usualy completely crashes showing a green screen requiring a complete reboot.
With a DVD it's usually just a simple video freeze while the audio keeps going, requiring either a disc removal or sometimes just backing out of the movie and going back in.
With a CD or SACd, the screen saver will freeze, the PS3 quits responding to the controller and the audio keeps going, sometimes repeating the same track over and over.
So far Motor Storm (my only game) hasn't froze, but I haven't played it for more than a few minutes at a time.
When the video freezes, usually the controller quits working too, that's why I have to eject the disc or reboot. Sometimes the controller still works and I can just back out to the main PS3 menu and start over from there.
I'm running HDMI out to my AVR and HDMI from there to the TV. I haven't tried the other cables because if the problem lies there, I'm sending it back anyway.
I've done everything I can find in the manual, online, and that Sony support suggested. No help. Any new ideas before I send it in? Thanks!
metal83 02-06-08, 12:00 PM just got my ps3 yesterday, posted this in a couple diff places, but my menu just froze on me today, is this a normal once in a while thing, or should i be worried since this is only the second time i have turned this on?
splinters 02-06-08, 06:25 PM I would recommend to both of you (pilot12 and metal83) to return your ps3' before the warranty is up and get a new one. Freezing every so often (once a month with heavy use) is acceptable, otherwise you have to wonder if it just wasn't built right.
If you haven't already update to version 2.1 of the firmware as well.

confidenceman 02-06-08, 07:33 PM with the addition of the news feeder to the xmb with firmware 2.0, some people were reporting freezes in the xmb. supposedly 2.1 fixed that. if it's still freezing after you've updated to the latest firmware, do as splints says.
freezes may be "acceptable" but they aren't "normal," even occasional (once a month) ones. I've owned my PS3 for over six months, use it heavily, and the only freezes I've had were software related (Warhawk, for example).
If you're getting unaccountable freezes after the latest firmware update and you're still under Sony's 1-year warranty send it in.

You know, if it wasn't for all the glowing reviews on this forum I never would have bought the PS3; I've had 2 Sony DVD players over the years and they both sucked. Sure hope I get a good "refurbished" unit for my mone I gave for a brand new on. Ok, 'nuff venting, onward. Thanks again.:)

My initial guess is that you're getting a 480p signal somehow, though. Check the display settings in the XMB and make sure you've got all the appropriate resolutions selected for your display.

Only thing I have seen that does that on my system which is HDMI>DVI, so might not be the same thing is to go into the Blu Ray settings (BD settings or something in the settings menu I believe, not in front of the system now) and if it is set to component (y-Pb etc....) change that to RGB. I got weird colors with the y-Pb setting but fine with RGB.
Ravenous112 02-10-08, 01:10 PM I have my PS3 hooked up to my Olevia 337h through RGB full HDMI, no problems. I do, however, have a problem with the Philips HTS3555/37 HTiB. I'm using an optical to coax converter to connect to my HTiB and for the most part it sounds great, but I can't hear the key tone ticks when using the menu, and it seems if you play for too long it will randomly have audio drop outs like the reciever is losing the signal. I'm having Philips send me a replacement to see if it helps. If not I'm just going to sell it and get myself an Onkyo.
sambow87 02-10-08, 04:51 PM Just got a PS3 and have some issues, mainly with CoD4. Everytime I go to a new menu or a new option in the menu, it slightly...freezes? It doesn't really freeze but I can't do anything on the screen. The video stops responding but the audio is playing and then a couple seconds later it's fine.
Bad install of the game or what?
sambow87 02-10-08, 05:37 PM Ok, so it seems to "skip" a little in game. I'm going to try just hooking it straight into my projector and see what that does and do some stuff on the router.
EDIT - A little more to the error. It only starts to skip when I go to online. As soon as I hit multiplayer....freeze....play match....freeze.....downloading game settings...... and does that forever.

I had the same issue online. Stuck on "downloading game settings" and when I did manage to get online to play, I got connection freezeups and booted out of many game sessions even though I could see my connection was uninterrupted. Turned out it was the well discussed NAT3/NAT2 setup issue with my router. Once I was able to get a NAT2 connection, by changing my router and PS3 network settings, COD4 ran flawless. I even set my XBOX 360 to the same custom router IP address and that works much better also. Go to Youtube and search "PS3 NAT2" and you can find some good video tutorials on the fix.
Oh, and I'm using a wireless connection. Go to PS3 network settings and do a connection test, if your connection type is "NAT3", that is your problem. You need NAT2.

What is your online connection? Wired? Wi-Fi? If Wi-Fi, what's the signal strength your getting? AT the end of the day, I would recommend a wired solution over a wireless one to make sure that wireless at the very least isn't exacerbating the solution.

Scott_lb 02-11-08, 02:23 PM Does anyone know if there is a documented problem with launch 60GB units freezing while playing DVD's or Blu-Ray movies? I haven't had any problems until the last month or so (and my machine only gets moderate use - two movies per week and very limited gaming). The video will "freeze" during a scene (most recently in Black Hawk Down) but the audio will continue to play as normal. Thoughts?

Are you still under the 1-year manufacturing warranty? If so, it's probably time to give Sony a call. If not, and depending on how frequent and serious the problem is, you may need to shell out for Sony's repair cost.:(
Scott_lb 02-11-08, 07:25 PM Nope, I'm not under the Sony warranty (about two months out). After contacting Sony, they told me to re-register my controller (because they will fix the problem :)
I think I'm simply going to cut my losses and throw my 60GB on eBay and grab a white one when they come out. The only function which I will miss is SACD playback, but I can pick up a Denon SACD/DVD-A player on eBay for that.

