PS3 Controller Disconnecting
I've got a 40GB PS3, the two controllers that came with it and one dualshock. I've been getting controller disconnects every 2 or so hours now while playing Warhawk. A message comes up on the screen saying "please reconnect the controller";
hitting the PS3 button just makes the controller # lights flash, but it fails. Connecting via USB also fails.
It happens with all the controllers (and other games), but I first started noticing it while using the DualShock.
I've got it connected via Wireless, a PS EYE, and a decent Television connected via HDMI.
Do I just have a bad unit? I've restored and reformatted, then restored from backup so i don't think software is the issue. Any tips on how to narrow it down would be greatly appreciated!!!

OK, I think I've found the solution. I've just hit the reset button on all the controllers (I'd never noticed it before), and re-paired them w/the console. Just one day into it, but one of my controllers that quit working completely is now fine!

I spoke too soon. It seemed to work, but now it's just getting worse. I have three controllers; one of them continually makes my character move backwards when I play warhawk! Just running backwards, no apparent stuck controls... and the disconnnecting / crashing is more frequent. Trying to hunt down my receipt...

I am expericencing some static type noise during games. its not my speakers because it dosnt do it during music off the hard drive nor during movies. At first I thought it was just my orange box game that I just bought but I went to go buy grid I found that this game has the prob also. can the static noise damage my speakers? (Just to be clear its happening during gameplay, not talking about when the res is change through hdmi)

I'm also having a strange sound issue with my PS3 during games and movies. It started happening after I recently updated my PS3 ( I usually wait a while before doing the updates). My sound will suddenly get very very quiet so that you can barely hear it, for short stretches of time. Anyone else have this issue?

i was on my buddies ps3 the otherday and noticed that in the video section of the xmb, all his videos are accompanied by a running clip. Much like the games portion of the xmb. on my ps3, the videos are represented by a common video picture. i am fully updated to 2.42.

is there a setting i need to change?

How do you ingame chat w/ a bluetooth headset? I have it connected to my PS3 but how does each game detect it? I tried playing both MGS4 online and Warhawk and both says I doesn't detect the bluetooth.

so they couldnt troubleshoot it over the phone, so they are having me send it in for repair. just waiting for the email back and i guess the box to ship it. so i will probably be w/ out my ps3 for 2-3 weeks (my guess). I am also having them check out the heat problem, the system is starting to get hot lately, usually it isnt this bad. I might end up selling my 60gb when it comes back if it continues to get hot, i have no need for Backwards compatability anway.

It arrived last friday, i hooked it up to my bedroom TV (my entertainment room is being re-done). Everything seems to work fine, although i was disconnected from the PSN and an error message came up, but that has happened before, i wait 5 min and it lets me sign back in. They seem to have shipped me back my PS3, all my information was still on there (pictures, music, settings, demo's). They also updated it w/ the newest software, XMB is nice in game (BUT NO MUSIC TO PLAY DURING GAMEPLAY..i know i know, xbox has a patent or something, these game companies need to send out updates so i can play music)

First off you will need to have your BT headset paired with your ps3. Once that is paired you can use it in either game.

I don't know about MGO, but in Warhawk press L3 (pressing down on the left analog stick) will activate the mic. Once you let go of L3 you are no longer broadcasting.

Why is it so hard to turn off the PS3 from the on/off button on the PS3? It takes me like 20 tries to turn it off. And yes I hold it for 3 seconds.

i usually push it once and then hold it down. with the new update you can turn it off from the XMB.

I originally posted this in the Warhawk but that was a mistake on my part. Anyways.........

I recently started playing Warhawk after a long layoff and stumbled upon this thread. When I played in the past I used to get frequent network drops till I put my PS3 in DMZ and never had an issue again. But now that I've restarted I'm getting frequent drops. Sometimes every 5, 10, or 30 minutes per session. After the error I get signed out of PSN as well with an 8002AD23 error. I've scoured the int3rw3b for a solution and haven't found anything that works. Does anyone else have experience correcting this issue?

I have FIOS and am connecting wirelessly using the Actiontec MI424WR router. I have the latest firmware installed as well. My signal strength is also 100%. I've disabled Media Server on the PS3. I have not tried a wired connection but that's not an option at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated.

It might be dead! It tells you to connect it so it can charge. Press the PS button then look at the bottom left of your tv to see how much charge it has.
The flashing lights means its low and going to loose its connection.

Sounds like your having issues with your router or the wireless connection.

I would recommend finding a long cat 5 cable and test it wired as well. If not that, look up the Linksys PLK200 and see if that might be a good option instead.

One other option is to get a router that is more reliable. Actiontec is not a namebrand I would ever recommend.

Hello all, im a fairly new PS3 owner; well not that new about 8 months. New to the things this nifty machine can do and i am not computer savy whatsoever. Have a few questions i would like to throw at ya hope you can help.

Please be patient with me as i do not know alot of the terms you guys use to describe certain aspects of the system. Correct me at all times, i hope i can help as much as anyone else but it may take a while for me to get to that point.

1st off, how do i find the Official PS3 Owners Thread, my search landed me in here and i dont see a "easy" or more direct way to get there. Ill save any other questions untill i can determine the right place for them, sorry that this post problably doesnt belong here.

Recently trying to share some of my PSN games with a freind that lives not too far from me. I know you have to set up another account, well set up my PSN acct in his system, but i ran into some problems.

Problem i had was that it kept telling me either my password or user name was incorrect, and i know im using the exact same email address and password i set it up initially on my system. I even attempted to retrieve a new password but even my answer is wrong, hell i know spiderman was my hero, thats the only possible answer i could have put in there.

What am i doing wrong. I used my Yahoo email and the actual password for accessing my Yahoo mail, this hasnt changed in over 10 years so im really stumped here. Setting it up at my freinds i did it the same way, am i to use my PSN ID or something? Or can i have it all reset by callin sony?

any advice will be appreciated, thanks in advance

Well I updated to 2.42 in hopes they had fixed the DLNA media server problem created 3 versions ago but they have not. I get constant error 2101. Does anyone know how to maybe go back to previous versions so I can return to an operational DLNA media server? This is really annoying.

Where are your ports for HDMI on your PS3.

I recently bought Nyko's cooling system and it didn't fit because it would block the output ports, so I wouldn't be able to hook it all up.

I returned it to Sears, and they showed me their PS3 and it was in a different location than mine. WHy is this.

For some reason my thread regarding the subject got deleted and I'm not sure why, so I'll ask it here.

Has anyone else lost internet connectivity after updating to v2.42? And are there work-arounds to resolve this? Thanks!

For what it's worth I got the internet issue fixed by manually entering in the IP address. I get a DNS error upon system startup, but at least internet is now working. Automatic no longer works for me with 2.42.

On my 40GB PS3, the HDMI slot is in the same spot as yours. I would guess the HDMI slots are in slightly different locations depending on the PS3 model??

I've got an unusual problem since the latest firmware, and haven't seen any discussion of it. I have an AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-SD9), and I've been able to play HD footage from it in the following ways:
• Insert the SD card from the camcorder into the PS3;
• Burn a DVD in AVCHD format;
• Dump the footage from the SD card to my UPnP server (Twonky on a Synology Cubestation).

Prior to upgrading to the most recent firmware, I've played footage via all three methods. My preferred method is the last as I can just select footage via XMB. But last night, I went to play some footage and everything showed as "Unsupported Data." Has anyone else seen this since upgrading to the new firmware?

I have this same problem. It takes forever to get signed into PSN then it eventually drops out. I run a network test on the PS3 and it passes, but my connection is flakey at best. I'm running FIOS and wireless to my PS3. I think I will take the above suggestion of running some CAT5e that a friend gave me. I have to go buy some terminators and punch them down which is the easy part. The hard part is running the cable.

Hey dudes, I was just wondering, what exactly is deleted when you restore a backup on a PS3? Everything, or just settings? I'm asking because I wasn't sure if it deletes game saves...

Thanks!!:D

I've been so frustrated with PSN lately. I can't ever download a patch/update. Everytime it starts to download, my entire internet f**ks up. I can download for maybe 10 seconds max before the bar stops and the internet, even on my computer, locks up. This NEVER happens with my xbox360. It's just very frustrated that I can't even play my own games cuz I can't download the updates. Anybody have any ideas? FWIW, my PS3 is connected thru a hub which is connected to the router.

When you do a back-up and restore, this is a full system level including settings, game saves, and all downloaded content. It basically mirrors the internal hard drive as I understand it.

What happens if you connect it directly through to the router with no hub in between?

It sounds like a bad ethernet port, but it's hard to say without trying other methods.

Nope, they are fully charged. I put them on the charger I bought every day, and use them fresh. The indicators show fully charged... but thanks anyways.

FWIW, my HDMI output cut out yesterday midway through a COD4 game. Nearly had a heart atttack as mine is an imported PS3 so no warranty, and Sony NZ won't repair them.

Ejected this disc, and held down the power button for 10 secs until it shut off. Waited a minute, powered it backup and phew it worked.

Anyone know if this is a sign my PS3 is on it's way out? Or just a one time glitch?

I just moved into my apartment, one of those student apartments with paid bills and free high-speed internet. There is only ethernet cable and when I get on, it requires that I login to a Time Warner Business something or another internet thing. When I try to connect my PS3 to the connection, it passes getting an IP Address but fails the internet connection. I also tried logging in via the web browser, which as expected doesn't do anything and gives me an error about SSL and handshaking.

