Hi guys, This is my problem, when I turn on the PS3 it will load the home screen and then immediately the screen will freeze and then start flashing in an array of colors and the the display gets completely distorted. I tried doing the reset (where you hold the start button until the two beeps), and it didn't work (still have screen distortion - bun now the controller will work). So I connected my PS3 to the TV with the default cables that came with the box and tried to reset the PS3, but the same problem still happens.
Any help is appreciated...
Thank you!
Vennie
ETA: I am using:
TV is Samsung 4671
capable of 1080P
using HDMI cable
PS. I posted this in a seperate thread and I should have posted it here. Sorry!

It sounds like there isn't a way to get a functional state. Sony Support is really the best way for these things. I would recommend reformatting the internal HD, but I'm not sure you can even get to it before the freeze.

keithaxis 03-27-08, 03:41 AM Switching TV's with the PS3. I have a 58" 1080P plasma and a 24" 720P TV. Here is the issue when I take the PS3 from the large set to the 720P set I cannot see the menu/control panel no matter what I do. I can play the games on the small set but I cannot see any PS3 menu's. I have adjusted the display to 480 and 720 only and it still only plays games but no menu. I have it using HDMI on both sets. Any reason why the 720 set is having issues seeing the sony menu? but it does allow the game to come up?
wondering if it is an older HDMI issue on this older small 720P set in the toy room...although if hdmi issue why is game seen but not any menus...hope I made sense...

KeithYou must not be unchecking 1080p in the PS3 display options menu. If you don't do that before you switch TVs it'll still be sending a 1080p signal to your 720p TV.
Or just hold down the PS3's power button for 5 seconds (until it beeps once) when you first turn it on and it will reset your video settings for the 720p TV.
Hooking up my PS3 was the final frontier in finishing my HT project. Go figure...I can't get it to work. Before I had the receiver and speakers, the PS3 was hooked up via HDMI directly to my Samsung 5064. It worked perfectly. Now that the HT is set-up, I'm having to run it through the receiver, which is in the front coat closet where I had everything pre-wired. The guys that did the pre-wiring said I couldn't run HDMI over 30 feet (and since I didn't know any better at the time I believed them), so I am using component from the receiver to the TV. Anyway, since I can't run HDMI into the 661 and connect to the TV via component, I bought the Sony brand component cables to do the connection. I plugged into the DVD component input on my Yamaha 661...NOTHING. It's switched to DVD viewing, I changed the PS3 settings over to component, I reset the PS3 by holding the power button, I've triple checked all the connections, etc. The TV just displays "weak or no signal." I'm stumped, and on the verge of drop kicking the PS3. Does anyone have an idea as to what I'm doing wrong here?
splinters 03-29-08, 05:22 PM So far it sounds like HDMI connection does work, but the video component isn't tested. Have you tested the component cables before? I'm assuming the ps3 to the 661 works fine since it's a new cable, but do you have another component output (cable or satellite tv?) to test the connection with?
So far the two things that aren't validated is the 661 input/output and if the component cables between the 661 and the tv are good or not.

silverwolf0 03-29-08, 08:32 PM I am not sure if this is an issue or not. I am using the official component cables with my ps3 doing 720p on a 32" LCD that supports 1366x768 or whatever the common resolution is. The picture quality looks too soft, as in blurry, the colors are rather washed out or lifeless looking, and the text in the playstation store is so small and blurred looking that I have to get close to see them. I've used the cable before for my PS2 without any problem so I don't think it's the cable. The picture quality reminds me of the Wii, which I've recently sold, which was 480p, because it has the same kind of blurry look to it. It's not the LCD either, as my roommate has hooked up his xbox 360 via component on it before and everything looked very sharp in comparison to the PS3.
Are there any options I can change to mitigate this? I saw this color convergence or overlap fix option in the menu. Should I turn it on?
Also, is it a bad idea to flip the switch on the back once I place the console in standby mode? I know it continually sucks power even when the red light is on, but will shutting it off completely have any damaging effects?
Thanks.
slenser 03-30-08, 02:37 AM I purchased a 40 GB PS3 for Christmas for my kids and it went bad after about a month. I exchanged it and it has been working fine until tonight. I get done watching The Seeker on it with the kids and head upstairs to finish up some homework. My youngest boy asks me if I can help him get Ratchet and Clank to work. Well, what do you know? It did it again. Both systems stopped recognizing any disk media. After some research, it seems the 40GB is plagued with this problem. I wonder if I can exchange it for an 80GB system? Hmmm, I will have to try.
I tried running my CD lens cleaner in it, but I don't even know if it is spinning up. Now I have to try to find that darn receipt!
ludivigo 03-30-08, 04:42 PM When I play widescreen DVDs the sides are cut off like it's in 4:3 mode. I found this on page 9 of this thread:
You have to hit the FILL or STANDARD SCREEN. This only applys to content that is low res. Aka 480p ( since the dvd is so small, the screen displays it very small, hittin gthat Strech/Fill - wil lfix the issues ) at least it does on my 37w3.
What/where is the FILL button? I don't have a BD remote, I use a controller. DVDs worked last week (before firmware update), but now I've got this zoom/crop issue and can't find the right setting.
qthai99 04-01-08, 04:14 PM I'm having problems with the audio through optical from my PS3 to my receiver. When I upgraded to firmware 2.17 and play any dvd or .mp4 file, the sound intermittently turns off for a few seconds. I thought upgrading to 2.20 would fix it but I still get the same problem. Everything worked fine before the 2.17 firmware. Is there some audio setting I need to change on the PS3? Has anyone else have this audio issue?
Auditor_Kevin 04-03-08, 09:25 PM I just love these "post all your problems" master threads. It's a very economical way for everyone's questions to get ignored. :)
Here's my problem, and it could be a big one:
I turn on my PS3 with the controller like usual. It reads my Warhawk disc and gives that background wallpaper, again like usual. I take it out and insert Michael Clayton because I'm going to watch it tonight.
My PS3 recognizes that a bluray disc is inserted. I click on it, and it asks if it's ok for the bluray disc to access the internet. I say "yes". Then....................
Nothing. Just black screen. So I try to eject the disc and it won't let me. I flip the switch on the back of the PS3 and toggle it off/on. Now I can get the disc out. But here's the alarming part:
Now my PS3 won't recognize ANYTHING I put in it. Not Michael Clayton, not any of my games..........NOTHING. It'll accept the discs. It'll spit them back out. Just won't recognize them.
Being as this is the 43rd page, I'm not expecting that many/any eyeballs will see this other than the next poor shmuck with a PS3 problem, but is there anyone out there that can offer advice before I have to ship it up and send it back???????
Everything worked just fine before the god damned firmware upgrade.
Auditor_Kevin 04-03-08, 11:31 PM Update: I called Sony and started the return process. How do I go about backing up my data? Do I need a FAT32 formatted hard drive to back it up?? Of course my portable hard drive is the other kind.
Any suggestions there?
I know I'm just talking to the next guy with a PS3 sob story looking for answers but I'm hoping someone will pick up the trail here......

Most people only see the latest post so your actually more likely to get a response than earlier posts.
If you want to back-up your hard drive, I would recommend getting a USB 2.0 external HD, something larger what your ps3 holds since it will back-up all your saved game and install game info. I think you can find a 500GB USB HD for ~100 nowadays and that should allow you to have persistent storage for any dvd's or traliers you download. Once you get the HD, go to the settings menu and look for the back-up option under system settings, click on it and let it do it's thing (it could take 10 min's to a few hours depending on how big your HD is).
Hope that helps.

Auditor_Kevin 04-04-08, 01:06 AM Thanks for the reply, Splints. I kinda figured you'd be most likely to help since you've been a regular answer guy to the previous few pages.
Another question along those lines: after I nuke the PS3 and restore the data, will I have to redownload all my stuff off the PS3 store? I really don't want to redownload all my Rock Band tracks.....
You ever hear of this backup/reformat/restore combination bringing the disc reader back to life? It doesn't look like it has helped before judging by other forums.
ludivigo 04-04-08, 08:23 AM If you are able to do a back-up it should save all your DLC, no need to re-download.
Hope this is the right place ...
I have a sony rplcd mod a10. PS3 hooked up via hdmi through a monoprice 3x1 switch.
When I load a game (pes2008) from the ps3 main "menu" area the screen is scrambled .. can see the graphics but can't read them.
I also noticed that during the update download .. @ about 50% of completion the screen scrambled.
Anyone seen/heard of this?
I have been using the ps3 since early november, no problems with games/br playback.
Thanks.

Did it finish the download and install the update? Or did that "scramble" stop it? If it just interrupted the download, that isn't a problem. But if it interrupted the install, then you've got an issue.
Otherwise, try all the typical connection troubleshooting first: auto-detect reset (hold on button on console down until second beep), different connections (on display and/or AVR), different cable. Double-check all your video settings in the XMB.

I think someone else mentioned it, but all Downloaded Content and stored games, trailers, music, etc is all backed-up in the same process. Think of it as a full Hard Drive back-up.
The back-up/reformat/restore combo might help a software error if it gets stuck in some odd state, but a hardware failure of the disc drive is more likely a hardware-based problem (mechanical) than software based one (driver). You can try it out anyways and if it doesn't help then send the system in. As long as you have backed-up your system, your set.
Glad to help!