Thanks guys for the help. I did the connection test and it is NAT2. I am doing this over wireless though. I don't have any lag or any of these problems in warhawk, in game or trying to get to a game. CoD4 tonight has been alright. No "Downloading Connections" or whatever, but it seems like i'm sort of lagging in the game. I mean, it does not give me the usual "connection lost" symbol while playing but it sort of "pauses/skips" every once in a while, and more so when there is a bunch of action going on the screen. Once again, there is no lag in warhawk at any time.
I'm going to try wiring my connection this friday to see if it helps. Any other suggestions to try in the mean time?
AV Design 02-12-08, 12:18 AM jkyte,
I have held off from purchasing the PS3 with expectations that sony will figure out the proper fix for all defects people are seeing.
My brother has purchased his PS3 a little less than three months ago (early-Dec BB's so called "deal") and two weeks ago his has the same symptoms. He cannot play any disc and has been sent the same box to return and wait for a replacement.
What Happened:
While booting up and then loading first few segments of the game (Guitar hero 3 menu) it was very slugish. Then after 45 seconds of play the notes on the guitar frets at the bottom of the screen disappears. seconds after game video freezes and then repeats the same 15 to 20 second segment of audio/video until unit was turned off. Then after a reboot, no disc would be played.
Issues:
-This has become a common problem among now four out of 7 people I know with a PS3.
Sony needs to recognize this problem and fix for any new release of models.
-Isolate issue to either Software or Hardware or BOTH! and provide proper fix.
-No Customer Service and fully-functional replacements instead of some re-worked. (re-certified warranty which is most likely void before you even receive it)
Seems like Sony has encountered either Memory corruption of either SD-Ram or some sort of Flash Memory which cannot be over written properly or they have broadcaster an update which does not function as planned.
This is peanuts compared to the issues they will have when they try to use a "firmware-upgarde" to update Blue_ray profile 2. There is only so much you can do when your programmable FPGA (or Micro Chip) has overall limitations. I would stay away from any Blue-Ray updates for this platform since it already proves unstable.
I have the 80gb PS3. I have had the player since 10/12 and I have no problems at all with set up, playback, downloading updates, etc. I have the system set up to output 1080p via the HDMI, which feeds into an Onkyo TX-SR905. My display device is a Panasonic PT-AE1000 1080 projector.
I have never had an issue with anything!! All signals have been sent out via the HDMI, as this the only output to my Onkyo. BD's played fine until last weekend!! I purchased the new Pirates of the Caribbean, popped it in to enjoy a evening with the kids in the home theater. The usual opening set up menus started and then the the froze up. I ejected the disc, reset the system and no disc playback at all. We still can sign into the network, we can still view saved video and play or download off of the net. The only problem is that the system will not play back any type of disc, nothing!! No PS3, no regular DVD, no BD. Nothing!!
I did the full reformat the next day, 5 hours and nothing. Called Sony tech support, which BTW is a joke. The only thing they could help me with is to let me know they would be sending me a box out and I would be required to send the PS3 back in. 3 weeks later I will or will not get a new unit. All of this is at Sony's discretion. If it has dust in it, it may void the warranty, really!! I was kind of upset with Sony at this policy, I have over $800.00 in a six week old system and this is supposedly their mantle piece and they are providing warranty service like this. Shame on Sony for this!! They should be willing or able to have this swapped out via a local distributor. If they are serious about this PS3 for the next 10 years as I have read, they need to offer a much better warranty program. I have a $800.00 set up sitting in the home theater room that is not being used, now we wait on Sony to get us a BOX so it can go all the way back to Texas.
Has anyone experienced this problem or had any warranty issues with a PS3?? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated, as I am kind of stuck at this point and time, I'm simply at Sony's mercy and they sure as hell don't seem to care about my problem!!:(:(

Using windows media connect on the PC I can share the mucis and pictures but would like to be able to remove the PC from having to be on all the time
has anyone had similar issues

It's a Bluetooth thing! correct me if I am wrong. If you switch on/off the PS3 via the console, then the BD remote/controller wouldn't work as the ps3 can't recognize both remote/controller, then you have to plug the controller in for the ps3 to "re-discover" it. Use only the remote/controller to turn it on/off, and you won't have the problem. This usually also happens when you have to have a force shutdown via the console. Hope this helps.
I have a vsx-82txs, and when I play any blu-ray movie on my ps3, it says "unsupported video mode." 1080p works just fine in games and the ps3 menu, only when the movie starts do I get this message. bladerunner2376 02-17-08, 01:33 PM Hello, I have been searching everywhere and although I found a few threads, they end abruptly with no conclusion.
My PS3 will not play any of my Verbatim 8.5gb Double Layer DVD's. Sometimes the menu/trailers will appear, but thats it. The screen goes black directly after and none of the playback options from the controller have any affect. I have had no problems playing any of these DVD's in my 360. All of my "regular" dvd's play fine on the PS3.
Currently, I am using HD DVD Decrypter and then DVD Shrink. All settings in these programs are default aside from any related to media type (DL vs. Single).
Thank you for any help.
sambow87 02-18-08, 12:32 AM Ok, so an update on my issues with CoD4 online.
So I decided to hardwire the unit (PS3) to the router. Everything seemed to be working a little faster yet it still kind of does the "pause" thing every once in a while and then resolve itself. Now when I go to find match, some times it sticks on Downloading Game Settings. If that unsticks, then I don't get the "pause" thing in the menu any more.
When playing in game, here is where the lag is more prevalent. Anytime there is a bunch of action on screen, it sometimes starts to "pause." When I die and it goes to kill cam, it "pauses." It doesn't let me hit the box single instantly to get back into the game. Also when hitting select to see game stats, it doesn't show up that fast. This is pretty frustrating and I'm not sure what else to do.
We have an Xbox 360 with CoD4 hooked up to the same system and same router. We experience none of these issues while playing online. Not a single one. No lag at all. We do have certain ports opened up for the xbox though.
Some stats:
NAT2
Upnp is available
What ports can I open or what can I do to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance!
Sam
rdtx2005 02-18-08, 08:31 AM I have an issue with the Onkyo HT-R550 receiver and the HDMI Pass Through.
I got it working last night, but when I turn both machines off last night and turned them on today, my Sharp Aquos now displays that there is an incompatible signal, please check your output settings.
Is there something i'm missing from the setup of the receiver for passthrough?
sambow87 02-18-08, 04:00 PM Now CoD4 freezes when i'm having the Downloading Game Settings error, when I try to play Split Screen and start the game, it freezes in the same spot. Has anyone came up with a workaround for this or are there any rumors of a future update from sony that would allow PS3 Game upscaling? Thanks for all help.

