rexb610 12-18-08, 04:53 PM Yesterday my ps3 internet became super slow. Even when I try to just use the browser its taking forever. My connection is showing everything is running successfully but its slow. anyone have any ideas?
Yes, me too. My wireless internet connection lately have been very slow. My online games with my friends are becoming choppy which weren't the case a few weeks ago. I've checked my wireless connection with my laptop and PCs and seems everything is fine. PS3 issues probably?
lovingdvd 12-19-08, 03:08 PM I am sending HDMI from my PS3 to a new projector. The PS3 dashboard (main menus etc) displays on the pj as 1080p60 just fine. However I noticed when I go to play Motostorm (the original) the display shows 720p60. Is this some sort of handshake issue with my pj (which does 1080p/24 and 1080p60 just fine)? Or are some games like Motostorm 720p60? Also when I was prompted to download an update to a game the prompt was send in 720p60.
In addition, when I play Blu-rays off the PS3 (through the same HDMI connection) the pj shows the signal is 1080p/24, no problem.
Now my previous pj never showed me what the connected resolution is so its possible Motostorm has always been in 720p60, in which case that's fine. But now that my new pj shows me the signal info it flagged me. I mainly want to just make sure this is not an issue with my new pj. Thanks.

Look on the back of the game box for the resolution of the game.
SirDrexl 12-19-08, 06:40 PM You'll find that most games are 720p. In order to push the polygon counts, effects, and lighting, they can't render in 1080p and get an acceptable framerate.

Thanks guys. Here's another thing that is strange. With my new projector the black level is way high on the PS3. I need to change the brightness control from 0 to -13. However this happens only when playing games - when watching Blu-Ray movies the black level of 0 is correct. Also when watching another Blu-ray player I have or cable TV the correct black level is 0. Any idea what's going on here?
Lord_Zath 12-20-08, 12:05 AM Games probably output in RGB, whereas blu-rays are in CMY. Try setting RGB to Expanded in the PS3's video settings.
Others also suggest having SuperWhite on, but I had some problems with white crushing playing Valkyria Chronicles (tons of whites in this game).

Great tip, thanks. I think that will do it. Will give it a try.
I posted this a couple of months ago but for the new members I'll post again. Has anyone experienced the problem shown in the two pictures below? I have my PS3 hooked up to the Sony HT-SS2300 receiver via hdmi and occasionaly it appears to missing some color. Usually switching inputs a couple of times on the receiver and back to the PS3 will fix it temporarly it.
It is not an hdmi cord problem as I have used 3 different ones and it has also happened w/ all combinations of display settings on the PS3. If anyone has seen or has a fix for this please let me know!
I have the same problem as you with my Sony HT-SS1300. I haven't found a fix just yet. I think the device is just faulty since there are other people who own Sony A/V receivers and do not have this problem. I will probably send it to Sony for repair or maybe I'll buy another set.

Keep in mind that if you are running your PS3 through your RX-V1800 via HDMI then your extended color range (BTB, WTW) are being clipped.
Last night I was playing Resistance. About an hour into it, my screen goes black. No audio, no errors, nothing but black screen and the PS3/controller/power button froze. I had to cut power in the back to shut it down. I let it sit for a few minutes and tried again. At this point, everything seems normal. I’m in the XMB flipping to Resistance but my PS3 didn’t recognize my game disc, so I ejected Resistance and tried another game. Same thing, it never showed up on the XMB. I ejected that disc and shut it down and tried one last time. It accepted the disc, played for a few minutes before it froze up and went black again. I shut it down and went to bed. This morning, I tried it again and it worked for an hour or so before freezing up. It seems like its overheating. It’s hard to tell, it always ran hot (80GB) and there is no indication from the lights anything is going on but normal operation. At no time did the lights blink or change color. They stayed normal (blue/green). I was going to try a BD, but feared further damage. I’m going to leave it be until I learn something. I would hate to smoke my mother board if I didn’t already.
My PS3 is 13 months old and, unfortunately, I am one-month outside the warranty and I am hoping it is something that I can do on my own and avoid sending it to Sony. Does anyone have any information that could help with this problem? Your assistance would be of great help!
The only thing I can think of is clear the dust out of it.
But I'd ring Sony and get them to repair it under warranty. Even if it is a month out, it shouldn't happen.

If you purchased it with a credit card there is a good chance that card has a Buyer Protection warranty, extending your Sony warranty to two years.

Where does the PS3 rest? Inside a cabinet, out on a table top? I have mine in a cabinet and noticed it did run hot, alittle to hot for me. I had to install some computer case fans into the cabinet to cool things down. Now my PS3 fans barely turn on and if they do the air moving out of the PS3 is barely warm. I have one pushing air in low next to the PS3 and one pulling air out above my HT reciever. I plan on adding two or three more fans just because I'm a freak and want all the heat from all the componets gone. I have no issues at all with my PS3, my wife on the other hand; that's a different story. :D
I had a couple conversations with Sony Customer Service today. They would not budge extending my warranty a month. After some bitching, I explained everything that was going on with it. The support person ruled out overheating. He said if it were overheating the thermal overload would shut it down and the red light would flash. He said my problem is with my drive somewhere given my symptoms. He wouldn't be specific though. I gave him all my information and they are sending me pre paid packaging to ship in my PS3. Looks like I'm going to have to let Sony bleed me a little.
In the past I had a PS2 that suffered from loading errors due to dust build up. Another time I had loading errors because the carriage rails that the laser moved on needed greased. Both of witch were easy fixes that just about anybody could do without sending it in. I was hoping it would be the same case for the PS3 but it don't look go.
I found posters on the Playstation boards who tore down there PS3 to replace the factory thermal compound in between the heat sink and the video processor. Apparently it dried up causing there playstations to overheat. Most of the posters were able to replace it themselves successfully alleviating the problem. The thermal compound cost about 6$ at radioshack, but if you send it in to Sony it will cost you 150$ and thats criminal. If this was my problem I would give it try.

Ventilation is not a problem, I have an open shelf TV center. The PS3 sits on top to the right of my TV all by itself.
Swell idea in the cabinet Clem, are the fans noisy at all??

Sony knows this is a problem. Just wont admit it. All my friends and I have had the same problem. Mine after 6 months. The latest issue was last week my friends PS3 would not recognize the disk. He called Sony they were happy to repair it free of charge. He has had it 13 months. It is now at their repair facility. Dont know why they denied you.

I'm going to call again today, hopefully I can get them to do the right thing like they did with your friend. I've been searching the net trying to learn what I can. I found tons of posters on all different websites who have the same common loading problem. I'd say your right about Sony knowing about it as well. Did Sony happen to mention what they did to correct this problem when you had yours fixed? Is it firmware related, or is it simple mechanical failure? Did anything have to be replaced?
Clem272 12-23-08, 01:15 PM Very silent, in fact the fan on the TV is louder. I was concerned there would be vibration noise but there isn't any. No one even knows there are fans in the cabinet until I show them. I get the question of how does the PS3 get air, and does it overheat? Can not hear them even when the TV is off. They claim they are 17 dBa and have an airflow of 44 cfm.

I see now, talking to a first tier Sony customer service rep, was a waste of time. This time around I talked to a supervisor. I expected to get some friction but, to my surprise, the guy was completely cooperative and apologetic. He extended my warranty 1 month. Thanks to all the posters, I am now able to have my PS3 repaired without cost.

Good to hear. Please let us know what Sony says is the problem (assuming they do). If this is a known hardware issue by Sony, I'm curious to know whether they are simply replacing the same parts (that will again go bad) or if they've improved something to prevent the problem from recurring.
MikeTheVike 12-26-08, 11:27 AM I've had my PS3 for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it. I haven't had a video game system since Sega Genesis! Anyway, I got Bioshock for Christmas. When I go to play it, the system tells me there is a 222mb update. When I try to update, it will work for a bit, but then throw an error.
I thought maybe it was my wireless router ( Belkin F5D9231-4 ), but according to the Wireless Router thread it should work ok. I've also been downloading demos off of the Store that are a gigabyte plus and it downloads fine. I read on there that I should disable media sharing, i found under "Network Settings" a "Media Server" option, but it is disabled already. Is that the correct thing, or is there a "media sharing" option somewhere?
Any other ideas?
Lord_Zath 12-26-08, 04:35 PM Connect it via wires if possible.
Another option is to see if you can forward the ports to your PS3. I'm not sure which ports PSN uses, so I just leave my PS3 in the DMZ.
Updating is one of the biggest pains w/the PS3. I'm not sure how it is on the 360, but waiting 25 minutes to play a game is just ludicrous!
Hi guys, I'm using my ps3 with a sony str-dg1000 receiver..I had a question about using DPLIIx to go from 5.1 to 7.1. I have this feature enabled on my receiver..but I don't believe it works with LPCM via HDMI. I have several games that are dolby digital however they show up as PCM on my receiver and thus I can't matrix in the surround back channels. How can I have the PS3 output those games as bitstream instead of LPCM? I've tried removing the LPCM audio output options which seems to work but then every time I play a bluray i have to go back and re-enable LPCM. Any suggestions?