The download was effected not the install.
I tried the ps3 @ lunch today and everything was fine ... weird. I think it may have been an issue with the tv. sony grand wega a10.
johnnycage 04-06-08, 07:33 PM Hey all,
Recently picked up a PS3 for dvd playback and gaming. I had been unable to read a Dolby Digital signal in my Yamaha RX V992 (about 7 years old) receiver via optical or coax from the PS3. It showed only Pro Logic. I am on bitstream out in the PS3.
While experimenting today with various setups and combinations I was able to get a Dolby Digital signal into the amp by powering the receiver off and on during playback on non-Bluray dvd's. This did not work with Spiderman 3.
The only Bluray dvd I have is Spiderman 3 which came with the unit and I have not been able to get a DD signal from it. I remember when I first played Spiderman that the Sony Logo and Movie Logo played in DD but when the film started it went back to Pro Logic.
Any ideas?
Also please advise about any other useful PS3 forums. I have been unable to reach anyone at Sony (recordings) and cannot register or email at their website.
Thanks in advance...

Zuke2962 04-07-08, 03:30 PM Is there a way to re-download and re-install the latest update? I ask becuase either the latest firmware or Warhawk update made my PS3 not recognize my GHIII dongle. I plug it in and and doesn't light up, I tried it in my computer USB and it lite right up. The USB ports on the PS3 all work fine I can charge a controller in all four, but I plug in the GHIII dongle and zippo. Any help is appreciated.
ShrikeT 04-07-08, 04:13 PM I don't think there is a way to redownload a firmware, but if you downloaded Warhawk, you could just delete your local copy and redownload it from your PSN account.
Actually, you may be able to download the latest firmware off their website, copy it to flash drive and try rerunning the update like that.
Zuke2962 04-07-08, 04:27 PM I will try that with the firmware update, but for Warhawk I bought it at the store and not on-line.
ShrikeT 04-07-08, 04:30 PM Well, I think the PS3 still makes a game data file for Warhawk even if you buy it from the store. Go "Games" in the XMB and there is a category called "Game Data" or something to that effect. Deleting that and then trying to play Warhawk again should do the same thing. I'm just speculating though as I've never tried this.

Another option is to back-up your system on an external hard drive and then reformat the whole sucker and reset the ps3 to factory settings and then try again. Otherwise a call to Activision or Sony would be my back-up.

Splints, is that smiley face indicative of sarcasm or are you being truthful here? :D
I've had my 60GB since launch and it's been wonderful.
Since the 2.20 update, I've had what appear to be HDMI handshake issues. Sometimes when I power up the PS3, my screen has a rainbow colored static all over it and it can be remedied by unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable a few times.
I should have mentioned I've tried different cables and different ports. The HDA20 I have works fine with either cable and either port. The PS3 has the very occasional handshake problem with either cable and either port.
Anyone know of a better fix?

iamkoza 04-10-08, 07:13 PM with the upcoming DTS HD MA firmware upgrade, I wanted tomake sure I have my PS3 sound setup correctly.
I'm running hdmi audio to my AVR (Onkyo tx sr705) which can receive multichannel PCM. I have the ps3 sending audio via LPCM. I am not sure which of the audio options I should check off... do I only check the highest possible bitrates? Or if I check everything, will the player automatically utilize the best possible one? Or will it default to the first one it tries that works? I'm still new to the audiophile world, and want to make sure I have things setup right! Thanks in advance for any advice!

LPCM is the correct setting.
As for the audio setup, check off-whatever you have support for in speakers. If you have 7.1 speaker setup then you'll want all of them. If you only have a 5.1 speaker setup, then check all the boxes on the 5.1 setup. Beyond that, you'll have to make an intelligent decision on what your sound system can support. I wouldn't worry about the bitrates, your Onkyo is new enough to support all of those modes. I would honestly recommend running it through the automatic detection vs. trying to manually select each one.
Good Luck!

PeeJHooK 04-13-08, 02:55 AM I need some troubleshooting help.
During bluray movies the video will momentarily black out while the audio remains intact. What could be the problem? I'm using a ps3 as my player and I have it connected via hdmi to a samsung receiver (ht-as720).
I thought it was the BD disc that was bad but then I popped in another one and it still did the same thing.
wmessin 04-17-08, 07:17 AM I figured I'd add my problem here even though I had a separate thread running about it.
the HDMI port went bad on my ps3 last week. It worked fine for 3 months, but now outside of two flickers (when powering on and off) I get nothing but a black screen.
I tested the input to the tv, swapped cords, did a hard reset of the ps3, tried every combination to be sure it wasn't anything else. the only video I get out of the machine is via the composite cable. I did check all of the resolution output settings and they are ok.
I shipped the unit back to Sony yesterday. We'll see how long it takes to get it back.
Auditor_Kevin 04-18-08, 05:09 PM Here's the message I'm getting when I check in on Sony's website to see how my repair is coming along:
Due to high demand, your unit is currently on backorder. The quoted turn-around-time for product exchange through our PlayStation(R) Exchange Center (PEC) is approximately 7-15 business days from the time we receive your unit, not including shipping and handling time. Due to the current backlog the turn-around-time may exceed the quoted 7-15 business days. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.
wmessin 04-18-08, 07:16 PM don't worry, I'm getting the same message. It'll be interesting to compare our real turnaround times.
I am having this problem with my PS3 and movies. During playback of both BRD and DVD movies, about 2-4 times during the movie the sound cuts out, the picture goes black for about 1/2 second, the picture comes back, and then the sound comes back.
Has anyone heard of this problem? I don't know if it's the PS3 or my Sony STR-DG810 receiver. I have the PS3 sending Video/PSM -> Receiver -> TV via HDMI.

I was at a buddy's place and he had the same problem. Turns out that it had to do with the 24fps setting. My buddy had it selected on "on" and once I moved it to automatic, all the movies played without sound drop-outs.
I think what's going on is that if you have TV speakers for your sound output and your outputting 24fps to your tv, it can convert the video but the audio timing doesn't get fully compensated causing drop-outs to re-sync the audio with the video playing.
Try that out and see if that helps or not.

Sheesh. I wonder why mine is taking so long if yours was done so fast. I think they got slammed with a batch of bad 40 gig PS3s made in Sept. 07.
Now we have to face the reality that we are stuck in the refurb pool. Sony took our new units and will be giving us someone else's problems (hopefully fixed but who knows). The thought of getting some kid's abused, cheeto-greased up controller thoroughly disgusts me.

now, everyone says go into audio settings and select optical as the output, then "save" your settings.
so my question is, how do you save your settings
when i go into the sound menu, and select optical output, it pops up the screen where you hit "x" to select/de-select the individual codecs - there is no save option. only options seem to be hitting "x" again which only de-selects whatever codec is highlighted, or "o" which cancels the whole thing and doesn't save settings.
ps - i have bitstream selected as the output style on the bd/dvd settings.
thanks, and sorry if this has been covered before - just when i search on it, all i get is lots of posts saying "save your settings" but no real explanation of how to save it.
lunchblaze 05-02-08, 10:11 PM update -
nm.
for anyone this might help, I hadn't plugged the ethernet cable in when I moved it to my rack, so it was in some loop where it was trying to auto sign in to my account, which prevented me from saving any settings.
unchecked auto-sign in and went back into settings and it let me save.
all good.
right then.

Had the same problem with saying not enough harddrive space. Then all of a sudden it started working. After that I to had small glitches in the game. After a month or so, my saved games started glitching and some I couldnt use. Ended up buying Call of Duty 4, havent touched R&C since b/c i will have to start over again.
If you do find the reason or a solution to fix it. Let me know. I might think about starting over again.
splinters 05-03-08, 05:33 PM If your have a lot of games and demo's and download content every week you'll fill up the 20/40/60/80GB pretty quickly. Most people I know usually download and delete content and save some. What I think this does is cause HD fragmentation, it will have minor performance differences at best, but it could cause a problem if a new game that your trying to install asks for a large contiguous block of HD space.
One thing to do is to back-up your HD, and format the HD and then restore your backed up data to see if that will help.
The other solution is to spend $100 bucks or so and get a 200+GB 2.5" SATA hd and install that. I've had a 160GB and haven't had any problems and don't anticipate any for a few years (I only save games today, I have a 500GB external for storing movies and mp3's).

schnurmac 05-05-08, 11:21 AM I am having this problem with my PS3 and movies.
Have you corrected this issue yet? I had this issue when I first got mine. My set is 1080p. I have all resolutions checked on PS3 but my Onkyo 804 that I had for some reason would not support it. It was supposed to. I now 805 and works great. It might be your AVR.

Both are connected to a sony 810 receiver and a sony 720p projector and both ( the ps3 and the hddvd ) are set at 720p resolution. I don't know if it's a problem with the ps3 connected to the receiver via hdmi or something else. Any help will be really appreciated.