Is there something i'm missing from the setup of the receiver for passthrough? Are you able to view the AVR menu on your Aquos? If not, make sure everything's connected securely. Also, make sure you have the HDMI monitor setting set to "yes." Otherwise, it must be something either on the display end or the PS3 end.

Has anyone came up with a workaround for this or are there any rumors of a future update from sony that would allow PS3 Game upscaling? Thanks for all help. The problem, as you've noticed, is that your display isn't scaling the image. Or, more properly speaking, instead of scaling the image, it's just filling up the rest of the screen with black pixels. That may be because you've got it hooked up to a specific input that sounds like it was designed for exact pixel mapping and/or a DVI-HDMI connection (thus you end up with a much smaller 720p image on a 1080p display). I'd guess there's something remaining to be configured properly on your display and probably in a different HDMI port.
tex1080 02-18-08, 07:56 PM Unfortunately my TV is a first gen 1080P tv.... i.e. it displays 1080P but only accepts up to 1080i input. You can trick the TV by hooking a 1080P display up to the HDMI-2 Port (and set the PS3 up as a comp in the net command device menu) which the tv bypasses the signal directly to the screen. But if the PS3 is outputting 720P content i end up with letterbox viewing.

The idea would be that you'd adjust your computer's output resolution to match your display's resolution, so it sounds like that input won't do any scaling of the original image. Instead, it just puts black borders around the original 720p image to make it fit your display's native resolution. Your workaround is flawed. If you can figure out a way to scale your any 720p material coming from your PS3 to 1080p before it gets to your display, then you'll be fine. But I'm also not sure that will work either, since your TV looks like it may have some odd resolution technology.
It looks like you'll just have to be stuck with "lowly" 720p via your other HDMI port! Oh, the horror! :D
Hello All,
I bought Guitar Hero 80's encore recently and was dissappointed to find out that the wireless guitar does not want to work. The regular contollor will, but not the guitar. Any ideas on if and how i can get the wireless guitar to work with the 80's version??
Is it the Rock Band wireless guitar? I think that may only work with Rock Band... but don't quote me on that.

Neither the RB or GHIII guitars work with the older PS2 GH games.

Any ideas on if and how i can get the wireless guitar to work with the 80's version??Your question's a little confusing. By "wireless" guitar, are you referring to the GH3 guitar for PS3? By "regular controller," do you mean the PS2 GH1/2 guitar? If so, PS3 GH peripherals and games are incompatible with PS2 peripherals and games, and vice versa.
Thanks for the feedback and info. Is there a way to connect a wired GH1/2 guitar to a PS3 or do I just need to dust off my PS2?
confidenceman 02-19-08, 06:43 PM Thanks for the feedback and info. Is there a way to connect a wired GH1/2 guitar to a PS3 or do I just need to dust off my PS2?Nope. Keep your PS2 connected and running for any of those old GH games.

I have an issue with output of ripped music over HDMI. My files (ripped on the PS3 or PC) play back on two channels of a 5.1 PCM signal over HDMI. My reciever will only layer surround processing over a 2 channel PCM signal. Is there anyway to configure the PS3 to output 2-channels PCM, but still get games over 5.1 (I've figured this out already for CDs, but I hate to shuffle them)
My apologies in advance if this has already been (repeatedly) answered. Life is too short to check 38 pages, and search was no help.
Raven3698 02-21-08, 10:24 AM Hey guys I'm new to the forums and I found you guys while searching for answers...
I just bought a 40gig PS3 on Tuesday, and when I hooked it up everything was fine. But the next day, my start-up screen with all the settings was green instead of the black it was the night before... I thought this could be from the HDMI cord I am using to connect it to my Sony TV. But then I find that the settings screen changes color each month? Is this why it is a different color than black? Is there a way to set it to one color?
Next problem I encountered was a Popping sounds with audio. It happens manly when I am at the settings main screen and I put in a Blu-ray. The screen goes black like the system turns off, then it show my input channel name, and finally goes into the blu-ray. The audio ‘Pops’ I’m talking about occur while the screen is black. I thought about buy the Component cords to hook the PS3 up instead of HDMI, but I don’t know if that will stop the popping. What causes this, and how can I fix it?
gjabo178 02-21-08, 12:51 PM Okay, the screen color changes through out the day and will be black at night. I believe the colors for the day change based on the month.
You can download or upload wallpaper. So theoretically you could create a black jpg image and use that as your wallpaper.
Regarding the sound issue. Are you using the HDMI cable to carry your sound?
Raven3698 02-21-08, 01:16 PM Yes I am.. I tried to use an optical but it wouldn't put out sound even with that selected in the audio settings

But quickly: the problem you've discovered is that the source is 2-channel (your music files). However, the PS3 will send out the audio signal as 5.1 with 3.1 channels empty; hence, you get 2-channel output that can't be matrixed (since from your receiver's perspective it's already 5.1). The easiest work-around is to manually switch your audio settings in your PS3 to 2-channel (unchecking the 5.1 formats), then your receiver will be able to matrix it to 5.1. It's a flaw of the current way the PS3 processes audio. It kinda sucks, but I'm one of those "purists" who prefers my music in 2-channel anyway. :D