You would need an optical cable to bitstream. Then your HDMI would be for video only. PCM is the best. 7.1 will be robbing you. PCM is what your going to get with HDMI its uncompressed sound.
BMLocal175 12-28-08, 08:58 PM Not sure if this is the right place but...
Set my PS3 to DMZ on the router because I couldn't connect to my brother on Rock Band 2 and now it works great.
Now the problem I have is my PC seems to have the same IP address as the PS3. When I look in the router settings under "Attached Devices" I see my wife's laptop and the PS3, no PC. Now when I try to open up say Roger Wilco or Teamspeak on the PC and host a server its the PS3's ip address and nobody can connect.
Now I'm not sure what a DMZ does or if this is the way it suppose to be but I wanted to check with someone because its driving me crazy. Not sure if I could easily turn DMZ on and off when I want to host servers with the PC or this is something that I will run into problems with.
By the way my brother and I tried everything with our routers before we did this and nothing worked. I'm glad the PS3 is running great but this same ip address as the PC and not being able to host servers with the pc is very annoying now.
SirDrexl 12-28-08, 09:03 PM You do NOT want the PC in the DMZ. It opens all the ports, and that leaves you vulnerable to attacks on a PC.
Change the PC's IP address right away. If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest setting up manual IP addresses. That way everything is set to a predictable address, and you'll know that the PS3 is the only computer in the DMZ.
BMLocal175 12-28-08, 09:17 PM I wouldn't know where to begin..
I followed this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/610541
to get the PS3 into DMZ..maybe the computer is setup for the DMZ maybe not I'm not sure. Can you tell what is going on here?
As far as the router is concerned its devices are the wife's laptop and PS3. They are .2 and .3 at the end of the ip address. I believe the router is .1 but when I try to host anything on the PC it says .3 which is the PS3. Chinese to me.

Yiu better re-read that site. Your PS3 should NOT be at .3
30 would be fair, tho the site mentions 100, maybe your router won't assign up that far. The DMZ then is only set for the one device (ps3 at .30)
You have to MANUALLY assign the . number on the PS3!
BMLocal175 12-30-08, 09:01 AM Yeah I checked the router again and the PS3 is the .100.
So the PS3 is in the DMZ and my PC and laptop are not?
Our firewalls on the PC and laptop will protect us even though the PS3 is in a DMZ and all ports on the router are open?
I just can't figure out why my brother or I can't host a server anymore after doing this for say Roger Wilco or Teamspeak.
Lord_Zath 12-30-08, 10:02 AM Typically the DMZ will open all non-forwarded ports to the IP you entered. So anything you haven't manually set to go to your PC will go to the PS3. That also means that yes, your other devices are still behind the firewall and protected. I'm guessing Roger Wilco and Teamspeak are for your PC? If so, you'll need to forward the ports that they use to your PC's IP address.
What kind of router you using?
Try updating the firmware on the router. Usually solves most of the problems.
I have to 2 wireless router (one main router, and the other one is a wireless AP). I have all my wired computers/laptop/Smartphones assigned a manual IP ranging from .75 - .85.
Then i have all my IP ranges (for family/friends connecting by wifi) from .130-.140.
Therefore i know whos connected to my routers.
Luvthekeys 12-31-08, 06:57 AM I have formatted a external hard drive, created folders, Music, Pictures, Games etc. I attached the external drive to the PS3 and it reads it fine. I have placed a number of mp3 in the music folder both by album and in another test by single songs. I cant seem to find a way to sort them like you can when they are on the PS3 hard drive. Is there a perferred way I should place them on the hard drive? i.e. folder for each album or should I just place them by individual song. Or will neither method allow me to sort them or do a shuffle play of all the songs on the external hard drive? Thank you for any advice.
Hey all,
I am hoping that someone here has had a similar problem to mine and was able to resolve the situation. My PS3's Disc Loader is not accepting discs. I can push a disc into the slot but it isn't doing the automatic catch it did before and I am not going to forcefully push a disc into the slot and get it stuck. To my knowledge there is nothing in the PS3 although I do have a 2 year old who may have been able to reach it but he has always been good about not touching it. I have attempted to hold the eject button down for 10seconds as instructed on another forum and heard a noise that sounded like the PS3 was attempting to eject something but nothing came out. There is no blue light on the PS3 indicating no disk in the slot. I have rebooted and powered down several times. I have called PS3 support and was instructed to send the console in for repair @ $150.00 and if they couldn't fix it or deem the damage was caused maliciously then I eat the $150.00. In doing some research there was mention of 'blu-flu', that was being seen on PS3's where the slot loader was inoperable, just a fair warning to all readers, I am hoping this isn't the case and that I can get it fixed. So that being said are there any other suggestions to repair my system? I thank you in advance for your assistance.
will1383 01-01-09, 08:47 PM Well,
I am the new, almost proud owner of a PS3. I am having two problems that I am hoping someone can at least point me in the right direction. I have updated to software version 2.53 and I have nothing saved on the system yet, short of the initial configuration stuff.
1. Internet connectivity:
I have a router between my external connection and the rest of my house. I have configured all of the network settings according to all of my other systems. the PS3 successfully joins the network, but when it attempts to check internet connectivity, I keep getting the same error:
Connection test failed: DNS Error 80710102
I've tried all the possible settings that fit within my network, but I continue to have problems. Any ideas?
2. Playing Blu-ray discs and DVDs:
I am running through and HDMI connection to a Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH Receiver. At various points during playback, the PS3 will send some sort of out-of-phase signal to the receiver, which causes the receiver to shutdown instantly. I tried using the optical out instead of the hdmi for the video, and I still had the same problem, and I sent the HDMI video signal directly to my projector. So, the problem is sound related, and when the receiver shuts down, it tells me it received a signal that's out-of-phase.
I have an upconverting DVD player which I have used through the same connections and cables, and have had no problems with it, so I am apt to say there is something wrong with the PS3.
I've tried several different discs, settings, and the like, and the problem is persistent. Has anyone ever seen this problem? Does anybody have any ideas what I should try?
Lord_Zath 01-01-09, 10:36 PM Are you sure you have the right HDMI cable? It could very well be HDCP copy protection causing your problems. Try using a different HDMI cable or using component and optical connections (or compositve/optical just to test it out). If it works, then your problem is the HDMI cable.
will1383 01-01-09, 10:42 PM hrm. would HDCP really cause that? I bought an HDMI 1.3a cable. Why would it cause issues with HDCP?
I don't have the component output connector for the PS3, so tomorrow I'll either get that or a new hdmi cable to try. But, how will I know I'm buying the right HDMI cable?
.................

Long shot, but........
I had the same issue, turned out to be the hub/switch at my AV rack.
Router > (RJ45-wired) > hub/switch > *several wired AV devices* including PS3
Simple fix is how the wiring determines if it is a HUB or SWITCH. I won't bother going into more details unless you have such a hub/switch between your router & PS3. If not, I'm sure it's something simple. Good luck. :)
will1383 01-02-09, 07:51 AM I do have a layer 3 switch between the router and the ps3.
Cable Modem -> firewall/router -> 24-port active switch -> ps3
I do have a layer 3 switch between the router and the ps3.
Cable Modem -> firewall/router -> 24-port active switch -> ps3
Again, a long shot, but here goes.....
I have a simple four port hub/switch at my AV rack. One RJ45 input slot, four RJ45 ports (devices). Making the input cable one of the ports (not using the labeled "input" port), then using the remaining three ports for the devices including the PS3, fixed my DNS issues. Never even a hiccup since.
I only have three AV devices that require Internet access from this hub/switch so it was no problem, and all three function as before wired this way. Whether using the labeled "input" port makes the device a hub or switch, I dunno.
So if your switch uses an "input" port, try puting your input cable as just one of your 24 port devices, see if that solves it.
Worth a shot. Hopefully it wouldn't mess up your other devices on the switch.
maingon 01-02-09, 10:26 AM I am having a issue that just started out of the blue last night....
We were watching a bluray movie last night and about half way through the movie just froze, I kept trying to get it playing, put disc in and it would show up, you would see the title of the movie and the icon, and it would go like its loading black screen and it would either sit at a black screen with the loading icon at the top right or it would bring me back with a error message. I tried other blurays and games couldn't get it working, I could get the bluray to where i would see the bluray loading screen. So i quit trying and tried again in 20 minutes
I was able to get to the movie menu, and was able to get the movie to play finally but as it seemed like when i would skip to a different screen it would freeze up.
So i tried to play MGS. Sometimes it would show up on the Playstation "dashboard" with the title of the game, but wouldn't load. I would get ps3 error 80010514 sometimes.
Then I would get MGS to load , I could load my game and i would be able to play the game where I saved it, but if I went into the pause menu for too long i would get a symbol in MGS with the disc and a question mark in it and the game would just sit there.
What kind of problem does this sound like? PS3 going bad? laser going bad? dust in disc tray? My ps3 has acted perfect never has froze before. I got it last christmas so I had it one year, so its probably out of warranty. I hear its a 150 to get the ps3 repaired. Has anyone ever been able to get the cost waived or able to get them to take off the repair cost? Cause I dont have 150 bucks to spend on the ps3 right now.
Lord_Zath 01-02-09, 10:54 AM hrm. would HDCP really cause that? I bought an HDMI 1.3a cable. Why would it cause issues with HDCP?
I don't have the component output connector for the PS3, so tomorrow I'll either get that or a new hdmi cable to try. But, how will I know I'm buying the right HDMI cable?
Don't know as I never had it done to me. That's why I suggested using even the standard composite video connector for testing purposes. If it works with that, then it's either the HDMI cable or video processor on the ps3.
You can get a cheap HDMI cable from monoprice that should work just fine (all mine are from monoprice)

That's where I got my current HDMI cable. :( Ok. I'll run to best buy and grab the PS3 component cable, and try that tonight... If I still have the same problem using the optical sound out and the component video out, then it's gotta be something internal to the PS3, and if that's the case, I really don't know what to do about it...
Hey all,
I am hoping that someone here has had a similar problem to mine and was able to resolve the situation.
Lord_Zath 01-02-09, 03:03 PM If you're going to have to send in the machine (final option), then the second to last final option would be to take a crap game disk or DVD that you could care less about potentially losing and give it a try. The loader might be jammed/caught on something, and this could dislodge it...
Will - there's no need to blow another $30 on component cables if you're eventually going to do HDMI anyway. Just try the included composite yellow cable if you can. After re-reading your post, one question - you tried using optical for AUDIO into your receiver, right? If so, then you could also try checking your optical cable for kinks/knicks/etc, as optical cables are super fragile. There could also be dust on either end of the connector or either of the ports on the ps3/receiver.