Other than maybe getting a wireless router to share the connection, is there a way to connect it with this type of connection? I'm not too network savvy.

My kids have been in the habit of leaving the PS3 on for long periods of time (sometimes up to 8 hours at a time) usually paused on a game. Tonight I found it left on again and paused on Indiana Jones. It sounded like the Blu-Ray drive was trying to seek back and forth. When I hit the button to quit the game, the screen went black. I eventually had to shut off the PS3 by holding down the power button.

When I turned the system back on, it refused to recognize that the game disc was still in. I ejected it (which worked fine) and cleaned the disc. When I popped it back in, again the system wouldn't recognize that there was a disc in it (i.e. no logo shows up or even an entry on the game menu for a disc-based game loading). I tried another disc, and the same thing happened. It was only then that I realized that there was no noise of the disc spinning up to speed.

I have a feeling that this will need to go in for service, but I was hoping that maybe somebody here might have some tips. Does this sound like a dead drive? Anything I can do to try to bring it back to life myself?

Thanks!

I have a dedicated home theater using the PS3 as the Blu-Ray player. I have a 7.1 set-up but I am becoming more disheartened by the fact that few Blu-ray DVD's utilize the 7.1. (Even new ones like transformers and Iron Man are 5.1).

Here is my question. I am hooked through HDMI with LPCM pass through to the Onkyo 605. Because the PS3 does the decoding, I can only get the sound through 5.1 even though the Onkyo has the capability to run 5.1 through 7.1. (I use a SD DVD player for SD DVD's and the Onkyo utilizes DD EX). Bitstream is not the answer because it only passes 5.1 in HD formats. Is there anyway to get all 8 speakers working using the PS3 for 5.1 HD audio formats? Or was my 7.1 setup a waste for now?

Thanks

The 7.1 is passed via LPCM if it is there. Your frustration should be directed to the movie studios about their encode and not at the equipment manufacturer. One thing I did like was the fact that Yamaha and a few other AVR's do 5.1->7.1 matrixing. This was the one of the features that pushed me to the Yamaha rx-v661 vs. the Onkyo 605.

What are you trying or playing to output 1080i?
Most games dont play in 1080i if thats what you are trying to do.
Make sure you have the 1080i box checked in your settings.

I have a few probs here.. Audio skipping when starting a game/movie.. bad sign of PS3 breaking?

I noticed earlier when i played a game it was skipping for at least 10 secs before going back to sounding normal -- then i later played a movie and it was skipping as well, doing the same thing! I had to power it off.. This isn't lookin too hot? :(
I unplugged then plugged in my cables, my friend told me might be the HDMI cable? I'm gonna buy a new one, though. Also sometimes my screen will go black for 2 seconds, then return to normal... I don't think its my TV, cos I got a new one last month..

Any help appreciated! ;)

Hey all

I know this is probably in this forum somewhere but I'll just go ahead and ask.

I, like many others, was unhappy about my PSN ID name so I went ahead and created a new user and new PSN ID. I only have 2 things downloaded that I paid for and a theme I downloaded from the internet and I don't have any trophies, just experience stuff in Resistance 1.

My question is how can I keep the two games I have and theme after I delete my original user (I have not done this yet)? I guess I also need to copy over my game saves from my original user. People say make sure you copy those things before you delete the original user but I don't understand how you do that. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try going into settings->BD settings -> 24fps and turn it to off. Audio can get out of sync if your display is doing a 3:2 pulldown to run @ 60fps. It will help with both audio and video problems for most users. The "automatic" setting will sometimes throw a tv or two off.

So the issue won't be that you won't be able to keep them, but it will be that if you lose them in the future (HD crash, etc) that you won't be able to download them again for free.

Best way is to have an external HD via usb 2.0 and back-up your HD every so often, so you can always recover all your paid items directly instead of having to re-download the paid content. I don't believe there is a way to copy the saves and restore them to a new user, but maybe someone else more knowledgeable about the situation can answer.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone is having the same problem. No matter which PS2 game i try to play i never get sound from all the rear channels, just stereo and the sub. I'm outputting PCM through HDMI to my AVR-2808 and the amp displays MULTI-CHANNEL 7.1 but I only get stereo.

Do i have to change some settings everytime i plat a PS2 game?

Thanks!!

Thanks!!

The PS2 games you are playing are probably only 2 channel sound. You might want to try changing your AVR to Prologic II or some other sound effect if you want to hear more channels.

I have a Denon AVR-2808 and it is already set to matrix any input signal (unless it is flagged like DD, DTS, etc) to the surround channels through all the inputs (HDMI, Optical, Coaxial, etc), so in theory the stereo signal should be heard from all speakers. I don't know if GT3 is a stereo or Prologic II compatible game but on my old Onkyo AVR i could hear the game from all speakers.

Could it have something to do with PCM/Bitstream sound output???
I recall having heard something about it...

hey everybody,

I'm having trouble with my home theatre setup isolated to my ps3 connection.

I recently purchased an onkyo 606, to provide me with high quality sound to go along with the hd picture that my setup provides.

On to the problem: When connecting the ps3 to the receiver, I receive sound and picture upon startup, so I threw in my newly purchased weeds season 3 blu-ray, when entering the menu the audio cut in and out and the video was a tad bit choppy and eventually all connection was lost somewhere between my ps3-receiver-tv...

could it be the hdmi cables im using? the sound settings on my receiver? or an issue with my tv which is a Samsung lnt-4061...my set-top box works flawlessly.

hdmi is set to -through- on my receiver
ps3 settings are 1080p, and sound settings were automatically detected using hdmi as well. this is becoming very frustrating any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try a different BD disc or a DVD or CD after you had this problem? If it is only the one Blu-Ray, it seems llike it would be a dirty disc. I had similar problems with some brand new Planet Earth BDs. Somehow they got all smudged up and wouldn't play properly or wouldn't be recognized at all. I cleaned them up and they worked like new. If it won't play any BD, I'd guess you got a bad PS3, which also happens.

Yes. You could try setting HDMI on PS3 to bitstream - that ought to confirm that the AVR might not process 2 channel PCM output to Prologic II (I don't think mine does either). Be sure to set it back to PCM for "HD" sound.

EDIT: ...IT WORKS!!! damn low-grade hdmi couldnt handle the job, got myself a high quality 1.3 spec 6foot for $25!!

I'm trying to connect my PS3 to a hotel internet. I am currently going to a college that had to put me in a hotel room due to overbooking. It's a wired connection in which I tried to set up. I had to literally hit the Prnt Scrn button when I accessed the ipconfig box on my computer because they have it set to disappear within a tenth of a second of appearing. I needed to get all the IP information to input onto the PS3.

However that failed, and so did when I set the PS3 to do it automatically. Is there any work-around to this? I entered in the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, etc... that all displayed on the ipconfig box onto the PS3 and it still comes at as internet connection failed.

Any help?

Not really a problem but are there other ways to back up the data on my PS3? I'm about to ship it off to repair and I need 12 gigs so a thumbdrive wouldn't work. I have an external HD but the PS3 can't detect it, its formatted NTSF if that matters. Can I back the data up directly to my laptop somehow?

I've been trying to setup my ps3 to my pioneer plasma-tv(pdp-428xg) using HDMI but all i get is a blank screen. I used to play my ps3 through COMPONENT cable at 720p with no problem. I'm using a HDMI 1.3 cable and i have two of them but different brand.
I've tried both cable and all 3 hdmi ports on the tv but to no avail. Sometimes the channel/input display will start flashing. The plasma tv is hd ready but i i think its capable of receiving 1080p input.
I've also tried using both component and hdmi together to setup the ps3 through the display settings but still blank/black screen.
I've tried just using the hdmi and holding the 'on' button till second beep but still no display.

Help me pls.

Thanks
-MJ

Bitstream will send [over HDMI], all channels from the source disc's audio as PCM uncompressed to the receiver, the receiver will then handle the multi-channel decoding then route accordingly to the speakers. Bitstream is not locked into only 5.1 on HDMI 1.3spec, you'll need to set Bitstream on the player to get all channels from the player to the receiver (and be using end-to-end HDMI 1.3 cabling to/from 1.3spec A/V gear. If you're not running end-to-end 1.3 HDMI, then your bottleneck limitation is in the gear you're using and/or cabling. Bitstream is what you should be using from your PS3, "IF" you're receiver can decode what you're sending it. If your receiver can't handle the source encoding technology, then you'll have to use LPCM.

If you set the player to PCM, the player is handling the decoding before its sent to the receiver.

Is there any way to download a PURCHASED movie from the Sony/Playstation store from the PS3 and send it to your PC to burn to DVD or Blu-Ray?

I like that you can buy them, but if I can't play the movie on my other DVD/BR players in the house (i.e. portable media), then I'll just keep buying them in the store, because I that way we can play them on any player in the house [every room in the house has a player in it (we're big movie buffs) :). I dont want to have to move the PS3 around in order to play a movie I purchased.

I also want this burning ability to make back-ups too in-case the hard drive in the PS3 crashes. I'd hate to spend a lot of money on buying movies then end up loosing the collection if the drive crashes.