I would recommend going to the BD software forums and choose one of the tier 0's and see how they work out. Encoding quality has been the largest variance in quality from what I've seen.

I purchased a PS3 in December and have been running it ever since through an Onkyo receiver, 1.3-rated HDMI cable, and into a Samsung 1080-p DLP. All has worked great for 3 months, games and movies.
Suddenly, last week, the 1080p signal showed noise with the dashboard in background. I turned it on and got snow and blackouts. When I disable 1080p, all works fine. I've swapped the HDMI cable for 3 others, I've plugged the PS3 into another 1080p TV, always the same: corrupted video signal.
Anyone seen this? Anyone have a fix? I contacted Technical Service and they gave me the equivalent of, "Are you sure the power is on? Are you sure the TV is turned on?" They blamed my cable, my TV, my receiver, everything but the PS3.
I know the TVs work, I know the cables work; any idea why this is happening or why it started suddenly?
Exocet77 05-07-08, 11:58 AM Just wanted to check in for those in the future that have to return their PS3 for warranty repair and don't know how long it'll take.
Filed my claim with Sony same day it broke, April 4th. Sony shipped the box immediately but it took a while to get to me, I had the box filled in one day and sent it back out. Sony got my unit on April 11th. Tomorrow is May 1st and still nothing, so it's going on a solid month here real soon. :(
I'll post up again when I get it back, or when I pick up a new PS4 - whichever comes first.
Received the pre-paid box May 1st, I shipped my second broken one back the same day. Just got my new/refurbed one right now. Total working days from the time I called the support line till the time I got this was 8 working days. About the sametime as the last one I had to send back.
There very quick on my sending/receiving. Its just a matter of getting one that works
I will try this one tonight or tomrrow and see what problems it has.

All I know is my PS3's HDMI port went dead on April 11. It was purchased in Decemberlike yours. They received the broken PS3 on April 17th and I finally received a refurbished one TODAY. Hopefully the damn thing works.
So total turnaround time for me was nearly an entire month. All because of the HDMI port.

Wow... another POS I mean PS3 that has a Jet Engine for a fan... Right out of the box.
Called talked to a supervisor, they wont send me a new unit, just another refurbed or repaired one. I asked if they even check them before shipping replacments out b/c this is bs. He's putting a *sticky* on my work order to the techs to give it special attention and fix it right... or @ least fix it. I'll believe it when I see it. He apologized for having to go through "4" POS in a month and there shipping me out a free game... I happily refused, saying I want a WORKING POS not a game. One thing to try is to replace the thermal paste yourself with a high-end paste they use for PC's. Otherwise I'm not sure you want to send it back to Sony for an unknown time when you can do it yourself in a day.

I could do it myself, by why should i? Its not my job to fix something that I paid for and is under warranty. My initial first one I bought out of store didnt make any noise. I will keep sending them back until they replace it with a silent working one or give me a new one. They will get tired eventually of me ranting to them.

TakeYourMoney 05-12-08, 09:45 AM Hi everyone,
I have an issue with my PS3 that i feel almost embarrassed to ask about but I've spent the whole weekend trying to figure it out and have not been able too, maybe some one can help me out.
So i bought a new PS3 this past friday and everything works great (i absolutely love how dead silent it is in comparison to my 360). I had one of my friends come over to play some COD4. He signed into his account for the Playstation network so that we could play online and eveything worked great. The next day i wanted to go and try out the marketplace to download some demos. I go to the marketplace and it prompts me to sign-in to my account, which i have not created yet since we used my friends account the previous day. Now, however, i am totaly puzzled on how to create my own account.
I looked EVERYWHERE on the dashboard and the website, and it says that there should be an option to create new account in the Friends tab in the XMB, but the option does not come up. The only thing that is there is for sent and received messages. When i try to sign-in it displays my friends email address and prompts me for his password, but no where does it give me an option to create a new account.
I feel like a dummy but i can not figure this out for the life of me. I speculate that since i signed into the Playstation network once with my friends account the system thinks that I've already made an account and does not give me an option to make a new one. I tried reseting the system to default settings but it still displays my friends email and prompts for his password.
I don't know what to do besides calling Sony. I will be super greatfull if anyone can shed some light on this issue.
Thanks,
Eugene

Did you sign in as him? If so I think you can only have one account per user.
Create a user for yourself and your friend in PS3 settings. So you can have two accounts on the PS3 network. But with two accounts game saves are different for each. But doesnt matter for online play.

yeah i tried making a different user, that didn't seem to work. it didn't give me an option to create a new PSN account and when i went to sign-in to the marketplace it still came up with his email and prompted for his password.

Anyone have this issue - unit is hooked into Yamaha receiver with HDMI input (audio & video). For first month or so - everything was fine. However, over the last several days - when I switch to PS3 input screen is blank. I was able to get it to engage - but it seemed to be at "ground zero" - system says it recognized an HDMI cable and then I had to go through the setup options to get it back up and running. This is annoying - any suggestions/comments/fixes?
Thanks

It is an SR605.
As stated, it ran for 3 months no problem, then one day, it hated 1080p. Everything else works fine (all other resolutions) and the receiver is passing 1080p from my DVR to my TV without issue.

Okay, If I'm posting in the wrong forum for this then I apologize.
A long time ago (2 years or so) I got setup with my xbox 360. I purchased a Linksys router, hooked up my 360, computer, and modem and everything was great. A year later I added a PS3, and after a tech support call to Linksys to help me enable NAT 2, everything was peachy there too. PS3, 360, and PC all connected to the router and the internet.
Anyway, two nights ago I was trying to play my weekly MLB the Show matchup with my buddy in Chicago and it wouldn't let us connect. I did a connection test on the PS3 and for some reason I was back to NAT 3 again after all this time. I tried to change settings and nothing worked. I called Linksys, after changing a TON of settings changes I was told to powercycle and restart everything. After I did that...could not connect to my internet with either the PS3 OR my computer. I couldn't even access my linksys setup page anymore.
Finally I just said screw it, and I completely removed the router from the equation. I plugged my ps3 directly into the modem, powercycled, tested my settings and I got a connectioni with a NAT 1 setting. That is fine. I played a couple things with my friend. After that, I unplugged the ps3, plugged in my PC (to the modem) but now my freaking PC won't connect to the internet! PS3 connection is solid no matter many times I plug/unplug the ethernet cable from the modem. The ps3 immediately connects and I'm off and running.
However, I spent 2 hours trying to get the PC online and it just won't do it.
I decided that tonight I'm going to call AT&T tech to help me get the PC online.
Assuming they can help me, I will be fine just manually swapping out the cables whenever I want to play PS3 online. However, I was wondering if I might just get an ethernet switcher. I'm unfamiliar with switchers. Does an ethernet switcher work just like a the Component Cable switcher I'm using in my entertainment center? If so, why does anyone use a router if a switcher can do the same job without all of the hassle of dealing with router settings?
Sorry to ramble on, but hopefully someone can help me and/or advise me. I may run over to Circuit City today to pick up a switcher if you guys think that will work for me. Like I said, I have no problem manually switching out the ethernet connections each time I play ps3, but if a switcher will easily do that job for me then I'm going to pick one up today.
Also, anyone have any idea why my PC won't allow me to go online when it's connected directly to my modem? Makes no sense to my why the PC wouldn't work, but the PS3 would work just fine.
Thanks again.
1. Your router is either corrupt or dead. Do a total hardware reset to factory settings (should be instructions online, or give us your model number) and start from scratch.
2. You mentioned AT&T, but is it DSL or cable? If it's the former, the reason your PC won't connect is because you need to "dial up" with your username and password. If it's the latter, most cableco's will pair your modem with the MAC address (hardware ID of the network card, for brevity's sake) of the first device that connects to it. You'll need to plug it back into your router, call AT&T, and request a MAC address clearing if that's the case. Just tell them you bought a new wireless router.
3. A switch might work, but it's not the best idea. Go with a router.

I have DSL. The router I was attempting to use was a Linksys BEFSR41 wired. However, I'm about done messing with that stupid thing because the people at linksys still never could help me get it set to a NAT 2 connection.
I have no problem just using my at&t modem, and manually swapping out the ethernet cords and powercycling when I switch back and forth between the PS3 and my PC.

That just sounds like far too much nuisance compared to purchasing a decent router (Linksys WRT54GL, and load some third-party firmware like Tomato for rock-stable goodness) and running everything at once.
But if you're willing to handle the swapping of cords, I suppose it's a solution that works.
phlash420 05-15-08, 01:36 PM Yeah, it would be kind of a nuisance, however It's kind of moot because at this point I can't get my PC online period. When I hook up my ps3 to my modem it fires right up. When I connect my PC to the router I cannot get an internet connection.
So you recommend getting the new wired router you mentioned, and then downloading 3rd party firmware? Can linksys tech still help me if I have 3rd party firmware downloaded? As you can tell I'm not quite an expert with all of this stuff. Should I try reseting my current BFSR41 to default settings, then upgrading the firmware before going out and purchasing a new router?