Thanks for the response. ya, I went to BB and decided it was dumb to buy another cable for $30 just to test. I have been using an HDMI cable from monoprice (a 3ft, 1.3a cable).
I did pull an optical cable from my other setup in the house (which I know functions like a champ) and changed the sound output to that, and the video output to the HDMI. I then sent the HDMI signal directly to my projector while sending the optical audio out to the Receiver. This resulted in the same problem.
I have 3 other HDMI cables laying around, and changed them all out to see if it was the cable - including using them on a known working upconverting DVD player to make sure the cable was good. But after trying the optical out and STILL having the same problem, I became suspect of the player. The player is brand new, and I had this problem right from the get-go...
What's more is that playing games works fine, lol. It's just the video discs that are giving me fits.
I'll try the dust check tonight, but I am simply running out of ideas. Any others short of buying a new one or returning this one (I bought it online, so returning isn't trival)? None of my friends have BD players, so I can't borrow one of their players to see if its actually the discs, but I'm pretty sure it isn't.
Lord_Zath 01-02-09, 11:00 PM call up Sony and see about a warranty repair?
or return it to your online retailer (like you said, those are a PITA to return)
I am having a issue that just started out of the blue last night....
Give Sony a call. My PS3 started doing the same exact thing just before Christmas. Sony told me it's a failure in the BR drive. I learned doing searches it's a common failure. Sony would never admit to that though even though it's all over there boards. My 80 GB was 1 month over warranty when it crapped out, but Sony came through and agreed to extend my coverage one month. I'm still waiting for the shipping package to arrive. Mail is always a little slow around Christmas and I'm missing it bad! I got all these great BRD and games for Christmas and no playstation. Oh well!
This is the first time I have ever dealt with Sony customer service so you may already know this. When you call, don't wast to much of your time with Sony 's 1st tier customer representatives. All there going to tell you is your out of luck. Ask to talk to a supervisor. It's a pain in the arse to have to lose it for a month, but you shouldn't have to pay for it. Especially after only one year of use.
Good Luck and Happy New Year !!

Do you need to manually program the input source to use optical/coax instead of the L/R for audio did you?
It baffled me for 15 mins while i was setting up my PS3 to my onkyo receiver. It turns out, on my Onkyo i have to enable optical/coax on my AVR setup menu to be able to use the audio.
Something to consider.

This happens on any discs? BD, DVD, CD's and Games? It seems too me that is the problem.
Im curious, which version of PS3 do you have?
Did you have your reciept though?
Yes I have it. Did you lose your receipt or did you never receive it? If you never recieved it, hopefully the purchaser used a credit card and still has the receipt or can track it down. Any chance it was purchased at BB? They will reprint a receipt for you if you know the date of purchase.

yeah got it as a gift, and my parents think they paid with check or cash. I dont have the reciept so most likely I will be paying the 150 bucks. I have had the red ring of death on my 360 and had almost the same problem where the system wouldnt read the disc, and never need the receipt.

What a bummer!
If they remember where they got it from, maybe the store can dig up a duplicate Receipt. It's common for stores like BB to keep receipt records over a year.
The other thing I would try is call Sony. Explain things and maybe they will help you out. They know about this problem, Talk to a supervisor though. It's worth a try at this point. I hope your able to get it worked out.

Yeah, I agree, definitely call Sony. Worse they can say is NO and you are back to where you think you are anyway: spending $150 to fix it.
I suppose by the serial number alone Sony could tell when it was built? This way, if it was built less than a year ago, obviously you haven't owned it for over a year. :)
But then, maybe it sat in a warehouse for 8 months, who knows.
Lesson learned: use a credit card as you have a built in receipt AND most credit cards give free extended warranties for up to one year (making a PS3 purchase a 2 year warranty period). Some restrictions apply, see details, blah......blah....blah...... :D
well, my 60gig ps3, that i purchased in july of '07 is starting to have problems. playing ghwt, it the audio freezes (or gets stuck in a loop), and then the video freezes; sometimes the bluray discs show as corrupted data in the xmb, sometimes they show up in the video and game menus. sometimes the disc just perpetually loads with the circle spinning in the top right hand corner of the screen. i am thinking this is the bluray drive, so i have called sony. they just forwarded me the link to the online repair request, which i did, and so now i await the shipping instructions email (i hope they will send me a box, and that i wont have to pack and double box the thing myself). i am on the hook for $149, which with tax jumps up to $161.29
it would be a bummer at anytime, but to have this happen post-xmas, when i had some time and had just been bitten by the rhythm game bug is tough. c'est la vie. hopefully this will be an expedient, efficient, and effective affair...
Josh10985 01-04-09, 02:09 PM I posted this in the speaker forum and didnt get any answers...
Setup
2 F3 Floorspeakers
C3 Center
HDMI - Onkyo 606
HDMI - PS3
HDMI out to LG4770 TV
OLD OLD sony sub... WMSP85
I dont notice this until I started playing games, I have my PC streaming all my music files over and can have them playing really loud with no issues. I got Residence 2 for xmas and i have it around 40 or so on the volume. It tends to make a crackle or pop at certain times in the game and I can not figure out why..
I have my speakers set up as..
SUB : Yes
Front: 80HZ
Center: 120hz
LFE: 80hz
Not sure what is going on? If its a problem with my AV Reciever i have a few days left to return it before my 30 day is up.. But it just happens playing PS3 games from what I can tell..
Any Ideas?
------------
I messed with it again tonight and tried a few things... I hooked my PS3 directly up to my TV with the HDMI cable.. It did not have this sound... then I turned up the microphone speech and it was awful... Every time someone talks it crackles like crazy.. So this eliminates my speakers / reciever from having any problems. I then tried a different HDMI cable and input and had the same results. So I am guessing this is a game issue.. I do not have a blue tooth mic... Dont know if its required but i am sure it should not make this noise.
-----
I ordered a new game and returned my old one through Amazon... The exact same thing is happening... The sound just distorts and pops at certain times.. Any other ideas? I have totally bypassed the AV system by going directly to my tv via HDMI
257Tony 01-04-09, 03:00 PM Try running the audio via optical or analog to your AVR to see if there is a problem with the console and HDMI audio, of course you will need to use either composite or component cables to try the analog audio, but its worth a shot.
Lord_Zath 01-04-09, 04:00 PM crackle like that could be from audio processing problems. Is your PS3 set to output PCM, oe Doby/DTS? If PCM, then it's the PS3's processor having problems. If it's Dolby/DTS, it's the receiver.
And +1 to the post about trying to use optical cable. If optical cable works (outputs in Dolby/DTS or PCM 2.0), then it's the HDMI cable that is the culprit.
Another thought - is the HDMI cable amongst a bunch of power cables? Power cables can disrupt an audio/video signal...
Josh10985 01-04-09, 04:03 PM I hooked it up with the av cable that came with the ps3 and did not hear anything... I ran the av cable to the aux port on my AV receiver and played the game with the volume cranked... Sounded perfect... So what do i do?
Josh10985 01-04-09, 04:16 PM I looked at the sound output and it has the PCM and DTS both checked... a bunch of the PCM boxes are checked and grayed out.. the only thing that's not checked is AAC
This problem happened just hooking the PS3 up to my TV via HDMI, bypassing the AV receiver, so no way it could be the receiver. I just got the Ps3 4 or 5 months back.. I found my reciept (had it in my MGS4 case) and its so faded i cant read anything on it... great! Does best buy keep records so they can reprint a copy for me?
Got it on 8/22.. Found my CC purchase on my bank account.. but receipt is unreadable :(
Lord_Zath 01-04-09, 04:59 PM best buy should keep the receipt in its system.
Have you tried using a different HDMI cable? It could be the cable if the standard RCA white and red audio worked fine on the ps3...
257Tony 01-04-09, 05:03 PM Yeah, try a different cable and if that doesn't do it then its a problem with the PS3's audio decoder I guess. Take it back to BB along and see what they'll do for you, although since its been past 3 months they will most likely have you deal directly with Sony.
Lord_Zath 01-04-09, 05:30 PM if bb does turn you to Sony, see if they can at least reprint your receipt.
Josh10985 01-04-09, 07:10 PM Yea i tried another HDMI cable and it did the same exact thing.. . And it happens when people talk on the headset.. it makes a poping sound.. I thought it didnt happen listening to music but it does have a little static..
I plugged the AV cables back up instead of the HDMI and I do get the popping noise when people talk on the headset and explosions happen.. So it isn't a hdmi only issue. I guess the sound in general is screwed up...
gnolivos 01-04-09, 09:19 PM Josh:
I have the same problem of static with my PS3 and the game Battlefield 'Bad Company'. I actually posted about it 2 weeks back or so, in this thread. I never got a response, but I did reserahc a lot on the net and found that the problem is rather common for several people. Seems not everyone has the issue, but certainly a lot of people do. If you google 'PS3 crackle sound' you will come up with a lot of hits. I thought it was Bad COmpany game only, but I see it is also affecting other games. For me, *only* BadCopany causes the issue. I can watch BluRay movies, Music, etc and have ZERO issues with sound. But BC kills it!
Josh10985 01-04-09, 10:51 PM I hate that.... hah now after looking at all the links on google i wander if sending it in will even fix the problem..
gnolivos 01-05-09, 06:20 AM It won't.