What causes this, and how can I fix it?That your display shows that whole process of going black, displaying input, then going to your Blu-ray is totally normal. That's how the console works. The "popping" sound, though, is not necessarily normal. It sounds like that's happening as part of the HDMI handshake process. It could just be how your display or AVR works, or it could be something configured improperly (display, PS3, AVR), or it could be faulty hardware/cabling somewhere.
How do you have your audio options configured on your PS3? On your display? Are you using an AVR? How is it configured? Have you tried a different HDMI cable?
Raven3698 02-21-08, 02:49 PM As of now I have the audio set as HDMI as well. As for the tv they are the same way they have been since I bought it.. my Dvd player is hooked up Via HDMI also and it works pretty well it only does the popping sound once and a great while. I have not tried a different cable, Would it matter that its not a Sony Cable? but it is a HDMI 1.3a cable.
JoshuaL 02-21-08, 09:03 PM Hello,
trying to find a work around so that i can play my SACD's over my fiber optic line in multi-channel format..
i was told that firmware ver 2.0.0 allowed this but i can not find a source to download from.
if you have/know where i can find it please let me know
HDMI is required for SACD multichannel audio. Optical cables can only carry 2.0 from SACDs & cannot handle the bandwidth of anything else.
danielwd 02-22-08, 12:53 AM I bought a LINKSYS WRT 546 Wireless Router a couple of days ago in order to play PS3 online. It worked well until today.
While playing FIFA online, I got an error and I guess I got booted offline. I think I think I lost my internet service for a few minutes, then it came back.
When I tried to go back and play online the FIFA told me I was not connected and I needed to go back and check my settings.
After doing this, I keep timing out on "Obtaining the I.P. Address".
I chose everything the same way I did originally, a couple of days ago when it worked fine. Now for some reason it is not working. I select "easy" and scan to find my access point, successfully enter my WEP key code, then I have everything on automatic.
But something is up, because when it tries to connect at the end, the PS3 is not "obtaining an I.P. address". What should I do?
Thanks in advance.
Raven3698 02-22-08, 07:05 AM Ok guys I went and bought a PS3 Component Cable yesterday and no more Popping from the speakers... Thanks for your help on that..
But the questions just keep coming...
Anybody know when they are going to fix the download speed on the PSN?
Is there a way to actually use the background downloads? I get the option and when I click it, it stops the download... it took like 5 hours to download one thing...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but SACD have pretty tight DRM for full quality that can only occur over the HDMI interface, not the Optical. It's not a bandwidth issue. It reduces to 2.0 over the optical because of the DRM.

That sounds right because optical can carry 5.1 DTS with no problem so I wouldn't think it would be a bandwidth problem with SACD, that's just a guess on my part though.
oldschool JAWA 02-23-08, 02:58 AM I'm trying to figure out why when I watch a standard dvd with my Ps3 that the audio is not seeming very loud and doesn't really have much surround to it. I was using an HD-a35 player for watching standard def and everything seemed fine with the audio on it but I got rid of it and am now using the ps3 for everything. Wondering if it has something to do with my reciever, an onkyo 805, in my setting or something. The PCM light is lit up on my reciever when watching standard def as that is what I have it set to for blu-ray playback. Could this be the problem? Maybe the ps3 sends standard def audio tracks as 2.0 pcm and my receiver is matrixing the surrounds??

Go to 805 set up menu. Sound formats For SDVD most are DD or DTS.
For that input set it if source is DD then set it to DD. I think you might have yours set to last valid. If so it defaults to PCM Multichannel if that was the last source from a game.

You do that by unchecking the other possible resolutions (720p and 1080i). So long as the game and your display are capable of it, that'll work. If you've done that, it's not even possible for the game to display at 720p.

1. Is it better to set the PS3 to 1080p/24 on or auto to force 24Hz playback of Blu-rays?
2. Currently I have the PS3 set to RGB full, super white on and RGB/YGB set to auto, is this correct?
Am I missing anything?

jkyte,
I have held off from purchasing the PS3 with expectations that sony will figure out the proper fix for all defects people are seeing.

1080p/24 is only advisable if your projector can accept it. Auto is a decent option, but if you have a VP in the middle, 24p set "on" may be required to ensure that your getting the right signal.
RGB full and superwhite are options that you need to test out with calibration tools (like Avia) to see if your projector supports those modes or not. You might be better of checking with the projector forums about how they setup their ps3's.

Maveri9720 02-25-08, 08:22 PM I've got a quick question:
I plan on buying a PS3 in alittle while here and I was looking ahead to my connections on the back of my Pioneer VSX-1014TX. I only have 2 optical in's and both are used. 1 is for my Tivo and the other is my 60" SXRD audio out, so I don't have an open slot to directly connect the PS3 to my receiver. If I connected the HDMI cable from the PS3 to my SXRD, will the digital content be passed out of the audio out of my SXRD and into my receiver in full DD? The SXRD's speakers are off.
Excuse my ignorance regarding HDMI. I have no experience with them b/c I have only used components, so I know little about them. I am assuming this will work, b/c I have my OTA antenna connected to my tv and I use the digital audio out from the SXRD to my receiver and I get full DD. I just wanted confirmation that I will get full DD passed through the tv connected with HDMI to my receiver over the digital audio out, before I spend the money on the PS3.
Thanks for the help.

What does VP mean and also, if I set 24p to 'on', what happens if I play a 1080p Blu-ray that isn't 24p (if that even exists)?
Any idea about setting RGB/YBR to auto?

VP = video processor/scalar, not commonly used, but high-end projectors tend to use them since the picture is for 80"+ screens.
If the source on the BD is not 24p, then the BD will output in whatever format it is built for. All movies are filmed in 24p nowadays, so this might be an issue with tv shows that are released on BD, but I didn't notice with my Planet Earth discs.
As for RGB and YBR, check the ps3 faq (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=979687) in the Blu-Ray Player section.