The new router I suggested is a wireless/wired combination router. (You can turn off the wireless if you don't need it.)
No, Linksys can't help you if you have 3rd-party firmware - that said, I'd leave it at "Linksys can't help you" full stop, because their technical support team could be outsmarted by things in my crisper drawer.
Try resetting your BEFSR41 to complete defaults first (using the pinhole reset button at the back, holding it for ~10-15 seconds should do it) before spending any money though.
phlash420 05-15-08, 02:39 PM Thanks again for the help. I'm going home shortly and I will try resetting my BEFSR41 before I do anything else.
The only thing that worries me about using 3rd party firmware is that if I can't get it all setup on my own I'm going to have some problems. I can check AVS here at work and get advice, but I can't access the internet from home right now.
Linksys has helped me in the past, but they really screwed me up this time it appears.
Well it looks like the fourth time is the charm for us. We received our replacement PS3 about 10 days ago. We had disputed the charge with our credit card company. A few days after receiving the unit Sony called to see if we were happy. The unit had ben set up for a day and I was at work. They wanted me to make a long distance call to let them know. I received a packet of paperwork from Chase yesterday which included inter-office memos from Sony. The bottom line was sony never mentioned if the customer was taken care of, they stated they think I was just trying to get a PS 3 without paying for it. I logged 40 miles back and forth to ups because they only send adult signature required. I was in the audio biz for 25 years and always held sony in pretty high regard not for their products(just purchased a Marantz receiver and never considred a Sony) but for their support. I sent a pretty scathing e-mail to Sony yesterday figuring we will never hear back. Also the third csr said they would sned a free movie and t shirt for our trouble which we never received. Anyway just a rant to give hope to those going through multiple exchanges.
Thanks for the forum,
Zaxdad
Thanks again for the help. I'm going home shortly and I will try resetting my BEFSR41 before I do anything else.
That should resolve it. If not, you could check the Linksys site for the latest firmware for the router and flash/reflash it. Something could just have gotten corrupted.

You could always take the router temporarily out of the loop to ask questions if it's that bad. The stock firmware on the WRT54G series isn't terrible ... but it's a far cry from the robustness of the third-party offerings.
Linksys has helped me in the past, but they really screwed me up this time it appears.
Virtually guaranteed with phone-based troubleshooting I'm afraid.
nceaglesfn 05-15-08, 06:15 PM I was at a buddy's place and he had the same problem.

I was having the same exact problem with my setup but only playing regular DVDs and had the 24fps set to automatic. I set it to off and the same DVDs played fine. I just need to remember to put it back to auto for BD.
Thanks for the info , I had been looking all over several other forums and nothing.
Exocet77 05-16-08, 12:04 AM I would say lucky you, that you got a working one. I hope my fourth one is mint as well
Well it looks like the fourth time is the charm for us.
Thanks for the forum,
Zaxdad
schnurmac 05-19-08, 11:44 AM I'm an idiot, i figured my problem out. i just needed to make a new user and it let me sign-up for the PSN with no problem. thanks schnurmac!
No prob. That is what I was trying to tell you to do. You can set up different users on the PS3 like yourself and friends and family. I dont think you can have more than one PSN user names per PS3 (console) users.
bearboy1978 05-20-08, 10:38 AM I am not sure if anyone else has come across this. I will list my setup first:
Playstation 3 - 60GB
Onkyo 705 (PS3 connected via HDMI)
Samsung 52 Inch (A750)
Tivo HD (connect via HDMI to Onkyo)
Apple TV (connect via HDMI to Onkyo)
When viewing the menu screen (dashboard) on the PS3, the background image has small little gray/white dots flashinging (very noticeable when the background is black - looks like an old analog set)
It has been working fine before - connected directly to the receiver...so I don't think the receiver is the problem.
It only does this on the menu screen. When playing games, or watching BD movies, you cannot see those flashing dots.
All other equipment functions normally.
daddyjer 05-22-08, 04:34 PM i have a question. My onkyo recievers displays COD4 as 7.1 mch however i'm not getting any sound out of the back surround channels. The weird thing is the game is only 5.1 DD. If my reciever was receiving a 5.1 signal i could then matrix this signal by dolby PLIIx. I want cod4 in 7.1. the onkyo forum said it was some sort of bug with the PS3 and for me to turn off the 7.1 on the ps3 so i could then matrix the 5.1 signal. it doesn't make sense to me that i would need to turn off the 7.1 on the ps3 because it should be sending a 5.1 signal. the onkyo forum compared it to when you play a cd and the receiver will indicate 7.1mch when it should actually be 2.0pcm. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Tr turning off 1080p under the "display" settings, that should solve the problem, only now you cannot watch 1080p material.
Mine suddenly started doing the same thing: worked great for 3 months, then no 1080p. I too have an Onkyo receiver, but I tried the PS3 on another 1080p television and it did it there too.
I bet your TV is LCD, right? If it were DLP, the noise would be almost all you see.
My PS3 impressed me initially; now, not so much. Also, try contacting Sony help, they will tell you the problem is the TV, or receiver, or you need the current update, or you are a moron and cannot operate simple electronics - anything but something may be wrong with the PS3.
Yea, my 360 HD DVD drive doesn't work perfectly, but it is hell'a reliable compared to this thing.
Someone needs to start a class-action suit against Sony, their hardware sucks.
splinters 05-26-08, 12:07 PM I could do it myself, by why should i? Its not my job to fix something that I paid for and is under warranty. My initial first one I bought out of store didnt make any noise. I will keep sending them back until they replace it with a silent working one or give me a new one. They will get tired eventually of me ranting to them.
hehe, whatever works for you. Here's my thought:
1) keep on sending your ps3 back to Sony for 2-6 weeks at a time multiple times (let's say 4 weeks avg and 5 times sent to get it repaired properly = 20 weeks of no ps3 time) + shipping costs and time talking to sony support.
or
2) buy some thermal paste, spend a few hours one day and have a ps3 for 20 weeks -1 day + cost of thermal paste.
It may not be your job, but how much is your time worth? 20+ weeks worth. That's all I'm saying.

Or after sending it back 4 times only to get another loud refurbished one and a free game. Take the loud one to walmart for an exchange (avg turn around time, 1 day). Voila, a quiet new PS3 again. At least wal-mart got it right by getting me a quiet one ;)
BTW the turn around time was surprisingly great. I sent my last PS3 in on a Tuesday after the holiday and received it on the Friday the same week. Turn around time 3-4 days. The problem is getting a good one.
problem via toslink to denon avr 5600 dts.
It seems that my denon does not like the toslink connection from the ps3. While playing GTA 4 the denon will reset itself (ie turn off and then back on), at which point I have to go back into the denon on screen menu to reassign the digital 1, 2, and 3 inputs as well as the digital coax. I went into the sony settings and made sure to check dd 5.1 as well as DTS (there are two other sound streams checked that I cannot de-select). Went into the BR playback menu and selected bitstream and not pcm.
To make sure the toslink cable is not faulty I returned the one I first had and bought a new one only to have the Denon turn off and then turn back on again multiple times while playing gta4. It doesn't seem to do this with dvd movies but I have not watched a whole movie all of the way through because I don't have an HDMI input on the Barco 808s and cannot scale the dvd to an acceptable picture rez (black scan lines suck) I see an HD Fury in my future *which is a whole nother ball of wax question wise*.
Then to make sure it was not a faulty toslink input in the Denon I hooked up the cable box via the same toslink cable and that worked perfectly. 5.1 sound and no on/off resets on the Denon.
I am at a loss at to what to do to fix this issue. I will tell you the last Playstion I had was the origianl way back when. The wife go the PS3 for my B-day so we could watch BlueRay movies but I figured I would get a few games.
Sorry if there is a fix already posted for this issue and than you for your time and help.

Guys, I can´t conect to my wireless network with my PS3 anymore.
After 3 weeks of regular use, the console can´t find the network and it shows and error code (80130128) not referred in any Sony manual.
I´ve tried to change the PS3 IP, filter by MAC adress, re-start the router and the ADSL modem, update the router firmware (D-LINK 524), re-install the 2.35 firmware, input the IP manually in PS3.......but nothing worked.
The WAN light in PS3 is not blinking when the console is searching for the network, and i´ve not seen any solution in my web reserach.
I have a XBOX360 and a Wii sharing this connection perfectly, and I really don´t know what to do.
Tks in advance for your help
waitsone 05-27-08, 11:31 AM Ok I need some insight on a problem my older brother is having on his PS3. His PS3 games and DVD's play fine on his 40gb PS3 but everytime he tries to play a Blu-Ray movie the menu for the blu-ray movie starts to come up on the screen after he's inserted the disk and press start movie on his PS3, he gets a error message on his TV saying (does not support this) or something like that. He said a month ago his Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray worked fine, but now that or know Blu-Rays work they all do this same thing? Has anyone seen this before. Its like the PS3 recognizes the BD disk and starts to play it but right before the movie comes on he gets that error message. He has a 1080P Samsung DLP, last years model, and his PS3 he has 1080P,1080i,720P,480P all turned on under display settings, and all his other PS3 settings are correct. He's running this through a HDMI connection to his TV, but I did notice that he also had regular AV cable connected also, I disconnected that from the PS3 but not the TV, but still the same results. He has 3 HDMI ports on the TV, does he need to plug into a certain one to work. I thought the BD drive went out in his PS3 but I'm starting to think maybe he just hooked up something wrong, cause don't Blu-Ray movies have that copy protection stuff and can only be ran through a HDMI cord. Has anyone heard or seen anything like this.