Josh10985 01-05-09, 11:03 AM well then hopefully they will release a new firmware update to fix this problem..
I would like to use my PS3 for both Blu-ray movies and Games as most here use it for but my 52XBR6 allows GAME Mode for each of its input jacks and not settings. So, if I turn on Game mode I wouldn't want to watch movies with it which means I would have to go all the way into the buried menu to turn it back off. Does the XBR6, since its a Sony, know to automatically switch game mode off if I'm watching movies instead of playing games?

Does your TV have several MEMORY settings? Depending on your TV's capabilities you could have different settings for each Memory including things like Game Mode, some TV's allow for each Input to have different settings (sounds like yours does).
- Memory 1 = TV/Movies
- Memory 2 = Game Mode
Another option (if available) would be to set DEFAULT settings where upon power ON the TV goes to it's "default" settings and inputs. So a simple power cycle removes the Game Mode.
Thanks Toby but the XBR6 automatically remembers the settings but it's for each input. Since the PS3 uses just ONE input to the TV, you have to choose to have the Game mode turned on or off. I was hoping that since both products are made by Sony that their engineers would be smart enough to make their PS3 and XBR6 switch that on or off automatically depending on if you're watching a movie or playing a game.

You give far too much credit for CE engineers and designers! :p
Memory settings won't help either?

How would it possibly know?
Well, actually they could make it so that the mode could be set for each resolution/framerate, so that it could be turned off for 1080p/24 (movies) and 1080i/60 (TV), but on for 720p/60 and 1080p/60.

They could also send a signal from the PS3 to the XBR6 so that it would know. All you need is a few bits of data string for that to happen. When you're using other manufacturer's devices, it would just be ignored but on Sony's it would be understood.
will1383 01-07-09, 07:56 AM Just a quick update. After quite a bit of testing, and even buying another PS3 to see if that was the problem, I have found that one of my new surround sound speakers has a short in it, so I will be getting that taken care of.
So, all in all, there is no problem with my PS3. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Josh10985 01-07-09, 09:35 PM Is there any way to downgrade to the last version on the PS3? I don't remember having this issue before the new version came out... I am now noticing the static while streaming music from my pc.. This sucks and now i wish i would have got a 360
You can't downgrade the firmwares on the PS3.
natew2000 01-09-09, 09:38 AM When playing games the audio is fine but when playing standard DVDs the audio output is much lower to the point I have to turn my reciever way up. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Lord_Zath 01-09-09, 02:16 PM I have the same problem. I don't think there's anything wrong with the setup - just the way the media is encoded probably.
lovingdvd 01-09-09, 03:26 PM What is the proper way to turn off PS3 w/o using a controller? For instance sometimes I turn my display off and then realize I forgot to turn off the PS3. I don't want to turn the display back on just to navigate with the controller to turn it off...
So can I just rest my finger on the software power switch on the front of the PS3 until it beeps once, and then let go? Or am I suppose to hold it until it beeps twice? I tried it last night until it beeped twice but then my controller wouldn't sync the next time I tried to turn it on with the PS3 button (so I subsequently had to turn the power switch on the PS3 off and on again to get things going). Thanks!

MrXpress 01-10-09, 05:10 PM I don't know if this has been asked, but does using the Wifi increase the heat and/or power consumption very much? My 60GB has entered in 'will never shut up' mode, so I'd happily switch to a wired connection if it meant the unit ran a little cooler.

can't hurt. Wifi does use a nice chunk of energy, but most of the energy usage is on the CPU and PS2 EE chip inside. Best bet to get the fan to slow down would be to take apart the ps3 and replace the thermal paste linking the CPU to the heat sink with a higher quality one. Not for the faint of heart, but if you've done this on a PC, it's the same thing on a ps3.

I was helping a friend (big photography buff) network her PS3 to her computer via WMP. All works fine with sharing music, video and photos. PS3 sees all files and folders no problem.
But she uses a photo organizing & editing program called "Picasso". WMP picks up the pics in the Picasso folder no problem. Each folder and file (.jpg pic) are also seen by the PS3. But she gets the "unsupported data" when she goes to view the pic on the PS3. If she copies the pics to the simple My Pictures folder they display fine.
My guess is that the Picasso photo editing program is manipulating the .jpg's in a manner which the PS3 does not like. Any ideas on settings (WMP, computer, Picasso, PS3) to get around this?
She'll just move all completed (edited) photos to My Pictures as needed, but it seems like a redundant extra task if it can be avoided.
Thanks. :)
Lord_Zath 01-11-09, 10:49 AM It could be that there's too many folders you're going through, and x-ferring them to My Pictures is higher up on the directory structure.
maximuslcd 01-11-09, 11:29 AM I recently installed a new linksys wrt54g2 wifi router, everything works great. I got my son a ps3 for christmas, his room is upstairs approx 50' from the office, when i first got his ps3 online it had a signal strength of 50 to 70 % which was fine he was able to play online with no problems. Last night he couldnt get online and when I checked the signal strength was 5%....what would cause this? It's on channel 6. I looked in my router and saw the channel but didnt see anyway to change it to a diff channel and dont know if that would even help?
kciaccio 01-11-09, 11:32 AM If it were me I would just do a reset on the router(push the tiny button on the router) and set up again.
Are you securing your router?
Lord_Zath 01-11-09, 11:46 AM Could also be a neighbor has set up a router on the same channel. Try changing the router's channel.
Could also be a neighbor has set up a router on the same channel. Try changing the router's channel.
Agreed, quite possible. Even a cordless phone or appliance can cause similar issues.
maxim: ch 6 is the default for all routers, so it's usually the most crowded ch. If you have a WiFi computer handy try a "see all available networks", hopefully this list of networks will give you the ch # and signal strength of each network. Choose a ch on your router accordingly, offering the least interference with surrounding ch's.
I'm surprised your router does not offer a simple drop down menu to select ch's 1 thru 11.
Also try just unplugging the router for a minute, plug it back in.
This will save you from having to re-setup the entire router configuration (assuming it works). :)
splinters 01-11-09, 06:56 PM I should clarify, you should only use 3 channels: 1, 6, and 11 on 802.11b/g/n routers that use 2.4Ghz. Those are the only three non-overlapping channels. So if 6 doesn't work, try 1 or 11, but don't use any other ones as they will have interference issues with two of 3 channels.

Ummm.....did you read the manual? ;)
The manual for your WRT54G2 shows how to change channels (chapter 3, page 10)
http://www.cdromshop.com/cdshop/user-manual.et/p.745883584093.pdf
I'm no IT/networking person but I've yet to see any WiFi G router that does not offer a way to change it's channel as channel overlap and frequency interference are quite common problems.
But it is pointless to just start randomly changing channels until you know what the existing channels are around you. From a computer when you choose View Available Networks this will often show signal strength and channel #'s of those existing signals near you.
If your View Available Networks does not show channel numbers you can DL a free program like NetStumbler to see this info.

Correct, you may not need to change the ch. On the other hand a ch change could greatly increase the signal strength. Changing my ch from 6 (default) to 11 resulted in a 20% increase in signal strength.
You could just change the ch's on the router (as suggested, 1 and 6 and 11 are your best choices) then see what signal strength the PS3 is getting, pick the strongest one and stay on that ch. Keep in mind: with every ch change on the router your PS3 will disconnect, then should re-log back onto your router in 30 seconds.

bobalot58 01-12-09, 03:10 PM my playstation3 works fine on my HD tv but as soon as i plug it into a non HD tv the screen just goes blank i know one way of fixing this problem that requires a HD tv and that is to go into settings and change from 1080p to.... depending on the other tv but i was woundering if there was another way i could change this without having to use the HD tv.

Xebec01 01-12-09, 04:06 PM I'm using an HDMI cable to connect my new PS3 to my Pioneer 1018 receiver. The receiver is connected to my Sony TV via HD. (I don't remember the model of the TV atm, but it is a rear projection LCD, and it is about 4 yrs old.)
When switching from the main menu of the PS3 to a game (Call of Duty 4 is a good example), the receiver loses HDMI signal from the PS3. It will continue to try to reconnect, but it is not able to. If I switch to a different input on the receiver and then switch back to the PS3, the handshaking will complete and I will get picture and sound.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a receiver issue, or can I adjust a PS3 setting to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a standard HDCP handshaking issue. The workaround you found is probably the easiest. The other one is to unplug the HDMI cable to the tv and reconnect it to force a re-handshake.
Possible resolutions would be firmware upgrades to your AVR and/or TV assuming you already have the latest firmware for your ps3.