I can't be the only one that's had this issue, am I overlooking something and you can burn the movies you download with it from the PS store?

Whenever I play a game, the playstation outputs it at 480p. I have gone into the display settings and tried automatic and when I hit the enter button me tv screen goes blank for about a minute, when I have the screen back all I can do hit cancel, if I try to go forward it just goes blank again. I have also tried to go into the custom setting and have selected 1080i, but will not let me deselect 480p. It is greyed out. I know the games I do have all say 720p, but doesn't the ps3 convert to 1080i. My tv does not display 720p, it is a older model, if it gets a 720p signal it will just downcovert it to 480p. I am checking the output through my receivers display. When I am not playing a game and just int he main display of the ps3 it outputs 1080i, this seems to be a problem only when playing games. Am I doing something wrong?

If your tv is not an HDTV then you wont get 720p and up. Thats why you cant de-select 480p. If I understand your question correctly you said its older set that only does 480p. If it is an HDTV how do you have the PS3 connected? With what cable?

It is a older model. It does not support displaying 720p, it downrez's it to 480p. It does support 1080i. I was a early adopter and 720p was not really available at the time. Think I missed by a yr or 2.

It seems not, which I just figured out a few days ago. I just assumed it would since the Xbox 360 does. My own fault for not researching it enough. Luckily I only have 3 games for the PS3. I bought it primarily for a Blu-Ray player. I will just buy all my games for my Xbox 360 until Sony decides to do a update to allow upconverting to 1080i.

My brother was also an early adapter of HDTV and has one that doesn't support 720p. Although he, like you, has some 720p games that have to be downconverted to 480p, he has other games that display fine in 1080i. While the supported resolutions are listed on the back of PS3 game boxes, he has found some games that list 1080i on the back of the box actually downres to 480P. I recommend not giving up on the PS3 entirely as a gaming system, but rent a game before you buy it to make sure it can display 1080i.

Since I do not have to look on the back of the box for Xbox 360 games, I will just buy for that. I will always use the PS3 for blu-ray movies, but thats it. Maybe they will fix the problem someday and that will change my mind. My main reason for buying the PS3 was for movies anyways. The gaming was just a bonus, which Sony just lost.

I bought the Envision L32W761 HDTV cause it was in my price range and for the most part was what I wanted. Almost everything with it is absolutely fine with one exception.
Many games I play on my PS3 have a huge sound problem. Some of the sounds in games have a loud static feedback sound. I have the PS3 hooked up to the display with HDMI (I have tried several different cables, even a high-end version I bought). I play blu-ray movies through it all the time without ever having sound problems. I watch cable tv without problems. It only happens with games and not even every game. I play GTA4 absolutely fine but Motorstorm in unplayable. I've been thinking about getting external speakers but don't know if it'll help. In fact, I'm not really sure what the problem is, the tv or the ps3.

Well it's either the PS3 or your tv. Got another tv to try it on? If not yours maybe a close buddy's?

If you can narrow it down to one or the other, you can either replace the TV and see if it occurs again or maybe get Sony to fix the ps3 if it's out of warranty.

Then thats all tour going to get is 480p. You can deselect all the resolutions in the PS3 settings. Go to display settings then video settings and put a check on 1080i only. That way it will not default to 480p. You may not like how the game looks when its forced to 1080i. I would consider you looking for a new set that supports 720p. 1080p and your covered all the way around. Does your tv have HDMI? How do you have PS3 connected to your set?

I cannot deselect 480p, that is the problem. I have 1080i selected.
The PS3 is connected to my Onkyo receiver, through HDMI, then out to my tv using a HDMI to DVI cable. The Xbox 360 games that are upconverted to 1080i look just fine, so how they look should not be a problem if the PS3 was actually the hi-def machine Sony claims it to be. I will not buy a new tv just because the PS3 is limited in functionality. Its primary use is for watching blu-ray movies, not playing games. I have just bought a few games for it, but now i will buy only for the Xbox 360.

Blu-ray movies are showing in 1080i. The fact is the PS3 does not convert 720p games to 1080i like the Xbox 360 does. For whatever reason it will upconvert PS2 games and DVD movies to 1080i though. From doing research, this is just the way it is with the PS3.

I saw some similar threads but never a resolution for this issue.

I just picked up a ps3 and I'm having a problem getting sound over the optical cable.

My connections:
Video: hdmi (ps3) -> dvi (tv) Looks great
Audio: Optical (ps3) -> Optical (receiver)

Audio set up on the ps3:
Sound Settings -> Digital Out (Optical) -> Checked boxes for Dolby Digital 5.1 ch., DTS 5.1 ch., AAC, Linear PCM 2 ch. 44.1 Hz, Linear PC 2 ch. 48 Hz

BD/DVD Settings (I've searched online and this is what people recommended):
BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)-> Bitstream

My receiver only has one optical in and I have the PS3 plugged directly into it. If I switch the cable to my 360 over optical everything works great. So the cable works and so does my receiver. The receiver is old, a Pioneer VSX-D511 but it works great with the 360.

Anyone have any ideas?

So here's my issue... 80gb PS3 , 3 weeks old , delivered from Sonystyle.

When I'm on the Cross Media Bar screen , I get quick " blinks " or "flashes " of what look like wavy striped patterns every 5 to 10 seconds on my TV screen . This also happens during regular DVD playback . So far the Blu-Ray playback shows none of these "artifacts" , and the all the games I've played have been fine except Gran Turismo Prologue . These flashes make the G.T.P. unplayable !

Little back round info : 80GB PS3 via HDMI ( confirmed 1.3 cable ) into Yamaha RX-V3800 . My 3800 is fed into my LG 60PG60 via HDMI . ( 1.3 cable as well )

Is this a common issue ? I did try to run the PS3 directly to the HDMI port on the T.V. and it seemed liked the blinking was a little less frequent , but still there.

Please help ! I hope I don't have to send it back - It's brand freaking new !

Thanks for your help...

What happens when you plug your ps3 directly to the tv, do you see the same issues? If no, then your AVR is likely having a few issues in the switching.

You can also try a factory reset by holding down the power button up front for 10 seconds till you hear the triple-beep and power up and see if it correctly detects the audio and video.

I'm having screen issues with my 60 gig. Can play for a while maybe 20 mins then the screen goes all green blotches (can't see any of the game just green and black patches) and everything seems to freeze. When I restart the problem is still there. I am connected to my TV via HDMI and have had no problems previous to this. (apart from a replacement unit after the hard drive died)

Then tried connecting with supplied AV cable and same issue (but black screen with white squiggles). Have also tried resetting by holding down power button but this doesn't help either. Only by leaving the PS3 off for an hour or so can I play again but only for about 20 mins.

Has anyone any ideas of things to try or am I going to have to try and get Sony support?

Sounds like it's overheating, or that you've got a cold solder joint somewhere in there.

Is the fan running?

yeah the fan seems to run for a while but then goes very quiet.

Like the MANY other PS3 owners I'm getting DNS problems trying to get the PS3 online via wired connection.

Sony support was worthless (big shock). I've tried numerous forum suggestions regarding DNS settings, router configs, modem resets, etc..

I always get an IP no problem (using manual entry, auto never works) but the PS3 always bombs out with the FAR TOO TYPICAL DNS error 80710102.

What really baffles me is when I first turned on the PS3, did initial setup stuff (but prior to ever entering ANY Network connection stuff) the PS3 automatically went out to the internet, got the updated FW, installed it without issue. Now if it can do this completely on it's own why does it get so screwed up on subsequent attempts to access the internet??

I have six devices on my network, three computers and three media streaming devices, half are wired and half are WiFi, ALL connect FLAWLESSLY using simple DHCP through the same router! No running around the damn house power cycling everything to attempt to connect, no DNS errors, they simply DO connect when I turn the device on.

I have no interest in online gaming, just basic net surfing & video stuff.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Surely this can't be the norm (though based on the NUMEROUS PS3 DNS issues in numerous different forums I'm starting to wonder if this is the norm).

If it matters: wired PS3 80 gb (the new one, old 40 gb model), Linksys WRT54GL (stock FW), WinXP, Arris VOIP Modem, HS Cable Internet

Never tried WiFi, but would the same DNS issues not exist for both wired & WiFi?

I have a wired connection specifically to avoid WiFi issues for all of my AV gear. More reliable, no interference issues, faster speeds, etc...

But I'll give WiFi a try..........

EDIT: Well, so far so good via WiFi. I've been turning the PS3 on and off several times an hour and it is connecting each time.
We'll see. I still have my doubts. I'll report back.

just trying to do some basic troubleshooting. Now we know it's something in the wired connection, and that the networking component of the PS3 works fine.

This would lead to a problem in the wired network card of the ps3. You could try calling SONY tech support w/this information. Might help diagnose the problem...

yeah the fan seems to run for a while but then goes very quiet.

Try positioning an external fan so that it blows air through the case and see if you can use it for a longer period. Obviously not a permanent solution, but it should help narrow down the problem.

If you're brave (and your PS3 is out of warranty), you might try disassembling it and blowing the gunk out with compressed air, maybe even reapply thermal grease to the CPU/GPU heat sink. Disassembly instructions here (http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3_disassembly_tutorial.htm).

I had same issue months back. Found the solution online. Best way for me was to have the PS3 use my router to go to the web OUTSIDE my network.