Sounds like your wireless card either got disconnected from the ps3 or the wi-fi chip went *poof*. If your hardware savy, you can pull the ps3 apart and see if re-seating the wi-fi connector/card will help. You can also check to see if the antenna connection popped out, but I doubt that since the wireless light never comes on. Otherwise I would just call Sony support and get them to fix it. I doubt there is much we can do since this sounds like a hardware problem more than software or configuration.

Sounds like a display settings configuration problem. I would go into the BD menu under settings and turn the 24fps configuration to off. That will have the ps3 display in 60fps(Hz) which is probably what the tv requires. If that doesn't work, it might be useful to list off the BD configuration menu selections are and see if we can help there.

U should have your router set for DHCP server, and then reserve an IP for the PS3. Is your SSID still being broacast from the router, turn it on, when the PS3 detects it and access is granted you can turn it back off, did your keys change, check your ACL (access control list) in the router, make sure you have the correct MAC (the one for your wireless card, which will be different from the NIC on the PS3 for wired) address from the PS3 in the router.

Any idea?

Same here.... I see the folders, but no media so it is being shared (carefully checked WMP 11). I've found the whole thing to be a headache, personally and just installed a bigger hard drive - transfer files by the sneaker method. Also, move of my movies are MP4 made with Nero Recode using "cinema" settings for whatever that is worth.
splinters 05-30-08, 04:04 PM WMP 11 is the most likely culprit. Try using TVersity, there's a thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=879850&highlight=tversity) dedicated about how to work with it.

You have to stop ipsec under services and change startup to manual. I had the same problem with both wmp11 and tversity and this solved the problem.
This is covered in help for wmp11. For some reason both Vista and Xp thought I was on a domain instead of a home network so ipsec was started.
WMP11 seems to be easier to understand from the PS3 than Tversity, it's just me I guess.

I just got a new TV, a Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U 1080p 46". I'm trying to connect my PS3 via HDMI to it. When it loads up, the TV shows that it is a 1080i signal. I go to my PS3 settings, go to display options, and when I go to output, all the boxes except 1080p are checked. When I check 1080p, and I hit square to test the screen or X to advance screens, it switches to 1080p and for a second I can see the PS3 screen with the message asking if I want to keep those settings, but the image is very blurry and grainy and progressively gets worse and then just blacks out. This all takes about 4 seconds. Then it stays out for about 2 seconds, then the grainy image comes back and this just repeats itself until the 30 seconds are up and it reverts to 1080i (which looks fine).
So my question is, do you guys think it's a problem with the PS3 or the TV? I'm leaning towards TV...does anyone else have this setup? Am I doing something wrong? I bought the TV straight from Sharp as a refurb so I need to know ASAP if I need to return it!
Any and all help is appreciated!

If it's a refurb, bring it back immediately. I have a Sharp LC-60C52U (Costco's 52" Sharp LCD) and I had no problems setting it up exactly as how you mentioned.
If you have another 1080p HDMI source you can try that out, otherwise return it and try again.

Sounds like your TV has a "dynamic contrast" (every manufacturer has it's own name for it) feature enabled. I would recommend going into your tv's menu to look for where you would switch contrast, brightness, etc. Disable any dynamic contrast feature you see. I would recommend getting AVIA or some other tv calibration disc and calibrate the tv so the right balance of colors is shown optimally.
You might also want to check the display forums for your specific tv model/family to see what others are doing for calibration or any other tricks they can offer.

Villanman 06-03-08, 04:20 PM I've had my PS3 1.5 years now and I have had an issue that just developed this week.
I go to use my PS3 and I find that it is already blinking red.
Touching power on the console brings it back to a solid red, Pushing power again and it fires up and operates fine.
I shut it down it goes to solid red like it has since day 1.
Few days later I come back to use it and it is blinking red again.
Push power makes it solid push again it fires up fine.
I don't get it
If blinking red means it gets too hot, how can the machine get too hot when it isn't even on?

peter_j_wilhelm 06-08-08, 02:50 AM Despite the fact that this problem seems to show up on only one game (and also I have a messed up XMB), I've concluded that I have a hardware problem. The game works fine on a different machine but the identical model. Grrrr. $149 out-of-warranty repair.
For what it's worth, if you're still having the problem, I also am having the same experience (was just finding this thread when googling for the spikey headed/bodied characters in Lost Via Domus). I also have never seen that problem before in any other game but it's all over the place in Lost. Anyway, just in case it's at all related, I also have the hardware problem that causes Grand Theft Auto 4 to lock up. (In case you didn't know, there were multiple problems with GTA4, most fixable, but for some of us there is a hardware problem which Sony is fixing by replacing our PS3's, even if out of warranty.) Anyway, I am just about to send my unit back for that GTA4 fix and am hoping it fixes the Lost problem at the same time. If you haven't tried it already, I would suggest seeing if you can get more than 5 or 10 minutes into GTA4 before it crashes your PS3. If not, maybe it's related after all. Call Rockstar Games and Sony to get them to get you a fixed unit. If it doesn't lock up, well, I guess spikes in character heads aren't the worst. ;)
bmxking45 06-08-08, 05:41 PM Allright guys I have a recurring issue with my PS3 that is getting rather frustrating. Whenever I am in the main menu portion of the PS3 the screen is constantly flashing (image/black sceen/image/black screen etc...) It does this flashing thing when I am watching movies and using the menu on the PS3 but does not flash when i am playing any games. I have a samsung LNT4661F 1080P LCD TV and the PS3 is hooked up via HDMI. I also just tried restoring the system settings and I am still having the flashing problem. The system has only just started doing this for no apparent reason. Prior to this the unit worked fine for the last 5mos since I owned it. Any and all help is appreciated!!
Set the ouput res on the XMB to 720p or 1080i instead of 1080p and see if that fixes it. If so you've got a fault in the video output/video input of your setup.
The reson why it doesn't flash during games is presumeably because the game is forcing a lower res.
You'll wan't/need another 1080p output device and a different HDMI cable to narrow down the problem to either the PS3, your TV, or your HDMI cable.
bmxking45 06-08-08, 09:27 PM So today I moved the PS3 HDMI plug from port 2 to port 1 on the television and it seems that this has fixed the issue. No more flashing or so it appears as of yet. As for the game being displayed in a lower res that is not the case since it was COD4 which is a 1080P game. So why it was not flashing when I was gaming is still a mystery to me.

Well those are two issues. I would say that you should probably try TVersity instead of WMP11 for issue #1.
For issue #2 sounds like a wireless problem, can you try a wired connection to see if a more solid connection will help. You can also try moving your ps3 +/- 6 inches or rotate it to see if you can get a better wireless connection. If you can't improve it I would recommend an ethernet bridge or gaming adapter to see if that will get you better wireless performance.

Degenerazn 06-13-08, 03:58 AM I am a proud new owner of a 80gig PS3 and I have a couple questions. First off, I have the PS3 hooked up to my Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver, should I set the PS3 to Bitsream or PCM? Which would sound better and which would display Multichannel vs Dolby Digitial. And second, I have an older Pioneer PRO-73HD projection TV that has up to 1080i. I tried playing Haze demo and it seemed to downgrade the picture to 480i/p. I have the PS3 set to 1080i, should I set it to 720p so games that are native to 720p wont downgrade? Thanks
I did see a few posts on heat issues a few pages back, but I think I may have a slightly different issue.
I just picked up an 80gb PS3 in the MGS4 bundle, and my console shuts off from heat after playing MGS4 for about 1 - 1.5 hrs (it turns off and has a flashing red light). I can turn it on immediately after, but then it shuts off again in 10 minutes or so.
The console doesn't shut down if I have a fan sitting in front of it and blowing on it. I've placed it vertically on a stand besides my entertainment center, so it has lots of space around and above it. I don't have A/C, but my room temperature was only 78-80F.
After this happened, I tried leaving it on overnight to download demos -- it didn't shutdown at all over night. I also played some less intensive games for an hour (like pixeljunk monsters), and it did not overheat.
Is this normal? I assume since it's in the troubleshooting section, overheating isn't such an odd occurrence, but it seems like such a hack to have to put a fan in front of the system to play MGS4.
Leadsalad 06-13-08, 01:20 PM Just got the 80gb MGS4 bundle as well and I have an interesting problem regarding audio playback.
PS3 is connected to a Denon 2308 AVR via HDMI passing audio and video. It's outputting Linear PCM to the receiver so the receiver shows 7.1 multi channel input while in the main PS3 menu and in games and I get full sound.
However when I put in the Blu-Ray demo disc the PS3 switches to DD 2 channel and I get no sound from my receiver. I additionally tried a DVD (Matrix Reloaded) and got sound only when the disc was sourcing 5.1. The DVD title menu had no sound while the movie played fine.
I'm somewhat stumped. I'll go home tonight and try direct sourcing the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV to see if that changes anything. But I haven't had any problems with my receiver and my Xbox and regular cable.

splinters 06-13-08, 09:01 PM I did see a few posts on heat issues a few pages back, but I think I may have a slightly different issue.
Heat issues like that are not normal. Go back and exchange for a new one.

splinters 06-13-08, 09:03 PM I am a proud new owner of a 80gig PS3 and I have a couple questions. Thanks
Check the PS3 FAQ in the blu-ray player forum for details, but the short answer is lossless audio, select PCM as the PS3 can't bitstream lossless codecs to the 605. If your really fanatical, you can switch to bitstream for non-lossless codecs.