Well, a week and a half through owning a PS3 - ive had 2 freezing issues already. Running 2.53 f/w and it happened when i played whether online/offline R2 or Army of 2. Unit is lying down with plenty of space from the side for intake and back for exhaust.
Any ideas? I'll replace it with another unit if need be. I just want to get some ideas before i exchange it.
maximuslcd 01-15-09, 08:59 AM well I decided to try and go in and change the channel on my wrt54g2, which was discussed earlier on this page. I finally unplugged the router, plugged it back in, now the power light is flashing and wont stop...I followed the directions through the online instruction manual...mine came with no book, still the light is flashing.
I tried the reset button on the back of the router..nothing..couldnt even access the router to "restore factory defaults" I boxed it up and will return it today and get another, I'm guessing the same one unless someone can recomend a more powerful one that gets batter range? must be a G though I dont wanna mess with an N

I just used the WEP option for easy set up.

You don't have to do a "setup", you just need to get into the Admin Settings.
It's a simple Login and PW. PW = Admin is often the default.
It must be in the manual. :)

I don't have any freezing issues with Army of 2 offline. I haven't played AO2 online yet. If I get a chance, I'll do it tonight. Otherwise, I won't be able to do it until next week. Are those the only two games that you have freezing issues with?

Bleh, WPS (Wifi Protected Setup) is not what you want to look for. I would recommend going through the manual: WRT54G2 Manual (http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/WRT54G2_V10_UG_C+web,0.pdf). Go to page 10 and in the wireless settings area, the second drop box shows the channel and frequency. Change it to 1 or 11 and click save and you should be set.
As for the reset, you can hold down the reset button while you unplug and replug in the power and that should do a hard reset, but if you've returned it already, that's not a problem.
As for N vs. G, it's not a big deal, N is backwards compatible so you can always have it max out at 54Mbps and keep it in "g-only" mode.

Yup. Although they're the only 2 current games i have. I just bought GT5 and Time crisis 4 so ill see if it freezes then. But both freezing occured having played the ps3 for 2.5+ hrs straight.
I just exchanged it with a brand new one from BB since im still within my 30 day exchange.

Nadine 1950 01-17-09, 02:07 PM New B here. Thought one of you experienced users may have some insight. Have a new Sony XBR6 HDTV and hooked it to my new PS3 (Mdl# CECHL01) w HDMI both ways. Get a stunning picture. I have set the TV for automatic setup for HDMI from the PS3 and have set the TV audio to its speakers and the PS3 sounds to HDMI auto setup. What occurs is this: about 4 times out of 5 when I turn on the PS3 I get no muscial greeting when the X-Bar menu thing comes on screen. If there is no greeting there is no audio on games, BD or DVD. If the musical greeting does occur then I have audio on games, BD and DVD. I have reformatted twice, changed HDMI cables three times, tried AVI hook up, all with the same results. Any ideas?
Thanks.
SirDrexl 01-17-09, 02:30 PM The only thing I would know to do is maybe change it from that "auto" setup. Set it to stereo output (check off 44.1 and 48khz, uncheck everything else) on the PS3 and select stereo input on the TV (I'm assuming you don't have a set of surround speakers).
If that doesn't work, you can use optical or analog out from the PS3. HDMI doesn't really matter, as its main advantage (besides having just one cable) is to provide advanced audio in a multichannel setup.
Nadine 1950 01-17-09, 03:01 PM Thanks. I have already tried the analog route - same audio results.
I'll recheck the TV audio settings again.

Now when I turn it on, I get the home screen and that works, but when I go to play a movie it goes all black and that's it..:( I tried 4 different movies too, the same thing (Black screen). :(Has this happened to anyone else? If so what did you do to rectify the problem.. Why does the screen go all black.. Any insight would be appreciated.. Thanks in advance..
Lord_Zath 01-18-09, 01:40 PM Have you tried backing up the hard drive and then formatting? Give that a try...
mulletdude 01-19-09, 07:18 AM I've read most of this thread, but I can't seem to find a problem quite like mine.
My currently set up is the first gen 60gb ps3's (full backwards compatibility w/ ps2 games) and the DELL 2407WFP monitor. I have a HDMI to DVI cable (not an adapter) and was using the PS3 to plug into the DVI port on my monitor with no problems going to full 1080p.
The problem I ran into is that it no longer works. I would play ps3 for a while, then unplug it from my monitor and plug my computer back into the DVI port. Upon doing this one time, though, the monitor displays what I like to call, "Bloody Snow". It's like the snow on the cable channels you don't get, except red, orange, and yellow. Also, every 4-6 seconds the screen flashes solid red.
I am unable to test it on a different monitor, but I know the cable is good because I plug it into my laptop's HDMI out and it works fine. I have attempted the sony r.e.p.a.i.r. thing, but it didn't do anything.
I want to make a note of that it WAS working perfectly before, and now it's not. I'm hoping maybe I can get a good answer from you guys, because this thing is out of warranty and I don't even want to know how much it's gonna cost for sony to repair this.
hack_mole 01-19-09, 02:56 PM Have you tried backing up the hard drive and then formatting? Give that a try...
To further what he says. There is a backup option on the menu where you can backup your game saves and personal data to an external drive etc.. You will lose games you bought from PSN, but you can re-download them once you get your drive back in working order from PSN.
Hope this helps,
Mike
Sorry for asking about things that have been discussed over and over again, but I just can’t get hold of all these settings. Sorry also if you see this post “again”, because I’ve posted this same message to few different forums/groups hoping to get decent answers from at least one of them.
I have following setup:
PS3 (1080p over HDMI. Games and BR/DVD) and PC (1080p over HDMI. HD and lower quality video) connected to Denon AVR-1909, which is connected to Sony KDL-40W4000 with HDMI.
I need help to get all necessary settings right to get maximum picture quality through the chain. Brightness, color temperature etc. are just matters of opinion, so let’s not concentrate to those. What I’m interested in is getting “all colors” from PS3/PC to TV.
At the moment my settings are:
PS3:
BD/DVD Video output format :Y Cb Cr
RGB Range: Full (1)
Y Cb Cr Super white: On
1909:
Color space: Y Cb Cr (2)
RGB Range: Enhanced (3)
W4000:
Colour space: standard (4)
1) About everyone everywhere is writing that this should be set to “limited”. I haven’t fully understood why. Don’t I then loose 0-15 and 236-255 ranges? And if I set this to “limited”, should I then set 1909 to “normal”, or does it matter?
2) If I set this to Y Cb Cr, and PS3/PC feeds RGB to 1909 (PS3 games for example), what happens? Does denon somehow still use the Y Cb Cr?
3) I thought this would be simple. Excerpt from 1909 manual:
Normal: Use video range from 16 (black) to 235 (white).
Enhanced: Use video range from 0 (black) to 255 (white). Use this setting to avoid black washout.
So I think “Of course I use enhanced. If input doesn’t have 0-15 and 236-255 ranges, then it doesn’t, but what harm could this so” But then I saw someone write like this in AVSForum: The normal vs. enhanced setting for RGB should be set to "normal" for most video sources. Then, it should do video levels and properly pass WTW/BTB. If you set it to "enhanced" then there is no BTB or WTW. How come there is no BTB and WTW (what I think are 0-15 and 236-255), when I just selected the option that includes those?
4) Just to be sure: Colour space standard/wide is not 16-235/0-255 seection? I do get 0-255 with standard, if I just feed 0-255 to the tv?
Please, spend little time and energy and explain me what and why should I do with all these options.
gnolivos 01-22-09, 12:59 PM Set to NORMAL everywhere, not enhanced. Then grab a THX test screen from any THX compliant DVD (Star Wars, etc) and confirm that you *can* see the shadow behind the THX logo. If so, then you're all set, if not, you've got a problem somewhere along the chain of equipment!

Do you have any wired peripherals plugged in? They take over the first controller ports, so the wireless controller gets bumped to the next available (for example, port 4 if you have 3 wired controllers). While the XMB apparently works with the controller assigned to any port, some games require port 1. Check the "Accessory Settings" to see where the controller is assigned.
If this is the case, you'll have to change the port every time you turn it on, or unplug the wired devices.

treepop 01-22-09, 10:47 PM PS3 w/ Denon 1709
Hey guys, I just got my system setup (minus the pa-120 sub coming next week). I ran audysee all 7 tests and said to omit the sub and it sounded great on the radio....huge change....
I went to walmart and bought myself an optical cable for my ps3 to hook through my receiver and I noticed something odd. When I click left or right after sitting still for a moment no sound will play!...like it takes me moving around in the menu system a while before it starts playing the clicks.....could I have got dirt on the optical cable? The best way to describe the problem...is that it seems the receiever needs to "wake up" after being inactive on the ps3 menu to long....and the first few notes don't play....but it can be inactive only like 5 seconds and then it will have to "wake up" again....thats the best way to describe the sound delay....only at first and only after I don't move a bit
Also, what does my denon 1709 support in the optical settings section. I know dolby 5.1, and dts 5.1, but what about aac and the other 2 available pcm options? I only selected dolby 5.1 and dts 5.1 and aac(I just assumed it did it)
THANKS SO MUCH!

tcramer 01-23-09, 02:22 PM Thanks for your input guys. I ended up formatting my hard drive into 2 partitions, with one as FAT 32 just for files I want on the PS3. Thanks again. On another note, I can't believe how well it actually does reconize facial expressions and age groups. Had a lot of trouble picking out groups of people though.