Create a new static IP number ( 1 or 2 off current one) and put that number in the PS3. Use same sub mask.
Go into your router and set up a static IP address with the number you put in the PS3. Then also put that static IP address in the DMZ zone of your router and save.

My PS3 uses my 8 year old Linksys router outside of MY network and always connects in the 90%. Before it use to drag and disconnect all my other pc's on the newwork.

Hope this helps.

I just picked up a ps3 and I'm having a problem getting sound over the optical cable.

Is this the case for all media, or just certain types? How about DVDs? BDs? PS3 games? PS1/2 games?

Usually everything works for me with video media if I have my rather old Harrmon-Kardon AVR 55 set to optical + Dolby Digital, and I make sure I've selected that choice in the disc's setup menu.

With games things are more tricky. PS1/2 games use matrixed surround ("ProLogic"). For those I have to switch the receiver to analog + ProLogic. Some PS3 games seem a bit schizophrenic about which audio codecs they use. I spent a while trying to figure out how to get Ratchet + Clank Future to play correctly, for instance. Seemed as though the setup screen used one audio technology, but the game used another. That might have just been my unfamiliarity with the system, though, as it was the first game we tried playing.

This happened to me the other night. Solution is unplug your router then plug it back in. If this doesnt work try unplugging your modem then the router.
I have my PS3 set with static IP wired to router. I dont have my PS3 in the DMZ. But I do have specific ports set open to the PS3 IP address. Here are some.

Sounds like some ps3' are having over-heating problems. One option for the overclocking-friendly crowd out there is to replace the thermal paste to better transfer the heat.

Are you hearing the fan go at full bore when the machine shows problems?

SaltwaterCat, Lord_Zath, Schnurmac: Thank you all for your input.

I'm connecting fine via WiFi with an 85% signal (sometimes 90%). But I'm still getting some *stuttering* on video streams (which was a major reason I wanted a wired connection). For now I'm just loading all videos directly on the PS3 hard drive till I get this wired DNS issue sorted out.

More info on my problem & configuration:

- I always use the "manual" IP for wired & wireless setup in the PS3. If I use "auto" (DHCP) the PS3 won't even get an IP. All proper subnet & DNS settings are accurate per my network.
- In most attempts at PS3 Ethernet connection using manual IP it gets an IP but then I get the DNS error.
- I have not actually assigned a static IP in my router but if I am manually entering it on the PS3 is this not the same as static IP?
- I do have the PS3 IP in my DMZ on my router. Is this not the same as manually entering all the port forwarding stuff?
- I'm assuming if all settings are identical for wired and WiFi, do not both types use the same DNS info? i.e. Why am I getting DNS errors via Ethernet yet DNS seems fine via WiFi?
- Some attempts to connect via Ethernet the PS3 tells me the Ethernet cable is not connected?
- I've tried some of the OpenDNS settings per other forums but no difference in DNS error. Again, PS3 WiFi connects fine with my ISP supplied DNS info.

My conclusion (though I'm not good with network stuff) is that my brand new PS3 Ethernet board must be faulty. But I'm open to any further ideas and suggestions to further test Ethernet.

Thanks again. :)

Something you could try doing prior to x-ferring all the video to the hdd is backing up the hdd, formatting, and reinstalling the OS and other stuff. Other than that, I'd have to agree with your assessment that it's probably a faulty network card.

Yep, mine s**t the bed. Won't keep from freezing up if it's been on longer than 45 minutes or so. I'ts out of warranty so I've already filed a claim through American Express. For those who do not know they automatically add a year of extended warranty to items purchased with the card (warranty time will vary depending on original manufacturers warranty).

You guys are going to shoot me, but here goes....

I seemed to have solved my wired PS3 DNS issues by removing my AV Ethernet switch from the chain. Before you start *slapping* me....hear me out....

My network, all wired:
Internet > Cable Modem > Router > AV switch/hub > (three streaming devices incl PS3)

The switch/hub (I honestly don't know the correct term for this) is a simple, wired only, one line in and four line out RJ45 Ethernet device.

I've never ONCE had a problem streaming to my other two streaming devices using this switch/hub thingy....so it never even DAWNED on me it would/could cause an issue. But I've never owned a gaming console like a PS3 before. Obviously there is something about this switch/hub that the PS3 does not like.

Any ideas? Settings to get the PS3 to accept this switch/hub? PS3 type consoles just cannot have such a device in the path? Why not?

Thanks. :)

EDIT: I just looked under the item, it's a HUB, not a switch, if this matters.

Hope I'm not insulting anyone here but my nephew had these same PSN connect issues described here including the error 80710102 code last year. I did a little online scouring and found a set of instructions (can't remember now where I found them) asking for all kinds of PS3 resets and updates, etc. At one point in the instructions they said to DISABLE the Media Server Connection under Network settings. I wasn't about to be responsible for effing up their PS3 so I did the simplest thing first. I disabled their media server connection and it instantly fixed the issue. Hope this helps.

As far as I know the only thing to look out for in a hub is that one port is usual different from the others (it can be disabled if the uplink port is being used, and there might be a switch to control this).

Either that or the fact that the PS3 is capable of 10/100/1000 speeds might have confused the auto sensing on an older hub.

Have you tried switching the resolution to 480p or 720p on HDMI, did that work? If that works, slowly up the resolutions to see what's going on.

BTW, does 1080p via component work ok? (games can do 1080p, BD's can only go up to 1080i)

I really think its the hdcp in the firmware because my 360 wont play movies ethier and it gives me this hdcp error.I read that a ps3 wont work with hdmi cables unless the hdtv is hdcp compliant

Thanks Krik. I had an old 54g router laying around so I swapped it out for the mini hub thing. Changed the router admin: selected router instead of gateway, turned off WiFi and firewall and all security.

Using the normal "internet input" ethernet port doesn't work with the router in this configuration. Putting the "input" cable as one of the four "device" ports works. I think this is how the router operates as a switch.

Works flawlessly! Connects wired every time. I guess the PS3 needs a switch not a hub. I'll next try the hub wired like above to see if that works.

I liked the very small and black hub in the AV rack as it was much less noticeable than a big 'ole router. ;)

EDIT: The nice little discrete black "hub" is now back in place in the AV rack but is wired as a SWITCH as mentioned above. All is well.
(Until I want to add a fourth wired device :eek:)

A hub will divide the bandwidth up amongst connected devices, whereas a switch/router maintains the same bandwidth for every device. That could be cause...

I recently bought a new Sony KDL46z4100 TV to replace my old 720P DLP set. I recently noticed that when playing BRs the TV only sees 1080i. The TV sees 1080p while in the XMB menu and when playing games or viewing photos just fine but when a Blue Ray disk is playing there is only 1080i seen by the TV. I have tried resetting the sytem and have turned off the 24 FPS mode in the PS3 setup. I am using an HDMI cable between the TV and the PS3 with optical audio to reviever.

The PS3 is around 8 months old and I have never had the 1080p capable TV until now so I have never had a chance to test this before. I belive I have a faulty disk drive and need to use my warrantee service option. What is the best way to get this unit serviced and is there any suggestions for things to try before throwing in the towel and returning the unit for service?

I manually tried to set up the video output options for the HDMI but the 480p is set for ON and "greyed" out and I cannot change it. I did shut the 1080i off leaving only the greyed 480p and the 1080p selected. When I view BDs the TV sees 480p. When I add the 1080i choice back in the HDMI setup I than get the 1080i back again but still no 1080p. It looks like I get to experience the wonderfull Sony Customer Service...I can hardly wait.

Thanks for the suggestion though,

I'm having some problems with my Playstation3 video. I have a feeling its my cable, but I want to make sure its not something else before I buy a new one.

When plugged in using component there are purple horizontal bars that slowly scroll up the screen. The cable is a Monster Cable, Monster Game Gamelink 400 CVAA (Thats what it says on the cable). I've attempted to test it by using HDMI, but I can't get it to show a picture when using HDMI. For the HDMI I've tried do the reset holding down the power button for 3 seconds, and I've connected both the component and HDMI to try to get it to work with no luck. Anyone have an ideas if this the cable, I'm just hoping its not something worse like the PS3 itself.

Do you have another HDMI source to test the HDMI to the tv? It could be the tv's firmware or the tv's port that is the problem as well.

If you need another HDMI cable, go to monoprice and pick them up. Equal or higher quality than Monster for 1/10th of the price.

Have you also tried different resolutions on the HDMI? like 720p or 1080i?

When I turn my PS3 on, either with the front panel or the SIXAXIS controller, my Nyko Bluwave receiver that is plugged into USB usually snags the controller 1 identity. This is annoying in games, e.g. GTA that require you play the game with controller 1. You have to go through the procedure to re-assign the controller number before you can play.

Does anyone know any trick, other than leaving the USB unplugged (which kind of defeats the point of a remote control), that will cause the SIXAXIS controller to reliably become controller 1?

Do the other IR remote solutions have this same problem?

Has anyone had the problem of blu rays movies freezing up during playback? Games work fine so does everything else. When it does freeze it doesn't resume playback, I have to exit to the ps3 menu take out the disc and put it back in and 10 to 30 min. later it freezes again. Is ther a fix or do I have to send it to PS?

This has never happened to me. I'd suggest calling up Sony...