So I got a PS3 a few weeks ago and I am wondering about one thing. I've played many games like Spider Man 3, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, Fifa 08, Devil May Cry 4, Virtua Tennis 3, Burnout Paradise and they were all smooth and fine. But Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Timeshift had some bad screen tearing. Even Warhawk had a few tearing, but nothing compared to Uncharted or AC. I also played Heavenly Sword Demo, and it had some bad tearing.
I did some research on this and I saw that some people were having the same issue, but some weren't. But I am wondering, is this a problem with my TV (I have a 42" Sharp Aquos), my PS3 or just the game.
And is there anything I can do to fix this???

spav1789 02-27-08, 08:35 PM Hi, I'm currently having a really wierd display problem with my ps3. I am using an Element Electronics FLX-2210 22" LCD TV which has up to 1080i support. My ps3 is the 60gb model which I got back in may '07. I am also using an hdmi cable.
Now for the problem...I recently bought and started playing Yakuza (ps2). I went to settings in game and changed the display to 16:9 and then proceeded to play. When I first started playing it, it was working fine. However, when I turned off the system and came back later to play it and the ps3 went into game, the screen went blank for a second and then instead of scaling down to 480p settings it remained at 1080i. This is a problem because the top half of the screen is now at the bottom and the bottom half is now at the top, with a nice line right through the middle. I've tried multiple things to try to fix it, for one, turning off the system and then turning it back on and holding it for 5 seconds to restore default settings. I also tried deleting my save data for yakuza. I also tried switching out the hdmi cable for a composite cable I have, and still the same problem remained of it not scaling down. In the end I decided to restore all the defaults of the ps3 and yet it still didn't work. I've played other ps2 games on this tv without a problem before so I'm not sure why its suddenly doing this now.
Heres a picture of the problem:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v423/chiknman/0227082025.jpg
I should also note that I've tried custom settings of just 720p and 480p and it still doesn't scale down (though in displaying the game in 720p it doesnt cut the screen in half as seen with the 1080i display)
Thanks for the help.

confidenceman 02-27-08, 09:20 PM Hi, I'm currently having a really wierd display problem with my ps3.That doesn't look like a scaling issue. Something else is going on. Does this only happen with that particular game? If so, it may be game-specific. But that doesn't look like any game issue I've ever seen. My gut response when I see that pic is to think that something's up with your set (not) accepting certain resolutions from the PS3.
Also, have you tried different upscaling settings under the game settings for PS2 scaling (not DVD playback)? Did you go back and turn off the in-game 16:9 setting? From your description, it sounds like that's what caused the problem in the first place. It's possible that the in-game 16:9 setting is having issues with whatever PS2 upscaling settings you have enabled on your PS3.

I've tried both turning the ps2 settings to normal (originally had it full screen) and changing it back to 4:3. I just got the set back in January, so other than playing alot of oblivion and maybe a little bit of soul calibur 3(ps2) I havent used it much yet.

Johnny Dunn 02-28-08, 12:20 AM I bought the 80 gb PS3 w/motorstorm on Sunday (3/07 Mfg date) and tried setting it up, but optical drive was bad. The light came on, but I never got the option to play the DVD. Did this with 3 different DVDs. I called Sony and the rep held my hand through the reset process. When it didn't work again, she told me it was the optical drive and said I should return it.
She is part of the optical drive trouble shooting team and said about 10% of the people she speaks with have this problem. So I'm guessing the other 90% should simply reset the PS3 and it should work.
It all kind of worked out since I'll now wait for the new bundle with the dualshock 3 and metal gear solid 4 package coming out in June.

The XMB's default background color changes depending on the current month of the year, and it changes brightness depending on the time of day. A major color change occurs on the 15th and 25th of each month, the color gradually changes between those dates, but the major change is during the three days before those dates in each month. However, a later firmware revision (1.90; released July 23, 2007) allows users change the background of the XMB to display any photograph saved on the console's hard drive.

Not familiar with Onkyo, but my Yamaha shows the PCM signal that the PS3 decodes True HD into and passes to the AVR. Since the PS3 won't bitstream True HD, the amp won't see True HD, just PCM. Results are the same, however.

What you need is a router to share that one internet connection with multiple clients (laptops, pcs, ps3, etc). I would recommend picking up something solid like the Linksys wrt54g or the like and then you can setup a wireless connection between the ps3 and the linksys or use a wired link if dragging the cable from the router to the ps3 isn't a big deal.

Yes, you can get a HDMI to DVI cable that will allow you to do this. Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231) has a few you can buy.
As for the audio, the DVI side of it will not be connected to receive. So you will need some other method for getting audio (toslink or maybe use hdmi to an AVR first).

Quick way to play is plug your modem into PS3. Go into network settings PS3. Run auto set up. Then go to playstation network store. Try to buy something it will then tell you you need an account. Follow directions. You really need a router though. You will want to have ps3 wired for online games better connection. Wireless is not as good. You can get a wireless router with extra Ethernet ports. I have my modem, wired router and my wireless bridge router all in my entertainment center. My mac in another room is connected to the wireless bridge its an apple airport express. Its also connected to my 805 so I can stream music from iTunes to my avr over optical. It also works with a pc. Get a router.

I have an 805 too. So the simple answer is to make sure the the PS3 is set to PCM and not Bitstream then right and you will see Multichannel on the amp? I'm used to my A35 where you set Bitstream.
I bought The latest Die Hard and was very disappointed with the sound last night then I realized I was listening to the DTS core which I guess is unavoidable with the PS3? With correct software support (an update?) this could be avoided? I'm assuming I can still properly hear any Blu Ray with PCM or TrueHD at least though as long as I properly set the PS3 to PCM?

Set your ps3 for PCM, bitstream won't help you.
As for the DTS-HD-MA update, you'll see a lot of people clamoring for it, but it isn't here yet. There is a chance, but who knows when it might arrive.

I had to do that too; they said it would take two weeks AFTER they saw the broken one....I was very PO'd that they were going to take so long. They wouldn't agree to ship the replacement before they received my bad unit, even though I was willing to pay to guarantee it. And the time you don't have a PS3 is counting against your warranty period too!
Anyway, the box took about a week to get here, but it came with prepaid overnight UPS back to Sony, and they shipped the same day they got mine so it was back to me in 3 days. At least that part went faster than I'd expected. And the replacement is working so far too. One thing; somebody HAS to be home to sign for it, so keep an eye on the tracking #. Good luck.

It however would not connect, finally using some things from my current CCNA 1 class, I manually filled in the IP, subnet, ect ect. Works fine now, for some reason I guess it just couldn’t obtain an address automatically from the router.
Other then that it’s been running good, I get 5.1 through my component and 1080i.