If you go to the Photo Gallery App and select triangle -> copy it asks that you insert storage media for the copy. I have all my photos on a MediaTomb DLNA server on my network. I can see them just fine under Photo -> MediaTomb but can't seem to get to the network drive under the Photo Gallery App.
GzrGlide 01-24-09, 02:31 PM I've posted this same question in another forum, but thought I'd try it here too.
I tried the search function for this problem, but didn't come up with anything.
Our PS3 won't recognize the GT5P disc anymore. It looks like it's just this one game. Other games work fine, BD work fine and all the saved info etc is still on the pS3. The disk looks ok ( no scratches or anything ). The GT5P logo doesn't even show up on the initial PS3 screen ( XMB ? ).
I've also turned the PS3 off at the main power switch for an hour, but that didn't help either.
Anyone else seen this before. Is there a setting that I'm missing somewhere? I'm new to the whole gaming scene, so sorry if the question seems lame.
I finally get to the "S" class, and after a few days it stopped working. AHHHH!!!!
Hoping I don't have to replace the disk.
System software is v2.42.
Thanks for any help.

I use TVersity for PS3 streaming. I find it handles (transcodes) more video formats and seems to run smoother than WMP11 in my experience.

GzrGlide 01-25-09, 11:04 AM Our PS3 won't recognize the GT5P disc anymore. It looks like it's just this one game. Other games work fine, BD work fine and all the saved info etc is still on the pS3. The disk looks ok ( no scratches or anything ). The GT5P logo doesn't even show up on the initial PS3 screen ( XMB ? ).
Fixed! The disk had a small crack coming from the center hole. Could barely see it. Got another GT5P disk, and I'm back in business.

Trooper Thorn 01-26-09, 07:49 AM I got a 40GB PS3 hooked up to my Olevia 232V S12. The HDMI frequently is out of sync, lagging behind the picture very noticeably. Is there anything I can do? I have tried running the RCA cables for the audio, and it works fine through my surround sound, however when plugged into the audio inputs for the HDMI input I get no sound.
Can anybody help with this? I have tried my friend's brand new 80GB and have had no lag issues with that.
No ideas about the audio lag?
I'm trying to coinfgure my home setup so my PS3 can play .wma files loaded on my Escient MX111 Fireball. So far, I haven't been able to make it work. I use Windows (Vista) Media Player 11 to do the networking. WMP 11 can detect both the Escient and the PS3. The PS3 detects and accesses both my computer and the Escient. The PS3 will play .wma files located on my computer. I can copy copy .wma files to the Escient. However, when I try to play .wma files on the Escient, the PS3 says that the file is an unsupported format. When I click on the file Information feature on the PS3, it reports no information for the codec. That is, it just reports "--".
Its odd as the PS3 will play the same .wma file just fine when located on my computer. Anyone know what the problem (and solution) is? Is there some additional file on my compute which the PS3 is accessing to determine the file type which is not being transferred to the Escient? When I look at the Escient, all the files retain their .wma extension, so I don't understand why the PS3 will not recognize them as .wma files.
my ps3's drive (game disc) has started making a droning noise when in use for a while, I usually only notice it when I quit a game.
I hope its not an early indicator of imminent failure
Hello everyone! I have the first generation PS3 and updated to the new firmware a few days ago. Here is my problem. I was playing a SACD when it locked up 1/2 way in. So I restarted it and got a screeching noise from the speakers. I ejected it powered the system off and on and again it wouldn't play just a screeching noise. I then tried a DVD-A and the same thing! I tried 4-5 SACD's and DVD-A's and all did the same thing. Has anyone else had the same problem with SACD and DVDA playback with the new update?
iamkoza 01-26-09, 07:43 PM minor question that has been answered, however after numerous searches I can't find the thread that deals with it.
I have a Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver. A 5.1 system is hooked up to the receiver. I have ps3 is sending audio and video via hdmi. I have the ps3 sound options set to auto. When I call up the video playback info (hitting select) some blu-ray's with a 6.1 or 7.1 track show as 6.1 or 7.1 I'm assuming that this means the ps3 is sending 6.1 or 7.1 to my receiver. My question is, am I losing any sound by doing this with a 5.1 system?
I would manually erase the 7.1 options from the sound settings, however it seems to screw up everything when I don't leave it on auto.

The select screen is showing you the number of channels in the track, not necessarily what is being output. If the PS3 is set for 5.1 output, it downmixes the back surrounds into the "regular" surrounds. You don't lose sounds; they're just mixed differently.
I would go into the audio options of the PS3 and make sure that the 7.1 options are not checked off. Depending on how your receiver is set up, you may be sending a 7.1 signal to it, which might mean you'd lose the back surround sounds. If set up correctly, the receiver would do the downmixing, but it may be easier to just set it in the PS3.

Do you have the auto- controller shut down option on? Maybe its just the controller turning off on you...

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure what it's set on....I'll check it out, but I think it's the PS3 itself as the controller light stays on and I can still hear beeping if I push the controlller buttons, the PS3 doesn't respond and I have to shut it down from the front button.

My only issue with going in to the ps3 menu to manually check off 7.1 is it screws up my other games. IE, dolby digital doesn't work on rock band unless I have sound options set to auto.

Return it for a replacement.
Degenerazn 02-06-09, 04:09 PM I want to get into the habit of backing up my PS3 saves every month or so. Is there an easier way to backup all your game saves at once without doing them each individually and without having to do a whole system backup?
Nadine 1950 02-07-09, 10:11 AM I agree with gooki. My PS3's audio was also intermittent. No amount of reformatting, different HDMI cables, analog cables, etc worked. Finally had to send it in for repair to the El Paso facility after talking to one of their tech guys. I suggest calling these guys while your unit is still under warranty.
I am having a discussion with a guy who is telling me that the PS3 does not apply enhancement (noise filters, upscaling) to streamed video, only locally stored content. He's wrong, but I need proof other than my own eyes! Can someone help with a link or something?
Thanks.

I don't know about noise filters. However, if the video is lower than the output resolution, and it is shown full-screen (at least in one dimension), by definition it is being upscaled.
By "in one dimension," I mean that if you have something that's a different aspect ratio like 2.40:1, it's not going to fill the screen vertically, but it will fill it horizontally.
^^ Yep, got that, but thanks for the reply :)
Was really after something (or someone) that states what is applicable to sreamed video...
Jamdonutz 02-18-09, 06:21 PM Hi Everyone
Have tried teh search without luck and I am not sure where this question should go, have posted in the AVR section as well, but I am having a rather annoying problem with my Subwoofer setup when using teh PS3 that I can't seem to figure out.
Denon AVR-789 + Sony PS3 + Sony Bravia LCD all hooked up via HDMI + 5.1 JBL speakers
The PS3 is feeding linear PCM and the Denon says is receiving Multichannel input.
When playing games, DVD, BlueRay on the PS3 the system works great with the subwoofer activated. When playing music stored on the PS3 (WMA), the sub is silent!
This is annoying me as I want the sub active all the time. The Denon SW setup is LFE+Main.
Has anyone got any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance!
SirDrexl 02-18-09, 06:44 PM That's probably due to how the PS3 sends 2-channel music as a 5.1 or 7.1 signal, with the front L and R active and the other channels silent. People have been complaining about that for a long time now.
See if your receiver allows you to route the low bass (from the non-.1 channels) to the subwoofer. I bet you were only sending the LFE channel to the sub, and letting the other speakers handle the rest of the bass. You should have it set up so that the sub can get that bass AND the LFE channel anyway.
sega4ever 02-18-09, 08:45 PM I have a strange audio delay with my ps3.
My ps3 is hooked up with hdmi for video, and a toslink cable for audio to a kenwood vr-605
When I just move to a different icon on the xbm, I don't hear any sound. Its only after I move to a different icon and stay active as in keep moving in one direction for a second, then the audio will work fine. I also started the ps3, then moved to an icon and didn't hear anything as usual, then waited about 3 seconds, then moved again and still didn't hear anything.
I don't have this problem when playing a game or watching a movie.
Hi PS3 users
I am wondering/hoping someone in this forum can help me with a PS3 network problem.
I am using a Vista Home Premium computer and a wired network in my home, the PS3 is the original 80G model, it works well in all respects but I have been unable to have it locate a Media server to view and/or download pics from this computer or listen to music on the Vista machine. I also have used the same computer with TIVO on a wireless network (different location) with no problem. I have the PS3 settings/network switch enabled, I believe I covered the bases on Vista to allow sharing of the music/Picture various folders allowing access by others... but still when I search for media servers on the PS3.. it does not find the server..
If anyone out there can offer any suggestions it would be really appreciated. I spent a few hours tweaking and chaning settings with out success.
I am hoping there may be a network expert out there that can help
Thank you

What media server program are you running on your Vista computer? Is that media program *actually* running in an open window when you ask your PS3 to find media servers?
I am using the Windows Media player I believe ver. 11 that comes in Vista..
not sure what you mean when you say running in an open Window...
Do you mean the program has to be actually running.. I thought the PS3 would just look for any networked computer and then access the various folder(s) that I have shared(pictures or music) and then let me pick from what was in the folder..
So if that what is wrong... I will open Media player and then try to access it.
Thanks for your help... will comment back once i try this

Yes, it must be running for the PS3 to see it and utilize it. After you get this functioning and WMP and your PS3 find each other you can set WMP to run as a service where it will run in the background of your PC and not have to be in an active window (or active icon in your tool bar).
But that means WMP will start running every time your computer boots. Some would not like this function. ;)
I have zero problems connecting wirelessly with the PS3. When I try to connect with a wired connection (to limit streaming stutter) I cannot connect to the internet. I am able to obtain IP address but then get error 80710102 DNS error. I have manually set up the IP, default router, subnet, primary dns, but nothing works. I'm connecting through a powerline adapter. Any help would be appreciated.