I was checking out videos on YouTube on my PS3 the other night. As I tried to exit the browser, it froze. There was no response from the controller or the standby button, whatsoever. I had to turn it off with the switch in the back. Any ideas what may have caused this?

Does it do it with any blu ray movie? May just be bad disk. Mine would freeze but also games would to. It got to the point where the disk would not even be listed under video or game. When yours freezes do you see the blue disk icon?
I had to send mine in for repair. What model PS3 do you have?

I don't get any sub from my ps3 while playing video games, but my sub works fine when watching a movie (blu-ray and dvd) on the ps3 and with other things. My ps3 is hooked up to my Sony DA5200ES receiver through HDMI. I have a Outlaw Audio LFM-1 EX sub connected with LFE. No matter what format the sound is in I don't get any bass, the receives shows that it is getting the LFE signal, but absolutely nothing goes to the subwoofer. Any ideas?

My 60GB launch model just did this for the very first time today while watching The Incredible Hulk BR from Netflix. Frove up and when I tried to play it again I got error 80029941. Games are playing fine and everything else seems to be normal. I'm hoping it was a defective disc.

Yesterday afternoon, I finished playing a game on my PS3 and put it on standby. A few hours later I started it back up again, only to be met with a "Not Supported Mode" black screen. Nothing was changed between the time I turned the PS3 off, and the time I started it back up, so I am perplexed.

My TV is a Samsung DLP with a max resolution of 1080i. I am work right now so I don't know the exact model # but it is about 4 years old. I have the PS3hooked up via component cables. I tried resetting the PS3 video settings by holding down the power button while on standby, I heard some beeps but nothing changed, I still got the "Not Supported Mode" screen. I switched the component cables to a different TV input, same problem. After that, I hooked up the PS3 via composite cables. I then went into the display settings to try to change the resolution. 480i was checked, so then I shut down the PS3 and switched it back to the component cables. Same error screen when I started back up. Then I plugged back in the composite cables and went back into the settings, and checked off "1080i" which is what I always used before. The screen went black of course because a composite cable can't show that resolution, but I went ahead and shut down and restarted with the component cables... same problem. My final idea was to go into the settings and do the "reset factory defaults" option. That didn't fix the problem either.

I have tried starting the PS3 up with a game, a movie, and nothing inserted and it's always the same error message.

I am sorry for the long and somewhat rambling post, but I am at my wit's end here. It's very frustrating because I don't understand how it could be working fine for a year and a half and then suddenly stop working when nothing has changed.

Thanks for any assistance anybody can provide!

It could be your TV...

Check the TV and see if there's a way to reset it to factory defaults. Do you have anything else that uses components that you could connect to the TV? See if those work. If not, it might be time to get a new TV or at least get it repaired...

Have kind of a strange issue, thought I'd see if I can get help here before creating a thread.

Since 2.5 I can no longer access most of my streamed music. The strange part is I can access my music playlists and other media just fine, but trying to pull up tunes through "All Music" gives me a DLNA protocol error (7522).

I'm just using WMP to stream, and I went in to make sure everything was shared and sync'd but I might have missed something. Any advice?

I plugged my Wii up into the same component jack and it worked, so the jack is still good. I also got my PS2 component cable and tried to use it with the PS3 (I assume they're compatible?) and got the same black screen with the error message, so I assume it is not a cable problem. I'll see if I can find a way online somewhere to reset my TV to defaults.

Good to know it's not the TV then. Yeah, PS2 component cable is the same as the PS3's. You could also try doing a format and restore on the ps3's hard drive. That's like the last thing you want to do before calling Sony tech support.

I just bought a brand new Toshiba-40" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV-40RV525U and connected it directly to my ps3 using a Dynex HDMI cable. I kept getting flicker when the ps3 is set to 1080p on the x-bar, however, BD movies worked fine. So i thought it was my crappy HDMI cable, so I bought a Monster Cable-Ultra Series 800 4' HDMI A/V for $99, but I still have the same problem. My tv runs at 1080p at both 24hz and 60hz.

Any suggestions?

I managed to fix my problem last night. I felt so stupid for not doing this before, but anyways if someone else happens to have this problem and read this, here is what I did:

I have 3 component jacks on my TV. 2 say "480p, 720p, 1080i" and 1 says "480i, 480p". I have always had my PS3 in one of the two that can do 1080i and I had the PS3 set up to display that resolution. Sometime in the span of a couple of hours while it was on standby it apparently reset itself to 480i, so that jack would no longer work. I plugged in the cable into the 480i/480p jack and then went into the options and changed it to 480p which then allowed me to switch to one of the other jacks and change it to 1080i. Now all is well again and if it happens again I'll know what to do!

I think I'm in trouble. I just got my PS3 back (second time) and want to redownload all my PSN games. Now it tells me "The PS3 system cannot be activated. This content cannot be used. 5 PS3 systems......" I traded PSN games here a couple of times, and this is my 3rd PS3 that I'm trying to get my games back. The other two I've downloaded my games on. Now I'm assuming this will be the 6th PS3. What do I do now? I can't activate it, it tells me to deactivate the other PS3s.

Has anyone had problems with getting a downloaded game to install? I purchased the Tekken: DR bundle, and I've tried to download and install it 7 times now. The download finishes (it takes about an hour), but the game won't install (error code 80029564).

Before anyone asks:

-I have a 160GB HDD, with over 100GB of free space
-I have the PS3 in a DMZ, so it's probably not a port issue
-I have tried background downloading and not background downloading, multiple times each way

Well, I've downloaded it 11 times now, and still it won't install. I tried backing up the hard drive and restoring the backup, and it didn't do any good. I even restored the default settings first, because I thought that "Restore PS3 System" was for restoring a backup (whoops).

The last resort, I suppose, is to copy the game saves manually (good thing I don't have any protected files) to a USB flash drive, then format the drive and try again.

I have to say, this has really soured me on downloadable games from PSN, and even digital distribution in general. I've never had a problem installing a disc-based game, or even getting a patch. I'm almost certain they won't give me a refund, and if I don't get this installed, I won't buy any more PSN games.

Does PSN offer any free or try & buy games (free trial period)? If they do you might want to try another free dl, see if that loads.
Maybe it's that particular game that is malfunctioning?

I have posted 2 pictures with the first one being the problem I am about to describe. When I have the PS3 connected via hdmi through my receiver, the Sony HT-SS2300, occasionally the color gets messed up and the reds seem to dissapear (see images). Sometimes if I restart it or switch the input to something else and back to the PS3 it goes back to normal. When I connect it straight to the TV this problem does not occur. I'm pretty sure it is not my receiver, but rather some sort of a compatability issue between the PS3 and Sony receivers, which you would not expect to happen. I say this because I have heard of this issue with a few other people and Sony receivers, with them exchanging their receivers thinking they were broken but then having the same problem occur.

If anybody else has heard of or experienced this problem themselves, let me know if you've found any solutions. It too will post if I find a fix.

I am sending my PS3 in for repairs tomorrow. Yesterday, it started to do a lot of weird things. First, in Far Cry 2, I was getting artifacting. In BF: Bad Company, it was freezing or the sound would stop. Then, when I went to watch the Golden Compass last night, it was pausing every few seconds.

I really hope that they don't send me a refurbished system! I have a 60gb system that I bought last June and I would rather have them send me a new 40gb instead.

I called Sony yesterday. I have send mine in as well. I was playing Madden online Friday night and my PS3 just rebooted by itself. I tried other games and it would do the same. The next day, I turned it on only to get a green light, then yellow, then flashing red lights.

SirDrexl

Well, I finally got the PSN game to install, by changing the PS3's IP address. I have no idea why that worked, but it did. I had the PS3 in a DMZ, and changing the IP address meant the ports were closed again. So, anyone else having trouble can try this if you use static IPs like me.

There's another little thing I thought I'd mention. When I did the HDD backup, after the PS3 restarted it said there was no backup data, which scared me. It turns out that my enclosure (Antec MX-100) was shutting itself off when the PS3 rebooted. I guess it does that when it gets a signal to shut down, or no signal at all. So, I had to push the switch off and on again as the PS3 rebooted, so it would be started up when the PS3 looks for the backup data.

An easy way to test if it's the connection type is to connect it directly to your router if you can. If everything works better, then you know it's the wireless...

I have a question. When I was trying different things to get the game to download by backing up the HDD and restoring, and accidentally resetting to default, I lost my trophies (they were just a few easy ones from Buzz, no biggie).

What caused that? Was it resetting to default ("restore PS3 system"), or backing up the HDD data and restoring that? There's an option to "sync to server" that I suppose you use to "back up" your trophies, but I was just wondering which operation erased them. Pretty soon I'll have some important trophies I'd like to keep, so I need to know what to do. If I had done the sync before resetting to default, would that have retained them?

I need some help. I have a X-530 "surround sound in a box" system from Logitech that I want to hook up to the PS3. Problem is I'm using HDMI to hook on the PS3 for 1080P viewing, and the surround system requires the left/right (red & white) audio cable inputs. This isn't a problem for my other game systems that use component cables because they include the red/white audio cables.. HDMI of course doesn't.

I've tried hooking generic red/white audio cables from my TV's "audio out" port to the surround system with no success. Is there any way I can output PS3 audio to the surround system without buying an expensive receiver?