Yes, you can use optical. I believe it's 2 channel on the optical not 5.1. You can bitstream audio but I can't remember off the top of my head what's the max bandwidth it can support. Check the PS3 FAQ for details.
As for programming, check the Harmony thread in the remote control section, I'm sure they know exactly what codes to input.

bonham2 06-13-08, 09:32 PM So, I was watching a blu-ray earlier tonight, and all of a sudden, the picture freezes. My remote stopped working as did any buttons on the PS3. I turned it off from the back and unplugged it to see if that helped, but nothing. Since it has been turned off, it won't even turn it back on. I get power but no picture or audio.
Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to fix this, or is it dead? I bought it used from GameStop a little over 2 months ago, so I don't even know what kind of warranty I have, if any. Any help would be appreciated.
splinters 06-14-08, 03:04 AM Well you can try a factory reset: switch the back power on and then hold the front power button till you hear multiple beeps. Next power up it will be reset.
Either way I would return this back to Gamestop and ask for another one. Bring a receipt. If that fails, check and see if your credit card has an extended warranty you can use. Do it quickly since I think the ps3 has a 30 day standard warranty.

Dingaling2004 06-14-08, 08:16 AM Hello all,
Hope that someone out there can help. I have a 40Gb PS3 that has worked flawlessly since new year. However, I tried playing Fight Night yesterday and loaded a new player and then the system just crashed and it said 'please wait' on the screen. This lasted 2 hours before I decided to turn the system off. After restarting, I thought it may be a good idea to format the hard drive. It went through all of the usual 'you will lose all your game saves etc' screens and then went through to a black screen with the PS logo. Then, a screen appeared telling me to plug in my controller via USB cable and press the PS button, but no response. I have tried plugging in both controllers...no change. I can't get any further. The system is locked at that point. I have tried a hard reset but without any luck. Anyone have a similar circumstance and workaround? I have tried other BD games and movies but the drive is not registering them on the screen. Very strange!
Thanks heaps
Greg.

I'm hooking up the PS3 to my onkyo 605 thru HDMI, is PCM the best, for gaming and Blu Ray? Can I have it show dolby digital 5.1 or DTS Master on my receiver like it does w/ my Xbox 360 thru optical?
Is the Bluetooth connectivity picky? I've got two bluetooth headsets that won't pair up w/ the PS3, it just stays "scanning".
I bring my PS3 to different rooms. I brought it into my bedroom where my TV doesn't have HDMI, and used Component A/V, I didn't get any picture or sound. Is the PS3 set to only send signal thru HDMI? Can I have it send to whatever's hooked up?

Just call up Sony (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3/HowToObtainService) and tell them about your problem. When I called, they estimated a 7-10 business day turnaround time. You'll need some proof of purchase to give them though.

I did it through their automated system on the web. I'm supposed to get an e-mail in the next day or so about how to send it back. I got it from Amazon so proof of purchase is not a problem.

PS3 to Onkyo 605, PCM is best for the lossless codecs (DTS-HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD), bitstream is preferred by many for the non-lossless (DTS-core and lower, DD+, etc).
Bluetooth should be 2.0 or newer ideally. So if these are older headsets, you should look for a newer one. I didn't have a problem pairing 3 different headsets so far though.
As for bringing to the ps3 to different rooms, just change the video output from hdmi to component and that should work fine, just make sure you change the video out before you switch locations. The other option is to hold down the power button when you plug it into a new source and let the ps3 reset to factory settings and auto-detect the video settings.

'Houston, we have a problem...'
I think my 40gbPS3's Bluray drive just took a crap. I've noticed my system randomly locking up every now and then but MGS4 might have been the last straw for it. I heard a loud click when it was loading once on Friday and ever since then, anytime the game goes into the BD for data or I switch weapons/items in the menus and it reads the data off the BD BAM! locks up the whole system. It just gets worse every time too and Sunday after I beat Laughing Octopus and proceeded with the game, it would lock up all over the place :(
One time it locked up on a cutscene and an alternating icon appeared at the top left. It was a disk spinning icon and then a big X. That's when I realized 'uh oh...'
Anyone experience this? I think I have to call Sony. Going to see tonight if that happens with other games or Bluray movies. Good thing my HD-A2 is my primary upscaling DVD player!
migs_inc 06-16-08, 11:28 PM For the past week or so, DVDs played on my PS3 only scale up (or just scale) to 480p. Formerly, DVDs would always scale to 1080p. I checked the PS3 settings, and they are all basically set to "auto."
Satellite TV always upscales to 1080p (my Denon AVR 4308 upscales, and it too is set to "auto" for resolution), so this seems only a problem with regular DVDs.
Can anyone think of why this might happen and how to return DVD scaling on PS3 to 1080p?

Sounds like your display settings doesn't have 720p and 1080p checked on your ps3. Or your Denon did the upscaling. Who's doing what in the combo of your ps3, denon avr, and display?
On your bd/dvd settings, the upscaling should be set for "normal". Otherwise not sure what's wrong without more details.

ugabuga 06-17-08, 04:06 PM Just got a 40 gig PS3 and been playing around with the media center capabilities.
Some questions guys:
I downloaded a 720p .mkv file. Tried Tversity, Twonky, Nero MediaHome, and all same results the video stutters. At first I thought this was due to my wireless network, but i am getting 90+ connection. I thought with the newest firmware the PS3 can play .mkv files so to test i copied it to the hd and it played fine. Checking on the net, it seems most people convert to .vob. So I converted the file and it streamed fine over my wireless network, no issues whatsoever.
Any definitive answers would be helpful...
Pazazuzu 06-17-08, 06:24 PM Hi guys,
I recently have run into an issue with my PS3 while running games on our 46" LCD Sharp Aquos. We have had the PS3 (60gb version) for about a year and have used it for games and movies (including blu-ray) with absolutely no problems. As a matter of fact, movies (blu-ray or otherwise) still work perfectly and watching tv (HD or not) still looks great also.
But when it comes to playing games, that is another story. When we load PS3 games on the console, we get large black squares that are spread throughout the screen while in the game. This issue is repeated on newer and older games, even ones that I have just purchased, so I know it can't be an issue with the games but with the tv or the console.
The black squares flicker on and off and jump around the screen, 4" x 4" in size. We do not have any issues of this occuring ever during movie or tv watching, only when gaming. And this has never happened in the past.
The PS3 has also been updated successfully to the lastest firmware, as has the television.
Any ideas what could be the issue here? (I do have the PS3 running on HDMI through my receiver then to my tv)
Any help would be greatly appreciated :o)
splinters 06-18-08, 01:15 AM have you tried plugging in your ps3 video directly to the tv and see what happens?
One problem could be the HDMI cable, but chances are there is something odd the ps3 is doing. One other thing to try out is selecting different video settings and see if that helps out on the games. Do the demo's show the same problem?

Spoke with Sony support last night, my 40gb has to go in for repair. The drive is completely dead. They are sending me a box so I'm happy it's getting fixed for free. Just stinks because in 2 weeks I got Uncharted and MGS4 and now have to wait a few weeks to get back into them. It is what it is... I'm starting to believe the 40gb iffy cheaper Blu drives rumor
I have to say, Sony support isn't great. The rep I got was a thick accented hispanic who cocked attitude. I took it as is but the highlight of the call had to be when he demanded a receipt to prove that the system was within 1yr warranty otherwise I pay $149 for repair, and I told him I had to find the receipt but the 40gb model has only be available for some 9 months and last I checked, 9 months is LESS THAN 1 year. Only thing he needed from the receipt was purchase date and serial number which both can be had without the receipt (serial on back of PS3, purchase date on bank statement lol) I hope my system gets fixed super fast though... I'm having MGS4 withdrawl :D

I've had this happen to me on my first ps3. I paused the movie for like 10 minutes and pressed play and bam. You shouldn't have turned it off from the back, I did that and the blu-ray drive gave out on me. It didnt read games or discs, I just called sony and they replaced it. I'm on my second set and its fine so far, in fact I was watching Black Hawk Down today and the Picture froze while the audio was still playing. So I didn't turn it off from the back, I just held the power button in the front of the console and restarted. it worked just fine.
when you leave a Blu-Ray disc or Playstation 2 game disc in the system and are in the XMB (like viewing photos) does the drive in the PS3 keep the disc spinning?
I basically just want to know for long term use if I shouldn't leave a game disc in the system.