The powerline adapters can be hit or miss. They are either a godsend and work great or are a major PITA! :)
If at all possible, can you temporarily get the PS3 close to you your router with a simple video hookup and try it wired direct to the router? If it does not connect as static then try DHCP.
I know this is probably not possible, but I'm trying to eliminate the powerline adapter as your connection problem. The fact that the PS3 connects fine via WiFi is an indicator that the powerline adapter may be the culprit.
Another (and simpler way) to test your powerline adapter is to try to get a wired connection to any other IP device like a laptop.
It is important to test the powerline adapter at the location where you intend to use it.
BTW: You are sure your static IP is not duplicated on your network anywhere?
Edward Schatz 02-23-09, 03:25 PM Got a small problem using my PS3. I have the machine sent through a Marantz HDMI switcher to a Marantz SR9600 receiver off to a Sony KDL-40XBR6 television. Sometimes, in the XMB, the screen cuts out and goes to a snow image (like you'd have on an old analogue TV) and then returns to the XMB. This ONLY happens in the XMB. I have watched many movies and played a game last night for several hours without an issue. Any idea as to the cause of this problem? Faulty cable? PS3 software problem? TV?

I just started having this 'problem' today. I purchased my PS3 in 11/08. It had been whisper quiet up until now. My HDD is making a little more noise during access now too. The disc drive doesnt make the noise during gameplay and thankfully not during movie play, only in the XMB screen. Odd and annoying, but I dont think (at least I hope it isnt) a scene of anything worse coming along.
This may have been answered numerous times, but can the PS3 be housed behind or on the side of a persons home movie screen, if one is using the PS3 in a home theater set-up? I'm thinking of housing my receiver, PS3, etc closer to my front projector (middle of the room, and directly beside main viewing area) and I was wondering if there are any disconnect or lag issues with the wireless PS3 controllers if the unit isn't directly in front while trying to play a game.

Seriously? Well, that will be one option. I will try out a side placement too.

So there is no way to do 5 or 7 channel stereo while listening to the media server over HDMI since receivers get the input as 5.1 or 7.1 channel PCM?
I dont have the lack of bass problem(in fact I have too much of it) but would like to be able to get 7 channel stereo on "stereo" sources without resorting to bitstreaming and losing the blu ray codecs.

I've never tried this as I have no need to do so, but doesn't the PS3 save different video and audio settings (user profile) depending on which "user" is currently logged onto the PS3?
*IF* this is true (and I really don't know if it is) then couldn't you make different "users" be different audio output settings?
User 1 = Blu-ray Profile = audio settings for HD audio output as MPCM via HDMI
User 2 = CD Profile = 2 ch PCM sent to AVR via HDMI = AVR can apply 7 ch stereo mode
I suppose, if this is doable at all, User 2 could even be Optical output for audio as well.
Or, is my vague understanding of PS3 user/profile completely off the mark? :D

Bluetooth (what the ps3 controllers use) does not require LoS (Line-of-Sight) to work like most IR remotes do. You can put the ps3 anywhere as long as it is in range, it will work fine.
Most other home theater items like AVR's, Video Processors, etc do use IR, so you'll have to get a RF->IR blaster to control them from different locations.

Was a good idea, but any changes I made to the settings under one profile, were also changed for the other. I could make a different background though! I was able to get the thing to spit out the 2ch PCM so the 354 would be able to 7 ch stereo it but I had to disable every 5.1 and 7.1 PCM format being output.

ascension 03-04-09, 04:04 PM I was wondering, while playing a blu-ray movie that has Dolby TrueHD, when you press the select button to bring up that "info" menu during the movie playback, on the upper right hand corner, is it supposed to say "Dolby Digital" or "Dolby TrueHD"? Why I'm asking is I don't think I'm getting Dolby TrueHD coming through my receiver using HDMI. I have a PS3 hooked to my HK247 via HDMI.
My display on the receiver says Multi-channel PCM, so I don't know if I'm getting it or not. I just bought the PS3 the other week and did the new software update that popped up. Any help would be appreciated!
Did you choose the DDTHD track in the movies menu?

If the display for the PS3 does not say TrueHD or DTS Master you are not getting HD sound. Go to the sound settings menu and make sure all the 5.1 options are selected (or 7.1 and 5.1 settings if your system is 7.1). It should do this automatically, but that doesn't always work.

I figured the PS3 could be set anywhere, but I just wanted to be sure. My set-up (receiver, Ps3 and components) will be directly in the middle of a long wall, which is on peoples left side when viewing the movie screen. I'll just aim to the left side for my theater set-up for now. I'm slowly piecing my theater/family room together.

I would recommend picking up a nice Logitech Universal remote that has RF capabilities. They usually come with IR blasters so you don't have to point the remote.

Make sure your AV Setup is PCM and not Bitstream. If set to Bitstream it will pull the DD track out of TrueHD and use that. Also make sure when playing the disk you go to Language or Setup menu option and select the TrueHD track.

I highly doubt the problem is WMP. There must be audio settings on the PS3 or your AVR that are not set correctly. Can you play a CD on your PS3? Have you tried putting an MP3 on your PS3 hard drive and see if it plays then?

It's normal. The PS3's chip doesn't support passing the bitstreams of the newer lossless codecs, but it can decode to PCM.

I do have one more question. I'm running the PS3 through my receiver (HK247) and out to my projector (Optoma HD70). My projector does my picture at a native 720p. I've noticed though that when I look at my screen, my projector will say 1080p when I'm playing my ps3. Do I need to go to the video option on my ps3 and set it to just 720p, or should I leave that alone?

Try both and see which looks better. May not be any difference at all, but worth a quick "compare". :)

Turn on multi channel PCM.

I also have a HK 247. One problem you may encounter running the PS3 at
720p is that the receiver can only pass 1080i or p cleanly. It won't pass 720p without processing. And from my own and other's experiences, it does not look good at all.

ianmcc06 03-16-09, 10:22 PM People, something terrible has happened! My PS3 has suddenly decided not to output vide through HDMI. Everything else works perfectly fine except for that. My typical set up is the unit, a cheap HDMI cable and a 2005-6 Sony Bravia LCD TV.
Here's the things I've already tried (and failed with) to remedy the problem:
1.) Used a brand new HDMI cable instead of cheap one
2.) Reset the video output to standard (with the 5-second touch procedure), changed to 480p an then manually returned to outputting thorugh HDMI
3.) Diagnosing the PS3 with an internal problem (I moved it to a newer Sony Bravia upstairs and it output through HDMI just fine)
4.) Air-dusting it to death.
There's gotta be something I'm missing here. If anyone can help throw out a reply quick!
splinters 03-16-09, 11:11 PM I would check to see if you have another HDMI player to test the Sony HDTV with. Sounds like the HDMI port on the tv may have issues.

ianmcc06 03-16-09, 11:28 PM Splinters, I tried using a brand new dedicated Sony BRD player and it failed to output video as well. All I got was a trippy looking pattern of dark grey squares across the screen. Is it a software compatibility issue with the Bravia and the PS3? It can't be a problem with the physical HDMI input, I've connected my DirectTV box to it and it works just fine. It seems to be localized to Sony products that play BRDs :P

I'd try a different HDMI input on the TV and double check all HDMI settings in the TV. Was the PS3 functioning via HDMI to this TV prior?
If the suggestions here don't resolve your issue you could take your PS3 to a friends TV and see how it functions. This could eliminate the PS3 as your problem.

To me it sounds like it is definitely the TV and perhaps the one input.
ianmcc06 03-17-09, 02:52 PM By now I'm certain it's a problem with the TV itself, it's simply not accepting the signal from the PS3 or dedicated Sony BRD player. Is there something I can modify by taking the TV apart to fix the issue or do I simply have to call Sony and hope I'm still under warranty?
ianmcc06 03-17-09, 02:53 PM And by "not accepting" I mean I can see grey distortion across the screen but no clear image.

I'd try asking this in a forum dedicated to your model TV. What is the set output resolution of the dish STB you said was working via HDMI? Maybe it's outputting 1080i and your BR players are outputting 1080p? Or a refresh rate conflict? TV settings?
Just grabbing at straws for ya.
TommyHolly 03-18-09, 12:24 AM I'm trying to figure out if my PS3 is good enough for DTS and TrueHD?
If I play a movie with DTS or TrueHD, it sends it to my brand new (2009) Onkyo TX-NR906 receiver as LPCM and the DTS or TrueHD light never lights up. So I need to call Onkyo in the morning and see if that means that my receiver won't be actually playing that in DTS and instead using some lesser or downgraded audio version to play the sound. Since PS3 does not have an option of bypassing the audio output directly to the Onkyo TX-NR906 and letting it decode everything, then I might get stuck buying a BlueRay player???
If I need a BD player, which one is best?