You should be able to connect the muliti scart cable that came with the ps3 to your sound in a box for audio and HDMI for video. In PS3 menu set up the display settings for all resolutions then it will ask you if you want to set up audio. Your options will be like HDMI, digital for optical, and the scart. I dont think you will get all the channels from the two analog red and white. It will prob be stereo. Does your sound in a box have optical inputs? This would give you 5.1 sound.

Hi guys,

Has anyone been able to solve the problem of getting music stored on the PS3 harddrive to playback as PCM 2.0 over HDMI that can then have processing such as DPLII applied to it?

Currently, by deselecting PCM 2.0 176 Khz and setting CD output to 44 Khz I can get CD's to play back as PCM 2.0 but CD's ripped onto the harddrive playback as PCM 7.1 48 Khz even though they are stored as 44 Khz.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you'll have to check with the AVS forum dealing with your AVR. Applying PLII and PLIIx and other such methods are functions of the AVR and doesn't have anything to do with the ps3. Good luck!

He's noting the issue that on the PS3, 2-channel music is played back as 7.1, with the left and right fronts active and the other speakers silent. Since the receiver "sees" a 7.1 signal, it won't apply DPLIIx to it. The receiver is not at fault here.

Oh BTW, I mentioned earlier that I lost my trophies for Buzz when restoring a backup of the HDD. When I put the game in to play again, I got them back. So, maybe you have to insert each game you have trophies for again after restoring a backup. Or, maybe the trophies need saves from the corresponding games? I think I had transferred my save to a USB device before backing up.

Just make sure that bitstream output is selected, along with whatever options the receiver supports such as DD, DTS, and 2-channel at up to 96khz. That's about it, because I believe the Dynamic Range Compression only applies to DD decoded into PCM, not sent as a bitstream. Also, make sure the onscreen volume is set to 0, since moving it up or down introduces some distortion.

About that receiver color issue, have you tried messing with the setting for YCbCr/RGB/Auto? Try setting it to either YCbCr or RGB instead of Auto and see if the problem persists. If I set it to the wrong type expected by either of my displays, I get the wrong colors.

As far as the color issue, I have messed w/ those setting with no luck. The whole thing is almost mind boggeling as how it works fine sometimes then randomly gets messed up. As of now and until I hear of a known fix for this, I'll just leave it connected straight to the TV via hdmi and to the receiver via optical audio. Just curious, what setting do you use for YCbCr/RGB/Auto and I assume you have it connected to a receiver?

I don't think trophies are stored on the server, so if you can't find a way to store locally, they are probably lost. I noticed that all the graphics are stored on the server and the ps3 has to load them everytime you display them.

I have mine set to Auto, so it selects the appropriate mode whether I have it connected to the projector or computer monitor. The projector needs YCbCr while the monitor needs RGB. It doesn't have any trouble going through the receiver (Onkyo 605).

As for the audio options, make sure you select what your receiver supports. For instance, you wouldn't want to check off AAC unless the receiver can actually accept an AAC bitstream. I don't think many receivers can do that. (Note that you can still play AAC files.) You may also want to check to see if certain processing modes are disabled when using higher sampling rates.

I have been experiencing lock ups to the PS3 system and not sure what's causing it. It's happened to me 2-3 times now after playing Madden 09. This morning I played a complete game and when I went to quit the game no buttons on the game remote would work. All of the red port lights were flashing. I tried to use my other PS3 remote (the long one) and none of the buttons were working on that either.

I was able to eject the disc manually. I tried to turn the power off and the Green power light flashed but it never turned off.

I had to kill the power but turning off the switch in the back of the PS3 then when I turned it back on the Power light was red and the system was off.

The last time this happened, it was right in the middle of a game of Madden. Neither of my game remotes weren't working all of the sudden. It just lock up for no reason.

Has this happened to anybody else? If so what did you do to solve this issue?

Is the optical out not working for anyone else? I have my tv connected to the ps3 via hdmi and the receiver connected to the ps3 via optical. When I look at the light comming from the optical out on the ps3 it is very dim compared to other optical sources i have looked at. i am returning it to target today but just wanted to make sure this is not a common problem on all the new 80 gig units. thanks

Hey guys, sorry if this issue has been brought up previously but i've looked just about everywhere i could and still haven't found a solution to my problem. I currently have my PS3 connected to my receiver (Denon avr 988) via hdmi for audio and video. Everything was working fine up until a few days ago. It seems that i cannot hear the front left and right channels when it is outputing multi channel sound sources. The most obvious is the disappearance of the "keytone" in the PS3 main menu. This can be very irritating while playing games and movies as certain background sounds and voice overs disappear completely. At first i thought it might have been a PS3 problem, however, when i switch over to a 2 channel output on the receiver (such as 5 channel stereo, everything else excluding true 5.1 sound) or choose to manually output 2 channel sound from the PS3, then the sounds appear again. This causes me to think that it might be a sound processing issue caused by the AVR. I've tried resetting the default settings on the PS3 along with trying to manually output different sound sources from the sound options menu with no luck. Let me know if anyone has experienced a similar problem or might know what else might be wrong that i haven't thought of. Thanks.

Are you sure you have selected optical out for audio in the setup? My guess is that it's set for HDMI, and you need to change the audio setting to optical out. Note that you can only output audio via optical or HDMI, not both at the same time.

Hi, i have this weird thing happen on my PS3. I put in the disc on the PS3 and the disc just goes in about an inch and rotates but doesn't go in completely. I tried a different disc and same thing. I didn't want to force it for it may damage it more or get my disc stucked. Around this time i'm freaking out because the PS3 is barely 1 1/2 month old. I calmed down turned the unit off for awhile. I'm already thinking of calling customer service first thing in the morning. A little later, tried it again and same thing, then i tried to apply little force to it and it finally went in. Played one game, ejected the disc and when i pull the disc out there seem to be something holding it and it doesn't come out smoothly. Tried to put in a movie bluray disc now it takes little push. It seems that the more i eject and insert the disc it kind of makes it smoother. I was able to watch one movie after this and i wonder if this is something to be worried of. Before i have the disc come in and out smoothly. Anyone had this problem or experience before? Or is this early symptom of disc drive failure? I'm also puzzled what might have caused this.

Sounds like something is wrong with the disc drive. You should have to give it a slight push before the drive 'grabs' it and pulls it all the way in. As far as ejecting, it should come the majority of the way out and there will be a little pressure on it, but nothing very tight. I guess you could mess with it a couple mored days but if still doesn't seem right, give CS a call. Keep us posted.

Is there anyway to recover data from a PS3 (60g)
that's had a massive HDMI video failure...but still runs?

I fried my video output in a power surge that started when I tried to plug my display (Pioneer Kuro 5080 plasma) into a faulty extension cord. :(

The surge didn't go through my power bar (no reset required)
But traveled through a daisy-chain of HDMI cables instead.

Components that were turned on at the time and lost in the path of destruction:
1 HDMI port on my PDP-5080 plasma (still has 3 good ones)
1 HDMI input port on my Yamaha RX-V1800 AVR (still has 3 good ones)
1 HDMI input port on my new Epson 1080UB front projector (still has 1 good one)
1 HDMI 4x2 powered splitter/switcher (Monoprice) flickers but wont HDCP anymore.
1 PS3 60gig (Jan/07)
it powers up OK, lights up , but no video at all, not even through a composite connection.

I immediately took the PS3 upstairs to another TV and got no love :(

I had to grab a working SD DVD player from the Master Bedroom to check my other components
to find out what survived. That's when I discovered I still had several working HDMI ports on everything else. (Thank Goodness for extras!)

MY Toshiba HD-A2 and Motorola HD DVR STB were not powered up, (just standby mode)
so were not effected at all. Everything else was running when the zap happened.

I ruled out a power bar failure because it was not tripped,
plus the Epson 1080UB got zapped and it was on a totally different circuit.
only common denominator was the HDMI connection.

...and just last week I lost my XBOX360 to the RROD,
and was planning to get a new Elite.
(good thing I waited, or it would have been toasted too)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I've already picked up a new 80gig PS3
configured to my wireless router, loaded the latest FW, logged into PSN account
and started reloading themes, game demo's and trailers on-line.

Later I'll re-rip my fav CD's,
and re-load a bunch of photos via Thumb drive from my PC.

But long lost (unless someone can help me out)
are all my game saves and data for about a dozen games:

Resistance I
Motor Storm I
Burnout Paradise
Ratchet and Clank TOD
Uncharted Drakes Fortune
GT5PL,COD4,MGS4,GTA4...and a few others I cant recall

I guess I should have done a back-up :o

Man I was Totally Lost yesterday at first when I couldn't get ANYTHING to work,

Thought I totally toasted nearly $10k in electronics

It took me two years to build my man-cave toys up from a little 27" CRT TV
and thought I had lost it all in a split second.

It's certainly not as bad as it could have been,
but to chear myself up, I picked up LBP, and Motor Storm PR along with the new PS3
Tomorrow I'll grab Resistance 2, just in case I still need a little pick-me-up.

Okay I did a little more reading, <thanks search button>

Looks like I need to reconfigure around my fried HDMI port,
and in order to get the video reconfigured to my composite output I need to do a soft reset by turning the rear switch off,
install composite cables, then turn rear power on while holding the front power button for 10 seconds, should be followed by 3 beeps?