Thanks, will try today, picked one up -- just gotta get home to try it. The sampler disk is the PS3 network disk that is packaged with it and it has BR trailers on it (300, Bond, etc...). I just find it odd that they would have a montage on the sample trailer that says "amazing sound" or something similar and not encode it digital 5.1 or higher... but hopefully thats all it is, will let everyone know for sure once I try the new BR disk. On a side note I tried a normal dvd in it last night and it was in 5.1 so, I am think the the sampler is not encoded.
Thanks

Yep, tried a real BR disc and all good. Odd that Sony wouldn't encode a decent audio track on the trailers everyone can see with their PS3... Oh well at least it was something stupid and nothing wrong with my setup.

ioannisds 03-08-08, 12:12 PM I had a strange issue pop up last night that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. I registered my PSP with my PS3, and then proceeded to mess around a little bit with remote play and such. Nothing unusual. A little while after I got done, I turned on my PS3 to watch a movie, and my remote control would not respond (though it did turn on the unit). I thought the batteries might be dead, so I tried my Sixaxis controller, and it would not connect with the PS3 (the four lights just kept flashing and flashing). So I turned the PS3 off, then on again, and everything seemed fine. Has anyone else had any Bluetooth issues like this, and could they in anyway be related to the remote play experimenting I was doing earlier (the only thing out of the ordinary from the PS3s normal use for me)? Thanks for any input.

Ok, so my PS3 seems to be having slight problems or at least to me it seems that way. I have had lockups on my PS3 since early on when I got the system (launch 60gig). They are usually spread out over time and not everytime I load up a game. Concerned me a little but everything always worked afterward. I could always restart the unit from the front button and sometimes from the controller after a freeze. Many times I could still hear the music or game volume still playing with a frozen screen.
So last night I go to play Uncharted again for a second go through. I pop in the disc and it starts up. One of the first cut screens begins to play but the audio sync is off by about 1 second. The cut scene also "skips" once or twice. Scene ends and I start to play the game. No problems but worries me. So I start again. This time audio sync is fine and cut scene skips I think once. Start playing game and in about 5 minutes game freezes. Still sound going and I turn it off from controller. Restart Uncharted and cut scene plays fine and I continue to play game for 1 1/2 hours with no problems.
This morning I test it again with Uncharted by going to some different chapters. I had one cut scene skip but about 3 others played fine. Game froze once after only about ten minutes of testing. Shut off from front button and upon restart loaded new cut scene that played fine and game played fine for about 20 minutes then I stopped playing.
Put in COD 4 to test out another game and picked the chapter that has all the credits in the beginning and person being put into vehicle. That froze up on my about 2 minutes in. Shut off from front button and replayed scene and played all the way through and fine for next 30 minutes. Quit to go to work.
Like I said, I have had games freeze before kinda randomly. Though some games (Rockband & Nhl 08) have never froze. My PS3 is completely out in the open. I have read a lot about blu ray drives failing, and I hope this is not the case. I will try some more testing later. Anyone have any thoughts? Think that something is possibly corrupt on hard drive? Should I do a reformat?
Thanks!!

My take is you have a bad unit. It was never "right" and now it's getting worse. Mine started freezing right out of the box and everyone here (and Sony support) said to sent it back. Most NEVER freeze. My replacement unit hasn't locked up (yet). The lasers that have gone bad, fom what I've read here, don't lock up the system, they just quit reading discs.
Well, I'm out of warranty (Dec. 06 unit). I don't know though, it's weird. I can go months without problems with plenty of play then I'll get a couple of lockups in a row. Most of the times with the lockups they will happen early when I start to play the game. Then after a shut down from front button and restart I could play for hours with no issues what so ever. Sometimes after a shut down I will turn off the back switch for 10-20 minutes and then power back up. Don't know if this really does anything but it makes me feel like it has. LOL
These are some of the reason why I think maybe a reformat could resolve issues? Something getting messed up with hard drive.

I don't do much gaming, my problems were all with BD and DVD discs. But I noticed that if I made sure the disc was spotless, it didn't freeze up so often. Washing with soap and water would sometimes make it work long enough to watch a movie. Not always. Maybe you have smudged discs or a dirty optical lens? Even my replacement seems to be particular about this.
Yeah never had a problem with BR or DVD. Actually after this happened last night I watched Count of Monte Cristo (good flick) on DVD with no problems at all. I'll have to watch a BR tonight to see if I get a problem. I can recall once in the past during a BR I got some weird artifacts (small little multicolored blocks) pop up on screen. Looked really weird almost like data was scramble. Lasted two seconds then was gone and haven't seen it since.
Freezes really didn't bother me before, Uncharted was just a little weird last night because of the audio being slightly off in cut scene.
vumcrab 03-10-08, 01:33 PM Hey, guys. I've spent the last 30 minutes searching this thread and haven't quite got a hit on my problem, so I'd like your help and advice please.
I have a PS3 60gb for my boys to game on and a 40gb for me and the wife to watch DVD and BD. We got both this past Christmas and I immediately upgraded both to v2.10.
This weekend I splapped Narnia on DVD in the PS3 60 and the picture begins to "wiggle" and "scramble" on screen to the point where it's not watchable. Also, the colors on the Narnia DVD go very dark and then back to normal repetitively. It does all this about every 20 seconds. The TV is a very old Zenith 4:3 SD CRT. I tried another DVD, Spy Kids, and the same thing happened. I then put in Chicken Run on DVD and no problems at all. I tried cleaning the two DVD's with the problems, but it didn't help.
I then carry the Narnia DVD to the PS3 40gb and it looks beautiful on my Sony 52" xbr5. To my knowledge, this was the first time we tried to play a DVD on the 60gb since it's mostly used for gaming. BTW, played COD4 and Rock Band on the 60 gb with no problems at all.
Anybody have any advice or seen this before? Thanks.

Should be pretty easy as long as the PS3s are accessible and the cords are long enough/ just unhook the wires from the PS3s, no need to go behind the TVs etc. The wires/ cords are all compatible, no? I did similar swapping between an 80gb and a 40gb and it was very fast.

True. My 40gb is wired to my xbr by HDMI and the 60gb isn't, but I should still be able to get a good test anyway, don't you think?