I would recommend taking the disk out, if you are not playing it and leaving it on (to be on the safe side). It is hard to tell if it is spinning due to the fans. I know this is a BD player, but on most PC and regular DVDs, you can tell the spinning stops.
Could someone please help me access the on-screen keyboard using a game controller? I can't find how to access it in the manual. Page 32 of the manual discusses how to use it, but provides no clue how to access it. I don't see it as an option on the GUI. I'm trying to logon to the PS3 Network.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: Okay, when accessing the PS3 web browser, I can access the on-screen keyboard by pressing the start button. However, when I go to the Playstation Network logon screen, which asks me to sign in, I cannot access the on-screen keyboard by pressing the start button. Do I need to purchase a PS3 keyboard to logon to Playstation Network?
splinters 06-22-08, 11:58 PM You don't need a ps3 keyboard, just click "x" on any line where you want to enter text and it will automatically bring up the controller keyboard.

Mine on friday night was watching Golden Compass BR and it froze. I couldnt do anything. My son fell asleep by then. I took it out and played RB62. Played ok but when online match is over and goes back to lobby it would freeze before going into lobby. I could hear everyone talking but I was stuck. Then Saturday tried to play, same thing.
Then it got to the point the game would show up as a blue disk icon like movies do. There was no preveiw of game. Called Sony had me do a preferences reset. Same thing tells me I need to send in. They ask me if I have receite yes only 6 months old. They ask me if I have modified it, no. But I put in a larger HDD 250gb. She tells me its not approved by them its not original may void warranty. I tell her its right in the manual how to do it and says nothing about voiding the warranty. Its a owner replacable part. She ask if I still have the HDD I do. She told me to put it back in before I send it in. Of course Im not dumb. I told her you wont get my HDD. My thing is why are so many people having issues now. Everything was fine untill I updated to the latest firmware sometime last
week. Has anyone sent theirs in and gotten their original one back? Not some refurbed piece of junk. How long does it take from the day you mail it to get it back? Do they pay the freight both ways?:mad:

Hmm, well I'm assuming you did the obvious in the Settings->Audio Output Settings and selected "Digital Out (Optical)". After selecting that, go through the manual menu and make sure "AAC" is checked off.
Otherwise I'd call Sony Support or ask your retailer for a replacement.

Sounds a little funky. The only time my PS3 wouldn't play a disc was a Cars dvd that had be "handled" by my young kids. I did a quick wipedown on the disc threw it back in and the PS3 played it with no problems. I would suggest checking the media to make sure it is clean (probably is if you just bought some blurays) and then try searching google with the exact error message if it is something that is not generic like disc read error.

It's an odd side-effect at the very least. You might want to invest in a cheap switch as maybe something else on that hub is causing a connection reset since all ports of a hub are broadcasted to all the other ports.

Not sure, one thing to try is to directly connect the ps3 to the router and see if the experience changes. If not, then it isn't related to the linksys switch. If it does, well at least you know what to change.

I did purchase the component cable and also tried the composite cable that came with the unit, both work just fine, picture is normal. My feeling is it must be the HDMI port in the PS3. I called Sony and was able to speak with a rep. He had me do the restart, hold the power button, two beeps, etc., to no avail. He says "There is no reason it should play fine thru the other two connection types, but not the HDMI." This was his way of saying that I'm doing something wrong after eighteen months of using the thing daily! Anyway I still lean towards bad port, but if somebody with more know how can point me to some arcane fix that I'm not thinking of, I'll ask for a coffin and see if they'll send me a refurb unit back.
mmx2000 06-29-08, 12:28 AM Hmm, well I'm assuming you did the obvious in the Settings->Audio Output Settings and selected "Digital Out (Optical)". After selecting that, go through the manual menu and make sure "AAC" is checked off.
Otherwise I'd call Sony Support or ask your retailer for a replacement.

Hmm I worded that poorly.
So my PS3 is hooked up to an Onkyo 605 via digital optical. Digital optical is set as the output in PS3, and I have all audio formats checked on. I get sound from all videos EXCEPT those that are AAC 110 khz from the playstation store (ie: Across the Universe trailer). Other AAC format movies seem to play okay tho... any ideas?
Degenerazn 06-30-08, 12:47 AM ^^ Curious as to why you would hook up your PS3 via optical to your Onkyo 605. Wouldn't you get the best sound with HDMI?
DiscoSmoke 06-30-08, 01:58 AM When I send audio as two channel LPCM over HDMI to my tv(Samsung LN46A650), the subwoofer channel is being thrown away, instead of being mixed down into the stereo LPCM. I verified this with the .1 test signals from DVE, THX DVD's, and the Blu-ray Ratatouille's set up. I use the tv's audio output into a 2.1 system, so I get sub activity from the bass management of the stereo channels, but I'm not getting any of the sub channel from Dolby and DTS encoded material.
Any way to get the mix-down into stereo to include the .1 channel? I thought all DVD players handled their stereo outputs this way.
My PS3 updated over the weekend and I no longer can see my Maxtor Shared Storage II DLNA server for music. Anyone having any success and/or comparable experiences????

I have battled and battled numerous times to get my PS3 set up to properly attach to my wireless router. Sometimes it would connect without a problem, but then it would disconnect without fail (usually within 5 mins). I tried nearly everything...I even bought a wireless gaming adapter to connect to the PS3...still didn't work. So, I rewired my house to have the DSL line coming into the room where the PS3 is and have it hardwired to the modem. Drastic measures, but I've had no problems since then.
Sorry it doesn't help your router situation, but I thought I'd relate my experience before you delve into the endless depths of the PS3's lack of wireless connectivity.

that means you have security turned on & the PS3 needs the code to access the router signal.
Your going to have to dig around in your router software to find your code & type that into your PS3, or you could just turn off the security setting.

Hmm, I would recommend switching over to PCM output on the optical settings and see if that helps. Or vice-versa if it is in PCM today.
Not sure why it doesn't work.
I would also second the other comment that you should use HDMI for audio ideally.

Aristo7905 06-30-08, 08:12 PM Ok, so I got a used Blu-Ray disc into today (JUNO). I was playing COD4 early in the day, no problems. Tonight when i put in JUNO it got about 30 min into the movie and froze, it backed out to the Home screen and gave me an error message "cannot play disc" (i forgot the exact message). I tried a different Blu-Ray, wouldnt even go to the movie screen gave me an error message. I put in COD4, works fine. Im a little confused at what is happening. Any thoughts?
Thank you,

so they couldnt troubleshoot it over the phone, so they are having me send it in for repair. just waiting for the email back and i guess the box to ship it. so i will probably be w/ out my ps3 for 2-3 weeks (my guess). I am also having them check out the heat problem, the system is starting to get hot lately, usually it isnt this bad. I might end up selling my 60gb when it comes back if it continues to get hot, i have no need for Backwards compatability anway.

Yes mine was the 40gb. I put a 250gb in it when I bought it. Wonder why this model having this problem?
TheMoose 06-30-08, 09:56 PM Thanks a million Moose!!! That did the trick my friend...:D
Glad to help, enjoy!
To give everybody an update, the system got worse while it was in my possession -- folding@home now forces my PS3 to shut down without fail in under 2 minutes, fan or not.
Walmart actually would not exchange my system without forcing me to give up the $100 gift card (I'm annoyed with Walmart, but truthfully it's Sony's fault in the first place), so I'll have to roll the dice with Sony support; box is on the way and now the waiting starts.
I just got my PS3 last week and just found out what many of you probably already know -- the box can't properly read MP3 ID3 tags. I eagerly put my large MP3 collection on an external HD and first found out it will only read one directory deep on the drive. My MP3s, like just about everyone else, are arranged artist/album/tracks. Ok, I can deal with that. Then I noticed that the box sorts tracks alphabetically by name and not by the track # contained in the tag. Ok, I could do a batch retagging to put track numbers in the song title -- nope , I aint doing it. I'll keep using my PC and Winamp.
For a device that it is in so many ways advanced and remarkable, I can't count the number of forehead slappers like the above I've encountered so far.
I will say, however, that the photo features are slick and I will probably use it often to view my pics.
If I'm missing something regarding the PS3s inability to read ID3 tags properly, someone please give me guidance.
boobsmcgee 07-02-08, 12:19 AM JohnFR, I think you pretty much have it for the music/mp3 deal. It was fairly obnoxious for me too. I wasn't using an external drive but instead had my library shared to the PS3 through DLNA in WMP11. It was not very easy quickly finding a song in my library (70 or so gigs). I was planning on just making some playlists for parties and whatnot and then just loading those to play through my HT setup. IIRC the PS3 did see my playlists.
Yea, the PS3's MP3 capabilities are fairly basic. I have a HTPC anyway & use Winamp to play my fairly massive collection of music so it's not a big deal. Still, I can't imagine it would be that hard to update the PS3 to read the tags properly and allow you to make playlists on an external HD. I listen to a lot of classical music and album track order is particularly important.
Degenerazn 07-02-08, 05:56 PM Sorry to sound like a noob here but how do you guys backup the data in your HDD? Can you simply connect a external HD and hit copy? And would the external HD have to be formatted a certain way for the PS3 to recognize it? I believe my current one is formatted FAT32, which is unrecognizable by my Xbox360
splinters 07-02-08, 06:12 PM External HD with enough room at using FAT32 is all you need. Here's the menu info: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.html

It's turning on because it thinks that your router sent it the signal to "wake up on Lan"
in other words it turns on and goes to remote play, this happens when you have a psp and want to remote play with your ps3, it turns the unit on. I belive you can go into your ps3 and turn off the wake up on lan option. if you have a psp and want the "wake on lan" option then check with your router, maybe if you make your ps3 IP static it won't be prone to turn on your ps3 randomly.. just a few suggestions.
hope this helps.