If I have any video through composite I can probably find and transfer my game saves onto a thumb drive to be transfered to my new PS3?

Well all is not lost on the old 60gig PS3 after all,
I did a soft reset on the PS3 that disabled the HDMI output,
(power off on back, turn back on while holding front power switch on for 10 seconds, wait for three beeps.)
and the system reset and found my composite connection.:)

I Have a Video signal again!!!,:)
it's only 480 resolution :o, and 2.0 audio, but at least I can recover data from my HDD to transfer to the new PS3 via thumb drive.
I also tested the Digi/Opt port and 5.1 audio still works too. Bonus!

Now that I know I can work around the dead HDMI port and the rest of the console is fully functional (other than no Loss-less audio or 7.1)
I just picked up a set of PS3 component cables for $19 at BB (open box item) for 1080 resolution and have a digi/opt connection for 5.1 audio out
so I can at least use it in another room, ...after all I still have a second AVR and enough spare speakers for another 7.1 system.

Need help ... Bought a PS3 80g for my nephew just over a yr ago. The system doesn't have that much use on it because he rairly plays it. It locks up on startup and all you can see is the yellowish-gold wavy line that says,"Sony computer entertainment." I've tried the reboot thing, turning it on then holding down the power button until it beeps twice and now all it does is show up a black screen when turned on. I talked to Sony today and they said it needs to be sent back and will cost $150 because the warranty just went out on the 1st of Nov. That's what I call bad timing. I was hoping someone might know something about it ... I'm PS3 stupid!!

It's kind of weird why i did that last Sunday, but i'll try to observe more and hopefully it doesn't occur anymore.

You can try a different output (switch from HDMI to component or vice-versa) and see if that fixes the problem since they use different outputs on the ps3.

If on the other hand you want that output fixed, $150 is the going rate for any sony repair.

Also, when connected to a receiver via hdmi (I have the ss2300), do you select bitstream or linear pcm for the audio? I know the ss2300 decodes dolby, PL, PLII, and DTS. Doesn't using LPCM just mean that the PS3 will do the decoding and send it to the reciever where as bitream would send it to the receiver to be decoded there? Which is the better way to go about it?

PCM, you can get lossless audio decoding versus a lossy version available via bitstream on the ps3.

Thanks,
Adam

I have the exact same TV and exact same problem as this guy. I am using 6ft HDMI cables that worked fine on my 32 inch TV.

Toshiba told me it was my "lesser quality" cable, so I bought a monster from best buy on the condition they would let me return it if it didn't work. Which it didn't, so I think it's a defect on the set, even though it takes my HTPC 1080p @ 60hz without problem.

If anyone has any help it would be appreciated.

I have my PS3 connected to my receiver (Panasonic SA-XR57)via HDMI through a monoprice HDMI switch.

Here is the issue:

I noticed the other day that when I'm playing video games, everything sounds fine. All 5 speakers (5.1 setup) and sub are working. If I watch a Blu-ray movie (Iron Man in this case) I noticed that the rear surrounds aren't working. So I start playing around with the audio settings.

Apparently, if I have the Linear PCM 5.1 Ch 96 kHz and Linear PCM 5.1 Ch 192 kHz options selected, All speakers (including rear surrounds) will work when watching Iron Man. But if I keep these settings and play a game, I will get no sound from my sub, all other speakers are working. Now if I deselect these same two options, my sub will work when playing games, but rear surrounds will not work when playing Blu-ray movies.

Can anyone shed some light on why this might be? Will I have to change the settings every time I want to watch a movie or play a game?

Anyway Im not able to get NAT2 or UPNP available like I had before. I have tried everything. I even put the PS3 IP in the DMZ of my wired router. My PS3 has a static IP. What is the deal? I can hear some people on head set and some but not all can hear me. Am I over looking something? I have a wireless network also when I used to switch to it I would always get NAT 2 but after the latest update it doesnt work either. Does anyone else have the same issue? Are you sure you have the Jawbone in Pairing mode? I'd only had to pair mine once and had forgotten how. I farted around for a while trying to get it into pairing mode (had to look it up finally).

While the Jawbone is OFF, hold down the rear button (normally used for volume control) for at least 3 seconds. The LED will start blinking, alternating between white and red. Your PS3 should pick it up immediately at that point. Pairing PIN is '0000.'

This is for the "Jawbone Classic;" by the way; I don't have a Jawbone 2.

I am having issues with the HDMI picture quality hooked up to a two year old 32" sceptre LCD-TV. The picture looks very oversharpened, like the whole image is composed of specks of grain and has that rocky look. I've tried turning down sharpness to zero in my TV controls and it's a little better but still there. Also, blacks and darker areas are crushed and a lot of detail is lost compared to using a component connection. MY RGB is set to limited already and superwhite is off, all on defaults, so those shouldn't be the problem. Are there other TVs that exhibit the same problem?

I recently bought a Panasonic Plasma TV and moved my PS3 from my Sony 910 CRT HD TV to the Plasma. I moved the Sony TV to the kid's playroom. The PS3 works fine on the plasma but when I tried to reconnect it to the Sony TV, I get no picture or sound. I've tried connecting it to the Sony with an HDMI to DVI cable, a PS3 component cable and the standard cable that came with the PS3. The PS3 is powering up OK and after moving it back to the Plasma it works fine.

I played with the settings on the PS3 while connected to the plasma to see if that would help. The Sony TV works fine when watching cable tv.

Any suggestions?

.... At one point in the instructions they said to DISABLE the Media Server Connection under Network settings. I wasn't about to be responsible for effing up their PS3 so I did the simplest thing first. I disabled their media server connection and it instantly fixed the issue. Hope this helps.

I had to do this today because I couldnt DL the LBP update without the server and psn network timing out. once i disabled media server connection all was good.

Does anyone know how to 'fix' this? or do i have to pick and chose when i want to use the media server vs when i need game updates and use of the PSN store....? I dont mind a 'techie' fix if that is required. I am at firmware 2.52, just dl'd on Nov 7,08.

The most likely culprit is your wireless router's uPnP software causing problems. First thing to try out is to disable uPnP on your router and see if that fixes your problem. It will also disable your Media Server connections as well. If that does seem to be the fix, then you should check to see if your router can be upgraded with DD-WRT firmware, otherwise you can get a new router or manually enable and disable uPnP or PS's Media Server Connectivity.

If you use a static IP address, try changing it. I don't know why, but that worked for me when I couldn't get a downloaded game to install. (I had not enabled media server or UPnP.)

I've noticed in the last couple of days that I have been having a problem with some CDs and BluRay playback.

I had turned on the PS3 without the TV to play some CDs and seemed to freeze after putting them in and tried to eject/power cycle and no luck, tried a couple of other CDs and 2/3 worked ok.

I played a music DVD fine on the player as it was playing in concert for about 2-3 hours and then repeated for another hour when I answered the phone.

Watched "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" fine on Saturday without issues. I saw that there was a firmware update and downloaded that later as I had the PS3 unplugged for the last couple of months as I moved and hadn't gotten around to hooking it up.

Tonite, I go to watch "So I Married An Axe Murderer" and it freezes about 25-26 minutes into the movie, and so I try ejecting and putting it back in and seems like it isn't recognizing it properly. I shut off the PS3, and try it again and seems to have issues. Next I leave the power off for a few minutes and then put the disk in and still not recognizing, and then power off on the top and on again and seem to get it to recognize.

I'm playing the movie again and it seems to stop again. I eject the disk (it took a while to get it to stop), check for finger prints, etc (brand new disk) and wipe off some smudges, put it back in and it freezes again a number of times tonite that I wasn't able to watch the end of the movie.

I tried to reset the PS3 to defaults and reconfigure the WiFi network and still no go.. even tried to disable the network temporarily as this has caused some people grief (but how do you take advantage of BD Live :)). It still freezes at that point and I give up.

I put in another BD ("Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back') and I'm able to easily play 20 minutes without any freezes, etc

So is it the disk or some compatibility issue with the PS3? It's a brand new disk from the package to the PS3. I did wipe a few fingerprints off but the disk is clean. I thought at first, damn that disk looks pretty transparent by holding up to the light but then I noticed that my JASBSB disk could be seen through as well.

If I fast forward on the problem disk and play from the point of failure seems to be fine and then it freezes again 10-15 minutes later.

Is the PS3 overheating, etc? I have it sitting on a glass shelf by itself and even had it slightly elevated by a plastic CD case as I thought maybe it was misbalanced, etc. The unit seems warm but not overly hot and as I said was able to play another BD fine tonite.

When I put in one CD that hasn't been played for a while that played fine the last time I played on another piece of equipment, it seems to fail with trying to get the disk information while playing the first 1-3 seconds and then it doesn't play at all even after ejecting the disk.

Do I have a failed piece of hardware? What's the procedure for exchanging this? I bought it at Walmart in Feb/March I believe - do I just take it back there? I did buy it on my VISA I believe so 2nd year would be covered for that but haven't even got to the end of the first year.

I really don't want to send back to Sony and wait for weeks or get a refurber. I'm glad that I didn't end up buying at FutureShop / BestBuy as they would probably give me the 20 questions and say deal with the manufacturer (because i didn't buy their extended warranty) whereas I think Walmart will most likely just hand me another one and send this back to Sony but we will see if that is what you guys think

BTW, the CD plays fine on a PC. I don't have a BD player for my PC so can't test that. CD Disk information is pulled from the Internet fine.