You are getting DTS-MA and TrueHD. PS3 decodes it and sends as LPCM. Bitstream simply means your AVR decodes it. It's all lossless HD audio.
You can buy a new BD player that will bitstream so you can see the pretty lights on your AVR, but you are getting HD lossless audio either way. :)
tcramer 03-18-09, 08:54 AM Well, the color issue that I have mentioned before is not between the ss2300 and the PS3, but rather those 2 items plus a Panasonic 85u series plasma. I used to experience the problem all the time, but now I have had a Pioneer for a week and have not once experienced color issue. It must be a jdmi handshake problem when those 3 components are all connected. Strange, but I'm glad I know exactly what it was.

The best settings really depend on what kind of home theater system/receiver you have and the type of HDTV you have. Fill us in on that and for starters just leave all the settings at auto and it will be fine.

Yes
Yes
Then probably use auto setup, confirm audio is set to bitstream and video is 1080p. If your TV handles Full RGB and BTB-WTW might want to verify those in settings as well.
There is probably some "set to factory default" setting (never needed it as I'm the original owner) to wipe out any/all previous settings on the unit.
Start with a clean slate. :)

If I am not mistaken, I believe the PS3 CANNOT bitstream the HD codecs. The only way to get HD sound with the PS3 is to lpcm it to the receiver. Go into the manual sound settings and make sure the 7.1 and 5.1 options are selected. For video I would use: 1080p, wtw, auto rgb/y..., limited rgb. I believe those work best with the Panny. :)

wtw = super white by the way

rogerjet 03-25-09, 07:26 AM Hi,
I have an new 80gig PS3 less than one week. I have it hooked up via hdmi to my Marantz sr6003 for audio and video with hdmi then to my hdtv.
Audio set to LPCM auto set in menu. All been working fantastic until today. I have no audio in menu ie no beeps while navigating, no audio with either fifa 09 or resistance 2. If I play a video from media server no problems with sound, insert a dvd no issues with sound playing 5.1.
Any help would be appreciated.
rogerjet 03-25-09, 11:19 PM Got an email back from Playstation support.
They siad to try 2 things system reset - No change.
Restore defaults fixed the issue.
Strange one!
For the last couple weeks, my ps3 start acting up. while playing games or watching blue-ray, I can barely hear the vocal/voice audio, very little, if any even if I turned up the volume to the max. However, I could hear all the action sound while playing game, but very little vocal/voice. BTW, I used optical output connecting directly to the Logitec Z5500.
any idea how to fix it?

If its connected by HDMI, I would check the HDMI CEC on the Sammy and make sure its turned off. This is a control function that lets one A/V component control another if they are connected via HDMI cables.

Hi guys. I'm having an issue while playing games on my PS3. I think it may be a HDCP handshake isssue that I need help on resolving.
So my setup is, PS3 through HDMI to an Onkyo 806 7.1 AV reciever. Then HDMI out from Onkyo to a Sony SXRD KDS-60A2000. From this I should recieve 1080p video along with the 7.1 LPCM audio from the PS3.
While playing a game, I sometimes lose video signal to my tv. It just goes black on me for anywhere between 3-10 seconds at a time. The signal comes back and I can continue playing. It will sometimes continue to happen a few minutes later again and again. When the screen blacks out, sometimes in the top left corner it will display "Video 6" or whatever input it is. I never lose sound over my surround sound.
After selecting a game or blu-ray from the menu to play, my screen goes black as the reciever picks up different kinds of audio for a second or two. Then clicks out a few more times during previews and the legal warning stuff. While the actual movie plays, there is no issues. I don't have any problems wth any other source other than while using the PS3.
I've tried to search forums on what could be causing this issue and I've come to think maybe it's a HDCP handshake issue with the tv because it's not accepting the signal properly from the repeater (the Onkyo). I want to keep the setup how it is because I believe it's the only way I can get 1080P to the tv and the LPCM sound.
Has anybody heard of this happening? And how can I resolve it without settling for lesser settings, or springing for a newer tv?
Sandwedg 04-16-09, 01:07 AM I've had my PS3 for a couple of years now, hooked up HDMI video, optical audio. I just got a new Denon 2309 receiver for the HDMI audio and everything seemed great.
I fired up RB2 tonight and I only get 2 channel audio. It shows multi-channel pcm through all the load screens and when the "2 cars going head on" intro video starts, it changes to display "stereo". I wasn't getting any sound until I unchecked the dolby digital setting in the audio settings menu in RB2.
I confirmed that HDMI audio is enabled in the sound settings and all the possible outputs are checked. I started and quit the game a few times, same results.
Any ideas? I was playing oblivion about 10 minutes before and everything was great.
Thanks in advance!
It may be reading "stereo" because that's the audio signal for that part. It should change automatically from stereo once it starts to recieve a different codec.

We played for about an hour and it never changed from "stereo". Very strange. First time in a year that we didn't have full surround while playing. As far as the receiver display icons go, it showed 2 channels in on the one side, and 2 channels out on the other. ?????
Lord_Zath 04-16-09, 10:05 AM I believe this is actually a standard issue with RB2. Check the official RB thread. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16275264

I would try hooking the PS3 directly to the TV to see if the problem still happens. This way you can at least confirm if it's the PS3 or the receiver having problems.

Thanks. I searched the RB thread just now and got a bunch of stuff relating to lag. I cannot believe that the whole point of getting an HDMI receiver was to be able to do something with the lossless audio available with the PS3 and BD, and then for the one game that is so very audio oriented, I'm supposed to reconfigure everything to use optical? that's flat out crap.

chadmak09 04-16-09, 02:41 PM .
I wanted to let everyone know about what I recently went thru when I sold my PS3 and got a new one.
I recently had my PS3 go bad and had to buy a new one.
I sold my old PS3 on ebay and formatted the hard drive before i did.
I figured that formatting the hard drive would clear my PS3 store account info from the PS3.
I was wrong.
I went to the PS3 store friday on my new PS3 and bought an HD movie to download. When I tried to download it, It would not allow it. It displayed the following message:
" Unable to download movie because your account is activated on another PS3 system".
The problem was that I did not go to the "Deactivate PS3" menu and deactivate my old PS3 before I sold it.
So I was unable to download movies on my new PS3 under my account.
I should have went here:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/chadmak09/002-7.jpg?t=1239905408
and then here:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/chadmak09/001-5.jpg?t=1239906854
and then here:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm71/chadmak09/006-9.jpg?t=1239906393
I ended up having to call Sony customer support, and then Fax them all my account information and a copy of the reciept for my new PS3 to prove that I owned it. Then they De-activated my account from my old PS3.
With PS3 store Game downloads you can download the games/patches on up to 5 PS3 systems.
But with movie downloads, Only one PS3 can be activated at a time.
So if anyone is going to sell/throw away thier broken/old PS3, and get a new one, You need to make absolutly sure You go into Account management, System activation, PS3 system, And De-activate the old PS3 Before selling it or trashing it.
Thanks,
Chadmak09

I didn't play any songs (I was using the controller, and I didn't feel like singing) but I made it all the way to the root menu and it was still showing "multi-channel PCM" on my denon display. Intro movie sounded good.
My problem is fairly minor, but it's been bugging me.
My PS3 is hooked into my receiver (a Denon 789) over HDMI. For some reason, the system seems to be outputting all games in 7.1 sound, regardless of whether they support 7.1. Music, video files, and DVDs output properly (reading as stereo or 5.1 Multi Channel In as appropriate). I have all options checked in the PS3's audio setup menu.
As far as I can tell this isn't causing any sound issues, but it's costing me the ability to adjust my ProLogicIIx settings with 5.1 games and to tell at a glance what kind of sound I'm getting from a game. Any ideas?

Any ideas? The only solution is to manually de-select the 7.1 audio output options in the XMB, forcing the PS3 to output 5.1 (which your receiver can then process properly into 7.1).
The last firmware update fixed this exact problem for music files and CD playback (afaik DVD/BD never needed this fix), but game audio still has this old problem. Who knows when/if a fix will come? In the meantime, you'll have to do this workaround. :o
Hmm, weird. I'd heard about the music bug, but not the games one, which seems like it would be the much more serious issue.

My first thought is that the PS3 is trying to send audio to your TV via the HDMI connection. Make sure you have video set to HDMI and audio set to optical in your XMB.
What audio output options do you have checked off in your PS3? If you're using optical, you should be able to choose all of the 2-channel PCM options, as well. I also have a feeling that when you first turned on the PS3, it saw the HDMI connection to your TV and determined the audio selections from that rather than from your optical connection to your AVR.
Also, check your listening modes/DSPs on your AVR. It may be trying to do something funky/impossible with certain audio signals.
Double-check the audio settings under DVD/Bluray in your PS3's XMB. As others said, make sure it's set to bitstream.
***And most importantly double-check that you have your audio output selected for optical rather than HDMI in the sound settings menu!!
JimWinVA 05-09-09, 06:42 PM Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate the effort. I am a new PS3 owner, but far from a newbie in electronics. I have checked everything I can think of and this just doesn't make sense.
I get no audio when choosing optical and bitstream. When I change to linear PCM, it works like it should- I get stereo PCM to my AVR, which then uses DPL IIx to give me surround. At least I have that now. But nothing from optical on bitstream. Could there be a DD decoder problem in the PS3? Is there a possible issue w/ the HDMI getting the DD signal so its not available to the optical??? I've looked for a way to disable HDMI audio but have found none. I'm stumped- any ideas?
Thanks in advance and for help offered so far.