This sounds like your display is probably not set it the proper display mode. You want some sort of 1:1 pixel mapping and not have "zoom" or "stretch" modes enabled as those modes are the likely culprit of your problem.

The other is to use component output on your ps3 since 1080i is you max, this shouldn't affect your gaming or BD playback. As always, monoprice.com would a great source for cables.

kingpikey 07-10-08, 08:36 PM Allright, I've been using my PS3 with my Samsung LN-S4095D for months via HDMI (1080p), no problems. I recently brought it over to a friend's house, who has a newer Samsung HDTV, and we used it all day at his house (over HDMI, 1080p).
Just returned home, and the playstation gives me "No Signal" on my 4095D. When I connect through standard RCA cables, everything is fine. I was able to go into the settings and choose HDMI output, and switch over to the HDMI input on the TV, and it worked for a few minutes, then reverted to the "No Signal" message. I've rebooted the TV and the PS3 countless times, and am still unable to use the PS3 on either HDMI input. HDCP issue from the last television I used it with perhaps? Please help?
The weird thing about my problem, is that 1080p works, but has some weird static / artifacts happening on non-moving images (text etc.). You have to get a bit close to the TV to see it, but its VERY noticeable. 1080i works fine. I even brought it to my parents house and hooked it up to their 50" Panasonic plasma... 1080p worked great. 4 HDMI cables (2 monster, 1 phillips, 1 sony "ps3" hdmi cable), didn't make a difference.
Oh, and when starting GT5, the static or "sparks" are REALLY bad... unreal.
I have no idea how to resolve this, and can't seem to find any leads on a solution or even an explanation of the problem.
My PS3 is abou 5 days old now (new 40GB), and is running the 2.41 firmware. Here's another weird thing... this could have completely been in my head, but I swore when I updated to 2.36 the static / "sparks" went away, then returned with 2.41. I wish I could downgrade to test...
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Waboman 07-10-08, 09:27 PM I just turned on my PS3 (60GB) and it completely froze up. On screen was the frozen PS3 "ghost line" (not sure what it's technical name is) it froze before any text was displayed. I had no disc in the player. The PS3 was unresponsive to both my controllers and remote. I finally unplugged it. Now I can't even turn it on. Up until now it's worked flawlessly. Any ideas?
Waboman 07-10-08, 09:36 PM Follow up. I kept it unplugged for a few minutes then tried powering it on with the controllers. No luck. Then I ran my finger over the on/off button on the PS3 itself, and voila! It turned on and seems to be working fine. I wonder what caused it to behave this way in the first place?

Are both HDMI inputs set up identically? I'm not sure if it applies to your particular Samsung, but I've read on ohter forums that if you name the input as "Game", it reduces/eliminates the lag. So check to see if they're both set up the same.

Just curious how you know it's yours you got back. Are going off of the serial number on the case, or did you mark the circuit board inside some way before sending it in?
Posted a while back and never heard anything back. I'm having issues with my Maxtor DLNA server after the last couple updates. Prior to these, everything was fine, I could readily access and play all my MP3's stored on teh device.
After the previous update I could not get the PS3 to see my DLNA server at all. After the most recent update, I can get the PS3 to see the DLNA server if I restart it after the PS3 is running but while it's playing a song I get a "DLNA error 2101" and it stops. I'll also get a "Media Server Error" A network error has occured. (8071053D)"
I know the DLNA server is functioning as I can connect my laptop to the same switch the PS3 is connected to and access the music both as a file and as a shared media device. I also know the network is fine as I'm connected to the switch as I type AND the DirecTV DVR is connected to the same switch. All symptoms point to the PS3 and the recent updates.

Another update. Got a refurbished PS3 back today (made in July 2007), which makes for about two weeks from calling to receiving a replacement, which included the July 4 weekend in the middle.
New PS3 is much, much better with heat (fan stays quiet far longer than my old unit); I can see why some people think the PS3 is quiet while others think it's incredibly loud. Also the fact that Sony is treating the MGS bundle and Motorstorm bundled PS3s identically for service probably means they are in fact the same units (or that I'm getting screwed :p).
I just ordered the 80 GB and will be receiving it in a few days. Also got myself a plasma last week. Question is, I have an older receiver that has optical. Can I run the PS3 optical to my receiver and the PS3 HDMI to my plasma and will it work? When watching movies, I will be using the surround system. When playing games, I will be using just the tv speakers. Thank you.
splinters 07-17-08, 02:12 AM I just got my PS3 today (80GB) and everything was going fine until I tried to update to firmware 2.41. It went through the wi-fi download fine until the end. It said that the system would restart automatically after the update was complete but the screen went blank after the progress bar read 100% and has stayed that way for over 20 minutes. The power light is a solid green and it when I tried to turn it off it just beeped. Is my player ruined, or is another explanation? Any help would be appreciated?
Try the switch in the back of the ps3, you should be able to reset it. If it bricks, call sony and ask them to repair it. Or bring it back to your retailer for another ps3 if it bricks. It's also worth checking to see if the controller is still connected (check if controller 1 light is on).

Optical is fine. HDMI to the plasma is fine. You'll have to manually switch the audio from optical to hdmi and back, but you can do what your asking.

pennhunter 07-17-08, 02:17 AM I'm confused. The Sony remote control has a PS button just like the game controller.
It doesn't do anything. Gotta find that darn controller I guess, because I can't sync another one.

Thanks. I did reset the power switch in the back, and it worked, despite the fact that the manual tells you NOT to do that.
Aristo7905 07-17-08, 09:54 AM so they couldnt troubleshoot it over the phone, so they are having me send it in for repair. just waiting for the email back and i guess the box to ship it. so i will probably be w/ out my ps3 for 2-3 weeks (my guess). I am also having them check out the heat problem, the system is starting to get hot lately, usually it isnt this bad. I might end up selling my 60gb when it comes back if it continues to get hot, i have no need for Backwards compatability anway.

According to the tracking, i should recieve it tomorrow. Its comming from Mexico though, any thoughts on that? Is that where they do all the repairs? I hope i dont get a refurb, i would like mine back. Im curious to see what they repaired (do they list in the box what they fixed?).
Shipping the box to me was slow, but to them and to me shipping is quick.

Thanks Splints. I was hoping I wouldn't have to switch.

theamericanhigh 07-19-08, 06:56 PM thanks everyone in advance - basicaly i have a ps3 and a crappy lcd tv. Im currently looking for a 5.1 surround system to improve sound quality - ive read a little bit about optical audio connections and HDMI connections, but im left with a few questions. How exactly do i connect my ps3 to the surround system? I have my ps3 hooked up to the television with composite cords - but ive heard of people hooking the audio system up to their hdmi output. i'd like to keep my composite cords because i dont feel like dropping 120$ on ultra monster cables. Whats the best solution for me?

theamericanhigh 07-19-08, 07:17 PM theoretically, if i wanted to use HDMI for both audio and video, what would i need to buy?
So far i only have a TV with HDMI input.
Mw182006 07-19-08, 07:45 PM Thanks Grave.

I meant having my PS3, TV and sound system all connected.
splinters 07-20-08, 03:58 AM You need 2 HDMI cables. Connect the ps3 to the receiver (AVR) and then connect the receiver to the tv. All connections are HDMI.

for 2 channel audio from your TV, all you need is 1 HDMI cable connected to the PS3 & television.
here's a problem: my audio file sound quality is shi*t. i've got the ps3 hooked up to an onkyo 605 with HDMI. playing uncompressed PCM tracks straight off the PS3's hard drive (displayed as .cda files) and they sound terrible -- a huge mess of artifacting, high-end fuzz/distortion, etc. very, very bad. the audio files, again, are uncompressed, i have output set to "44.1/88.2/176.2 khz" as opposed to 48khz, and have bitmapping set to "off" (though setting types 1, 2 or 3 doesn't seem to make a difference.) can someone clue me in to what's going on here? it occurred to me that it may be distortion induced by upsampling the audio, but i have trouble imagining the ps3's upsampling could do THIS to the audio. game audio and movie sound quality are great, very clear and obviously not suffering from this problem. the unit is outputting multichannel pcm to the receiver (no sound coming from center and surround channels, predictably). anyone else experiencing something like this? is there something i can change up to remedy this in the settings??
ludivigo 07-21-08, 11:29 AM Check your volume setting. It should be at 0. +1 or +2 will introduce distortion. Search this thread if you need to know where to find it (I think you hit triangle). It's been covered a few times.