Thanks splinters and sirdrexl, I will check it out. I also have a 360 using the windows connect and also tversity. I dont have this problem with the xbl service and staying connected to the media servers. I guess this is going to take some work to fix!

I am brand new to the PS3 so thanks for the help!

Home Owners Insurance.....couldnt you turn that in and get new stuff:confused:

Does anyone know exactly what the 'super-white' setting is on the PS3 and do you use it?

RKRocha

The most likely culprit is your wireless router's uPnP software causing problems. First thing to try out is to disable uPnP on your router and see if that fixes your problem. It will also disable your Media Server connections as well. If that does seem to be the fix, then you should check to see if your router can be upgraded with DD-WRT firmware, otherwise you can get a new router or manually enable and disable uPnP or PS's Media Server Connectivity.

I updated my wrt54g firmware to the most recent version and that seems to have resolved my issue for now. Thanks for the help everyone.

It allows for the PS3 to output BTB and WTW video signals.

Home Owners Insurance.....couldnt you turn that in and get new stuff:confused:

That was my very first thought, right after my mini heart-attack/brain aneurysm
But after I was able to get everything up and running again,
and only minus a few dead HDMI ports, it didnt make sense to make a claim and risk a rate increase.

The biggest $ item to replace turned out to be just the 60g PS3,(that's still 90% functional) ...and getting a new 80g was less than my deductible.

Since I was planning on a second PS3 anyway, (big house with lots of rooms)
I'll keep the old 60g since its working fine for almost everything over component, digi/opt.
Maybe I'll even scrape up the $150 and have the HDMI output fixed by Sony.
...at least I have a backup unit now while waiting for repair (unlike my RROD 360 )

Here's a good article on ideal settings...does not mention super white though.

Does anyone know exactly what the 'super-white' setting is on the PS3 and do you use it?

Standard Video levels played via Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr (for BD's and SD DVD's) are 16-235
Full RGB levels range from 0-255 (the PS3's XMB/Games)

If you want to display WTW/BTB (Whiter than White, Blacker Than Black) aka levels below 16, and above 235 (0-16,235-255)
material, such as on DVE (Digital Video Essentials) calibration discs (http://www.videoessentials.com/) to calibrate your display, You will need to turn SuperWhite "On"

From the PS3 FAQ

Under Video Output Format (HDMI), what are RGB, Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr and Auto for?

RGB: A colorspace used by the PS3 to output video levels at a desired range. This colorspace is mostly designed for PC monitors.
This is the desired colorspace for use in the PS3’s XMB interface and also for video games because they are encoded in sRGB.

Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr: Another colorspace for use with displays that accept Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr input.
If your display supports it, this is the desired colorspace when watching DVD, Blu-rays or AVCHD videos.

Auto: Just like it sounds, it automatically selects between RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr colorspaces depending on the source of the video.
Selecting “Auto” will most likely result in the PS3 using RGB Levels for the XMB interface and Video Games, and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr for DVD and Blu-ray discs.

Which one should I choose?

That depends on your display, connection and calibration settings. Try using starting with “Auto” (see why above under “Auto” above).

I notice weird things happening with colors when selecting Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr or Auto. What should I do?

Try forcing the PS3 to output RGB levels to see if this eliminates the problems. Your display may not accept, or may have trouble with Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr input.

So then under Display Settings, should I have RGB set to “Full” or “Limited”?

Most TVs can experience “black crush” when “Full” is selected because the colorspace is being mapped beyond what the TV is expecting.
Start with it set at “Limited” and calibrate your TV accordingly. Use grey-scale test pattern images if necessary during calibration.

See this discussion (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=934751) for a more detailed discussion (for and against)

What about Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White? “On” or “Off”?

Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-white is used to pass Blacker-than-Black (BTB) and Peak White (WTW) levels during video playback.
Setting this to “On” should benefit your display as long as your TV accepts Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr input over HDMI.
Again, try using a test pattern DVD/BD to calibrate your display after this is turned on.

Not all displays are alike, so use common sense.
If you notice a decrease in picture quality after changing any of the above settings either try recalibrating the TV or revert back to the previous setting.

I've got my PS3 hooked up to my Onkyo 606 via HDMI along with my dish network DVR, and HD DVD player. Switching between the DVR and HD DVD player is a breeze. When I turn on the PS3 and switch the receiver to it, I get nothing. The only way I get the PS3 to come up is to power it down and reboot it back up. I've tried to have everything set up and then power the PS3 up or have the PS3 up and then switch to the correct input. But I always have to power down the PS3 and back up. Any ideas?

I was watching a blu-ray on my PS3 last night when the screen went black/blank. Audio still worked, just no video. I swapped out HDMI cables, made a connection directly to my TV, tried component connections, etc...everything I could think to troubleshoot and got nowhere. I've heard of video cards going out on XBOX 360s but never a PS3. I bought the service plan through Best Buy so replacement isn't a problem, but I've got 50 GB of music saved to the hard drive that I'm unable to retrieve. Does anyone know if Geak Squad can move the files to a new PS3? Should I try Sony support first? Please PM me if you'd had this problem before...

My brother's PS3 died the same way. It just stopped outputting video. He just sent it back to sony for repair. Hopefully Best Buy just gives you a new one though.

You can move it yourself. Take the HDD out connect it to your pc. How did you get the music files on there? You had to burn them to disk and copy to PS3 HDD or you transfered them wirelessly from your PC. I would never keep the only file I have on my PS3. So you should have the original? If its still under warranty from Sony BB is going to send it to them. They wont let others service the PS3. Whats your service plan cover?

So my PS3 is working again, but I'm having the exact same problem as you except every time I want them to handshake I have to unplug both devices, plug them back in and the PS3 does that 4:3 screen where it says its detecting an HDMI output...honestly I'm not sure if its my Onkyo 805 not "seeing" the PS3 or the PS3 not putting out an HDMI signal. I've tried multiple cables, all the HDMIs on the receiver, etc. Can anyone help with this? I have service plans on both but I want to be sure I've got the right one before I return it.

I have my PS3 hooked up to a Hitachi 42HDT55 through Sony's component cables, but the Hitachi will not output in 720P or 1080i. I went to the display settings and selected "component/d-terminal" and pressed yes to accept changes. Then I checked all the resolutions up to 1080i, accepted changes. The screen says displaying current resolution: 1080i, but after 30 seconds it goes back to 480. So what's the problem? I tried holding down the power for beeps to reset the display setting, but that didn't work.

These resolutions are supported by the Hitachi. Is it the cables, PS3 , or is it the TV? (The PS3 works fine with composite. I have a 360 that works fine over component.).

Hi, I don't know what happened but my PS3 won't let me tick the box for displaying 1080p, the screen goes black and goes back to the selection screen and the most I can get is 1080i.
I ran the hdmi cable directly to the TV ( Pioneer Pro 110 ) and it would take 1080p selection no problem but when I run it through the receiver it runs into this issue. I assume it is a setting in the receiver somewhere but have no clue.
Any help appreciated.

I think I know your problem.
Read your manual about component cable connections. Page 11http://merchant.satisfusion.com/sf/library/manuals/owners/32_42_50HDT55.pdf

Also you could try a DVI to HDMI cable. They are cheap. Look here> http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&c=61&gclid=CO2324OBqpcCFQMCagodxgvkiQ This is your best connection. You would also need an optical cable for sound. I didnt see your set having an optical input. Maybe you have a receiver you can connect it to. You may be able to use the scart cable for just the sound red and white. Im not sure when using PS3 HDMI output. I know the options for audio when using HDMI are HDMI or optical "bitstream"

I see how I can save of my game saves, but is there a way I can back up all my system settings, preferences, and PS3 Network settings (such as my wireless config and SSID, PS3 online login etc)? I know they recommend doing a system restore before sending it in to erase everything, but they don't talk about how to make a backup of all the settings and then how to restore them. Thanks!

If Sony are offering to fix it under warranty don;t mess around with home remedies. Also DVD cleaning discs should not be used on Blu-Ray drives.

This can be common in computers with VGA and one of the guns on the monitor doesn't fire. I use to have one monitor where I had to smack it once in a while to get it back. The other could be a pin not firing or seated well with your HDMI.

I wouldn't recommend smacking your projector, but you could hook up component to the projector (if it's supported) and see if it happens again. If it does, it's probably the projector. If it doesn't, could be the HDMI cable.

Hey guys, just signed up with avs,

I am having a huge problem with the ps3/zonealarm internet security suite(not free version)/ and nero mediahome,

everytime i start to scan my selected folders, (which are freaking huge, 1 terra bite external hd, and 1 500 gig internal), my internect connection starts to go on and off for periods of time. I have located the server 1-2 times on my ps3, but never saw anything show up due to my pc internet connection getting shut off and turned back on by either nero media home, or zonealarm?

i have managed to input an ip range into zonealarm, and everything showed up on ps3, but then pc would do the same thing and it is taking forever to scan my data folders i selected!

any help, or should i go ahead and go with a different program?

( btw, my new laptop, hp, running vista, was found immediatly by the ps3 and it used media player 11, which i do not like at all, but it worked tonight off of there but that computer does not have my tb hdd or my 500 gig, )

so what to do?

thanks