Yep. As far as I know the 60gb has all the same outputs as the 40. And that might end up showing where your problem lies; if the problem follows a player or tv, then you can try different cabless on the suspect device.

thenry1989 03-10-08, 03:48 PM Hey Everyone.
I have KF-42WE620 Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection Television with HD-Monitor. The HD-Monitor enables the display of 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals. I was just wondering if I bought a PS3 and hooked it up to this TV-set I should get the full HD experience right? Also in order for me to do so, would I need to get any other cables (such as HDMI cable) for the TV set to display the image in HD? Thanks a lot in advance.
Here (http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=173763) is a picture of the TV as well as the features.

You need to get component or hdmi cable to get HD. The cables that come with the PS3 will not give you HD.

The regular ps3 cables are composite and will only output 480i. If you buy the component cables they can go up to 1080i for BD/1080p for games. HDMI will let you go to 1080p for BD, games, and upscaled DVD's (480p otherwise).

Dead on. I use the exact same 6' mono HDMI cable to connect my ps3 to my hdtv except I got the 24awg cable and it's a little too stiff. If you have tight quarters, definitely get the 28awg as its easier to work with.
BTW, NO problems at all with that cable. You'll be happy

Thanks!!
It seems like these freezes I get are coming more often when I first start the system. After I reset it when it has frozen I can play for extended hours no problem. Case in point, I did a little more testing last night and I put in COD 4 and picked the level "Shock and Awe". Get right to the point where action is gonna happen (shooting grenade launcher from helicopter) and it freezes. This is 5 minutes after turning on. Reset the PS3 and try again and I can play through the entire level no problems.
Then watch POTC 3 on DVD (almost three hours) and then without shutting system down play 1 1/2 hours of COD 4 online and game of NHL 08. No problems at all.
Could files on HDD be corrupt or maybe I should let it load up all of my friends lists before game starts? I have the info bar turned off but I'm thinking maybe if I start a game up quick (since almost all the freezes come early in play) that my friends list is still loading and a hiccup in the PSN is causing the games to freeze.
I'm confused. Any thoughts?
thenry1989 03-11-08, 12:55 PM Thanks again for the feedback guys. I just have one issue I want to get cleared up. This morning I checked out my TV and found out that it doesn't have an HDMI input jack, only a DVI input jack. So I went on eBay and found this (http://cgi.ebay.ca/6FT-HDMI-To-DVI-GOLD-Cable-For-PS3-LCD-PLASMA-TV-DVD-T1_W0QQitemZ150224463932QQihZ005QQcategoryZ149974QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) cable, which would still get me an HD picture correct? Since it isn't an HDMI male to HDMI male cable, would if affect the quality or HD picture/signal output in any way?
Thanks so much again, all the help is greatly appreciated :D
ioannisds 03-11-08, 01:07 PM A much, much better choice on all fronts (price and quality) would be to visit monoprice.com and purchase from them. I've ordered loads of cables from them (as have many others), and I am always very pleased at the quality, and how inexpensive everything is for what you get. I'm sure they have an HDMI - DVI adaptor, and for less than the cost of that one on Ebay, including shipping.

HDMI to DVI cables are common and using one of the AVS sponsors is definatley a preferred method for most of us here.
That said, DVI doesn't affect quality, the difference is that DVI does not have any audio (shouldn't be a problem if you do HDMI to an AVR, then HDMI to DVI from the AVR to tv) and DVI does not always support HDCP (check your tv manual for details). If it supports HDCP then your fine, if not, then you'll probably have to look around the "For Sale" area in the display section for Moome's helpful (but probably not legal) products.

thenry1989 03-11-08, 02:46 PM Haha Splints. Luckily my DVI supports HDCP.
Here is what it says in the Manual:
Digital Visual Interface (DVI-HDTV): Supports a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital TV receivers) that have compatible interfaces.
Also the DVI input jack is right beside two other input jacks titled Audio R and L, and these three jacks are encirlced with a white box around them. What could that possibly mean?
Lastly what do you mean by AVR? Sorry I am not familiar with this acronym.
Thanks again.
AVR - Audio/Video Receiver (I think)
DVI does not carry sound so you will have to have audio coming from the device or from the receiver to those jacks for sound.

Thanks again.Yes, "AVR"=audio/video receiver. Since most receivers these days process video in addition to audio, you'll see this acronym a lot in these here parts.
The reason there's a box around your DVI input and the two RCA jacks (L and R for your 2-channel analog audio) is because DVI doesn't carry audio. I think it's your display's way of reminding of that fact. But if you're running audio to your AVR already, then you don't need to worry about it. If you don't have an AVR, then you'll need to hook up your composite (RCA) cables between your PS3 and your display in addition to the HDMI-DVI cable.
thenry1989 03-11-08, 04:20 PM Yea I don't have an AVR. I looked around and they are all relatively expensive and cost over $100. I will do as confidenceman suggested and hook up the composite RCA cables between the PS3 and the TV as well as the HDMI-DVI cable. Its a lot easier and cheaper that way.
Thanks for the help everyone, greatly appreciated :D
EDIT: I just did a search on Monoprice and I can't find the correct HDMI-DVI cable I need. The DVI head has to look like this (http://cgi.ebay.ca/6FT-HDMI-To-DVI-GOLD-Cable-For-PS3-LCD-PLASMA-TV-USA-T1_W0QQitemZ150224464427QQihZ005QQcategoryZ149974QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). At Monoprice all the DVI heads look like this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2661&seq=1&format=1#largeimage), with 9 "pins" then a space then 9 "pins" again. I need a HDMI-DVI cable where the DVI head does't have the space and has 24 "pins". Does anyone know of another website where they might be able to sell these in the excellent quality that Monoprice provides?
splinters 03-11-08, 04:56 PM heh, I'm not conversant in DVI, but this is a good point, check Blue Jeans Cable (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi-cables/index.htm) for more options. They also have a good section about how to choose the right cable connection.

The reason for that pin configuration is that the omitted pins are for DVI-D dual link. HDMI is a single-link system; the spec provides for a potential dual-link interface, but to this date that has never been implemented on any consumer device (or any other device, so far as I know) and it's unlikely to happen (and would require a larger HDMI connector, "Type B" in the spec, with 29 pins). Any HDMI-DVI cable will always be single-link even if it has those pins; if those pins are present, they're just not hooked up to anything.

Blue Jeans Cable (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/hdmi-cables/index.htm)
thenry1989 03-11-08, 07:39 PM I've read up on it and its quite confusing stuff. I have a DVI-D dual link jack (6th one down):
http://www.cs.unc.edu/Research/stc/FAQs/Video/dvicon.gif
So technically I could use the DVI-D single link cable, correct?
Or a DVI-HDMI cable that looks like this:

Right or am I missing something else here?
splinters 03-11-08, 08:04 PM sounds about right since the signal is digital, you won't need support for the analog versions.

Chris Nick 03-15-08, 02:48 PM My PS3 has stopped recognizing any discs. This includes Blu Ray discs, DVDs and game disks. I have rarely had skipping issues or had a disc stop operating in the middle. The only time was last weekend when a Blu Ray disc stopped working and froze after the coming attractions. In trying to fix things I noticed that the BD memory file had no info in it. I was wondering if it was corrupted so I deleted it, assuming that when a new disc loaded it would rebuild the file. I returned the bad disc to Netflix and got a replacement. Now no discs are recognized at all. I'm wondering if I deleted something important. It doesn't make sense that there was an official "delete" option if I could cause the machine irreperable harm.
So here's what I've done to try to remedy the issue:
I just uploaded firmware 2.17. When this didn't work to fix the problem, I reset to all orginal default settings. When that didn't work, I reformatted the harddrive and started over in setting everything up. Still the same problem. No disc are recognized at all.
Any suggestions of other things I could try. I purchased this from SonyStyle in late November, so I'm sure I'm outside of any return period.
confidenceman 03-15-08, 03:38 PM ^^^ There have been some reports of this issue. Call Sony and get your unit repaired/replaced.

Thanks much. They will be sending out the return label etc.. Does anyone know if this issue has been solved in more recent versions? Mine was a September 2007 build. I just hope this doesn't happen again.
iamkoza 03-17-08, 01:29 PM Couple of quirks I am asking about, i tried searching and haven't found any new information.
1-Controller assignment. I play rockband frequently, I now also play mlb 08. Rock band drums and guitar dongle are plugged in via usb 24/7, so the PS3 assigns those controllers 1, 2. My sixaxis is given the 3 assignment. I was able to permanently assign my BT movie remote to controller 7. Is there a way to permanently assign the sixaxis to controller 1? IMO, having to remove the rockband usb equipment is an unacceptable solution.
2-Video output. So the GT5 demo is the only game i've tried that lets you set 1080p with an in-game menu. Every other game uses 720p regardless if the game can support 1080p. Is there a work-around that doesn't involve having to manually reconfigure the allowable video modes in the xmb menu? Again, IMO having to do this is a pain and I am surprised a more user friendly workaround hasn't been developed by sony (considering the influx of 1080p lcd and plasma tv's since the ps3's release).
I've had my ps3 for about 6 months (got one of the last 60 GB ones). I have it hooked up to my 58" 1080p plasma as well as a 5.1 surround system and I really enjoy the system and what it brings to the table in terms of movie playback as well as games (rock band, MLB 08 the show mainly)

If a game is native at 1080p, it'll output at 1080p. Otherwise, for your set, the PS3 will output games at their native resolution. So for a 720p game, that means it will output 720p. Since your display's 1080p, it'll do the scaling itself.
Just because a game can output at a higher resolution, doesn't mean it should. For most games, the reason these higher resolutions are possible is to compensate for bad display scalers or resolution incompatibility issues. If your display's scaler sucks, then you will have to force the output resolution in the XMB. Otherwise, leave it be and rest assured that you're getting the best PQ possible.
MrSniffer 03-17-08, 04:21 PM I just purchased Lost Via Domus and installed it on my PS3 (Firmware 2.10, 60GB, video @ 1080i). The graphic output has a huge number of spikes radiating from characters heads, eyes turn red, and other really ugly graphic rendering problems. Not every object, not all the times, but quite frequently.
It looks as if it is a software rendering problem. I have ZERO problems with other PS3 games, which leads me to believe it is not a problem with my PS3 hardware. Does anyone else see this defect on their PS3s?
MrSniffer 03-20-08, 05:07 AM Is there any way for me to run some hardware diagnostics on my PS3? I'd hate to send my unit off for a service call unless there truly is a problem, such as bad RAM or a busted cell processor.

Splintie: ONLY on my latest game purchase (Lost: Via Domus) I see horrendously frequent giant spikes emitting from heads, etc. Other strange rendering artifacts also. Bad RAM in one of the cells might account for it, since based on my web browsing it doesn't seem to be a pervasive bug that others see in the code.

I must admit that i haven't heard of this one. It could be a h/w error, but hard to say without any real diagnostic tools as you mentioned. Sony support should be on this one. If your ps3 purchase is within 30 days, I would just return it to the vendor and ask for an exchange.

I'm having a similar problem with The Show 08. It supports 1080p, and I'm pretty sure I have my PS3 set to output 1080p, but when I play the game it outputs at 720p. It outputs at 1080p when the XMB is up and when I play blu ray movies. Is there another setting that I have overlooked to force to PS3 to output 1080p? Also, for some reason my TV suddenly stopped scaling it. After playing the game for weeks with now issues there is now a black box around the game screen.

If you want to force a particular resolution, you need to uncheck all the other resolutions (except 480p. It won't let you uncheck that resolution since it's a fail-safe). However, if you've got a 1080p set, there's generally no reason to force 1080p unless you know that your display's scaler really sucks or has some specific issue.

Just as the other guy said force it in the PS3 menu. Uncheck all other resolutions but 480p. I had this issue with Rainbow 6 vegas the first one. It say game is 1080p but it looks like crap in 1080p. So if I want to play it I have to force it 720p. Then it looks 100 times better. In 1080p it looks blurry and very bright. All my games look the best in 720p.

I don't know why, but it's a product of the sixaxis controller...
